Mansfield Summit Key Club members, First of all, I want to thank our supporters – the teachers and administrative staffs at Mansfield Summit High School, our faculty advisors Mr. Reese and Mrs. Berwise, local Mansfield Kiwanis Club and Kiwanian Mr. Stover. Without you guys, we wouldn’t be where we are today. You helped us shape the club to be an amazing representation of Mansfield Summit High School. We are the physical embodiment of what passion and motivation looks like and we couldn’t have done it without your advice, encouragement, and of course, love and support. I am also very appreciative and grateful to have amazing members like you guys. Whenever I volunteer, my heart gets so full and happy seeing you there. A club is not a club without its members. This month was very busy with Key Club Week and the many holiday-seasoned service events, so thank you so much for participating and reminding me why I enjoy being a part of this organization, especially why I decided to become your president. Let’s keep up this momentum of service for the next upcoming holiday season and through on out! The officers and I got some exciting news and events planned out so we hope you’re ready!
Yours in Service,
Alice Nguyen SHS Key Club President

Thanksgiving Anna, Tran, Secretary
Throughout my Key Club experience, I have gone to many volunteering opportunities but by far, my favorite time and place to go volunteering is at Mission Arlington during Thanksgiving. With it being only ten minutes away, it was a breeze getting there. Me and my family drove down there Thursday bright and early in the morning. I invited a few friends to join which made it even more enjoyable. The day had just begun and the fun had just barely started. In the beginning, we started by taping the encouraging note on the Styrofoam to-go box and then proceeded by packing the food into the boxes. We put in Turkey, mashed potatoes, green beans, and stuffing. There were rows of tables and we all stood side-by-side like an assembly line and packaged the food. At Mission Arlington, there would be specific rooms for each part of the meal. For example, one room would be dedicated to the dinner portion of the meal and another would be dessert.
8
In the “Dinner Room, there was about 100 volunteers that lined up in rows at different tables. At the beginning of the
table, one person would open the boxes and give it to the next person to put in 3 pieces of Turkey. After placing the Turkey, it would then be passed down to the next to put in green beans, corn, or mashed potatoes, depending on what was available. Many of the foods being packaged was made by the kind people at Mission Arlington, donated by stores, or brought in by generous civilians. Next year, my family and I would like to make food to donate and make it a family tradition. After all the food was placed inside the box, 2 people would close it and bring it to another table to be placed in plastic bags.
This was only a small portion in the making of the meals. After all the food is packaged and done, it would all be brought outside to be passed out all over Arlington. It takes about 6,000 volunteers to deliver the food. Given to them would be the meal, a bottle of water, and a heartwarming “Happy Thanksgiving from the deliverers. This was such a special experience for me and it definitely encouraged me to volunteer. I was able to get closer with my community and have fun while doing it too. At the end of the day, I learned that over 25,000+ meals were given and that was the best part about volunteering. Knowing that I made an impact on my community.

Alice Nguyen, President How do you imagine the perfect 2018 DCON now that the theme is released? What are some ideas you have for the Convention Liaison to consider? On the fourth of November, the district board officers of TexasOklahoma announced this year’s district convention theme to be superheroes! Not only am I curious to see how the event is decorated, but it also makes me very anxious and excited knowing that April is approaching us just around the corner. I am very happy and blessed to be able to go again this year and experience an exciting adventure with many of the other Key Clubbers within the district of TexasOklahoma. I have been actively involved with Key Club since my freshman year of high school, so to see the growth and expansion of Key Club amongst thousands of students like me is an amazing experience to witness My first time attending the annual district convention was last year with the theme as “The Wizarding World of Service” where everything was wizard-based and definitely magical. This year, with the theme relating to superheroes, I am hoping to see many of the district officers dressed up as different protagonist characters or possibly villains! Many of the district officers seem like pun-loving people so I’m expecting many of the forums and activities having “punny” names. With a
12
predicament that there would be at least a 10% increase of the number of members that would go to DCON this year, I am very excited to bring my current and upcoming officers and spend a few days with them to bond and learn more about Key Club. Last year, during the big ceremony of awards and announcements, many schools were congratulated for their hard work on t-shirt designs, posters, and so much more. To me, I was disappointed when the audience couldn’t see the winners’ products. I feel like if tshirts and advertising posters were shown, it can possibly provide Key Clubbers a sense of creativity. Another thing that the convention liaison can make sure to improve this year is the timings of events. I remember that in a lot of contests, contestants had their time or location changed, some of which had no knowledge of. It would be nice if events were set in stone when club register for the event. This would definitely create less disorder for the people that runs the convention and the Key Clubbers. Although there are changes I would like to see and improve, I am aware that the convention liaison is just one individual who can do so much and things happen. With that being said, regardless of how the convention is ran this year, as long as it’s welcoming and hyped up, many Key Clubbers like myself will be excited.
13
DCON is the Texas-Oklahoma District's annual district convention, where Key Clubbers from across both states gather to promote community service, learn about their leadership abilities, and to meet and greet peers who share the same passion to serve their community. Teens dress in their best attire each day, and may participate in a variety of activities, including games and voting for officers. The most anticipated event, however, is the ceremony where the top clubs are recognized for their astounding achievements. These achievements are accomplished through your participation, through your dedication to service, to the success of our organization, and to change the world. In addition, DCON has an annual theme, and this year's theme is, drum-roll please... We are ultra excited to see how we can be superheroes to make the world a better place. Let's help get Mansfield Summit High School Key Club in the Top 10!
