From the Chairman of the Board Marburn Academy changes lives. And because of the generous financial gifts we receive, Marburn Academy is changing the lives of more students than ever before. On behalf of the Board of Trustees and the entire Marburn Academy family, I thank you for the extraordinary part you played in our success this past year. This report details the financial gifts made to Marburn Academy between July 1, 2016 and June 30, 2017. Through the generous gifts from 367 donors, we surpassed our fundraising goals totaling more that $622,000. Our donor participation rate increased to 56% of those who were solicited, with an average gift of $890. Contributions came from many constituencies – current and former trustees, parents, grandparents, alumni, parents of alumni, friends, current and former faculty and staff, corporations, and foundations. We are especially proud to report that the faculty and staff participation rate is at an all-time high of 99%. Every gift makes a difference at Marburn Academy, and we are most grateful. I want to thank the members of the Board of Trustees who served this year. It has been an honor to work with you. All of us offer special thanks to Craig Morrison who stepped down from his position as Chairman of the Board in November 2016. For more than a decade, Craig unselfishly contributed his time and resources to make Marburn Academy a better place. His exemplary leadership of the Board of Trustees and his extraordinary generosity have been instrumental in building our new home and making sure Marburn Academy could change so many lives. I also want to express my appreciation to Amelia McCarty who completed her term on the Board of Trustees this year; we wish her well in her new role. As we continue to grow into our new home, your participation in the life of Marburn Academy is more important than ever. Your support demonstrates commitment to our future and inspires others to become involved in the life of Marburn Academy as we offer the finest education for bright students who learn differently. From the student who gave his own earnings to the Annual Fund and the Capital Campaign, to the major donor whose gift impacted Marburn in ways that forever improved the student experience, the families who gave both their time and generous financial gifts, to the struggling family who is limited in what they can give, but does so with a sense of great commitment, to the corporation who asks “what do your students really need right now? All of these helped to build our future, support the dreams, and affirm the lives of the special young people who are our students.

Thank you for your support of Marburn Academy!

Current Students Carmen Hessler and Macy Payne Best Friends for Life Carmen and Macy met in the fall of 2014 when they enrolled at Marburn Academy. The girls bonded over the fact that they are both adopted and that they look so much alike that they are often mistaken for sisters. Teacher Leslie Dilley had both girls in her homeroom last year, in math/language classes and in Glitter Club. She says, “In the time I have known Macy, I have watched her become more comfortable with her own strengths and areas of growth. Macy is a friend to everyone and spreads kindness like confetti.” Macy’s mom Kimberly Payne says that her daughter’s time at Marburn has been critically important. “She was very frustrated in public school because the pace at which learning took place overwhelmed her. Knowing she can work at her own pace has boosted her confidence, and she now loves school.” Mrs. Dilley says, “Carmen has a gift for art, especially drawing. During my time knowing Carmen, I’ve watched her confidence grow in every area of her day. She started out shy and reluctant to take risks in the classroom, and has grown into a wise and responsible student who isn’t afraid to share her deep thinking with the class. If confidence could be measured, Carmen’s would be off the charts.” “Just recently I had a chance to review a group of photos that were taken of Carmen and her classmates over the course of last year,” said Terri Hessler, Carmen’s mom. “It pleased me greatly when I saw the huge smiles during classroom activities that grew larger as the year progressed. It is so gratifying as a parent to know that she is truly happy at school.” Marburn Academy is a place where lifelong friendships build confidence and foster learning. The girls illustrate it best in their story and drawing here.

DEVON JORDAN Marburn Academy Class of 2017

a completely foreign experience for me. I was immediately welcomed as if I were at home, and it was uncomfortable. I figured it was fake. How could people be so willing to help one another? How could teachers be so attentive about meeting the needs of every student? Quickly, however, the school won my heart. Unconditionally, my teachers accepted me, and worked tirelessly to help me feel confident in my abilities. I learned to take heart that no matter what I needed to succeed, the faculty would work hard to make it a reality. . . they’d taught me that I wasn’t disabled; rather, I was just different. They’d taught me that I could — that I was not broken, and that I had a future . . . .I was seen as a member of the Marburn community.

I was diagnosed with ADHD late in my 2nd grade year. Although the diagnosis provided clarity, it reinforced the idea that I was a mistake — a smudge on a painting. It fed the idea that I would never be successful, because I couldn’t focus on anything long enough. I carried the shame of my disability through elementary school and into middle school, where I was ferociously bullied. Miraculously, in my freshman year, just as all hope seemed lost, my wonderful parents found Marburn. Walking into a classroom of students who weren’t just at school to learn, but also to support and care for one another, was

8

I discovered that Marburn is not just a place to learn, but that it is a place to grow together and nurture one another, a place to discover your strengths, and to realize that a “disability” is only a difference; one of the many traits that defines a person . . . I know that I am fully capable of becoming whomever, and whatever I want to become. I am empowered to greatness, and live with confidence in my abilities. I could, and I can. Marburn taught me that. Devon Jordan graduated cum laude from Marburn Academy on May 25, 2017. Beginning in the fall 2017, he will be a full-time AmeriCorps member, based in Denver, Colorado.

FRANK DITULLIO When I was about 7 years old, I was told I was different: I had ADHD and difficulty reading. But that’s okay, right? So what if I had attention issues or trouble with reading? That just made me different. It just made me special. It turns out, it did make me special, but according to the school I attended, it was not okay.

Marburn Academy Alumnus

One time, my friend had this awesome Star Wars book, and I asked him if I could read it with him. He laughed and said, “You can’t read this. It’s too hard for you.” Honestly, he was right. No one had taught me how to read something that advanced. It was too difficult for me. . . Eventually, my academic self-esteem fell to the point where I didn’t want to do schoolwork at all, or I would just pretend to do it. My family enrolled me in Marburn Academy before the 3rd grade. At this point, I’d basically accepted the fact that I was stupid and couldn’t learn . . . On my first day at Marburn, I was probably the unhappiest person in the world. The teacher leading my “new kids” group introduced a “getting to know you” exercise. Eventually, we started talking about our personal lives and interacting with other groups. By the time it was over, I

we started doing schoolwork, I never felt stupid or that the work was too difficult. Instead, I felt encouragement. All my classes were small, which made me feel like I could participate more. What helped even more was that the teachers always seemed to be so proud when I got an answer right, saying things like, “Good job, Frank,” or “Excellent!” I felt smart. I felt confident. I liked school. Every teacher treated me like an individual and not like just another kid that they had in their class for a year. I learned what it meant to be a good friend, teammate, and leader. Because of all the support and the feeling that everyone cared and tailored the teaching to my needs, I learned not to be afraid to ask questions. I learned to advocate for myself and, most importantly, that with some help, I could do anything a normal kid could do, sometimes even more.

I also made a lot of good friends as a result of the social skills I

Today, I am at The Ohio State University main campus as a scholar athlete on the varsity fencing team. I’m proud of my accomplishments and look forward to what I’m going to be. I know I could not have done any of this without Marburn. Everyone is different and everyone is special. What Marburn does is embrace your differences and teach to the differences. By making that adjustment, Marburn can unlock potential in all aspects of life beyond just teaching a child to read. The skills Marburn gave me prepared me to take on life’s challenges. I learned to celebrate being different, that people truly believe I can do great things, and that I should also believe in myself. I am very lucky to have gone to Marburn.
