Lieutenant Governor's Greeting

Hello Pandas! HAPPY MID-SUMMER! Are you having fun and relaxing? Summer is about halfway over, and despite that fact (and the Common App opening yesterday), I hope your summers have been going well! I'm sure you all did a lot this past month, so make sure you don't forget about Key Club! After coming back form ICON, I have been re-energized, and I'm so excited to share my experience with you all! To the club officers, you do need to fill out paperwork over the summer! This includes your ERFs, MRFs, and FRFs. Check out the paperwork chart at the end of the newsletter to stay updated! Also, please fill out your FRFs within two weeks of your fundraiser! As always, if you ever need me, just message me! I am pretty good at responding quickly through any means. I'll see you all at the August Divisional! Yours in service, Mara Yella

Bastille Day 7. 14. 18

I unfortunately only found out about the volunteer check in time being an hour earlier than our assignment time the night before the event, which caused a slight panic the night before. Nevertheless, I was able to wake up early on Sunday, June 15th to head to the FIAF or French Institute building for the second year in a row. After really enjoying myself at the FIAF educational/kids booth at the 2017 Bastille Day celebration, I was determined to help out again this year. After checking in (in which the FIAF employee who was checking us in recognized me from last year!) and getting my green wristband (which I put on way too tightly) and T-shirt that deceptively said “Parlez moi français” on the back (as the only French I can say is Je M'appelle, Enchanté, and the numbers 1 to 5), I sat in the lobby reading the The Tortoise and the Hare in Spanish while wishing I could read French until my coordinator, Claire, arrived. Once she arrived, she walked with me to the restaurant, Amali, where the Press and Sponsors VIP lounge was to be held. I helped move around the tables in the main floor until another volunteer (and our lovely project captain!) Sidney arrived. We once again had to wait as the manager of the restaurant, Sarah, hadn’t arrived yet, and we needed her permission to further arrange the restaurant. While waiting, some employees of Président Cheese as well as a bread company came into the restaurant to start setting up their respective products. Once Sarah finally arrived, along with 4 more Stuy Key Clubbers, we all went upstairs to start moving boxes of sparkling water, Perrier, and lemonade. We then spent the next hour rearranging all the little tables and chairs scattered around the floor in order to look the most presentable as possible. We tried our best to help set up French cookies as well in neat rows to maximize appeal, and were then left to our own devices until further notice. However, once the employees from Harmless Harvest coconut water arrived, we went back to work filling up tubs of free coconut water and the banner for the company.

Only after this were we finally given a lunch break. Unfortunately, our lunch break got cut short after Claire told us no minors could be allowed in the building due to the fact there was going to be alcohol being served and such. Thus, we left, and simply walked around the festival a bit until we met up with more Key Clubbers. We talked about our different jobs and asked each other about our experiences so far until another FIAF employee informed us that they had too many volunteers and no longer needed our help, encouraging us to go home. So, after getting our individual bags and talking a group photo, we hung around for a few extra minutes, playing around with the public spray paint art wall, then decided to leave. Leaving the festival was an entire ordeal on its own, however, because the moment we decided to leave and took to the streets, France won the World Cup! The streets suddenly became flooded with excited soccer (football) fans jumping and screaming, shouting and singing “C’est la vie” at the top of their lungs! This obviously made leaving the festival more difficult, but I felt so excited and jubilant feeling the energy of the crowd. I’m not usually one to follow sports or care about who wins in competitions, but seeing how proud everyone was, wearing their French flags across their backs, sitting on each others shoulders and shouting at the sky, seeing people’s faces smeared with the colors of the French flag, the familiar blue, white, and red pervasive throughout the massive crowd, I couldn’t help but feel proud, too. I saw so many interesting expressions of pride, too. One fan had a white cowboy hat that was painted blue and red on either flag ot mimic the French flag! After all of us finally made it to the train station, single-file like we were Kindergarteners on a field trip, we finally said our goodbyes and I, of course, got on the wrong train home. All is well, however, I made it home, and I can’t wait to sign up to volunteer at Bastille Day again next year! -Sammi Lin Stuyvesant Key Club

Bronx Science's Water Wars 6.30.18

This year was the 6th annual Bronx Science Key Club’s Water Wars, and I would say that it was a very memorable part of my summer. In the weeks leading up to the fundraiser I was nervous of the outcome but the nervousness turned into excitement the morning of the fundraiser. One of my most memorable moments would be preparing for water wars like filling up all the water balloons, making food, and planning together. It was a really fun process and I couldn’t be happier to be a part of it! It was a really sunny and nice day and we had many activities such as the three legged race, tug of wars, and of course, the water war. It was really nice to see everyone having fun after school ended and enjoying the summer weather. During the picnic everyone ate food and hung out with friends. My favorite part during the fundraiser was the auctioning because it was cool to see people so eager to throw balloons at people! Even though I got really wet during the auctions, I’m glad we made more money thanks to the participants. I’m glad everyone had fun and I can’t wait for the next Water Wars! - Cara Leung Bronx Science

Epic Ride 7.21.18

Epic Ride was on July 21. HSMSE was assigned to work at the first rest stop, which was in Owl’s Head Park, in Bay Ridge. I showed up at 7 and I helped set up the entrance signs. When the bikers started coming in, I was cheering them on with other volunteers. We were holding up signs and I even got to yell into a bullhorn! It was so much fun encouraging all the bikers and seeing the smiles on their face as they were reaching the rest stop. Looking back, I’m really glad I went to this event since I got to see other people from Stuy and Francis Lewis. It was nice meeting other Key Clubbers that I’ve never really talked to before and getting to know them. - Angelo Lontok HSMSE

FABSCRAP 7.16.18

FABScrap was a new and exciting event for us. We volunteered for a non-profit upcycling organization, sorting out fabrics and colors for later donation. The organization gave us a tour of their loft-space, filled to the brim with garbage bags ready to be delivered to recycling centers. Their message is really unique too: they take fabrics, thrown away by top-designer brands, and donate them to be recycled into multi-use materials. The event was so much fun, going through trash bags and working together in order to sort out all of the different materials. This was the first time I’ve been to the headquarters of a non-profit for an event. It was fascinating to see the beginnings of a company based in a small space in New York. Experiences like these make me really grateful for living in one of the busiest cities in the world. - Megan Ngo Bronx Science

ICON 2018 A couple of weeks ago, Key Clubbers from all over the world gathered in Chicago for our annual International Convention, commonly known as ICON, and for the first time in my 3 years in Key Club, I was one of those Key Clubbers as well. I had heard from some of my friends that it would be fun, but it always seemed like an trip I would never attend. However, as the new LTG for our division, I finally found my reason to go! So, I signed up, met with the others who were attending, and together we landed in Chicago, began our week of non-stop activities, and came out of it smiling and having enjoyed every single second of it. At the beginning of the trip, I was a little nervous about meeting other Key Clubbers. I wasn’t sure what they’d be like. However, since we were one of the first districts to arrive at the hotel, we got to see as each district slowly began to arrive for the conference. I was pleased to find that everyone was super nice, and I even made friends that I still talk to now. Since we didn’t eat in organized sessions, we were able to go out into Chicago and eat and bond with the new people we met. Even though most of the week was jam packed with Key Club things, we were still able to do a little sightseeing around the city. We went to the Field Museum, Navy Pier, an escape room, and even the famous Bean! At every location we took a ton of pictures, thanks to our resident photographers, Anthony and Thomas! While all those places were amazing, I think the most memorable was when we went on our 4th of July cruise in Lake Michigan. The night began really nicely, but once we were on the water and it began to get dark, we started to see lighting. Not a very good sign when you’re on the top deck of a boat! Soon it began to storm, and, to stay out of the rain, most of us huddled along the edge of the boat, which was slightly covered by the top deck, but still not completely dry. Let’s just say we all got super soaked, but had fun nonetheless!

Once the actual conference began, I was absolutely amazed. The first day was spirit wars, in which every district got to show off their spirit. Many brought costumes, fun shirts, hats, and the Capital district even gave out stickers. While New York did not have the most spirit at the conference, I certainly enjoyed seeing everyone else, learning their mascots, and most of all, trading pins! In the weeks leading up to ICON, I had heard about this tradition of trading pins at ICON. I never really thought much of it, but when we arrived and I saw it in action, I totally understood why everyone loves it. While trading, I was able to meet so many more people. All you had to do was go up to someone, and introduce yourself and go, “Hey! Want to trade pins?!” and most people responded with a yes and a smile. I even ended up walking around with some people from the Wisconsin-Upper Michigan District and KentuckyTennessee District! Looking back, I had so much fun, and I can’t believe it all happened in just one week! There were some similarities to LTC, like sessions, keynotes, and awards, but there was so much more. I would definitely recommend that any Key Clubber should go to ICON, if only just to look at your Snap Maps and see the entire country covered with Bitmojis :) But, besides that, it was really rewarding to see Key Club International in action. Since I was the only member from my club to attend, I was able to vote and sit at the House of Delegates, where we voted on changes to the Key Club Bylaws. Let me just say that I never thought there could be so much debate happening over one amendment!

Later on, we all joined together and watched as the new International Board was announced. I cannot put into words the tension and anticipation everyone in the New York District felt when they were announcing International Trustees. After all, we had a candidate in the running. Once his name was called, we all jumped up and screamed since we were all so happy for Braeden Dorchester, newly elected International Trustee from New York! I am so excited to see what he does and will always be cheering him on! After this long article, I’ll just end this with a congrats to the new International Board, especially our new president, Emily Rice, and with a promise that I will definitely go to another ICON in the future! - Mara Yella HSMSE
