A Brief History History of Fundus Related Perimetry In examination of the retina, it has always been important to establish the relationship between measurements of vision and ability to perform everyday tasks. To assess visual abilities, the main functional approach has historically been to measure the visual acuity, still considered the standard in clinical practice. In the past, quantifiable measurements of distance and near visual acuity were assumed to be equated to one’s ability to function in the seeing world. (1) However, these variables do not provide a true representation of visual ability, because they do not allow for detection of the real impact of retinal deficiencies on quality of life and on daily activities.
