Mansfield Summit Key Club members, There are many supporters and Key Club members this year at Mansfield Summit and I feel extremely proud. There has been a great turnout at all our club meetings in the morning and afternoon and it’s all thanks to you for spreading the word around! The fall and winter season is upon us and your Key Club officers are so excited to be participating in elementary school fairs, club projects, and seasonal socials. With that being said, make sure you’re connected with us and follow us through Remind 101, Instagram and Twitter to get every single detail. On another note, the Key Club officers and I are praying for all of those that are affected by the many natural disasters. Please keep them In your prayers as well! Yours in Service,

Alice Nguyen SHS Key Club President

Meet Your Newest Officer

Hello Key Club! My name is Alyssa Brown, and I'm your newly elected freshman class representative. Right now I play tennis and flute in the marching band. I'm a super big band geek, and all I listen to is classical music. Although I may have a tight schedule, I still make time to help people in need. As Virginia Williams once said “we have a responsibility to help those around us and help others in need. So thank you for joining Key Club, and I'm looking forward to being apart of this amazing club this year!

Inter-webs

Alice Nguyen, President

How does your club utilize social media to increase membership and communication? Increasing club membership count and maintaining communication between members throughout the year is a difficult thing to do. Luckily, with the use of technology, social media comes in handy when we want to convey a message to the public. From making small conversations and making friendships to promoting and advertising our Key Club’s events, social media allows the officers to connect to several people outside and inside the organization.

When the public make social media accounts such as Instagram, Twitter, or Facebook, it is generally used as a source of communication and connecting with others. With Key Club, there is no exception! Living in a modern time where e-mails are rarely used, many – if not all – students rely heavily on social media to obtain information. It allows for both the senders and receivers to receive notifications and messages quickly. At Mansfield Summit High School, the Key Club officers utilize three primary apps: Remind101, Instagram, and Twitter. With any of these three mobile apps, not only do members and non-members are knowledgeable about upcoming meetings or events, but they can also directly communicate with the officers whenever they desire. There have been several times when people from within and outside of Key Club has personally contacted us through the app. Regardless of where or whom the individual may be, the officers are always glad to have worthwhile conversations with them. Thanks to social media, both the officers and the person at the other end of the line can connect which leads to a start of a friendship. Another benefit of having social medias for the club is that the officers can easily promote our events and meetings. Without the help of the Internet, our club would not have as much success with our fundraisers and socials. For example, during the summer, the Key Club

10

officers had contributed their times and efforts in a fundraiser called the “Alex’s Lemonade Stand Foundation” or ALSF. We promoted like crazy on our media outlets because it was the easiest way to reach out to the public. With the help of all the likes and retweets, we raised a total of $1,025.24 from physical and online donations to fund for research on childhood cancer! As annoying people may think when an organization frequently posts, it is the fastest and easiest way to promote the club and spread the words. At this point in time, social media is important to a Key Club’s growth because it is widely used by almost everyone! There’s many benefits that can be taken advantage of when utilizing social media. With easy accessibility and fast connections, a Key Club can expand in membership size and build stronger communication within no time!

Brianna Dao, Vice President Across the nation today, throughout all of the Key Club’s that exist within not only Texas-Oklahoma, but across the country, we take advantage. We take advantage of even the simplest things such as water. As crazy as it may seem living twenty-first century, you would have assumed that across the globe, great poverty and the access of clean drinking water would have been eliminated by now. This is where you are wrong; 663 million people on our planet do not have access to safe, clean drinking water. On Wednesday, September 20th, 2017 a presentation about the Thirst Project was given to our Summit Key Clubbers. The Thirst Project is an organization that solely focuses on spreading awareness to younger generations to END the global water crisis. By educating young students like you and me about the water crisis, we are more aware of all the things we take for granted, water being one of them. In order to survive, we need water. Drinking unsafe, dirty water leads to multiple types of waterborne diseases that can kill more children than AIDS, Malaria, and all world violence combined within a single year. By spreading awareness about the water crisis that still exists, not only would it encourage multiple people to stand up and make a difference, but also people half way across the world would benefit from your actions. In 2012 the Thirst Project had one goal, providing the entire nation of Swaziland with clean drinking water by 2022. Swaziland is the second smallest country in Africa with the most highly dense HIV/AIDS population in the world. Being the most high – density populated, this was one of the major reasons as to why Swaziland was their first tackle. Now as of 2017, the Thirst Project has been able to fund over 13 countries with access to clean drinking water, for life. Stated by the Thirst Project guest speaker, Brandon Howe, “With your help and contributions, we can make the biggest difference to the most amount of people” This quote ultimately made a drastic impact on my life because as a key clubber, my ultimate goal is to give back to others and to impact on someone else’s life. With Thirst Project, we can have a decrease of death rates just by providing twenty-five dollars to provide someone else across the world with safe drinking water for life.

12

As I said before, we take the smallest necessities needed in order to survive for granted. If we’re thirsty, we can simply walk to the fridge within the comfort of our own home; however, half way across globe, someone is walking almost four miles just to collect water. Why sit here and watch someone else suffer from not having a simple necessity when we can get up and make a difference with Thirst Project.

A part of Key Club is getting to know your community and your peers however, before we get to know anyone else, we first must get to know each other. One way us officers accomplished this is by setting up a photo shoot. The experience ended up being an amazing bonding moment for all of us. We decided to take a trip down memory lane when we chose the setting of our pictures to take place at Mansfield City Hall - the same location we had our pinning ceremony! The experience brought a great wave of nostalgia for a lot of us because back then, most of us were nervous about entering unfamiliar territory and taking on a great responsibility. Now, it is safe to say that we have become more comfortable and close with each other. Our responsibilities are what make our job so exciting and allows us to make Key Club a joy for others to be a part of. This photoshoot was a great opportunity for all of us to look back and reflect on when we first became Key Club officers - what it meant for us then, why we chose to take this responsibility, and how that has changed now. Of course, this photoshoot was not so nostalgic for all of us, but only because we have a new freshman officer. Although our new officer never attended the pinning ceremony, this photoshoot allowed her and all of us - to get know everyone better and understand why all of

14

us chose to become a part of the Key Club community. This photoshoot also allowed for us officers to help our new freshman feel at home and learn more about the Key Club community. Hopefully one day our new freshman officer can reflect on this moment as we did and understand why they took this position with all its responsibilities and how they can learn from it. It is no doubt that the job as a Key Club officer is a great responsibility, but when we have each other to learn from, it becomes a privilege for all of us to be a part of such a welcoming community. Finally, even though this photoshoot was not so much a community service, it was still an opportunity for each of us to create relationships with whoever we may not be familiar with. After all, how else could we develop a strong bond with our community and members without knowing each other well enough first?
