EDITOR’S NOTE B
eyond excited to tell you guys about the plans for Rocks Magazine this year. As well as the newly launched Rocksmag. com portal (live now – be sure to check it out) we are launching two magazines in London and Dubai with a third in the pipeline for next year, a location that I had only ever dreamed possible. When we came up for the idea for Marbella Rocks Magazine 5 years ago it was always the plan to launch in multiple territories – every month we provide cutting edge news, what’s on, calendar, celebrity, music, entertainment, fashion, hair, beauty, health, fitness, sport, tech, cars, gastronomy, travel, astrology and best of the web – all of which are global. It’s our goal to entertain so over the moon to be sharing our content with other cities that rock – London and Dubai. And of course, you lovely loyal Marbella bods still. Speaking of great content we have 4 features for you this month. First up we have an exclusive no holds barred interview with Ministry of Sound Marbella Sessions and Collections DJ Colin Francis, who is the new resident of super club Mirage. Followed swiftly by Your Ultimate Opening Party Guide on page 36 with 6 of the best clubs and nightlife brands in Marbella – plus our hot picks on where to go when the season kicks off in a few weeks. With culture at the forefront of our minds, we are lucky enough to live and frequent one of the most breathtaking locations in Spain and indeed the world, steeped in history dating back to 25,000 BC you will literally be amazed by our Amazing Andalucia feature. Planning a weekend out of Marbella this month (we recommend before the unmissable Opening Parties on April 27-May 1) then try Fort Bravo Texas in Tabernas, the Nerja Caves or the Antequera Dolmens Site where the Menga Dolmen weighing 180 tonnes is situated. FYI the largest rock in Stonehenge weighs in at 23 tonnes. Staggering stuff. We’d also like to thank US Open winner Michael Campbell for his insightful and informative interview on the US Masters this year on page 52. Having taken on the tricky Augusta Greens for 10 Masters Competitions who better to give you a lowdown on the contenders for this year’s green jacket and his personal experiences of the pro golf circuit. Plus, the Marbella Awards 2017 nominees have been decided and now it’s your turn to vote. Who will win the best of the best in each category. Go to page 32 to see the shortlist and visit Rocksmag.com to make your vote count.

AMANDA PUTS HACKING BEHIND HER TO WED LONG TERM PARTNER
Hollywood A Lister Amanda Seyfried has had an eventful month. The beginning of March saw nude pictures of her with an exboyfriend illegally posted on website, Celeb Jihad. Amanda’s legal team insist the private images were illegally obtained by a third party and leaked to the site without the Mamma Mia star’s consent. The team have demanded they are taken down immediately while preserving any evidence relating to the alleged leak for an upcoming court case. Amanda - who has been happily dating ‘Wild’ actor Thomas Sadowski since March 2016 and has been engaged to since September 2016 had some much better news only 10 days later. On Sunday night (March 12) just days before Thomas’ planned Late Late Show TV performance the couple married in a
secret ceremony in the country. Thomas said to a shocked James Corden on the show whilst proudly showing off his wedding band, “We eloped… we just took off into the country with an officiant and just the two of us, and we did our thing.” Gushing about his new bride, Thomas went on to say, “She’s the person I love, admire, respect most in the world.” Amanda and Thomas are also expecting their first baby together in May this year. Amanda has hinted in an interview that they have already found out the sex of the baby and that she has been craving cottage cheese and hopes “he” will like it when he’s older.
SELENA & THE WEEKND GOING STRONG
Troubled teen singer Selena Gomez has bagged herself one of the hottest men in music, The Weeknd and things look to be going from strength to strength, as these pictures of the duo in Toronto clearly show. Selena, who was embroiled in a very public meltdown last year, is back on her feet and into the arms of The Weeknd whose hits include ‘Starboy’ and ‘It Ain’t
TAYLOR TO LAUNCH RECORD LABEL

Me’. Although her happiness has come at a price. The Weeknd (real name Abel Tesfaye) dumped supermodel Bella Hadid to hook up with Selena. Bella and sister Gigi have since unfollowed Selena’s Instagram account and the former friends have not been in contact with each other. From these pictures at least Selena doesn’t seem fazed by the fall out.
news KATY PERRY ADMITS TO MORE THAN KISSING A GIRL
Katy Perry took to the stage at the Human Rights Campaign Gala in LA and revealed a lot about how her life has encouraged her art. "I'm just a singer and songwriter, honestly, I speak my truths and I paint my fantasies into these little bite size pop songs. For instance, 'I kissed a girl and I liked it.' Truth be told, I did more than that!” Perry confessed. "But how was I going to reconcile that with a gospel singing girl raised in youth groups that were pro-conversion camps?” she continued. “What I did know was I was curious and even then I knew sexuality wasn't as black and white as this [Rasario] dress. And honestly, I haven't always gotten it right but in 2008 when that song came out I knew that I started a conversation and a lot of the world seemed curious enough to sing along, too." The gay rights lobbying group honoured the pop singer with its National Equality Award.
TRIBUTES POUR IN FOR ROCK AND ROLL LEGEND
Rock and Roll legend Chuck Berry has died aged 90 and the who’s who of the music scene rushed to pay tributes to the ‘father of rock.’ Bruce Springsteen said he was "the greatest pure rock 'n' roll writer who ever lived," while Rolling Stones frontman Mick Jagger said, "He lit up our teenage years, and blew life into our dreams of being musicians and performers". Rocker Alice Cooper tweeted that Berry was "the genesis behind the great sound of rock 'n' roll."
The guitarist and songwriter died of natural causes in the US state of Missouri on Saturday March 18. Seen as one of the fathers of rock 'n' roll with a career spanning 7 decades, influencing generations of musicians, including The Beatles, the Rolling Stones and the Beach Boys. Novelist Stephen King noted that Berry had a great innings for a rock star, saying, "Chuck Berry died. This breaks my heart, but 90 years old ain't bad for rock and roll. Johnny B. Goode forever."
‘PRINCESS’ MEGHAN TO QUIT ACTING
A sure sign that things are definitely hotting up between Meghan Markle and Prince Harry is the recent news that Meghan plans to quit acting to concentrate on philanthropy, a career move more suited to a Princess and future wife of the English monarchy. Meghan, 35, is currently in Toronto filming the seventh season of ‘Suits’ where she plays paralegal Rachel Zane. However this performance is said to be her last. Sources close to the US born star have said “she is done with Suits and acting in general.” The source went on to say, “Even before Harry she was starting to think about
transitioning out of acting. She wants to focus on other worldly endeavours that she is passionate about, like her philanthropy.” It is no secret that Harry and Meghan have gotten extremely close since they officially announced they were dating in November last year. They are pictured out together at functions, on holiday, at weddings and Meghan has even met and got close to the Queen. If this leading lady is seriously thinking of making it down the aisle with Harry you can be sure her new humanitarian career move will be welcomed by the Windsors. Serious Princess brownie points are being earnt here!
MEL B & STEPHEN SPLIT
Mel B has called time on her turbulent marriage to Stephen Belafonte just one month before they reached their 10 year anniversary – in a bid to save her $40m fortune. Under California state law, the courts can award indefinite spousal support if a couple has been wed more than 10 years without a prenup (which the couple didn’t have). The fact that Mel and Stephen have now only been married 9 years and 11 months means
he is not entitled to “live off her money.” Tom Cruise divorced Nicole Kidman in a similar move in 2001. Mel, 41, has amassed a $40m fortune from her Spice Girls career and has one daughter with Stephen, Madison aged 5. The couple have had a checkered past with reports of huge fights within the marriage. Mel B has often been photographed with bruises and cuts on her and Stephen has confessed to having a temper and violent past.

#BROFATHER
Marbella Rocks is loving the newly coined phrase… brofather. The Urban Dictionary describes a brofather as, “An extremely cool dad. One that is a "bro" and a “father”. One that always has your back, and can easily be considered one of your closest friends, yet is a dad when he needs to be.” Trending on social media are the cutest clips of fathers and sons enjoying spending quality time together. Are you a brofather? We’d love to hear your stories in our upcoming Modern Parenting feature. Get in touch via info@rocksmag.com.
WE’VE DIED AND GONE TO CAR HEAVEN
The Geneva International Motor Show is undoubtedly the highlight of the year for automakers and motorheads. And this year was unlike any other with some of the most awaited, jaw dropping supercars on display. Here’s our top picks from the show.
McLaren 720S
At the heart of the 720S is a 4.0 litre twin turbo V8 engine producing 711 bhp of torque. It replaces the 650S and even outpaces the Ferrari 488 with a 0-62 mph time of 2.9 seconds and a top speed of 212 mph. The 720S is built with lightweight carbon fibre which is now extended to the roof with thin pillars providing excellent all round visibility and allowing room for its new and improved dihedral doors. According to Hadyn Baker, director of the McLaren Super Series the 720S “has the widest breadth of road and track capability of any McLaren so far.”

640hp, active aero with 750% more downforce and one controversial lap time. A 640hp Huracan with 40kg stripped out of it making it even faster. Plus, some very clever active aero, the Performante keeps the standard Huracan’s four-wheel drive and can be optioned with the controversial Lamborghini Dynamic Steering if you so wish - both this and the passive system are recalibrated for a more consistent feel. Topped off with a 5.2 litre V.10 which sounds mightily impressive.

FOR HER #MAXIDRESSES WHAT'S TRENDING...
Maxi dresses are firmly in this Spring/Summer and what’s more that glam party dress can be reworn for any occasion. Fashion blogger Zahra Andersen who has styled Eva Longoria among a host of other celebs - tells us exactly how to get it right with this indispensable guide.
We’ve got to talk about that maxidress that you've worn for a party once and then sits in your wardrobe collecting dust! From time to time you take it out look at it and put it back in the
closet until the right okay occasion comes along and you can wear it again. I'm going to show you how you can restyle and wear that maxidress for everyday. Before you buy a dress this is what you should go for: If you want to restyle a party gown always go for soft material - it's easier to restyle compared to hard material. I always go for a chiffon or silky dress which is both flirty and romantic. Ensure you get the right fit for your body type and a style that suits you and your personality – for me that’s Boho. This dress is from Bohoo.com and this is how you wear it as an everyday outfit.
ONE DRESS / FOUR WAYS TO WEAR
1. THE WEDDING OUTFIT
For the accessories I went with gold shoes from YSL, a delicate gold arm bangle and a clutch from mytheresa.com. Simple and Sexy but not too much to outdo the bride! It’s OK to look modern and glam at weddings these days – prim and proper suits/dresses are out.

My favourite jacket is this McQueen leather jacket and I wear it with everything. Wearing leather with your maxidress will make it instantly edgier for the day or evening. Change the heels with emonkibiza.com boots and the gold jewellery to silver/gold perfect for that Tarifa style everyday outfit.

BABY BIRD CUPCAKES Entertain the kids at Easter with these adorable and tasty nesting baby bluebird cupcakes. Easy to make and requires minimal decorating just a cup of shredded coconut for the nest and buttercream piping for the birds. These would also go do down a treat for a lunch with the girls. INGREDIENTS (Makes 12) • 1½ cup all-purpose flour • 1 tsp. baking powder • ½ tsp. salt • 8 tbsp. unsalted butter • 1 cup sugar • 3 large eggs • 1½ tsp. pure vanilla extract • ¾ cup milk • 1½ cup of shredded coconut • Buttercream Icing • Chocolate to decorate eyes • Yellow and blue food colouring
RECIPE
METHOD 1. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees. Line a cupcake pan with paper liners; set aside. 2. Spread coconut on a rimmed baking sheet; bake until light brown, 8 to 10 minutes, rotating pan once. Set aside to cool. 3. In a medium bowl, sift together flour, baking powder, and salt. In the bowl or an electric mixer fitted with the paddle attachment,
cream butter and sugar until light and fluffy. Add eggs, one at a time; scrape down bowl, and beat in vanilla. 4. Add flour mixture and milk alternately, beginning and ending with flour mixture. 5. Divide batter evenly among liners, about three-quarters full each. Bake until golden and tops spring back to touch, about 20 minutes, rotating pan once if needed. Transfer pans to wire rack; cool completely. 6. Lightly frost cupcakes with 1 cup buttercream set aside. Form each nest with 2 tablespoons toasted coconut. Tint 2 tablespoons reserved buttercream pale yellow; place
in a pastry bag fitted with an Ateco leaf tip; set aside. Tint remaining buttercream light blue; place in a pastry bag fitted with an Ateco plain round tip, and pipe three bluebird heads, 3/4 inch in diameter, onto each cupcake. Using leaf tip, pipe yellow beaks. With a toothpick, add meltedchocolate eyes. Try to ensure a steady hand when doing piping to avoid errors.

INGREDIENTS (Makes 2) • 4 hollow chocolate bunnies • 1 part salted caramel vodka, chilled • 1 part chocolate liqueur, chilled • 1 part half & half METHOD 1. THE FATE OF THE FURIOUS
TEXAS: JUMP ON BOARD
JULIE BUNTIN: MARLENA
One of the most popular franchises of all time, The Fast and the Furious, is back for its eighth instalment and this newly named film is sure to rock. The story sees main characters Dom (Vin Diesel) and Letty (Michelle Rodriguez) on their honeymoon while Brian and Mia have retired from the game, and the rest of the crew has been exonerated. The globetrotting team has found a semblance of a normal life or so it would seem. But when a mysterious woman Cipher (Charlize Theron) seduces Dom into the world of crime he can’t seem to escape and a betrayal of those closest to him, they will face trials that will test them as never before. Directed by F. Gary Gray whose hits include Straight Outta Compton, The Italian Job and Law Abiding Citizen, you can definitely tell this film has a slightly cooler, more edgier slant to it that the previous outings when James Wan was at the helm. Gray won an MTV Music Video Award for directing TLC’s cult video Waterfalls and grew up in NYC. The film also benefits from some stellar supporting actors with Helen Mirren, Jason Statham, Kurt Russell and Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson also starring. With an April 14 opening date and a PG 13 rating this would be a great Easter blockbuster to catch for families with older kids.
Texas are back after a 4 year break with their ninth studio album, Jump On Board, released by BMG on April 21. The first single from the album is Let’s Work It Out, an upbeat dancefloor number with a bit of Texas rock and roll thrown in. The video for the track features French footballer Thierry Henry. Jump On Board was written and produced by Texas’ Johnny McElhone and Sharleen Spiteri, in London and Glasgow, and mixed by Craig Silvey who has worked with Arcade Fire, Florence & The Machine and Noel Gallagher among others. “When music’s in your DNA, what’s gone in will come back out,” Texas lead singer Sharleen said. “Jump On Board has references of course, but it’s an upfront, modern-sounding record.” Jump On Board is the follow-up to Texas’ 2013 album The Conversation. The Scottish group originally formed in Glasgow in 1986 and have enjoyed a career spanning three decades selling 35 million albums and 3 UK number one album releases and 13 top ten singles. “We feel refreshed,” Sharleen admits. “We definitely had a great time making this. It’s time to jig it all up. It’s like a new beginning. This is the next part of our story, and we’re loving it.” This is an uplifting and sure to be classic new album from one of Britain’s best loved bands. Now signed to BMG, Texas have made a series of absolute belting songs including the back to the dance floor first single ‘Let’s Work It Out’ and the stone cold smash hit ‘Tell That Girl’. Definitely one for your download list.
A novel that’s as invigorating and devastating as an intense teenage crush, Marlena is about the people we encounter in life — no matter how briefly — who leave a permanent mark. An electric debut novel from Buntin, about love, addiction, and also loss; the story of two girls and the feral year that will cost one her life, and define the other’s for decades Everything about fifteen-year-old Cat’s new town in rural Michigan is lonely and off-kilter, until she meets her neighbor, the manic, beautiful, pill-popping Marlena. Cat, inexperienced and desperate for connection, is quickly lured into Marlena’s orbit by little more than an arched eyebrow and a shake of white-blond hair. As the two girls turn the untamed landscape of their desolate small town into a kind of playground, Cat catalogues a litany of firsts―first drink, first cigarette, first kiss―while Marlena’s habits harden and calcify. Within the year, Marlena is dead, drowned in six inches of icy water in the woods nearby. Now, decades later, when a ghost from that pivotal year surfaces unexpectedly, Cat must try to forgive herself and move on, even as the memory of Marlena keeps her tangled in the past. Julie Buntin’s debut has the emotional sophistication of only the very best coming-of-age novels, so it’s no wonder it comes with a glowing blurb from Who Will Run the Frog Hospital author Lorrie Moore.

PHIL SAVAGE Phil Savage (pictured left) is head honcho at Ultima Promotions and organises all the top parties at the most exclusive and popular Marbella venues including the new and very exclusive Mirage Marbella Discoteca, Plaza Beach and News Cafe. Marbella Rocks caught up with the big man to find out about launching his new nightclub, Summer 2017 and plans for the future.
MIRAGE CAN YOU TELL US ABOUT YOUR NEW CLUB VENTURE MIRAGE?
Yes of course. I had the opportunity to take an old derelict nightclub perfectly located at the entrance of Puerto Banus. The potential of this venue was too great to ignore…I saw a blank canvas with endless possibilities. I spoke with my business partners Charley Caradas and Igor Chiodaroli and we started generating ideas and a concept. Our mission was very clear - “To be the very best”. To deliver the most extravagant and visually impacting venue in Club Land, accompanied by the greatest sounding audio system available. To create an experience like never before, bringing together the industries finest entertainment. World renowned DJ's, international artists, leading promotions, events and in-house visceral performances. Bringing Las Vegas levels of glamour with the thrills and excitement of Ibiza. Dark, seductive with the use of gloss black and gold high end materials throughout, showcasing beautiful chandeliers, a diverse fully adaptive lighting system featuring a 10m wide HD video wall, cutting edge laser system, and a 10 point Megatron CO2 system. The list goes on... Service is top on our agenda! Mirage customers are going to feel welcome, entertained, special and wanting to come again!
HOW BIG IS THE CLUB?
It’s a big space which we will need. I truly believe we have nailed the distribution. We have integrated some very cool features and made great use of the areas we had to play with.
IS IT TRUE YOU WILL HAVE A LASER SHOW AND A 185DB FUNKTION ONE AUDIO SYSTEM TO MATCH IBIZA’S BIGGEST AND BEST VENUES?
I want our guests entertained! Never a dull moment. We are very aware not to go overboard but the club boasts an array of best in industry features. From our customized brand new Funktion One sound system, Multi tasking Lasers, CO2 megatron canons, 4k HD video wall, there is too much to mention but I think we have one of the most capable clubs in the world, not only Marbella.
WHAT'S THE DECOR GOING TO BE LIKE?
Extravagant. When you enter Mirage I want the customer to have a real sense of occasion. As the name suggests, you won’t believe your eyes!
WHAT CLIENTELE ARE YOU HOPING TO ATTRACT?
The best Marbella has to offer. This is the venue you get dressed up for, looking your best and feeling your best.
28 MARBELLAROCKS | ISSUE 29
Whether you take a VIP table or want to enjoy the night from the dancefloor. Making an effort is expected. Our beautiful customers are part of the theme of the venue.
WHAT IS UNIQUE/DIFFERENT ABOUT MIRAGE?
Just about everything. Attention to detail is seen everywhere.
ARE CLUB NIGHTS KINKY MALINKI, ACES BACK WITH ULTIMA AGAIN THIS SUMMER?
Yes Kinky Malinki and Aces return with Ultima and will feature at Mirage along with some exciting new additions, such as ABODE and a Colin Francis Residency every Friday. We have introduced a new RnB brand for 2017 called LITT every Thursday in collaboration with RichList which is gaining a lot of traction.
WHAT OTHER DJ’S/ACTS HAVE YOU SIGNED FOR SUMMER?
We’ve been busy! Disciples, Andrea Oliva, DJ EZ, MK, Giggs, Charley Sloth, Tom Zanetti, Kano, Donaeo, DJ Charlsey to name a few. We are working on many more but can’t announce just yet. I think it’s safe to say that it will be the strongest line up Marbella has ever seen! But please check miragemarbella.es for all the latest info and events.
PLAZA BEACH MARBELLA TOURIST FIGURES REVEAL LAST SUMMER HAS BEEN ONE OF THE BUSIEST ON RECORDS, WITH 2017 SET TO SMASH ALL EXISTING RECORDS – HOW HAVE PRE BOOKINGS BEEN GOING AT PLAZA?
Its hard to believe the growth of Plaza Beach and its seemingly never ending rise to the top! Our pre bookings are a direct indicator to how our coming season is going to be and it is looking MASSIVE! If I said how much we are up on pre sales you honestly wouldn’t believe me.
PLAZA BEACH IS FAST BECOMING THE NUMBER 1 BEACH CLUB, YOU BEAT OCEAN CLUB AND SALA BY THE SEA IN THE MARBELLA AWARDS PUBLIC VOTE TOO – WHY IS THE VENUE TROUNCING THE COMPETITION IN YOUR OPINION?
I think what Plaza Beach offers is relatively unique to the daytime beach venues in Marbella. It’s a more relaxed party atmosphere. Maybe slightly less pretentious than its
news competitors but you can still expect fantastic service and VIP status. It’s a great day out with a brilliant location being at the start of the Paseo. Ultima Promotions has had an integral part to play in the success of the Beach Club ensuring we have strong events and promotions. Another key part of Plaza Beach continued success is its management team, namely Jason Templeman, Paulinho Prediger and JR Hynds. Since Jason has come on board the level of detail and focus to all aspects of the running and operations is second to non and has enabled us to take on bigger events with confidence and a new level of professionalism.
HAVE THERE BEEN ANY REFURBISHMENTS OR CHANGES TO PLAZA SINCE LAST YEAR?
Significant changes have been made to the beach for 2017. The beach is looking incredible. New beautiful decking, more VIP bed options on the deck and on the beach, a brand new sound system, and a newly furnished Restaurant, with an incredible new head chef Nick Newman.
WHAT WILL BE THE STANDOUT PARTIES FOR YOU AT THE VENUE THIS YEAR?
Well special mention has to go to Kisstory. Last year was huge so now Kisstory has a residency every Friday of the summer. The end of month spray weekends we have Aces returning and the bookings are looking powerful with some incredible acts. We are also starting some in house events. Saturdays we will have OTT Saturdays a crazy entertainment driven day. Sunday throughout the summer we have some very strong outside promotions coming including The Colin Francis Project and History to name but a few. Very excited for a new event HOT BED by ABODE! These guys are taking the UK and Ibiza by storm and have teamed
up with Plaza Beach for some incredible events. This is my top pick for the summer!
TELL US ABOUT THE NEW PARTY CARTEL?
Cartel has been a strong brand in Dubai for some time. Crazy twisted circus branding, entertainment make it a must see event! There is nothing happening like it in Marbella currently!
WHEN'S THE BIG OPENING PARTY PLANNED FOR AND WHO IS KICK STARTING THE SUMMER SEASON FOR YOU?
We plan to open on Thursday 27th April with our now legendary Foam Party but the official Opening weekend looks like this: Kisstory, Friday 28th April; Aces, Saturday 29th April; Colin Francis Project Sunday 30th April; HOT BED by ABODE, Monday 1st May - I’m getting excited just thinking about it (haha.)
NEWS CAFÉ NEWS CAFÉ HAS BEEN AWARDED THE WINNER OF THE BEST BAR IN THE ANNUAL MARBELLA AWARDS TWO YEARS IN A ROW NOW, THAT’S QUITE AN ACCOLADE, WHY DO YOU THINK IT IS SO POPULAR?
News Cafe has everything you could ever want when coming to Puerto Banus, an idyllic location with stunning views of the port, three floors each different from the other playing incredible party music that everyone can appreciate. The staff are brilliant, friendly and there to help, oh and you will be bumping into the Ultima promo team whilst there who make everyone’s night!!

news WHAT SETS NEWS APART FROM THE OTHER BAR/CLUB VENUES?
I think it’s the only venue that 7 nights a week you can expect a full bar/club with great looking people all there to have fun with a great atmosphere. We don’t over complicate it, News Cafe has a formula that works and we stay true to it.
WHAT DJ’S OR ACTS ARE COMING TO NEWS CAFÉ?
We have introduced a few new events this summer: Thursdays, CARTEL; Fridays, BOUTIQUE EVENTS; Saturdays, OTT; Sundays, WE OWN SUNDAYS. We also have DJ Max Dehnam returning every Monday of the spray weekends. He always smashes it at News Cafe.
HAVE THERE BEEN ANY CHANGES TO THE VENUE SINCE LAST SUMMER?
News Cafe has undergone its most significant overhaul in its 25 year history. But please come and see for yourselves, you will be blown away!
WHEN ARE YOU OPENING NEWS CAFÉ?
News Cafe officially re-opens Thursday 27th April for the summer, although we are doing a soft opening for Semana Santa on the 14, 15 and 16 April.
THE BUSINESS
WE RECENTLY INTERVIEWED MINISTRY OF SOUND MARBELLA SESSIONS DJ COLIN FRANCIS WHO HAS KNOWN YOU FOR 12 YEARS AND SAYS THAT YOU ARE GENUINELY ONE OF THE NICEST GUYS IN THE BUSINESS, DO YOU THINK THAT'S WHY ULTIMA HAS BEEN SO SUCCESSFUL?
Well Ultima is a huge team effort and grows year upon year. I couldn’t do it without the support of the team and my management team. Joe Glynn, Dean Hall, Tom Roberts and my incredible designer Paul Sharples have been instrumental in the successes we have had in recent years. But I do make an effort to do right by others. It’s nice of Colin to have said those words.
YOU RUN A HUGE TEAM OF 30 PLUS WORKERS IN MARBELLA - HOW DO YOU COPE MANAGING SUCH A HUGE TEAM?
Again I can’t take credit for all of it, the managers play a key role here. But generally speaking the Ultima team becomes a family and we all want the best for Ultima and the venues we represent. Expectations are high from all the squad and this is instilled into them from the first time I interview a new member, being brutally honest of what’s expected and required from each member. But the sense of job satisfaction in this industry is hard to top and gets addictive. We love filling parties and creating a great atmosphere! The guys obviously get to enjoy their hard work in the parties also.
FOR ANYONE THINKING OF JOINING YOUR TEAM WHAT DOES IT TAKE TO BE A PART OF TEAM ULTIMA?
Primarily we look for individuals with the right attitude. Motivated to come here and work their ass off, increase their own profile, naturally sociable and friendly while remaining professional. They have to be fully invested in our goals and all areas of the promotions and marketing. We run 21 parties a week! It's non-stop! It's enjoyable work but it’s not a holiday camp!
THE MAN HIMSELF YOU BECAME A FATHER FOR THE FIRST TIME LAST YEAR. HOW IS FATHERHOOD TREATING YOU AND DO YOU THINK IT HAS CHANGED YOU AS A PERSON?
Becoming a Daddy is the most wonderful fulfilling experience of my life. Our house is full of joy and Jayden (my baby boy) is the perfect distraction when I come up for air from work. It certainly puts things into perspective and makes you look at things differently but I don’t think I would say it has changed me as a person.
ARE THERE PLANS FOR MORE "MINI SAVAGES" ANYTIME SOON?
Haha! Well it was never our plan to have more than one child but I love having a little baby hahaha so lets see. I’m already wishing Jayden to stop growing and he’s only 9 months old.
HOW DO YOU COPE RUNNING 3 VENUES?
Well unfortunately it’s not all good news. I’ve taken on a lot of responsibility and intend to smash all expectations. But this means many hours and a lot of creative hard work, so it helps that I love the job, the people and receiving feedback from friends and customers.
HOW DO YOU MAKE TIME FOR YOURSELF AND THE FAMILY?
My wife Sara is fantastic and is very supportive and understanding. Our plan is for Sara and Jayden to come and visit me most days at Plaza Beach so I think the little man is going to become our Ultima Mascot haha. Ultimately the work I put in now secures my families future so I draw from that thought.
IS IT TEMPTING TO PARTY ALL THE TIME OR DO YOU SAVE YOURSELF FOR THE ODD BIG NIGHT OUT?
Hahaha I wish I could but those days are gone. But I still get to let my hair down on occasions! Don’t worry about that!!
THANKS FOR YOUR TIME PHIL, LOOKING FORWARD TO ULTIMA CRACKING IT AGAIN THIS SUMMER SEASON! BEST OF LUCK.

Cover star DJ Colin Francis is set for a huge Marbella presence this summer. He will be playing every Friday at the brand new Mirage Nightclub in Puerto Banús in a night entitled ‘DJ Colin Francis and Friends.’ Marbella Rocks chatted exclusively to the Superstar DJ to find out all about his new projects, forthcoming albums, residencies, love life and much more. Read his no holds barred cover star interview. SO COLIN WHO HAVE YOU GOT LINED UP TO PLAY ALONGSIDE YOU IN YOUR NEW MIRAGE RESIDENCY THIS SUMMER?
I have many guests and surprises lined up for this summer!! Including MK, Kano, Tom Zanetti, Troyboi to name a few…
DOES THIS MEAN YOU WILL BE ‘SHARING’ THE DJ BOOTH?
Yes indeed… it’s all about the experience that I want the crowd to enjoy and come away from the night feeling like they have had not just a good night, but a great night.
HOW DID YOU END UP GETTING THE GIG?
The owners of Mirage got in contact with me and put a proposal to me and when I looked at it from every perspective it was a win – win for everyone.
34 MARBELLAROCKS | ISSUE 29
HAVE YOU SEEN THE PLANS FOR THE CLUB, IT SOUNDS LIKE IT WILL BE ON A PAR WITH IBIZA’S SUPERCLUBS? (185DB SOUND SYSTEM, LASER DISPLAYS AND SO ON) I have and that was another contributing factor for me taking on this venue as my first weekly residency.
WHY DID YOU CHOOSE A RESIDENCY AT MIRAGE?
I choose Mirage because not only do I love the fact that it is a brand new venue with a great location but the team that run the operation are very good and I trust in them. They have the same work ethic as myself… work hard and achieve the goals you set yourself. We are very excited about the collaboration.

YOU HAVE ALSO BEEN SELECTED TO PLAY MIRAGE’S OPENING NIGHT ON APRIL 28TH, ARE THERE ANY SURPRISES IN STORE?
YOU ALSO PRODUCE YOUR OWN TRACKS, WHAT CURRENT MATERIAL ARE YOU WORKING ON?
WILL YOU STILL BE PLAYING AT OTHER MARBELLA CLUBS AS FANS ARE USED TO CATCHING YOU AT PANGEA, TIBU AND SISU IN THE SUMMER?
WHAT WILL BE THE SOUNDTRACK TO YOUR SUMMER 2017?
That was a huge privilege to be asked and yes there are indeed. Watch this space.
Yes I will but only on champagne weekends other than that I am exclusive to Mirage.
I have some real nice tracks lined up which I can’t wait to share with everyone. Marbella Collection 2017 (and I hope yours too!)
A LOT OF OUR READERS HAVE SEEN YOU PERFORM LIVE AND HAVE COINED THE DJ COLIN FRANCIS CHANT – DOES THIS EVER GIVE YOU A BIG HEAD TO KNOW YOU HAVE YOUR OWN TUNE!? Haha!!! No of course not!! It is very flattering and it has become synonymous on and off my sets!!
WHAT KEEPS YOU GROUNDED?
My faith in God, my family and friends.
IS THERE A SPECIAL SOMEONE IN YOUR LIFE RIGHT NOW? Yeah.
WHAT DO YOU LOOK FOR IN A GIRL?
A good heart, kindness, humility, unconditional love and someone that can motivate me as much as I want to motivate and support them.
HOW DO YOU COPE WITH SUCH A GRUELLING SCHEDULE PLAYING IN CLUBS ALL OVER THE WORLD?
I’m grateful everyday that I do something that I love and am passionate about… music is my soul’s engine. Music can enhance my mood even with just one song!
WHAT DO YOU DO TO UNWIND? MARBELLA HAS ALWAYS BEEN LIKE A SECOND HOME TO YOU CAN YOU EXPLAIN WHY?
Marbella is a very special place to me for many reasons… the scene, the people, the blend of music and cultures but most of all because I feel like I was part of the reason that Marbella is recognised on the music scene via my “Marbella Sessions” and “Marbella Collection” albums with the great Ministry of Sound.
WHERE WILL YOU BE STAYING WHEN YOU’RE IN MARBELLA?
In Puerto Banus… possibly just hire a villa for the summer.
WE NOTICED SOME RECENT PRESS ABOUT A TIE IN WITH SONY MUSIC CAN YOU TELL US MORE?
Basically Sony have bought Ministry of Sound and in doing so they have fortunately made “Marbella Collection” and myself one of their main summer releases. It truly is a dream come true for me.
HOW DOES IT FEEL TO GET THE NUMBER 1 ALBUM SLOT? (YOU’VE ALREADY HAD 6!)
This is the biggest achievement so far in my career. I’m truly grateful for everyone that supported and bought the album.
IS THERE A 7th NUMBER ONE IN THE PIPELINE?
I hope I can make it a 7th… god willing of course!!!
36 MARBELLAROCKS | ISSUE 29
Spend time with my loved ones and enjoy the moment, because in future years those moments become our memories.
WHAT’S YOUR FAVOURITE THING ABOUT MARBELLA? It’s ambience.
YOU’VE PLAYED PRIVATELY FOR A WHOLE HOST OF CELEBS INCLUDING 50 CENT, NICKY MINAJ AND DRAKE. DO YOU EVER GET STAR STRUCK? Inwardly yes of course lol!! However, you keep it cool because on most occasions they become your friends.
YOU SAID IN AN INTERVIEW LAST YEAR YOU HOPED TO GET MORE INTO PRODUCTION – HAVE YOU BEEN ABLE TO DO THIS? Yes and it’s been an unbelivable journey so far… I can tap into a different side of me.
WHAT COLLABORATIONS, IF ANY, HAVE YOU GOT IN THE PIPELINE?
I don’t want to let too much out but let’s just say it ranges from legends to current artists creating waves.
WHAT ABOUT GETTING CLOSE TO YOUR DREAM OF COMPETING WITH THE LIKES OF MAJOR LAZER, CALVIN HARRIS AND GUETTA? The music being created is going to surprise some people. The above are legends in my eyes and to share a sentence with them is a start… I trust in the process and all I can do is work hard and be true to myself and those that have supported and will support me in the future.

The natural landscape of Andalucia marks this historic region of Spain as one of the most unusual and breathtaking places to visit in Europe and perhaps even the world. While we are undoubtedly spoilt for choice on places to visit on the Costa Del Sol so few residents and holidaymakers have really been able to unearth and discover the true natural beauty, geography and naturally occurring landmarks of this region. Marbella Rocks has researched and uncovered 6 of the most unusual places to visit. Are you up for crossing some of these off your list?
The Red River – Rio Tinto

Found in the Sierra Morena Mountains and flowing into the Gulf of Cádiz at Huelva is The Río Tinto. What makes this particular river special is its surreal bright red colour, created by the natural ores found in the surrounding mines of Rio Tinto. These ores of iron, copper and silver plus a host of natural minerals combine to generate the rich blood red colour. The harsh environment surrounding the mines, close to the Sierra de Aracena and Picos de Aroche Nature Reserve in the province of Huelva, has led NASA to conduct studies into the great diversity of microorganisms adapted to the extreme conditions with the aim of exploring its similarity to the planet Mars. Hence giving the bizarre landscape the nickname "Mars on Earth". So go and have your picture taken in one of the strangest locations on Earth (or Mars).

Fort Bravo Texas Hollywood
If you are a fan of the spectacular new hit TV show Westworld then why not try it out for real (minus the robots of course) at the biggest film studios of Western theme in Europe; Fort-Bravo/TexasHollywood. The American Old West set design dates from the 1960s when master director of the spaghetti westerns, Sergio Leone (A Fistful of Dollars, For a Few Dollars More, The Good, the Bad and the Ugly), discovered the amazing landscape of the region in the desert of Tabernas, Almería and started a New Wave in Hollywood which established Clint Eastwood among others as a major star. At the other end of the scale and closer to home is the abandoned purpose-built set of the 1993 flop BBC1 TV show Eldorado. Preserved by the dry mountain air and heat is the collection of deserted whitewashed buildings located in a pine forest just 10 miles north-east of Marbella near Coín. Due to its pretty poor acting and initially dull storylines it was axed after one year and ended up costing the UK taxpayers more than £10 million in licence fees. A long-running campaign to bring the Costa del Sol set soap back means Eldorado is more famous now than it was back then.

Caves of Nerja
In 1959, a group of five friends squeezed through a narrow sinkhole and rediscovered the vast cave system of Cueva de Nerja (skeletal remains found in the caverns indicate they were first discovered and inhabited from approximately 25,000 BC up until the Bronze Age - more than 20,000 years later). If anyone’s seen the horror movie The Descent this scenario will indeed send chills down your spine! The cavernous chambers of Nerja stretch for more than 5km (3.1miles) and cover more than 35,484 m2. Another entrance was soon discovered and a manmade one added in 1960 which allows easy access to visitors today. The caves are one of Spain’s most popular and spectacular tourist attractions and are so large one cavern which forms a natural amphitheatre holds concerts throughout the year attracting major stars to perform. Divided into Nerja 1 and Nerja 2 – Nerja 1 comprises the areas open to the public, including the Show Galleries with easy access by stairs. Nerja 2 which has restricted access to the public includes the Upper Gallery and New Gallery, discovered in 1960 and 1969 respectively.

Setenil de las Bodegas
as l e d il n e t n s a g Se e d Bo
In the North-west of Ronda is the tiny town of Setenil de las Bodegas which is literally built into the rock of the mountain overhanging the Rio Trejo. Only a brave few of the 3,000 population inhabit the white houses built under the vast outcrop, while other nearby houses sport rock roofs and some even have olive groves growing on them. The small town also hosts a small selection of bars and restaurants and food shops ranked as some of the best in the region, offering local specialities of chorizo, olive oil and wines. The town’s name Setenil de las Bodegas reflects its rich history; setenil, from the Latin words septem nihil – ‘seven times no’, refers to the seven times the Catholic rulers tried to take back the territory from the Moors and bodegas, meaning ‘warehouse’ in Spanish refers to the use of the cool areas under the rock as a large storerooms for all kinds of local produce.

Cave Homes
s e m o H e v a C
If you like the idea of living in a cave home then visiting Spain’s cave country in the Altiplano de Granada region - a mountainous region of northern Andalucía, between the Sierra Nevada and the Sierra de Castril – where entire villages are carved out of the rock would be the best place to start. They were created by the unique geology of the area – a turbulent past of rock erupting from sediment of the prehistoric era. Steeped in history and breathaking to visit. Originally inhabited by the Moors but more recently carved by peasant farmworkers in the 19th Century they are as much sought after today with thousands of new modern day cavedwellers in the Granada region alone due to them being pleasantly cool in the summer and warm in the winter.
Torcal
You could be mistaken for thinking you are on the moon as the lunar landscape of the Sierra del Torcal mountain range just 13km south of Antequera resembles just that. The marine corridor of limestone was formed in the Mesozoic Age more than 150 million years under the giant Tethys Ocean then exploded upwards some 1,300 metres to create the flat-lying rock formations.
Torcal These naturally soft porous sedimentary rocks over time developed a series of fractures, cracks and faults at right-angles (generally NW-SE and NE-SW) which then became rivers and through the process of dissolution eroded the softer rock, leaving the visibly striking Karst topography we see today. Many of the strange rock shapes resemble and have been named after everyday objects, such as the Sphinx, the Jug, the Camel and the Screw.

Antequera Dolmens Site
Located just outside Antequera sit three 5,000-year-old burial chambers known as dolmens; Menga (the largest in Europe), Viera and the beehive tomb El Romeral (located in the Torcal region). They are regarded as the largest and most complete megalithic structures in Europe. The dolmens site in 2016 was declared Andalucía’s seventh (sixth exclusive) World Heritage Site. The huge chambers were supposedly built by farmers who lived during the Neolithic period and Copper Age from 5,000 to 2,200BC. The largest, Menga Dolmen is nearly 30m long and its largest upright stone weighs 180 tonnes (the heaviest stone at Stonehenge weighs 23 tonnes). Ninety-five percent of the world’s dolmens alignment is to the southeast for the solstice but Menga aligns north-east and uniquely to a natural landmark, the mountain of Peña de los Enamorados. By appointment a small number of visitors are able to witness this event each year.

with Michael Campbell The highlight of the golf year starts with the annual Masters Tournament in Augusta on April 6-9. The US Masters is the championship for champions and golf FANS across the globe are transfixed to their screens for 4 days waiting to see who will take the coveted prize. Sleepless nights tuning into American TV schedules is as disrupting as the 400m mountain Par 3 hole at Legend. Wives/Golf Widows mourn the loss of their husbands and children are told ‘Not to talk to Daddy’ till Monday. Understandably we hear you golfers say. But who will win? Exactly. Who better to give you the lowdown on the main contenders and the inside scoop than golfing legend and US Open winner Michael Campbell, who scooped the biggest prize in golf history shortly after winning the 2005 US Open Trophy, the HSBC World Match Play Championship netting a cool £1,000,000 in the same year. He has also graced the tricky Augusta greens 10 times so knows the highs and lows of the world famous competition.
WHO IN YOUR OPINION ARE THE MAIN CONTENDERS FOR THIS YEAR’S MASTERS?
Rory McIIroy in my opinion is one of the main contenders. After an injury scare earlier in the year he has shown great form and is now fully fit to take on the challenging Augusta layout to complete his grand slam. Henrik Stenson is also one of my favourites to don the green jacket. He’s a powerful player and has an incredible short game, which is a wonderful combination if you want to play well that week.

HOW DO YOU THINK THE REIGNING BRIT CHAMPION DANNY WILLETT WILL DO THIS YEAR?
Danny has struggled with his game since he won last year and returning to the US Masters as the defending champion has that added pressure to perform well. But going back to Augusta and feeding off the memories and affirmations from 2016 will hopefully rekindle that motivation to play well again.
DUSTIN JOHNSTON IS CURRENTLY NUMBER ONE, DO YOU THINK HE STANDS A GOOD CHANCE?
Absolutely, Dustin Johnson is the full package. He has the firepower, deadly touch around the greens and is full of confidence after his recent win. He has shown great form going into Augusta this year after his most recent win in the World Championship in Mexico and has the qualities and repertoire of golf shots to win his second major.
crowds, the history and the drama that unfolds on the back nine on the Sunday afternoon that makes the atmosphere so special. The only way to describe the speed of the greens at Augusta, for example: if you imagine putting down the bonnet of your car and trying to stop the ball from rolling. Also throw into the equation the undulation and slope of the greens, makes it very difficult.
WHAT'S YOUR MOST FAVOURITE MEMORY OF AUGUSTA?
My first Augusta appearance was in 1996 and I was drawn in the first round with 6-time winner Jack Nicklaus. The crowds were incredible and the atmosphere was electric, it was a lifetime experience that will be forever embedded into my memory bank.
WHAT WAS IT LIKE TO DRIVE DOWN MAGNOLIA LANE FOR THE FIRST TIME?
The most famous piece of road in world golf. I made my maiden trip down Magnolia lane in 1996 in my brand new US Masters player’s car. It was so surreal and breathtaking at the same time.
THERE ARE 20 NATIONALITIES IN THE FIELD THIS YEAR. DO YOU THINK HAVING A DIVERSE MIX OF NATIONALITIES MAKES THE MASTERS MORE INTERESTING?
Yes definitely. This will generate more of a global interest all around the world through the TV coverage, so diversity is very important to help grow the game and encourage new players to take up this wonderful sport.
DO YOU MISS THE ATMOSPHERE OF MASTERS WEEK AND IN PARTICULAR THE CHALLENGE OF THE AUGUSTA GREENS?
I’ve been fortunate to play the US Masters on 10 occasions and loved every minute. It’s the combination of the course,

features WHAT CHARACTERISTICS DO YOU NEED TO HAVE WHEN PLAYING AUGUSTA? Patience, confidence, resilience and self-belief.
IF YOU WERE TO DESCRIBE THE TRICKY 12TH TEE SHOT IN 1 WORD, WHAT WOULD IT BE? Challenging.
IF YOU COULD, WOULD YOU TRADE YOUR US OPEN TROPHY FOR THE FAMOUS GREEN JACKET?
No, I’m happy with my US Open trophy but I did ask my good friend Darren Clarke if we could swap for a year the Claret jug (The Open Championship) he won in 2011.
IF YOU HAD WON THE JACKET, WHAT WOULD YOUR MENU HAVE BEEN FOR THE CHAMPIONS DINNER THE FOLLOWING YEAR?
Being a Maori from New Zealand I would cook a traditional dinner from home called a Hangi. It involves digging a pit in the ground, heating stones in the pit with a large fire, placing baskets of food on top of the stones, and covering everything with earth for several hours before uncovering the Hangi.
WHAT IS THE PRESSURE LIKE TO BE A PRO GOLFER AND COMPETE IN FRONT OF MILLIONS OF VIEWERS?
Seeing TV cameras around you for the first time can be very daunting, unsettling and uncomfortable but over time you become accustomed to your new surroundings.
HOW DO YOU FIND THE GOLF IN MARBELLA?
I love the abundance and diversity of golf courses in the Marbella region. It caters for all golfers whether you’re a beginner or a professional golfer.
DO YOU STILL PLAY REGULARLY?
After retiring 3 years ago I didn’t touch a golf club for 18 months, it was something I had to do to get away from the game for a while. But now I have the intention to play the seniors tour in 2 years time so I will definitely play more frequently and build up my work ethic to start playing competitively in 2019.
WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE GOLF COURSE HERE?
Alferini golf course at the Villa Padierna Palace Hotel.
CAN YOU TELL US MORE ABOUT THE MICHAEL CAMPBELL GOLF ACADEMY BASED IN MARBELLA?
It all started with a conversation with Jack Nicklaus after I won the US Open in 2005. He simply said to me ‘Michael, congratulations for your first major win, now you have the responsibility to grow and nurture this game.’ This project, my first academy is something I always wanted to do after that conversation. The game has given me so much and it’s a privilege to be able to give back to the game in this way, helping people learn to play and enjoy this great game from anyone who wants to slash their handicaps to young, aspiring professional golfers. We work holistically with each client ranging from lessons, club fitting, course management, and a personalised gym programme. The academy is a platform for me to pass on my knowledge and experiences to anyone who wants to learn.
HOW DO YOU KEEP YOUR COOL UNDER THE CIRCUMSTANCES? WHAT’S THE BEST ADVICE YOU CAN GIVE TO ANY YOUNG It’s all about trusting your processors and having the inner GOLFERS OUT THERE HOPING TO TURN PRO? belief that the preparation leads to confidence. The most powerful tip I can give anyone any one is to be in the present time and focus on the NOW.
ORIGINALLY FROM NEW ZEALAND, WHAT MADE YOU DECIDE TO LIVE IN MARBELLA OF ALL THE PLACES IN THE WORLD?
Before living in Marbella we lived in Switzerland but had to move. I wanted to stay in Europe because I was still playing on the European tour. We’ve been to Costa Del Sol a few times and liked the weather, culture and access to numerous golf facilities that are available here.

Professional golf is one the toughest careers you could ever consider pursuing. There’s no short cut to success but if you devote 10,000 hours to master the craft of golf, trust your instincts and the information you are given; the chances increase tenfold. Golf is a solitary sport and if you’re seriously deciding to turn professional, you are likely to understand how much time it requires. In addition to the money put into the sport, golf can drain your time. It takes a lot time out of your life to practise and travel from various tournaments so you may have to sacrifice time with family and freinds, which in some cases like mine, would be leaving your home country to fulfil your dreams.

Here are just a handful of looks that I will be right up your runway…
TREND 1: RELAXED RED A statement red lip is always in style in my opinion. Obviously nothing speaks louder than a woman's words, but a juicy shade of red smothered across our puckers comes pretty damn close if you ask me. According to this year’s catwalks, the way to wear our 50 shades of rouge in 2017 is ALONE!! Basically the runway bowed down to naked skin, natural brows and minimal shadow…designers added a striking red lip to beautiful blank canvases which exploded into a winning combination.
“A fresh face with a red lip is timeless. It's super-modern and relaxed but very chic” Francis NARS GET THE LOOK Pucker Up
Tom Ford Lip Colour in Cherry Lush, (true blue-based vibrant red shade with hints of pink) Available At Tomford.com €49

MAC Cosmetics Lipstick in Ruby Woo, (bright cherry colour with a cooling hint of blue) Available At El Corte Ingles €20
Cheap Thrills
Revlon Super Lustrous Lipstick in Love That Red (cherry red with a cool touch of pink) Available At Ulta.com €8
TREND 3: GLITTERED ALL OVER
The Lids of Anna Sui’s show flaunted gorgeous washes of pink
TREND 2: COLOUR WASH EYES
Victoria Beckham as always was ahead of the game, her polished models stepped out in toneddown shades of khaki and blue.
Eye make-up was as vibrant and as flawless as ever this season. No colour was off limits, the bolder, the better. Designers took a step back in time and awakened the 80’s with vivid wet look shades blended to perfection. Dewy lids and smouldering shades splashed down the catwalk upon some of the world’s most beautiful faces. I predict this watercolour trend will be around for more than just a blink of an eye. Find your inner artist and paint your way to exquisite eyes.
My favourite look came from Tadashi Shoji, deep rose gold blended effortlessly around the eyes. Simple, effective and super easy to recreate.
Dramatic glitter lips dazzled down the catwalk. During the Fendi and DKNY shows, glitter cuticles popped up at Rodarte and glitter eyeshadow arrived with a bang on the Marc Jacobs runway. Gone are the years of only pulling out your special sparkle for New Years… now, it seems perfectly acceptable to rock up to the office with a glitter eyebrow or two. How Fabulous!!!!
GET THE LOOK I recommend trying the glittertastic palettes from Glitters Eyes. They come in every shade imaginable and are great paired with their metallic eyeshadow range. Available at www.glittereyes. com also available in salon at Golden Tarts.
READ MY LIPS So...when striving for the perfect pout, not all of us get off to the best start. Forgetting to keep your puckers healthy may just be the reason your lips don't look quite as juicy as Angelina Jolie's. In order to get the most out of your lipstick, you have to make sure your lips are smooth and well taken care of from the get go. There’s no need to purchase expensive lip scrubs and designer exfoliators, instead head to the kitchen and cook up a perfect pout potion all of your own. Give this a go…. Measure together equal parts of brown sugar, olive oil and vanilla extract. Gently massage on your lips for a couple of minutes, then wipe off with a damp cotton pad and whallahhhhh irresistible lips!!!

very man knows, that every woman deep down wants an Adonis. The Greek God of beauty and desire, his beauty personified in his long lean muscles and chiselled abs. To this day it still stands, doesn’t it? Well why wouldn´t it?! So us men, spend hours out of our weeks trying to become just that, an Adonis because that is what women want. Or so we think! Men have a perception that the bigger the better (take that whichever way you want!) and we strive to have the biggest muscles, the biggest wallets, the biggest cars… the list goes on. My personal goal is to have bigger muscles and I would be lying if there wasn’t some extrinsic motivation in that. Muscles aren´t just for me, of course, I want other people to think I have a good body. 2017 is upon us and I was doing my annual (or annually unsuccessful) search of the body I want! Because indirectly it is also the body that women want. With a keen interest in Men´s Physique, I have been following the progress of now one of the best in the world, Ryan Terry, British Pro Athlete. For me, he has the perfect combination of size, muscle and symmetry. I showed my girlfriend the picture and she wasn’t impressed. I thought she is obviously just saying that to make me happy as he has a much better body than me! But she kept telling me it was too much. Too big, too ripped and not human! Whilst impressed by his physique and dedication to creating and sculpting an almost near perfect body she really didn´t like the physique and could list me others she preferred. The names, to my surprise were of guys with not great bodies, or so in my eyes!
Thus, I thought I would try and delve into the alien world that is women and try to understand what women actually want. The experiment began, and no it was not the most scientific and reliable experiment in the world, but it gained a huge number of responses and some great insights into what women want from a male physique. I used Facebook as my starting point, found 6 famous men’s torso´s that ranged from athletes, to singers to presenters and I opened up the debate.
WOMEN, WHAT DO YOU WANT!? I asked the women of Facebook to choose which of the 6 physiques were to them, most attractive. Within 24 hours I had over 200 comments and a similar amount of answers! Who knew half naked men would get so much attention?! The 6 bodies ranged from big bodybuilders to lean bodies and one larger than life candidate as you can see. Which is your favourite?? To me, the results were astounding. The women of Marbella were split between Torso B and Torso D. Results of the body research can be seen on here. Despite this quite shallow test, that was a lot of fun and taken in good spirit by everyone. I then started to receive a few private messages. In general, they firstly thanked me for brightening their day but more importantly, the reasoning behind their decisions and the fact I had missed a body type. The loving women of Marbella time and time again wrote to me explaining, despite A and C being impressive, “It wasn’t real”…. “It was too much”….”There was nothing to grab hold of” and so on and so forth. And then I had one response from a good friend, who wanted to place her husband’s photo forward. She explained she loved his body because he was manly, he has muscle but he also enjoys, food, life and carries a bit extra rather than the 5 of the 6 photos above.
This summed up why I think Torso D ended up taking the crown of “What Women Want.” I can tell you that D is famous South African Rugby Player Craig Burden. Can you guess the other 5 famous bodies? (Answers at the bottom of the page). And whilst he is a professional athlete and in rather good shape, his body fat is around 10-12% which is more than achievable for male gym enthusiasts. Burden, spends a lot of time in the gym and performs lots of big power exercises and compound exercises to get this torso whilst eating a whopping 5,000 calories per day, including a high percentage of carbs in his diet. (Or at least compared to many gym goers who diet and limit carb intake.) Below is a typical day in the life of Burden in the gym! If you want to look like the body which is “WHAT WOMEN WANT!” why not give it a go, or ladies if you want your partner to look like the winner, why not leave this page open near your partner ;)

RESTAURANT REVIEW
JACKS SMOKEHOUSE
P
opular frontline venue Jacks has transformed into the newly named and modernised Jacks Smokehouse. The design and decor are reminiscent of a cool New York bar/restaurant and for those that did not know about Jacks before – you definitely will now. Original smoked meats and cool cocktails, you won’t be able to walk through Puerto Banus now without having a look (and a quick bite or thirst quencher).
SOMETHING FOR EVERYONE
As soon as you walk in you are greeted by friendly and welcoming staff making you feel instantly at home. It’s good to visit any time of the day too. Stop off after a morning walk on the beach where you can enjoy a coffee or delicious breakfast or just pop in and enjoy the afternoon sun on the upstairs terrace overlooking the beautiful port with a fruity cocktail or their devine lunch menu. Jacks is also a good place for families or in the evening to enjoy dinner and drinks with your friends. Plus there is a big screen TV for sports fans located downstairs or the option of a more quiet and romantic evening upstairs for couples. Jacks is also a big restaurant so with its large space you will never feel crowded and while I must say many restaurants have music, Jacks played a really great selection of current chart and old classics, which topped off the amazing atmosphere of the night.

gastronomy TRIED AND TESTED
So now onto the food which I could happily sum up in one word, Incredible. The Chargrilled Lamb Loin was one of the main dishes we tried and it was so succulent the lamb just melted in your mouth, together with the creaminess of the butter mash, crunchy green beans and herb infused sauce we were literally scraping plates and would come back for this dish alone! We also tried Jacks 40 Day Dry-Aged Galician Tomahawk Steak. I literally had to say “Wow” out loud when this came to the table. The steak was huge and presented beautifully with parmesan fries, a side salad and a pot of creamy peppercorn sauce. I literally felt like I’d died and gone to steak heaven. If the steak looked impressive the taste bowled me over even more. It was cooked medium rare to perfection and was so tender I didn’t actually need my steak knife to glide through it or the peppercorn side sauce for added flavour. (Although it was so tasty I had to dip my fries in it!) This meal is a definite ‘must try’ when you head to Jacks. Probably straight after reading this review, its making your mouth water that much! On the recommendation of the waiter we went for a mid-priced Spanish red wine that perfectly complimented our Lamb and Steak main courses. Unlike a sommelier in stuffier reviews we have done he offered great advice, was fun to talk to and kept our glasses topped up all evening. We ended the meal with a fantastic taster selection of desserts, my favourite being the tangy Key Lime Pie. It was the perfect way to end a heavy meaty meal with its citrus taste, instantly refreshing and light enough not to fill you up too much. However, we have to recommend the Warm Chocolate Brownie to all you chocolate lovers out there. The spongy and soft melted chocolate together with the whipped chocolate cream is just a chocolate dream. And for all you peanut butter fans the Oreo and Peanut Butter Cheesecake is a great twist on a classic dessert. The Oreo cookie base was delicious and the peanut butter cheesecake filling was flight and fluffy and perfectly offset the flavours of the cookie. I have to say it was not my favourite of the 3 but it would be a great option to choose with afternoon coffee as I found it a little heavy after a big meal. Ending the night we decided to have a taste of the amazing cocktails that everyone around us was ordering. We went for a classic Mojito which was tasty and beautifully presented. Plus, we had to try the highly recommended Jacks Raspberry Daiquiri. The presentation was beautiful and the taste of the cocktail was so refreshing with a raspberry ice-cream topping made this drink really special.
IN SUMMARY
All in all an amazing experience from start to finish. I will definitely go back and I can wholeheartedly recommend Jacks Smokehouse. Great food, great atmosphere and great service.

ARTIST PROFILE JACKSON POLLOCK
One of the most famous abstract expressionist artists of all time, US artist Jackson Pollock was famous for his unique style of drip painting. Born in 1912, Jackson enjoyed considerable fame and notoriety before his death in a car accident in 1956. He was noted to suffer from alcoholism. Four months after his death, Pollock was given a memorial retrospective exhibition at the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in New York City. A larger, more comprehensive exhibition of his work was held there in 1967. In 1998 and 1999, his work was honoured with large-scale retrospective exhibitions at MoMA and at The Tate in London.
DRIP PERIOD
Pollock's most famous paintings were made during the Drip Period between 1947 and 1950. He rocketed to fame following a 1949 four-page spread in Life magazine that asked, "Is he the greatest living painter in the United States?" At the peak of his fame, Pollock who most say actually invented the drip style abruptly abandoned the technique to move onto monochrome pourings.

BLACK POURINGS
Pollock's work after 1951 was darker in colour, including a collection painted in black and white. These paintings have been referred to as his Black Pourings and when he exhibited them at the Betty Parsons Gallery in New York none of them sold. The departure from his earlier style wasn't what his collectors wanted. These works show Pollock attempting to find a balance between abstraction and depictions of the figure.
FIGURATIVE PAINTINGS
He later returned to using colour and continued with figurative elements. During this period, Pollock had moved to the Sidney Janis Gallery a more commercial gallery; the demand for his work from collectors was great. An alcoholic
from an early age it is believed this pressure and demand for his work deepened his dependency. His untimely death in 1956 was due to a car accident whilst he was under the influence.
His work brought together elements of cubism, surrealism and impressionism - and transcended them all.

Opposites attract and expect the unexpected this month, Aries. It may be a good idea not to plan too far ahead - or get too attached to those plans for that matter. There’s a tendency for things to go array. However, if that is what happens, fear not. Chances are there’s a purpose to this which you cannot yet see - most possibly designed to put you into the path of something (or someone) better. When it comes to love, if you think you have a ‘type’ - prepare to throw those ideas out of the window. Someone could just swoop in who breaks every rule you thought you had when it comes to choosing a mate, and capture your heart anyway. It’s a month for flying by the seat of those designer pants and heading in whatever direction love or just fate, wants to take you. Enjoy the ride. It may be bumpy but that’s what gives you a fresh outlook on life and love.
Old friends, past haunts and dreams you left by the wayside could all make a reappearance now. If they do, take a reality check before leaping back into anything. Does it, or they, seem new to you on some level or does it all seem oh-so-familiar? If it’s the latter then perhaps you are better off saying ‘Hi & good-bye’ for good now and holding out for something new. If however it all seems fresh and exciting once again, then by all means stick your toe back in those proverbial karmic waters. An old dream could resurface with new relevance as well. You could ask yourself why you gave up on it in the first place? Who or what made you feel it was out of your reach? This time don’t hesitate in heading for or even grasping that prize. This April could just be about second chances - and maybe those that are second time around.
116 MARBELLAROCKS | ISSUE 29
Someone could show you that you won’t get anywhere this month - or any other time for that matter, by being anything other than yourself, Gemini. It’s time to be bold and a little daring - with no apologies and to have faith in those ideas - no matter how ‘out there’ they may appear to others. Whoever said being a visionary was easy? Understand that whether it is in business or in romance, very often people don’t know what they want until they see it. And they want you - just the way you are. So, be authentic and don’t imitate others which is way too much like hard work in any case. Someone, somewhere whether it is your next boss, client or lover wants the real deal. You’re going to be shown how not claiming your true self holds you back from what you’re seeking. Whoever points this out to you deserves your almighty thanks, be sure to do so.
People are going to show you their true colours this month and the question is: do you like what you see? Usually tolerant to a fault, you won’t suffer fools gladly now and woe betide the person in whom you have placed your trust, who betrays this. If someone disappoints you on some level, be prepared for a parting of ways. Your intuition may also be telling you something is not right and if so, pay close attention and act if necessary. You could be set on uncovering the truth behind something that has been going on for quite some time. Avoid anyone who seems to attract drama or have problems with alcohol or drugs as if you are not careful they could drag you down with them. It’s a good time to be planning ahead and thinking about what you want to achieve in the coming year - but keep these plans to yourself for now. Some people just love raining on other’s dreams. Protect yours this month.
A bit like Bilbo Baggins you could be faced with an unexpected journey this April. Last minute travel - for business or pleasure could see you grabbing your passport and heading out of the door. Stay flexible this month as there are many opportunities that could cross your path if you do. The key to taking advantage of them is to remain adaptable and also to bear in mind that opportunity does not always look the way you thought it would. If you’ve been hoping for a change from routine or the status quo, then this month could certainly provide that. An old lover could possibly resurface too as could money you are owed or a payout you have been waiting for. If it is the former, look at how taking up with them again enhances your life in all areas - or not as the case may be. Use any money coming your way to invest in yourself professionally or in your long term future. It’s all about how anything that returns enhances your status or pushes those buttons.
Love just takes on a dreamy, ‘Back to the Future’ quality or else you may feel that a lover is literally out of this world! Ensure you do keep both practical Virgo feet on the ground if you don’t want to discover further down the line that new passion’s footsies are made of clay. Allow things to develop slowly with someone new and if they seem just a little bit too keen to go all in too fast and too soon, this may be your cue to back off for a bit unless all you’re after is a fling right now. Bosses may throw a curve-ball at you just when you thought you had a job under control, and accepting a certain amount of change this month may be essential for your future professional success. Be prepared to accept extra responsibility if it is offered as well as having to rework something you thought was done and dusted if necessary. You’re about to embark on a new cycle of expansion and this month is preparing you for that. Get ready for big things.

By now you may just have had enough with looking backwards and seeing just where you went wrong in the past. Don’t continue to dwell there once you have put things into perspective however. There is a reason for everything and if you are focussed on lost opportunities or how you could have done things differently, then use this information so that you don’t repeat the same mistakes again. And then move on. A certain amount of retrospection is necessary for growth and this is what you are being prepared for. Focus on your successes and what worked rather than what didn’t and fine-tune your future plans. A feel good place to begin this is with an image update if you think one is needed - especially if you have been feeling a little stale. A new you is emerging and along with this could be a new relationship if you’ve been flying solo of late as well as recognition for that long professional haul too. Rewards are on their way. Don’t look back.
Anyone who knows anything about your sign should know that there’s always so much going on below the surface with a Scorpio. Superficial just does not cut it with you - at least not over the long term. This month you may not be inclined to share those innermost thoughts, wishes and dreams unless you truly believe someone is on the same, oh-so-deep and resonant, wavelength as you. If you’re harbouring a secret passion or crush, you may be torn between revealing all to the object of your affections or else continuing to submerge yourself in all that longing. Be careful to who you confess those confidences as they may not keep them. If in doubt, go deeper and keep your thoughts to yourself. Above all, keep everything except those feelings above board now. People’s true motivations will come to light during this period and if you have anything clandestine to hide, be prepared for it to be turfed out of the closet for all to see. What this month may teach you is that your true soulmate is yourself. This month sees you craving a deeper connection - perhaps with yourself Scorpio, which isn’t a bad thing.
Travelling to familiar places or catching up with old friends could be the start of something new for you this month, Sag. If you do, unexpected opportunities, a chance to shine or even unlooked for romance could be just some of the benefits winging their way to you. Those of you working in IT, television, technology, the internet or even astrology should dust off those ambitions and crazy, blue sky thinking and do something with those ideas now. It’s time to make a splash in more ways than one. Your life is undergoing a revolution on some level and the people you meet this April could be part of this. One way or another they are destined to influence your future. The more unusual the people you encounter, the more you need to pay attention - especially if they are from a very different social circle, background, ethnicity or profession to those you normally mix with. Make an effort to go out and meet as many new people as you possibly can now - especially if you want your change in your life.
Deep inner transformations result in changes in your outer world now, Capricorn. April could bring unexpected financial shifts and at times you may feel you are riding a money rollercoaster. Hang on to the knowledge that you are in control and you could just come out of it ahead even if faced with a few unexpected expenses. A change in your thinking or attitude is what brings about the results you are hoping for. Perhaps this is the ability to just accept yourself for who you are, warts and all, and in doing so, you become more accepting of others in turn. This new open-mindedness acts as a powerful attraction magnet, bringing what you want into your orbit as if by magic. Whether it is a new lover with exciting potential or that career break you’ve been striving for, suddenly you see it all doesn’t have to be hard work - and in fact it shouldn’t be. This month is all about having faith in a higher power and that when you are ready, the rewards will come in abundance.
Is it love or lust, Aquarius? One of the two at first sight is entirely possible this April or if you’re lucky that double jeopardy person who ignites both. Flings could get flung as a result. It may not necessarily last but you will enjoy it while it does. At the very least you should enjoy at least one opportunity and maybe more, to flex those flirtation muscles. You can also use this reawakened gift to charm in your professional life as your powers to charm and persuade enable you to be seen as someone others want to work or do business with. If you have had a professional refusal in the past - either been knocked back for a job, lost a pitch or sale, try approaching again. You may be pleasantly surprised at the outcome the second time around. Your confidence should be at an all-time high this month in almost every area so make the most of it. And if you don’t seek out romance or opportunity, expect it to come looking for you. There’s no way you can stay under the radar this April.
Reconnecting with an old love or just something you loved to do could have your heart beating a little bit faster this April. If passion for someone or even something, has been absent of late, then expect it to come flooding back in. Understand that happiness, romance and even good times are spiritual experiences in their own right, so why should you abstain or even deny yourself these? Do what you love. However, guard against getting lost in those dreams and failing to do anything about making them a reality. Yes, the creative process begins with a dream but unless we take action, that’s all it will ever be. You have your dreams for a reason however - and that is for them to come true. But only one person can make that happen and that’s you. Look closely at what practical steps need to be taken and even if it looks daunting, break it down into steps. When you take the first one you’ll reclaim whatever has been missing. Welcome back passion, this April. It's been lacking for a while so now will be a more welcome time than ever.

Diamonds & Pearls Diamonds and Pearls Events Management is bringing top concerts and events to the Costa Del Sol. With a whole host of top local and international acts about to star in a venue near you, we caught up with directors Louise Gibson and Adele Blaney to find out more about the company, their concerts and a bit about the talented duo themselves. WHAT MADE YOU DECIDE TO START DIAMONDS & PEARLS? We had been discussing setting up an events company for over a year. In 2016 we decided to bite the bullet as it seemed like the perfect time for us both. Since then the business is going from strength to strength with very exciting events coming up in 2017 and 2018. WHAT WAS YOUR BACKGROUND? We have both been performers in the past and have an array of experience both performing extensively in the UK and Europe. Adele is a music teacher and has been for the past 17 years. Collectively our experience in the entertainment industry has found us with the perfect combination of personalities and drive to succeed. YOU ARE CURRENTLY WORKING ON A GREAT NEW MUSICAL INITIATIVE CALLED RISING STARS WITH SINGER LEMAR, WHAT IS IT ALL ABOUT? The rising stars is one part of our business which is growing rapidly. We are both very excited about the future of our concept. We are looking for young singer/songwriters aged between 14 - 18 to audition in front of our top judging panel on 23rd April, the successful performers will get a 2 year contract and get the chance to produce their own songs with our producer Terry Shaughnessy and then showcase these at our Rising Stars concert with Lemar in June. Two of our Stars have just released their debut singles: Amalia - Walking in the Rain and Paris - Cold heart, both of which are available to buy on iTunes, Google Play and Spotify. HOW CAN OUR READERS GET INVOLVED? Interested applicants need to send us an MP3 of either their original track or a cover to info@ diamondsandpearlseventsmanagement.com if you do not have a full written song you can still apply as long as you have the ambition to songwrite and are aged between 14 - 18. We have received some amazingly talented entries so far and are very excited about the auditions.
CAN YOU TELL US MORE ABOUT DIAMONDS & PEARLS UPCOMING SUMMER CONCERTS? We have many different events coming up one of which is “An Evening With” Rugby Hero Matt Dawson. The evening will give you the chance to ask Matt your questions about his Famous Rugby career and involvement with Masterchef and Strictly Come Dancing, Matt will also be hosting our charity auction. The evening will include a gala dinner include fantastic live entertainment. In April the fantastic Andrew Derbyshire (pictured above) will be performing at the luxurious Valparaiso restaurant in Mijas. In June we host the incredible Four D´s concert which is guaranteed to be a night not to be missed! IS THERE ONE IN PARTICULAR YOU’RE LOOKING FORWARD TO? We are looking forward to them all, in particular our Rising Stars concert with Lemar. Lemar is an amazing performer and it's a huge opportunity for our young talented singers to showcase their work on stage with him. How do you source the talent for Diamonds & Pearls concerts and events? We work directly with various managers/ agents in the UK and have an incredible team behind us.
shows! Paris and Amalia will be ambassadors for the showcase concert in June with Lemar and will both be performing their singles along with our new ´Rising Stars´ who will be announced after our auditions in April. IF YOU COULD BRING ANY FAMOUS POP STAR TO SPAIN, WHO WOULD IT BE AND WHY? This is a funny subject as we both have a varied taste in music...one minute it’s Stevie Wonder, the next it’s Anastacia. Louise's dream is to meet Tina Turner or Van Morrison and Adele´s would be Paul Weller or Elvis - but unfortunately he left the building a while ago! IF YOU COULD ONLY TAKE THREE THINGS TO A DESERT ISLAND, WHAT WOULD THEY BE? An iPod for music, cheese and wine…can we choose a boat?! BEST ADVICE EVER GIVEN? From one of the most influential businessmen we have met to date “Don't let the words of jealous people hold you down, rise above and keep fighting for what you believe.” BEST CHARACTER TRAIT? Our openness and drive to succeed. We have an amazing bond which is hard to find, when either one of us is under pressure, the other picks up the pieces.
DO YOU EVER GET STAR STRUCK BRUSHING SHOULDERS WITH CELEBS? When we met Matt Dawson in the UK for our upcoming event, we were excited but also anxious about meeting him. He was in fact a real gentleman and we are very excited to be working with him.
WHAT DO YOU DO TO RELAX? We normally enjoy spending time with our children and eating out!
LOUISE, YOUR DAUGHTER PARIS IS AN EXTREMELY TALENTED SINGER, IS SHE MAKING ANY APPEARANCES ON THE COSTA DEL SOL THIS SUMMER? Paris has just been put through to the next stage of X Factor auditions so we have our fingers crossed for her. We are counting on your votes if she gets through to the live
