MEMBER OF THE YEAR

2016-2017 6

By: Anna Tran, Secretary

This year I was able to attend our annual Key Club Ceremony, and I was more than glad to host it along with my amazing officers. This year, we decided to change things up and make it at a restaurant. It was hard finding a place that fitted our needs and also our budget, but in the end, we found one. Olive Garden was the only place that could hold our many guests and fit within our budget. The banquet was so much fun and we made many connections with other clubs, and also with our LTG. We were fortunate enough to have our LTG, Ethan Arredondo and International Trustee Tiffany Hang attend our banquet, and made it one of the memories for the books. Our LTG is really kind and involved with our club, he has dedicated himself to trying to attend as many club meetings as he can from each school, and we are excited to see him more in the future.

We started off the banquet at 6:00 P.M. waiting for guests to arrive and settle down. In the beginning, we didn’t expect this many guests to come, but the more that came, the merrier. After the guests got their meals and begin to eat, the officers then started with the awards for the outstanding members and our amazing former officers. Our former officers taught us to have great communication and overall to have a good time. Our president and other officers purchased many gifts to say thank you and I couldn’t be more grateful for them. I’m most thankful to our former President, Quynh Dinh. She is my role model and the one who taught me the most important things in life. I’m so grateful to have her in my life and as our former Key Club president. I had such a great experience and this year’s banquet was by far the best one yet. Our board officers spent a great deal of time and energy into creating a memorable banquet, and that was exactly what it was. A memorable night.

And We Do It “Back to Back By: Alice Nguyen, President The time has come for the new officers to plan our annual Key Club celebratory night and attend the Pinning Ceremony. Despite it being the second time to plan a banquet and attend the officer installation ceremony, I cannot believe how stressed I felt. But nevertheless, the new officers of Mansfield Summit High School Key Club managed to host a successful annual banquet and had fun at the Pinning Ceremony.

On May 22nd, the officers decided to stray away from tradition and hosted the celebratory ceremony at a local Olive Garden. Prior to the event, I felt like I was on a timecrunch. My officers and I held an elaborate board meeting afterschool to rehearse what we would say for the night and made a schedule to decrease any confusion. We finalized everything - the food, reservations, and the raffle event for the guests all within less than two hours! When the clock has struck 6:00 PM, I felt like I was running everywhere back and forth. I wanted everyone to feel comfortable in the environment and enjoy their time during the banquet. From getting napkins and straws for our guests to checking up on them, I wanted to provide the best to everyone and make an unforgettable night for the officers. When the night ended, my heart was filled with an emotional feeling.

I realized that the presidency role is truly mine for the year and the former senior officers are now moving on to the next chapter of their life. Although it was quite saddening to finally see my senior officers to leave, I also felt accomplished for successfully completing my first major task as president – hosting an “end-ofthe-year ceremony! Many pictures were taken, laughter could be heard in every corner of the room, smiles were on every single face, and it was probably one of the best day of my presidency term by far. On the next day, it was the annual Pinning Ceremony hosted by the lieutenant governors of Division 39 South and North. Although every officer was ex-

tremely exhausted from the day before, we were looking forward to the pinning and installation of new officers. Held at the Mansfield City Hall, the event felt formal. Somehow, all worries and stress was left at the door. Instead, I was focused on the words given by the lieutenant governors about my role which gave me a sense of pride and determination for greater things within my club. Despite having two very important events back-toback, I had a lot of fun being a part of it. Within two days, I laughed, smiled, and most importantly, I built a stronger connection and bonded with my team. As I carry out my term for the year, I will be looking back to these days as a source of motivation and portray the best of me.

A Pie for a Pie

By: Arantza Zamudio,Webmaster

It is traditional to end any season of an event on a high note, and Summit High School’s Key Club is no different. To conclude an amazing school year and Key Club school season, our officers decided to host one last meeting: a celebratory meeting open to all students and faculty, even non-Key Clubbers, with food and games. Our officers and members donated food to contribute chips, snacks, and drinks alongside four boxes of pizza. The opening icebreakers hosted were a Kahoot quiz on Disney facts & characters (which became more competitive and entertaining as it progressed), and two rounds of Matchmaker. Right after the icebreakers, our meeting was hosted--brief as it was--which introduced the 2017-2018 officers and promoted several volunteering opportunities for the summer. After the meeting was concluded, it was time for the highlight of the event--a pie in the face of any officer, advisor, or member of a paying member’s choice. Overall, most of the people present will agree, there was both joy and misfortune in the procession. Plenty of elation was in the atmosphere during the whole celebration. We had the honor of hosting the event with the presence of several district officers, Kiwanis representatives, and visitors of other Mansfield ISD Key Club officers. They seemed very pleased with the activities we had planned, and even helped distribute food and participated in the games. The first game, the Disney quiz, pepped up everyone’s competitive attitude; outcries of both joy and an-

throughout the room as each participant either answered a question right or wrong. Matchmaker was also interesting, as the “match finder” stood facing away from the crowd and announcing the desired qualities in a partner, and the crowd would sit or remain standing based on their compatibility, with the last person standing being named the “match”. When the President had concluded the meeting, the officers proceeded to pass out plates for each member to receive a slice of pizza. To pay for the pizza, several officers contributed $5 to pay for them, as we wanted little to no money to be used from the club’s account. They also had the choice of going to the front table for snacks and drinks provided by all members, as well as two boxes of doughnuts that disappeared in the blink of an eye. Afterwards a few officers helped to spoon the Cool Whip onto plates for the pie game. The tubs were also paid by the officers, so again, no Key Club money was used; in fact, they were used as a fundraiser. With exception of the district officers who received a free pieing opportunity, guests were asked to pay $1 for the chance to pie their friends and frenemies in the face. Popular targets were our advisors, our President, and each other--even the district officers volunteered to get pied. As the saying goes, though, it’s all fun and games until someone gets hurt. Towards the end of the laughter, one member decided to surprise their friend with a sudden pie in the face. Unfortunately, this unexpecting friend’s phone flew out of her hand and hit the concrete sidewalk, shattering it upon impact. During this time, another member was hurt in a pieing accident, as her foot was cut deeply by her left toe. It is clear that stricter guidelines will need to be enforced next year. Overall, the open invite concluding meeting/celebration was an overwhelming success. Though there were a few mishaps along the way, the vast majority of the attendees enjoyed the games and the food, and we will most certainly host an event like this one next year. Hopefully next year, we’ll keep the eye for an eye down to only a pie for a pie.
