TWIN TOWN

It’s double trouble in Tinseltown. Beyoncé and Jay Z, George Clooney and Amal and Madonna are expecting or in Madge’s case adopting twins. Ever the trendsetter, Beyonce was the first to announce her new additions at the beginning of February and took to the stage at the Grammy’s in this rather revealing chainmail outfit proudly displaying her bump 2 weeks later. Meanwhile Matthew Knowles, Bey’s father, dropped the biggest hint to date when discussing Blue Ivy’s response to the news that mummy was pregnant. “Blue is gonna have brothers and sisters. She is already excited.” Afterwards, Matthew seemed to realise his interview mistake, attempting to backtrack from his comment claiming that “you have to say both because I don’t know if it’s either,” but we’re taking this accidental tip off as evidence that Beyonce is expecting a boy and a girl. With trouble brewing in the past for Bey and Jay Z this news couldn’t come at a better time for the RnB duo. Material girl Madonna got in on the action less than a week after the Bey-bies were announced revealing she is adopting twin girls from Malawi. The 4-year-girls named Stella and Esther will be relocating to Hollywood shortly, Madonna’s camp revealed that the high court granted the adoption order at the beginning of the month. Madonna has previously adopted two Malawian

children, David Banda in 2006 and Mercy James in 2009 and is also mother to Lourdes, 20, from her relationship with personal trainer Carlos Leon and Rocco,16, by director Guy Ritchie. George Clooney who once stated that he would “never get married” and “never have kids” is now definitely eating his words. After marrying human rights lawyer Amal in a lavish wedding in Venice in 2014, the Clooney’s have just revealed they are expecting twins. Matt Damon, Clooney’s best friend told Entertainment Tonight that his buddy told him the news while they were filming a movie in the fall, and that Amal, 39, was eight weeks pregnant at the time. “I'm like, 'Are you out of your mind? Don't tell anybody else, don't tell anybody else, I mean, don't you know the 12-week rule?' Of course he doesn't,” Damon said, laughing. "Then four weeks later, 'I'm like, 'We're good right, we're good,” so I'm thrilled for him. They are going to be awesome parents, those kids are lucky.”

LADY GAGA BITES BACK Lady Gaga’s impressive Superbowl performance was watched by a cool 100 million people. While most of the comments were praise for the Bad Romance star trolls took to social media to attack the singer over her recent weight gain. Not one to take things lying down, Gaga took to Instagram to respond to

16 MARBELLAROCKS | ISSUE 28

the negative comments she received in an inspiring series of posts. “I'm proud of my body and you should be proud of yours too,” Gaga wrote. Shortly followed by: “I could give you a million reasons why you don't need to cater to anyone or anything to succeed. Be you, and be relentlessly you.”

FRANCES BEAN MOVING TRIBUTE On the day Nirvana frontman Kurt Cobain would have turned 50, his only daughter Frances Bean shared a heartfelt note to her late father: “Today would have been your 50th birthday,” she wrote. “You are loved and you are missed. Thank you for giving me the gift of life. Forever your daughter, Frances Bean Cobain.” Thousands of tributes came pouring in for the man that was considered spokesman for his generation and prince of Generation X. Cobain committed suicide with a single gunshot to the head aged 27 in1994 after battling with depression and struggling to cope with fame. Nirvana was considered the most influential band of the time selling 80m records worldwide. Cobain’s mother texted visual artist Frances on Kurt’s birthday (Feb 20th) to say how proud Kurt would have been of her saying “He would be so ‘smugly’ proud of you saying, “Hey, That’s MY daughter.”

BELLS & GONGS FOR ADELE Brit singer Adele was talk of the Grammy’s this year. The Hello hitmaker picked up an unprecedented 5 gongs and also announced she had secretly wed her long term partner Simon Konecki. Adele took to the stage in a gorgeous, custom made Givenchy dress as she accepted gongs thanking her “husband.” The notoriously publicity shy couple have been

engaged since October last year and have a four year old son Angelo together. As well as best album for 25, Adele won record and song of the year for Hello, as well as best pop solo performance and best pop vocal album. This takes Adele’s Grammy nods to a total of 15. At only 28 years old this is one of the greatest feats for a Brit artist in the USrun music ceremony.

REALITY TV BABY BOOM Not one but four reality TV stars are about to drop. They must be putting something in the water in Essex ; ) TOWIE star Billie Faires is giving birth to her second child and first baby boy this month. Her former co-star Amy Childs is also expecting her first child with boyfriend Bradley Wright in the next few weeks. Amy has remained tight lipped on the sex of the baby although a recent Instagram pic

showed a pink present and card in the background! Strictly Come Dancing finalist and Hollyoaks star Chelsee Healy is also expecting her first child with boyfriend Jack Molley. Meanwhile closer to home, Jordan Sargeant and Joshua Ortega, stars of ITVBe’s Life on Marbs also have a March due date for their daughter, Willow Valentina Ortega. Congratulations!

FOR HIM

2017 TECH NEWS

Although we hate (or are maybe a bit frightened!) to admit it - technology is increasingly taking over our lives. 2017 will see this more with acceleration in all aspects of technology from virtual reality to high speed transportation and driverless cars. With all the top earning businesses in the world (Apple, Google and Microsoft) emerging from the tech world we are powerless to stop it…. so why not sit back and enjoy the ride!

VIRTUAL REALITY

Virtual reality is due to make a larger imprint on society, transcending the traditional gaming world and touching on everything from TV, sports, education and medicine. The biggest barrier at the moment is price which doesn’t make VR accessible to all. A VR-ready PC, headset and controller comes in at nearly €2000 nowadays. However, Microsoft is due to release an update to its Xbox in 2017 which marks the first time a console has built in VR capabilities. Entitled ‘Project Scorpio’ and setting back the tech giant a rumoured $500 - $600 million, this will be a huge step in making VR accessible to all. Plus with other big players including Facebook’s Oculus Rift (Mark Zuckerberg bought for $2bn in 2014), Google’s Daydream and Samsung’s Gear VR the race is definitely now on for a market leader to prevail in VR.

18 MARBELLAROCKS | ISSUE 28

DRIVERLESS CARS

Waymo, previously known as the ‘Google Self-Driving Car Project’ from 2009 till its official inauguration last year, is a driving tech company on a mission. That mission is “to make it safer and easier for people and things to move around.” With 1.1 million deaths a year from road traffic accidents you can understand the company mission statement to be compelling. Based on Waymo’s self-driving car accident reports with 14 collisions reported, 13 of these were not the fault of their software – rather another human driver making an error to cause a crash. The company plan to intensely roll out their driverless scheme in 2017 to let ordinary people use vehicles to run errands, commute to work and even get home safely after a night on the town. CEO John Krafcik plans to make self-driving cars available to the general public around the world by 2020.

NEWS

SMART HOMES

Yes guys it’s exactly what it says on the tin. Your homes will soon be running things by themselves either while your there (“Oven on – cook dinner”) or while your out at work or out on the town by voice command on your smart device. This can range from entertainment, washing machines, robot hoovers to almost every household appliance. The recent launch of the voice activated Alexa by Amazon was considered a resounding success (despite one small hiccup when a TV show ordered a few customers unwanted dolls houses because viewers TV’s were turned up loud!) In 2017 every big tech firm will be competing to be your smart home hub solution. Google, Apple, Amazon, Wink, Smart Things, Vivint and Nest are all in the running. The intriguing development will be whether a physical in-home device or a phone-based app will prevail. Apple will definitely have the edge if the latter.

THE HYPERLOOP

In 2017 we will be getting ever more closer to futuristic high speed travel. The Hyperloop is set to embark on its second and highly talked about 3 mile test run in Las Vegas later this year. The brainchild of Tesla and Space X founder, Elon Musk, Hyperloop One has already secured a deal with Dubai to create the high speed transport system with the UAE capital Abu Dhabi, cutting down transportation time from 1 hour and 20 minutes to just 12 minutes – reaching speeds of 760 mph. It will involve passengers travelling in pods levitating inside massive tubes surrounded by a cushion of air. The cushion and reduced air pressure drastically lowers friction to allow high speed travel – much in the same way as a puck glides in a game of air hockey. The pods will be propelled by magnets and air expelled from the vessels themselves. Hyperloop has also been in discussions with the UK for linking London, Manchester and Edinburgh and the US linking LA and San Francisco.

ZESTY SALMON WITH ROASTED BEETS & SPINACH

This fresh and filling salmon dish is packed full of heart healthy ingredients, is rich in calcium, iron and vitamin C and makes up 4 of your 5 a day. Get that summer bod in shape early with only 500 calories per serving. INGREDIENTS (Serves 2) • 4 small fresh beetroots • 1½ tbsp rapeseed oil • 1 tsp coriander seeds • 2 skinless salmon fillets • 2½ small oranges, zest of 1 and juice of half • 3 tbsp pumpkin seeds • 1 garlic clove • 1 red onion, finely chopped • 4 handfuls baby spinach leaves • 1 avocado METHOD 1. Heat oven to 180C, 160C fan, gas 4. Trim the stems of the beetroot and reserve any tender leaves that are suitable for eating in the salad. Cut the beetroots into quarters then toss with 1/2 tbsp oil, the coriander seeds, and some seasoning

then pile into the centre of a large sheet of foil and wrap up like a parcel. Bake for 45 mins or until the beetroots are tender then top with the salmon, scatter over half the orange zest and return to the oven for 15 mins. If you want to toast the pumpkin seeds, put them in the oven for 10 mins. 2. Cut the peel and pith from 2 oranges then cut out the segments with a sharp knife working over a bowl to catch the juices. Finely grate the garlic and leave for 10 mins to allow

the enzymes to activate. Stir the garlic into the orange juice and remaining oil with seasoning to make a dressing. 3. Remove the parcel from the oven and carefully lift off the fish. Tip the beetroot into a bowl with the red onion, remaining orange zest, pumpkin seeds and spinach leaves and toss well. Gently toss through the orange segments and avocado with any beet leaves then pile onto plates and top with the warm salmon. Drizzle over the dressing and serve while still warm.

WINE MATCH Salmon is such a versatile dish to pair with wine, it makes sense to look first at the sauce to match the flavour profile of the entire dish. If going with a zesty orange flavour, you might want to consider an MRV blend (Marsanne/ Roussanne/Viognier) which brings out a nice tropical element while straddling a line between Chardonnays and the more acidic Sauvignon Blancs. If you prefer your salmon with a nice dry wine pair with a Russian River Pinot Noir.

NELLY FURTADO: THE RIDE

MOHSIN HAMID: EXIT WEST

The Ride is the upcoming sixth studio album by Canadian singer/songwriter Nelly Furtado. It’s scheduled to be released on digital retailers and streaming services on March 3rd. Nelly, whose greatest hit was “Maneater” back in 2006 confirmed back in 2014 she was working on this new album. “I’m working on an album and actually I am very pleased. I have been writing on this album for quite a while and will probably still continue to work on it up till 2016,” she said. Nelly is known for her top collaborations especially with British producer Duke Dumont in an upcoming single and another unexpected cassettecollaboration with Blood Orange called “Hadron Collider”. The singer updated her official site with a new logo and a quote “Don’t Be Afraid Ever This Is Just Ride.” In February Nelly unveiled a few pictures via Instagram. It described the tracklist and some songs from the new album with the sentence “What Happens In Dallas”. During some Q&A on Twitter, Nelly also confirmed some more details of the upcoming project. She said the album is more like “Whoa, Nelly” and with a few collaborations on it. Furtado premiered a new track and first proper single called “Islands of Me“ during New York Fashion Week last September. The previously announced track “Pipe Dreams” premiered in November, while the music video was also premiered exclusively on December 20th. The hype leading up to the March release is massive with experimental pop producer John Congleton from St. Vincent working on a number of tracks, this will definitely be one for your playlist.

The first ever post-Brexit novel! Author Mohsin Hamid seems to know what we’ll be talking about before we do. Whether it’s nuclear testing in Pakistan (in Moth Smoke) or the uneasy stand-off between America and the Muslim world after 9/11 (The Reluctant Fundamentalist) or the unleashing of domestic forces in the wake of India’s new economy (How to Get Filthy Rich in Rising Asia) Hamid has scooped the news and turned it into literary form. Exit West, Hamid’s fourth novel, will be published on March 7 and like all of his books it’s a love story. Set in a world being irrevocably transformed by migration, the tale follows a young couple as their city collapses around them and they are forced to join a wave of migrants fleeing for their lives. It is also a story about war and a world in crisis, about how we live now and how we might live tomorrow. Before too long, the time will come for lead characters Nadia and Saeed to leave their homeland. When the streets are no longer useable and all options are exhausted, this young couple will join the great outpouring of those fleeing a collapsing city, hoping against hope, looking for their place in the world. The New York Times have added this novel to their top reads in 2017 so you know it will be a good one. The Book Riot Community also called it “beautiful” and “poignant” and posted in 2016: “This one isn’t out for some months, but I have to scream from the rooftops about it!” All in all an unexpected and magical tale which captures the essence of being human and being torn with emotions.

From a story by Roberto Orci (Transformers, Amazing SpiderMan 2) and screenwriters Zack Stentz and Ashley Miller (X-Men: First Class, Thor) comes a modern reinvention of the Mighty Morphin Power Rangers. The story centres around a group of ordinary high school kids who find themselves infused with extraterrestrial powers and must harness those powers as a team to save the world. While the TV series of the 90’s was firmly aimed at children – this feature film is targeting adult audiences aswell. It's not going to be an R-rated, gore fest like the previous Power Ranger movie outing, but it will definitely have a lot more depth, especially when it comes to character development. Add in better visual effects, more intense fighting and maybe even a curse word or two, and you'll get cinematic Power Rangers for a new generation. It's probably not wise to bring younger kids to the cinema, but everyone above age 10 should be able to handle this story just fine. The 5 Power Rangers are played by up and coming actors and the lead villain role of Rita Repulsa is played by the ever talented Elizabeth Banks (star of Hunger Games, Pitch Perfect.) Bryan Craston (star of Breaking Bad) will play Zordon, the Power Rangers mentor and Saturday Night Veteran Bill Halder is playing robot Alpha 5. The casting is genius – igniting fresh A-listers into the mix with both cult and comedic backgrounds should help bolster this film’s appeal with audiences. ROCKS RATING:

WORDS BY: SAM NICHOLS

“Talented singer, songwriter, acclaimed actor, loving husband, doting father and all round nice guy,” was my response for putting JT on the front cover of this years March issue to my questioning, unconvinced other half. Should I have also mentioned he’s smoking hot and dances like a god?! While it seems not everyone is a fan of Justin – you have to admit if 2016 was anyone’s year it was Justins. His dancefloor smash ‘Can’t Stop The Feeling’ reached the number one spot and stayed there for 10 weeks becoming the most downloaded track of the entire year. Justin also wrote and produced the single, which became the soundtrack for the DreamWorks summer blockbuster ‘Trolls’. Digging deeper into the stars plans for 2017, his soaring success is likely to be replicated. For starters he is working with the multi-talented ‘Get Lucky’ and ‘Happy’ singer/ producer Pharrell Williams on an album that is sure to storm the charts. Although JT has been vague about the album's exact release date, he did give a little more detail about the type of material fans can expect on his fourth solo album. And from the sounds of it, the next album will be as epic as its predecessor. “I wouldn’t say my new material is the antithesis of 20/20, but it does sound more singular. If 20/20 sounded like it literally surrounds your entire head, this stuff feels more like it just punches you between the eyes," Justin hinted. Pharrell also indicated that the ‘Mirrors’ singer may be more comfortable in his musical skin than he's ever been in 2017. "I would pay Justin a huge compliment to say he’s just discovering who he is now," he told Variety. “He's definitely been able to screenshot his vulnerability on this latest record.”

30 MARBELLAROCKS | ISSUE 28

Appreciating Justin’s many talents (including those snake hips and aforementioned killer dance moves) it is safe to say he was probably always destined for greatness. The petite, curly haired, Memphis born singer was famous at 11 on ‘The Mickey Mouse Club’ show and talent contest ‘Star Search.’ He was then swiftly catapulted into superstardom joining boyband ‘N’ Sync aged only 14. The group enjoyed 3 chart topping albums before going their separate ways in 2002. Since then, he’s launched arguably one of the top solo singing careers to date. Justin has already clocked up nine Grammys - earned since going solo – and all three of his studio albums have gone multiplatinum with 29 million sold in total to date. At 35, Justin has clearly figured out his strengths. He has also figured out his weaknesses. Love. He succumbed to unprecedented media attention for his tumultuous love life, dating a string of Hollywood A-Listers including Britney Spears, Cameron Diaz, Olivia Wilde, Scarlett Johansson and finally Jessica Biel, whom he married in 2012, after dating for five years. It’s not always been plain sailing for the star as he readily admits. “A lot of girls have cheated on me in the past, so it's hard for me to trust,” he admitted. “But once I fall, I fall hard.” It seems like life with Jessica is for the long term. The couple already have a son Silus (aged 2) and have indicated they would like to have more children sooner rather than later.

features Justin was recently quoted in an interview talking about his wife saying, “True love, to me, is when she's the first thought that goes through your head when you wake up and the last thought that goes through your head before you go to sleep.” Lucky girl…! Despite playing the voice of Branch in ‘Trolls’ Justin hasn’t performed as a main character in a feature film since 2011 ‘Bad Teachers’ with ex Cameron Diaz. He hasn’t ruled out returning to act on the big screen though. He won critical acclaim in ‘The Social Network’ playing Napster co-founder, Sean Parker, charting Mark Zuckerberg and Facebook’s rise to success. He also played a commendable lead ‘Alpha Dog’ and in ‘Friends With Benefits’ with Mila Kunis. With acting seemingly on a backburner for now, Justin is being hotly tipped to be doing a tour that could bring him to Spanish shores. If not Spain, definitely the UK as he calls England “home from home” as it’s where he got his first ever number one. Expect this to be towards the end of 2017 or beginning of 2018 as Justin admits his family are top of his list of priorities at the moment. Can this guy be anymore loveable? My husband would disagree, of course!

NETWORK MARKETING

UNCOVERED The network marketing industry is generating a massive $178 billion in global sales, far surpassing the record industry with $16bn and the film industry at $80bn. But what is all the fuss about?

To help you understand what network marketing is, we must first explain what it isn't. First, network marketing isn't a pyramid scheme. Pyramids are illegal programmes where people invest money based on the promise that other people will put in money that will filtrate back to them and somehow, they'll get rich. A pyramid is strictly a money game and has no basis in real commerce. Normally, there's no product involved at all, just money changing hands. Network marketing is a legitimate business. First, it's based on providing people with real, legitimate products they need and want at a fair price. Brands and businesses have wised up to the fact that consumers would rather buy products from a friend over a nameless store, lining a multi millionare CEO’s pockets. Plus, the added bonus is brands involved in network marketing (Herbal Life, Jeunesse, Mighty Buyer etc) don’t have to pay for expensive shops, marketing or advertising costs. They are simply relying on a go-getting breed, of (mainly) hard working women, promoting their products to friends, family and acquaintances. This is how people make money, there is

a slice of the pie that goes directly to them. You have probably already noticed the plethora of posts on social media… “Join my team” or ”Get rich working from home” or a friend pushing a product and inviting you to either buy it or get on board and sell it yourself. While you might have sniggered at this, don’t brush it off too quickly. These network marketing businesses are actually providing the opportunity for people to earn a decent wage working from home. We are living in a day and age where for many two paychecks are necessary for families to stay afloat. While women invariably are the ones that give up their full time jobs to take care of the children it is them that suffer the most at having to go back to full time work… they feel they neglect their children, have to dash around collecting kids and dropping them to football practice and also pay for expensive childcare costs if they’re unable to do everything themselves – all this on top of a full time job. It can be shattering. So what if they could essentially become their own boss, choose their own hours and start a potentially lucrative career from home, without having to give anything up or neglect their families and with no huge start up costs. Well this is exactly the lifestyle choice network marketing is providing today. To help explain in detail about network marketing, Marbella Rocks caught up with two seasoned network marketers here on the coast to hear their stories.

Lily Denies (42, Marbella) I was a stay at home mum but wanted to work. I knew I couldn’t have a regular 48 hour a week job and work under someone because I still had to care for my 2 children. I also couldn’t afford the costs of starting my own business, staying in the same place (as my husband likes to travel) and huge overheads of starting a shop for example. Then when I found out about network marketing through a friend I realised it could be the perfect job for me - and it is. Women love to talk, connect and share things – and this is simply what network marketing is. Except when you share and tell people about your business you get a commission. When you sign people up you are helping to empower them too so they can earn extra money – plus the way multi-level marketing works you get a commission from

their sales too. It is a win, win situation. I am currently working within the Mighty Buyer network with my own online shop that supplies 1 million products from the likes of top brands including Apple, Versace and Rolex. My shop only launched on November 1st and I currently have 125 people in my team (either signed by myself or through someone I’ve signed) and have already generated a good income. I probably only work 4 hours a day, 3 or 4 days a week so this can slot in with all my other jobs as a mum and wife. Plus as socialiising is part of the job I find myself out and about a lot more. I couldn’t be happier. If you are interested in joining my team at Mighty Buyer contact lilydenies@yahoo.com

SARAH MARSHALL (46, SOTOGRANDE) I live in the sunshine, I love the sunshine! I spent my career travelling and had taken a long break to support my husband and raise my son. Last year I finally had the time to get back into doing something for me. Whatever I did would have to work around my family and the school run, and be centred around something that I love. Through my sister, a fashion designer, I had been introduced to a company called Gandy´s, who´s story and product both appealed to me instantly. They produce beach and summer gear and a large percentage of the profits go to charity. The charity is very close to the heart of the Gandy´s founders, as they were children orphaned in the 2004 tsunami, and they now spend their spare time helping other orphaned children in Asia. I now know that everything I sell ultimately helps a child far less fortunate than our own. To create a more well rounded product offering I have also researched and identified other lifestyle products that cater for

people living in the 300 plus days of sunshine every year on the Costa del Sol. They all compliment the Gandy´s fashion products and focus on looking good and staying young (not just at heart!). My company ´Flop and Dots´ specialises in beach wear, rejuvenating beauty products and jewellery, and can access products not always easy to come by in Southern Spain. As well as using my soon to be launched website, www.flopanddots.com, I also host party´s locally where a few people can get together, without any pressure to buy, and have a glass of wine and peruse a wide sample of what we have to offer. It is wonderful as I am promoting fantastic brands and socialising at the same time. If you are interested in joining me on this exciting adventure or to work in network marketing please contact me on sarahmarshall17@hotmail.co.uk

Jade Woolley (31, Sotogrande) In 2014 I moved to Spain for my partners work and became a stay at home mum. Whilst I loved every second with my son, I found it hard as I had always been financially independent and generally missed the adult interaction of a work place. I am sure many mums can relate to this. Then I was introduced to a business through a friend that totally changed my life. An organisation that is creating opportunities for millions of people to start their own business from home; a business that is set up to support small business owners gain huge financial success and freedom. It fits perfectly around my son and our current commitments, allowing me to make my own money in the stolen moments of the day, gain my financial independence back and meet and interact with people all over the world.

My business is a whole food based health & nutrition product line that bridges the gap between what we should eat and what we do eat every day. All our products are plant based and vegan-friendly. At the Health Evolution our aim is to inspire people to live a healthier lifestyle with the support of our product line. My business has the potential to generate an income upwards of €5,000+ per month dependant on your goals, with staggering additional bonuses. I have started building my team to help others achieve a residual income and I love meeting new people; sharing my journey and helping people change their lives. EXPLORE

NECKER ISLAND FROM WHITE HOUSE TO WHITE ISLE From the look of Barack Obama’s latest holiday snaps you wouldn’t be hard pushed to realise the former President is now in full vacation mode. And of all the places in the world he picked to go, Branson’s billionaire paradise Necker Island was his first choice. But what is the haven on the British Virgin Islands all about and would you chose to vacation here? Well Marbella Rocks Pra has been and has a candid step-by-step account to life on Branson’s exclusive island.

THE STORY BEHIND NECKER

It all started with a girl. Back in 1978, Sir Richard Branson was presented with an opportunity to buy an island and since he was trying to win over a girl, it seemed like the right move to make. After a savvy deal, the asking price of $6 million was brought down to an offer of $180k and Branson found himself the owner of a beautiful piece of land. The one condition of the deal was that a resort needed to be built on the island within 4 years. This, of course, was (is) the stunning Necker Island. More often than not, the gut reaction to hearing about Necker is to exclaim that it’s nothing more than a billionaire’s

36 MARBELLAROCKS | ISSUE 28

playground. Without a doubt, it is exclusive and for the elite even the most well-heeled of my friends who have been lucky enough to frequent the British Virgin Islands have only seen Necker Island from a distance. It seems so out of reach even though it’s right there, just across those crystalline blue waters. But, my goodness, when a miracle happens and you get to bury your feet into the soft, white sand that fringes the island and experience the “Necker Effect” it dawns on you - this is a piece of luscious paradise that, despite the luxury price tag, is pure, beautiful and full of surprises.

THE FLIGHT(S) OVER

Getting to Necker involved multiple flights and stopovers. I went from Dubai to Qatar to Miami to St. Thomas to Necker Island. That’s 3 flights, 2 hotel stays, and 1 boat ride. Or in Pra's terms: 4 movies, 3 gin & tonics, 2 Sav Blancs, and a snooze...next time you’re on long haul, break it down into liquid, food, sleep, and movies. You'll be amazed at how quickly times goes! :)

EXPLORE Great House, which is the hub of the island. To top it all off, there were 2 Virgin staff waiting for us with a tray of champagne to welcome us “home”. (These glasses of bubbly were just the first of many to come!). An open, airy Balinese villa, the Great House has 10 bedrooms, including a fabulously grand 1,500 sq. ft. master suite and a rooftop terrace spacious enough to seat up to 40 people for a meal. Scattered around the island are 8 private villas with names like “Love Temple” and “Bali Hi” which are equally luxurious and delectable (if not more so!). My greeting party when I walked up to the villa was a family of tortoises and a Jurassic Park-esque iguana that seemed fairly unbothered by the new company. The tortoises made it very clear that this was their house and we were just visiting - they crawled where and when they pleased, including over my foot at breakfast the next morning, which resulted in a near-freakout before I realised what it was!

beyond appreciative of my luck that I was experiencing my own personal Utopia. Upon exploring my room a bit more, I discovered a handwritten note from the Virgin staff welcoming me to the island, along with all of the amenities I would need during my stay, from sunscreen to Aromatherapy Associates products. Had I known, I could have saved about 3 kgs of space in my suitcase! The large four poster bed was draped with voile and every night, I slept with the balcony doors wide open and the gauzy material gently blowing around me with the island breeze. The early mornings saw me out on the balcony, lounging on a massive sunbed as I watched the birds and listened to the sounds of this blissful paradise. It was like a scene right out of a movie.

FIRST IMPRESSIONS

Cutting through the stunning Caribbean waters from St. Thomas to Necker, we passed superyachts and islands before being told that Necker was just ahead in the distance. The 74acre island seemed to dance in front of my eyes with its vividly lush greenery and white sand beaches set against the brilliant azure of the sky and sea. From the dock, we hopped into buggies and drove up to the appropriately named

WHERE YOU’LL SLEEP

My boudoir, like the rest of the house, was the embodiment of rustic luxury. I stepped out onto the balcony, which opened up to the most spectacular views of the island and left me slack-jawed and

WHAT NECKER IS ABOUT

It’s time to put things into perspective about Necker Island. Despite the price tag and parade of celebs (think George Clooney, Ronnie Wood, Adrian Grenier, Harry Styles, Natalie Imbruglia, Princess Diana and Kate Moss), this place isn’t about being waited on hand and foot by butlers who address you as sir and madam. Whether you call it barefoot luxury, a priceless paradise, or a slice of cloud nine living, when you stay on Necker, it’s simply as if Richard has swapped you his house keys and said “Make yourselves at home and have a hoot!”

EXPLORE STAFF & SERVICE

The staff are awesome, just like pretty much everything else Virgin touches. They know how to have tons of fun but they also deliver in spades and leave you wanting for nothing. Not once did I get even an inkling of a “that’s not in my job description” attitude. I had the BEST masseuse I’ve ever experienced (shout out to Hazel Ball!) whose technique was gold medal-worthy. And yet, later that evening, there was Hazel serving up champagne. The staff here have multiple roles, from personal tour guides to sushi servers, sailing enthusiasts and tennis coaches, and they embody all of them with genuine enthusiasm. Going into recruitment geek mode for a minute, let me just say “WOWWWWWW”. These guys have really nailed being true Virginites. Name another island plonked in the middle of the ocean with the power to attract such top-notch staff. I’ve been in the recruitment game long enough to know that it’s damn hard. It would be easy for staff to get bored but because of things like Virgin Unite, it seems more like earning a Life Degree whilst on the job.

HOW TO KEEP BUSY

You can do as you please and go where you’d like but in true Virgin fashion, the staff always have tricks up their sleeves to keep you entertained. Every evening, they prepared a theme for us and we were provided with all of the accoutrements to bring it to life.

38 MARBELLAROCKS | ISSUE 28

Casino Night at the Great House was one to rival Ocean’s Eleven and 80’s Night on Flamingo Beach featured staff dressed to the nines in classic 80’s gear with the most fabulous soundtrack that probably had the nearby flamingos tapping their toes. The White Party had a lovely beachy vibe on the terrace and then there was my personal favourite, Murder Mystery Night. This memorable night began at Crocodile Pavilion but when someone (who may or may not have been me) suggested that we explore all of the hot tubs and jacuzzis, it resulted in us tipsily gallivanting about the island until the early hours of the morning! (If I’m not mistaken, one couple saw the sunrise…) The team says what happens on Necker stays on Necker. And why sleep when you can party? We were absolutely “neckered” after that night but it was worth every lost hour of sleep. And speaking of jacuzzis, the resident Necker dog is a big fan of them so be prepared for a furry companion if you’re soaking in one! On another afternoon, a group of us decided that we’d like to explore the BVIs, so staff member Seth took us to Cooper Island Beach Club, which was a stunner in its own right. One lunch and a few mojitos later, we zipped off on the boat to the infamous Soggy Dollar Bar—so called because you have to swim up to the beach—to imbibe in their signature Painkiller cocktail on Seth’s recommendation. Don’t ask me what was in them—all I know is they went down a storm. Even lunchtime came with a bit of whimsy and adventure. I found myself ziplining straight down to Turtle Beach from the Great House, looking particularly fetching in Kaftan, bikini, and Vuitton sunnies paired up with a lovely safety hat! Post lunch on the beach, we swam out to a trampoline set in the ocean for an afternoon of bouncing around.

EXPLORE Other things that you can indulge in whilst on Necker? The floating sushi bar at Crocodile Pavilion (lounge in the pool and grab a bite of sushi as it floats by), practically every water sport you can imagine, or just lolling around on a hammock as you gaze out across the ocean…There is truly something for everyone and there’s no way you would ever be bored here! For those sports fanatics there’s tennis, golf, basketball, a fully equipped gym and water sports fans there is literally anything and everything going including kitesurfing, windsurfing, wakeboarding and even chartering the Necker miniature submarine.

miss them—there are about 430 of these guys, including Miss Lucky who is blind. One of my favourite activities was feeding the endangered species of Madagascan lemurs, which Sir Richard Branson is passionate about trying to help preserve. There are currently about 80 of them from 7 different species (including Mongoose lemurs, Red Fronted Brown lemurs, White Fronted Brown lemurs, Red Collared Brown lemurs, and Black and White Ruffed lemurs). I went into one of the enclosures and no sooner had I grabbed some food were the friendly little creatures jumping on me to get a nibble. These little guys weren’t bashful in the slightest and it was just fab!

BEYOND THE PARTIES

Necker Island is full of wildlife and the conservation efforts here are tremendous. Some of the creatures you’ll encounter are Aldabra Giant Tortoises, Scarlet and White Ibis, Rock iguanas (which can grow over 6 feet long), Anegada iguanas (which are already extinct in the wild) and flamingos. The flamingos were once native to the BVIs and are now part of a breeding programme on Necker Island to help repopulate the Caribbean. You can’t

And then there’s Virgin Unite, the entrepreneurial foundation of the Virgin Group. Several times a year, this foundation flies in some of the most inspirational speakers for the group’s Leadership Gatherings where people and entrepreneurial ideas unite to provoke positive changes in the world. Some of the staff were saying how lucky they are to be able to lap up the words and wisdom of these speakers from around the globe whilst on Necker. Take, for example, recent speaker Cemal Ezel. He is a Virgin Start-Up entrepreneur who launched Change Please, “a social enterprise that finds exceptional homeless people and trains them to be baristas”. So I’d just like to remind those who have hinted at Necker being nothing more than a billionaire’s playground—perhaps it would be worth your time to go beyond the surface? Because although it certainly is a party island, there’s also a lot of good happening here!

FINAL THOUGHTS

It’s amazing. You’re paying about 20x more than you would for a full-service, 5-star resort, and yet, you’re perfectly happy to go about your own business on Necker. No one’s tending the bar? No prob, just pour yourself a drink. Want to get from one side of the island to the other? Jump into an available buggy and drive yourself. There’s no expectation of being treated like Princess Grace of Monaco. The luxury is the ability to really make yourself at home and kick up your heels and enjoy the island experience, Bransonstyle. After 4 nights, I’m certain that my personal life mantra is right in line with the DNA of Necker. No great party started with a salad, water, or a laptop! (Richard, if you’re reading this, I’d love to have your input! I’m pretty confident you’d nod in agreement…) And guess what… dreams can come true! Oh, and the girl he was trying to impress with the island? Dear reader, he married her.

MAKE UP WINNERS A

wards season is in full swing. February kicked off with The Grammy’s and the Bafta’s followed swiftly by the Brits and the pinnacle of awards season The Academy Awards or the more affectionately known Oscars. The media is infatuated by the winners, the dresses, the outfits, the hair and of course, the make-up. Being Principal of Marbella Beauty Academy awards season’s looks always fascinate me. Here are my top picks from the 4 Key Awards Galas and who scored highest in the beauty stakes.

THE GRAMMYS Giselle is Principal of Marbella Beauty Academy and has been in the Beauty business for over 30 years, having trained at the world famous Champney’s College in Tring and gaining experience working on their Health Farm. She worked as Spa Manager at The Metropole Hotel and then went on to open several of her own Salons before training as a Teacher and assessor and being invited to teach in Further Education and then private colleges. Seeing the need for high standards on the coast, she gained accreditation from C.I.B.T.A.C, The British Association of Beauty Therapists and Cosmetologists own examining board, which is the preferred qualification in the Beauty Industry Internationally. Giselle has been successfully running courses in Marbella since 2008. 70 MARBELLAROCKS | ISSUE 28

Winner Lady Gaga The Grammys are the awards to take risks. And when it comes to daring choices Laga Gaga is right up there. Despite her lacklustre performance with Metallica Lady Gaga rocked the Grammys with her long blonde and rose gold hair, rainbow eye makeup complete with rhinestone detailing. The bold pink lip choice set off the entire look beautifully. Runner Up Rihanna Rihanna’s brown smoky eye and voluminous curls caught everyone’s attention on the red carpet. The exaggerated cat eye effect with liner and shadow looked smouldering against her nude pink lip.

HAIR & BEAUTY

THE BAFTAS

THE Brits

THE OSCARS

Runner Up Emily Blunt Girl on the Train Brit actress Emily Blunt wowed in this simple yet elegant look with black cat eye and subtle coral lip that perfectly complimented her McQueen gown. Her side braided up do added a playful twist to her demure look.

Runner Up Doutzen Kroes Model Doutzen Kroes shined at this years Brits in a beautiful monochrome dress. The 9 times Vogue cover star paired the gown effortlessly with a red lip, barely there make-up and a simple updo proving she can work style both on and off the runways.

Runner Up - RUTH NEGGA Oscar nominated Lover actress Ruth Negga has been stand out on the red carpet throughout entire awards season. This is undoubtedly her best look with red lace, dark berry lip and a berry smoked eye, a great modern twist on the classic grey.

Winner - Thandie Newton Westworld and The Pursuit of Happiness actress Thandie Newton opted for a gothic glam look for the BAFTA red carpet. Her light grey smoky eye and eyeliner was perfectly offset by a dark berry lip with a purple hue. With her hair worn long and straight and a plunging silk black dress, Thandie completely nailed the vampy look.

Winner - KATY PERRY Katy stole the show at the Brit Awards with her metallic effect outfit choice, glitter eyeshadow and creative top knot that was actually a series of 8 individual buns down the back of her head. The Roar singer looked striking and her 70's disco inspired look was perfectly offset with a rose gold lipstick, blusher and matching shadowing above her silver glitter lids. Top marks Katy.

Winner - EMMA STONE Emma Stone not only picked up the Best Actress gong at this year's Oscars for her role in Lala Land - her style stakes also topped the winners list. This statuesque gold dress was teamed perfectly with a cool rust colour lip that matched her 'old Oscar glamour' wavy hair do. Emma beamed as she took to the red carpet knowing full well that this was indeed her year and her outfit/ hair/make-up ensemble were definitely going to be front cover news.

t's almost time for the panic. The realisation that summer starts next week and you forgot to diet and had really wanted to fit in that favourite bikini. Oh well there's always next year. OR.....you still have time so let's stop talking and start doing! This month there are a few points and common misconceptions I'd like to touch on that will help you get started on the right foot and achieve that dream body in time for summer. Let's start by tweaking a small phrase that really gets under my skin when talking about body composition and making a transformation. That phrase is "Weight Loss". Anyone can under eat to lose weight and reduce the scales earning gold stars in the slimming club but that is simply not an optimal or healthy attitude if we are imagining having and maintaining the body of our dreams. Let's forever change our goal to "Fat Loss." Secondly, you might have heard the term "Muscle weighs more than Fat" well it kinda' doesn't make sense in that form but when we talk of per volume then yes the same size and shape of muscle weighs a hell of a lot more than fat. So for this reason we're going to ditch the bad habit of "Scale watching" because it just isn't an accurate account of what's happening with your body. If we are successfully building muscle and losing fat then the scales are likely to even go up. Especially in those who are new to resistance training. IMAGINE THE PANIC. A much better way to track our progress is visually so let's start by taking pictures once a week in the same place with the same light. We call this a "Visual Diary". Further to this, with my clients I will take 2 measurements using Fat Callipers, measuring the mm's on the front and side of the belly.

Peet’s Tip:

Callipers are very easy to use, easy to read and are readily available online priced from anywhere between €4 and €35. By measuring with callipers it gives us a close idea of fat loss rather than just weight loss. I will measure only 2 points (front/side belly) as we can't actually "Spot remove" fat. Fat loss is relative to the whole body so IMO a full body fat percentage is not needed in this instance. We want to see the scales stay around the same and the calliper millimetres to go down - JOB DONE. We will also see the changes in our visual diary.

CARDIO

A stumbling block for a lot of people aside from the waves of misinformation on the net, is ASSUMPTION. Most of the time we assume that a certain method, product or produce should "be healthy" or "burn fat" or "not fattening" and other popular generic phrases. But then when actually we get down to the bare bones science of things (boring I know) it tends to be quite the opposite. One example of this is CARDIO. Now we all know for fat loss that Cardio is our friend. But then there's an old saying "too much of a good thing is bad". Aside from endurance and stamina training (long distance running, combat training etc) Cardio or an incorrect application of, tends to be just that. One of the main things that I will tend to have to adjust when starting work with a new client, aside from making them eat less is to drastically reduce their cardio regime. Let me try and explain a few of my views on the subject.

OVER STRESSING THE BODY (CNS)

Something I've regularly touched on in the past is the notion of our body being blind to our goals. What I mean

by that is that the body and the Central Nervous System in particular doesn't actually know that we are just trying to drop a size or 2 to look good for our trip to Ibiza in 3 months, 4 days, 12 hours and 17 mins. It makes decisions and reactions based purely on patterns. And in the same way it will raise an eyebrow when all of a sudden there are signs of a sudden shortage of food out there in the world (Crash Diet), it will also start to be concerned about a sudden dramatic rise in energy output and exercise activity. It will assume that you’ are either fleeing from predators or foraging long distances for food (Famine Mode) or BOTH. Both of these scenarios can put a lot of pressure on your Central Nervous System (CNS) which is our bodies main supercomputer let's say. In a biological way it is the job of the CNS to make decisions to KEEP YOU ALIVE. Decreased calories and increased energy output are really going to pose a lot of questions here and the body, aside from detrimental hormonal issues caused by this overload, the body is going to react accordingly. In short if your food is running out (Diet) your body is already going to want to store energy (Fat) for emergency and now your energy output is higher it further implements the need to store MORE. So let's be sensible with our approach to these two, often misused elements of body composition and find the right balance.

MUSCLE IS YOUR FRIEND

Another factor especially when we want to have a "toned" look, is to protect gain and protect muscle mass. Firstly the word muscle can often sound scary to a woman but pure and simply "it's a thing that you already have!" It isn't just men that have muscle it is a perfectly normal and common thing and without muscle mass the "toned" look is impossible. I just want to add that I am regularly met with the phrase "I don't want to look manly" and my answer every single time is "you won't". If a female client was to come to me with a picture of a bodybuilder or muscled fitness girl and asked me to help her look like this, we would have to sit and really etch out a plan of specific training and nutrition to work hell for leather to achieve it. It ain't gonna happen by accident TRUST ME! So, now we are not afraid to lift heavy, train hard as hell and build some muscle we can talk about the actual fat loss benefits of pumping iron. Aside from your usual cardio we can actually burn through

HEALTH & FITNESS

LISS

By working to a very low intensity by keeping the heart rate low, we are still in a situation where we are expending calories at very little demand and cost to the CNS. It's far less likely to promote a situation that will force the body to react and therefore feel it needs to start storing. Let's say for a male walking on an incline at 6kmph it would take perhaps 35 to 40 minutes to expend the same calories as a 15min HIIT session but splitting your cardio this way can give your joints and CNS a well needed break. For LISS I really like to keep it very low at a brisk walk. *The above is an opinionated analogy of how we react to these situations. For a more scientific approach to the benefits to muscle hypertrophy and muscle preservation look up Dr Jacob Wilson PHD's work in the field. SOURCE Wilson JM, Marin PJ, Rhea MR, Wilson SM, Loenneke JP, Anderson JC. Concurrent training: A Meta-Analysis examining interference of aerobic and resistance exercises. J Strength Cond Res. 2011 (in press).

CALORIE INTAKE

a hell of a lot of calories by the way we apply ourselves in the weights room and now we are basing our fat loss and body composition around nutrition and weight training, we should start to see results using our visual diary and calliper measurements. We're aiming to build muscle whilst burning fat so remember we don't necessarily want to see the scales go down as the same volume of muscle weighs more than the same volume as fat. So in many instances when we achieve this the scales actually go up, in a good way. If the results are starting to show then now we have our cardio as an extra option if fat loss stalls or we plateau. So let's say it's time to add in some cardio exercises. We now need to decide which method is best. Let's discuss 3 types of volume. Low Intensity Steady State (LISS), Mid Intensity Steady State (MISS) and High Intensity Interval Training (HIIT). Before we move on let's remember the analogy of running from predators and foraging for food from earlier. The CNS will base its choices on the time it has to make them.

MID INTENSITY

For me "Jogging" away for an hour is enough to elevate the heart rate to a point that stimulates a reaction from the main computer. It now has a decision of how to correctly fuel the process and time to make it. In this instance it will lean towards using the fuel we have ingested (Carbs/Fats) or break down the muscle back into Amino Acids to use. The last resort is for it to decide to use the emergency stores.

HIIT

So by implementing HIIT training, this rapidly and intensely stimulates the body to have to make a quick decision to fuel. Now remember you could be running from a Tiger so it doesn't have time to call a board meeting to discuss with the bodies and other heads of department so it has to act fast by activating the emergency stores. A great way to shift those stubborn pounds.

76 MARBELLAROCKS | ISSUE 28

One question I have been getting a lot on my live Q&A is "How do I calculate my calorie target to do so we would use an equation based on your Age, Weight and Height to give us a figure we call BMR (Basal Metabolic Rate) which is your calorie expenditure at complete rest. We then make a mathematical estimate of this number based on your activity levels which leaves us your DCR (Daily Caloric Recommendation) minusing a desired percentage from this amount will leave you with your calorie intake target to be in a caloric deficit. That's as technical as I want to get here but there are lots of calculators on line using the "Harris Benedict" equation and failing that head to my Facebook page and hit contact. I have designed a unisex Excel calculator I will happily email to you. Myfitnesspal can also calculate these numbers for you.

Peet’s Tip:

Although over marketed, overhyped and mostly overpriced, there is a place for useful supplementation. Of course the free stuff first WATER and without getting too technical (I wrote a whole piece on the stuff in a past issue) drink lots and lots of it. VITAMINS are important for fat loss and my recommendation is a Multivitamin but most importantly a C,B and D. OMEGA 3 is an essential fatty acid that should perhaps be no 1 on this list so be sure to add in if you're a little shy on fatty fish or grass-fed meats. There are 2 others that I would suggest and one is Diindolylmethane or DIM (Found in Broccoli, Sprouts, Cabbages and Kale) can be a useful anti-estrogen supp and IODINE (White fish, Seaweed etc) can help to produce Thyroid boosting hormones and support cells and your metabolism.

BOTTOM LINE

There is no substitute for scientific evidence. The fundamentals of "FAT loss" must be included in any regime. FAD diets, Juice and Herbal Products, Detoxes and other flash nonsense generally don't incorporate any elements of what your body actually feels comfortable to continuously maintain. So while perhaps some of these trends can help you lose "weight" and quick, it's a question of maintaining this now for potentially the rest of your life. A change of thinking and a shift in lifestyle in the right direction can go a long way to creating a "new you" and for GOOD! Remember to head over to my Facebook and Instagram pages to join in my weekly LIVE Q&A sessions.

RESTAURANT REVIEW

B

esaya Beach definitely ticks all the boxes. With its stylish beachside location, fabulous food and unparalleled service – it impressed in every area. Located on the Coral Beach sandy beachfront of the Golden Mile, 5 minutes from Puerto Banus and 5 minutes from the centre of Marbella, the location and setting is to die for. Fine beachside dining automatically springs to mind. You have all the beauty of dining by a beautiful beach with crashing waves and an airy breeze - yet there is not a hint of sand in the restaurant, just splendid white décor. When you walk into Besaya Beach you are greeted with a smile from the everfriendly maitre d’. The dining area has rattan chairs and white linen tablecloths

BESAYA BEACH

which mirror the ruched ceiling blinds. The classic, but laid-back feel of the dining room and lounge area contrasted well with the sleek bar stocked with a broad range of premium spirits. Dining at Besaya you are literally a few metres from the beach but it felt cosy and warm at our table next to the floor-toceiling glass doors despite being a wintry Saturday night.

GASTRONOMIC DELIGHTS

There was a wide range of choices on the Besaya Beach menu, with a noticeable Asian influence, that showcase some of the gastronomic delicacies from Spain and abroad. The prices are definitely not unreasonable for the quality of the ingredients with a

starter for around €14 and a main averaging €30. For starter we went for the Tuna Tartare which was served as a timbale of tuna and chopped avocado, the tuna tartare was presented beautifully and was well-balanced. The flavour of the tuna was very delicate but as a whole it hit the spot. The King Crab Salad was the stand-out dish of the evening. The crab itself was sweet, moist, succulent and rich and the accompanying salad complimented it very well. For main courses we could wholeheartedly recommend Roasted Baby Lamb cooked at a low temperature with fresh herbs. The slow cooking had tenderised the lamb until it was melt-in-the-mouth. The sauce was rich and powerful and a perfect match to the woody flavours from the herbs. The vegetables were served el dente, so if you prefer more well cooked sides, it is advisable to mention when ordering. The Mediterranean inspired olive sauce gave a pleasant twist to what is traditionally a Japanese dish for the final main of Caramelized Black Cod. The cod was cooked well and flaked away nicely with a crispy caramelised skin. Other specialities on the menu include Besaya’s Famous Hot Stone Prime Cut Steak, Steak Tartare, Grilled Lobster and a wide selection of Paella. With mains finished and plates scraped there was just about room for dessert. The Lime and Lemon “Semifreddo” with raspberry coulis was fantastic. The sharp flavours of the citrus fruits were perfectly matched by the sweetness of the raspberry coulis. If our tasters had to nit pick, the consistency would have benefitted from an extra 5 minutes out of the freezer before being brought to the table although probably

to most diners taste, but the flavours were delicious nevertheless. The Panacotta of Passion Fruit and Pineapple was also a refreshing palate cleanser and absolute perfection after a big meal. The passion fruit and jelly contrasted beautifully with the creaminess of the pineapple pannacotta. A must try dessert in our opinion.

WINE LIST

The wine list is extensive enough to satisfy even the most demanding of wine connoisseurs with some top end French reds and champagnes (Crystal and Petrus anyone?). After we chose a light Provencal Rose to not overpower our seafood starters, the waiter recommended an unknown wine to us from Rioja called La Lomba. Not a region known for its subtle rose wines, we were relieved to find that it had a delicate floral nose and a palate of red fruits.

IN SUMMARY

Besaya Beach is a stylish restaurant in a great location serving a diverse menu that is well thought-out and executed. We would definitely go back again, but would love to try out a lunch to experience the sea view in all its glory. Highly recommended.

How will your insurance company deal with your claim after the floods? The heavy rains in December have left many people wondering how their Insurance policy will respond to the damages caused. The nature and intensity of the rainfall means that instead of being picked up by the Insurance Companies, the majority of the claims will be dealt with and indemnified by the Consorcio. So who and what is 'The Consorcio de Compensacion de Seguros'? It is in fact a central compensation fund which is funded by a very small percentage of the sums insured on every Insurance policy sold in Spain and which is run by the Government. It's been in existence since 1941, and is designed to compensate victims with Insurance cover for losses resultant from "extraordinary events", such as earthquake, tsunami, terrorism & floods. The claims coming in from the recent intense rain tend to be either flooding into ground floors, basements, gardens and the like from rain water penetrating from the street, as the usual courses for water could handle no more, or damage caused by water penetrating from walls, roofs or 1st floor and above terraces which could not evacuate the water quickly enough and ended up overflowing into the apartment. The former claims from flooding will be dealt with by the Consorcio whilst the latter claims will be dealt with by the Insurance Company themselves. Just to be clear - the Consorcio will only intervene if the property which suffered the damage had at the time of the loss been Insured. If you have had the misfortune of suffering a loss during the recent flooding, you should first contact your Insurance Broker or Agent who should be able to advise you whether the loss falls into the Consorcio category or the Insurance Company, or indeed a combination of both. Your Broker / Agent should then be able to register the loss on your behalf with the relevant entity and offer you advice and assistance throughout the claims process. Obviously, there will be some delays in getting around to visit victims of the flooding, but the Consorcio have drafted in 100 loss adjusters from other regions to complement those already on the ground in Malaga, and in our experience, once they visit the damaged property, they tend to be quick, efficient and fair.

Given that it may be a few days before a loss adjuster comes to visit your home, we would suggest that you; • Take photos of any damage to buildings and/or contents. • Undertake any necessary cleaning, repairs etc and be sure to conserve any invoices, etc for the loss adjuster. • Prepare a list of damaged items. • Prior to throwing out any damaged items, conserve them until a loss adjuster has had a chance to inspect them. • Take whatever reasonable steps are necessary to minimise the impact of a claim. It seems that many Insurance Companies, brokers or agents are telling their clients to lodge the claim themselves with the Consorcio - quite a daunting task in a foreign country, but if you need to do so it can be done by phone on 902 222 665 or 952 367 042 or via web http://www.consorseguros.es/web/inicio. Op de Beeck & Worth's commitment is to handle and respond with maximum speed to the claims our clients have suffered, and our week started at 06,30 on Sunday morning with our first client suffering a flood in the basement and staff quarters of their Villa, and has not stopped since. We have opened in excess of 120 claims, over 70 of which are with the Consorcio, and will over the next few days & weeks be following up on the claims in an effort to ensure that our clients can get on with their lives as quickly as possible. Catastrophe's such as Malaga experienced last weekend bring to light the importance of having the correct insurance in place for those times when we feel the full force of nature. With this in mind we would encourage you to review your Insurance Policies, and make sure that you have the correct cover in place and that it will respond as you would like in the event of a loss.

Virgo

21 APR – 20 MAY

22 JUNE – 23 JULY

24 AUG – SEPT 3

Your birthday season brings with it a sense of renewed determination to experience – but experience what exactly? We can say more of everything that sets your heart in motion. More life, more love, more success and above all, something deeper and more soul satisfying. Expect the past or reframing your past to become more relevant on some levels. You could see the return of a past love and this can be anything from a person to picking up an activity that you used to enjoy but set aside, or just deciding that you gave up your dreams and started living someone else’s for them instead. Whatever it is, the past has new relevance and sets you on course for success in at least one key area in the next 12 months. You have your dreams for a reason - for them to come true. This year is all about doing that. Happy birthday.

Your ruler Venus makes a rare retrograde move in your house of soulmates and spiritual truths. When it comes to love - all bets are off during this period. If something has been holding you back from experiencing the kind of love you yearn for and deserve - expect to be shown exactly what that is. This is your opportunity to create a brand new dynamic for yourself - not just in love but in experiencing all the good things life has to offer. People will show their true colours now - especially lovers. You may like what you see or else realise someone has been pulling the wool over your eyes all along. Take care if embarking on a new romance and take the time to ensure that a new love interest is all they appear to be not a sheep in wool’s clothing. No matter what happens this month, the truth will set you free.

116 MARBELLAROCKS | ISSUE 28

If you find yourself thinking about someone this month, chances are shortly afterwards you will run into them or hear from them. In fact, if you have been putting off reconnecting with someone or better yet, want to offer an olive branch if you have had a falling out, this might be an excellent time to do that. Your old social networks, places you used to frequent - everything old is new again now and you could discover a fresh resonance between you and old friends or else if you find yourself revisiting old haunts, they will seem new to you on some level. Loose ends can be tied up and if a connection has gone beyond the point of no return, you will discover that at least you walk away with closure. Expect the unexpected and that blast from the past to be found where you least expect them to be.

Sometimes life hands us second chances at something or someone we thought had passed us by - and this month could see an opportunity you thought you had missed out on reappear. If you feel you let something slip through your fingers in the past, resolve to grab it with both hands this time around. Also bear in mind that often opportunities - especially second-time-around ones, may not look exactly how they did on the first pass. Will you know it when it arrives? Take a chance on something that looks good this month - even if it presents itself in a different form or different packaging than what you expected. If accepting it takes you out of your usual comfort zone and stretches you - even better. Opportunity has your name on it this month. Don’t allow it to pass you by.

Expansion, travel and taking a chance all feature this March, Leo. Time to be a little bolder, dust off those big dreams you may have left on the shelf and go for them. There’s a saying that heaven helps those who help themselves. Yes, you could be about to hit a lucky streak but that doesn’t mean you can just sit back and expect everything to fall into your lap. People from overseas or from another culture may feature and if you encounter anyone who just comes across as a little bit larger than life, take note as chances are they have a big part to play in how your future is set to unfold. When it comes to taking that chance Lady Luck may be around you. I’m not talking about wagering anything you can’t afford to lose but going for that job you may think is out of your reach or telling someone how you really feel about them may just pay off for you now.

Money that is owed or has been held up could be repaid now but with a heavy emphasis this month on your money zone - and your financial history, now may not be a good time to borrow money and it certainly isn’t a good one in which to overspend. The only way to save is to spend less and establishing a budget and your financial priorities may feature now. If you are in a position where you owe money or if your finances are out of control, you are being given a chance to rectify this in some way. The universe is asking you to understand you are not your money and neither does how much or how little you have of it determine your true worth. Treat your money how you would treat your lover. So, on this basis, what kind of a relationship do you have with it? Are you all loved up? Or has your money packed its bags and is headed out of the door? As with any relationship, you can always forge a better one.

A double dose of déjà vu could occur this month Libra as both Venus your ruler and Jupiter in your sign move backwards across the sky. Everything may appear as if someone up there pressed the ‘pause’ button as things just seem to grind to a halt. And no matter what you do, there’s no way you can restart them. My advice is not to even try. There’s a reason why you may be stalled and that is to look closely at where you are right now and whether it actually puts you on course for where you are trying to get to. This is your opportunity to adjust. The results of something you set in motion - perhaps even by not doing something, could catch up with you in the present. Again, if this happens this is just to demonstrate cause and effect. You’ll now understand that the choices you made in the past have created the present.

Don’t neglect your health or those mundane tasks that while they may irk, are important nevertheless. If you’ve been over indulging of late or ignoring what your body is telling you, then you may well be faced with the bill for that later this month. When it comes to work, ensure you dot the ‘i’s’ and cross the ‘t’s’ and don’t whatever you do take a slapdash approach or just operate on cruise control. If you make a mistake don’t try to cover it up either. Just own it and then fix it. Being upfront and honest - even about your mistakes if you make them, ensures you emerge with your reputation intact. However, when it comes to those inner feelings or ideas, I would advise you to keep them to yourself for the moment unless you know the person who are confiding in is 100% trustworthy. When in doubt stay silent - and that goes double when it comes to indulging in office gossip. The less said, the better.

Reuniting with a past lover or reviving an old dream could be part of a new throwback experience and second time around could just be better. You’re dealing with things differently now and because of that can expect different results. You’re not only doing different, but daring to be different too. Some goals may no longer have relevance for you and if so, don’t be afraid to discard them and replace them with new dreams. Or you suddenly see a way to manifest that dream that has remained just out of reach and now wonder why you thought it so impossible. Or something you wished and waited for now appears and drops right into your lap. When it comes to ideas, don’t sit on them especially if you’ve been mulling over them for a while. It could be the big idea whose time has come now. Work it for all it’s worth.

You’re looking closely at what you’ve achieved so far in terms of your career - and what you would still like to do this March. Changing jobs, changing rooms - or even the whole house, could feature. There’s no point in material success if you don’t have the time to enjoy it with those you care about. Chances are you could be on the move on some level - either to a new office or a new neighbourhood. And if this has been on your mind lately then stop thinking about it and start doing something about it - anything from updating that CV to researching new areas to live in. You will be alerted to where you have fallen into a rut or just plain settled for less than you deserve. Time to dust off those ambitions and also to look at exactly whose career choices you are pursuing. Are you doing what you want to do or what you were expected to do? It’s time for something more fulfilling now.

If travelling things will either go very, very smoothly or you will encounter chaos and delays at every turn. Missed connections, reservations, lost luggage or you buying a ticket to Amsterdam and ending up in a canoe paddling down a river in the Gabon are also likely. For this reason, expect smooth sailing but have a back-up plan just in case. Revising those big plans can lead to success however and go back over that pitch, project, thesis, script, manuscript or business idea and you may be surprised at how you can add the winning touch to it now. If you are revisiting somewhere - anywhere from an old neighbourhood to a holiday haunt, you’ll see it with fresh eyes. Old school friends and ships that passed you in the night could reappear. Sometimes you have to get lost to find what it is you really want.

Your money is in focus right now and if you have had the ‘I don’t care too much for money’ attitude, then you will see that money does not care too much about you either. Funny that the duo who wrote those words had plenty of it. Time to show others that you can remain a spiritual being in a material world. Some of you may find yourselves in the position where you have access to more money or resources than you have done in the past. Either through a pay rise, payout or even looking after someone else’s money for them as in a trust or legacy. If so, this is all about how you invest the money and make it work for you, rather than frittering it away. The message this month is not how much you have of the folding stuff, but how you utilise it. Do you spend it as fast as it comes in? Or do you have a bigger plan for your money? Money may not buy you happiness but it buys choices.

Ali Meehan With International Women’s Day on March 8th what better local celebrity to interview than Ali Meehan, founder of women’s networking community - Costa Women (www.costawomen.com). Ali is also organising a fantastic event called ‘Make It Happen’ with the UK based 1230 The Women’s Company on Friday March 10th at the Andalucia Lab in Marbella to help women in business and in their daily lives.

What made you start the community Costa Women? My own need for friends (lol!) Whilst Social Media was already proving popular for connecting people, I felt the need to create a secure space just for Women like me where they could make friends, ask the all important questions about moving to and living in Spain, and share their own stories and ideas. That was at the end of 2010 and now the website and community have achieved far more than I ever planned or imagined. What was your professional background? My career has been very varied and enjoyable. 17 years in a law firm in Kent, followed by 5 years in a marketing/sales role as an Export Manager in a wholesale glass company where I got to travel the world. Just before we came back to Spain, I spent 9 years working in the Oil & Gas Industry in the Middle East. The skills, lessons and ideas I have learnt over 40+ years in the business world have proved useful in creating Costa Women and given me tips to pass on too!

It contains stories written by Costa Women members with advice for Women looking at moving here. Now a bit about you Ali, you have a different name? “Imagineer” is my name within Costa Women – imagining ideas for Costa Women and what we can do! This quote sums up my ethos on life - "The world needs dreamers and the world needs doers. But above all, the world needs dreamers who do." - Sarah Ban Breathnach.

Definitely book! Within Costa Women we have a monthly book club where we all read the same book so that gives us all the chance to read books we might not normally have read.
