Celebrities STING IN HIS TAIL

A

s one of the world’s most successful rock stars with a reported €200m fortune, you’d expect the former ‘Police’ front man to be more generous to his nearest and dearest.

But apparently not. Sting, 62, has said his three sons and three daughters will have to earn their own way in life as he is planning to spend most of his fortune! In a recent interview with The Guardian, Sting said, “I certainly don’t want to leave them trust funds that are albatrosses round their necks. They have to work. All my kids know that and they rarely ask me for anything, which I really respect and appreciate. Obviously, if they were in trouble I would help them, but I’ve never really had to do that. They have the work ethic that makes them want to succeed on their own merit.” There are apparently 100 people on Sting’s current payroll and “as money comes in it goes straight back out again”, he claims. So its not like the ‘Roxanne’ singer is being stingy. Sting is not the only celebrity who expects their children to stand on their own two feet. Celebrity chef Nigella Lawson said recently, “I am determined that my children should have no financial security. It ruins people not having to earn money.”

BRANGELINA BUILD A SKATEPARK

hile most kids would be happy with a skateboard, if Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt are your parents they can do one better and build you your own

The couple have just finished work on their LA Mansion and have included a professional skatepark with a full sized bowl and ramps, which runs parallel to the entire length of their house. There is also a specially designed area with soft padding so their children can land safely while attempting jumps. The couple’s six children Maddox, 12, Pax, 10, Zahara, 9, Shiloh, 8 and twins Vivienne and Knox, 5 don’t know how lucky they are!

S

inger and newly reinstated X Factor presenter Cheryl Cole has admitted her rose tattoo cost thousands of pounds “probably the price of a small car” and took over 72 hours to complete. The artwork covering her back and perfectly toned behind, was done by US celeb tattooist Nikko Hurtado. She had the tat done after contracting the life threatening disease Malaria in 2010, “I created a f*** it list because life’s too short and the tattoo was on there!” The Geordie lass has also revealed more than her derriere, admitting she has just shacked up with French restaurant owner boyfriend Jean-Bernard Fernandes-Versini, who she has been dating for just over 2 months. The hunky Frenchman is now living with her in the palatial £4m Surrey mansion she used to share with former husband Ashley Cole.

KATE MOSS AND LILO FALL OUT

K

ate Moss has reportedly had a huge row with Lindsay Lohan at top London nightspot, the Chiltern Firehouse.

According to reports from The Sun, the stars were seen rowing in front of diners with Lindsey getting the proverbial ‘talking to’ about contacting Kate’s husband, The Kills’ singer Jamie Hince. Troubled star Lohan, is supposedly planning a permanent move to the Capital. Let’s hope this fallout with the Queen of the Primrose Hill sect doesn’t cost her any new found friends.

BENTLEY RETIRES TO GROW LA SALA

F

ormer Tottenham Hotspur midfielder David Bentley has announced his retirement from professional football, revealing plans to focus on the growth of the La Sala restaurant chain, which recently announced its expansion into the UK. Bentley, 29, is co-owner of La Sala, famed for its flagship restaurant in Puerto Banus, Marbella, which is a regular haunt of celebrities such as the TOWIE crew and Jamie Oliver. La Sala is opening its first UK restaurant in Chigwell, Essex later this year.

L

ess than three months after announcing their split, Hollywood royalty Gwyneth Paltrow and singer Chris Martin have put their divorce plans on hold in a last-ditch attempt to save their 10-year marriage. According to The Mirror the couple are attempting to give things another go and are regularly seen out together laughing and joking. Last week a picture of them emerged looking very cosy while enjoying a meal at a Californian farm. Plus Gwyneth is still wearing her wedding ring and the couple still live together. A close friend of the couple said, “It’s true they had problems but in the weirdest way this conscious uncoupling’ situation has relieved the pressure on them.” Gwyneth originally announced the news of their split in a statement on her website in March calling the separation ‘Consciously Uncoupling’ which many joked sounded like a Coldplay song. The couple have two children together, Apple 10 and Moses 8.

Mick Jagger slammed by L’Wren’s sister

M

ick Jagger is in the proverbial dog house. Reports have indicated that he may have been seeing his new lover, 27-year old ballerina Melanie Hamrick, while his former partner L’Wren Scott was still alive. The new couple allegedly met backstage at a Rolling Stones gig in Tokyo earlier this year. Fashion designer and former model L’Wren tragically took her own life in March this year, leaving her $9m fortune to Jagger, her partner for over a decade. L’Wren’s sister Jan Shane has since hit out at Jagger in an interview with The Mirror after seeing pictures of him embracing his new lover on a hotel balcony in Zurich. She called him “grotesquely disrespectful.”

CELEBRITIES IN MARBELLA

Former Coronation Street Star Michelle Keegan and her fiancé TV Presenter Mark Wright were spotted partying in the VIP area of Pangea.

Jessica Wright joining La Sala singer and new resident Marbella Rocks columnist Peet Rothwell on the mic at La Sala.

Former Blue singer and CBB housemate Lee Ryan at Villa Padierna Palace celebrating the launch of Heritage Media.

TOWIE’s Tom Pearce, Lewis Bloor and Dan Osbourne and professional padel player Frankie Langan having a quiet dinner.

Bobby Norris and Harry Derbridge sport one-sided G-Strings at Plaza Beach. A menswear trend we’re really hoping doesn’t take off.

“The more I think about it, the angrier it makes me. My sister deserves more respect,” she said. “I now believe that he was a bigger part of her troubles than we knew about.”

Best Waterproof Gadgets for Summer

S

ummer’s well and truly upon us. The one thing with the Mediterranean climate we’re all enjoying is we’re constantly in need of cooling off in the sea or a dip in the pool. If you’re thinking of upgrading your technology this summer it may well be worth knowing what ones you can take the plunge with.

The Samsung Galaxy S5 We all know there’s nothing worse than accidently diving in the pool with your phone (apart from being pushed in by some clever bugger!) but that’s not a problem if you’re the owner of the latest Samsung Galaxy S5, which is completely waterproof. As well as being a good overall phone, it surpasses Apple’s iPhone on the water stakes. Get yourself a Samsung and you can keep your silly mates?!!

Xperia Tablet Z2 Sony’s latest tablet is completely waterproof. It’s quadcore processors means it also has one of the best highdefinition video players on the market. So if watching Netflix in the bath or swimming pool’s your thing, go ahead, you can!

Lavod LFV-297P MP-3 Player Just because you’re in the water (or underwater claims its manufacturers – but only ‘up to three hours’!) doesn’t mean you have to miss out on your favourite songs. This nifty little MP3 device also counts the laps, time and distance you swim.

Seashell SS-1 Blue Universal Underwater This brightly-coloured clamshell case has a springloaded clasp and a sliding lock which fits most digital compact cameras making them waterproof for up to 40 meters.

MENSWEAR

BRANDS TO WATCH F or the dedicated follower of fashion Marbella is hardly short of shopping options. From Puerto Banus’ many shops to the cavernous La Canada you can find all the major brands you’d expect to find in any global city. But remaining bang on trend is a fickle and often arduous task. Yes Milan, Paris and New York’s

finest wares do reach the southern part of the Iberian Peninsula, but in case you fancy trying out something a bit different that’s not from ‘The Port’ or ‘Zara’ (probably the only decent menswear high street brand) Marbella Rocks style team has trawled the web AND handpicked a selection of top fashion labels that’ll keep you looking on trend and ahead of the competition.

Bolongaro Trevor - You will probably have heard of or shopped in All Saints,

which has enjoyed a stratospheric rise over the last few years. Well its founders have not stood still and have launched another cult brand boasting original and quirky clothing, inspired largely by rock and roll mod culture. Collaborations with the cutting-edge fashion label have included legendary rock bands such as The Who, Kasabian and Kings of Leon alongside being a hit with celebrities including the likes of Agyness Deyne and Liam Gallagher. Dig deep and there’s even some togs worth wearing in a more formal situation. bolongarotrevor.com

Super Superficial - Popular but not particularly cheap, and bound to end up with a boutique

in Puerto Banus at some point soon, Super Superficial is an independent clothing label based in London that collaborates with the world’s best graphic artists and illustrators to create exclusive, original, high-quality garments. With a focus on top-half, uni-sex apparel they also offer exclusively designed accessories. All clothes are made from heavyweight, pre-shrunk cotton and they are all silk-screen printed in the capital. If you’re looking for a quality t-shirt and dare to be different, this is the place to begin. supersuperficial.com

FARAH - Farah was born in 1920 in the US, but it was not until the 1970’s that it reached the cult status it holds today. The original Farah slacks were made from hopsack canvas and became an immediate hit: slim cut, sharply tailored and featuring, then awe-inspiring, stain-resistant technology, the trouser was unlike anything available at the time and by the 1980’s had become a must have label amongst fashion savvy hipsters. And the label is enjoying a resurgence, so you’ll look cutting edge in your ‘70s-look garments. farah.co.uk GIBSON - London is known for its tailoring, hell it has a whole street dedicated to the art. And

it’s an art that has undergone something of a renaissance in recent years, with the like of Paul Smith getting a leg-up thanks to the Mod-ish sensibilities of Tour de France and Olympic champion Bradley Wiggins and his like. But not all fine tailoring has to be bespoke, believe it or not you can secure some fine garments online as well. Take Gibson, for example, a quintessential menswear brand that was born out of the city and ‘bred to make individuals stand out’. Their style and clothing is centred around classic city elegance and fine tailoring with a contemporary edge. gibsonlondon.com

PETER WERTH - Peter Werth was very much thought of as ‘of its era’ but is staging

something of a comeback according to top fashion critics. About to celebrate its 40th year – the brand was founded in London in 1975 – it has become known for more than just the knitwear of its early days and the brand has now evolved through shirting, blazers, outwear, fine jersey wear into shoes and men’s accessories. And it’s still very, very stylish. The free shipping is a bonus, too. peterwerth.co.uk

SUPERGA - Incredibly, Superga is well over 100 years old. Born in Turin in 1911 the Superga factory, under the stewardship of Walter Martiny, started to produce shoes with vulcanized rubber soles giving birth to the Classic Superga 2750. After the war, Superga reopened with a mission to bring high quality footwear to the people of Italy. Having established the 2750 as the People’s Shoe of Italy Superga increased its product line and added technical sport shoes the City collection. Superga’s diverse range of easy to wear, stylish footwear includes collections of leather shoes. superga.co.uk ISSUE 02 | MARBELLAROCKS

NEWS If you’re anything like the Marbella Rocks team to really appreciate your nights out there’s nothing quite like a relaxing night in. Cue DVD, dinner and a good bottle of wine. Here’s a rundown and recipe for a quality night in.

RECIPE

GRILLED STEAK SALAD WITH PESTO & CROSTINI

This classic Italian recipe by Jamie Oliver is bursting with fresh herb flavour. Below is the standard way to make it but you can also add pine nuts and parmesan cheese shavings if desired. Enjoy! Cooking time: 20 minutes Ingredients: (makes 2 portions) 2 x 200 g matured rib-eye steaks Olive oil, sea salt, freshly ground black pepper 1 sprig fresh rosemary, leaves picked and chopped ½ tablespoon dried oregano 2 slices ciabatta bread 2 tablespoons green pesto 1 clove garlic, cut in half 100 g mixed salad leaves Juice of 1 lemon 1. Lay the steaks on a chopping board and rub with olive oil. Season and sprinkle with the rosemary and oregano. Cover with greaseproof paper and bash lightly with a rolling pin until the steaks are slightly flattened out and the herbs and seasoning are pressed into the meat. 2. Put a large griddle pan on a high heat and, as it’s heating up, toast the ciabatta on both sides. Keep the toast warm. Shake any crumbs out of the griddle pan, then return to the heat and lay the steaks in it, side by side. Cook for

18 MARBELLAROCKS | ISSUE 02

about 8 minutes, turning every minute, for a medium steak, or a little longer if you like your meat more cooked. Lift the steaks out of the pan and leave to rest somewhere warm. 3. Spoon a tablespoon of pesto onto each plate and smear out across the plate with the back of a spoon. 4. Place a steak on each plate and rub the toasted ciabatta with the garlic, drizzle with a little olive oil and put a piece on top of each steak. 5. In a mixing bowl, toss the salad leaves with the lemon juice, a lug of olive oil and a pinch of salt and pepper. Divide the salad between the plates and serve.

FOOD & WINE MATCH

PESTO BRINGS VIBRANCY, ACIDITY AND POWER TO THIS DISH. Pesto originated in Genoa, Italy. So crisp, bright, citrus fruit wines of this region are perfectly

matched, cutting right through the olive oil, garlic and Parmigiano cheese. Try a bottle from the Piedmont region. Select a wine which is not too ripe, so the natural herbaceous notes will match the fresh, green character of the pesto. A French or New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc, or an Albarino from Galicia, Spain are both delicious alternatives. And if the steak lovers want a red wine, then I would definitely choose an older red. A Cabernet Franc - based blend from a chateau in the St.Emilion region of Bordeaux. As Cabernet Franc ages, it has a slight green, vegetable characteristic in maturation. This would bring an added depth to the entire dish. For the bolder ones amongst you, the final match would be a Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon. A unique and magical combination. A perfect balance between the acidity and the tannins, bringing an added pizzaz to an already wow factor recipe! Time to try something new- Salut!

NEWS DVD RELEASES OF THE MONTH

NOAH

The biblical tale of Noah’s Ark has been given the Hollywood treatment with Russell Crowe taking the lead as Noah in an all-star cast that includes Anthony Hopkins, Ray Winstone, Jennifer Connelly and Emma Watson. The story begins with Noah getting a vision from God that a flood is going to wipe out everything in the world. Much to his family’s disbelief Noah convinces himself he must build an ark big enough to transport his family and every species of animal to safety. The more difficult task it seems is convincing everyone he is not losing his mind and get them to board the ark before the floods begin.

UNDER THE SKIN

Scarlett Johannson plays the lead femme fatale beautifully in this exquisite film from ‘Sexy Beast’ director Jonathan Glazer. While some of this year’s big blockbuster’s like Transformers and Robocop have been making headlines, Glazer’s portrayal of alien Johannson is far from big budget but still makes as powerful impact.

The story begins with supernatural Johannson arriving on earth and turning into human form. As she drives through Scotland she is making sense of her new world and is seen coming into contact with various men and stripping them of their humanity. BOOK REVIEW

THE RISE AND FALL OF GREAT POWERS

Author Tom Rachman is celebrated for his humour and characterisation. His latest novel confirms his reputation as one of our most exciting modern writers. Tom Rachman was born in 1974 in London, but grew up in Vancouver. He worked as a reporter in India and Sri Lanka before returning to New York where he is critically acclaimed as New York Times’ best selling author. The Rise and Fall of Great Powers (only his second novel) is a brilliant, clever story about a young woman who travels the world trying to make sense of her puzzling past. Tooly Zylberberg, is an American owner of an isolated Welsh bookshop, who lives her life through reading, without much human contact. She is worried about the things she remembers from her past when she was abducted as a child and taken on trips to Asia, Europe and America. Tooley knows her abductors names. Humphrey is a Russian reading addict. Sarah is fun loving but tempestuous. Venn is a charismatic leader who transformed Tooly forever - until he suddenly disappeared. Years later, Tooly receives a letter from an old boyfriend in New York, which reopens all her anxieties. Without giving too much away this fast paced novel has gathered critical acclaim and is tipped to be one of the top reads this summer. Rocks rating:

NIKKI BEACH E

stablished in 1998 by Jack Penrod, the Nikki Beach brand seamlessly combines entertainment, dining, music, fashion and art into one. Truly A-List, Nikki Beach worldwide has attracted the likes of The Kardashians, Ben Stiller and Halle Berry and the Marbella branch is no different, with Eva Longoria, Sophie Ellis-Bextor and Prince Albert of Monaco all selecting the luxury beach club to spend their summer days. Oozing sex appeal and glamour, Nikki Beach is a ‘must’, although it is on the higher end of the budget spectrum. If you are looking to devour cocktails (another must!) and dance in the sunshine; reserve one of the plush white sun loungers,

allowing you to maximize your tanning time and immerse yourself in the celebration. Alternatively, if you’re more of an epicurean and making the trip along the coast to sample some of their signature dishes, give the bed a miss and book a table in the restaurant, this way you can still join in the party without doubling your budget for the day. The menu boasts European, Asian and American influences with items such as Nikki Beach Wagyu Beef Sliders, Black Truffle Roasted Chicken and Marrakech Spiced Rack of Lamb. The Jeroboam’s of Nikki’s House Rose are definitely the ‘in’ choice and the ideal accompaniment to lunch in the sunshine.

This year Nikki added the one element they were missing… a swimming pool, a final touch that alongside the stunning new décor has truly cemented Nikki Beach’s status as one of the finest beach retreats. As well as their daytime parties, Nikki Beach also offers a stunning evening restaurant and a nightclub. If you can only attend one event this year the Red Season Closing Party is the one on everyone’s lips… that is until the White Party returns at the start of the season next year.

Best for:

Entertainment… Nikki Beach triumphs in many ways but there creative entertainment always exceeds beyond your wildest imagination. Think dynamic fire shows, electric violinists and world-class dancers and you’re probably halfway there!

don’t leave without trying:

The Sushi Dragon … yes it is for two, but if you’re a sushi mega fan you might regret sharing! Dining in a large group? The Sushi Boat for six takes sushi to another level!

THE BAD NEWS:

Nikki Beach is a 20-minute taxi along the coast from Puerto Banus. If you’re attending one of their evening parties be sure to ask about the chauffeur service, as if there is a few of you, it’s worth avoiding the taxi queue home and often not a great deal more expensive than the traditional route.

PLAZA BEACH W

hilst Plaza Beach always had the finest position in the port, it was often overshadowed by the impressive décor and furnishings of its surrounding competitors. However, all that changed when they opened the doors this summer.

If that’s not enough, on their latest trip to Marbella, The Only Way is Essex chose to film the opening episode of Season 12 at Plaza Beach. It seems this summer… the only place is Plaza!

Boasting a stunning new refurbishment including swanky cabana beds complete with their own personal Jacuzzis, Plaza has truly made its mark on Puerto Banus and no doubt had the other beach clubs quivering in their boots. With the same PR Team behind the legendary News Café and Aqwa Mist, Plaza Beach boasts Hed Kandi parties every Saturday, and Kinky Malinki on Sundays.

Best for:

Position, position, position! If you are staying in Puerto Banus, you couldn’t ask for a closer beach club and when you are travelling with a group greater than four, and have to opt for two taxis, you will be very thankful you can just walk down the road. Also anywhere within the Nueva Andalucía area will only be minutes in a cab. Simply ask for the entrance of Puerto Banus and you can’t miss it!

don’t leave without trying:

Cocktails! Whether you fancy mojitos, caipirinhas or cosmopolitans, you will definitely leave with a smile on your face.

THE BAD NEWS:

Whilst the personal Jacuzzi’s are impressive if you haven’t booked a cabana bed you will still need to head to the sea for a dip as there is no main swimming pool. However rumour has it, one is arriving next year!

OCEAN CLUB N

estled just moments from Puerto Banus you will find the world renowned, Ocean Club, famed for its crystal clear infinity pool, oversized circular white sunbeds, attractive (and attentive) waiting staff and most importantly… its parties! The club occupies a total of 9000m2, making it one of the largest beach clubs in Europe. If you get the choice, opt for a beachside sunbed allowing you to gaze out over the Mediterranean whilst you sip your cocktail in the sunshine. As well as the beach club, the restaurant is another of Ocean Club’s shining stars. Belgian Chef, Stephane Brulyant fuses French,

Asian and Mediterranean cuisine with delights including Seared Sesame Crusted Tuna, Lemongrass flavoured Alaskian King Crab and Rendang Indonesian Beef Curry. An extensive sushi menu and delightful sharing platters such as Chateaubriand ‘Gros Sel’ and the Pata Negra Platter also make an appearance. If you’re a wine connoisseur, prepare to be impressed, as their in-house sommelier is on hand to offer the finest recommendations to complement each dish. A massage zone, beauty salon and boutique completes Ocean Club’s luxury offering… what more could you ask for?

Best for:

Celebrity spotting… so far this summer Ricky Hatton, Jermaine Jenas, Stephanie Waring, Jennifer Metcalfe and Max George have all partied at the legendary beach club, and that is just this year alone. One Direction, Little Mix, Ashley Cole, Kym Marsh, Tulisa, Victoria Silvstedt, Callum Best and David Silva are just a few other Ocean Club famous faces.

don’t leave without trying:

The one and only Champagne Spray Parties. If you haven’t heard of Sintillate’s Champagne Spray Parties at Ocean Club, where have you been? Each month over 3000 party-goers spray 6000 bottles of Veuve Cliquot, just for the fun of it! Why?... Why not? This is truly something you need to see to believe!

THE BAD NEWS:

Whilst general entry is free, (except Champagne Spray Parties), the beds are expensive so if you are looking to bask in the sunshine and top up your tan, there are definitely cheaper sunbathing options. Save Ocean Club for a party day, that way all you have to worry about is topping up your champagne!

Furthermore, for the first time in Marbella, Purobeach recently introduced private Nomad tents. Each tent covers half of a double sunbed for protection and privacy and inside a vibrant carpet, floor mirror and bench intensifies this new level of superiority.

Best for:

The little touches! When you reserve a pool bed, not only do you receive the classics – (towel, water, fresh fruit) but you are also gifted with cold towels to refresh your face, after sun lotion (just in case!) and a smoothie.

Just what you need after a heavy week in Marbella.

THE BAD NEWS:

If you are planning on spending a day at Purobeach with your children, think again! It’s a high adrenaline race for the rich and famous featuring fast and sometimes never been seen before cars. A spectacle to watch if you can or an even greater experience to participate if you can stump up the €50,000 entry fee! The Rally was started by former skater Maximillion Cooper in 1999. each leg of the race, and not surprisingly, within a few years, word of the rally began to spread. Today, the Gumball is not only one of the world’s largest motor rallies, it’s also considered the ultimate road trip for car aficionados worldwide or a rite of passage for ‘big kids’ who enjoy the speed and tenacity of a race with some partying thrown in for good measure. It’s also gained a cult celebrity following with its now legendary parties attended by the likes of Kate Moss, Kylie Minogue and Johnny Knoxville. Only this year Tony Hawk, Tinnie Tempah, David Hasselhoff and former Ruff Ryders rapper Eve went along for the ride.

FEATURES

This year the race started in South Beach, Miami, where the 120 strong racing drivers cruised through the state of Florida towards Georgia and Atlanta. New York provided the next stopover, where the drivers enjoyed a day of money-can’t-buy VIP hospitality. Then all the 120 supercars were loaded onto cargo planes and flown over the Atlantic to Scotland – with the Gumballers on private jets not far behind. Leaving skyscrapers for lochs and highlands, drivers roared through Scotland before heading south to the home of the Gumball London. From there it was across the channel to Paris, then through France and Spain to the beautiful city of Barcelona. The home stretch was just a short drive and ferry ride to the finish line in Ibiza, where the Gumballers enjoyed an explosive finale celebration weekend.

he forties are all about maximising your assets and subtly covering your less favourite parts. Some striking pieces, a new haircut, or even a piece of jewellery does the trick by drawing the eye where you want it.

You should not have to worry when choosing an outfit whether it suits you as everything in your wardrobe will have been carefully selected according to your own style. So what you wear will just depend on what would be appropriate for the occasion.

It is good to have wardrobe staples so you don’t have any “what shall I wear” moments when you should be dashing out of the door.

Of course, half the battle of looking good is confidence that you do look good and blend in with all the other fashionable women in their forties on the high street!

ur cover star, the multi award-winning singer and songwriter Ellie Goulding has come a long way since bursting on the music scene with debut album Lights in 2010.

That album went straight to number 1 in the UK Album Charts and to date she has sold over five million albums worldwide with electro pop track ‘Burn’ residing at number 1 for 3 weeks in the singles chart. She is currently working on a new album and planning a world tour for 2015.

Rags to Riches

W

hat many people don’t know about Ellie’s rise to the top is her tough upbringing. ‘Elena Jane Goulding’ was born on a council estate in Herefordshire and admits she didn’t have the best childhood. “We grew up in the smallest house with motheaten, flea-ridden furniture with holes in it handed down from my nana. But my mum had pride and we were always dressed nicely,” she says candidly and without self-pity. Her father walked out on her mum and three siblings when she was just five years old. Ellie has often spoken about her “horrible” stepdad - a tattooed lorry driver who her mother remarried. “He wasn’t intelligent, he’d never suggest a book to read or a film to watch. There was nothing there,” she recalls. However it was this upbringing that spurned a young Ellie to do so well. She started writing a diary at eight - which she attributes to being the skill that allowed her to grow into a successful songwriter. Plus she went to Kent University to study drama, allowing her to perfect her performing abilities. While Goulding’s voice has been likened to Bjork and Cerys Matthews, she painstakingly admits that she never thought she had a career in music. “I was never chosen in school plays as the lead singer and my mum used to tell me to be quiet when I sung!” Despite this her passion for music came from her mother who introduced her to bands including Bob Dylan and The Beatles when she was very young. She also took up playing the guitar because of this. Ellie’s lucky break came at the age of 18, when she performed at an open-mic talent show where she met her first manager, Jamie Lillywhite. After a

tough few years playing the London gig circuit and setting up her own MySpace page, she contacted electro pop musician Frankmusik asking for help on an acoustic track she was penning. With his guidance, ‘Wish I Stayed’ racked up 100,000 plays in three months and put the then 21-year-old Ellie on the map. As a result, she got a deal with Universal Music’s established Polydor label and quit college to concentrate on her singing career.

Overcoming her demons While it seems that Ellie, now 27 years old, has the world at her feet, her success has not come easily. She used to regularly suffer from bad panic attacks. “Some days I felt like I was having a heart attack and dying. I ended up in A&E a couple of times.” Nowadays she wears a heart monitor to make sure her heart rate doesn’t run too high and has cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) to keep her calm. She also regularly runs 5km a day to keep her both fit and sane. “Sometimes I’m emotionally all over the place,” Ellie admits, “but when I’m running I keep totally focused, its what our bodies are meant to do.” Ellie Goulding has also recently told ES Magazine that she used to hide parts of her face from the camera in her early career as she thought she was not pretty enough. “At one time I was getting all this musical success but I wasn’t getting all the things that went with it, like magazine covers,” she said. “I was convinced for a long time I wasn’t aesthetically pleasing enough. I would have to angle my face to hide the side of my nose, or my chin,” she recalls. Ellie admits that she had to force herself to let go and stop caring about what other people thought. “I put a different energy out there, then all the covers started to happen.”

While Ellie is certainly not the first to suffer from the pressure of the media to look a certain way, she has been a great role model to other young women. Notably after appearing on X Factor last year in a sheer Julien Macdonald dress, Ellie was slammed on social media sites for her fuller body shape. She took to Twitter to share her views on the matter: “They said my body was ‘too athletic’ Too athletic?! Isn’t it admirable that someone has worked so hard to look good and healthy.” Good on you girl!

Ellie’s love life Unlike many other young pop singers, Ellie has been fairly good at keeping her romantic life out of the media. She has been linked to many pop stars including Ed Sheeran, Skillrex and Niall from One Direction as well as having a long-term relationship with US actor Jeremy Irvine. She is now in a happy relationship with McBusted’s Dougie Poynter and has been since May of this year after getting friendly at Chiltern Firehouse. The duo are regularly papped out and about together holding hands and looking very much in love. But this is the only detail we are getting. Ellie has sworn off talking about her love life. “I never talk about my love life anymore because it’s always gone wrong when I talk about it in the past.” Ellie is performing at the FIB Benicassim Festival this month (July 17th – 20th) Visit www.fiberfib.com for more details.

V U E LT A E S P A N A CYCLE RACE

52 MARBELLAROCKS | ISSUE 02

VIVA LA VUELTA! The Vuelta Espana is an epic three-week race over the most physically and mentally challenging terrain in Europe, Spain’s own cycling Grand Tour is just a stone’s throw from Marbella this summer. Hold onto your handlebars – here’s our guide to the Vuelta Espana You might have noticed Tour fever hit Britain this summer, as the most gruelling and prestigious of cycle races – the Tour de France – staged its Grand Depart in Harrogate, Yorkshire. But wait short a while, Marbella, and Spain’s own annual velo-fest will turn up not far from your doorstep. The Vuelta Espana is the third

of cycling’s three-week-long Grand Tours. And, as sporting events go, it’s epic: beginning in Jerez de la Frontera, Cadiz, on August 23, it will feature 21 stages with a total distance of about 3,181km. That will take it the length and breadth of Spain to the finish in Santiago de Compostela, Galicia, on Sunday September 14. This year’s route – yes, it changes every time – will take in eight summit finishes and 44.5km of individual time-trialling (in which each cyclist races a shorter stage alone, without the support of teammates or the peloton). Those summit finishes, on top of the other mountain stage climbs, are arguably the most physically and mentally challenging sporting endeavours in the world over some of Europe’s most challenging terrain. And this is where the Tour will be won and lost.

RIPPING THEIR LEGS OFF Take Stage 6, for example, which begins in Benalmádena – a short 43km, halfhour drive up the coast from Marbella on August 28. It’s the first stage with categorised climbs (ascents in road cycling are categorised from 1, for most difficult, to 4, for least difficult, based on their steepness and length), including a climb to the finish that has an average gradient of 8.9% in the closing kilometre on the Cumbres Verdes (the Green Peaks) in La Zubia. Suffice to say – without revisiting diagrams last seen on our GCSE maths paper explaining distance travelled vertically divided by distance travelled horizontally – that’s ruddy steep. Especially at the end of the 157.7km in the saddle.

YOU ARE WITHIN TOUCHING DISTANCE – AND YOU DON’T EVEN NEED A TICKET. Unlike the finish, the starting 50km of Stage 6 will not rip the riders’ legs off – it’s comparatively flat. The joy of watching the start of a stage, however, is in immersing yourself in the vibrant pop-up village of activity that follows the Tour. A convey of team cars – each one stacked with thousands of Euros worth of top-end cycling machinery – and battle busses descends upon previously quiet corners of host towns. Watch as each one of cycling’s top World Tour teams unpacks every conceivable bit of cycling kit imaginable – and all with each team’s unique branding: Team Sky’s black and blue Death Star.

Garmin-Sharp’s baby-blue and red reflecting its American heritage. Tinkoff-Saxo’s unmistakable yellow and blue contrast. It’s a multi-coloured cycling circus humming with energy. And your access to the protagonists in cycling is unlike any other sport. Want to watch the riders warm up on turbo-trainers from a couple of yards away? Done. Share a couple of words as they leave to sign-on for the race? Go for it. A quick selfie as they make last-minute adjustments to their bikes? Snap away. You are within touching distance – and you don’t even need a ticket.

LOOKING OUT FOR A MATÉ The Vuelta last visited Marbella in 2010, when Britain’s Mark Cavendish was beaten in a sprint finish after a 173.7km ride from Alcalá de Guadaíra. The Manx Missile still won the points classification that year (the Green Jersey awarded to the rider with the most points according to the position in which they finished each stage; in effect, Cavendish crossed the line first (or as near to first) more than anyone else) and began Stage 3, also in Marbella, still wearing the red leader’s jersey that he would go on to concede to eventual winner Vincenzo Nibali. So, who can you expect to see on the road to Santiago de Compostela? Squads are not confirmed until as little as a week before the race begins, but it should include local representation in the form of Cofidis rider and Marbella resident Luis Ángel Maté (you can follow him on Twitter at @luisangelmate). Recognise him? Of course you do: he was the lad on his bike in the #MarbellaIsHappy video – a lip-synched tribute to Pharrell Williams’ monster earworm – at the end of March this year. First, Maté will ride the Tour de France for the third time this summer. How he holds up after that in terms of his form and fitness will dictate whether or not he is included in Cofidis’ squad for the Vuelta.

VYING FOR THE VUELTA Predicting the field in Spain before the Tour de France is difficult. So we spoke to Irish Tinkoff-Saxo rider Nicolas Roche, son of former cycling Triple Crown champion Stephen and winner of Stage 2 in last year’s race, and asked him to explain the make-up of the field of riders competing for cycling’s final Grand Tour of the year. “You have the guy who’s just signed his contract for the following season, and so has a certain amount of pressure taken off of him because he’s not looking for a team for the following year,” Roche explains. “Or there’s the guy who hasn’t signed his contract and he knows it’s his last chance. “You also have the rider who is getting his first chance at a Grand Tour. And the rider who has had a really long season and he’s giving everything he’s got but there’s not much left. In that respect, the overall level of the Tour de France is still harder. But when you’re riding GC [General Classification – the overall ranking of riders by the time each one has taken to complete every stage combined], they’re just as hard. The list of team leaders capable of winning a Grand Tour, or who have already finished in the top five or the top 10 of a Grand Tour is numerous.” All of which means anything can happen – as evidenced by last year’s winner: the then 41-year-old Chris Horner. Horner (the American Lampre-Merida rider, not the Red Bull F1 team principle) will likely return to defend his title, although that will depend on his successfully negotiating the Tour de France first. There will be British interest with Team Sky’s presence. They are unlikely to send Chris Froome (second in 2011) after his Tour de France defence. But they might just send Sir Bradley Wiggins (third in 2011) for one last crack at a Grand Tour in black and blue – especially if, as expected, he is again absent in France in July. It will also be a good testing ground for his form ahead of the World Championship time trial. If you want to catch a glimpse of Wiggo – assuming he is involved – and want to adventure beyond Benalmádena, we recommend seeing the riders begin Stage 2 in Algeciras or the start of Stage 3 in the port of Cadiz. The latter will see the riders line up for the 188km stage to Arcos de la Frontera on board the Juan Carlos I Spanish Navy aircraft carrier – only the second time a Grand Tour stage will have started at sea.

Virgins hold a highly esteemed place in Spanish culture. These Virgins can be found in their wooden and porcelain forms, resting in the alcoves of all local churches.

THE ‘VIRGEN DEL CARMEN’ FESTIVAL

T

hese revered figurines are devotedly polished and dotingly prepared at different times of the year for participation in their own personal festivals. Adorned Virgin Mary statues can be found atop of Easter floats, which are solemnly paraded through the streets at Easter time. The Virgin of Carmen, or the ‘Virgen del Carmen’, as she is known in Spanish has her own special day in July.

Each 16th of July, in Spanish seaside towns and villages, the ‘Virgen del Carmen’ is paraded upon a flower-adorned throne, through jam-packed streets filled with excited spectators, down to the local harbour. ‘La Reina de los Mares’ as she is also known,

is the patron saint of the seas and protector of fishermen, seamen, swimmers and even scuba divers. This Virgin holds her esteemed place in Spanish religion and culture thanks to a respected prophet of the Old Testament, who apparently took refuge in a cave in a Mount Carmelo. When devotees of the prophet began to retrace his footsteps centuries later, the legend of the ‘Virgen del Carmen’ was born. Because she is the patroness and the protector of the seas, it is fitting that the ‘Virgen del Carmen’ be honoured in style at the beginning of each summer, so that the fishing may be bountiful and the sea clean and safe. The legend of the ‘Virgen del Carmen’ has been tailored to the times, as she is now seen in many places as the protector of scuba divers too.

The festival of the ‘Virgen del Carmen’ is bright, noisy and joyful, as you would imagine a typical Spanish fiesta of the summer to be. This celebration is an enchanting example of how Spanish religion and the culture of fiesta exist happily side-byside. The proceedings begin with the ‘Virgen del Carmen’ being taken from the local church and placed in her position of honour on top of a flower-decorated throne. This is carried reverently and festively through the streets to the tune of a brass band and the cheering of crowds. And here one can experience the all-inclusive nature of Spanish hospitality, as anyone is welcome to join the crowd. The effigy is then taken to the local harbour, where the Virgin is reverently lowered onto a similarly flower-decked ‘jabega’, or fishing boat, so she can be taken out to bless the sea. Here throngs

Where to go: MARBELLA:

The effigy of the ‘Virgen del Carmen’ is paraded through the streets from 8pm. Interestingly, this statue is kept absolutely safe and sound in a secure vault, 12 metres underground and only sees the light of day every 16th of July. The effigy is placed on a boat at the Puerto Deportivo de Marbella and taken out to Puerto Banus. Thereafter she is returned to the Church of Nuestra Señora de la Encarnacion. One week before the procession there is a mass held in honour of the Virgin, which includes a choir and a prize for the oldest retired fisherman in town. Celebrations are generally held over a seven-day period and include flamenco dancing, religious services and other special events.

of fishermen and general party-goers join in with gusto. Throngs of boats follow the Virgin in her journey around the harbour. Prayers are said, horns are honked, thunderous crackers are let off, and music is played. There is an incredible mix of religious devotion blended with the never-ending partying associated with a Spanish summer. Many people jump in the sea and the revelry continues well into the night with fireworks, music, dancing and beach barbecues. Often, Spanish flags accompany the colourful flowers and the Spanish National Anthem will be proudly played as the ‘Virgen del Carmen’ is also honoured as the patroness of the Spanish Naval Forces. In Malaga, scores of scuba divers visit the seabed to honour

The procession leaves from Church Square, Avenida Bonanza after a mass at 7.30pm and parades down to Benalmadena Port, where it is placed on a boat. A big fireworks display takes place on the Malapesquera Beach.

The procession starts at 8pm in the Parish of Our Lady of Carmen and follows the main road to Playa La Rada beach.

the statue of the ‘Virgen del Carmen’ that was placed underwater in 1981, when it was acknowledged by the Malagueños that the Virgin did indeed protect scuba divers too. In Puerto de la Cruz in Tenerife, white doves are released into the sky as the Virgin floats out to sea. In some places, celebrations are held before and even after this day. In Malaga, for example, the procession is repeated the Sunday after the 16 of July. With the ‘Virgen del Carmen’ so suitably respected and honoured, the sea is ready to welcome the swimmers, the fishermen, the divers and the paddlers. Let the summer begin!

HAIR TRENDS

WHAT’S IN AND OUT THIS SUMMER

T

here are so many different highlighting and lowlighting techniques out there at the moment (Ombre, Balyage, Dip dye to name but a few) it’s no wonder anyone in their right mind would be confused about how to experiment with colour when new trends are being introduced so regularly. To help you decide whether any of these looks are right for you and on trend for long enough to warrant the change (!) Marbella Rocks has teamed up with top Marbella hair & beauty salon Reflections to give you the lowdown on whether you should experiment with these hair trends this summer.

OMBRE HAIR

I

n 2010 the Ombre made its debut and spurned the likes of celebrities including Jessica Alba, Ashlee Simpson and Drew Barrymore to sport the dark-to-light tresses overnight. Fast forward four years and the Ombre is still a popular choice for many. To recap, Ombre is when blonde dye (either bleach or high lift tint) is painted on the hair, usually from the ear or jawline to give you a grown out, root heavy look.

VERDICT IN BEST CELEB OMBRE: Jessica Alba ROCKS RATING:

70 MARBELLAROCKS | ISSUE 02

This used to be considered a hair faux pas a few years ago but not anymore. Nowadays Ombre is all about giving the impression that you don’t care about trips to the hairdressers every 6-8 weeks to do your roots. It’s cool, effortless and rock chick. Reflections colour director and creative stylist, Daniel Boardman, says this look is best for modern fashionable women aged 17-45. “This is a great look when done well. It’s also good look for people who want to handle their colour without losing their natural tones. Plus there’s no shelf life on this style.”

HAIR & BEAUTY

BALYAGE HAIR

P

ronounced Bal-lay-age, (meaning sweep in French) this trend involves painting (or sweeping!) select strands of hair an inch or two away from the root for a very natural sun-kissed look in the places where sun would normally lighten hair. Normally highlights are from root-to-tip in foils, whereas this process doesn’t require foils. The ends of your style are usually left blonde, although as with Ombre this can be done in various colour schemes. Brown to red and dark to light brown are popular choices.

“In my opinion this method has overtaken highlighting as it is less damaging for hair as natural heat is used to process the dye” Daniel says. “It suits everyone that wants to give tone to lighter or darker hair as it can be as bright or dark as desired.” This hair technique can suit everyone aged 1870. Celebrities that are rocking this current look of the moment are Jennifer Lopez, Alexa Chung and Jessica Biel.

VERDICT IN BEST CELEB OMBRE: Jennifer Lopez ROCKS RATING:

THE BOMBRE

N

ew hair trend alert for Summer 2014. A mix between Ombre and Balyage by putting equal parts of each trend into one blended hairstyle. The effect is a more subtle graduation of colour with streaks of highlights at the root and more of the block colour of Ombre below the jawline. You still get a great natural look with this trend. “This look is definitely in,” Dan says, “It suits women that enjoy their regular trips to the salon as you need to maintain the roots. It’s also perfect for blondes that don’t like the Ombre.

As this look involves highlights and ends everyone can have it.” The best celebrity example of the Bombre is Jennifer Aniston in summer although Sarah Jessica Parker and model Lilly Aldridge have also been rocking this look recently.

VERDICT IN BEST CELEB OMBRE: Lily Aldridge ROCKS RATING:

HAIR & BEAUTY

DIP DYE

D

ip Dye was the first of the colour hair trends to burst on the scene back in 2009 with Katy Perry, Jessie J and singer Keisha getting in on the action. Still popular for the younger set, the blonde Dip Dye has definitely seen its last days as Ombre, Balyage and the new Bombre have taken over. “This only really suits 16-21 year olds looking for a bit of fun. Sometimes popular mainly in the school holidays! It’s good because it’s on the ends and you can always cut a bit more off before school.

We keep it on the shelf unless it’s asked for.” Dan says. The only time Dip Dye could be considered fashionable is with a festival or party look. Even then we wouldn’t recommend using bleach or tints as this look can easily be achieved with the wealth of colour chalks and paint on the market that can be washed out after an event.

VERDICT OUT (EXCEPT FOR FESTIVALS) BEST CELEB OMBRE: Katy Perry ROCKS RATING:

IN SUMMARY

A

ny of the above trends are great for summer in Spain. The last thing you want to be doing in 30 degree heat is spend your time topping up your roots once a month. Balyage, Ombre and the rest require minimal upkeep that could last all summer. To determine which look is right for you, ask yourself these 3 questions: Am I okay with the “grown out roots” look? Do I want something low maintenance? Am I okay with bleach being used on my hair? If your answer is YES to all of the above, then colour experimentation could be good for you. Daniel Boardman is colour director and creative stylist at Reflections hairdressers in Marbella.

HAIR & BEAUTY Start with cleansed/moisturised skin. Always use a moisturiser and primer designed for your skin type. I recommend Crème De La Mer Regeneration Intense for after cleansing and MAC Prep and Prime-Skin Base Visage (30ml) €30. This primer is built with special effect silicones, soothes the skin, blots away excess oils and evens out skin redness.

TOP 5 ARTIST TIPS LET’S TALK ABOUT

LIGHT.

CONTOURING A TECHNIQUE TRADITIONALLY USED ON PHOTO SHOOTS AND RUNWAY MODELS IS NOW BECOMING PART OF THE EVERYDAY WOMAN’S MAKE-UP RITUAL. HERE ARE THE 5 STEPS OF CONTOURING - A SERIES OF IN DEPTH HOW-TO TIPS FOR THOSE OF US WHO WERE NOT BLESSED WITH NATURALLY CHISELED CHEEKBONES AND A STRUCTURED JAWLINE!

Secondly choose two foundations. Remember to use one that is the exact shade of your skin concentrating it in the center of where the most coverage is required, gently blend it in with a foundation brush, I recommend Chanel foundation brush 6 Pinceau Fond de Teint €45. Never rub the foundation in by hand the natural oils from our hands will contribute to ruining the desired effect.

2

After your foundation application introduce a concealer to cover blemishes and dark pigmentation around the eye area, always use a clean brush with application and remember do not apply concealer right up to your lower lashes as this will make your eyes appear smaller and the dark under eye circles even darker. I recommend using MAC Studio Finish Concealer with a SPF 35 €18.

3

Contouring and highlighting; remember there is a difference. Highlighting enhances your high points whereas contouring is to darken and create bone structure. For the best result apply highlighter on your chin, under your eyes and forehead. I recommend MAC Prep and Prime highlighter €25. Cheeks, above eyelids and jawline are to be contoured with a foundation or concealer a shade darker than your foundation base. I recommend studio fix fluid SPF 15 €27.

4

Lastly once you have mapped out where your contouring and highlighting needs to be, I would use a flat top dense brush to blend in two shades of powder and consider yourself contoured. I recommend MAC Sculpt and Shape Powders (Pro Palette).

HEALTH & FITNESS to be addictive) how the hell are we going to be able to do that? Within a day, we would be back on it, due to its addictive nature. No wonder diets are so tricky, when 80% of our supermarket food has addiction built into it.

SUGAR:

THE ADDICTIVE

COCAINE OR SUGAR? Given a choice, lab rats choose sugar. In 2007, a study of 43 cocaine addicted laboratory rats who were given a choice of sugar water or cocaine over a 15 day period....showed that 93% of them chose sugar. Sugar is addictive. Have you ever tried to ignore the bag of chocolates for the whole morning, to succumb to just one little one after lunch, then ending up eating the whole bag? You just can’t help it and by the sound of it, if they are that addictive, it’s not our fault. We know cigarettes, drugs and alcohol are addictive, but sugar?? our food? our chocolate? our crisps? (yes, there is sugar in crisps). Laurie David, the executive producer of the film ‘Fed Up’ which launched in May this year, comments that around 80% of the 600,000 items sold in the US, have added sugar. Salad dressings, pasta sauces, granola bars all have added sugar. One single can of cola contains a mighty 10 teaspoons of sugar. To put this into perspective, the World Health Organisation is considering right now to reduce the recommended limit of 10 teaspoons of sugar a day to just 5, sending out a warning that sugar intake should be halved. So whilst we mentally remind ourselves to half the sugar in our tea, or cut back on our fizzy drinks of an evening, in reality that doesn’t even scrape the surface. If the majority of what our supermarket sells contains sugar, then short of eating half the food (which happens

So the food industry has tricked us, they have sugar coated our food to make us want and buy more, just like the cigarette industry did with nicotine. How inconsiderate! Now we have to look at food like a drug from which to wean. But then again, why should we bother? So what if we eat lots of sugar? Ok it causes obesity we know that, but the odd chocolate bar or big dessert won’t hurt, will it? Apparently it does. Every time you eat sugar, your body goes into crisis mode. Why? According to Iva Keene, an accredited and internationally recognised naturopathic physician; “because it requires specific minerals to break it (the sugar) down, the same ones that are found in the whole sugarcane plant. As your body can’t get these nutrients from refined sugar, it raids your own nutrient reserves to be able to digest the sugar you just ingested. As such, sugar is rightly named an anti-nutrient, robbing you of your health.” The nutrients your body leaches to digest sugar, include calcium, chromium, magnesium and zinc. That’s where tooth decay and osteoporosis can come from; your body steals the calcium from your teeth and bones to use it to help you digest the sugar you’ve just eaten. When you lose minerals to sugar, she continues “your body can not make enough digestive enzymes to break down everything you eat. This not only leads to further complications such as poor digestion and absorption of nutrients from food, but it also increases your chances of developing allergies and food intolerances, as partly digested food particles can end up in your bloodstream.” Studies have shown that too much sugar depresses immunity, and immune system imbalances have been linked to many diseases and health problems. So if you are suffering from something that you just can’t shift, perhaps it’s the sugar. Even constant tiredness could be caused by sugar. Ingesting sugar panics the body, causing it to pump a load of insulin into your bloodstream to regulate the toxins coming in; this is the sugar high. Then once your body has recovered from the chaos, it is exhausted, we feel tired and so we reach once again for the sugar...and panic, it all happens again. If you get to a point where your cells get fed up of the sugar chaos, then they no longer bother dealing with it effectively, resulting in type 2 diabetes.

HEALTH & FITNESS ut generally, sugar causes the body to become more acidic and it is this acidity where bacteria thrive. With bacteria comes disease, so it is actually more dangerous than we think. John Yudkin’s book “Pure, White and Deadly”, published in 1972, showed even then, that consuming sugar and refined sweeteners are closely associated with long-term disease. Gillespie, a Brisbane based lawyer turned researcher was shocked to discover how many of our organs, sugar systematically destroys, without symptoms, until it is too late; first the liver, then the pancreas, then the kidneys, and ultimately the heart. As a steady diet, sugar is worse than nothing. Plain water can keep you alive for quite some time, whereas sugar and water can kill you. Watch out for the fake sugar too; sweeteners, high fructose corn syrup, aspartame, hidden under a variety of names and just as deadly. When it says ‘low in sugar’ on the packet, it is likely to mean high in fake sugar chemicals, which your body cannot digest and which cause serious damage. Aspartame, found in diet sodas, is one of the worst. According to pilots associations, pilots are not supposed to consume it, as it can cause vision problems and seizures, hence risking passenger safety. Aspartame causes formaldehyde to build up in your brain and when aspartame is combined with caffeine, like in diet cola, the

toxins created, kill off brain cells. The food industry claims that aspartame is safe, although they are the ones that have actually funded most of the studies on aspartame in the first place. Independent studies show a whole different story. Enough now, you get the picture. Sugar in whatever guise, is not only addictive, but a killer. It is time to stop. Gillespie, in his book “Sweet Poison”, charted his own decision to stop eating sugar, which resulted in him losing six stone in a year, without dieting. He explains: “You are breaking an addiction, so you need to stop consuming all sources of the addictive substance. They are all hard to give up because they are addictive – but they are all easy to give up once you understand what you are doing and why.” He adds: “Your palate adjusts significantly and quickly when you delete sugar. You can suddenly experience a whole range of flavours that either you didn’t know existed before or were muted by the presence of sugar. But how are we going to even think about what we can and can’t eat, when potentially 80% of our supermarket contains sugar? The easiest way would be to choose foods that do not have a label. If there is a label with a list of ingredients, it is likely to have been chemically manipulated and over processed. Therefore, it ends up not actually being food, more a food-like product. In hunter gatherer times, food was scarce, high in nutrition and low in calories, nowadays food is abundant, low in nutrition and high in calories. As the film ‘Hungry for Change’ states, we are overfed, but our cells, lacking in nutrients, are starving to death.

So what can we eat?

Fill your kitchen with plenty of vegetables and fruit, nuts and seeds, make your own combinations of food. Choose whole foods instead of the stripped down version. For example, white rice has had all the nutrients stripped out of it, so is of little nutritional value to your cells. Choose wild rice instead of white rice, salads rather than sandwiches, homemade sweet potato chips rather than frozen processed ones, carrots and humus rather than crisps, porridge rather than cereals, honey rather than sugar, water rather than fruit juice or squash. Don’t be fooled by ‘Low Fat’, this is likely to mean high in sugar.

It is easier to think of it as sticking to fruit and veg, meat and fish, eggs, nuts and seeds and use natural flavourings such as fresh herbs and spices, chilli, ginger, lime juice and coconut milk. The more natural, nutrient rich foods you eat, the better functioning your body will be; your heart, liver, brain, eyes, skin. Heal your body and let it take care of itself. Want a quick lunch? Pull out your fruit and veg and juice it. (Watch ‘Fat, Sick and Nearly Dead’ and ‘Superjuice Me’ for juicing inspiration.) Give your cells those nutrients they are craving, then they won’t be starving and nor will you.

HERE ARE 3 DIFFERENT METHODS TO QUIT SUGAR, WHICH IS BEST FOR YOU? 1

it out

In the film ‘Hungry for Change’, it’s all about replacement. As you add more and more good foods, rich in nutrients, the bad foods will eventually be crowded out. Make those changes over time and keep going. Pros: gently, gently, gradual change Cons: still eating addictive foods means can be tricky

IT OFF Claudia Norris, Nutritional Therapist says; “Cutting out sugar is a bit like pulling off a plaster - best done quickly. A great way to do it is to give yourself a 10 day challenge to reset your taste buds. Resetting is important because it will banish a sweet tooth. When I first became interested in nutrition I swapped sugar for honey, sweets for fruit etc but it took me a while to realise that I was still on a blood sugar rollercoaster and it’s only by resetting that you can be free of the cravings. During the 10 days you can have 2 pieces of fruit with your breakfast (eggs are ideal), and then veg for the rest of the day, along with plenty of protein (e.g. fish or chicken) and brown rice or beans and other unrefined carbs. No honey or other sweeteners are allowed. If you start to feel very tired from the sugar withdrawal, have some cooked sweet potato wedges or carrot sticks. You will be amazed on day 11 how sweet fruit tastes in the afternoon and how much energy it can give you when you are feeling tired. There will be no need to reach for sugar-laden food or drinks - it will taste too sweet!” Pros: Done in a one Cons: ignoring temptation

I personally did a 10 day detox as Claudia suggests and now I do the 80:20 rule. 80% of the time, I am sugar free and 20% of the time I allow myself some. Generally, Sunday to Friday sugar free and then Friday night and Saturday I have a little. Not too much though, just enough to join in. Pros: some enjoyment Cons: constantly switching and having to cut addiction every single week. Although saying that, once you are 80% sugar free, the 20% feels less and less like a treat. NUTRITION

BENEFITS OF GREEN TEA Green tea has been touted as the miracle drink and is seen and used by many as a fat burning essential. This month I will be highlighting just some of the benefits of this alternative to your traditional “brew”, I’m drinking my 3rd of the day as I’m writing this! Antioxidants Green Tea has a far shorter fermentation process than regular tea, leaving it rich with potent antioxidants which can help brain function, aid in fat loss and also reduce the risk of cancer. Peet’s Tip: Try to choose a higher quality option as lower quality brands will contain more fluoride. Caffeine The active ingredient in GT is Caffeine. A common stimulant that we are all familiar with. It doesn’t contain as much as coffee but enough to give us a “get up and go” boost. Caffeine also mobilizes “fatty acids” from fat tissues making them available for use as energy. Peet’s Tip: Try taking a Green Tea on an empty stomach before your early morning run for optimum fat-burning. Studies Studies show that green tea drinkers have a lower risk of Cancer and neurological disease due to the high level of antioxidants. Further studies show that “Catechins” in Green Tea can kill bacteria and inhibit viruses like Influenza and potentially lower your risk of infection. This also leads to improved dental health and fights bad breath. Peet’s tip: Don’t like the taste? Try supplementing with Green Tea extract, available in tablet form from most health shops and pharmacies.

BOTTOM LINE

Green Tea is a prominent and important addition to your daily routine. Fat fighting, improved mental health and lowered risk of chronic disease, you might want to consider making Green Tea a part of your healthy lifestyle.

Peet’s Progress

Each month Marbella Rocks will be checking in on Peet, to follow his preparation and progress on his journey to the competition. And pick up some healthy tips along the way. This week I have hit what we call my 8 week diet and training cycle. I’m looking to compete later this year in the relatively new “Men’s Physique” category of Bodybuilding. There are so many elements of diet, fat loss, water retention, carb cycling and training aswell as other details such as hair removal and tanning that I feel the need to run through and get right to know my body is ready for the real thing. So this month I will be touching on Diet. I eat 5-6 meals a day consisting of proteins, good carbs and healthy fats and track my caloric intake with these ingredients. Eating “little but often” helps to increase my metabolism and is a sure fire way to add lean muscle while keeping body fat on the downlow. This prevents my digestion system from panicking and storing excess energy as fat. A subject I will be touching on over future issues. My diet currently consists of: Chicken Turkey Smoked Salmon Avocado Spinach Broccoli Asparagus Eggs Brown rice Sweet Potato Oats Muesli And 3 Protein Shakes per day. It’s essential that I avoid all sugars in food and drink as our sugar intake (all carbohydrates are sugars) is the main cause of fat storage. This is something I will cover in depth in next month’s column. Check out my page next month for more training, nutrition and fitness tips.

PERSONAL

TRAINING.

CARDIO VERSUS RESISTANCE TRAINING FOR WEIGHT LOSS! WHICH ONE IS THE MOST EFFECTIVE?

A

question I ask all of my clients is what is most important to them - weight loss or changing the shape of their body? Being lighter doesn’t always mean looking better but being toned does! From my experience, aerobic workout can definitely help with weight loss but along the way reduces the size of the muscles within our body, which can lead to sagginess and poorly toned bodies, which most people want to avoid. There is a massive difference between a pound of fat loss and a pound of muscle loss. Therefore I would always advise to grow the muscle mass not reduce it. Science does tell us the more lean muscle we have – the higher your resting metabolic rate.

80 MARBELLAROCKS | ISSUE 02

That means even when we are not doing anything - our bodies will burn off more energy (calories) leading to more fat loss. So is the question resistance training or weight training? Which if done incorrectly can add bulk to a body and even worse show very little change for the effort we put in. Well the answer is easy- BOTH - combine aerobic activity with resistance training. I have been teaching combination workouts for many years. I feel they offer the most effective overall weight loss programme whilst increasing the lean muscle and changing the shape of the whole body. As always it is a balancing act - if your body is carrying extra fat, then watching what you eat is crucial- exercise alone is not the answer. These are my top 3 workouts for a better body shape.

HEALTH & FITNESS

Circuit Class Workouts Alternating resistance training and body weight exercises with intense aerobic activities- with minimum rest and maximum effort. Circuit training is very time efficient - helping to develop strength and stamina in a single session.

HIIT

Flexibility, balance and coordination

(OR HIGH INTENSITY INTERVAL TRAINING) A set amount of exercise to be done in a specific time, normally less than 30 minutes. By using large muscle groups- legs/back/ chest/glutes you will train more of your body. Combine this with short sharp intervals of aerobic exercise (normally bodyweight based and not equipment based and you have an awesome calorie burner as well as very toned lean muscle.)

(FITNESS YOGA AND CORE STABILITY TRAINING) Having a good range of flexibility and range of movement really reduces the risk of injury - this is also a great way of addressing body imbalances within the core structure - such as poor back/ abdominal strength or hip and pelvis stability.

Now most of these classes to do not offer weight loss as an initial benefit but I believe they really help people understand ‘THEIR BODY ‘and how it works and what’s not working properly- this in turn encourages other exercise that does lead to fat loss and muscle gain. Remember please consult with your GP before starting any new exercises and remember to warm up and cool down after each workout. Does Size Matter? SO, THE AGE OLD QUESTION- DOES SIZE REALLY MATTER? AND DOES SIZE REALLY MATTER IN THE WINE WORLD? I’M AFRAID TO SAY, YES IT DOES! BUT IT’S NOT NECESSARILY THE BIGGER THE BETTER.

I

’m sure you have seen, or tasted, wine from different sized bottles. Did you ever wonder if it was just for show or convenience, or did it affect the flavour? Well, it’s a combination of them all really and I thought you might be interested to know why. Here are the main size differentials for Bordeaux wines (yes, there are more sizes and exceptions for different areas just to confuse you!): - Piccolo (small in Italian) 1/4 - Demi (half in French) 1/2 - Standard (750ml) 1 - Magnum ( ‘Great’/Extra large in Latin ) 2 - Marie-Jeanne 3 - Double Magnum 4 - Jeroboam 6 - Imperiale 8 And with Champagne, they get EVEN BIGGER! - Salmanazar 12 - Balthazar 16 - Nebuchadnezzar 20 - Primat/Paramount 36 - Melchizedek 40 You are probably also wondering where all the strange names came from? Well, these are named after historical Kings and Biblical Characters. So, does size really matter? Well the bottle size preferred by Bordeaux collectors is the Imperiale (that’s 8 standard bottles). This is because it has

82 MARBELLAROCKS | ISSUE 02

the best air : wine ratio. Such a small amount of air is present between the cork and the wine; this allows the wine to develop much more slowly, thus producing much more exquisite flavours and balance to the wine overall. With Champagne, the favoured bottle is the Magnum. This is usually the largest bottle in which Champagne itself is fermented in (sometimes, rarely, the Double Magnum). Champagne is fermented within the bottle and the flavours develop over time. The maturation of Champagne, or oxidisation, can occur much more slowly in the Magnum sized bottle. This is because there is less air per litre than in the standard bottle, so there is a slower evolution of flavour and this creates a more elegant and balanced wine. So now you know the science, you’ll realise that it is best to stay well clear of anything larger than a Magnum. They are just for show as the bottles have had smaller bottles poured into them….unless of course your name is Lewis Hamilton! Also there is a danger with the smaller, 1/4 or 1/2 size bottles of Champagne. These are great fun and very handy for picnics and in nightclubs or bars. They sell fantastically well. But please don’t think these will age very well like the other bottle sizesthey won’t. They don’t stay fresh for very long, so drink them ASAP! So, when it comes to size, I have to say yes, it certainly DOES matter!

riving up from the coast of southern Spain, the road to Gaucin traverses the flat countryside littered with windmills, crosses the river Genal and continues winding upwards through the mountainside full of wild flowers, mature trees and captivating views. The village is surrounded by valleys and peaks where there are powerful walks and treks allowing you to admire the raw beauty of this delightful landscape including Los Alcornocales, a vast cork oak forest with over a million specimens. The peaks and viewpoints draw you to admire the breathtaking views across the landscape to Gibraltar and over to Africa. On a clear day you can see the ships slowly drifting across the Mediterranean and through the straits of Gibraltar with the fabulous backdrop of the Riff mountains reaching up in the distance. The area is also popular with mountain bikers, climbers and of course horse riders. If you are so inclined, there would be no better way of taking in this stunning countryside than on the back of a beautiful Andalucian horse.

84 MARBELLAROCKS | ISSUE 02

Inside the village the streets are a labyrinth of narrow passage ways, lined with beautiful white washed houses. Little do you know that behind these modest doorways are many delightful and grand homes with cultural influences in their architecture and interior design. Wandering through these streets you will find numerous tapas bars, the hidden ones always show the real side of old traditional Spain where the local workers will no doubt be sitting with a coffee and a brandy at 10 o’clock in the morning!! There are also a small number of restaurants for the more sophisticated palette to enjoy, together with local shops, two banks and a paper shop even though papers are not sold in Gaucin. For the older inhabitants the only way to keep in touch with the outside world is through the television. The internet has only recently taken off and is mainly used by the younger people and tourists. At night many of the bars come alive and if you are lucky a merry Spaniard may take to his guitar and delight you with some flamenco music.

Gaucin also celebrates traditional fiestas throughout the year. The largest of these takes place during Holy Week. The festivities culminate on Easter Sunday with the ‘toro de cuerdo’, (bull on a cord). Many people come from afar to join the locals in this fascinating event. A bull is let out into the streets of Gaucin, tied to a rope which is held by the local macho Spaniards. Amid chaos and adrenalin people run after the bull, scaling up walls and clinging onto the bars of windows as the bull charges past them. The event is totally thrilling with plenty of feasting and drinking throughout the day. In the month of August there is a flamenco festival organised by a select few of the men from the village who have in depth knowledge of the art of flamenco. It is advisable to have taken a siesta beforehand as the performances normally start just before midnight and finish at around 4am.

Due to its prominent positioning since then the castle has witnessed mayhem, impoverisation and slave trade. In the 19th century the French invaded Gaucin who stripped the town by vandalising its treasures and terrorising its citizens and their homes in the war of independence. This French invasion is re-enacted every year and is quite a dramatic Although the village still holds many traditions and the locals still live as they did many years ago – tucked away in the mountains - Gaucin has also become a fashionable retreat. The tourist popularity began in the 18th century with the Gibraltarians. It was a delightful escape from the static heat and claustrophobia of life on the rock. This then led to an influx of British tourists visiting, many of whom decided to settle. Now the tourists visit from many countries around the world. It is not hard to see why, the ambience, surrounding mountains and views are exquisite. The village has become extremely popular amongst writers, artists and photographers with the surroundings being full of colours and inspiration. In the spring, the group of local artists now even organize an annual art fair, where you can visit them in their homes or studios. It is also known to have many famous visitors. The area offers a world of seclusion and peace for the famous where they can hide from the hustle and attention of their normal lives. Gaucin holds a wealth of history dating back to pre historic times, confirmed by cave

show. Men travel from Cadiz dressed up in French army uniform, parading through the village firing cannons and rifles, while the whole of the village dress in peasant clothes. The Spanish Civil war of the 20th century saw more than 50 people shot down before the nationalists captured Gaucin in September 1936. Memories of this internal struggle still remain with some of the elderly. All this history together with its fabulous location has enticed many visitors to return year after year. It was Shane who had the initial idea for Hangar 54 after shopping with his wife he couldn’t contain his “child-like” excitement when coming across a piece of furniture that looked like it had come from an airplane. He

knew there would be a huge market for this and that weekend met with his younger brother Brett, talking well into the night and the basis of their business, Hangar 54, was formed. One of the company’s unique selling points is that no two pieces of furniture are identical, due to the nature of the materials they are working with. Which comes as a big attraction to clients.

ASTROLOGY

MARBELLA ROCKS ASTROLOGY FORECAST JULY 2014

Aries

Gemini

Leo

With Jupiter and a slew of planets assembling in your sector of romance you’re probably the hottest thing out there since Vesuvius this month. The even better news is that Jupiter is here for a 12 month stay. Mercury from the start of the month removes the barriers to Cupid delivering those love notes. Ruler Mars heads into your oh-so-sexy 8th house from the 26th July amping up the temperature even further while a Super Moon on the 12th shows you what you need to do to make a lasting impression. Make your move now no matter what it is - career or personal. You’re set for a cycle of stepping into the spotlight and being the centre of attention - or someone’s world.

Ruler Mercury finally shifts direct again in your sign at the start of the month and you’ll finally feel you’re being understood. You put communication breakdowns and delays in the past and now is the time to implement ideas and changes you’ve been sitting on. Jupiter moves into your sign from the 16th and luck is on your side for the next 12 months while Venus heads into your money zone on the 18th. I’m not saying you’re going to win the lottery but buying a ticket isn’t a bad idea however you could just be looking at that raise, promotion or landing that dream job sometime in the next year. When it comes to the good news however - you may not have to wait that long. What you hear at the end of the month could literally set the stage for even better things to come.

Step into a brand new cycle of breathtaking opportunity as your birthday season gets off to the biggest and best start you have seen for 12 years, Leo! In fact, think back to what was happening in your life back then and expect more of the same. What opportunities appeared or did you feel you missed out on? Who says you can’t make a different choice this time? You could find yourself in the spotlight this month so be camera ready or you could even encounter someone who is in the public eye in some way and be seen with them! The only setback may be that you discover something about someone you wish you hadn’t. It’s a double-edged sword as the truth is designed to set you free. However, any disillusionment that follows will be short-lived as better news arrives at the end of the month which puts a smile on your face.

Taurus

Cancer

Virgo

Ruler Venus and the now direct Mercury meet up on the 3rd this month delivering that long awaited news from a lover or new job you’ve been hankering after. It’s time to let the world know what you’re about and provided you don’t undersell yourself, your talents and creativity hold the key to freedom. The 16th sees Jupiter enter your sector of home and family. You need to think in the long term when it comes to your decisions and a move or upgrade to your home or living arrangements seems likely in the next 12 months as home improvements feature. Singles could attract that long term lover now and fiery Mars in your partnership zone from the 26th means you’ll be off in hot pursuit of ‘the one’. Time to take the initiative when it comes to love.

This month the focus is mainly on you connecting with others romantically. You’re getting extra help now as Mars is heading into your romance sector from the 16th of July. With your love life looking up, you’ll be pleased to hear your finances are also in order this month, so expect more of the folding stuff to be heading your way. However the house of your chart also could signify your partner as after all your partner should be your greatest asset. Attracting more money or love into your life begins with increasing your self-worth so work on this first - no matter what area you want to see the improvements take place in. As one shifts - so will the other. It’s all part of a bigger plan for you over the next 12 months.

Career matters which have been stalled or left hanging finally shift back into high gear at the beginning of the month. A romance could be at a ‘now or never’ stage around the 12th but if you have a lover’s tiff try not to panic as you could kiss and make-up soon afterwards. Venus is in your social and goals sector from the 18th delivering fun via friends but any love affair which starts now is likely to end up being just that - friends and no benefits - at least not of the passionate kind. You’re off on a soul journey now and touching on the deeper meaning of life and this could come about quite literally via long distance travel. Remember, our biggest learning curves come via encounters with soul mates. Get ready for close encounters of the karmic kind.

Libra

Sagittarius

Aquarius

Barriers to progress get removed at the start of the month thanks to Mercury finally turning direct again in your sector of expansion and luck. The full Moon of the 12th could see you being overprotective - perhaps of your feelings to someone close to you or you could have a crisis on the home front to deal with. Ruler Venus is about to electrify your career prospects however and Jupiter heads into your house of goals. Wishes and dreams for a year long stay from the 16th may grant more than one desire while he is in here. The key lies with your contacts and people you know to act as catalysts for this. Mars exits your sign on the 26th and heads on into your money zone. You’re on a mission now to boost your bank account but try to resist impulse spending otherwise it will go out faster than it is coming in. As for that ‘get rich quick scheme’ - don’t even be tempted.

The real star turn for all Sagittarius’s this month is your Astrology ruler Jupiter heading into your expansive 9th house - the area of your chart which he rules. You’re set for an incredible 12 month period of success, travel, learning and luck. Have your passport at the ready or be waiting to open that door to a big opportunity. This could be anything from that Big Love to a big adventure. Think back to what was happening in your life 12 years ago and get ready to experience similar themes emerging once more. You’ll also be able to see all too clearly where you held yourself back last time. This time however - the good times are definitely gonna roll. Enjoy!

While Mercury turns direct again in your romance sector giving Cupid permission to start firing off those arrows again. However, this is likely to put an end to any surprises - unpleasant or otherwise. You’re about to get a heads-up on what’s been going on behind the scenes which could have a big impact on your career moving forward now. Take action on what you hear or discover. For those of you who are single and seeking along comes your best chance to snag your ideal mate as Jupiter zooms into your partnership house and unpacks for a year long stay. Be on the look out for that Indiana Jones type set to sweep you off on one last romantic crusade before making that big commitment. Yes, this one really could be the Holy Grail you’ve been searching for.

Scorpio

Capricorn

Pisces

You may try and resist change but you should know by now that it’s futile, Scorpio. You may have had a reprieve or even thought a change wasn’t going to occur after all. However, Mercury in this sector of your chart at the start of the month says otherwise. It’s inevitable now so you may as well embrace it. Saturn finally heads direct again in your sign as well adding to the inevitability. However, Venus in your 9th says love will expand your world and it could arrive in the form of someone larger than life or from far away while Jupiter shuttles into your career sector giving you the best opportunity for making that serious move. Build that powerbase. If you think you lack the courage or conviction - think again empowerment is in your sign this month. Whatever it is you want you’re willing to push through any barriers to get it.

Pay attention to your emotional needs this month, Capricorn. The full Super Moon in your sign on the 12th points to a transformation - either in a key relationship or to you finally understanding what it is you need - and being unafraid to ask for it. This is all happening ahead of a big change in your life which could see you benefiting from someone else’s generosity or else you and someone close pooling your resources during the next 12 months. You’ll see all too clearly that you can achieve more together than either of you could apart. Whatever you want to achieve there’s no need to go it alone. Others are more than usually cooperative and long term love returns to those heady first days feelings. Singles could attract someone with sexy intensity - or are they just a reflection of your own super-hotness now?

While home and money matters may occupy you at the start of the month get ready for the fast lane after the 18th when Venus visits the romance sector of your chart. You could be seen with all the right people in all the right places and as for love you don’t have to go looking as the one you’ve been searching for could find you. It’s all about fun, hedonism and pleasure but don’t get too carried away and watch the company you’re keeping around the full Moon of the 12th otherwise you could get caught up in someone else’s drama. Do you need it? Jupiter enters your area of work and wellbeing from the 16th and sometime in the next 12 months that dream job could be yours. With a small amount of effort on your part you could see doors open for you with you only having to give a tiny push.
