EDITOR’S NOTE H

ello August. With summer in full swing we are excited to bring you all the latest and greatest events Marbella and the Costa del Sol has to offer. Not only do we have global superstars Jason Derulo, Paris Hilton and Kaiser Chiefs coming to town but we are being blessed with the oldies but goodies including Fatboy Slim, Andrea Bocelli and Michael Bolton. Check out our calendar on pages 23 - 25 for details on all the best events. If you’re reading online you can even click through and buy direct from the venues thanks to our new interactive calendar. And flick to page 48 to read our exclusive interview with Puente Romano performer Michael Bolton who tells us all about his staggering rise to notoriety (he was once in a heavy metal rock band) and how he swooned the secretaries at his record label and why he chopped off his trademark locks. We also have an exclusive Rock Out interview with Rene Schaefer from Nikki Beach on the upcoming season’s events - where he also lets slip that the Nikki Beach European headquarters are to be based in Marbella and this year’s infamous Red Closing Party in October will have a chic Parisian feel. We’re feeling the love for this event already. A highly insightful read is our cover feature The Glamour of Marbella – steeped in history from the early frequenters to our Mediterranean paradise such as Prince Alfonso, Eva Gardner and Grace Kelly - Marbella is so much more than a het up ‘Brits abroad’ holiday destination. We have culture, sun, luxury and glamour and we have it in spades. Check out page 52 to find out why we are considered the jewel of the Med. Plus, Luke Hill, our resident fitness columnist, has found four fantastic and interesting ways to keep fit on the coast this Summer. If slogging out in the gym is not your thang then why not try his alternatives. Our personal fave has to be pole dancing. And the picture on page 80 of Luke attempting it is priceless. If you fancy a night on the town there are three new bar and restaurant launches this month that are worth checking out. Firstly the tropical, yet uber cool, Bao Gardens in Nueva Campana where street food, kraft beer and cocktails reign supreme. Next up is Fusion Lounge - a decadent restaurant, cocktail and shisha lounge in the heart of Puerto Banus serving the finest Moroccan, Arabic and International cuisine. For you dancing queens out there the new, and very funky, Flamingo Lounge in Estepona will be entertaining you with the best local DJ’s and live performances.

Have a great month. Til next time,

everyone’s talking about... JAY Z V. ERIC BENET

Jay Z’s new album 4:44 has caused huge controversy since its release last week. Particularly among a host of A Listers such as Halle Berre’s Hollywood actor ex Eric Benet who he openly slates for cheating on Helle when they were married. The brazen rapper took to the mic and penned a track talking about Eric’s past indiscretions. Addressing himself in the song he said: “You almost went Eric Benet / Let the baddest girl in the world get away / I don’t even know what else to say. I can’t believe you.” Within hours of the album dropping, irrated Eric tweeted: “Hey yo #Jayz! Just so ya know, I got the baddest girl in the world as my wife….like right now.” Following his split with Halle, Eric reportedly checked into

TOPSHOP HEIR GOES BADASS

Chloe Green, the multi-millionairess, ‘jolly hockeysticks’ daughter of Topshop mogul Sir Philip Green, has been happily dating “convicted conman” Jeremy Meeks for a number of weeks now. Chloe, 26, and Jeremy, 33, were spotted out for their eighth date in LA as he reportedly finalises his divorce from his soon to be ex-wife following a string of dates in Turkey and Cannes with Chloe. (Point to be noted - Meeks wife was said to be happily married with 3 children until the French

Riviera pairing with millionairess Chloe 10 days ago.) Anyway, we are sure the convicted felon, who previously served a 9 year sentence for grand theft in 2002, then gun possession and resisting arrest in 2014, plus other misdemeanors is surely in for the long haul with posh gal Chloe. Gun crime in LA and the impressionable daughter of a questionable leading UK businessman… this is surely headed for bigger and better things and a lot more column inches.

RONALDO BUILDING A FOOTBALL TEAM

Cristiano Ronaldo has confirmed girlfriend Georgina Rodriguez is pregnant with his fourth child, months after using a surrogate to carry twins. Georgina, 23, has a noticeable baby bump but previously denied she was expecting. Cristiano broke the news to the media at the end of July, saying: “I’m very happy she

a sex addiction rehab centre and later moved on to marry Manuela Testolini in 2011 (Prince’s former wife), with whom he now has two children. Multi-billionaire Jay Z also mentioned Solange, Bey’s sister, in the album and let slip about a few other people who have angered the rapper, who have (at the moment) remained nameless. A source close to Halle revealed: “Halle absolutely loves Jay’s track and thinks it’s hilarious he cracked on Eric about his cheating. Jay is totally right Eric’s cheating did ruin their marriage and it really hurt Halle." The insider added: "Halle isn’t one to forget people who screw her over too easily or quickly so it definitely gave her a giggle." In our opinion Jay Z 1 - Eric 0. We can’t wait for the next album and public dissing. If you think you can get away with it in Hollywood… think again “Karma” (aka Jay Z) is here to get you! You have been warned.

is expecting.” It is unclear why they used a surrogate to carry twins (Eva and Mateo) that were delivered on June 29 this year when Georgina can clearly get pregnant. The footballer already has a son, Cristiano Junior, from a previous relationship. The Portuguese heartthrob has indicated he would like more too. Football team building at its best!

news BLAC & ROB AT WAR

It’s all-out war in the Kardashian camp with Chyna Blac and Rob Kardashian officially splitting up. Not only are the two repellent reality TV stars over each other (we are pained in the thought that they were once under each other) but their volatile, bossum bursting, fat spleiling social media accounts were over too – unfortunately only for a few days. And according to both camps there is no chance of a reconciliation. It all happened a mere 10 days ago when Chyna allegedly cheated on Rob. In case you have been living under a rock. Rob, caught wind and decided to publicly dump Chyna while posting a whole host of naked pictures of her to get his own back. This was not just a glimpse of Chyna side boob. Classy Rob decided to post full on nude pics of Chyna including up close and personal shots that made Insta bosses delete his account. The couple are now in all-out war mode, fighting over custody of their 8 month old child with accusations of “he said, she said”. It is all too painful and petty. Anyway at least shy, retiring wallflower grandma Kris has waded in and told the two to sort out their differences for the sake of Dream.

LOUISE & JAMIE MARRIAGE CRISIS

Former Eternal singer Louise Redknapp and football pundit Jamie Redknapp have reportedly called time on their 19-year relationship. Louise has moved out of their Surrey mansion and is staying with her mother 15 minutes away. The couple, who have two sons together, are allegedly spending time apart whilst they sort out their differences and decide whether they want to carry on as a couple. It is unclear the reason for the split although Redknapp’s parents have claimed publicly they think “Louise is going through a midlife crisis.” She has been pictured out partying with

F***ING BRILLIANT!

Celebrity chef Gordon Ramsay has defended his decision to fly first-class while his children sit in economy seats. And he has made his point in spades. Excuse the many expletives! "I got s**t last month about not paying first-class tickets [for my kids],” Gordy, 50 , told a newspaper. "That’s 15 f***ing grand a ticket, so let’s work this out for a minute,” he said. "For four first-class tickets to LA, 60 f***ing grand. For Tana and I, 90 f***ing grand… "F***ing right I won’t pay [first-class]

for them [the children]. What muppet is going to spend £90,000 flying from here to LA?” he blasted. Gordon’s thrifty approach turned out to be a life lesson for his kids - Matilda, 15, Jack and Holly, 17, and Megan, 18. "I said to the kids, ‘Every single person you see on that plane, you’re going to see at the carousel. You’re not getting to LA any quicker. Do you have any idea what you can do with that money after you get off that plane?’” he said. Good f***ing point Gordon!

new gal pal Daisy Lowe, 28, at a string of events while her mother and Jamie have been at their respective homes looking after her two sons – Charley, 14 and Beau, 9. Louise’s friends have said that the 42-yearold former singer has “rediscovered her mojo” following her dazzling performances on the BBC show ‘Strictly Come Dancing’ last year. Partying with model Daisy has caused criticism from Jamie’s camp who think she is pictured out far too much. Louise is still wearing her wedding ring so obviously a reconciliation could be on the cards.

LAUREN LAUNCHES PERFUME AT PR

‘The Real Housewives of Cheshire’ star Lauren Stone chose the prestigious Puente Romano in Marbella to launch her new perfume, Lauren Stone – Number One. The star attended a press and photocall event on July 21 where she proudly showed off the new scent.

WHAT'S TRENDING...

A whole host of your favourite celebrities have been hitting the annual Wimbledon tennis tournament in a vast array of dapper suits.

While jeans and collarless shirts are a “no go” in Centre Court, tailored shorts are permitted. However, despite the soaring 30 degree heat, these Brit and Hollywood hunks have shunned shorts in favour of dapper suits. Our personal style favourites are David Beckham, Dominic Cooper and James Middleton. The most on trend look consists of a tighter than normal look with drainpipe trousers and a fitted blazer. Tie clips are also making a comeback as is colour. Navy and pink were the order of the day.

MUSIC BY/IN THE POOL There are a million Bluetooth speakers on the market but JBL has always stood clear of its competitors. Its line of Charge speakers are one of the only Bluetooth speakers out there that'll let you charge your device while playing music – hence the Charge name. Plus the new The JBL Flip 4 is now completely waterproof so you can use it at the beach or near a pool without worrying about frying its electronics. It can also survive a dip in the pool unlike many others on the market. Available from €120 at most good retailers.

NO MORE EXCUSES

What gets your goat about festivals, apart from the lack of washing facilities, queues and smell?! Well 3 in 10 festival goers claim finding their tent is a major problem (the copius Kopperberg’s don’t help.) Well thanks to a new app, surprisingly called ‘Tent Finder’ this is no longer an issue. The app creates a pin on your phone and directs you back to your abode if even if you don’t have wifi or data as it has a built in compass. It also features a weather report, a torch light and the ability to synchronise with your friends. So now you have literally no excuse for getting in the wrong tent at 4am.

MAXI DRESSES

Summer is here and with that the conundrum of how we can look elegant while staying cool on those hot summer nights. The answer is tulle and mesh – the lightest of lightweight fabrics in pastel shades will leave room for your skin to breathe whilst also embracing the hottest trend of 2017.

GRANNY GREY

This trend is getting more popular. The whitest and greyest of hues work perfectly and for darker greys don’t worry about a bit of rootage it adds to the overall look.

BEJEWELLED HAIR

Adding a few jewel clips to a tousled bob can instantly transform. Be sure to keep locks beachy and hairsprayed as the heavier clips can stay in all night long with this added texture.

UNDERCUT IT

Only for the brave. And probably best for those readers that are not lawyers or doctors as difficult to hide after. Also only stick to the one side and make that the feature point.

BODY JEWELLERY

Wanting to jazz up that swimsuit or bikini for the latest pool or beach party? The latest body jewellery to hit the high street is stunning and can be as simple as a silver chain for those on a budget or all out glam like our minted option from local designer Caroline Azzi.

GRIDDLED SEA BASS WITH PROVENCAL VEGETABLES AND BASIL Oil

Impress your guests with this restaurant worthy Sea Bass dish from William Drabble. The griddled Sea Bass is presented in a fabulously colourful way to enjoy this flavourful yet healthy fish. Heat the olive oil in a small pan and add the finely chopped shallot, crushed garlic and a pinch of salt. Cook the ingredients until soft and sweet then add the Herbes de Provence. 6. Add the courgette and aubergine and cook until soft. Add the mushroom and cook until the mixture becomes dry, then add the spinach and cook until dry again. 7. Add the tomato and cook for 1 minute, then add enough of the breadcrumbs to stiffen the mixture. Set aside. 8. Cut the baby aubergines in half and place into a small frying pan with a little olive oil and salt. Cook cut side down in the oven at 140°C/Gas mark 1 for about 10 minutes until soft. 9. Leave to cool slightly then make an impression in the centre and stuff with the farce and sprinkle with a few breadcrumbs. 10. Season the fish, place in the pan skin side down and fry for thirty seconds. Transfer the pan to the oven and cook at 170°C/Gas mark 3 for 5-6 minutes. Directions 12. Sauté the baby artichokes in another oven proof frying pan 1. Make the basil oil by placing the basil into boiling salted in the olive oil, then add the red peppers followed by the water for 30 seconds. Drain and squeeze out as much tomatoes. Transfer the pan to the oven for 1-2 minutes until of the water as possible. Place in a liquidiser with the warm. vegetable oil and purée for 3-4 minutes. 13. To serve, divide the courgettes, aubergines, artichokes, 2. The purée will take on the flavour and colour of the oil. Put peppers and tomatoes between four plates, arranging them the purée into a fine sieve and let the oil drip through into a neatly. Season with some salt and a squeeze of lemon juice. bowl. Set aside. 14. Place one fillet of sea bass per plate on top of the vegetables, 3. Blanch the courgettes in boiling salted water, then refresh trickle some of the basil oil around the vegetables and serve and drain. immediately.

INGREDIENTS • 4 sea bass fillets • 8 baby artichokes, prepared and cooked then cut in half • 2 red peppers, roasted, skinned and cut into 8 pieces • 8 cherry tomatoes, blanched • 1 tbsp of olive oil • salt & pepper • 1 shallot, finely chopped • 1 garlic clove, crushed • 1/2 tsp herbes de Provence • 1 courgette, cut into 2mm dice • 1/2 aubergine, cut into 2mm dice • 1 flat mushroom, cut into 2mm dice • 2 spinach leaves, cut into very thin strips • 2 tomatoes, skinned, de-seeded and diced • 1 handful of breadcrumbs • 2 courgettes, cut in half lengthways with the centre scooped out • 4 baby aubergines • 200g of basil

Wine Pairing Sea bass and Chablis is a great match. The wine shows great citrus notes from the fruit and light vanilla, via the oak, adding to the fish by creating complexity. The citrus and vanilla also add a gentle note to the herbs and savoury flavour of the fish. You could also try a nice unoaked Chardonnay which tends to bring a clean, refreshing element to the fish and vegetables in this lovely Summer-inspired dish.

MINISTRY OF SOUND MARBELLA COLLECTION 2017

FORBIDDEN

It’s every parents worst nightmare played out in this gripping thriller by acclaimed ‘Code Black’ writer and director Luis Prieto. The plot centres around a typical afternoon in the park that turns into a nightmare for single mum Karla Dyson (played by Oscar winning ‘Monster’s Ball’ actress Halle Berry) when her son suddenly disappears. Without a mobile phone on her and knowing she has no time to wait for police help, Karla jumps in her own car and sets off in pursuit of the kidnappers. A relentless chase ensues, as Karla must risk everything to not lose sight of her son. In this tense, action-fueled thriller from the producers of ‘Salt’ and ‘Transformers’, it shows one mother's heroic attempt to take back her son leading her to ask herself how far she will go to save her child. Without giving too much away there are some great plot twists and turns. This film will literally have you on the edge of your seat. The film was shot in New Orleans and has some beautiful scenery as well as the added bonus of spectacular chase scenes with amazing stunts and special effects. Released on August 4, it’s a good thriller for anyone of any age. ROCKS RATING:

Until a night out with friends brings her face to face with the mysterious Jack. It's not just a spark that ignites between them, it's an explosion. Jack promises to consume Annie, and he fully delivers on that promise. Overwhelmed by the intensity of their one night together, Annie slips out of their hotel room. NIKKI BEACH

The world famous luxurious beach club was originally founded in 1998 when entrepreneur Jack Penrod opened up his first Nikki Beach location in Miami. alking about his brand Penrod said, "Our goal was to create a high-end global brand, so that when people see our tipi, they can know to expect five-star service and our casual atmosphere." After the huge popularity and success of the beach club, in 2002 Penrod chose St. Tropez as the next location shortly followed by St. Barts and Marbella. There are now a total of 13 beach club locations worldwide including Dubai, Koh Samui and Monte Carlo. Marbella Rocks had the pleasure of catching up with Rene Schaefer to find out all of the plans for Nikki Beach Marbella this summer season and beyond.

T

We’re excited to hear about the upcoming Summer events such as ‘Sounds of Summer’ can you give us the inside scoop at what’s happening at this event?

How did the white themed party go on 25 May?

And what about H2OH!?

Sounds of Summer is a series of events which will be taking place on the first three Wednesdays of August. We will be featuring Danny Howard, Sandy Rivera and Phillip George for these events. Music and Entertainment is one of our 6 elements, and we are really excited to incorporate these talented artists to deliver these long awaited shows. Remember at Nikki Beach Marbella #MusicSoundsBetterWIthYou.

Our Nikki Beach White Party this year was a success. The feedback we received on the food, decoration, entertainment and organisation was very positive. It take’s a lot of effort to put together such a renowned event that has grown extensively in the past few years and I am so grateful to the entire team for pulling it off bigger and better.

H2OH! Is our ultimate pool party festival, apart from the event in July, we will also be celebrating this in August, on the 19th. We will be transforming our design and décor to the perfect summer party with specially designed refreshing cocktails and ambience to keep you in the perfect #SummerStateofMind.

How did you incorporate the circus theme into it?

Desert Dance will be taking place once again at Nikki Beach on August 12th and really sets a completely different atmosphere at Nikki Beach Marbella. The event is inspired by the Burning Man Festival in the United States. We will be showing some great artwork, very interesting decorations and a team that will be all dressed up.

We started with a touch of magic from our entrance, which was a designed as the face of a clown. We included different acts of acrobatic entertainment, as we wanted to showcase the types of fun and enjoyment that people would experience at a circus. Additionally, our team was dressed up to perfectly fit the theme, from clothing to make up. Our Chefs joined in as they added a magical touch to the presentation of the food that was served on the night.

Who came up with the idea for the first world famous white party?

There are many different variations of the first white party and how it started, ours particularly started with the birthday of Naomi Campbell in Nikki Beach St Tropez where she asked that everyone be dressed in white. From this day, all of our locations have joined in on creating an annual Nikki Beach White Party.

There are so many ‘copycat’ white parties out there now – what makes yours the best?

Nikki Beach is known for being a luxury beach club that throws legendary parties of all sorts of themes. As we are the original beach club, I think that gives us an advantage. More than anything, it really is our team that makes us the best, without them there is no show for our guests that we value so much. We are all very invested in providing the true “celebration of life” vibe.

36 MARBELLAROCKS | ISSUE 33

And Desert Dance sounds very intriguing?

You also celebrate national days and culture with events like Dutch Day and Belgium Day and. How important is it for you to respect the multi-cultural inhabitants of Marbella?

These National Day theme parties are a lot of fun as we get to pay tribute to our team and guests from these countries. It is a great feeling to see everyone so patriotic. We are a company and team of many cultures so it is very important for us to respect the different nationalities present at Nikki Beach.

Tell us about some of the other amazing events you have planned for over summer?

All our events are amazing in their own way, as they each bring something different to our club. Of course our ongoing Amazing Sundays is a great day to experience as they feature all of our signature music, entertainment and good vibes. In addition to that we are in the process of getting everything ready for our Red Party.

Do you have anything going on for the people who don’t necessarily like to go to parties? Guests can always join in during the day for a lunch and enjoy the vibe; other options would be to visit us on days when we do not

have events taking place, which is during the week. We also have dinners on Thursday, Friday and Saturday until the end of August.

of flavours in this section is amazing and we are proud to feature these super foods.

What’s unique about the experience at Nikki Beach compared to the other beach clubs on the coast?

Your extensive cocktail list looks amazing, what can you recommend our readers to try?

Different to other beach clubs we have 14 locations worldwide over 4 different continents. Our story is true; our ethos of “celebrating life” is something that everyone who visits will feel. As mentioned before, our team makes the difference; we provide a service like no other. You can enjoy our good vibes, fantastic music and delicious food but without the team and their service and passion, it is just that.

Nikki Beach is a celeb fave hangout, what’s the biggest celeb you’ve had in your Marbella location? Eva Longoria, Lionel Richie and Michelle Rodriguez.

Nikki Prive launched last year, what are the plans for your new evening venue this summer?

Nikki Prive is a great space within our location; we are currently using it for Private Events and a Dinner under the stars this summer.

Nikki Beach is famed for having fantastic food – what are the best dishes on the menu in your opinion?

Like the chef, I am a fan of our “By the Sea” platter; it is a fun dish that really gets heads turning when brought to the table. Our new healthy corner featuring delicious salads is also a new favourite; they are very refreshing for this hot summer season.

We hear you’re launching a healthy corner this summer, can you tell our readers more about it?

More and more people around the world are health conscious; we want our guests to feel good at all times. Through this section, we feel we are achieving just that. The variety of different options and fusion

I would recommend our Marbella Dry Gin. It is a cocktail full of flavours. It is beautifully presented, so makes a perfect picture for social media and it is refreshing for the summer, of course I have to add our World Famous Mojito which we make like no other place can.

Do you have the most expensive dish in Spain?! (The caviar is €1,400)

Our Admirals Boat can make that list, it is sold at 1,500€.

The closing red party is in October – can you tell us what you have in store for that? We cannot share too many details about this event, but what I can share is that it is inspired by the Vintage Parisian Lifestyle and it will be epic!

Are there any plans for anymore Nikki Beach locations globally?

We will be opening Nikki Beach Barbados later on this year and are all very excited about that.

What are your plans for 2018 at Nikki Beach Marbella?

We want to provide even better food and service to our valued guests, providing unforgettable memories as we celebrate life and make it contagious everyday.

Can you give us any inside gossip?

Nikki Beach gossip, well we have opened a corporate office in Marbella, this will be the corporate office for all of Europe. And we are looking forward to celebrating the opening of Barbados!

It is definitely scorching at Marbella Rocks Towers this month. We have had the pleasure to rub shoulders (unfortunately nothing else) with the Grammy award winning, vocally talented, ‘former’ long-haired 90’s lothario Michael Bolton - who we have to say is a true gentleman and a great interviewee. Michael has had an amazing career spanning 4 decades and sold 53 million albums worldwide. Read on to find out during this exclusive interview why the locks had to go and how he turned from an Ozzy Osbourne loving headbanger into the iconic, global superstar he is today Are you looking forward to performing at the Puente Romano on August 10th?

Of course! How could I not. The people and place are beyond beautiful and it's been too long.

In your early career you were into Black Sabbath and hard rock – are you pleased you didn’t get into that genre of music now?

Funny you should say that. There is actually an urban myth going round (as we call it) that I auditioned for Black Sabbath and opened for them. I didn’t! Although I was a huge fan and I did meet with Ted Nugent once. But my focus after my early band Black Jack became on my own solo career.

So what made you decide to turn from a hard rock singer into a soft rock/ballad singer then? It was actually a pivotal moment in my life when the president at Columbia Records at the time, Al Teller, called me into his office and shared with me a fascinating story. He had discovered that all the female secretaries around the company were listening to the demo tapes that I was singing on for the songs I was writing for other artists like the Pointer Sisters, Joe Cocker, Kenny Rogers, Patti Labelle, Peabo Bryson. These were mostly ballads that I’d written and the ladies apparently really liked hearing my voice when it wasn’t covered up by a wall of sound like in the rock productions. So Teller told me the next album we were going to make together was going to be made up of

48 MARBELLAROCKS | ISSUE 33

songs I was writing but now keeping for myself. Sure enough, that next album became my first score and changed my life.

What is the favourite song you have ever written and why?

That’s like asking me who my favourite child is! Impossible to answer but I can say that one of the most important songs I have ever written was: “How Am I Supposed to Live Without You”. When that single went to #1 for Laura Branigan, it truly solidified me as a coveted songwriter in the industry and then when I later recorded it myself and it not only went to #1 but also earned me my first Grammy for Best Pop Male Vocalist, my whole career as an artist took off.

Congrats. And what will be the biggest crowd pleaser on August 10th in your opinion?

I don’t want to give it away, but there is a surprise we do for the audience to “When a Man Loves a Woman” and there’s also a beloved aria I perform which always gets a standing ovation.

Can you tell our readers about your new ‘Songs of Cinema’ album?

The “Songs of Cinema” concept is the most beloved songs from the most iconic movies of all time. I’ve always been a huge fan of the movies. I love all the classics from ‘Casablanca’ to ‘The Wizard of Oz’. And then I’m always watching movies on planes and you can

imagine how many hours I clock in flight as I tour around the world. I’m always noticing the score and songs choices in films and I’ve also written and recorded for soundtracks like ‘Go the Distance’ for Disney’s feature film ‘Hercules’.

So you are hard rock, Disney and ballads combined, such an amazing repertoire. What have you been doing recently?

I recently wrote and recorded the title song to ‘Fathers and Daughters’ a film starring Russell Crowe and Amanda Seyfried. When we had the opportunity to make a special for Netflix (“Michael Bolton’s Big Sexy Valentine’s Day Special”), I was very excited about finding creative ways to integrate music into the show, so many of the songs from the album are in the special. This helps the music reach a very wide audience all around the world. What’s really fun about the repertoire we’ve chosen for this album is that it is very diverse - from R&B to Pop and Rock and Standards - but also very recognisable well-known songs, so when I perform the new songs live at my concerts, the audience will already know them!

You have performed alongside some legends like Luciano Pavarotti and Ray Charles – who has inspired you the most? There really are no words to adequately convey the musical value of these two legends. All I can say is they were and remain heroes of mine and had a tremendous influence on myself as well as so many others. Ray Charles

ISSUE 33 | MARBELLAROCKS

is probably the single most influential artist on me as an artist. And Pavarotti took my singing to a whole new level of comprehension, endurance and strength. I am honoured to do my part in keeping their legacy alive to the extent that I can continue to record and perform their songs live for audiences around the world and share stories of my humbling experience performing with each of them.

What made you decide to chop off your trademark locks? It was just time! Enough wasted water, haha.

How do you cope with all the adoration from your female fans?

Cope is a strange word to use but thanks! I adore all my fans and am so grateful for their ongoing support and loyalty. How am I supposed to live without them!

Great answer especially when you sing it. Is there a ‘special someone’ in your life right now?

There are many special people in my life, my three daughters and their children, and I’m lucky to have dear friends.

What do you look for in a woman?

Everything! Understanding, support, affection, humour, kindness, passion, honesty, a big heart and a deep soul and true friendship and a real love of life.

What are you planning to do with your free time here in Marbella? There's never much free time when I'm touring. One day I'll definitely have to vacation here.

THE GLAMOUR OF MARBELLA Marbella in the past couple of years has undergone a remarkable resurgence and is once again regarded as one of the top tourist destinations in Europe, being crowned as the jewel of the Mediterranean and labelled ‘the playground to Europe’s rich and famous’.

Discovered by the international jet set back in the late fifties. The Marbella Club was built in 1954 by Alfonso de Hohenlohe as a private residence, where he invited royalty, influential business associates and his social peers from Europe and The United States. In the late 1970´s he redeveloped the property to become the Marbella Club as we know it today. In reality, due to its glamourous appeal, Marbella with the fabulous climate, guarantees both visitors and residents the relaxing environment for which The Costa del Sol is renowned for over five decades. Marbella boasts 320 days of sunshine each year together with its unique micro-climate and numerous sundrenched beaches. Subsequently there are an abundance of Five Star hotels to accommodate the multitude of visitors; the two principal ones being the opulent Marbella Club and her sister hotel, The Puente Romano which indeed continues to draw footfall from affluent individuals, celebrities and royalty throughout the year. Indeed the Marbella Club even in

52 MARBELLAROCKS | ISSUE 33

its early days attracted a starstudded guest list including Audrey Hepburn, Cary Grant, Grace Kelly, Ava Gardner and Brigitte Bardot. They are situated within a minutes’ walk to the tree-lined paseos, snaking along the Mediterranean coast. Whilst doing this you will experience the smell of sardines cooking on open fires at one of their many beach side chiringuitos, the chinking of glasses, the sun, sea, surf, and sangria, all adding to the relaxing ‘Manana attitude´. Then of course there are the plethora of beach clubs which are dotted along the coastline from San Pedro to Elviria. The crème de la crème include El Ancla renowned for serving the best flame grilled sardines and boasts the largest sea water pool on the Costa del Sol. Nearby is Bora Bora, Plaza Beach and The Ocean Club where those with substantial budgets can spend a glorious day in their VIP Square which costs an eye-watering 675 Euros and comes with a 3 Litre bottle of Champagne. The Marbella Beach

Club which irrefutably lays out the best seafood buffet and for those who wish to enjoy traditional Spanish cuisine with a quick stroll across the paseo, the Club also has its own chiringuito. Further up the coast just down from the Don Carlos Hotel is the world famous Nikki Beach famed for its White Opening and Red Closing Parties. Marbella has over the last fifty years and continues to this day to be the favoured celebrity hotspot for holidaying here. Celebrities who have been spotted here include Hugh Grant, Mel Gibson, Lady Gaga, Jeremy Clarkson, Meghen McKenna of TOWIE Fame, Sylvester Stallone, Jason Statham, Wesley Snipes, Michelle Obama, Shirley Bassey, Eva Longoria, Spanish actor and artist Jordi Molla and Simon Cowell, who I was fortunate to be granted an interview with, Hollywood heart throb Andy Garcia and Prince Harry. Also not forgetting long-time resident and stalwart ambassador for Marbella; Antonio Banderas. These are among the many other ‘A list’ stars who regard this golden coast as a home-from-home during the spring and summer season. Marbella has also become an integral destination for famous music artists to perform especially during what has now become the world famous

Starlite Festival together with one night show-stopping performances at the aforementioned Puente Romano Hotel. This year’s line-up includes Julio Iglesias who has a palatial mansion here, Andrea Bocelli, Elton John, The Pretenders and Anastacia to name but a few. The Puente Romano is hosting George Benson and Michael Bolton. Plus, Marbella’s nightclubs have an array of top talent too including Paris Hilton and Jason Derulo at Mirage and Craig David at La Sala’s Aqwa Mist. Certainly no shortage of entertainment for those lovers of watching their music idols live on stage. Regarding Real Estate here for the last eighteen months Marbella has seen an increase in property prices across the board. In August 2014, Hello Magazine stated that ‘Marbella has been voted the top destination for celebrities and the jet set and is now being labelled as Spain’s Beverly Hills. In addition, J.S. Marcus of The Wall Street Journal, recently wrote that ‘The ritzy, sun-soaked Spanish coastal city of Marbella is beginning to resemble Southern California more than Southern Spain.’ Subsequently the boom in the luxury property market in Marbella now mirrors the glamour and recent reformation it exudes with a large influx of celebrities actively looking for property to buy on the Costa del Sol and will see a further increase in high earning buyers gracing the Spanish shores to do the same especially as the Marbella Property market is rebounding from its depressed state of recent years,

much to the relief of Marbella Real Estate agents and the overall economy of the Costa del Sol. So, a solid platform for the inevitable return to boom times in the Marbella property market is almost complete. With property prices still below 2006 levels a substantial increase in residential property prices across the board is expected in the coming years. Although the recovery is already in full swing and some new developments are selling off-plan, there is still an abundance of attractive, competitively priced properties for sale in all price brackets. Bargains can still be found. For those interested in investment, the prospect of capital appreciation is supplemented by a strong rental market offering high returns on investment. Since Brexit and the fact that with the pound against the sterling being almost at parity now is irrefutably the time to invest. How very refreshing for the discerning buyer. Such is its appeal now the exclusive residential areas such as Marbella’s La Zagaleta and El Madronal are now the preferred areas where Sting, Vladimir Putin and Rod Stewart stay whilst visiting Marbella. Antonio Banderas, Simon Cowell and Prince have all brought villas here too. For those who have substantial income have in recent

years heavily invested in properties along The Golden Mile, Sierra Blanca and Sotogrande with price tags to match. However multi-millionaire Sir Michael Smurfit, KBE has decided to depart these shores and placed his vast Marbella villa on the market for a staggering 80 million Euros. However with the majority of buyers here they are safe in the knowledge that their investment will grow in stature with the continuing appeal with not only the elegance of this glorious jewel in the heart of the Costa del Sol, alongside the glitz and the glamour, Marbella is now akin to a phoenix rising from the ashes spreading its wings emanating the fact that Marbella is now once again irrefutably regarded as the principal European destinations for visitors, investors and retirees along the Mediterranean coast. Needless to say showing off their material status for many living or visiting here is vital. Their entrance or arrival is all important and nothing shows the personality of a person, whether famous, rich or understated, than the car or mode of transport in which they arrive. This competitive spirit is everpresent in both locations and needless to say, whilst either walking alongside the marina in Puerto Banus or along The Golden Mile or Riccardo Soriano the latest top of the range sports cars are always in public view. Aston Martins, Ferraris, Lamborghinis, Bentleys, Porsches and more are never out of sight or sound. Marbella realising this huge demand has opened its arms wide to greet this arena of hedonistic big boy toys. Therefore, if price is not a concern, it is possible to find any vehicle whether it be on land or sea to buy or rent. Last

year C. de Salamanca, located in San Pedro de Alcantara, (near Marbella) was voted the chosen showroom by UK car Company Jaguar, to unveil their latest model - The Jaguar XE. Like cars, houses and hotels, shopping is extremely important to the wealthy traveler and there is no compromise made in Marbella. Puerto Banus, regarded as the Rodeo Drive of Southern Spain, is hailed as a Mecca for the discerning shopper. The Port over the last few years has undergone a major luxury facelift and now sees over 4 million visitors visiting this exclusive seaside mall of the most well-known global brands. All of the major names are on parade and even the most seasoned of retail therapists, will not be disappointed. Brands include: Gucci, Chanel, Agent Provocateur, Brioni,

Bulgari, Cartier, Dolce & Gabbana, Ermenegildo Zegna, Fendi, Louis Vuitton, Versace, Jimmy Choo, Tods, Burberry, Salvatore Ferragamo and La Perla among many others. In a nutshell, Marbella is now back on the map of top European tourist destinations. The beaches are clean and well maintained. There is an abundance of restaurants from the ‘posh, must be seen’ to the aforementioned chiringuitos (typical Spanish beach bars) and ventas serving locally caught fish and beautiful tapas. The ‘old town’ is full of alfresco bars and is absolutely charming and Marbella’s night-life is never ending. On the other extreme, all sorts of sport facilities are on your doorstep including over 70 golf courses, the coast has not been nicknamed the ‘Costa Del Golf’ for nothing.

Pop singer Ricky Martin was a member of Menudo as a teenager and is known for such solo pop hits as "Livin' La Vida Loca" and "She Bangs.” It has just been announced that he is a headline act for MTV Gibraltar Calling. Born December 24, 1971, in San Juan, Puerto Rico, Ricky Martin began appearing in commercials at age six. He was a member of teen singing group Menudo until he turned 18. After finishing high school, he appeared on stage and television while also pursuing his solo music career. His debut English album and single were hugely successful. He continues to make music in both Spanish and English today.

TEEN SINGING SENSATION

Born Enrique Jose Martin Morales IV, he began appearing in commercials on local television around the age of six. He auditioned three times for the teen singing group Menudo before finally earning a spot in 1984. In his five years with Menudo, Martin toured around the world, singing in several languages. He reached the group's age limit of 18 in 1989, and returned to Puerto Rico just long enough to finish high school before moving to New York to pursue a solo acting and singing career. His debut solo album, Ricky Martin, was released in 1988 by the Sony Latin division, followed by a second effort, Me Amaras, in 1989.

LATINO STAR SHINES BRIGHT

At the Grammy Awards in February 1999, Martin, already a global pop sensation, gave a sizzling performance of "La Copa de la Vida" at Los Angeles's Shrine Auditorium just before picking up an award for Best Latin Pop Performance for Vuelve. He followed that star-making Grammy night with the release of his phenomenally successful first English single, "Livin' La Vida Loca." His album Ricky Martin debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard chart. Martin was also featured on the cover of Time magazine and credited with helping to bring a growing Latin cultural influence into the mainstream of American pop music

To add to the phenomenal popular success of his debut English album and single, Martin was nominated in four categories at the Grammy Awards, held in February 2000. Although he lost in all four categories—to veteran male pop artist Sting (Best Pop Album, Best Male Pop Vocal Performance) and Santana, the band led by resurgent guitarist Carlos Santana (Song of the Year, Record of the Year)—Martin delivered another red-hot live performance, a year after his triumphant Grammy debut. In November 2000, Martin released Sound Loaded, the much-anticipated follow-up album to Ricky Martin. Its hit single, "She Bangs," earned Martin yet another Grammy nomination, for Best Male Pop Vocal Performance. After Sound Loaded, Martin continued making music, both in Spanish and English. His greatest Spanish-language hits were compiled on La Historia in 2001. This was followed two years later by Almas del Silencio, which contained new material sung in Spanish. The album Life (2005) was his first Englishlanguage album since 2000. The album did reasonably well, reaching the top 10 of Billboard's album charts. Martin, however, has yet to be able to recapture the same level of pop success he achieved with previous albums.

ACCOMPLISHED ACTOR

Martin traveled to Mexico to appear in a stage musical; the gig led to a role as a singer on the 1992 Spanish-language telenovela, Alcanzar una Estrella, or To Reach a Star. The show proved so popular that he reprised the role in a movie version of the serial. In 1993, Martin moved to Los Angeles, where he made his American TV debut in the NBC sitcom Getting By. In 1995 he acted on ABC's daytime soap opera, General Hospital and in 1996 he starred in the Broadway production of Les Miserables. While Martin was actively pursuing his acting career, he was also recording and releasing albums and making concert appearances. He had become wellknown in his native Puerto Rico and among the Latin/Hispanic community as a whole. His third album, A Medio Vivir, came out in 1997, the same year that he lent his voice to the Spanish-

language version of Disney's animated feature, Hercules. His fourth album, Vuelve, released in 1998, featured the hit single, "La Copa de la Vida" ("The Cup of Life"), which Martin performed at the 1998 World Cup soccer tournament in France, as part of a showcase broadcast to 2 billion people around the world.

RECENT CAREER

Ricky Martin published his autobiography Me in 2010, which quickly turned into a best-seller. Around this time, he also teamed with Joss Stone for the duet single, "The Best Thing About Me Is You," which proved to be a minor hit. Martin soon released a new album of songs mostly in Spanish, Música + Alma + Sexo, which climbed almost to the top of the pop charts and became his latest No. 1 recording on the Latin charts. In 2012, Martin made a guest appearance on the high school musical series Glee. He also returned to Broadway that April for a revival of the hit musical Evita by Tim Rice and Andrew Lloyd Webber. He plays the role of Ché, who helps narrate the story of Eva Peron, one of Argentina's most legendary figures and wife to leader Juan Peron.

HIS PERSONAL LIFE

Martin is the father to two twin boys, Matteo and Valentino, born in 2008 to a surrogate. Once evasive about his private life, Ricky Martin came out in 2010 on his website. He wrote, "I am proud to say that I am a fortunate homosexual man. I am very blessed to be who I am." Martin explained that his decision to go public with his sexuality was inspired in part by his sons. During an appearance on Ellen DeGeneres's talk show in November 2016, Martin announced his engagement to Jwan Yosef, an artist who was born in Syria and raised in Sweden.

FANTASTIC

FOUR FITNESS ACTIVITIES NOT TO BE MISSED THIS SUMMER

T The newest edition to the booming fitness industry on the coast, Luke is owner and coach of Marbella´s first “women´s only outdoor boot camp company” – Miss Fit Marbella. Luke specialises in fitness for women, (weight loss and toning) and is a strong believer in training outdoors, which is why, all of his sessions are based on the beaches of Marbella, Puerto Banus and Nueva Andalucia. Expect to find articles that focus on exercise for the female sex, tips on how to achieve your body goals, help on those stubborn problem areas, education of nutrition and lifestyle and how exercise doesn’t have to be boring! “Don’t mistake fitness for a gym! Fitness is more than that, it is a lifestyle and can be anywhere or everywhere!”

78 MARBELLAROCKS | ISSUE 33

he sun is shining, you want to stay fit but the last thing you want to do is go to a stuffy Marbella gym without air conditioning. I am still yet to find one that has it! So, this month I decided to go and try out the best fitness activities Marbella and the coast has to offer. And here are my fantastic four recommendations! After you finish reading, get your imaginary coat, your kids, your partner, your friends, your sunblock and get ready to have an amazing time at 1 of the below, or why not try all of them. I guarantee you will not regret it.

MIKE'S GYM (ONE FOR THE HARDCORE SPORTISTAS) This was the first stop on my journey in finding the best activities Marbella has to offer. For anyone who doesn´t know, Mike's Gym is a simply incredible purpose built training facility that specialises in OCR (Obstacle Course Racing). I was met by super fit trainer Sorrel, who walked me through what

is known to be Europe´s TOUGHEST OCR Course and tried out some of the gruelling activities. You name it, I did it; I climbed, I ran, I jumped, I swung, I balanced, I lifted, I threw and I ended up in the water! I met Mike himself, the owner and creator of this amazing camp and he is as hardcore as the course. Known for his famous sayings, “don´t f**k about” & “do it like you mean it” I am

already hooked and booked in for the end of the month. Now there is something for everyone here but I recommend Mikes Gym for the more advanced sports lovers out there.

www.mikesgymmarbella.com )+34 606 609 906

A simple yet great way to stay fit this summer and the staff were so friendly and happy to help. Gilles took me out and we had such fun. I recommend this to anyone wanting a nice easy leisure activity or for those with kids.

www.g2move.com )+34 952 636 245

I BIKE MARBELLA (G2MOVE MARBELLA SEGWAY TOURS) (ONE FOR THE LEISURE LOVERS) My second stop was a well-deserved rest after I recovered from my first and I went to see I Bike Marbella. Since the paseo has been fully finished, it has been littered with people out running and biking and everywhere I look, I see the familiar sign of I Bike Marbella. So I went to try out their Segway and bicycle tours. I have not riden a bike since I was 18 years old and it´s true you never forget how! I realised how fun it was to ride and segway through Banus overlooking the beautiful beaches and people watch those sunning themselves in La Sala by The Sea and Ocean Club.

FIT4LIFE POLE DANCE MARBELLA (ONE FOR THE LADIES) Now this one I was nervous about! I have a few friends who go to Fit4Life and swear by it. So I have seen photos and I knew what to expect. I have also watched “Magic Mike” the film and in the back of my head, have thought if all else fails I will become a male pole dancer. (Surely I could do it?) Turns out I was massively wrong. Pole dancing; yes, is as owner Tyrenne describes; “...sexually liberating, emotionally cathartic and an exploration of self...” but is also; “an incredible core and upper body strength builder” not to mention you need flexibility, the ability to learn new skills, executing them and absolutely knackering. Tyrenne, who is utterly breath-taking when she dances, tried to teach me a few moves (See pictures – Big Fail!. What a fantastic atmosphere with superb teachers, who love what they do, just like the ladies dancing. The Fit4Life ethos

is... “But what if I fall? Oh but darling, what if you fly.” I am pushing for a male group but I urge, urge, urge, any women out there who want to keep fit, get strong and feel confident to join this quite amazing movement.

www.fit4lifemarbella.com )+34 687 101730

RANCH SIESTA LOS RUBIOS (ONE FOR EVERYONE) My last stop and when I asked on social media for initial suggestions, this one got the most recommendations. I was greeted by 7 beautiful, smiling faces all gathered around preparing Nero, my horse for the day. Ranging from 5 -16, these girls smothered me with knowledge about horses and riding.

At Ranch Siesta Los Rubios, the girls help muck out, train the horses, ride, feed, wash and water these majestic creatures, most of which have been rescued. As well as make up “Team Los Rubios” who compete in competitions. Paulina, gave me a 20 minute crash course and I was galloping before I knew it. Apparently I was a natural, or so the girls said. Even if I wasn´t, it was this friendly and encouraging team spirit that you cannot find anywhere else that I ultimately loved. Then to top off a brilliant day, Caroline the owner, along with two others, took me on a hack through the breathtaking scenery. This is a new experience for me and I highly recommend, whatever your age or your interests, to go and support this incredibly fun and welcoming ranch.

facebook.com/ranchsiesta )+34 645 415 697

The plan was to rank Marbella´s best BUT after experiencing 4 quite fabulously different activities, with enthusiastic staff, a plethora of different positives and ultimately realising I could not decide; I am leaving that job firmly up to you! Enjoy! 80

RESTAURANT REVIEW

I

n an era of easy come easy go restaurants, Noche is most definitely here to stay. The Pan-Asian influenced menu has been carefully thought out and has all the delights one would expect... and more. A further plus point of the Noche experience is its mixology. With a stunning horseshoe shaped amber-lit bar there is every drink imaginable to choose from. With time not on our side, being 9.30pm on a Tuesday evening, we asked our waiter to help us choose the best on offer. He

recommended the Moscow Mule cocktail, served in Noche’s famed copper cups and an Expresso Martini. Both were amazing, ten out of ten for presentation, taste and strength (yes cocktails need a kick - even a mule on a Tuesday night.)

Drinks more than covered, we were pleased to get stuck into the famous Noche food. Our tasters were pleased to see an abundance of Sushi dishes and were able to sample our favourite Salmon Rolls infused with avocado, mango and sticky rice – all the ingredients were fresh and beautifully presented on grey slate dishes with amazing side dips of chilli mayonnaise and wasabi. Tempura dishes are one of the most popular amongst our group – as Noche chefs had duly noted and given their own subsection. Thanks Nicholas Gomez Duran! As well as prawn, vegetable, mixed and meat there were others. We sampled the prawn which was very tasty and came with a choice of dips including Misou and Wasabi giving the dish an added kick. You can also try a range of amazing starters including Salt and Szechaun Pepper Calamari, Teriyaki Chicken Salad with Broccoli, Peas, Shallots and Yuzu Dressing and Vietnamese Duck Salad. Next up was our main course of Thai Chicken Curry on a bed of rice. The meat was succulent and plentiful and the curry had just the right amount of spice. Bordering on hot

(but well worth the spice risk) it exuded flavour and despite the portion size being plentiful we were gasping for more. On another recommendation we went for the main of Pork Belly with Cauliflower Puree, Endive Salad, Noche Tomato, Bacon and Chilli Jam with Noodles and Vegetables. The pork was tender and the vegetables cooked perfectly al dente – a great combination. If you are after a bit of evening entertainment there is a DJ every Thursday to Sunday night at Noche. Ben Whyte is the resident DJ and usually plays the Noche decks on Friday and Saturday nights. You can also see percussionists and drummers such as Pablo Melgar and Roberto Cantero livening up the house music on offer. Another point to mention is the impeccable service. On arrival to Noche you are greeted with a warm welcome. It’s less pretentious than other more stuffy Marbella venues yet the service is unrivalled and the staff are always on hand to help without being too overbearing. Our cocktail waiter immediately suggested our favourite apperatifs.

Our guests were greeted by Noche manager Matty Katerzabek, who used to work under celebrity chef Marco Pierre White at his top Birmingham based Marco Pierre White Steakhouse, Bar and Grill Restaurant at the Cubes before he was headhunted to run Fuel then Noche.

He is a true gent and a very witty, entertaining character and we have to say a testament to the service and experience you will have when dining out at Noche. Catch him in a dapper suit and matching waistcoat. If you spot him makes sure he joins you for a glass of wine! All in all a well deserved 5 out of 5 rating for Noche.

tan lines

With temperatures soaring, a lot of people are outside enjoying the sunshine and attempting to top up their tans. A few, however, fail to protect themselves with sun cream, and are now paying the price with painful burn marks and dodgy tan lines. These pictures, compiled from around the web, are a warning to us all not to get too carried away. From flip flop marks to striped legs and even stray hand prints across stomachs, these sunburn fails are proof that sometimes it's better to stay pale and interestinG.

A lot of tops and bikinis have intricate detailing on them which don't work well in the sun

This sun worshiper needs to lather on the aftersun and stay indoors for the remainder of summer

This person might have wanted a tan but they were left with a rather red upper body instead

He might have been sensible and covered up his body in the sun, but this man forgot to protect his face

Some people will go to great lengths in pursuit of a laugh - like this would-be superhero

Ouch! This girl needs a lifetime supply of aloe vera to take the sting out of that sunburn

When it's hot outside, it's probably wise not to wear a backwards cap on your head

The perfect ring around his leg makes it look as though is wearing a pair or bright pink trousers

If you want to show off your legs in the sun, it might be best to lather on the lotion first

This picture is a reminder that you should never fall asleep in the sun with your arms across your body

This woman managed to achieve a golden brown tan - but only on the tops of her thighs

Bad tan lines don't just affect women, it can happen to men in vests jogging on the beach too

130 MARBELLAROCKS | ISSUE 33

This woman has forgotten to remove a bowl and spoon from her legs and the sun has had its revenge

This man has achieved a golden brown tan on top but his legs must have been hidden away

This photograph demonstrates another of the many reasons Crocs are to be avoided

He might have spent hours working out to show off his body, but after this, he might want to cover himself up again

His right hand might be pointing in one direction but the hand on his chest seems to be pointing in another

This man proves that we should be careful of the sun - and of the friends we have around us

From the look on this man's face, he doesn't seem to have realised until it was too late that he was getting burned

This man has got a seriously painful looking case of sunburn to deal with

This person attempted to lather on the lotion, but there were parts of his body his hands couldn't reach

This person has decided lobster red is the new golden brown after a day in the sun

The top part of her body might be brown but the lower half doesn't seem to have tanned as well

It's not just swimwear that can leave dodgy tan lines, strappy sandals can too

This man has a long way to go in pursuit of an even, golden tan

This sunseeker has managed to burn themselves and create a pretty pattern at the same time

24 JULY – 23 AUG

Taurus

Cancer

Virgo

21 APR – 20 MAY

22 JUNE – 23 JULY

24 AUG – SEPT 3

Time for courage, bravery and a little boldness, Aries. But then, isn’t bold usually your middle name? When it comes to love or lovers, fortune favours the brave this month and that includes having the courage to let something go you just know isn’t right for you – or just refusing to compromise when it comes to who or what your heart knows is right for you. Going for Mr. or Ms ‘S/he’ll do’ will be a recipe for misery. So – don’t go there and ‘settle’. Aim for passion. When it comes to what’s happening closer to home don’t be surprised if areas where you and family members don’t see eye to eye get more pronounced. Here is where the art of compromise may be called for even if all you can do is agree to disagree. You might want to discourage visitors from staying too long if you want to avoid conflict however. Spending money on turning your home into somewhere love wants to spend time pays dividends. It could just move in and not move out.

Your home is your castle or should be and time to instigate changes to make it or create just that. This isn’t about building castles in the air but about a sustainable lifestyle for you. Are you living the lifestyle you truly want? Often we dream of something but realise we don’t want to make the changes that would be necessary in order for us to have it. This month asks: What are you waiting for? If something has been missing from your life, August highlights this in some way. You may feel you’ve just been spinning your wheels or carrying on because things are ‘sort of okay’. Suddenly that’s not okay any longer and the prospect of continuing is no longer an option. You’re willing to do whatever it may take to create that change even if it doesn’t make you popular with certain people. Maybe you’ve had a dream you’ve kept hidden from yourself and buried deep just because you thought it impossible to live or achieve. Get ready as this month will send you headlong towards it if you’re just willing to take that first, small step.

To quote John Mayer – ‘Say what you need to say’ this August. Say what you mean and mean what you say. How you choose to say it is up to you and really, you have all kinds of channels to choose from. If you’ve a book, blog or even vlog idea bursting to get out there, now is the time to launch it. Pitches, projects, publishing, studying – all these areas are yours to explore and may even take on an international flavour. For others short trips – either in duration or distance, open up new horizons even in your own neighbourhood and if you’re looking for love, you may not have to go too far to find it. It’s a month for striking out and weaving a little bit of magic with something only you can say and being aware of opportunities that are right outside your front door or woven into your daily routine. The lesson this month is in the revelation that you already have access to everything you need to get anything you want. Sometimes what we seek is hidden in plain sight and we only have to adjust our focus to reveal it. The power of words is yours to command now. Walk your talk.

Back in black? Money matters this month with your finances, salary, net-and-self-worth and how you feel about all these things come in focus. Have a plan and work on that relationship you have with your money – and the material world. Like it or not, we are living in it and all need a certain amount of the folding stuff to get by. You could be looking at gains such as a new source of income, salary increase or signing that big client. Or else find yourself in the red due to lack or planning or forethought. It may not be about how much cash you have but more about how you feel about what you do have. Bear in mind that some people can have millions and it is never enough while others are happy with what could be considered relatively little. Where do you sit on that spectrum? Prepare for something around money or finances to be revealed to you. This could range from anything from a new money making venture to realising you have a resource or a talent you are just not tapping into. Understanding what money can and cannot buy you also has a role to play here. You’ve outgrown all your old ideas around money that have been holding you back from true abundance. Ditch those money hang-ups this August and bank on a new investment – you.

132 MARBELLAROCKS | ISSUE 33

Are you ready for a different kind of love, Leo? Powerful eclipses could see you ready to embrace a new relationship dynamic or else quite literally a lover like no other. If you thought you had a ‘type’ – that may go out the window now as your attention and possibly your heart, is snagged by someone dramatically different to anyone you have encountered in the past. You could just discover what you need as opposed to what you thought you wanted. That could even be your present partner which leads you into a new cycle of better relating and appreciation. Other Leos find their royal socks well and truly knocked-off by someone whose differences they just can’t help but love. The end difference being that if you always do things the same way or fall for the same type of person, you are always going to end up with the same result. You now have the opportunity to step past all that. Single? Fate may actually place this paramour of all things quirky and different directly in your path right where you would never have expected to find them. Ain’t love a surprise this month.

Revelations are likely this month as something that has been hidden is revealed. Now, I hope your life is an open book Virgo as if you have been engaged in anything under-handed or clandestine you may find yourself outed in some way or another or left with a lot of explaining to do. People reveal their true colours now and you may not like what you see as a result. Anything that has been kept from you, hidden from you – and this includes things you have kept from yourself, will be dragged out into the cold light of day. This is all on a ‘Need to know’ basis and the universe is telling you that you need to know. Delusion, illusion and denial offer no refuge now and to tell yourself ‘This can’t be true’ or ‘This isn’t happening’ will only make things worse. If it looks like I am painting an all-too-gloomy picture of the lead-up to your birthday, take heart from the knowledge that whatever comes to light is designed to liberate you from something that is holding you back. You will see something in a very different light by the month’s end and be lighter for it. Don’t look away. The truth will set you free.

Time to get yourself noticed and to explore new groups, contacts, networks and all the opportunities these may bring you, Libra. This is not time to be shy. Explore new connections and network as one of the contacts you make now could turn out to be truly beneficial for you in ways you may not yet be able to imagine. People from different walks of life, professions and backgrounds may cross your path as well as those who have radical and even game-changing ideas. This is a month to join that UFO-ology group if that’s your thing, launch that idea you’ve been sitting on or seek crowdfunding. The entrepreneurial side of you surfaces and success in all endeavours comes from being unapologetically yourself. This is not a time to imitate others or be a ‘Yes’ woman or man. Neither is it time to blend in or fit in. Own whatever it is that makes you ‘you’. Whether it’s a dream job or a dream date you’re after, go forth with the knowledge that someone out there is looking for someone exactly like you – and no one else.

An opportunity could present itself that calls for you to change direction or venture into unexplored territory. If you’ve been stuck in a career rut you could face the choice of staying in it – or striking out. This calls for courage but if you don’t stretch yourself you’ll never discover just what you are capable of. And right now that’s more than you dreamed possible. If you’re unsure what direction to head in then choose the one that puts you centre stage, means taking a leadership role or else just feels fun. It’s time to accept a challenge or two and know you are fully capable of realising that dream. Bear in mind however that opportunity doesn’t wait around for the faint-hearted. This offer is time-sensitive and you should act while the iron is hot or opportunity will move in another direction. Does it feel slightly scary? Does your heart race but in a good way when you think about doing it? Afraid you might fall flat on your face and make a fool of yourself in front of those you are trying so desperately to impress? What you have is good old-fashioned stage fright. Every star experiences this at least once in their career before going on to give the performance of a lifetime. Be a star now.

Pack your bags and have your passport at the ready. A brave new world is yours to explore now, Sag. Travel of the real or the metaphorical kind awaits as a journey of discovery beckons. Even if you can’t get away right now, expect dealings with people from overseas or who just seem larger than life somehow. However, for many - exotic and far off locations could beckon and this month is a fantastic time to plan that trip of a lifetime even if you can’t actually embark on it right away. This is one of those times when even if all you do is plan, the likelihood of those plans coming to fruition are very high indeed. Taking advantage of new beginnings means thinking big. Pay close attention to those dreams you put away – perhaps because you decided they were impossible to achieve. Now could be the time to unpack them and see them as signposts you can follow to live up to all those possibilities. They could also contain important clues as to what is missing from your life – and the direction you need to go in to find it. Accept any and all invitations that come your way now – especially if they take you out of your comfort zone. That’s where the magic happens.

Take a walk on the wild side this August, Capricorn. What you share with others, your salary, joint finances and power – who has it and who wields it, especially in relationships, brings about transformations. What you focus on will also have an unnerving habit of turning up. This includes what you desire as well as what you fear. Funny how sometimes these can be one and the same thing. August sees you become an attraction magnet and in attracting what you focus on you have the opportunity to exercise your personal power in the choices you make. Are you ready to do that? A romantic attraction could be intense and difficult to resist. Not that you may want to. Work could offer up more responsibility – are you ready to accept it? You could also benefit from someone’s generosity as they put anything from their time, resources, money or connections at your disposal. People in positions of power or influence or who are even in the public eye could play a role. Do you secretly dream of being in a similar role? This month could contain an invitation to join them. Whatever you focus on now, whether you love it or fear it, has been thought about by you. That’s your power.

A new beginning in a relationship or a partnership reminds you of the Power of Love this August. Singles could be looking at the start of something special with someone who has just that touch of magic or glamour about them. Others could see their existing relationship plunge into exciting new territory. It’s all about togetherness, twosomes and partnerships and some of you may end up exploring more than one kind of togetherness as business and collaborative partnerships also offer opportunities for exploration and success. If you’ve been flying solo, now is the time to make a concentrated effort to find someone with whom to explore the Power of Two. This can even be a close, long term friendship or activity partner. If you’re looking for romance and are offered a chance to collaborate or participate in a project or activity instead, don’t knock it back. The message is that when two people come together aligned in a single purpose it’s all love. No one type of love is ‘better’ than another. Get ready to embrace togetherness in whatever form it appears in. It takes two and one of them is going to be you this month, Aquarius.

Work, health, diet, wellbeing, your routine and your body, all come into focus as you see just what you may have been ignoring and what is right under your nose. They say old habits die hard but experts tell us that it takes very little time for things to become a habit and for us to get stuck in a routine – about 66 days or just over two months to be exact. This can work for us or against us when the habit or the routine turns out to be a trap or no longer to our benefit. Tired of the same old, same old? August could offer up a new job for some as one way to break from the rut. If you’re stuck doing the time warp on some level, small changes to your daily routine such as trying a new way to get to work, getting off one stop early and walking, or even choosing different products when you shop, can result in speeding up the process as it tells the universe you are ready for something different. If you’ve lost your inner sparkle of late and feel as a result slightly tarnished, this month restores that lustre and sees you being noticed again for all the right reasons. In another 66 days the routine you create now may just mean a bold, beautiful new you. Get your kicks on Routine 66.

LAUREN STONE Lauren is one of the original cast members of ITV Be reality show ‘The Real Housewives of Cheshire.’ She has a new perfume out this month called Lauren Stone – Number 1 and is currently wrapping up Season 5 of the hit reality TV show. Marbella Rocks caught up with her during a recent visit to Marbella in this exclusive 60 Second interview. What is it like starring on the ‘Real Housewives’ and how do you handle the fame? It’s been an amazing journey that I’ve been lucky enough to experience. I can handle the fame no problem. Is it as bitchy as the show makes out? Yes but there is a lot of fun as well. When the camera stops rolling we all go out. If you could take one cast member away on a girly getaway – who would it be and why? Dawn Ward – because we really get along. If ITV told you that you had to axe one cast member - who would it be and why? No response! If you could only take three things to a desert island what would they be? Liquid eyeliner, suncream and a knife. What´s your greatest achievement so far? My children. Best advice you’ve ever been given? Live everyday like it is your last. What all our male readers want to know, are you single? No comment! What do you look for in a guy? Nice teeth and a good sense of humour.

Funniest pick up line used on you? (Motioning towards them with finger) If I can make you come with one finger, think what I can do with my whole body. Worst habit? I have no attention span and can be quite dismissive. What did you want to be growing up? Famous. What couldn't you live without? My black eyeliner. What made you to decide to launch your new fragrance? My love of expensive perfumes and face creams. My grandma always wore beautiful perfumes and she died at the age of 99. Has it been well received? Yes most people are saying how good it is. Is it called ‘Lauren Stone – Number 1’ because there will be more? Of course! Do you have a pet rabbit that you walk on a lead? (read on a report!) Yes, well my kids had the pet rabbit but she’s gone to a new home now. Best thing about Marbella My balcony! I also love the restaurants, the weather and the shops.
