WHAT’S ON RAFFLES COMING TO MARBELLA BARDOU LAUNCHES Exclusive Chelsea members-only nightclub Raffles is launching in Marbella this summer. The Kings Road based venue, made famous by enlisting top celebrities, royals and politicians, is heading for warmer shores this summer season and has found a much sought after prime spot in the heart of Puerto Banús to open Raffles Marbella, its first overseas venture since launch 45 years ago. Design plans for the venue near the El Corte Ingles Marbella are being finalised with construction due to start shortly. Previous Raffles Chelsea members include The Rolling Stones, Eric Clapton, Barbara Streisand, Vivienne Westwood and Princess Margaret to name (drop) but a few! Marbella has long been synonymous with entertaining the rich and famous so a move like this can only be good news for the chic Raffles brand and, of course, the high end Marbella residents that choose to live and party here. Kalid Virani, MD of Raffles, spoke exclusively to Marbella Rocks on their impending move: “Raffles Chelsea is very excited to become the latest addition to the Marbella social scene. We have chosen Marbella as our first foreign outpost with plans to open further locations in the US and the Middle East over the next 36 months. Many Raffles Chelsea members have second homes in Marbella and there is a need for a high end restaurant bar and club concept so it was a natural fit!”

This month sees the launch of a brand new concept in hair and beauty salons – Bardou. This unique, high-end brand, already causing a stir in the UK, specialises in express blow dry´s, colour, cuts and styling. As featured in Grazia and the Daily Mail, Bardou will also offer bespoke beauty packages, nails, semi-permanent make-up, HD Brows, extensions, LA weaves and much, much more. Set up by celebrity hairdresser Adee Phelan and TV personality Natalie Richardson from ITVBe´s Life on Marbs, you are sure to be in good hands with this stylish duo and their well coiffed team of top London and Marbella stylists. Based in the ever-popular Playas De Duque in Puerto Banus, Bardou is set to open its doors for business in March.

KING OF THE CASTLE

Fuengirola’s famous Sohail Castle will be converted into a magnificent, custom built concert venue for the iconic 80s band Simply Red on August 18th. Led by Mick Hucknall, Simply Red will perform all their hits including ‘Stars’, ‘If You Don't Know Me By Now’, ‘So Not Over You’ and of course their biggest hit ‘Money’s Too Tight To Mention’, plus songs from their new album Big Love. Tickets can be purchased online at www.crazymusicproductions. com while VIP tables can be booked by calling 952 883 832.

DY GYM OPENS A new and revolutionary gym concept has touched

down in Marbella. DY Gym, run by former Mr. Olympia Dorian Yates and business partner Kamel Abdel Rahman, has opened its doors and membership take-up is going through the roof! Dorian is on hand to manage, supervise and train his members and has flown the best American machinery in for its users. Alongside the gym there is a healthy living restaurant on site for members (and non-members) to enjoy meals and takeaways.

BLACK PANTHER BACKLASH

Beyoncé took to the Super Bowl 50 halftime show and surprised fans and supporters by delivering the most ground-breaking political message through her performance, dressed in a black leotard with a gold embellished jacket. The singer was surrounded by dancers who sported afros and black berets in reference to the Black Panther Party, a 60s group that advocated violence to correct racial injustice. At one point in the performance the back-up dancers and Beyoncé gave

a salute and they later formed an X formation in which social media fans were quick to spot the reference to Malcom X. Furthermore after the show her dancers were filmed in a video that was posted on the “Black Lives Matter” Twitter page holding up a sign that read ‘Justice 4 Mario Woods’. Woods was shot and killed in San Francisco by police officers on the afternoon of December 2nd after he refused commands to drop an 8 inch knife he was carrying. This year marks the 50th anniversary of the Black Panther Party, it was founded by Huey P Newton and Bobby Seale as a Black Nationalist

organisation and one of the most influential civil rights group of the late 60s. Beyoncé has spilt fans and activists alike on this performance due to the mass controversy but some fans are portraying the reference as bravery. Others are saying if a white singer coming out on stage with dancers dressed in white supremacist Ku Klux Klan white robes and pointy hats there would be out and out war. A bit of light entertainment for the half time show or Beyonce taking a huge stand?! – you decide!.

RnB singer Ciara is suing her ex Future for defamation after he revealed “intimate and untrue” details about their relationship. Ciara, 30, has filed papers in LA claiming that rapper Future has slandered her good name in the press and on the Internet. The court documents also mention Future's Twitter rants in which he claimed his ex was preventing him from seeing their child. "This bitch got control problems…" he shared online. "I gotta go through lawyers to see babyfuture…the f**kery for 15k a month. I jus want babyfuture that's all." If proven in court, it would mean Future would have to pay her $15 million in damages. The former couple who have a 20-month-old son, Future Jnr, met four years ago and were engaged in 2013 until reports of Future cheating surfaced. Future vehemently denies these rumours and has hit back at Ciara´s lawyers claiming he could be entitled to counter sue because of Ciara´s lyrics allegedly defaming him in her 2015 hit I Bet.

KANYE WEST $53 MILLION IN DEBT?!

The last person you expect to be any kind of debt is Kanye. He dresses his two year old daughter in designer furs and furthermore raps about his travels on private jets but recently the rapper sent his social media fans into a frenzy following a series of cryptic tweets claiming he is $53 million in debt which led to Kanye asking tech entrepreneurs Mark Zuckerberg and Larry Page for help in his tweets ‘I write this to you my brothers while still 53 million dollars in personal debt…Please pray we overcome…This is my true heart…’ he kept all his followers entertained

by completing the rant with ‘Mark Zuckerberg invest 1 billion dollars into Kanye West ideas’. The result of the financial loss comes from his new fashion line which has become widely popular after the likes of the Nike Air Yeezy sneakers. Kanye then stated that the tech gods have helped Africa by opening schools but they are shunning one of the world’s most high profile celebrities, ‘All you guys had meetings with me and no one lifted a finger to help’. We are sure this isn’t the last we hear of this!

The Revenant star has £170 million in his bank account and the world is his oyster, so why not! Mr DiCaprio, 41 showed he has no intention of slowing down after swooping the Best Actor gong. He was first spotted having an intimate conversation with TV presenter Laura Whitmore at the after party as she was seen whispering in his ear and staring at him intently. The conversation took a turn as he led the 30-year-old and her friends into his suite at the Rosewood Hotel in Holborn and she was seen leaving at 5am. However a spokesperson from Whitmore´s camp stated that Laura did not spend the night with Leo she was with a group of people who were all a part of the BAFTA celebrations. His second conquest was 24-year-old lingerie model Roxy Horner who like Miss Whitmore later joined his suite with friends. The ex of Joey Essex was already a public fan of the actor after posting a picture in 2012 telling followers ‘he was the definition of sexy’ but before we speculate she tried to squash the rumours by tweeting ‘FYI we all went our separate ways home, as friends do’. Well now we know for sure that Leo has a thing for blondes!

JOLIE AND PITT ADOPT NEW BABY According to reports the Hollywood duo have

adopted another baby boy from Cambodia, taking their brood to seven. Jolie who recently turned 40, took Allouy Shoun into her care when she discovered him whilst directing her latest project, First They Killed My Father. The actress reportedly failed to inform her 52-yearold husband about the new addition plans, claiming if he had an idea of what she was doing he would throw a fit and she had to take action after witnessing first-hand the area the little boy lived in. Pitt allegedly didn’t know about the Allouy until Angelina came back from filming (!) but it has been reported before that he wanted a ‘soccer team’ of children. Brad and Angelina already have adopted children Maddox, Pax and Zahara and their children own Shiloh, Vivienne and Knox.

Apple have announced the release of another iPhone due to hit stores in September. New features of the phone have emerged; ranging from wireless charging to a touchscreen with built in touch ID. It is believed that they are getting rid of the 3.5 headphone jack which means that customers will have to use either lightning compatible or wireless headsets. This comes after the major revelation that the home button is getting removed, filling the entire screen with the digital face of the phone which in our opinion looks brill! The new design looks like one of an innovation masterpiece and it is set to be released in September 2016 and will look a little something like this (Yay!):

MAKE-UP SETTING SPRAY

Girls, we all know the problem, you apply your make-up from foundation to mascara all ready for a night out on the town but if only it could sustain itself after numerous amounts of shots and moves on the dancefloor! There becomes a time during the night when applying your lipstick in the toilet everytime you visit becomes a headache so you decide to just let it all wear off! But if you didn’t know already there is a product which can prevent all this – Make-up setting spray, a light spritz on your face can keep your make-up on all night…or so they say! We have tried and tested the top two setting sprays and put them to the test during a night out, read our reviews to gain our all important verdict. NYX Matte Finish - Long Lasting Durable €7 - Lightweight - Comfortable - Matte and Shine Free VERDICT: Our tester applied the setting spray on top of her make-up at 6pm and by 10pm it was still going strong. The spray was easy to use and didn’t feel heavy or wet. It keeps make-up looking flawless all night long and actually keeps pores nice

and tight. It leaves your skin with a nice subtle glow and the staying power of the make-up definitely doubled. Not as long lasting as was hoped though – noticeably wearing off around the midnight mark! Rocks Rating: Urban Decay De Slick - Oil Control Make-Up Setting Spray €30 - High Tech Ingredients - Temperature Control Technology - Microfine Mist VERDICT: With the USP being that the spray controlled the oil balance on the skin, it was put to the test. Within 4 hours of applying the spray there was noticeably a big difference in oil outbreak. It was not until 2am that the oil began to come through but the make-up did look less shiny and rarely needed to be touched up. Our tester went even further to state that after a few intial spritzes the appearance looked better than the initial application. Rocks Rating:

RECIPE

news

SWEET POTATO & SALMON FISH CAKES This delicious and healthy fishcake recipe takes only 30 minutes to make and yields 4 large fishcakes, perfect for a main course. Serve with a herb mayonnaise or tartare sauce on fresh steamed greens or a mixed salad.

INGREDIENTS

• 1 lb/450g peeled, sweet potato • 150g freshly cooked salmon fillet, skinned • 3 tsp thai green curry paste • 1 tbsp dried breadcrumbs & 2 tbsp for coating • 1 tbsp fresh cilantro/coriander leaf, finely chopped • Salt and pepper • 3 tbsp vegetable oil for frying

METHOD

1. Cube the sweet potato into roughly 1"/2.5cm pieces. Place in a pan of cold water with a pinch of salt, bring to the boil and cook the potato until soft. 2. Place the thai curry paste in a large bowl, add the drained, sweet potato and mash loosly with a fork

or potato masher. 3. Flake the salmon and add to the potato mash and gently stir through. 4. Add the breadcrumbs to the potato mash and stir well, add the chopped cilantro/coriander leaves, stir again. Season well with salt and freshly ground black pepper. 5. Divide the mixture equally into 4, roll in to a ball, then gently flatten to create a fishcake. The mixture is quite soft so handle with care. 6. Place the remaining breadcrumbs in a shallow dish. One by one, gently press the fishcake in to the breadcrumbs, flip over and make sure the whole cake has a light covering of crumbs. Repeat with the remaining three cakes. Place the fishcakes in the fridge for 15 minutes to chill. 7. Heat the oil in a frying pan until hot but not smoking. Cook the fishcakes one at a time for 3-4 minutes on each side or until a crisp golden brown. Keep warm in the oven until ready to serve.

WINE MATCH The best wine match for fish in general is a white wine more so than a red as the light crisp texture isn’t as heavy when accompanying a dish such as these fishcakes. This meal is also quite hot as it contains chilli and thai green curry paste therefore it’s best served with chilled wine to break up the spiciness instead of red typically served at room temperature. In order to refresh the palette and cut through the oiliness of fried fish a crisp white wine is required and definitely compliments this style of fish. A dry white wine is best served with salmon fishcakes like a minerally Sauvignon Blanc or a crisp Sancerre would be a good pairing. The fish is more than likely to have a delicate flavour so it is advised to avoid oaked wines and those made from strong flavoured varieties of grape as they can sometimes overcompensate the fish instead of enhancing the flavour.

ALBUM REVIEW

MY BIG FAT GREEK WEDDING 2

BON JOVITHIS HOUSE IS NOT FOR SALE

BOOK REVIEW

JUST FALL NINA SADOWSKY

Who'd have thought My Big Fat Greek Wedding could have an even bigger, fatter, ‘Greeker' sequel. Well this March the romantic comedy takes your cinemas by storm and it won´t disappoint. Featuring most of the same characters you know and love from the original film but this time around it’s actually Toula's parents getting married... for the second time. When they suddenly discover that on the day of their marriage 50 years ago, the priest didn't sign the wedding license, the couple decide it's a great excuse to have another ceremony to tie the knot, but this time legally and filled with even more Greek traditions and of course more food! In the midst of the chaotic wedding organising, Toula and Ian's now 16-year-old daughter Paris is going through a tough time growing up in an outrageous Greek family trying her best to fit in with the rest of her peers despite them causing a scene wherever she goes. When applying for colleges Paris chooses to branch out as far away as possible instead of studying locally, much to the families disappointment. For Paris it’s an easy escape route from her claustrophobic and mostly crazy relatives. During the hectic wedding plans while trying to deal with a stroppy adolescent, Toula and Ian take some time out to rekindle the passion they once had in their own relationship that we all watched blossom in the first film. However being caught having a fondle in the back seats of Ian's jeep, by Toula's parents wasn't exactly part of the plan. This romcom is a great familyfun film and is filled with comical scenes that remind us of the original, from using windex as a cure for everything and to Aunt Voula never resisting a sexual connotation, it’s a must see for March.

Bon Jovi goes back to his hard rocking ways for his new album released this month. The main man himself states that the album is ‘really going back to the beginning’ in terms of their sound. Prior to this new album release Bon Jovi explains that they used to record their parts separately in which it was then placed together by a producer which as a result has changed the fluidity of their sound. The new soundtrack was recorded at the place the band cut ‘Runaway’ in which Bon Jovi used to sweep the floor and fetch the coffees, although Bon Jovi then cheekily admitted that he still fetched coffee but this time for long time bandmates, keyboardist David Bryan and drummer Tico Torres! The new music is a reflection of the evolution of the group, the album features tracks which the band envisioned the audience singing and clapping along too. They wanted to bring the tour to life through the album itself. Their 14th LP has a resemblance of their first iconic tracks the band debuted and emphasises a real feel good aspect through the instruments and lyrics used. The new album has a different mood from the usual lively rock sound but reassures fans that this is the most proud he has ever been of his soundtrack and is counting down the days in which fans can all listen and agree! This House Is Not For Sale marks the first Bon Jovi album completely lacking the input of guitarist Richie Sambora who quit the band in 2013. Selected tracks on the album talk about the difficulties Jon went through from 2014 till 2015. The tracks bare the bones of every element of how he dealt with his struggles and is an eye opener to all his fans. Bon Jovi´s honesty and integrity is vital at this stage of their career and the album is sure to take a top spot in the charts when it is released, with the sound promising to revisit the beginning of the band we are all definitely in for a treat!

Nina releases her debut novel this month set in New York City and the tropical island of St Lucia, which is balanced on the edge of moral ambiguity. The novel spirals on a sexy and seductive theme and asks the questions ‘How can you find out that the person you love is a killer…and continue to love him anyway?.’ This book is perfect for fans of Sandra Brown and Karen Rose. Just Fall follows the story of Ellie, she is leading a perfect life and is set to marry the love of her life the charming and handsome Rob the next morning, but her world suddenly collapses when she learns that Rob could actually be a cold blooded killer. The story takes a dramatic turn as Ellie is taken into a terrifying rollercoaster of lies, deceit and heartache. The couple’s relationship is indeed a dangerous and thrilling one. The novel challenges Ellie’s love for Rob and the extreme lengths she will go to protect him. From Manhattan to the Caribbean, the couple struggle to escape the shadow of Robs former life, one of which his nearest and dearest are making sure he never forgets. The book is a compulsive read and explores the depths that offer family and human connection and the costs we have to deal with when things begin to get disruptive. Just Fall is an ultimatum of what she needs to do, either become a murderer herself to save her soulmate or to let him die. Her decision transforms her life and throws her into turmoil of a whiplash paced adventure filled with twists and turns through a devilish tale of love, lies and the deciding factor of betrayal packed up in a way you want but never in the way you expect which constantly leaves you surprised.

BUSSLR Social Life Transform Your

An exciting new social events mobile app - Busslr - is about to revolutionise the way we organise our social lives and get active. We all know organising events and activities in our personal lives and for business can be stressful, time consuming and frustrating. Busslr can take the hassle out of arranging a planned or spontaneous social gathering with friends or family by combining the power of multiple social channels in one easy and free to use communication tool. The simple, yet incredibly smart mobile app is now live in the App Store and on Google Play, and available to download for free on iOS and Android mobile devices for use in the Marbella, Sotogrande and Gibraltar areas. Marbella Rocks caught up with the brains behind the Gibraltar-based operation, Paul Overton and Stephen Tate, to let you in on the app that will transform the way we arrange our social lives. HOW DID YOU COME UP WITH THE IDEA FOR BUSSLR? Paul: As enthusiastic cyclists, we were fed up having to interact with multiple channels and have email streams, SMS chats, WhatsApp and Messenger groups all open just to create a simple bike ride at the weekend. The idea

26 MARBELLAROCKS | ISSUE 18

for Busslr was born. It does it all quickly and with minimal fuss without ever having to leave the mobile app. SO HOW DOES IT DIFFER FROM FACEBOOK AND OTHER SOCIAL CHANNELS? Stephen: App users can send all invites out in one hit through Busslr, instead of having to access all of the various social tools to reach their entire intended guest list. Plus track RSVPs, banter with guests via the in-app chat feature, pin your event location on a map, and share photos of the event amongst those who attended‌all without leaving Busslr. HOW DOES IT HELP LOCAL USERS? Paul: Busslr is clever enough to help you find fun things to do in your area. Find the cool stuff you want to do by personalising your own Discovery Wall, where you will only see the local events that match your pre-selected personal profile. Stephen: I travel a lot, and when I arrive somewhere new, it would be great to find stuff going on that I am interested in. Busslr can put it all on my Discovery Wall, so I don´t have to spend hours doing searches for individual events and activities happening in a new area.

news IT IS PROVEN (DESPITE THE AGE OLD SAYING OPPOSITES ATTRACT!) THAT MANY PEOPLE FIND PARTNERS WITH COMMON INTERESTS & HOBBIES. IS THERE A DATING/ MATCHMAKING SIDE TO THE BUSSLR APP? Paul: Busslr has what we call the Attraction Tag. It makes it easy to let someone know that you like them if they also happen to be a Busslr user. Just click on their profile pic, which takes you to a new screen, then click on the pink ‘Attraction’ button. If the feeling is mutual, Busslr will let you both know. The best part is there’s no fear of rejection at Busslr, because we’ll only send the attraction notification when the feeling is definitely a two-way street. HOW DO BUSINESSES BENEFIT FROM BUSSLR? Paul: The versatile app is perfect for businesses looking to reach a wider local audience and increase their current revenues. Busslr delivers an easy and targeted way to promote events, activities, and promotions; post them on the Discovery Wall, and tap into a local audience looking for events like yours. Stephen: Businesses want to find people, new customers, but advertising is expensive and difficult to measure because users profile themselves for their interests, it is now easy for business to show their upcoming events in real time.

SAN ROQUE GOLF CLUB CASE STUDY

Recently, the San Roque Golf Club signed on board with Busslr. The San Roque Club is one of the finest and most exclusive golfing destinations on the Cost del Sol. Since opening its doors in 1991, it quickly became the golf resort of choice in Sotogrande, and along with Valderrama and the Real Club Sotogrande this became known as the golden triangle of golf. Both of the San Roque Club’s 18-hole greens are championship courses that attract a large number of golf groups traveling to the area for the ultimate golfing day out or holiday. Many of these groups live in either neighbouring towns or even overseas. The Club’s Premium Subscription will allow their event management to communicate with its

large local and international membership with ease. They will be able to post their regular tournament schedule and interclubs, as well as their rich corporate and social events calendar to Busslr’s Discovery Wall. Those who live within a 50 km radius of the Club and who are Busslr users will automatically be able to see the Club’s event postings, and can respond directly to them within the app. The Club can track attendance, who and how many of their members are expected at various events. Plus a dedicated in-app chat feature means Club management can speak directly to event attendees in real-time, as well as share event photos during and after the event has taken place.

WHAT TO DO IF YOU’VE BEEN BURGLED STATISTICS IN SPAIN

Crime rates in Spain remain among the lowest in the EU according to the latest Interior Ministry crime report. However, since the economic crisis began in 2008, there has been a steep increase in domestic burglaries and theft as a result. In 2012 the number of burglaries in homes rose by 25.4%. The message to expat residents is not to panic. There are some simple precautions to take, as you would back in the UK, such as fitting security grills, installing exterior lights and alarms, being careful about what content is posted on social networks, especially anything to do with trips and holidays away from home. It also helps to take out a quality home insurance policy that will cover your home and its contents should any unfortunate incident occur.

WHEN YOU DISCOVER YOU'VE BEEN BURGLED

As soon as you discover you’ve been burgled, whether it’s a break-‐in

or theft at your home, first call the police. Don’t touch anything until they arrive. A police report will be needed to process your claim. Then secure your home to avoid further damage, board up any broken windows, make a list of damaged or missing belongings, detail the damage to your home resulting from the burglary, taking photographs of damaged windows or door. At this point, you can call the claims department of your home insurance company. We advise you to have your policy on hand when you call.

PEACE OF MIND WITH LINEA DIRECTA

We understand that your peace-‐of-‐mind is important, especially in your home. Our claims department will take a full statement of the circumstances of the incident. We will check the insurance coverage with you explaining all the procedures. If emergency repairs are required from locksmiths to glaziers, we will

help you swiftly handle your claim and get things back to normal as soon as possible. Fortunately, incidents of theft in Spain are relatively small compared to other EU countries, however should you be burgled, your homeowner’s insurance policy will cover the loss or destruction of personal property if it’s stolen from your home

HOLD UP OUTSIDE THE HOME

In many cases, your home insurance policy may cover you for any incidents that occur outside your home. Should you be the victim of a hold-‐up outside your premises your personal belongings are covered. We will ensure replacement documents are quickly and efficiently dealt with, and if required, arrange the locks on your home to be changed.

Ariana Grande Singer, songwriter, dancer, actress, charity worker, philanthropist and feminist

T

here´s many strings to Ariana Grande´s bow these days… and at 22 that´s quite an impressive instrument! Mind you, like her touring partner Bieber, Ariana started young. Born in Florida to middle class parents, Ariana won numerous leads in

local theatre before landing her big break in 13 on Broadway aged 14. Having showcased her musical and acting ability, she was plucked from relative obscurity to take the lead as Cat Valentine in Nickelodeon hit TV series Victorious in 2009. After recording the Victorious soundtrack,

Ariana then landed a six-figure recording deal with Republic Records. Her debut album Yours Truly catapulted her to number 1 in the US Billboard Chart. Less than a year later she brought out a much-anticipated follow up album My Everything, which also went straight to the number one slot. Popular tracks including “Bang Bang”, “Break Free” and “Love Me Harder” propelled her to 34 continuous weeks in the top 10 and she boasted the most top 10 singles of any artist in 2014 – overtaking Rihanna. After a break from the recording studio to complete her first ever world tour in 2015, she also gueststarred in the Fox Comedy Series Scream Queens. Ariana is now close to releasing her third studio album and it´s tipped to be her best one yet. Her mum took to Twitter saying her daughter’s vocals on the new album “are to die for.” Of course your mum would say that we hear you say! But… for a singer and lyricist who has the widest vocal range of any young talent out there – akin to none other than Mariah Carey – expect some huge smashes from this pint sized popstar later this year.

FEMINIST FATALE

Despite being so young, Ariana has definitely waded into a mature discussion – feminism. Ariana has been very vocal on her views and regularly uses her public profile to discuss matters of misogyny and sexism in the media. “I know y’all already know this but the double standard and misogyny are still ever present,” she said. “I can’t wait to live in a world where

features people are not valued by who they’re dating/married to/attached to, having sex with (or not) seen with… but by their value as individuals. I want the people reading this to know they are MORE THAN enough on their own.” Ariana added, "If a woman has a lot of sex (or any sex for that matter)… she's a ‘slut.' If a man has sex…. he's. a stud, a boss, a king. If a woman even talks about sex openly she is shamed! But if a man talks or raps freely about all the women (or more commonly used 'bitches'/'hoes'…how lovely) he's had… he is regaled. This has got to change.” What not a lot of people know is that Ariana comes from a long bloodline of female activists. Her aunt Judy was the first Italian American female president of the national press club in Washington DC and a Pulitzer Prize winner before she died of cancer in 2008. Her grandmother and aunt were also linked to the famous feminist Gloria Steinem. Ariana recently posted a tweet of Judy and Gloria together saying “Queen´s of My Heart.”

PHILANTHROPIST

Ariana was brought up in a strict Roman Catholic family but turned her back on Catholicism during the reign of Pope Benedict, citing opposition to the church´s stance on homosexuality. Ariana´s brother Frankie is openly gay and she says she cannot support a religion that does not believe in homosexuality. She has followed Kabbalah teachings (like her brother) since the age of 12 believing that if you are kind to others good will happen to you. She has also always fought passionately for matters that lie close to her heart. At the age of 10, she cofounded the South Florida youth singing group Kids Who Care, which raised over $500,000 for charities in 2007 alone. She has also featured in antibullying, Stand up to Cancer and animal cruelty campaigns. Her latest venture is with MAC Cosmetics, where she has launched a line of lip products where all of the profits go to helping people with HIV and Aids.

DIVA FEVER

It´s not all been plain sailing for Ariana Grande however. She has been accused by fans and the media for being a bit of a diva in the past. This mostly comes from accusations that she demands to be photographed and filmed from the left side. E! presenter Giuliana

32 MARBELLAROCKS | ISSUE 18

Rancic revealed that Ariana's team asked her to switch sides so Ariana could film only showing her left side! Apparently it has something to do with liking her dimple which is more pronounced on this cheek. Plus a recent blog post by Dan O'Connor made headlines when he described a negative experience he and his daughters had when meeting Ariana during a special fan contest in connection with the MTV VMAs. Dan's daughter had won a special fan-art contest, and the family was given a chance to meet Ariana backstage. Apparently, she was rude to his daughters, refusing to make small talk and not even asking their names. He also claims that Ariana made his daughters delete photos they had taken of themselves handing their winning fan art to her. Later, after the post went viral, a different fan shared an alleged DM conversation with Ariana over Twitter, where she claimed she only walked away from them because the art featured her late grandfather and she "didn't want them to see her cry." Whatever happened at the VMA ś is left unresolved as its Dan ś word against Ariana's. What we do know is that this 22 year-old star shows no sign of fading, with 2016 set to be her biggest year yet. Watch this space.

Tuesday March 8th brings International Women’s Day and what better way to celebrate by showcasing the women who have shaped and improved the world we live in through their admirable talents and ambitious mindsets. We have set aside a range of woman which differ in age and culture but all have the same thing in common: they have inspired others. From the life changers who made history to the celebrities which use their high status’ in good vain. The world we live in would not be the same for women if these ladies had never stepped out of the norm and made historic stands which would last forever.

LIFE CHANGERS

Because she… formed the Women’s Social and Political Union (WSPU) in 1903 whose members were later dubbed ‘the suffragettes’ in support of women’s suffrage and the right to vote. If it wasn´t for Pankhurst heading the movement and organising demonstrations, hunger strikes and even arson attacks, it is unlikely that women would be entitled to the same equal voting rights as men.

Because she… is a civil rights activist regarded as an international symbol of dignity, bravery and strength. Her refusal to give up her seat to a white passenger on a public bus in Montgomery, Alabama in 1955 helped global efforts to end the segregation of public facilities in the US. Supported by a young Dr Martin Luther King Jr, Parks boycott lasted over a year and helped to end black/white segregation.

36 MARBELLAROCKS | ISSUE 18

features Because she… is an incredible author and an inspirational feminist. Her creation of the heroine Elizabeth Bennet taken from the nations favourite book ‘Pride and Prejudice’ empowered women everywhere. Jane had to struggle to get her book published due having little education and even when ‘Pride and Prejudice’ was first offered to a publisher in 1797 it was refused without a glance. After Austen´s death the books were published and, two centuries later, her novels still touch people’s hearts like no other author in history.

Because she… wrote a diary during the World War II about her life during the Holocaust. The whole time she was hiding in an office building, attempting to escape the Nazis. Her life changing diary was internationally acclaimed after her father published it two years after her demise. It was translated into various languages and even an adaptation of a movie was created in her memory.

FIGURE HEADS

Because she…paved the way for women in politics and business by becoming the first British female prime minister from 1979 to 1990. A grocer´s daughter, Thatcher was brought up to believe in hard work and public service. Despite several failed attempts in politics throughout her career, she eventually was elected as leader of the Conservative Party and won the General Election. Although unpopular among working classes, Thatcher dubbed the Iron Lady, was successful in a number of policies including the Falklands War and privatising public services. She was famously quoted as saying: “If you want something, said, ask a man; if you want something done, ask a woman.”

Because she… used her royal status to do good and bring charitable causes to the public eye. She singlehandedly brought the landmine issue to the world’s attention, which resulted in representatives from 100 countries signing the Oslo Treaty, intending to rid the world of landmines. Diana developed the name of ‘The People´s Princess’ as she was the world’s role model from helping homeless to her charity work in AIDS research. The world was in despair after her sudden death in a car crash which killed her and her boyfriend Dodi Fayed in Paris in 1997.

Because she… is the first lady of the United States. Michelle has made a huge mark in the world in only 4 years since her husband Obama came to office. A graduate of Princeton and then Harvard Law, she used her new found international fame to encourage movements to combat childhood obesity and increase support for troops as well as helping more Americans to obtain higher education. She is widely considered as one of the most influential first lady´s in US history.

Because she… is a US presidential candidate and the only first lady to run for public office. Although she didn´t win, she gains respect of women everywhere as she showcases that women can be just as powerful as men. She also encourages girls to support each other instead of being jealous. Hilary had to undergo upsetting situations (namely her husband´s indescretion with Monica Lewinsky) but that did not stop her from going from strength to strength and relishing the power she has worked so hard for.

ACTRESSES Because she…is known for splitting her time between her extensive humanitarian work and pioneering celebrity adoption. Four of her seven children are adopted, children who would’ve otherwise suffered in poverty. She went on her first overseas mission; an 18 day trip to war torn Sierra Leone and Tanzania. She then followed that up with a two-week trip back to Cambodia which led to her being named a UNHCR Goodwill Ambassador. Her good willed work never seems to stop as she also set up the Maddox Jolie-Pitt Foundation to create environmental security, peace and stability in communities around the world.

Because she… is an actress who is not afraid to air her opinion. From openly speaking about the importance of gender equality and bringing up ageism in the media. Her honesty and integrity about issues that matter inspire women of all ages not to shy away. So women stand up and be brave!

Because she… is a mother, businesswoman, actress, producer and director. She balanced the launch of her brand new make-up line ‘Flower’ whilst expecting her new baby. The purpose of her make-up is to inspire women to feel good about themselves and who better to promote this than a lady who is comfortable in her own skin, selfless, witty and confident.

38 MARBELLAROCKS | ISSUE 18

Because she… promotes feminism and goodwill. Growing up playing a main character in one of the biggest children films ever, Watson understands she has a young following. She unleashed the epic ‘He for She’ speech at the UN that made people realise she is a true feminist in a public arena where many actresses of her calibre shy away. She continues to fight for gender equality insisting this is “her true passion in life.”

MODELS

Because she… is the most iconic figure of the sixties who inspired the introduction of London Fashion Week and alongside Mary Quant pioneered “the mini skirt”. She was nominated for ‘Face of 1966’ and ‘British Woman of the Year 1966’ and she extended her persona trying out modelling and acting. Twiggy is known for her out there style and her beauty is edgy but timeless.

Because she… is the IT girl right now. You will see her face on billboards, TV and magazines worldwide. She uses her big name to empower fans across the world to ‘stop labelling and start living!’ She shot to fame through walking the runways for the likes of Burberry and Givenchy and her trademark eyebrows have set her apart from the crowd - proving quirky beauty is still in. Plus, Cara is an all action girl that can act and sing, proving to young girls everywhere that you can have it all.

SINGERS

that designers of the time were only from upper class families. If it was not for this wonderful lady and her boundless creativity, you may have never been able to wear a pair of trousers as they were strictly for men only.

Because she… has it all. Her music, beauty and existence has lived on for years to entertain and inspire women of all ages. The material girl has released her 13th studio album at the age of 56, she exemplifies the idea that age is a state of mind and she plans to banish ageism for once and all.

Because she… is in a world of her own! She teaches women that individuality is key and it is ok to be different. From her show stopping outfit choices and her motivational songs such as ‘Born this Way’ she really is in a league of her own and an inspiration to women everywhere.

Because she… is an inspirational singer. Her fame derives from her association with the civil rights movement in which classic songs such as ‘Four Women’ emerged. She was born into a poor family and her quick talent with music and playing the piano at age of 3 helped her to earn the opportunity to study at Juilliard as a teenager and her legacy still lives on to this day.

Because she… is a world acclaimed fashion designer! Her style takes the form of comfort with a nod to the latest fashion trends. Diane was the daughter of a Holocaust survivor. She went on to be a successful student whilst attending university in Switzerland and her hunger for independence led her to become a socialite in New York hanging out with people who did not care about money. Diane is a self-made successful women. When her initial business was not a success she started again from scratch and made it to the top due to sheer determination.

Because she… is a successful female entrepreneur. Natalie is the founder of internationally successful fashion portal ‘Net-aporter.’ The business was launched from her flat in Chelsea and she personally raised the £1.2 million start-up costs. Since 2013 she has been the chairwoman of the British Fashion Council. Natalie has been single handily changing the way designer fashion is retailed to the public. Her business has been going strength to strength including the print magazine ‘Porter’ which was created in 2014.

FASHION Because she… is an international designer who trademarked the little black dress and suits. She was raised in an orphanage and taught how to sew. Coco used her imagination and creativity to climb to the top, an arduous task in itself given

Because she… was the brains and beauty behind the iconic “Mini Skirt”. The British fashion queen pioneered the Londonbased mod and youth fashion movement and was the first person to ever design and sell a mini skirt. She advocates people dressing to please themselves, not others.

TOTAL MAKEOVER M

Marbella Rocks new fashion columnist Carla Melus is the owner of chic concept store Flamingo Market Place in Puerto Banus. She trained to be a stylist in London and Paris under Alexander McQueen. Spanish born Carla is inspired by new, retro fashion trends and has sourced the world´s fashion fairs and catwalks - as far afield as Vegas and New York - to bring top global brands such as Dimepiece, TIALS, Lonely Hearts and Boy London to Marbella. She has worked on ITV´s the X Factor and styled Danni Minogue to name (drop!) a few. You couldn´t be in safer hands! 44 MARBELLAROCKS | ISSUE 18

arbella Rocks has a winner of the Total Makeover competition announced in our August Issue. After sifting through dozens of applicants, 38-year-old Nicky Lacey from Sotogrande was chosen because she is a busy, working mum-of-two, who has little time (if any!) to spend on herself - juggling a full-time career, young kids and housework with no outside help. It was decided that with a complete wardrobe makeover, style sessions and a shopping trip we could give Nicky that much needed confidence boost. Plus, as we call it The Total Makeover – we gave Nicky a bit of extra assistance from our talented team - Susan at Imperia Beauty, Jana at Prestige Hair Extensions, Lance at Bliss Hair & Beauty and make-up artist Una Magdalena at Marbella Event Academy. Plus, to top it all off a glam photoshoot with leading Costa del Sol photographer Emma Knapp. Pictures she can treasure and keep forever.

BEFORE

after

EXTENSIONS

We really wanted to give Nicky´s hair a bit of volume and because she has had the same mid-length haircut for years, we decided to go for extensions, giving her 18 inches of the finest hair by Prestige Hair Extensions based in Marbella. Senior technician Jana Hartmanova colour matched the hair and choose a mixture of browns with a touch of golden blonde. Her hair wasn’t actually previously highlighted just naturally tinted by the sun so this natural look works perfectly for her. NOTE: With Nicky´s busy lifestyle you may think extensions might not be the right road to go down but what people don´t actually realise is that extensions can sometimes be easier to manage. They only require washing once or twice a week so after a good blow dry and a bit of dry shampoo to take away any excess grease from the roots – Nicky´s long locks are good to go.

CUT & STYLING

After the extensions were complete we finished this off with a simple layered cut and blow dry from creative director, Lance Kearley, at Bliss Hair & Beauty. He also decided to curl just the ends of the hair for the shoot to make the look even more cool and cutting edge.

FASHION NEW WARDROBE

Nicky has a fabulous figure, despite being 38, she is actually an ideal client to work with because so many styles and silhouettes can actually suit her. As Nicky is forever in drab work clothes for her office job as an accountant in Gibraltar, we decided to style her for a muchneeded night out on the town with friends. To avoid the age-old mutton/lamb conundrum we decided to go for a sophisticated shirt and skirt ensemble. Some of the long dresses she tried on drowned her petite 5ft 2inch figure and as she was used to trouser suits for work, jeans were a no go. Eventually after a mammoth trying on session In Flamingo Market Place we went for a blue feather skirt from Gold Label Wow Couture and Blessed Are The Meek white sheer shirt – showing off Nicky´s stunning figure and perfect pins. We also gave her a blue, white and yellow fur shrug that was playful and fun and injected a pop of colour. To top this look off we paired with a matching blue handbag from Lemon Jelly and gold, spikey jewellery from Joomi Lim and sky high heels from Senso…cute, girly but ultimately sexy was the look we were aiming for and Nicky definitely nailed it.

MAKE UP

Una Magdalena, MEA´s leading make-up artist took the lead with Nicky´s photoshoot look. As she had a “wow effect” outfit the make-up was played down slightly with a sheer coverage base and a light brown and gold eyeshadow to accentuate her green eyes. After this mascara and a set of lashes was put on and a light pink, lip plumping gloss to give her the best pout. To go with her cool blue outfit a matching coloured nail polish was chosen for her hands and toes.

PHoTOSHOOT

After the makeover, Nicky was whisked to Sotogrande for a photoshoot with leading photographer Emma Knapp against a backdrop of luxury yachts and a marina setting. She enjoyed the shoot and took to the modeling like a pro. There were 3 scenery changes.. the courtyard, marina and finally in bar called The Hairy Lemon – where we got the ultimate picture. Since the makeover win and before going to print it was discovered that Nicky was actually leaving Sotogrande to go back to the UK – the pictures of her have become even more poignant knowing that this may be one of the last times she’s in her hometown.

luttery Falsies are the ultimate weapon to inject drama and glamour into your look. But dealing with positioning and the complicated time frame of ‘glue-drying’ can be a pretty daunting task. Ever approached the lash counter and frantically asked yourself: “Which ones are right for me?” “How will I apply them?” “What if they fall off?” Well, panic no more… Read on to find out everything you need to know about false lashes…

STRIP LASHES

These are the ones you’re probably most familiar with. They consist of natural or synthetic fibers that are attached together by either a clear or dark strip as a base. HAIR & BEAUTY you want a little more length or used to fill in spots that require an extra lash or two. These lashes are notoriously fussy to work with however, and if they’re not placed at the right angle they can look a bit lopsided. ACCENT LASHES

These are perfect for those of you who don’t want to take the complete plunge with a full set of lashes. Or if you want something a little subtler just to open up your eyes and add a hint of glamour. Top Buy: Ardell Accent Lashes €6

LAST BUT DEFINITELY NOT LEAST…

EYELASH EXTENSIONS

Individual eyelashes are attached to your natural hairs with a waterproof bonding agent. This technique can last for up to 4 weeks and can look incredibly natural. Make sure to have the lashes trimmed to your liking!

HOW TO APPLY STRIP LASHES

Make sure you curl your lashes for extra oomph (Shu Uemura curlers are the best!) Also apply a light application of mascara just so the falsies blend better into your natural lashes. Step 1: Remove the lashes from the container by pushing down on the center of the lash strip with your thumb. Do not pull from either end of the strip in case you stretch or tear them. (Keep the box for when you want to re-use them) Step 2: Try them up to your lash line to gauge how much needs to be trimmed off to fit your eye. (Trim them from the outside) Strip Lashes typically have smaller lashes at the inner corners to mimic natural lash growth so you want to keep those.

Step 3: Wrap your lash around an eye pencil/brush or even your finger for a few seconds to manipulate them into a curved shape. Step 4: Apply some glue (Duo glue is the best) along the band. Wait for roughly 60 seconds until the glue goes tacky before applying. This makes it much easier to place the lashes in the correct position. Step 5: Use tweezers or a cotton bud to place the lash in the correct position, there’s no need to rush because you’ll know when the glue is drying because it will turn clear. Step 6: Apply a second coat of mascara on top and then you’re good to go! Time to get your flirt on Lashionistas!!!

FROM LA TO LONDON TO MARBELLA Celebrity hairdresser and TV star Adee trained with Lee Stafford before going on to star in Channel 4´s The Salon, The Secret Millionaire and Shear Genius in LA. He has styled some of the world´s top celebrities including David Beckham, Leonardo DiCaprio and Liza Minelli. He was even the brains behind Beckham´s infamous Mohawk haircut which spawned millions of copycat looks. After living in LA for 6 years, Adee came back to London to set up Bardou. The Covent Garden salon is now the top destination for stars and stylish Londoners. Due to his 17-year-long friendship with Marbella TV star Natalie Richardson and seeing a huge gap in the market here for a seriously sexy and chic salon, Adee and Natalie decided to launch Bardou Marbella. The stylish salon opens its doors for business this month. 74 MARBELLAROCKS | ISSUE 18

It´s funny because the culture of the UK is a bar on every corner! Whereas the culture of LA is a blow dry bar on every corner! When I came back to the UK from LA in 2014 I just knew I had to set up this style of business and Bardou was born. Like London, Marbella is a fast paced place in the summer and girls need somewhere to go to have their hair and make-up done in 35 minutes. Bardou can cater for this. As well as doing colours, cuts, extensions, beauty and men´s cuts, the Express side of Bardou´s booming business is really taking off. The menu system we have at Bardou is like a menu system you´d have in a cocktail bar! It´s 1 to 9 from big and bouncy to smooth, textured, curly and wavy! People can come in and choose the number that suits them. Our team at Bardou are expert stylists with 15 years experience. They are fashion forward, inspired by the catwalks and driven by new trend generation. Plus I will also be available to cater to your every whim on appointment with my special VIP room! Here´s my guide to the ultimate Bardou blowdrys. Which one are you going to go for?

BARDOU BLOWOUTS

7

3 The Bardou

A sleek, polished and groomed look to suit any occasion, day or night. This beautiful blowout is for those who like hair to scream “expensive” with voluminous roots and voluptuous curls.

The VaVaVoom

Stand back, this style needs some space. Beautiful brushed out curls that leave the hair big and bouncy with tons of movement. For volume that starts at the root and stays until the end.

4 The Bardou Updo

Elegant and effortless, think Breakfast at Tiffany´s beauty Audrey Hepburn but with a modern twist. We add some movement in the front to frame the face and add height at the crown defining retro glamour.

8 The Bossy Bardou

COUNTING CALORIES

NUTRITION’S

FATTEST

The newest edition to the booming fitness industry on the coast, Luke is owner and coach of Marbella´s first “women´s only outdoor boot camp company” – Miss Fit Marbella. Luke specialises in fitness for women, (weight loss and toning) and is a strong believer in training outdoors, which is why, all of his sessions are based on the beaches of Marbella, Puerto Banus and Nueva Andalucia. Expect to find articles that focus on exercise for the female sex, tips on how to achieve your body goals, help on those stubborn problem areas, education of nutrition and lifestyle and how exercise doesn’t have to be boring! “Don’t mistake fitness for a gym! Fitness is more than that, it is a lifestyle and can be anywhere or everywhere!”

MYTH I s a calorie of veg the same as a calorie of sugar? And is a calorie of sugar the same as a calorie of meat? In short the answer is NO! This is why blindly counting calories can lead us to scratching our heads, wondering why the weight isn´t shifting. It seems as if in today´s society, everyone of us are a slave to counting calories. Do you check the labels? Do you even know what they mean?! Unfortunately, marketing and advertising makes us believe that every product is, of course, healthy and low in calories but; what they don’t tell us is…a calorie is not just a calorie! Well, scientifically, 1 calorie of anything carries the same amount of energy. However, a calorie of one type of food can have a completely different effect on the body compared to another. The type of calorie massively effects; firstly, the hormones in our bodies and secondly the chemical balances, which in turn effect our metabolism and hunger levels. So I am going to take you through 3 essentials you must know when counting calories!

NUMBER 1 - THE THERMIC EFFECT

Protein calories are less fattening that carbohydrate and fat calories because they take more energy to break down. Protein: 20-35% of calories burned through processing. Carbohydrates: 5-15% of calories burned through processing. Fats: 0-5% of calories burned through processing. To put this into perspective, imagine this scenario: • If you took 100 calories of protein, once processed it equates to 65-80 calories. • If you took 100 calories of carbs, once processed it equates to 85-95 calories. • If you took 100 calories of fat, once processed it equates to 95-100 calories. This all comes down to how efficient the metabolic pathway of a food is. In Lehman’s terms protein is less efficient than

78 MARBELLAROCKS | ISSUE 18

HEALTH & FITNESS

carbohydrates or fats; therefore more work is needed to process protein and more calories are lost via heat when metabolised. This immediately shows us that a calorie is not a calorie!

CALORIE TIP: I suggest taking a good amount of protein and whole foods to help increase metabolism and lose weight. Examples of GOOD foods to eat include; whole foods (oats, fish, meat, beans, nuts).

NUMBER 2 - SATIETY INDEX

Protein calories decrease our hunger and lead to more weight loss than fat or carbohydrate calories. The Satiety Index is a measure of the ability of food to make us feel less hungry. Foods with high satiety values such as beef and eggs (high in protein) make us feel fuller for longer. Whereas carbohydrates such as chocolate or bread don’t often fill us up! They just make us want more…(as you sit reading this article, you may well be finishing the last piece of chocolate in the family size bar!) There is much research into high protein diets, which shows an increase in metabolism and decrease in hunger due to feeling full. (More so than high carb or fat diets.) But be aware as high protein diets do have their drawbacks (they have a high level of unhealthy saturated fats which can lead to risk of cardio vascular disease as well as the possible kidney problems that may arise. CALORIE TIP: I suggest you eat foods that contain a high Satiety Value, as to keep you feeling fuller for longer. Examples of good foods to eat; proteins with high Satiety Values (eggs, beef, boiled potatoes, mushrooms).

NUMBER 3 - THE GLYCEMIC INDEX (GI)

High GI foods can lead to more hunger and increased appetite. GI is a number associated with a particular type of food that tells us the effect it has on a person's blood sugar level. When we talk about the GI, we immediately turn to our old enemy, “Refined carbohydrates.” A refined carbohydrate is a sugar that has been modified in some way and doesn´t occur naturally. (A few examples are white bread, white potatoes, fruit juices or sugar.) . Refined carbohydrates have a high GI and are absorbed by our blood very quickly. This leads to a raise in our blood sugar levels. To restore this level our bodies release the hormone insulin, which then decreases our blood sugar levels. However, the effect is a rapid drop in blood sugar levels which can often create hunger and so we crave more food, or more carbs! This is one of the reasons why excess carbohydrates are seen as bad and low carbohydrate diets can often lead to significant weight loss.

CALORIE TIP: I suggest that you intake most of your carbohydrates from whole sources that contain fibre! (Fibre slows down the release of sugar into our blood stream!) Examples to eat; whole grain foods (whole grain bread or rice, oats, quinoa.).

IN SUMMARY

Hopefully the above gives you a something to think about the next time you count calories or grab something out of the fridge, a supermarket or at a restaurant…but remember, health is about balance and it is essential that we get the key macro and micro nutrients into our diets! Ensure you have a combination of protein, carbohydrates and fats (as well as vitamins and minerals) in our diets. Oh and don´t forget to exercise! Nutrition is only one part of living a healthy life!

HEALTH & FITNESS

A NEW ERA OF FITNESS

COMES TO MARBELLA Six time IFBB Mr. Olympia champion Dorian Yates is a tower of muscle and brawn. Meeting him in the flesh after checking out his amazing stature on Google was even more of an eye opener. We were fortunate enough to spend half an hour with the big guy to discuss among many things…. his measurements! (Dorian´s biceps were a whopping 19 inches at the peak of his career in case you were wondering.;) Dorian is also widely considered as one of the top athletes in modern bodybuilding history winning the coveted Mr Olympia title from 1992 -1997. Arnold Schwarzenegger and Ronnie Coleman pipped him with 7 and 8 title wins respectively. Now retired from competing, Dorian has used his fame and passion for fitness to set up a range of fitness supplements, mentor athletes and set up gyms. Luckily for us, his latest venture is in Marbella.

SO DORIAN WHAT MADE YOU DECIDE TO MOVE TO MARBELLA OF ALL THE OTHER LOCATIONS YOU COULD HAVE PICKED AROUND THE WORLD?

I started visiting here about 11 years ago and made a lot of friends here. We had a place here for about 3 years and then we just decided we wanted to stay here. My wife Gal is from Brazil so being a Spanish speaker it was a perfect and natural fit for us. We are both now residents.

HOW DID YOU COME TO LAUNCH DY GYM HERE?

I hadn´t planned to open a gym initially but when this building became available (underneath Centro Plaza) I spoke to Kimo my business partner and we sat down and both had similar ideas. We started off saying, let´s do a gym, let´s do a crossfit gym, let´s do a restaurant. The whole thing just got bigger and bigger until it grew into the project it is today.

WHAT SETS DY GYM APART FROM OTHER GYMS ON THE COAST?

DY Gym is a gym for people that are really serious about training. It´s not a health club with nice shiny floors, cosmetically looking nice but not

“I love Marbella, the environment, the weather, the people. I tell people all round the world it´s my most preferred place to live” actually doing anything. I have trained in gyms all over the world during my career and in my experience the best gyms and equipment come from America - it is way, way superior than anything else and all our weights equipment has been flown in from the best US suppliers.

| ISSUE 18 | ISSUE 18 80 MARBELLAROCKS 80 MARBELLAROCKS

WHO WILL BE YOUR MAIN CLIENTELE?

We can cater for everyone. Anyone can train here from a total beginner to someone who just wants to lose a bit of weight to a professional athlete – we have facilities for everyone and we want to see them train side by side.

WHAT IS THE ETHOS/PHILOSOPHY OF YOUR GYM?

My philosophy is to have a DY family: bringing positivity and helping people achieve their goals. When members come to the gym they are going to feel good and have a great workout. Somewhere everyone can go aside from being a gym, we want everyone to feel positive and great about themselves when they are here.

CAN YOU TELL US ABOUT THE DY GYM RESTAURANT?

Everything we serve at the restaurant will be health specialist and very top class. We will use only

HEALTH & FITNESS the finest ingredients and obviously protein high and low carb dishes feature heavily as well as your usual shakes, smoothies and juices.

ARE YOU PLANNING TO TAKE A HANDS ON APPROACH WITH DY GYM? Yes most definitely, I am not just a name on the door. We have people flying in from all round the world to train with me so I will be here a lot, so will Gal my wife who will also be coordinating classes and doing her own personal training and camps.

CAN YOU GIVE OUR READERS ANY TOP TRAINING TIPS?

I have some very unique methods involving high intensity training. I have a group flying in from China in a few weeks who I will put through their paces.

YOU COME FROM A SMALL TOWN IN BIRMINGHAM, CAN YOU TELL US WHAT MADE YOU DECIDE TO COMPETE IN PROFESSIONAL BODYBUILDING IN THE FIRST PLACE WHEN BACK IN THE 90´S IT WAS PRIMARILY RICH, PRETTY BOY, CALIFORNIA/VENICE BEACH TYPE PARTICIPANTS?

Yeah it was tough….most people that go to gyms and lift weights are working guys. However I was the first person to actually compete and win Mr Olympia that wasn´t of the typical Venice Beach stereotype. I wanted to break barriers, I was real and I wanted people to relate to that.

WHAT WAS IT LIKE COMPETING AGAINST THESE VENICE BEACH TYPE PARTICIPANTS, DID THEY WELCOME YOU? No, not really! In all sports there are many different titles but with bodybuilding there is only one revered title - Mr Olympia – so it is very, very competitive. It´s even more of a challenge coming from outside. Although definitely by the end of taking the sixth title I did manage to command respect from the other guys. It was hard but I got there.

DID ANY PARTICULAR MAJOR FACTOR IN YOUR LIFE SPUR YOU TO GET TO THIS LEVEL?

There was one thing. When I was 18 I was sent to a youth jail in England for a few months (over some minor offence) and there were

300 young guys so you kind of had to do weights in there. I had done a bit before but it was quite apparent quite quickly that I was stronger than everyone else in there. It got me attention and respect and made me think that this was something I could actually do to change my life.

LAST SUMMER YOU GAVE A VERY CANDID INTERVIEW WITH A BRITISH NEWSPAPER ABOUT DRUG TAKING WITHIN THE SPORTS INDUSTRY WHEREBY YOU RECOMMENDED ABOLISHING DRUG TESTS, DID YOU GET MUCH FLACK FOR THAT? Not really, I think people respected my honesty and they can´t really attack you for saying how you think.

DO YOU STILL STAND BY THOSE STATEMENTS? Yes I do.

DO YOU ENVISAGE DY GROWING INTO A GLOBAL BRAND?

We are definitely already a brand – we now have DY Gym, DY Nutrition, DY Clothing and DY Training Certification. Not sure about global brand yet, let´s wait and see!

DY Gym is located in Centro Plaza beneath Yanx. For more information on classes and memberships call +34 952 888 232 or visit www.dygymmarbella.com

MAÏ SUSHI restaurant review

I

n the heart of Puerto Banús is the exquisite Mai Sushi. The restaurant has everything you need to enjoy the most tastiest and freshest sushi whilst dining in a cosy and tranquil setting. Mai Sushi offers various options for Japanese food lovers from traditional sushi to rich,

84 MARBELLAROCKS | ISSUE 18

flavoursome Pad Thai noodles and rice dishes with an authentic taste which is hard to beat! Our tasters were greeted pleasantly by owner Salim on arrival and were kindly shown to their table. The menu was filled with various types of sushi from single pieces of ‘Shake Roll’ to ‘California Rainbow’ and platters of up to 60 pieces if you wish to share around the table with your party and take a sample of all the flavours. Many Japanese delicacies such as ‘Gunkan’ and ‘Chirashi’ were on offer if you’re feeling more adventurous! Our reviewers opted for the ‘Salmon Lovers’ 20 piece platter featuring four variations of

sushi, ‘Maki Salmon’, ‘Nigri Salmon’, ‘Philadelphia’ and ‘Sashmi Salmon.’ The platter was presented beautifully with each piece cut and rolled to perfection. The avocado was really fresh and the Philadelphia wrapped in salmon, delicious! Taking a step towards the starter side of the menu came options away from sushi such as ‘Tempura Shrimp’ and salads. Our tasters went for the succulent 6 piece spring rolls, which were placed on a bed of fresh salad, and the flavoursome chicken satay, which was cooked to high quality. The food just doesn’t stop there! The main course selections ranged from noodles, rice, ‘Yaki Tori’ all which come in different meat options and you have the option to order a mix of side dishes. Our tasters went for the Beef/Cheese ‘Yaki Tori’ which was presented perfectly on skewers and the Tuna ‘Tataki and Grill’ accompanied with boiled and lightly seasoned vegetables was indeed food gold!

gastronomy In order to compliment the sushi dishes, our tasters were recommended a crisp and fruity white wine called ‘Lui & Lui’ by the owner of the restaurant. This wine in particular was specially created for the purpose of enjoying a glass (or 4!) to accompany the sushi to perfection. The wine enhanced the seafood flavours and cut through the oiliness of the delicate spring rolls enjoyed as part of the main dish. The choice of desserts ranged from brownies to cheesecake and even a tiramisu. Our tasters opted for the strawberry flavoured panna cotta, which was light and sweet, perfectly presented on a narrow plate decorated with syrup. The light and fluffy base with a jelly-layered top was a melt-in-the-mouth treat and was a great palette cleanser after the many flavoursome dishes enjoyed for starter and main. The restaurants décor was dimly lit creating a romantic atmosphere for diners and also decorated on the walls were quotes which our tasters enjoyed reading whilst indulging in the quality 3 course meal. The service was friendly and attentive even by the owner of the restaurant; which made the dining experience that extra bit special.

What do you want? Sometimes, you may think you want something, but if it is just a fleeting idea, or something you think you should have, then there is not going to be much momentum to make it happen. When you think about what you want to create for yourself, try to imagine it as it viewing a movie; see it, listen to what it sounds like; try to create a vision with all of your senses. When you can perceive your goal in this way, you get a better picture of what you really want. Why do you want it? When you make changes in life, it can create resistance, so that even if you want something that will improve the quality of your life, it can feel easier to stay the same, in what is known, than to embrace the discomfort that comes with transformation. When you can assertively state what you want and why you want it, this will give you the power to blast through resistance! What will having it give you? When you put your focus on what you want in your life and how much better you will feel inside when you achieve it, this helps the process of liberation from where you are now, to arriving at where you want to be. What values does your goal support? When your goal supports your values (love, health, happiness, peace, acceptance, friendships, security etc), this gives you so much more power to strive for your objective. What has worked before to help you achieve this? Whether you are aiming for a goal you have tried to achieve before, or embarking on new territory, try to reflect on a similar situation in your past, where you managed to somehow achieve what you wanted; what happened, how did you win, what helped you? What could you try? First ask yourself this question and see what comes to you. Then, imagine that you are asking your friend this

psychology

question, and see what ideas you get for them. Finally, imagine you had no fear; now ask yourself, what could I try? How can you turn this into a positive habit? When you know what you want, why you want it, what having it will give you, and you have some idea about how to make it happen, you should be feeling fairly positive. Now, you are ready to create some positive habits to support your success. Make a schedule: Create a weekly schedule of all the things you have to do, or want to do, and make time for this objective too. It may require some sacrifices, but remember you are creating something you really want that supports values that are important to you. What can you let go of to make more time for what you want to create now?

what has been and what is, this makes inner peace, which builds a soft powerful inner core. This power centre will help you stay in alignment with what you most want, help soothe fears and anxieties around change to enable you to sustain the new positive habits you want to lead you to your important goal. What are you going to do? Decide now and make a commitment. How will you feel when you achieve this? List all the positive feelings that you can imagine experiencing.. What will help you win? Think of what you can do, and who you can ask to help to motivate, energise, support, empower and uplift you along the way.

Be pro-active - positive habits don’t just happen, you have to work at it with bold, brave action.

Keep your focus on the vision you want, you can make it real if you want it enough.

Create a positive mantra: It can go something like this: ‘I want ….because it will give me…..and this will make me feel…..and because it supports …….. (value name).

LEARN MORE

Watch the conflict: When you tell yourself positive statements to support what you want, be mindful that there may be conflicting thoughts or feelings that try to prevent you taking action. The best thing you can do is take immediate action on what you really want, and keep going; do not let your unsupportive habitual thinking and behaviour stand in the way of your success. Stay centred – when you speak to yourself and others with kindness, when you accept who you are,

If you would like to achieve your goals or explore how to attract the type of relationship you want, I offer individual coaching, available in person or with video Skype sessions: Tel: +34 620 741 316 Email: antonia@antoniabehan.com Web: www.antoniabehan.com Copyright © Antonia Behan 2015. Twitter is a great way for everyone to connect, from fans tweeting their celebrity icons to angry customers tweeting supermarkets it really is an open platform to say anything to anyone. We have scoured the web to find other incidents that led customers to complain about the funniest problems via Twitter. Kyle Williams went one step further and tweeted the police with his anger towards a £2 pasty he brought from the Shell garage deeming it as ‘disappointing’ (yes, really!) With no surprise the police didn’t respond…but the Shell garage did. They tweeted with humour but did offer a new pasty to make up for the issues it caused Kyle, see it goes to show saying something does make a difference just maybe next time don’t tweet the police(!)

Sadder Dre complained about his Domino´s Pizza not having any toppings. This time the customer wasn´t exactly right!

Immi Bugti tweeted Argos asking for more PS4’s and to complain about a worker, but his use of street slang went down well with the Argos team who tweeted back in the same style (lol)

October Jones tweeted Sainsbury’s a bizarre opinion that she felt her sandwich was beaten to death by Hulk Hogan, they took her sense of humour and owned it like a pro (wrestler).

Liverpool stars Mario Balotelli and Dejan Lovren were on the first class train to London to play a semi-final and Lovren posted a picture of themselves on social media but one user wasn’t happy. Josh tweeted Virgin Trains to complain that passengers have their feet on the seats, of course Virgin Trains responded in a polite way but once Josh showed the picture they caught on and played Josh at his own game!

MARCH

ASTROLOGY FORECAST 2016 Aries

Gemini

Leo

21 MAR – 20 APR The universe gives you a ‘heads up’ this month and you are advised to heed your intuition especially when it comes to others. If you get that niggling feeling something just isn’t ‘right’ pay attention and don’t wait to find out you’re right the hard way. The past - especially past loves feature and provided you are not indulging in ‘The way we were’ type fantasies, a past relationship or just something you loved to do could become newly relevant. Just ensure you examine it with the experienced eye of today rather than the rose-tinted glasses of yesterday. Returning to places you have visited in the past is also likely now and if so they will seem new to you on some level. What actions you set in motion previously now pay off - or you now know what needs to be discarded to begin anew.

22 MAY – 21 JUNE Career matters enter a key stage this month and it’s time to push forward with those ladder-ascending plans whether these involve a new position or just recognition in your current one. This is the area where you will get the most results this month. As far as romance goes, you are ready for something hot, intense and passionate but longevity may not be part of this. However, sometimes one wants to sit down to a four course meal and other times that fast food is just as satisfying! It all depends on your appetite in the moment! If coupled up you may find too much togetherness stifling and want to be out and about doing your own thing. That’s not to say you have a wandering eye - in fact all you may be seeking is soul exploration time. However, if you seek validation that you are still hot - you should receive that - whether it is at work or play.

24 JULY – 23 AUG Shed something that has been holding you back and free yourself of negative influences this month as money, romance and frontof-house career opportunities send your soaring! It’s not your problem if others cannot keep up and it does neither you nor them any good if you allow yourself to be held back. Setting an example by spreading your own wings may inspire others to do the same. News around work, business ventures, study or the written word could herald a watershed moment with your career where you arrive at a crossroads. You can head towards success but the journey may involve heading out into previously unexplored territory, or you can stick to the familiar path. Which one is it going to be? The fact is, you’ve only stuck a toe into the sea of possibilities when it comes to showcasing all you can be. Why not take a deep breath this March and then take the plunge?

Taurus

Cancer

Virgo

21 APR – 20 MAY Spring has sprung and it’s a month to be out and about, socialising and getting yourself noticed. This applies both on a personal and a professional level. New and unusual friends and experiences could even open doors for you so if you receive an invitation that takes you outside your usual group or social circle, don’t say no! The fact is that what you are seeking to achieve can come to you now in unexpected ways and via those you know. Singles take note as this is a month where you can stand out and in order to meet someone, you do actually have to get out there and be seen - even if this just extends to posting a dating profile online. This month have the belief that your people are just waiting out there to connect and all you have to do is make a small effort to find them. Take a step and voila! There’s that connection you were seeking.

22 JUNE – 23 JULY A little known fact is that while your sign is normally associated with home, family and security, in ancient times it was also the sign of the explorer along with Sagittarius. This month you are once more in explorer mode as the planets push you out of your comfort zone to where the magic is waiting for you. Get ready to expand your world on some level and broaden your horizons. Some of you may be travelling while others explore learning, dealing with the media or even jumping into that wild, romantic adventure. This is a month to let go of your usual expectations and either replace them with bigger goals or else just sign on for the ultimate adventure and be open to what the universe wants to send. No matter what you can dream up for yourself, the universe can always go one better. Don’t limit your experiences by being blinkered to where new ones could take you. Embrace the spirit of exploration in love - and other areas.

24 AUG – SEPT 3 Time to love it up this month, Virgo. Your long-term love and partnership sector receives a welcome boost plus a sprinkle of stardust. In fact, those stars are not just in your eyes but could well be reflected back at you in the eyes of another. Existing unions return to those heady days of first passion while potential ones sparkle with mutual attraction on both a mental and a physical level which you know only too well, is a must for you! What occurs now could leave you breathless and wanting more and the good news is that more could just be forthcoming! All kinds of joint ventures are favoured now - whether it’s a romantic twosome, holidaying with a close friend or a joint business venture. Whatever it is you want to achieve now, you can attract exactly the right dance partner. This month just wants to show you that it not only takes two baby, but you double your fun and success in the process!

Libra

Sagittarius

Aquarius

24 SEPT – 23 OCT For the first three weeks of this month work matters are in sharp focus and you may feel that your ‘must do’ list is endless. Don’t lose your focus however and remember that every job - no matter how ‘glamourous’ it may appear to be, has its mundane aspects. As you tick yet another completed task off that list, hold fast to the knowledge that by the start of the third week you will be freed from the everyday drudgery and focused on your favourite Libran pastime - love and romance. Destiny now takes a hand - or forces someone elses and you have an encounter that can only be called ‘fated’ or else suddenly that person you’ve been holding out hope for turns round and shares their feelings. Others could experience a career or creative venture breakthrough and see themselves differently as a result. It’s all about timing and the universe says - the time is now.

23 NOV – 21 DEC If any sign is in ‘Just do it’ mode this month, it’s you Sag! You have something or someone in your sights and you are going to allow nothing to stand between you and it. It’s a time to think and act boldly and to be unafraid to be clear about whatever it is you want and expect. Things may slow down by the end of the month - most likely because you have now achieved that personal goal you have been striving for. If however, doors are remaining closed to you - no matter how long and loud you knock, or you are just not getting the results you hoped for despite all your efforts, there is a deeper message here and that is to stop and knock on a different door. Seeing how your choices influence your results is one of the gifts that are headed your way in March and often this is all we need in order to adjust our success rate accordingly.

21 JAN – 19 FEB Financial negotiations feature as does anything to do with your salary, maintenance payments, benefits, joint accounts or assets you share with someone else. You could end up with someone leaving you something - either in the form of you receiving a legacy or else with someone leaving your life and leaving behind anything from a book to a piano! This could leave you feeling this is oh-so-karmic but don’t necessarily think that because they have left something behind, they are going to return as this may not be the case. Whatever they have left is now yours no matter what. Whatever falls into your possession now this month should see your bank account increase as a result with perhaps gains coming from a totally unexpected quarter. The roulette wheel of life could just be spinning in your direction this month. Ka-ching!

Scorpio

Capricorn

Pisces

24 OCT – 22 NOV Push forward with money making opportunities or getting your financial house in order for the first few weeks of March. As the weeks progress you are going to find that extra cash harder to come by so now is the time to pursue that better paying job or alternative income source. If you have been asking ‘should I stay or should I go?’ when it comes to a connection, the answer to that should be forthcoming now and please follow through with whichever one it turns out to be. You’re either in 100% or out. Ambivalence is not a decision. If you hesitate then you are going to stall a process that just wants to deliver you something better whether it’s in the realm of romance or recognition in a business sense. Hanging on means there is no room for the new. You of all signs know when you should have the best that there is out there. If you don’t already think that, then you have your answer. You know what you deserve.

22 DEC – 20 JAN You are in psychic detective mode this month Capricorn - and determined to get to the bottom of things. That mission includes uncovering the facts and quite possibly questioning everything. You need to do this now and if signing important documents or contracts, please read the small print and if you are uncertain, get a professional opinion. I am not saying you will be misled but this is one of those times when someone may just try to pull the wool over your eyes. Certainly, if someone comes to you with a tall tale you should take it with a pinch of salt until the facts can be verified. If someone has been misleading you now they will be exposed and it is also important you keep everything above board too. It’s a very karmic month for you now and debts will come due or be repaid. Past loves or people who owe you something from the past could feature. The truth about all connections is revealed now.

20 FEB – 20 MAR Love could get locked down for the long haul. You radiate a special kind of attraction and your ability to come up with creative solutions hits an all-time high, Pisces. Work that magic and look to what enters your world as it is going to be based solely on what you are putting out there in turn. So, if you radiate you will attract back in kind. If you are a glass half-full person then the glass may now overflow. However, that glass may end up empty if you persist in dwelling on negative outcomes. I’m not saying the planets are acting as your Fairy Godmother right now and even those who appear to be on a roll may have to deal with some challenges. But it’s all down to how you approach these. Knowing you have the skills to deal with them and emerge is all it takes - as does knowing that the next good thing is just around the corner. If that’s your belief, that’s what you’ll find. Whether you think you can this month, or whether you think you can’t - you’re right.

Stacey has lived in Marbella most of his life and has been resident DJ at Aqwa Mist for 4 years. Not only does he spin the best tunes in Marbella he also produces them with partners Vital Emotion. Stacey has just been signed as the resident DJ for Nikki Beach Ibiza. If you’re over there this summer be sure to pay him a visit.

HOW DID YOU COME ABOUT GETTING RESIDENCY AT NIKKI BEACH? I just got a call from the Director to have a meeting then it just went from there. I have been wanting to DJ at Nikki Beach for a while now but I always worked nights so it’s great to be working days. ARE YOU LOOKING FORWARD TO YOUR SUMMER ON THE ISLAND? Yeah big year, really excited for DJing in some of the other clubs over there as well as Nikki Beach. WILL YOU MISS MARBELLA? I’ve been on the coast for 25 years now so I think its time for a change of scenery. YOU HAVE RECENTLY SIGNED TO THE FAMOUS ROK SOLID ENTERTAINMENT IN LONDON, WHAT ARE THEIR PLANS FOR YOU? We have been working hard on some tracks over the winter so I’m looking forward to playing them over in Ibiza to see how the crowd react. We have the function 1 system so can’t wait to run them through there. DO YOU HAVE PLANS FOR AN ALBUM LAUNCH? It takes too long, so I’d rather produce 1 track a month. It makes it more interesting for me and a better work flow!

YOU HAVE RECENTLY STARTED TEACHING DJING AT MARBELLA EVENT ACADEMY – DO YOU HAVE ANY STAR PUPILS? Yeah little Kevin - 9 years old smashing it in 3 lessons. I go straight to the point so they can literally come in and start beat matching. It´s all about practice and preparatives. Any DJ reading this will agree on how long we spend preparing and searching… DJing is the easy part!! Especially if you’re a sync whippet like Christian from Norway! DOES IT FEEL GOOD TO GIVE BACK? Yes I love teaching! I was taught by Alex Gomez Miguel Picasso Doneyck how to produce and be a better DJ. You’re never to old to learn and never to young to teach! I have performed alongside the best artists in the world from 50 Cent to Pharell Williams, Neyo, Chris Brown and Jason Derulo. I have learnt quite a lot with these artists so in the end giving back to these students makes the experience all worthwhile. IF YOU HAD TO TAKE THREE THINGS TO A DESERT ISLAND, WHAT WOULD THEY BE? Laptop, sunscreen and a blow up doll..haha! WHAT ALL THE GIRLS WANT TO KNOW, ARE YOU SINGLE? I am, but music first - love can wait.

114 MARBELLAROCKS | ISSUE 18

WHAT DO YOU LOOK FOR IN A GIRL? Brains and a good heart. MOST FANCIED CELEBRITY? Jennifer Aniston. IDEAL DINNER PARTY GUEST? Mark Wahlberg. GREATEST ACHIEVEMENT? Never losing a crowd. BEST ADVICE EVER GIVEN? Listen to your elders. IF YOU WERE AN ANIMAL WHAT WOULD YOU BE? A shark. MOST EMBARRASSING MOMENT? Music cutting off at the club! Faulty Equipment!! CRAZIEST THING YOU´VE EVER DONE? I have lost count, way too many crazy moments. WHAT DID YOU WANT TO BE GROWING UP? A musician. FRIDAY NIGHT OUT OR SUNDAY DAY IN? Sunday day snuggling beats any party!
