LTG'S GREETING

Hey Pandas!

Ma ra Y ella

It's your LTG here again, except this time it's my last greeting to all of you. Sadly, my term is ending in less than a month, but I am confident I am leaving you all in the capable hands of my successor. Before I go, I'd just like to thank each and every single one of you for your amazing service this year. You're the reason why Division 11 is known across the district. I seriously love all of you, and I'll miss you once I go. Don't worry, I'll be back to visit, though! So Pandas, let's end this service year with a bang! Keep volunteering and fundraising, and I'll see you all at the March Divisional and some of you at LTC! Yours in service, Mara Yella

Comfort Cases helps children in the foster care system who struggle with having few belongings. These children would otherwise have to carry their things in a trash bag, so this organization provides them dignity and comfort with a good bag to call their own.

February Divisional

Our February Divisional was held on February 12th at Hunter College High School. Even though it was snowing, raining, and pretty much everything in between, we had a great showing, so thank you to everyone who attended! We went over some past news and future business, and HSMSE Key Club (pictured above) sold some Lunar New Year themed decorations and toys. I hope to see you all at our March Divisional! It's on March 8th at Katten Muchin Rosenman Law Firm, from 5:30 - 7PM. It's our last divisional of the service year, and the divisional board will have a fun surprise for you, so make sure to sign up on the form on Facebook or in my email updates!

FIRECRACKER FESTIVAL

FEBRUARY 5TH - Lunar New Year Celebration

On this day off from school, I was excited to partake in an inter-club event that helped support the thriving presence of Chinese culture in New York City. I tried to meet up with other people that were also volunteering beforehand, but all three of us were running late to the festival! Still, only about a dozen people were at the park when I first arrived, but more people started showing up right after. We started by removing all the necessary materials from a large truck, which included chairs, tables and folded-up tents, then we set up around the entrance. The festival started at ten, so we had time to walk around, explore the different company tents & and buy some "Party Poppers" and throw them at each other. The fair itself was very entertaining; there were a number of things to do from getting things from the tents (I got two free movie tickets!) to watching the explosion of fireworks on the center-stage. After a few more hours and a lunch break, the fair started winding down. During such time, we all pitched in the best we could to clean up what seemed like tons of confetti and garbage scattered all across the playground. While that was tedious, the full event was filled with interesting elements of Chinese culture, like music and calligraphy, that I hadn't been exposed to beforehand. For this, I thank the Better Chinatown Organization for their amazing festival and look forward to working with them in the years to come. - Jack Lehman, HSMSE, '21

Better Chinatown Parade 2/17 A celebration of Lunar New Year and Chinese culture.

“The parade was very nice and although it was freezing, I had so much fun! It was such a nice way to celebrate my culture and I had a lot of fun with my friends. It was great to see the parade from a firsthand perspective because normally i watch the parade, but this time I got to walk the parade and hand out stuff! Yanxiu, Baruch Key

DANCE NYC 2/22-24 Dance NYC is an organization which promotes dance artists and also inclusivity.

Bronx Science Key Club

At Dance NYC all the volunteers had fun working together to help set up and run the event which took place at Hunter College. Before the event, we were assigned tasks to fill tote bags for the guests and help with the guest list. Along with that, we also moved boxes around throughout the building which was great since we got to tour it at the same time! The staff was amazing and we were all provided with lots of pizza at the end of the day! The second day, around 300 people came for the event so we made sure to assist them and help them check in the event. After our shift was over, we were all welcome to participate in the event for ourselves! When I attended the event after my shift I met lots of wonderful people and even an alumni from Bronx Science who graduated in 1980! We had a great conversation about the event and our school. All in all this was a great event where everyone got along together and I’d definitely come back next year!

CENTRAL PARK HALF MARATHON

FEBRUARY 24, 2019

On Sunday, February 24th, several brave Key Club members traversed through Central Park trails and paths, trying to find 102nd St Crossing at 6 in the morning. We were helping the Central Park half marathon, an annual race which goes through the northern section of Central Park. I was initially tasked with creating and stacking cups of gatorade for runners, before helping Race Headquarters tents with registration. Then I returned to my previous position and continued to help out with water and gatorade cups. At around 10, it stopped raining, and the event became a lot more enjoyable. At around 11, the fastest runners were finishing, and they rewarded themselves with our beverages and bagels. For the next few hours, I continued to pass out food and drink and conversed with the worn out runners. This event was a lot more fun than past races because we were situated at both the start and the finish of the race, and we could talk to the runners before and after the race. Despite the terrible weather, I definitely enjoyed this event and the friendships I formed with fellow Key Club members along the way! - Max Koster, Stuy KC

CLIMB TO THE TOP NYC - 3/3

Climb to the Top is an event which raises money to support the fight against multiple sclerosis all the while challenging runners to scale Rockefeller Center.

We got there really early before the sun rose to cheer on the climbers. We were positioned around the corner of the finish line as a surprise spirit cheering squad. It was a reslly fun event and I almost lost my voice from all the screaming. I gave high fives to the climbers but got rejected a bunch of times. It's okay bc I quickly changed the rejected high five into jazz hands. Along with cheering people on, we got to meet key clubbers from Circle K and Stuy kc! During quiet times/the beginning, we played quackdittyoso with them and they taught us tricks with FLOW. I remember the first climber who arrived in less than 10 min and then started cheering. This event really showed me how humans can achieve extraordinary feats with a determined mindset such as climbing 69 flights of stairs - Yi Lan Zhang, Bronx Science
