THROUGH A GLASS, LIGHTLY

The exhibition Through A Glass, Lightly at Tensta Centrum connects to the work of Frederick Kiesler (1890 –1965) —visionary architect, theoretician, theater designer, artist and sculptor. The project accompanies Kiesler’s retrospective at Tensta Konsthall and focuses, among his many interests, on shop windows as a space of visual communication and speculation.

In his essay “Some Notes on Shop Windows” Kiesler proposes that the shop window should be the site for a play, starring Mr. Hat and Miss Glove.

He refers to the shop window as a stage, describing the street as an auditorium with constantly changing viewers. He maintains the significance of the commercial market for art and architecture, since he sees the department store as an important conduit for communicating with the public. The department store is regarded as “the true introducer of modernism to the public at large. It reveals contemporary art to American commerce.” And it should bring new art to the public.

Through A Glass, Lightly has been realized with the collaboration of shop owners at Tensta Centrum.

The exhibition features the commission of new shop window displays reflecting on issues of presentation and representation. Can the department store go beyond its function of a simple capitalistic tool? Can it reflect critically on questions of fashion, common space and identity?

The project is part of the exhibition “Frederick Kiesler: Visions at Work. Utställningen Through a Glass, Lightly i Tensta Centrum anknyter till arkitekten, teoretikern, scenografen, konstnären och skulptören Frederick Kieslers (1890 –1965) arbeten och utgör ett appendix till Keislers retrospektiv på Tensta konsthall genom att fokusera på ett av hans många intressen: skyltfönstret som plats för visuell kommunikation.

I sin essä “Anteckningar kring skyltfönster” skriver Keisler att skyltfönstret utgör platsen för ett alldeles särskilt skådespel där huvudrollerna spelas av herr Hatt och fru Handske. Han betonar den kommersiella marknadens vikt för konsten och arkitekturen genom att beskriva skyltfönstrets scen som en viktig kanal för kommunikation till gatans auditorium av ständigt växlande publik. Varuhuset betraktar han som “den sanna introduktören av modernismen till en större publik. Den visar samtida konst för den amerikanska kommersen. Och den borde föra ny konst till allmänheten”.

Utställningen Through A Glass, Lightly har kommit till stånd i samarbete med ett antal butiksinnehavare i Tensta Centrum. Utställningen presenterar ett antal skyltfönster som tillsammans berör frågor kring presentation och representation: kan varuhuset överskrida sin funktion som kapitalistiskt verktyg? Kan det reflektera kritiskt kring frågor som mode, offentligt utrymme och identitet?

Through A Glass, Lightly utgör en del av den större utställningen Frederick Kiesler: Visioner i arbete. The First Stone was created from a piece of concrete that fell out from one of the old oaks nearby the “Prince Oak” on Waldemarsudde. The concrete was poured inside the trunk of the oak in mid-1900s to prevent it from falling apart after it was struck by a lightning. The veiny and irregular surface of the concrete was created to resemble the bark of the oak.

Oaks were protected in Sweden in the 16th century so that they could be used as timber to build warships. They were the property of the king and the punishment for cutting down an oak was death. Before the 16th century, oaks were often considered sacred trees. Concrete, on the other hand, can be considered the symbolic material of modernism: both cheap and easy to shape, it enabled a new architecture connected to social issues. It was at once democratic and visionary, as was also perceived by Frederick Kiesler in his projects. The First Stone focuses on the hybrid status of today’s nature situated between the desire for the original and pure, and human constructions. By doing so it critically reflects on the complex origin of the object.

The First Stone weighs about 750 kg and the dimensions are approximately 100×100×50. The surface was lightly sprayed by the artist with stone-like paint that blurs even more the boundaries between natural and artificial matter ■

Den första stenen transporterades på en lastbil från Nationalstadsparken Djurgården i Stockholm till Tensta.

Stenen är tillverkad av en bit av betong som fallit ur en av de gamla ekarna i närheten av Prinsens ek på Waldemarsudde. Betongen var hälld i ekens stam någon gång i mitten av 1900-talet för att hindra den från att dö efter ett blixtnedslag. Den ådriga, oregelbundna ytan gjordes för att efterlikna ekens bark.

På 1500-talet fridlystes eken i Sverige, och reserverades som virke för krigsfartyg. Ekarna var kungens egendom och det var belagt med dödsstraff att hugga ner dem. Fram till 1500-talet sågs eken ofta som ett heligt träd. Betong kan anses vara ett material som symboliserar modernismen. Eftersom den var både billig och lätt att forma möjliggjorde den en ny arkitektur, som ofta var kopplad till sociala frågor. Den var på en gång demokratisk och visionär, vilket Frederick Kiesler använt sig av i sina projekt.

Den första stenen fokuserar på den hybridstatus dagens natur har, belägen mittemellan sökandet efter det ursprungliga och sanna och det mänskliga konstruerandet. Därigenom utgör det en kritisk reflektion över objektets komplexa ursprung. Den första stenen väger ca 750 kg och är ca 100×100×50 cm. Ytan är lätt behandlad av konstnären med stenliknande spray och färg, vilket ännu mer suddar ut gränserna mellan naturlig och artificiell materia.

Johanna Gustafsson Fürst (b. 1973) Is an artist based in Stockholm.

She works in a field between self-organized platforms, performances, text, sculptures and site-specific installations. The starting point for her artistic practice is the constantly present concern about the relations between the self and the world and the desire for the fusion of the boundaries between them. She also has a longstanding interest in how everyday life encounters political and social systems and how these merge in objects, surfaces and spaces.

Johanna holds an MFA from the Royal Institute of Art in Stockholm. She is is represented by Belenius / Nordenhake Gallery.

Her recent and upcoming exhibitions include Kalmar Konsthall (SE), Bonnier Konsthall (SE), Consonni (ES), Moderna Museet, Malmö (SE) and kim?Contemporary Art Centre(LV)).

The First Stone is a project connected to Interflora Flower Shop in Tensta galleria owned by Faraj Chamoun. Mr. Chamoun is from Syria and has been living in Sweden since 1993. For the last twentytwo years he has been working as a florist. He believes after so much time he can always guess what a client is really looking for.

Johanna Gustafsson Fürst är född 1973 och är baserad i Stockholm.

Hon arbetar i ett fält som spänner mellan självorganiserade plattformar, performances, text, skulpturer och platsspecifika installationer. Utgångspunkten är en ständigt pågående upptagenhet av relationen mellan jaget och världen och en önskan om fusion och gränser däremellan, ett intresse för hur vardagen möter politiska och sociala system och hur dessa sammanfaller i föremål, ytor och rum.

Johanna har en MFA (2003) från Kungliga Konsthögskolan i Stockholm. och representeras av Galleri Belenius / Nordenhake.

Hennes senaste och kommande utställningar inkluderar Kalmar Konsthall (SE), Bonnier Konsthall (SE), Consonni (ES), Moderna Museet, Malmö (SE) och kim? (LV) Projektet The First Stone är knutet till Inteflorabutiken i Tensta Centrum som drivs av Faraj Chamoun. Chamoun kommer från Syrien och har bott i Sverige sedan 1993. I tjugotvå år har han arbetat som florist och tror sig numera alltid kunna gissa på förhand vad hans kund är ute efter.

The new display window project for Seynur, Design from Istanbul at Tensta Centrum is a result of a meeting between the artist Carl Palm and the owner of the shop Ms. Nilüfer Erzurum. What followed was a dialogue of textiles, textures and patterns. With both precision and a belief in the material itself, together they have explored new artistic qualities by weaving together the materials displayed. Palm’s explosively colorful blankets embrace in a warm cocoon Erzurum’s fabrics implying both a willingness to protect and to collaborate. Images of different objects and shapes are stitched on the blankets, transforming Palm’s work into a hosting space, a material archive open to other entities and interventions.

Palm’s and Erzurum’s research on the inner capacity of materials to dialogue among themselves ends in a hybrid display installation where authorship is questioned, as well as the hypothetically irrefutable difference between contemporary art and traditional design ■

Det nya skyltfönstret till butiken Seynur, Design by Istanbul, i Tensta Centrum är resultatet av ett möte mellan konstnären Carl Palm och butiksägaren Nilüfer Erzurum som utmynnat i en dialog av textilier och mönster. Med precision och tilltro till materialet har de tillsammans utforskat nya konstnärliga kvaliteter genom att väva ihop de utställda materialen. Palms explosivt färggranna filtar omfamnar Erzurums tyger som en varm kokong och omfattar därmed både en vilja att skydda och att samarbeta. På filtarna har bilder av olika objekt och former nålats fast vilket förvandlat Palms arbete till både en värdplats och ett materiellt arkiv som står öppet för olika element och ingrepp.

Palms och Erzurums undersökningar av materialens kapacitet att träda i dialog med varandra utmynnar i en hybridinstallation där upphovsmannaskapet är ifrågasatt liksom skillnaden mellan samtida konst och traditionellt konsthantverk ■

Carl Palm (b. 1980) is an artist based in Stockholm. He builds hybrid discourses generated form conversations between objects of plural nature. The concept of “mixed media” finds here a clearer sense through his approach to objects: it considers relations of resemblance and contrast inside the exhibition room, the changing significance of the goods through changes and displacement, and the sculpture´s own memory. Not that far from animism, Palm approaches a wide sculptural practice from a post-curatorial behavior, researching the inner capacity of the objects to interact inside the white-cube, being specially sensitive to their previous story outside the museum.

His recent and upcoming exhibitions include: Parallel Oaxaca (MX) Kunsthalle Athena (GR), MACBA (ES), TOVES (DE), Kunsthalle Wien (AU), CAC (LT), Center (D), ARTIUM (ES), Nosbaum Reding (LU), Komplot (BE) Index – The Swedish Contemporary Art Foundation (SE) and IASPIS at the 12th Istanbul Biennale (TR).

In collaboration with the Seynur (Design by Istanbul) Tensta Centrum, owned by Nilüfer Erzurum. Nilüfer Erzurum has been the owner of the shop for the last year and half. Before, she worked in a day care centre in Stockholm. She decided to open the shop because she thought there weren’t any shops in Stockholm catering to the needs of Muslim women. Her aim is to import good quality materials and modern Turkish fashion to Sweden, she believes this to be especially important nowadays when so many people are judged on the basis of their look. Ms Erzurum has lived her whole life in Tensta and says people are over-critical of this neighborhood. She is very happy with how business is going and is even considering to open a second branch soon. Her biggest victory as a shop owner is the fact that both Swedish and non-Swedish women buy her clothes.

Carl Palm (f. 1980) är konstnär, bosatt och verksam i Stockholm.

Han arbetar med diskurshybrider som genereras i relationerna mellan mångfacetterade objekt. Konceptet ”mixed media” kommer här tydligt till uttryck genom hans sätt att närma sig till objekten: i beaktandet av relationen mellan identifikation och kontrast i utställningsrummet, objektens förändrade betydelse genom skiftningar och förskjutningar, liksom skulpturens eget minne. Palm närmar sig en omfattande skulptural praktik från en post-curatorialt håll vilket inte ligger långt ifrån den animistiska uppfattningen genom att han letar efter objektens inre kapacitet att interagera inom den vita kuben, och särskilt uppmärksammar deras tidigare historia, utanför museet.

Palms senaste och kommande utställningar omfattar: Parallel Oaxaca (Mexico), Kunsthalle Athena (Grekland), MACBA (Spanien), TOVES (Danmark), Kunsthalle Wien (Österrike), CAC (Litauen), Center (D), ARTIUM (Spanien), Nosbaum Reding (Luxemburg), Komplot (Belgien) Index – The Swedish Contemporary Art Foundation (Sverige) och IASPIS på tolfte internationella biennalen i Istanbul (Turkiet).

I samarbete med Seynur (Design by Istanbul) i Tensta Centrum och butiksinnehavaren Nilüfer Erzurum. Nilüfer Erzurum, som drivit butiken i ett och ett halvt år, arbetade tidigare på ett dagcenter i Stockholm. Beslutet att öppna Seynur (Design by Istanbul) uppstod till följd av hon tyckte att det saknades affärer i Stockholm som riktade sig specifikt till muslimska kvinnor, vilket hon menade var en brist i en tid när många människor bedöms utefter hur de ser ut.

Erzurums ambition är att importera material av god kvalitet enligt modernt turkiskt snitt till Sverige. Hon har bott hela sitt liv i Tensta och tycker att människor är överdrivet kritiska mot sin omgivning där. Hon är glad över att det går bra för hennes butik och funderar numera på att öppna ytterligare en butik snart.

In the three-dimensional landscape of baubau (to James Langdon) different elements, techniques, and influences of Cèline Condorelli’s practice cohabit, are layered on, and enact possible stories.

The wallpaper billboard acts as a score and a documentation of the relationships between a series of narrative objects, both existing and fictional, that question the legal status of objects themselves. Among the objects it is also possible to spot some of Frederick Kiesler’s exhibition display structures. This complex visual landscape has been installed in the Tasty Fried Chicken restaurant at Tensta Centrum, a meeting point for the local community, a place of discussions, mediations and intensive correlations between the individual and different social groups ■

I det tredimensionella landskapet i baubau (till James Langdon), samsas coh lagras olika element, tekniker och influeser från Céline Condorellis verksamhet för att iscensätta olika historier. Reklamtavlan utgör både ett nod och en dokumentation av relationen mellan en rad narrativa objekt, befintliga och fiktiva, vilket ifrågasätter deras status som objekt. Här gör sig Frederick Kieslers utställningsstrukturer märkbara. Detta komplexa landskap har installerats på Tasty Fried Chickenrestaurangen i Tensta Centrum, en lokal mötesplats där det pågår en intensiv växelverkan mellan indivier och olika sociala grupper ■

Céline Condorelli (b. 1974) lives and works between London and Milan. Her work fluidly incorporates the languages of sculpture, architecture, design and writing in its questioning of what it means to ‘exhibit’. This interest was developed through the production of installations, exhibitions and publications that emphasize display, proposing it as her main artistic medium in both form and subject, through the construction of display structures, staging devices and framing mechanisms, the apparatuses of visibility that she designates as ‘support structures’.

Her work has been exhibited in different venues such as Artists Space in New York (2009), SALT in Istanbul (2012), Lunds Konsthall in Lund (2012), Project Arts Centre in Dublin (2013) and Grazer Kunstverein in Graz (2013). In 2010 her work was shown at the Manifesta 8 European Biennale of Contemporary Art (Murcia) and in 2014 she had solo exhibitions at Chisenhale Gallery in London and Van Abbemuseum in Eindhoven; the same year the artist realized bau bau at GfZK (Museum of Contemporary Art Leipzig). Condorelli is one of the founding directors of the artistsrun space Eastside Projects (Birmingham, UK).

In collaboration with TCF Tasty Fried Chicken, owned by Sami Al Hallak and Elfat El Halawani. The couple opened the restaurant four years ago. After a year, business was going so well they decided to rent a second space at Tensta Centrum. They believe people in Tensta need more public spaces to sit and talk. Their restaurant is one of the most lively places in Tensta Centrum. People go there regardless of the fact if they are buying food or not.

Céline Condorelli (f. 1974) är bosatt och verksam i både London och Milano. Hon är intresserad av att undersöka vad det innebär att ”ställa ut” någonting och hennes arbeten omfattar uttryck hämtade från skulptur, arkitektur, design och skrivande. Konstruktionen av utställningsstrukturer, redskap för iscensättning och inramningsmekanismer betecknar hon som “supportstrukturer” och hennes intresse har framför allt utvecklats genom installationer, utställningar och publikationer där utställningen som fenomen understruktis.

Hennes arbeten har ställts ut i en rad olika sammanhang, som till exempel Artists Space in New York (2009), SALT i Istanbul (2012), Lunds konsthall i Lund (2012), Project Arts Centre i Dublin (2013) och Grazer Kunstverein i Graz (2013). 2010 visades hennes verk på den europeiska biennalen för samtida konst Manifesta 8 (Murcia) och 2014 hade hon en separatutställning på Chisenhale Gallery i London och på Van Abbemuseum i Eindhoven. Samma år uppförde hon bau bau på GfZK (Galerie für Zeitgenössische Kunst i Leipzig). Condorelli är en av grundarna till den konstnärsdrivna initiativet Eastside Projects (Birmingham, Storbritannien).

I samarbete med Tasty Fried Chicken, som drivs av Sami Al Hallak och Elfat El Halawani. Paret öppnade restaurangen för fyra år sedan. Redan efter ett år gick affärerna så bra att de hyrde ytterligare en lokal i Tensta Centrum. De tror båda att Tenstaborna behövde fler offentliga plaster att sitta och prata på. Idag är deras restaurang är en av de mest livaktiga platserna i Tensta Centrum och folk kommer dit oavsett om de ska äta eller inte.
