EDITOR’S NOTE W

elcome to the April Issue of Marbella Rocks. This month we explore the latest glitter trends taking over the catwalks in Glitterbug. For the guys we have reportage direct from the Geneva Motor Show 2018 where all the car makers reveal their latest models. Our firm favourite is the BMW M8 Gran Coupe, turn to page 24 to find out yours. Who could have missed ‘Eastenders’ star Elaine Lordan’s shocking drunk photos at 11am and you’d have to be living under a rock not to know Ant McPartlin has relapsed after a drink driving three car smash up. Which brings me nicely onto our cover feature, ‘I’m a Celebrity… Get me into Rehab’ detailing the pitfalls of celebs struggling to cope with the fame game. There is a positive note aside though – recovered celebs tell their tales of their road to recovery. We hope it inspires you. Our front cover star Alicia Keys is well worthy of her cover star status - 15 Grammys, a career spanning three decades and a lucrative TV career. Not to mention she has set up her own charity, dabbled in philanthropy and has written a New York Times best seller. How does she find the time? Well she doesn’t wear make-up for a start. Read page 38 to find out Alicia’s fascinating full story. We also have two photoshoots, the first from Boho B, purveyors of boho chic beachwear shot here in Marbella with model Ana Santos. Simply stunning. Next up is Atelier E showcasing the latest K Design fashion – from daywear loungewear to evening wear – your Spring/Summer wardrobe is covered. Plus, you’ll be pleased to hear two new TV channels are being launched by our parent company Rocks Mag this month. Kidz Rock will be presented by an endearing range of budding young journalists who will review the latest toys, gadgets, tech, video games, outdoor and urban pursuits. While Rocks Mag TV will feature cutting edge news and editorial; interviewing celebrities, DJ’s and attending the best parties with behind the scenes reportage in London, Dubai and Marbella. Til next time, Sam

GIGI & ZAYN CALL IT A DAY Model Gigi Hagid and singer Zayn Malik have called time on their 2 year relationship. While the couple have remained tight lipped on the reason for the ‘amicable separation’ a friend of Gigi’s spilt the beans to Closer Magazine. “Zayn was always more introverted than socialite Gigi, who had a wide circle of friends and loved being out on the showbiz scene. He didn’t get on that well with her showbiz friends and that become a bone of contention.” “Zayn was the one to end things following a string of heated rows, leaving her heartbroken even though she knew, deep down, it was the right decision", they added. A source at The Sun newspaper reported something similar, commenting, "They are no longer a couple but they do remain close and are supportive of each other. The reality is that

they’ve grown apart, having been together for a long time. They both have crazy work schedules that would put pressure on any relationship.” The pair dated for two years and announced their split on Twitter with two personal statements. Former One Direction star Zayn said he had a “huge amount of respect and adoration for Gigi", while Gigi spoke of how she wants "nothing but the best for Zayn and will continue to support him as a friend that she has immense respect and love for." Little Mix fans were delighted by the news, seeing as though just over two years ago Zayn famously dumped then fiancé Perry Edwards by text - after dating for 4 years – taking up with model and socialite Gigi very shortly after. #Karmaisabitch is trending on social media this month.

KRIS JENNER’S BROOD GETS EVEN BIGGER Kardashian matriarch Kris Jenner, 62, is said to be adopting a son with her 37-year-old boyfriend Corey Gamble. Kris, who is already mother to Kourtney, Khloe, Kim, Kendall, Kylie and Rob – as well as a grandmother to a further 8 little Kardashians has been broody for some time now and wanted her younger beau to experience the joys of fatherhood. A source said, "Kris has been desperate for another child ever since her eldest daughter, Kourtney, gave birth to her first grandchild, Mason, eight years ago. Seeing so many of her own offspring have children has made her broody to have another.” Corey has reportedly fallen in love with a five-year-old boy from an orphanage on the outskirts of LA and the paperwork is being processed. The new addition to the booming Kardashian clan could arrive as early as May.

STORMZY DRUG PARAPHERNALIA Stormzy is known for his legendary house parties, although this one took a turn for the worse when drug paraphernalia was pictured on his Instagram feed. The artist is seen playing poker with friends, while on the table there appears to be a few small plastic bags containing white and green substances. Stormzy says "Wow, wow, woah” in his distinctive voice as the camera pans across the table, with the word "DON’T" captioned across the clip. Although the video in question has since been deleted, the damage has already been done with pictures leaked all over media outlets calling into question the reputation of the UK hitmaker. His reps have responded with the statement: "Stormzy does not take, has never taken, and does not associate himself with or in any way promote or condone, class A drugs." OK glad you cleared that up.

NEWS DEC BABY JOY The tiny (and sober) half of Britain’s most beloved TV duo, Declan Donnelly, has announced he and his wife Ali Astall are expecting their first child together. Ali, 40, who has known Dec for 10 years but wed in 2015, fell pregnant shortly after Dec, 42, wrapped up in the jungle following the last ‘I’m a Celebrity’ series in December. The pair cautiously waited until the 12

week mark to reveal their news to the world. “They have always wanted a family and were worried it might not happen to them,” a source close to the pair said. “They are over the moon.” Meanwhile following his relapse and drink driving charge on March 15, Ant has checked into rehab and ITV bosses have said their popular ‘Saturday Night Takeaway’ show will finish its run without Ant.

CELEBS MARCH ON A whole host of celebrities are supporting the March For Our Lives rally for imposing stricter gun laws including Justin Timberlake, Miley Cyrus, Demi Lovato, Jennifer Hudson, Cher, Sir Paul McCartney, Charlize Theron, George Clooney, Kim Kardashian and Kanye West. As people from all over the world gathered for the rally organised by the students of the Florida high school massacre, celebrities have also come together to express their support for the worldwide movement. Kardashian tweeted, "So ready to March today! Landed in DC w North & Kanye. We stand in solidarity with the survivors of gun violence & students who are calling for action on common sense gun safety laws at #MarchForOurLives around the country."

While the day was focused on the youth with many poignant accounts from child survivors who lost their friends, Sir Paul McCartney stood in solidarity with marchers in New York’s Central Park and referred to John Lennon’s fatal shooting outside his apartment building in 1980. “One of my best friends was killed by gun violence right around here, so it’s important to me not just to march today but to take action tomorrow and to have these people to have their voices heard.” The movement is gaining traction around the world with 800 separate marches planned. Trump remained silent as the marches occurred in the US capital, Washington DC, on March 24.

CELEBS SHUT UP SHOPS Former ‘Made in Chelsea’ star Millie Mackintosh has closed her fashion label amid the looming “financial crisis.” The 28-year-old started the business four years ago and as well as having her own website, her clothes were sold on ASOS. With 1.3m Instagram followers Millie regularly used her social media platform to showcase collections. However, even some fans were quick to point out that Millie’s designs were priced too high at €350 a pop compared to other retailers on ASOS who priced similar designs at €80. Millie thanked everyone who's been involved, saying she's been “incredibly fortunate" to be able to create her own

fashion business. Meanwhile Victoria Beckham’s sister has closed her own affordable fashion boutique Hidden Closet in Hertfordshire. Louise said she closed down the business as she is “too busy with her four children” and struggled to find a third party to take over running the shop. While older sister Victoria's label, where prices tip €3000 for a dress, won Brand of the Year at the British Fashion Awards, Louise's brand has now closed completely. The Hidden Closet Facebook page is now urging customers to “use vouchers and credit notes ASAP.”

GMS2018

Wow, what a spectacular year it was at the 2018 Geneva Motor Show. The highlight of the motoring calendar took place between March 8-18 where carmakers unveiled their latest models to the eagerly awaiting public at the world famous Swiss convention centre. There were so many standout cars this year from the latest EV’s to hybrids and supercars, it was a mission compiling the shortlist of only 5. But here we go…

BMW M8 GRAN COUPE The M8 will be the fastest car ever made by BMW and although only a concept car at this stage it is likely to adopt the same engine as the M5, a 4.4-litre V8 twin turbo with a 592bhp. This four-door coupe is made from carbon fibre, including on the roof, to keep the weight down. The production version will arrive in 2019 and is expected to cost over €100,000.

RIMAC CONCEPT 2 New Kid on the Block Rimac has unveiled the Concept Two, a carbon fibre hypercar with a huge 1,914 horsepower. That's about 500 more than pundits were expecting and 400 more than a Bugatti Veyron. This powerful EV will accelerate to 60 mph in 1.85 seconds and reach a staggering top speed of 258 mph.

BULLITT FORD MUSTANG If it’s good enough for Steve McQueen it’s good enough for us. Fifty years on from McQueen’s 1968 hit movie ‘Bullitt’, a special edition Mustang will be available later this year, pushing 457bhp from a 5.0-litre V8 engine. Price points have yet to be unveiled but expect it to be around the modest €45,000 mark.

FERRARI PISTA Following the Stradales, Speciales and Scuderias, the new Ferrari Pista manages to score 710bhp from the familiar turbocharged V8 for an unbelievable 2.9 second 0-62mph time. The chassis has been given a makeover too, promising that the Pista will deliver thrills in the curves as well as impressive thrust on the straights.

The I-Pace is the most immediate challenge to Tesla’s dominance of the EV market, matching up well with Tesla’s SUV, the Model X 75D. It has similar range and acceleration, though the Model X is bigger and has more seats and storage. The I-Pace is available from the second half of the year priced at €69,500 so cheaper than Tesla. Jaguar is definitely the EV car manufacturer to watch after Tesla.

MARBELLA ROCKS TOP 3 GLITTER PICKS

GLITTERBUG Are you ready to catch the Glitterbug? As this is one trend that is definitely not going away… If you thought the Spring/Summer 2018 glitter trend was flash in the pan, think again. MUA Tom Pecheux for Chanel sent models down the Fall runways wearing iridescent gold on their cheekbones. If you are feeling like going ‘way out’ take a leaf out of Vogue beauty editor Val Garland who created shimmering foreheads for Preen or go one step further with a full face of glitter like make-up artists at Giambattista Valli. At Oscar de la Renta’s Fall 2018 show, purple glitter eyeshadow was applied to the centre of the eyelids and on the lower lash line. Meanwhile, models at the Kate Spade show were given Swarovski crystal-embellished lids for that extra Wow factor. Thanks to a whole host of cosmetic brands including Beauty Blvd, Barry M and Ciaté, embracing the playful look is made easy no matter what your skill set.

Ciaté London Glitter Flip Lipstick - €18 If you need a quick way to create glitter lips, try this one-step product from Ciaté. The fully pigmented formula applies like a regular lipstick, however, it transforms into an extreme glitter finish when the lips are pressed together. The cosmetics brand has recently added six new colours to the range.

Bleach London’s Glitterati Palette - €38 Many glitter eyeshadows lack staying power. Yet we have found a brand new one on the market -Bleach London’s Glitterati Palette - a selection of glitter-packed adhering shadows in nine versatile hues. This seriously won’t budge, withstanding heat and water splashes so you can be pool party ready this Summer.

26 MARBELLAROCKS | ISSUE 39

Barry M Fine Glitter Dust - €4 The glitter trend transcends make-up with nails following suit. The best way to add glitter to nails instead of buying a whole new set of varnishes is to sprinkle a coat of fine glitter (stay clear of heavy duty ones) to nails as they are drying. Voila! Instant glitter nails in all your favourite colours.

RECIPE EASTER LAMB - BRUSHED WITH MASHED-UP GARLICKY MINT This delicious recipe from celebrity chef Jamie Oliver with notes of garlic, mint and fennel is a great twist on a classic roast lamb recipe. Dare to be different this Easter and have all your guests singing your praises.

INGREDIENTS (Serves 6)

• 1 quality leg of lamb, about 2kg • Sea salt • Freshly ground black pepper • 1 large bunch fresh mint leaves, picked • 1 clove garlic, peeled • 125ml olive oil • 250ml organic chicken stock • 600g new potatoes, sliced thickly • 100g baby fennel, trimmed and cut in half lengthways • 225g baby carrots, tops trimmed • 100g baby leeks, trimmed • 200g courgettes, sliced lengthways • 250g fine or yellow beans, trimmed • 150g asparagus, trimmed to 6cm lengths

and mortar, or in a food processor, pound or blend the mint leaves with the garlic and seasoning until smooth. Slowly add the olive oil to your mixture then brush all over the lamb. Roast in the oven for 1½ hours, brushing with the seasoned oil regularly until the lamb is cooked. 3. While the meat is resting, remove the fat from the roasting tin. Add the stock to the tin and make a light, tasty broth by boiling and dissolving all the goodness at the bottom. 4. Cook the potatoes in a large pan of boiling, salted water for 5 minutes. Add the fennel and carrots and cook for a further 5 minutes. Then add the rest of the vegetables and simmer for another 5 minutes. 5. Carve your lamb then serve the vegetables in a shallow bowl with the lamb on top and a little broth and mint oil drizzled over.

METHOD 1. Preheat the oven to 220°C/425°F/gas 7. 2. Score the lamb all over and season. Using a pestle

WINE MATCH When it comes to thinking about what wine goes with Lamb there is one golden rule to follow… always pick red. White and rose wine can rarely do justice to the rich and delicious flavours of lamb, so a red wine should be your choice for your wine pairing with lamb. The main exceptions are some Indian or Greek-style dishes which can have a strong lemon component as well as yoghurt or feta and mint. In these cases, stronger dry rosés are a good option. Almost all red wines will enhance the flavours of a beautiful lamb dish, but some go with certain dishes more than others. Lamb has a natural affinity with two grapes – Cabernet Sauvignon (a good Bordeaux will work here) and Tempranillo. A Spanish oak-aged Rioja also goes particularly well with garlic and mint. If you prefer a more delectable, perfumed wine modern labels from New Zealand or Chile are fantastic but are a little on the pricey side. However, Easter is surely a time for a treat so indulge. Salut!

NEWS MOVIE REVIEW

AVENGERS: INFINITY WAR The next instalment of The Avengers starring Robert Downey Jr, Chris Hemsworth and Scarlett Johannsson is set to be a blockbuster hit for Marvel Studios. The plot line of this latest outing sees The Avengers and their super hero pals sacrificing all in an attempt to defeat their powerful arch enemy Thanos before his blitz of devastation and ruin puts an end to the universe. On a mission to collect all six Infinity Stones, Thanos plans to use the artifacts to inflict his twisted will on reality. The fate of the planet and existence itself has never been more uncertain as everything the Avengers have fought for has led up to this moment. After an intervention from Robert Downey Jr, Marvel has now announced the global release of Avengers: Infinity War on 27th April, a week earlier than expected. The surprise decision brings the international release date (previously 4th May) into line with the UK release date. Expect this film to be a smash hit for kids and comic book loving adults alike – Dwayne Johnson’s Th Rampage was so scared by the earlier release date that his blockbuster film was moved forward to April 13th so as to give viewers a chance to watch this over the powerful Avengers outing.

ALBUM REVIEW

JASON DERULO 777 Jason Derulo, the RnB impresario who regularly performs in Marbella nightclub Mirage, is back with his fifth studio album by Warner Bros. The long awaited album is tipped to be Derulo’s best with a mix of upbeat dance tracks and thought provoking ballads including the best track he said he has ever written called, “Point of View.” Jason, recently billed as the most played male artist on the radio today, said of the new album: “I always try to create an album that's a bit of a rollercoaster ride so you don't get bored, because those are my favourite kinds of albums. “With this album, I do dive in more emotionally, a little more vulnerable—actually, a lot more vulnerable. There's the party songs, of course, but there are very mature, emotional sides of the album that I don't think have really been touched on from me.” 777 will be released on 13th April. If you want to be the first to get your hands on it pre-order from iTunes today. Derulo will commence his 777 World Tour in June – be sure to catch him on Marbella shores this Summer. He is a real crowd pleaser and will not disappoint.

Q: Can you recommend a route to do that has the most beautiful scenery?

ALICIA KEYS Alicia Keys is a definitive powerhouse in the music industry with a career spanning three decades and a staggering 15 Grammy Awards under her belt.

The New York born star is also a songwriter, a producer, an accomplished actress, a Times bestselling author, an entrepreneur and a powerful force in the global fight against HIV and Aids. And she manages to juggle all this whilst being a wife to producer husband Swiss Beatz and mother of two adorable boys, Egypt and Genesis, aged 7 and 3. 38 MARBELLAROCKS | ISSUE 39

MAKE-UP FREE However, Keys is awarded her cover star status by the work she does to promote self-esteem among women. The star has shunned wearing make-up despite performing at concerts, appearing in magazine photoshoots and on live TV wearing minimal to no makeup, something which is undisputedly a bold stance for a woman on a very public platform where women are intensely scrutinised over their appearance. Our April cover shot is also make-up free and has not been photoshopped. Practically unheard of in this day and age of camera trickery, lighting and advancements of modern day photoshop techniques. Explaining her decision, Keys said she was tired of the “constant judgement of women” and stressed how her decision was a personal one and unique to her own experiences and development. She does not condemn make-up as a whole (or the women that wear it) but states that she would never so much as pick up a tube of mascara ever again. As a result her skin is crystal clear and it has that infamous 'glow' that we always hear about, but never see on our complexions!

MUSICAL PRODIGY Alicia first burst onto the music scene in 1997 aged only 16 when she penned and sung the track ‘Dah Dee Dah’ for the Will Smith film ‘Men in Black.’ Keys was favoured by studio execs who instantly recognised both her singing and song writing talent and took her under their wing. She wrote all the tracks and released her debut album ‘Songs in A Minor’ in 2001 instantly catapulting the 20-year-old to fame. The album sold over 12 million copies worldwide and netted her 5 of her 15 Grammy Awards. Single ‘Fallin’ was number one spot on the Billboard Hot 100 for 6 weeks. Her second album ‘The Diary of Alicia Keys’ was yet another overnight success, garnering her another 4 Grammy Awards in 2005. Proving to be a vocal powerhouse (and not all singers do) she released her first live album ‘Unplugged’ making her the first ever woman to have an MTV Unplugged album at Number One. Alicia has endured ongoing success with ‘As I Am’ released in 2007, ‘The Element of Freedom’ where she collaborated with Jay-Z on track “Empire State of Mind” in 2009 and ‘Girl On Fire’ in 2012. Keys had a break from singing to spend time raising her young family. In 2016 Alicia released her powerful and critically acclaimed new sixth studio album ‘Here’ on Sony’s RCA Records. Unlike other albums it offered an honest glimpse into what matters most to Keys, the artist shined a light on the sonic soulfulness and stories from New York, the city that raised her (she was born in Hell’s Kitchen). As an accompanying visual story to ‘Here’, Keys also released a short-film entitled ‘The Gospel’ inspired by her many songs showing she could turn her hand to acting and producing.

TV CAREER Alicia is now in her third stint as a coach on ‘The Voice US’ and is proving to be a fierce competitor this year. She put together a far stronger team than the other three mentors (rookie Kelly Clarkson and veterans Adam Levine and Blake Shelton). The 12 artists that she brought into the battle round earned a whopping 29 chair turns during the blind auditions. Alicia also won season 12 of ‘The Voice’ in 2017 when she mentored RnB and soul singer Chris Blue. In her first stint as a coach during Season 11, replacing ‘Dirty’ singer Christina Aguilera, her artist We McDonald managed to finish third behind the winner Sundance Head from Team Blake Shelton and Adam Levine’s runner-up Billy Gilman. Alicia made her directorial debut for Lifetime’s Five and most recently served as Executive Producer of the critically-acclaimed film ‘The Inevitable Defeat of Mister & Pete’. In 2011, she made her acting debut with Lydia R. Diamond’s play ‘Stick Fly for the Cort Theater’, which Keys also composed the original music for. As we were going to print it was announced that Alicia is developing a biopic of iconic choreographer Alvin Ailey with the support of the Ailey Organization. She is producing with Susan Lewis through her AK Worldwide production company and is set for release early next year.

I’M A CELEBRITY… GET ME INTO REHAB Social media has gone into overdrive this month with the news that Ant McPartlin has suffered yet another relapse and has been checked into rehab following a bad drink drive accident. Ant, one half of Britain’s most beloved TV duo, was involved in a three car smash up in West London on March 15 with a young child taken to hospital with her injuries. McPartlin, who was reportedly “well over” the drink drive limit attended Kingston police station and was interviewed before being charged. The presenter will appear at Wimbledon Magistrates' Court on April 4. Ant McPartlin's extreme drinking was driven by guilt over the marriage split from teenage sweetheart and wife of 10 years Lisa Armstrong. “He is not handling the end of his marriage well”, say friends. Meanwhile TV bosses are continuing with their popular TV show ‘Saturday Night Takeaway’ without Ant and ‘his brother from another mother’ Dec will continue solo or with a co presenter. The duo have also been dropped as sponsors of Suzuki following the crash, losing the pair a cool €26 million contract.

ANT IN CRISIS AFTER CRASH

ELAINE 2002

ELAINE NOW

And then who could have missed the tragic pictures of ‘EastEnders’ actress Elaine Lordan looking gaunt and a shadow of her former self - swigging from miniature bottles of wine in the street before midday. The troubled star, aged 51, who played Lynne Slater in the popular soap was allegedly fired by BBC producers for her alcoholism back in 2003. After a few attempts to get sober and a brief stint on ‘I’m A Celebrity… Get Me Out Of Here’ (she was airlifted out of the jungle after 2 days), Elaine checked herself in and out of rehab with her addiction spiralling out of control. The shocking pictures below show the devastating effects of alcoholism. As she walked through the streets of London on her way to the nearest off licence at 11.40am (yes, 11.40 in the morning) she was unsteady on her feet and had to be helped up by a pal. Elaine was 31 when she joined the Albert Square cast members. She was originally a fitness instructor before landing the role as the eldest Slater sister. While friends and family thought the role was the making of her she struggled to cope with the attention fame brought and what started as a few drinks extra turned into a crippling addiction.

CARRIE FISHER Aside from her fame as Princess Leia in 'Star Wars', Carrie Fisher was also well-known for her public statements about her health and addictions. In 2008 she even published a book about her struggles, called ‘Wishful Drinking’. She wrote “Happy is one of the many things I'm likely to be over the course of a day and certainly over the course of a lifetime. But I think if you have the expectation that you're going to be happy throughout your life, more to the point, if you have a need to be comfortable all the time, well, among other things, you have the makings of a classic drug addict or alcoholic.” Indeed, alcohol is often used as a coping mechanism, and Fisher describes — in her usual humorous fashion how drinking can make this worse. Tragically, Fisher died of a heart attack in December 2016. It is thought that a relapse was partially to blame. Fans continue to mourn the loss of the actress.

DEMI LOVATo She went from “Barney and Friends” to pop star, but along the way she dealt with mental health struggles that led her to self-medicate herself into devastating addictions to drugs and alcohol. There was a time, she admitted in an interview, when she couldn’t make it 30 minutes without cocaine and would smuggle it with her on airplanes. With hard-earned sobriety now in place, she’s a vocal spokesperson for mental health and addiction treatment causes. “I had a Sprite bottle filled with vodka and it was just nine in the morning and I was throwing up in the car and this was just to get on a plane to go back to LA to the sober living house that I was staying at. … I had all the help in the world, but I didn’t want it. When I hit that moment I was like, it’s no longer fun when you’re doing it alone.”

BILLY JOEL Famous rock musician Billy Joel has admitted to struggling with alcohol abuse during most of his adult life. Drinking has, apparently, gotten in the way of his career and personal relationships. Fellow musician (and frequent touring partner) Elton John begged Joel to get treatment for alcoholism. In an early 2011 issue of Rolling Stone, John is quoted as saying that Joel needed to check into “tough” rehab, and that alcoholism was getting in the way of his life and career. In a 2013 interview Joel mused about his past drinking habits: “I don’t know why I drank so much I don’t subscribe to AA, I don’t subscribe to 12-step stuff. Sometimes I just overdid it … but it wasn’t consistent, it would be periods of time, during a divorce or something.” Even if the drinking wasn’t consistent, the binge-drinking Joel describes here is another form of alcohol addiction.

DANIEL RADCLIFFE BRADLEY COOPER Bradley is known for his comedic film roles. But like most of us, Cooper’s life has had its ups and downs. He is recovering from alcoholism and has been sober for over a decade. In 2015 he described how alcohol affected virtually everything in his life, “I wouldn’t have been able to have access to myself or other people, or even been able to take in other people, if I hadn’t changed my life. I never would have been able to have the relationships that I do. I never would have been able to take care of my father the way I did when he was sick. So many things.” Cooper’s statements attest to the fact that alcohol affects more than just yourself — it also affects those around you.

The beloved star of the ‘Harry Potter’ franchise has struggled, like many other child actors, growing up in show business. While his character Harry was innocent and heroic, for Daniel Radcliffe, reallife challenges started affecting him, namely his addiction to alcohol. In a recent interview, Radcliffe stated how he came to the realisation that “the drinking was unhealthy and damaging to my body and my social life,” and how he had become “a recluse at 20.” He even admitted how he used to drink before going on the set, and how he confided in co-star Gary Oldman who’d also been addicted to alcohol. Despite now being sober, Radcliffe admits it’s not easy to maintain his sobriety at events where there’s alcohol. One of the greatest lessons he’s learned is that he had to want a sober life for himself. He stated in the same interview, “I had to stop myself. And stopping has shown me a world of happiness that I didn’t think was possible.”

LINDSAY LOHAN In a candid interview with Oprah Winfrey, ‘Parent Trap’ actress Lindsay Lohan admitted that she had used cocaine between 10 to 15 times, but alcohol was her biggest addiction. It's hard to argue with her when you consider she has been arrested multiple times for incidences centred around drinking. She claimed that she didn't even like doing drugs, but that she “had to do it because it was the only thing that allowed her to keep partying harder and for longer.” Woah, that is definitely the mindset of someone who needs to take a step back from partying. Lindsay has been in and out of rehab countless times.

RUSSELL BRAND Russell Brand is not shy about his past, in which he battled significant drug and alcohol issues that nearly killed him. On top of this, Brand battled a rampant sex addiction. When asked how many people he had sex with in a month, he answered, "Work out how many days and, here’s a simple rule, triple it! I love it. I’ve a very addictive personality.” Brand's commitment to sobriety is admirable though, especially when you consider it was one of the factors behind his divorce with Katy Perry. The singer was allegedly all about that party lifestyle, which, as you can imagine, would not sit well with a man who wanted to raise a family and move into a calmer phase of his life. When talking about his former addiction, he reflected on his personality as well, stating, "I have friends who can smoke weed, swill gin, even do crack, and then merrily get on with their lives. For me this is not an option. I will relinquish all else to ride that buzz to oblivion."

STEPHEN KING Horror novelist Stephen King struggled with drugs and alcohol for a considerable period of time. In 1987, King’s family and friends staged an intervention, dumping evidence of his addictions in front of him. King immediately sought help and quit all forms of drugs and alcohol in the late 1980s. He said, “There's a thing in AA, something they read in a lot of meetings, “The Promises.” Most of those promises have come true in my life, We'll come to know a new freedom and new happiness, that's true. But it also says in there, “We will not regret the past nor wish to shut the door on it. And I have no wish to shut the door on the past. I have been pretty upfront about my past. But do I regret? I do. I do. I regret the necessity.” King’s not about to pretend he didn’t have struggles with alcohol, nor does he think he should hide it, either. It’s a part of who he is, and he’s been sober ever since his family intervention.

DAVID HASSELHOFF A home video of a drunken ‘Baywatch’ star Hasselhoff went viral in 2007, receiving airtime on countless news programmes and across the internet. His visitation rights with his daughters were temporarily suspended, forcing him to seek serious help for his addiction. In 2015, he said of his stint in rehab, “It is my responsibility to do the best I can and to take it one day at a time. But alcohol can become deadly. The scariest is when you go into a meeting and you’re like, ‘Where’s Steve?’ and they say, ‘Oh Steve died last night’. But you just met him yesterday! It’s a very scary, deadly thing that needs to be addressed.” Indeed, Hasselhoff takes his battles with alcohol much more seriously these days, and has also decided to transform his lifestyle completely with diet and exercise.

MEL GIBSON

Mel Gibson has publicly admitted to battling alcoholism for most of his adult life. He was arrested in 2009 for driving under the influence. In a previous 2006 arrest, made on the basis of suspected drunk driving, the arresting officer claimed he made anti-Semitic remarks. In the past, Gibson sought professional help, and checked himself into rehab for his alcohol problem. In 2016, reported Gibson laying out the harsh reality that comes with thinking about quitting alcohol. “They say there’s only three options: You go insane, you die, or you quit.”

These celebrities illustrate that alcohol is often used to self-medicate and to alleviate life’s stresses. Their honesty about their struggles are both heartbreaking and endearing. When alcohol consumption becomes abusive, it’s time to seek treatment. It’s important to address the underlying issues in order to treat alcohol addiction. What’s HOT this Summer? Make sure your body is trending for 2018 MEN (The DAD BOD)

The newest edition to the booming fitness industry on the coast, Luke is owner and coach of Marbella´s first “women´s only outdoor boot camp company” – Miss Fit Marbella. Luke specialises in fitness for women, (weight loss and toning) and is a strong believer in training outdoors, which is why, all of his sessions are based on the beaches of Marbella, Puerto Banus and Nueva Andalucia. Expect to find articles that focus on exercise for the female sex, tips on how to achieve your body goals, help on those stubborn problem areas, education of nutrition and lifestyle and how exercise doesn’t have to be boring! “Don’t mistake fitness for a gym! Fitness is more than that, it is a lifestyle and can be anywhere or everywhere!”

76 MARBELLAROCKS | ISSUE 39

Research from a study published at the end of 2017, suggested that a women’s favourite body type was the “Dad Bod!" If you are unaware of the term, it is defined as “softly round” by the Urban Dictionary. Women found a man with a “Dad Bod” more attractive for a number of reasons; firstly because it is manly, secondly it showed they didn’t care about the gym or themselves more than their relationship or partner and thirdly because it made men more approachable. However, further research showed women preferred a more muscular “Dad Bod” as opposed to a soft out of shape one! Think Rugby player, broad shoulders, big legs, but a soft middle. No abs in this body guys. The beauty of this for men is that it is a realistic and achievable body for those who want to be in trend this year! The “Dad Bod” doesn’t require strict dieting and men could get the look whilst sitting between the national averages of body fat. The only work that really needs to be done is in the gym. Women wanted broad shoulders, muscular legs and a big chest. Now whilst some of you out there will be in the “lucky category” and natural possess all three, I am guessing 90% of you guys won’t!

Therefore how do you train to get the “Dad Bod” look?

I recommend weight training, a minimum of 3 times, up to 5 times a week and working towards hypertrophy! Hypertrophy is a training method used to cause muscle growth. Scientifically speaking, hypertrophy should revolve around a few principles, being mechanical load, high frequency, progressive load and strategic programming for recovery. In Lehman’s terms: 1. 2. 3. 4.

Make Make Make Make steps

sure you sure you sure you sure you again.

lift weights. increase the weight each and every workout. train each body part 2/3 times a week. take rest before applying the first three

Example Workout Programme (You can take days off in between as this is based on 5 days per week)

The gym, well more so exercise, is known for releasing a hormone called serotonin. Serotonin is a brain chemical and neurotransmitter that has a few functions, one of which is regulating mood. In very simple terms, a higher level of serotonin directly correlates to increased happiness and lower levels link to depression or feeling down. Exercise is proven to increase serotonin levels via producing more tryptophan (an amino acid that manufactures serotonin) and proven to increase the speed at which serotonin is released. Therefore, exercise makes you happier! And exercise has been found to decrease levels of stress and anxiety. So if you want a happy mind, make sure you fall in love with the gym.

WOMEN (BODY CONFIDENCE)

Now some people may say, I want the Kim Kardashian body, or others, I want the CrossFit athletic body but research showed men’s taste in women’s body types varied massively and the most attractive thing across the board was body confidence. When asked, respondents suggested, there isn’t a perfect body type but women who were confident in their body, knew how to show it off, flaunt it and of course use it in the bedroom, confidently, were the main attractions. Now, I am a man and I completely agree with the above. Personally I like a girl with curves in the right places, but that doesn’t mean I find slim women or larger women any less attractive. A confident woman is a turn on and it’s very much in line with the way society is positively changing. Self love is being pushed by more and more health professionals and online influencers amongst women, suggest body happiness is key to mental happiness! Loving the skin you are in is essential and generally this comes more so with age.

Now how can I tell you to get that body type?

The answer is, I can’t, as each body type and goal will require different training systems or methods. However, I can also tell you as a man, a woman who trains or keeps fit is also a massive turn on. We don’t expect a fitness model, we don’t expect you to train 7 times a week but a little commitment to the cause is definitely a positive. So my suggestion here is find a body type you like, or look at the things you want to improve and then start to work towards it. If you need help, ask a professional or someone who trains themselves for some advice. Choose sports or exercises you enjoy and try not to make fitness a chore. You are more likely to stick to a plan if you enjoy it. And in the long term you are more likely to gain the body, you would like to have or you think men like. Join a gym, go to group classes, run, get a PT, take up a sport. There are plenty of amazing facilities and trainers along the coast so there is no excuse. There are also many avenues that don’t cost a fortune! The chances are, if you train and see some changes, your partner sees some changes, you will gain more confidence in yourself and your partner will enjoy the newly gained confidence. After all, it is the body type we desire! Whatever you do this year, keep fit, keep healthy and be confident in your body, as the research has spoken for itself, we don’t desire the unachievable or the amazing figures we see so often on social media.

MiSeA newSports Bar at M13 Gym concept in healthy eating has been born

ocated by the M13 Gym in Centro Plaza, MiSe serves only the freshest, finest, healthiest and high protein food that helps to aid in training and weight loss. All products are organic and Halal certified so you can be sure you are getting the best of the best. On arrival to the MiSe Sports Bar you will be mightily impressed by the diversified menu – there is a wide range of drinks, health shots, smoothies, shakes, as well as breakfast, lunch, dinner, dessert and a snack menu for those on the run.

TO START

We opted for the ‘Wellness Shots’ to start and freshen our palettes. ‘Burning Man’ was definitely a real burner but you could taste the goodness as you swigged down the Lemon, Ginger and Cayenne. A softer option was the most popular ‘Immune Boosting Ginger Shot’ consisting of Apple, Lemon, Ginger Root and Tumeric Root. It was fresh yet sweet with the ginger giving an added kick. A great pick me up we did feel instantly energised 5 minutes later. At €3 a pop it is well priced in the organic food market.

BREAKFAST

The menu is fantastic here at MiSe. Not only can you sample from a wide ranging breakfast menu consisting of the ‘Bruce Lee Sandwich’ (egg, turkey breast, low fat cheddar on muffin with a side of fruit) or the ‘Chuck Norris Yoghurt’ (Greek yoghurt topped with Strawberries, Blueberries, Raspberries, Granola and Honey) but

86 MARBELLAROCKS | ISSUE 39

there is also simple choices like oatmeal, pancakes and scrambled egg. Our favourite was the ‘Tom Hardy’ whey protein pancakes with fruit.

MiSe MAINS

Moving onto mains there is 4 Healthy Salad options, ‘Make Your Own Bowl’ meal prep with 18 different ingredients and wraps, burgers and chicken. We opted for the ‘Truffel Burger’ which was a beef burger with Portobello mushrooms, baby spinach, cheddar and truffle mayo – the burger was delicious with plenty of fresh meat and fillings and a

GASTRONOMY

fresh bap made on site with the finest whole wheat flower. It came with a side of chips and salad. Next up we tasted the classic ‘Chicken Caesar Wrap’ with grilled chicken, romaine lettuce, parmesan cheese, sunflower seeds and light Caesar dressing. Served on a tortilla with a side of fruit or sweet potatoes. The wrap was amazing. Healthy yet incredibly tasty. There are also 3 other wraps to choose from including ‘Prawn Caesar’, ‘BBQ Bistro Lean Cheesesteak’ or the ‘Mediterranean Wrap’ with feta cheese, cucumber and hummus. For dessert there are a few options including a Caramel Slice, Chia Pudding or Energy Balls. The pancakes can double up as a dessert too.

In fact, if you are looking to get fit there is no better place to come because all the toned and muscly bodies will spur you on to get

in shape and lose the weight. It is also a friendly and welcoming place so beginners to training and afraid of weight lifters will not feel alienated. All in all highly recommended place where you will have fun, make friends and above all eat healthily and lose weight or gain muscle – depending on your preference!

SOCIAL GURUS

The MiSe is run by the M13 Gym, winners of the Marbella Awards 2017 for Best Gym, but managed by Christof who is there every day and a great and sociable host. At the moment the Sports Bar is open from 9am to 5pm but will open till 8pm or 10pm in Summer. MiSe do meal prep to collect in the Sports Bar but in a few months will offer a home delivery service as far as Estepona and Elviria. However, you do want to come to the gym and sports bar to get in on the action. It is bustling any day of the week with seating for 40-50 people. There is a lot of social comradery here with gym professionals and fitness enthusiasts sharing meal and training tips with one another.

Virgo

21 APR – 20 MAY

It’s time for bold, brave moves this April. Showcase that personal power and combine it with a touch of diplomacy and sprinkle of compromise. You could be on the brink of quite literally cashing in on past efforts as something returns that was perhaps left hanging or you just thought was going nowhere. By mid-month you’re in a position to move forward as doors open. But while something may spring up from the past, it’s important to evolve, to innovate and reach for something new. Opt for something more edgy, electric and alive than you may have allowed yourself to experience previously. The same goes for relationships. It’s not meant to be hard work. And if it has been, time to ditch that needy lover for someone new. April shows you a side of romance with a flirty, easy flowing feel. The fact is, life isn’t meant to be all serious business although you can make some serious moves now that can take you anywhere from the corner office or just right to someone’s heart now.

There’s been a call to freedom stirring in your soul for some time Taurus. As your birthday approaches how will you answer it? First you may have to answer a few questions around that home, family or long term security issue however. You may have avoided this, telling yourself things are actually well, semi-okay. But that just won’t cut it anymore. As your birthday rolls around it’s time for a new cycle - and that’s going to mean shaking things up. You’re on the brink of a radical and exciting new phase which points to a massive partnership potential for you if you are single. But making the most of it will involve leaving some aspect of the status quo behind. Let’s face it, whether you are settled or single, you’ve been craving something deeper and more satisfying for some time. You may have kept this desire a secret – either from others or perhaps from yourself but April is time to acknowledge and own it and above all, to know it is possible. Freedom to have all this is calling you as your birthday approaches. Come and get your love, Taurus. It’s waiting for you.

114 MARBELLAROCKS | ISSUE 39

April begins to replay as the past or people from your past feature on some level. Look at what or who does return – perhaps for one last go-around, one more chance, one final roll of the dice. It either works or remains relevant for you, and if it does then take it forward into the future with you. Or it has been lived out and if so, then let it go for good. However, something or someone that you had totally given up on could return this April. Questions around what you really need are also going to come up. And I’m not just talking about material requirements but what you need on an emotional level too. Are you getting enough? And when is enough, enough? There’s a bit of the ‘Wolf of Wall Street’ about all of this and the need to ask yourself not just what it is you are striving for but why? Your money, success and rewards will feature but it’s also important to look at when to keep striving and when to stop. Do you know? You’re crackling with potential now and between now and October, you will be put in a position where you can either cash in or sell out. Don’t sell out what really matters.

When it comes to love, if something is working, you’ll know it. If it’s not – don’t ignore it now. Time for a relationship health check this April, Cancer. No matter what your status, the path to romance (or rekindling it) lies with your social circle now. Either in the form of you and your significant other taking time out to play or singles making an increased effort to get out and about. Someone you encountered before could now swing back into your orbit and if so, expect fireworks even if last time was a fizzle. Being more outgoing and open ushers in opportunities for you in other areas via those you already know or even new connections you make now. You have a ‘no fear’ attitude whether you’re tackling that relationship issue or knocking on career doors. People you meet could open doors you were not aware even existed around a job, a career path, a vocation or just a way of getting yourself ‘out there’ so explore this. Transformations around relationships are occurring - not just partnerships of a romantic kind but working relationships, business partnerships, collaborations and friendships. But hey, it’s all love after all.

It may seem events are conspiring to push you down a certain path this April, Leo. Something may suddenly come to an end or just not work out the way you thought it would, causing you to abruptly change direction or just put you in the position where you have to adapt. If this happens, please don’t see this as a set-back but your opportunity for reinvention and to create something far more supportive for yourself in the longer term. Especially when it comes to your work and career. These words are connected but often end up being two different things. Now is your opportunity to make them one and the same. Yes, we may have to take a ‘day job’ but usually this is just a stage – a necessary piece of corporate crowd-funding to bank roll that big picture. But if the security of that pay cheque has turned into a rut, this month could offer a surprise exit strategy. One that puts you back on a shining path to glory that’s yours and yours alone to walk. You know what it is you need to be doing in the long term. Get your shine on and get that happening this month, Leo. Good luck.

What’s your currency this April, Virgo? No. I’m not talking about pounds, dollars, euros or yen. I’m talking about what energises and fuels your life. The electric charge, the current that flows through you. Current = currency. Yes, of course this can relate to your cash and April could generate more flow of this via and through you. How comfortable do you feel handling this? But you’re in a position to ‘energise’ other areas of your life too and increase the current – or get more confidence to do so. Expect an electric jolt that attracts something new. Singles could see a lover appear with a big age difference – at least seven years either way. Remember it’s the charge you feel, not the number. Others could be electrified with courage to break free of restrictions. Perhaps from something that has stunted your growth or controlled your direction for far too long. When it comes to your career, you can combine confident moves with a touch of diplomacy enabling you to reach for the right thing to say and create the right impression as you do so. Update your professional image if you need to. And get current, Virgo.

One final awakening takes place this April and it relates to your personal life or close working relationships, Libra. You may have to navigate some unexpected twists and turns this month. But if you end up off-the-beaten track don’t worry. You are right where you are supposed to be. Try to keep an open mind and above all, to remember that opportunity often doesn’t look how we thought it would and also that you should never judge a book by its cover. Guessing games around one particular connection will come to an end. One way or another. Part of this awakening process may also involve your home and where you are living. Have you been feeling you belong someplace else than where you are currently? Some kind of ‘shift’ literally looks inevitable now. This also may have implications for where and how you are living if you are partnered up or even share your house with a close friend. Chances are the past few years have been a bumpy ride for most Librans. The good news is that you only have a few more weeks of this uncertainty remaining. Your answers or resolution are close now. Get ready for your eyes wide open moment that brings this in this month.

In the words of John Mayer: say what you mean to say this April, Scorpio. Winning with words, the power of words and above all, standing by your word could see you bringing something to a successful conclusion during the first week of the month. Above all, do not promise more than you can deliver (keeping your word) and follow through with what you say (walking your talk). Do something with those ideas – especially the ones you have been sitting on for some time. Work and business dealings are favoured from mid-month onwards and anything from a deal to an interview process can be brought to a successful conclusion at the end of the month. Again, it’s all about what you communicate. This goes double for love right now but again, keep your word. You’ve the ability to attract but don’t take flirtation beyond a certain point unless you fully intend to follow through. April is all about your game plan whether it’s for love or life in general. And your intention. So say what you mean, and mean what you say and watch what a little word magic can do for you.

Has life been feeling ‘heavy’ of late? Romance status set permanently set to ‘Unpredictable’? The good news is that April brings you a preview of better things to come, Sag. New opportunities especially around your income can be unearthed and come to light now. Clarity comes with this and this can reset your love life if used correctly. Clearing away confusion begins by seeing what you no longer need. Start with that closet and then move on. Are you hanging on to things because they provide a connection to your past? That means you still live there. New opportunities especially around romance, fun and how others see you are knocking on your door asking to be let in. But they can’t do this if there’s no space for them. Declutter everything from that wardrobe to your laptop. Yes, that includes deleting those messages from that lover who just didn’t pan out. With every link to your past your chuck out, sell on eBay or trash, you will see that confusion and unpredictability lessen just a little bit. And your life lighten up. Until all that is left is a clear idea of what you need and what works. And a huge big space for something or someone new to enter now.

Who or what is blocking you this month? This could have come about so subtly and insidiously that you may not have been aware of it. Until now. Surprise revelations occur this April which will allow you to see just what restricts you or stands in your way. Once this occurs, you can step free of it. Something ‘owns’ you rather than the other way around. This can be anything from a relationship that you know deep down is too much like hard work, to that treadmill of job or the need to continue to do it to buy things that you now see you don’t need – or even want. Get ready for a whole new set of priorities to emerge for you. Adjustments or changes around your home and lifestyle may follow as a result. And if you need to make changes to living arrangements, sign leases, contracts and finance agreements, now is the time. Other sea goats may have come to the realisation that their lifestyle just isn’t that. They have no life or how it is run is out-of-alignment with their needs. Now is the moment to make radical changes if necessary to live not just a little bit – but a lot more.

You’re the innovator, the magician/ entrepreneur of the zodiac, Aquarius. And just occasionally the hermit up in his or her ivory tower taking a very lofty view of what’s going on below. Yes, you have a broad view but have you been so fixed on it you’ve missed something right under your nose? Something is illuminated for you this month, Aquarius and once you ‘see’ it, it could act as a catalyst for a profound period of change which may take several months to complete. Whatever it is, you’re shaken out of that tower and are down in the dragon’s den. Whether this makes you Donkey from Shrek or Daenerys Targaryen is for you to determine. Expect a restructuring in a key area as a result – or maybe just in your thoughts and how you see the world. Fate is at work here so if something comes to an end, it has been lived out for you so bear this in mind if goodbyes are necessary. New ideas or a taking a novel approach will take you far. How far? That depends on you. This is your once-in-alifetime opportunity to begin something that creates a new, no-holds barred future for you. Life is like a dragon. You can be turned into toast, or you can get on its back and ride it.

Ready for a sea of change, Pisces? Watch what opportunities wash up at your feet from mid-April onwards. Of course, you’ve got to have a plan to put into action. Do this but don’t get too attached to the results. Set events in motion then adopt a beachcomber’s approach and see what the tide brings in. Work opportunities and dreamy yet passionate love encounters are just two possibilities on the horizon for you. Time to take the initiative to begin with. Ask for that raise, apply for that better paying job or start that side hustle. Business, studying and commercial ventures are highlighted for you as well as identifying money making possibilities right out of your home. Perhaps a table top start-up or being an airbnb host? On some level or another it’s time for you to explore a few new possibilities and even your own potential. I should say never underestimate a Pisces or perhaps, don’t underestimate yourself. It’s funny how even experienced astrologers can fall into this trap – or should I say net as you sign rules all things sea-related. Cast your net wide this month, Pisces. There’s treasure in the depths for you.
