Liebherr Heavy Lift Ship Cranes With capacities ranging from 120 tonnes to 600 tonnes, the Liebherr CBB cranes cover all the main area of the heavy lift segment. Above that range the delivery program includes new developments up to 1250 tonnes SWL. One of the main advantages of CBB cranes is their low self-weight. This has a positive effect on the stability of the vessel as well as cargo handling –simultaneously increasing safety and performance.

Trade Show Season: SMM 2018 With the trade shoW season Well under Way, We Would like to prepare you for one of the biggest shoWs in the industry, sMM. from 4 to 7 september, this event will take place at the hamburg Messe complex. With roughly 2,200 exhibitors and 50,000 visitors from every continent, SMM is one of the world’s most important industry events. the 90,000m2 exhibition covers the entire value chain of the maritime sector, bringing together international decision-makers and experts and providing a platform for highlighting innovative technology. Based on the overwhelming number of applications, this year’s edition is set to offer an unparalleled opportunity to stimulate business. The practical clustering of exhibitor groups in the exhibition halls, together with the theme-routes that were introduced during the last edition of SMM, enable visitors to find what they are looking for with ease. We will outline the show and some not-to-miss exhibitors on page 8. In this special SMM issue, we’ll also present you with five ship reports, including one on MsC seaview (p. 64). the launch of MsC seaview on 4 June 2018 was a major highlight for her owner, MsC Cruises, as she is the one new-build coming into service this year; the second ship that was built by Fincantieri for MSC Cruises in six months; the third vessel to come into service in just twelve months, and the fifteenth ship to join MSC Cruises’ global fleet. Another ship report I would like to mention is the one about Bravenes. Van Oord has taken subsea rock installation (SRI) to a whole new level. This specially designed vessel has an innovative launching and recovery system on board that is truly unique. read more about this on page 42. of course, there is more: this issue features an extensive Cranes, Hoisting & Lifting special, where we profile some wellknown lifting experts. We also take a closer look at the German shipbuilding industry. Enjoy this issue of ShipBuilding Industry; my colleague Tom dietvorst and i are looking forward to catching up with you at sMM hamburg. see you there, Marco geels publisher MARCO@ynFpuBLISHERS.COM

very two years, representatives of the maritime industry and experts from all over the world gather in Hamburg to showcase innovative developments and leading-edge technologies and to discuss the industry’s prospects.

With roughly 2,200 exhibitors and 50,000 visitors from all continents, SMM is one of the world’s most important industry events. The practical clustering of exhibitor groups in the exhibition halls, together with the theme routes that were introduced during the last edition of SMM, enable visitors to find what they are looking for with ease. The 2018 event will take place from 4 to 7 September, once again under the honorary patronage of German Chancellor Dr Angela Merkel. The four-day event is preceded by an inaugural international conference, the Maritime Future Summit

SMMart Shipping

Apart from the trade fair itself, SMM offers a diverse programme consisting of workshops, symposiums, seminars and networking events. Top items on the agenda will be the digital revolution, eco-friendly propulsion technologies, new growth opportunities and the challenges associated with disruptive markets. Smart Shipping and industry 4.0 will take centre stage. Consistent with the motto of this year’s SMM, ‘Trends in SMMart Shipping’, digitalisation is believed to be a key driver of increased efficiency within the sector. The enormous advances in the field of robotics make investments in research and development of paramount importance for the maritime industry. As was the case with 3D printing, the realisation of many ideas can take years, but these promising emerging technologies could lead to new business models. SMM 2018 is the first maritime trade fair that will include a special exhibition to highlight the potential use of 3D printing technology.

consolidation process among line operators. Stricter environmental regulations have further increased the pressure, and identifying the most suitable technology remains difficult. The new regulations on Co2 emissions and ballast water management could, however, prove to actually stimulate the shipbuilders’ and suppliers’ business. The campaign to endorse a transition in maritime energy has been under way for years, and there is a strong commitment to

promote a Co2-neutral global economy. The switch to low-emission gas fuels is the silver bullet to decarbonise international shipping.

Smart Solutions

Digital solutions are revealing their economic potential in concrete ways. Classification society Dnv GL, for instance, uses drones equipped with cameras to inspect the structural elements of ships, tanks and offshore installations. They also introduced an electronic format to manage

ship certificates in october last year. Apart from increasing the efficiency of operational processes, digitalisation will also improve safety on board. The new level of decision support will provide better control over assets and systems, increase onboard situational awareness, and reduce human factor incidents and operational risk. real-time cargo and route information, as well as data relating to the operation and condition of the vessel and its components, will make future supply chains more adaptable and efficient. The development and growing use of cloud-based technologies and computer power will not only change how we manage data, but how we design, build and test vessels, their systems and components.

the utilisation of Arctic resources. All of these future-oriented topics will play a key role at SMM.

Digital Route

A listing in the Digital route gives SMM exhibitors the opportunity to show that they provide innovative digital products and services such as centralised onshore remote management for partly autonomous ships, data and network security, or for highthroughput satellite (HTS) communication solutions. The Digital route icon appears next to the listing of the participating company in the catalogue, online exhibitor directory, visitor Guide and app. i. www.smm-hamburg.com

While the situation in some market segments has improved, the survival of many shipyards and suppliers depends on niche markets such as the cruise ship segment, which has seen an unprecedented boom in europe. Another important topic is the transfer of knowledge to new and attractive fields such as marine research, deep-sea mining and

3 September Maritime Future Summit The second Maritime Future Summit, which will be held the day before SMM, will shed light on the latest developments in automation, digitalisation and data management. Major players and decision-makers will discuss the latest themes and visions in shipping and shipbuilding.

4 September TradeWinds Shipowners Forum This year, SMM will host the TradeWinds Shipowners’ Forum for the first time. The TradeWinds Shipowners’ Forum is an interactive discussion, led by a panel of experts. it was set up to reflect the priorities and concerns TradeWinds’ readers and will comprise two compelling and incisive discussion sessions. The Forum includes a market overview in which the panel can tackle the most hotly debated issues in shipping today: the latest trends in design, construction and newbuilding, sector overviews and game changers, investor sentiment and sources of finance, vessel valuations, digitalisation and the opportunities and risks of technology and the ‘connected ship’.

5 September The Global Maritime Environmental Congress (GMEC) Alternative energy sources and ‘green’ technologies that enable more sustainable and eco-friendly activities are an important part of the future of the maritime industry. GMeC offers fascinating talks, heated debates and a creative exchange of ideas and visions on this topic, distributed over three panels as follows: GMEC Panel I – Preparing for Ballast Water Treatment one year after the iMo’s Ballast Water Management Convention came into force, this session will provide an overview of installed applications and examine which technology is really fulfilling the goals. Apart from the system selection itself, there are numerous technical obstacles to overcome in retrofitting the equipment to existing vessels. practical case studies will be presented from the perspective of a regulator, a supplier and an owner’s association. GMEC Panel II – Dealing with the environmental challenges of the future panel ii of the GMeC consists of two parts. The first part focusses on greenhouse gas strategies and energy efficiency; the whys and wherefores of choices versus economics, regulations and so on. This session examines short-term solutions and the difficulties in making decisions now, without prior knowledge of what future regulations will decree. The second part of this panel discusses emission control. How can vessel owners best comply with the upcoming global sulphur cap? This session includes case studies on vessel operation using a combination of new fuels and different technical solutions.

t the launching ceremony, many representatives, construction and financing partners were present. Marija Strikić of the Split Down Syndrome Association was Godmother, and launched the ship in the traditional way, cutting the ceremonial rope and breaking a champagne bottle against the side of the Hondius.

Fortified Polar Class 6 Technology Measuring 107.6m in length and 17.6m in width, Hondius is the world’s first civilian vessel built in the LR PC6 class, which meets the latest and highest requirements of Lloyd’s Register for Polar Class 6 vessels -

the highest Polar Class notation for icestrengthened vessels. The polar expedition vessel is equipped with a propulsion system that consists of two main engines and one adjustable pitch propeller, with a total output of 4,260kW. Hondius’ flexible power management, combined with a shaft generator instead of a diesel-driven generator, allows for low fuel consumption and CO2 emissions. The vessel can reach a maximum speed of 15 knots. This makes Hondius flexible, fast and very well-suited for advanced, innovative exploratory quality voyages in the Arctic and Antarctic Regions. Oceanwide Expeditions opted for conventional diesel propulsion

because of Hondius’ unconventional sailing area. The engines and power systems need to function without requiring any remote service or support. Having a fuel pump on board, for instance, that needs to be regulated after installation through a laptop by a service engineer, is not very convenient while cruising the polar regions, as strong satellite connections cannot be guaranteed.

High Comfort in the Polar Regions With 72 crew and staff members (including expedition and hotel staff) at their service, passengers of Hondius can expect high hotel and expedition standards.

Accommodation options range from tworoom and four-room cabins to spacious apartments with multiple security systems, providing for a safe and comfortable stay. The vessel accommodates 174 passengers in total and offers one spacious Hondius suite (35m2), six grand suites with balcony (27m2), eight junior suites (19-20m2), eight superior cabins, (20-21m2), eleven twin deluxe cabins, (19-21m2), fourteen twin window cabins (12-14m2), 28 twin porthole cabins, two triple porthole cabins and four quadruple porthole cabins (porthole cabin sizes vary from 12-18m2). While cruising, passengers can enjoy the sizable observation lounge, a fully filled bar

and a separate library. One deck has been entirely reserved for lectures and presentations in a large observation lounge and an additional, separate lecture room.

Fast Ship-To-Shore Operations Oceanwide Expeditions’ philosophy is to keep nautical legs short and focus on fast and effective access to shore and near-shore activities. To achieve this, Hondius features an indoor Zodiac boarding zone with two separate gangways for easy entry into these shuttle boats, and a powerful fleet of Zodiacs to suit all outings and swift landing operations for all passengers at the same time.

The Polar code The vessel fully complies with the mandatory requirements of the Polar code, adopted by the International Maritime Organization (IMO) for safe ship operation and the protection of the Polar environment. Furthermore, Hondius is built according to the latest requirements of the IMO with regard to the safety of life at sea (SOLAS) and the prevention of pollution from ships (MARPOL) for passenger vessels. To ensure minimum impact on the environment, Hondius complies with the latest green requirements imposed by the IMO by using only bio-degradable paints and lubrication oils and LED interior and exterior lighting. Waste heat, such as cooling water for the main engines, is reused for the production of fresh water. Moreover, steam is used for onboard heating and the use of electrical heating is minimised.

Oceanwide Expeditions and Brodosplit Oceanwide Expeditions ordered the expedition vessel in November 2016 from shipbuilder Brodosplit, and found the collaboration with the Croatian shipyard to be excellent. Wijnand van Gessel, owner of Oceanwide Expeditions, states, “Our team has a great deal of cooperation with the shipyard. I am very pleased with the quality of the ship, which is already quite wellequipped, with a built-in drive and a lot of equipment for passenger and crew accommodation.” The gracefulness of the Hondius design is totally in keeping with the spectacular polar landscapes. The vessel upholds a high standard of luxury, while maintaining Oceanwide’s distinctive comfortable and informal atmosphere.

designers, who, throughout this project, have successfully confirmed Brodosplit’s high position in the rankings of technical competency and architectural competitiveness. According to Tomislav Debeljak, Chairman of the Board of Brodosplit, “the ship is a symbol of Brodosplit restructuring and a breakthrough in organisational and technical design. Hondius was built with new software, tools and technology, especially in the outfitting department. Between 80% and 85% of the ship was already equipped during the construction phase on the slipway, which has resulted in better quality of construction, shorter deadlines and lower construction costs.” i. www.oceanwide-expeditions.com i. www.brodosplit.hr

It requires all ships engaged in international traffic to manage their ballast water and sediments to a certain standard, according to a ship-specific ballast-water management plan. Vessels are also required to carry a ballast-water record book and an

BWMS suppliers fear that shipping companies will try to install their treatment system at the last minute, causing a sudden rush in refit orders international ballast-water management certificate. At the 71st session of IMO’s Marine Environment Protection Committee (MEPC), draft amendments to the BWM Convention were approved. The amendments clarify when ships must comply with the requirement to meet the so-called D-2 standard, and make the code for approval of ballast-water management systems (BMWS) mandatory.

Meeting the D-2 Standard

Japanese kelp was introduced into various local ecosystem through ballast water.

New ships are already required to meet the D-2 standard. Existing ships were initially only required to meet the D-1 standard (which requires ships to exchange their ballast water in open seas, away from coastal waters), but following entry into force, they should be D-2 compliant at the time of the first International Oil Pollution Prevention Certificate (IOPPC) renewal survey if the survey is completed on or after 8 September 2019, or if a renewal IOPP survey is completed on or after 8 September 2014 but prior to 8 September 2017. All ships – approximately 70,000 vessels worldwide – are expected to meet the D-2 standard by September 2024.

Postponing Refits

The implementation of the BWM Convention requirements has lead to two contradicting situations in the maritime market. Shipyards, on the one hand, have been outfitting newbuilds with ballast water management systems, or preparing them for installation, since well before the BWM treaty came into force one year ago.

Vessel owners and shipping companies find themselves in a different situation. While many ship owners have brought their IOPPs forward, others seem unaware of the upcoming September 2019 deadline. BWMS suppliers fear that shipping companies will try to install their treatment system at the last minute, causing a sudden rush in refit orders that shipyards, as well as suppliers, engineers and electricians, cannot cater for. It seems impossible for 70,000 vessels to all complete a BWMS installation before 2024. There are two main reasons for the delay in BWMS refits. The first one is financial: a ballast-water management system is a costly investment that does not have a return on investment. Besides, the recent crisis has left many vessel owners simply lacking sufficient resources. Many shipping companies also seem to think that prices for BWMS will go down, when the production scale increases – something suppliers and engineers strongly negate, due to the expected high demand as the deadline approaches. The second issue is the lack of available space. On a newbuild, a BWMS can simply be accounted for in the scope of supplies, and during the designing and engineering of the engine room. But on existing vessels, smaller ones in particular, available space is a rare commodity. The little space that may be available in the engine room is generally not located where you would want to install new equipment. Some ship owners do manage to find space in the engine room,

BALLAST WATER MANAGEMENT TREATMENT As of 8 September 2017, when the BWM treatment entered into force, existing vessels need to meet the ballast water treatment standard by the date of a specified renewal survey. Ship owners and –operators are looking for the most optimal “approved” system, which covers and fulfils the requirements for their charters. Wolfard & Wessels guides, advises and supports their clients in this matter. After choosing the most optimal system, a planning for budget, design, production and installation is determined. Wolfard & Wessels delivers this refit as a turnkey installation, in close cooperation with the client.

others opt for a separate cubicle on deck, or install one part of the system in the engine room and another in the accommodation area.

Ship-specific adaptations are best thought out during the initial engineering stage.

No Easy Task

Every vessel that transports ballast water needs a BWMS, but if you do not make an informed decision, the system you choose could be a bad investment. Of the three systems that are currently on the market, UV-treatment is the bestknown, especially because the same system is used in watermakers and evaporators. UV-treatment has one downside: its energyintensity – especially when sailing in murky waters. The alternatives in BWMS, electrolysis and electrocatalysis, are less well-known, but they are on the rise. These alternatives are hard to compare, as electrolysis requires salt to treat the water in order to create chlorine, while electrocatalysis, which works with hydroxyl radicals, needs barely any. electrocatalysis, has a further development, namely that the different components in the system can be installed both horizontally and vertically, and that they do not need to be in the same place.

Cooperation is Key

Reikon has installed Oceanguard (see frame on page 27), which works with electrocatalysis, on 62 newbuilds in the Netherlands. To date, Headway has received 1,412 orders for Oceanguard worldwide. Often when Reikon delivers a BWM system, Wolfard & Wessels is contracted for the engineering and installation, while Alewijnse takes care of the electrics. The added value of an electrical engineering company such as Alewijnse is their expertise in most operational vessels. They are familiar with a ship’s particulars, so they know the most effective cabling, routing and electrical engineering options, as well as the impact the installation of a BWMS has on power management and lead balance. Wolfard & Wessels, an international piping company that specialises in the engineering, production and outfitting of piping systems, often takes on a complete project. The company works with all types of BWMS and provides turn-key engineering, from the initial 3D scan of the vessel, to meticulous planning with all parties involved. The three companies have cooperated on countless projects for many years. Their most recent cooperation was the installation of BWMS on a series of newbuilds for Arklow Shipping. All three insist that, for the successful installation of a BWMS, proper planning and preparation is essential. Because the different parties involved often need to complete different tasks at the same place on board, coordinating the project in advance is vital. They stress that while BWMS installation on board newbuilds has become standard, the fact that IMO-certified system installation as

retrofits has still not come on stream could become a problem. They receive applications and sign framework agreements, but actual refit orders are few and far between. But where shipyards have gained experience with the different BWMS on the market, ship owners are often not as well-informed, and tend to underestimate

both the complexity of the refit and the costs.

Precision Planning

The 3D scan of the vessel is an important tool for everyone involved in the installation. It provides ample knowledge of routing, cabling, and accessibility. It enables

Headway Oceanguard reikon is the exclusive distributor for headway oceanguard in the netherlands. the oceanguard system uses electrocatalysis, also called advanced electrocatalysis oxidation process (aeop). It is a single-treatment system, meaning the ballast water – which can be sea water, brackish water or fresh water – is only treated during ballasting. When ballast mode is selected, the water first passes a 50 micron filter. after filtration, the ballast water goes through the eut. the eut uses aeop to kill all organisms that are left in the ballast water. during the electrocatalysis process, a large amount of hydroxyl radicals (oh¯) are formed. these hydroxyl radicals are negatively charged for a short amount of time. during that time, they react with (micro)organisms and destroy them. If the salinity of the ballast water is above 3ppm, a small amount of tro (chlorines) is also formed. the amount of tro is measured by the Monitor unit and is used by the BWMS to regulate the current for the eut. the normal tro value during operation will be between 1.8ppm and 2.2ppm. If the salinity of the water is lower, there will be less or no tro value, so the current to the eut will be higher to ensure enough radicals are formed to destroy all the organisms. While the ballast water is in the tank, the created tro value of 2.0ppm (on average) will go down to 0.1ppm in about 24 hours. When de-ballast mode is selected, the ballast water goes directly overboard and only the tro value will be measured. If the tro value exceeds 0.1 ppm, the neutralisation unit will start automatically and inject sodium thiosulfate pentahydrate to neutralise the tro.

the project engineers as well as the electrical engineer to plan everything in advance, from the foundations on which the cabinets will sit, to the routing of piping and the required lengths of cabling. after the 3d-scan, when the choice of system and the placement of its components on board are confirmed, the next step is detail engineering. electrical load balance and cooling requirements are calculated and the system design drawing and p&Ids are made and sent in for certification. the next step is system engineering. positioning the components and cabinets can be problematic, so it needs to be run by the supplier and electrical engineer. once everything is finalised and all parties agree, the production process can start. at the engineering company’s workshop facility, all materials are collected, numbered and labeled. When it comes to BWMS, each vessel needs a tailor-made solution in their choice of system, engineering and placement. for the process to run as smoothly as possible, shipspecific adaptations are best thought out during the initial engineering stage, so that once production and installation take place, everything has already been arranged. this prevents the vessel from being out of service for too long.

space explorers of our time, such as the Godmother of Viking Orion, the retired NASA astronaut Dr. Anna Lee Fisher. According to tradition, Dr. Fisher used a historic Viking broad-axe to cut the ribbon that allowed a bottle of Norwegian aquavit to break on the ship’s hull, and offered a blessing of good fortune and safe sailing. Viking Orion was also officially blessed by Monsignor Liberio Andreatta at the naming ceremony, and by Father Dino Cecconi, the Chaplain of the Port of Ancona, at her floatout ceremony in September 2017. After the naming ceremony, the ship continued her maiden season, sailing itineraries in the western and eastern Mediterranean before heading east to sail Viking’s newest itineraries in Asia, Australia and Alaska.

Scandinavian and Minimalistic Design On board Viking Orion, guests will find multiple accommodation options, several ‘al fresco’ dining possibilities, two pools – one of which is an infinity pool off the stern – and a spa with a sauna and snow grotto,

all in modern Scandinavian and minimalistic style. “We do not cram our ships with gimmicks and waterslides. Our ships are designed to simply enable our guests to better explore their destination,” Mr Hagen explains. However, in keeping with the profession of her Godmother and the inspiration behind the ship’s name, Viking Orion has introduced some extras during her travels throughout 2018, such as a planetarium-

style theatre, stargazing sessions and lectures by the first Viking Resident Astronomer, Howard Parkinan, a Fellow of the Royal Astronomical Society and founding member of the IOM Astronomical Society, featuring the ‘Exploration in Space’ collection, a photographic journal of vintage space photographs produced by NASA. i. www.fincantieri.com i. www.vikingcruises.co.uk

ast July, Offshore Heavy Transport awarded Liebherr-MCCtec Rostock a contract to deliver a heavy-lift crane for a new-generation, semi-submersible, offshore windfarm foundation-installation vessel. The HLC 150000 – from their latest crane series – is able to lift up to 3,000t. It has a robust design with slewing bearing and a lattice boom more than 70m long, and is equipped with several tugger winches and trolly hoists. The crane features a newly developed foldable A-frame, which makes passage under bridges possible and saves time. Huisman Equipment was appointed for the provision of the design and construction of two offshore mast cranes for Jumbo’s new DP2 heavy lift crane vessel, Stella Synergy, to be delivered in the first quarter of 2020. The main crane of Stella Synergy will feature a triple hoist, a 600mt Active Heave Compensation (AHC) auxiliary block with a depth rating of 3,000m, and a capacity of

lifting 2,500t. The second crane will be equipped with a man-riding whip hoist, an Active Heave Compensation main hoist with a depth rating of 3,000m, and the ability to lift 400t. MacGregor recently signed an order with Armada Rock Karunia (ARK) for a MacGregor heavy-duty crane, type K5036-HD which will be installed on their new floating-crane barge in Indonesia. With the recovery of the market, existing cranes are also being modified. One example is the boom extension of a BOS 45000 at Seafox 5. Together with Damen and Seafox, Liebherr has extended the boom by almost 20m and modified the crane with an optimised outreach of 96m in excess. Thanks to the modification, the vessel is ready to install the next generation of larger wind turbines, with mast heights of up to 78m. “The wind turbine market prompted us to

take the decision to enlarge the boom. This became necessary because of the height of the wind turbine towers, which is continuously increasing. Without this extension, we could not execute our current and future projects in the North Sea,” says Alexander Eijgenraam, Rigmanager of Seafox 5. “Depending on the future market, we might also look into more possibilities for our crane,” he continues. In addition, the sector itself is also changing. Thanks to new developments and technology, cranes and hoisting and lifting gear are getting bigger, stronger, lighter, safer and more stable. Heila for example, even broke the 1,000t barrier with the latest knuckle-boom telescopic crane in their HLRM series (more about this topic on page 62 of this magazine). MacGregor has introduced their fifthgeneration Pusnes bow-loading system (BLS). The BLS consists of two integrated units and a hose and hawser-handling system, and features greater hose connection capabilities, handheld wireless remote control and a wider operating scope. “The new-generation BLS system is capable of connecting the loading hose in wave heights up to HS 4.5m and at an entering angle of 110°. This is 50° more than our previous system,” says Stein Are Andersen, Sales Manager Offshore Loading Systems at MacGregor. TER has launched a new position limit switch, which is designed for controlling the movement of overhead travelling cranes, hoist and complex machine tools. The Arke position limit switch is specifically suitable in harsh operating conditions and features two fixing holes and alu rods. The switch is IP65, IP66, IP67-classified, with a dedicated M20 cable clamp and extreme temperature resistance, from -40°C to +80°C. At the beginning of this year, Huisman successfully load-tested a 3D-printed offshore crane hook with a safe working load (SWL) of 80mt, and now, together with RAMLAB, the company has initiated a project to produce an even larger offshore crane hook using 3D printing. The hook, which is based on a Huisman 4-prong hook design, will employ 3D printing benefits, allowing the product to be hollow, significantly saving on material usage and

production lead time. The hook will measure over 1m x 1m in outer dimensions and weigh close to 1,000kg, making it the world’s largest 3D-printed steel product in terms of weight. Its SWL will be 325t. Three leading classification societies, DNV GL, Bureau Veritas and ABS, also joined the project, which is unique. Maybe entire cranes will be printed in 3D in the future. Time will tell.

ctive in the electrical/mechatronics field, MSA-Service has been at the start and finish of several projects, including grippers, dredgers and cable trenchers, to name just a few. They work mostly in the offshore and dredging industry, but also offer instrumentations and automation solutions in other sectors. Since the founding of the company in 2006, Director Arie ‘t Hoen and his son, Technical Director Machiel ‘t Hoen, unburden their (inter)national clients by advising, designing, measuring, engineering and automating different kinds of solutions. Backed by the trust of a major international dredging and offshore contractor, they immediately had the opportunity of starting on their very first project: the hardware integration of an automation system of a cutter dredger. And they did not disappoint. Forwarding twelve-and-a-half years, their resumé now incorporates multiple big projects for major (inter)national companies: from a touch-down monitor that measures cable positions in tough waters to the mechanisation, presentation and automation of several monopile gripper frames and trenchformers for offshore wind installation vessels.

Automation and System Integration The monitor system VisuDredge is especially designed for the dredging and offshore industry.

Bachmann def.indd 35

Their most important service is automation and system integration. “It is kind of advanced technical Lego”, as Mr Machiel ‘t Hoen sees it. “Imagine a

machine, that, for example, needs to work underwater. This machine needs to be controlled and automated. We measure, design, engineer, instrument, present and automate this machine – a total package as they say – so it does exactly what it needs to do under water, while being controlled above water.” When designing and engineering the machines, it is important to collect all the necessary data. Therefore, MSAService measures every piece of data needed to create a total image – in 3D – of how a machine moves, how fast it moves and if everything will fit. They preform precise and reliable measurements under and above water. The monitoring software is then programmed in such a way that it can communicate with all kinds of instrumentation and present the data clearly. MSA-Service integrates the software in a control container, from which the machine can be monitored and controlled. For this, they prefer to use the programmable logic controller (plc) supplied by Bachmann. Two of the main reasons for this is that Bachmann’s hardware is certified, and they have short delivery times. But most of all, because, just like MSA-Service themselves, Bachmann likes to offer solutions. Since not all machines and requirements are the same, a custom-built solution is usually the most profitable. With their knowledge and expertise, MSA-Service can advise on this and design a complete solution to comply with all the technical needs. Thanks to Bachmann’s open

engineering platform, MSA-Service has the full flexibility they need to integrate different kinds of technologies, which is perfect for the wide range of projects they handle.

Instrumentation

To achieve these measurements, specific instrumentation is needed. MSA-Service assist in the design, manufacture and calibration of instrumentation for highquality land, marine and offshore installations, with a specialisation in

dredging and cable-laying instrumentation. But their software also works with existing instrumentation or that from other suppliers. With industrial Tomography Systems, MSAService has helped to develop a special kind of instrumentation: a non-radioactive concentration meter, nicknamed the ‘gamma-Buster’. With this density meter, the many problems that arise when using traditional radioactive meters can be avoided. MSA-Service developed the presentation and design. The meter has already been thoroughly tested and is usable in 99% of cases. Another specialty is the creation of modular housings, which can be adapted for different types of sensors. in order to make their instrumentation suitable for outboard and underwater applications, the housings can be made so that they are submersible. With their in-house-developed deepsea sensors, MSA-Service have even created a standard sensor which is able to measure a large variety of objects with just a few tweaks. They also have a standard range of submersible sensors available and can offer tailor-made solutions. next to instrumentation, they supply any necessary accessories as well. This means that MSA-Service can take the load off their clients for an entire project, from instrumentation and presentation to integration and automation.

When you work together, you think of even better solutions, which results in even greater performing machines. The Gamma-Buster is a unique, non-radioactive concentration meter.

Next Generation

With his father stepping down, Mr Machiel ‘t Hoen has taken over the reins. Asking him about his vision for the company, he answers, “I just want to make great things, together with our clients and team.” The keywords here are ‘working together’. His philosophy is that “when you work together, you think of even better solutions, which results in machines which perform even better. That’s why we like to be involved right from the beginning of a project.” Recently, the company moved to new premises with considerably more space. “Not necessarily to accommodate growth in numbers”, Mr Machiel ‘t Hoen explains, “but the bigger workspace allows us to simply position the machine in-house and engineer it from there”. Futhermore, Mr Machiel ‘t Hoen wants to keep the team spirit high, with everyone motivated to keep going the extra mile. “Usually, we ask the team if they are up for the challenge, and they always are,” Mr Arie ‘t Hoen adds; “this means you also take some risks, but so far, we have always delivered.” Looking to the future, he wants to focus even more on optimisation. “There is still a lot to win in logistics and standardisation,” Mr Machiel ‘t Hoen elaborates. With the roll-out of their new standard visualisation systems, MSA-Service is taking a big step in that direction.

solutions for our clients, but now we also offer a total package for the maritime and offshore industry.” VisuDredge is especially designed for the dredging and offshore industry, and is perfect not only for cranes and small inland (cutter) dredgers with depth indication only, but also for big hopper dredgers with up to fifteen screens and office connections. Among other things, the system monitors draught and positioning, and provides standard dredge-sensor data, such as discharge, vacuum and jet pump pressure. Using Bachmann’s plc and webbased Atvise Scada as a basis, VisuDredge is a modular system and therefore adjustable. Next to the standard options, it offers add-on modules, such as ton dry solids (TDS), ballast-tank monitoring (BTM) and system-

health monitoring (SHM). Dredging control, 3D presentation of the vessel and options such as calculating dredged volume, also belong to the range of possibilities. VisuDredge can also be used for dredging automation and is compatible with government systems, meaning that it can even be programmed to stop working in restricted areas, thus avoiding penalties. The other standard software, VisuDraught, is mostly the same, but designed in particular for vessels with specific loads, such as ferries and container vessels. The load monitor software includes DLM, alarms and system pages, with add-ons such as logging, BTM, SHM and fleet monitoring. i. www.msa-service.nl i. www.bachmann.info

Standard Visualisation Systems

Over the last eight years, MSA-Service has developed two standard visualisation systems: VisuDredge and VisuDraught. These modular dredging visualisation and control packages are a kind of a software template and make MSA-Service’s expertise accessible to more companies and markets. Mr Machiel ‘t Hoen points out, “Right from the beginning, we have offered complete

T

he 76,000DWT White Marlin came to DVR following the transport of two topside modules for the Johan Sverdrup riser platform from South Korea to the Norwegian sector of the North Sea. To enable the vessel to carry these structures, major modifications were made to her deck. The visit to Damen Verolme was to reverse these alterations and reinstate White Marlin for regular operations.

Major Works on Deck

In the space of 20 days, the yard had two significant tasks to complete. One of these was the removal of the eight grillages that were fitted to support the modules. Together these totalled around 5,000t of steelwork and had to be dismantled and removed from the deck before being sent for recycling.

Frank Berrens, Senior Project Manager at Boskalis.

The second element of the works was the installation of the two casings, one at each side of the stern of the vessel. The casings were lifted into position, and some adjustments were required before the casings could be welded according to the original design. When the welding work was completed, the integration of the casings’ piping and electrical systems with the ship’s infrastructure was carried out.

Floating Sheerleg Crane

With so much heavy lifting to be done, Boskalis brought in one of its own floating sheerleg cranes, the Taklift 4. Capable of lifting up to 2,200t, it handled the removal of the grillages and the installation of the casings with ease. The time allowed for the completion of all the works was originally

set for 20 days. However, despite working around the clock during that period, an additional five days were agreed with the client when it was discovered that the installation of the casings required more work than was expected. frank Berrens, project Manager at Boskalis, commented, “As a renowned company, Boskalis has a large portfolio of assets, such as the huge White Marlin, which have to be continually prepared and reinstated for new and challenging projects. To get that done professionally, we insist on strict compliance with stringent policies around the globe; likewise, therefore, for the great johan Sverdrup project. We were therefore very pleased that Damen had the right place and enough time available to perform the agreed works according to our specifications, and that the jobs were executed to the high standards set by Boskalis with regard to efficiency, time, quality and, always first and foremost, safety!” damen Shiprepair & Conversion has a longstanding relationship with Boskalis. This was the second time that White Marlin had visited DVR, and in late 2016 her sister ship, Blue Marlin, came to Damen Shiprepair vlissingen for a similar deck reconfiguration. Once again, close cooperation between the two teams, on this occasion led by the client’s Technical Superintendent and the yard’s project Coordinator, ensured rapid progress and the quick resolution of any unforeseen issues. i. www.damenshiprepair.com i. www.boskalis.com

ravenes was ordered in 2014 and built at the Sinopacific Shipbuilding Group Shanghai Ningbo shipyard in China. Most of the vessel’s components were ordered and delivered by Western European companies. Bravenes features the distinct X-Bow, which reduces impact and slamming and lowers acceleration levels. The vessel is designed for worldwide service. Her ICE-class 1A notation makes Bravenes suitable for work in arctic conditions and also allows for fast mobilisation to Asian waters in the summer period through the Northwest Passage. The SRI vessel has also been issued with a Green Passport and a Cleanship notation by Bureau Veritas. With this latest addition, Van Oord maintains its leading position in the SRI market. Their other vessels with flexible fallpipes have already proved to be highly efficient, and Bravenes, with a deadweight of 14,000t, a length of 154m, and a beam of 28m, takes that efficiency even further. The vessel is not merely equipped with a flexible fallpipe, but also with a movable tower.

New: Movable Fallpipe Tower The movable fallpipe tower is the latest innovation in SRI, and entirely designed in-house by Van Oord. This unique, automated storage and loading system allows Bravenes to operate safer and faster. It enables the vessel to perform three different types of rock installation at depths of up to 1,000m: through a fallpipe inserted through the moonpool, through a fallpipe over the side or through a tremie pipe over the side. No other vessel offers these three options, making Bravenes unique in the market. The standard configuration of the fallpipe through the moonpool is used for the usual pipeline protection, stabilisation, protection of pipeline and cable crossings, trench backfilling, buckling prevention, freespan correction, seabed preparation, scour protection and so on. But when a platform or other structure can only be approached from the side, the fallpipe tower is able to change position and extend itself beyond the side of the vessel. The third option, through the tremie pipe over the side, is perfect – and safe – for rock installation at very close

ship report other side takes over. As a result, the dP system holds the vessel perfectly in place and allows for safe installation close to a platform or other structure, avoiding collision, even with high waves and rough weather conditions. This stability doesn’t only apply to the vessel’s positioning capability. during installation, van Oord’s Remote Operating Vehicle (ROV) system is used, which enables precise positioning of the rock flow. furthermore, to prevent possible damage from lateral movement, the fallpipe is also equipped with a catching frame. Bravenes is also in a position to offer accurate dredging possibilities. Van Oord’s own innovative deep Excavation System (dES) can be attached to the fallpipe ROV, which allows very precise dredging at depth from 30m to 300m.

Bravenes can handle large rocks up to 500kg.

proximity to offshore platforms, wind turbines, deep-sea cables and powerlines up to a depth of 40m. The tremie pipe can be raised from its cradle and rotated to the necessary position over the side, aligning itself with the structure that needs to be protected.

Large Rocks, No Problem In addition to the above, Bravenes is also able to handle and install rocks with a wide range of dimensions. for this purpose, the vessel is equipped with plate feeders, the term given to steel-plated conveyor belts. When using the tremie pipe, the Bravenes is able to carry out the installation of large

rocks weighing up to 500kg with ease. This, in combination with the ability to load and install rocks at close proximity to the target, makes Bravenes ideal for the offshore wind and cable market.

Safe and Accurate Installation during subsea rock installation, safety and accuracy is of paramount importance. for that reason, Bravenes is equipped with dynamic positioning (dP) system 2 and 3, with four thrusters at the front and two at the rear. Also, all electrotechnical installations and drive systems have been double installed. This means that if the energy fails on one side of the system, the

The well-attended unveiling and christening of Bravenes on 21 may 2018 in Rotterdam marked the start of a two-day event celebrating Van Oord’s 150th anniversary. The new vessel was christened by yvon van Oord- Barbier, the wife of CEO Pieter van Oord, and is the third vessel to join Van Oord’s fleet of flexible fallpipe vessels. With their newest addition, Van Oord has strengthened their business even further within the offshore wind and cable sector. As maurits den Broeder, Van Oord’s managing director Offshore, says, “The Bravenes is equipped with the latest innovations to improve vessel safety and efficiency, for example, a fully automatic fallpipe loading and transport system. The Bravenes allows Van Oord to maintain its leading position in this market.” Bravenes will be used to stabilise and protect subsea pipelines, cables and other structures at depths of up to 1,000m. After the christening ceremony, the vessel set course for Norway, assisting with various offshore wind projects in the North Sea, protecting cables and installing scour protection for monopiles. The vessel is scheduled to be deployed on the Nord Stream 2 project from August 2018, carrying out pre-lay and post-lay subsea rock installation for 1,200km pipelines that stretch from Russia to Germany. i. www.vanoord.com

economic environment remains stable amid groWing global tensions

Robust Growth and Tough Competition With the first numbers and figures of 2018 coming in, it seems that the global shipbuilding industry has passed the low point of the economic cycle. compared to 2017, the volume of new orders received in cgt has doubled.

espite that significant improvement, new orders have by no means reached a high enough level to feed the global production capacity with an output nearly 75% higher than the new order volume last year. Consequently, the competitive environment is getting increasingly tougher. China, for example, is offering prices sometimes below material costs and attracting more and more orders in niche markets. in Korea, state-owned banks, which are currently following a series of restructuring measures and are often the majority owners of the shipyards, are once again financing loss-making projects.

furthermore, the Korean government has announced its intention to order 200 large cargo vessels despite over capacity in the market. Japan, having refrained from joining this subsidy race so far, has recorded another year of low order intake. the Japanese government is now considering filing a WTO-complaint against Korea.

European Shipbuilding Steers Clear

so far, the german and european shipbuilding industry has largely been able to steer clear of the global trend. according to vsm, the german shipbuilding and ocean

Industries Association, Europe‘s market share jumped temporarily from less than 10% to more than 50% based on order value, thanks to a healthy demand in specialised markets coinciding with the weakness of the large-volume markets. the market share of 35% in 2017 also remains an impressive figure. as expected, however, the orders received by german shipbuilders did not come close to the 2016 record by a wide margin. nevertheless, based on a robust orderbook, production at German shipyards has continued its positive trend. The German shipbuilding industry is harvesting the benefits of specialisation and its successful focus on high-tech niche markets is paying off. in the past, a withdrawal from the construction of standard cargo vessels forced shipyards to undergo painful adjustments and cuts in the workforce. the

number of ships built in germany dropped markedly and failed to provide a sufficient base for their vast domestic supply industry. Today‘s value chains are, on the other hand, much more complex and have helped the industry improve its total turnover and employment figures significantly. the weak global economy and the increasingly interventionist policies of key shipbuilding countries require new solutions. Effective global trade rules would help all stakeholders, since overcapacity and excessive price competition affect the entire value chain. This is aggravated by additional market distortions caused by expanding local content requirements and increasingly challenging economic conditions in target markets.

Growing Global Risks

Increasing protectionism, disrespect for intellectual property rights and cut-throat pricing are concrete threats. As a maritime nation, Germany could decide to close the ranks to strengthen its competitiveness. “The release of the Maritime Agenda 2025 last year was an important step, and the new coalition agreement between the governing parties offers a number of positive starting points. However, all stakeholders must be aware that merely continuing the status quo will no longer suffice to secure the industry‘s future,“ warns dr reinhard lüken, general manager at vsm. “financing issues, the development of the job market, rising social security

costs, excessive collective wage agreements and increasing bureaucracy are major challenges that weaken the german industry‘s competitiveness. We must pursue our innovation-offence unrelentingly. Furthermore, intensifying the efforts to improve cooperation throughout Europe would doubtlessly benefit the sector, as well,” Dr Lüken continues. “We can see great opportunities, provided that all stakeholders in the maritime industry come together and combine their forces. The current market distortions aggravate the overcapacities, also to the detriment of the shipping industry’s profitability, making the capital that is needed to invest in clean and safe technology scarce. this is why smart policies and decisive political action are so important,” emphasises dr lüken in closing. i. www.vsm.de

VSM the german shipbuilding and ocean industries Association (Verband für Schiffbau und meerestechnik, or vsm) represents the political and commercial interests of the German maritime industry and its complex value chains covering a great diversity of maritime market segments. This article is based on the press information of VSM’s annual general meeting in May 2018.

evel sensors also happen to be the foundation on which a fruitful cooperation has been built up between three companies. Damen shipyards group, Thermo Electric Instrumentation and Gems sensors & controls handle approximately 1,000 level sensors between them annually, all of which end up on the 150 or so vessels Damen makes per year. gems provides the sensors, Thermo Electric Instrumentation stores them and supplies them to Damen whenever needed. the three businesses form a complete supply chain which has been operationally sound for over 30 years. Needless to say, this type of cooperation is quite common. Most shipbuilders work with regular suppliers, and vice versa. But when a

cooperation between three companies is still going strong after 30 years, it means something: it means it works. shipBuilding industry met up with Dipl. ing. Marko Kania, territory Manager at gems sensors & controls, Marco van den Berg, sales engineer at thermo electric Instrumentation, and Siem Ketting, Supply chain Manager at Damen shipyards, at Damen shipyards gorinchem to discuss the ingredients a healthy supply chain needs to stand the test of time. Q: Let us go back 30 years. Where did your cooperation start? Marko Kania (Gems Sensors & Controls): gems sensors is a us company that has become more active on the European and

We can only achieve the high level that customers expect if we work together. We need each other to grow. Asian markets in recent years. Damen was already a customer long before gems took interest in the european market. Damen has been active worldwide for decades, and has a strong international reputation. Siem Ketting (Damen Shipyards): when i think of level switches, i think gems. i remember that when I first started at Damen, 30 years ago, there was a switch in a tank, and it was a gems switch. to me, it is a given that Damen uses gems. Q: What do you think makes this cooperation so successful? SK: Damen has some very strong organisational qualities. we build innovative vessels that are right for the market, and we have a very good sales organisation. but in order to be successful, there is a third precondition: a fast delivery time. In order to achieve a fast delivery time, you need professional, reliable suppliers, who provide the right product at the right time. without that added value, Damen would not be this successful. Q: How do you guarantee these short delivery times? MK: in the netherlands, gems works solely with thermo electric as their distributor. some 80% of our business in the netherlands is handled by te.

Marco van den Berg (Thermo Electric Instrumentation): thermo electric keeps gems sensors in permanent stock for Damen, to facilitate their standardised shipbuilding. Damen also keeps a small stock of gems products at their own site. Q: Has the way that Gems manufactures sensors changed much in the last 30 years? MK: A level sensor is a simple product that does not often need to be revised or innovated with the latest technology. it works and it has worked for many years. when customers are looking for a product

www.s h i p b u i l d i n g -industr y.eu

Gems.indd 51

that will work for the next 30 years, Gems can deliver. SK: It is simple. what matters is reliability. the product must work and it must be available at the time Damen needs it, at a realistic market price. If those boxes are ticked, it is the right product. I think the most important thing is that the product is suitable for the maritime market. Take gems’ ls-280 bilge level switch, for example. in the old days, a mechanical engineer had to go into the tank, every week, or month, to see if the level switch was functioning properly. Now, with just a small alteration, you can do a remote test with a test actuator from walking level. it is a small change, but it makes a big difference in user-friendliness.

Gems’ LS-280. Level sensors are the foundation on which the fruitful cooperation between Damen Shipyards Group, Thermo Electric Instrumentation and Gems Sensors & Controls has been built up.

Gems’ LS-270.

MK: these might be simple products, but the details are essential. The test actuator, the materials we use, the certificates and so on. Q: You mentioned that the product is reliable, that it has worked for 30 years. Can you tell us something about the service contract Gems works with? MvdB: mr Ketting, how many returns do we get from Damen on gems products?

SK: let me see. Zero, approximately. [laughs.] any questions? MK: we don’t need to provide service for level sensors. we can, but we don’t have to. the products work. MvdB: with level sensors, testing is like a light switch. it either works, or it doesn’t. when you are testing pressure, on the other hand, there could be a return every now and then, because those products are used in huge quantities – maybe ten thousand pieces.

Photo courtesy of Gems Levels & Sensors

Gems Sensors & Controls for 60 years, Gems Sensors & Controls has designed and manufactured a broad range of liquid level, flow and pressure sensors, switches, miniature solenoid valves, and preassembled fluidic systems. Gems is a division of fortive Corporation, a fortune 500 company with a global presence. to ensure rapid customer response, the company manufactures its products via three, fully equipped ISo-certified facilities located in North america, europe, and Asia, shipping over 4 million sensors annually. These facilities are further supported by a number of local sales, engineering and service offices.

MK: And it is far more detailed material. the flow needs to be exactly correct; there is the

possibility of overpressure. it is a more complicated product.

The first iconic Damen Pushy Cat 42, built in the early 1970’s, already had Gems level sensors on board.

Q: What differences do you see between the US shipbuilding market and the European market? MK: for us, the difference is in certification. all necessary certification for Gems’ products in the us was already available. if you want to grow on the european and Asian markets, you have to comply with local certification requirements, in order to guarantee that the products meet all possible demands worldwide. at the moment, additional certification is being sought on several Gems products to support the needs of both the european and Asian markets.

SK: last year, gems produced a new level switch, the ls-280. it is very similar to the previous product, but it was produced at a different Gems factory. Therefore, certificates were not immediately available. Damen could not use this updated switch until the certificates became available. once they did, Damen started using the ls-280. Certification is essential in the European shipbuilding market.

Q: Will this cooperation still stand 30 years from now? SK: in the coming years, our local yards will order more and more products directly from

our suppliers. we discuss what we need and where and when we need it with thermo electric, and they meet our requirements. MvdB: we have one warehouse, and that is in waddinxveen. that’s it, and that’s how we want to keep it. But when Damen needs us to ship to singapore, for example, we ship to singapore. we maintain good local contacts as well. thermo electric has a framework agreement with Damen, and we take it from there. when things change, we change the agreement. we keep it flexible. SK: The connection you have with a supplier is important. when you discuss purchasing, people tend to say: be objective. of course you must be objective, but only to a certain extent. when things change within a company, it is important to be able to discuss it with your supplier. Just like in personal relationships, there must be a good connection. we can only achieve the high level that customers expect if we work together. we need each other to grow. i. www.gemssensors.com i. www.damen.com i. www.te-instrumentation.com

ith a length of 75m and a maximum width of 16.4m, norderaue is designed to transport cars on more than 350 lane metres and trucks on 280 lane metres, as well as 1,138 passengers, to and from ferry ports.

the ferry was delivered by neptun Werft Gmbh on 19 april and has already been operating on the föhr-amrum-line, connecting the island ports of Wyk (föhr) and Wittdün (amrum) to the schleswigholstein mainland. norderaue adopted the name of a tidal system and fairway used by the ferries operating on the föhr-amrumline. the name was chosen following a suggestion contributed by members of the crew. numerous island inhabitants and tourists attended the ceremony in the inner

port of Wyk on föhr island where Wdr is headquartered. heike tholund, wife of the company’s nautical inspector/fleet operations manager, captain christ tholund, acted as Godmother. in comparison with the two sister vessels uthlande and schleswig-holstein, norderaue sports a slightly altered and optimised salon-deck arrangement, while toilet facilities have been relocated from the tween deck to sun deck level. interior staircases and a lift connect all passenger facilities and also make norderaue easily accessible for passengers with reduced mobility. in order to cope with growing cargo volumes, the design was tailored to enable efficient cargo transport. the car deck was re-designed to accommodate lorries on four,

rather than just three, parallel lanes and the ferry’s deadweight was increased to allow more trucks on board. In addition, the newbuild is designed and constructed in accordance with the strict RAL-UZ 141 standards for the renowned German Blauer Engel eco-label. “Due to the more advanced propulsion and larger capacity of Norderaue, this ship consumes about 25% less marine gasoil per transported car than her predecessor, the 1992-built Rungholt”, claims Axel Meynköhn, Managing Director of WDR.

The champagne bottle smashes against Norderaue’s hull.

Norderaue features four Caterpillar main engines diesel-mechanically driving four Voith propellers. These propellers make the newbuild efficient and eco-friendly. With an input power of 470kW in each propeller, the ferry can travel at a maximum speed of twelve knots, a speed that is rarely needed for scheduled services. These power reserves enable the operator to optimise fuel consumption and minimise emissions. They also compensate for delays and unfavourable weather conditions.

The vessel has a draught of just 1.908m, which is relatively low compared to the size of the vessel, and was achieved by making the blades of the VSPs slightly shorter than the standard version. As a result, the vessel can be manoeuvred with ease, even in the shallow waters of the ferry ports Dagebüll, Wyk and Wittdün. Furthermore, due to the symmetrical design of the vessel, time-consuming turning manoeuvres are unnecessary, which also reduces fuel consumption. Two of the proven drive systems are integrated on each end of the vessel, built at the Neptun shipyard in Rostock. These systems increase the vessel´s reliability, which is already especially high due to the ruggedness of the VSPs.

The inauguration of Norderaue marks the completion of WDR’s fleet-renewal on the Föhr-Amrum-Line, which commenced back in 2010 and brought, among many other advantages, the separation of vehicle traffic and passenger flows in the ports of call. Next year, a passenger catamaran operating at speeds of up to 16 knots is going to complement the fleet. This craft, which will carry up to 250 passengers in summer, is presently under construction in the Netherlands. i. www.faehre.de

hree remote-control models are now available, each comprising a transmitter and receiver. All three models – RC-X, RCS and RC-SP – can either be integrated in existing JDN solutions or directly combined with a new JDN hoist.

Space-Saving Design

One of the advantages of the new JDN receiver is its rigid and extremely compact design. All components are housed in a space-saving, shock-resistant GRP (glassreinforced plastic) casing, featuring protection class IP65 (dust and water protection). A breathable membrane guides any condensation away from the interior to the exterior. The design offers seawater

resistance for offshore applications. The radio remote-control model RC-X is even suitable for use in potentially explosive environments rated up to ATEX zone 2/22.

Easy Installation

Consideration has also been given to easeof-installation. Thanks to the standardised interface of the JDN RC, even existing JDN hoists and cranes can be retrofitted. The receiver can be mounted directly on the hoist or the trolley, or operated independently at the site. The compact design also makes it suitable for hoists with a low carrying capacity. Individual solutions to specific customer needs are available. The portable transmitters can be used for up to 20 hours before recharging is required. Perfect for covering long distances between hoist and operator, the JDN RC represents a sensible alternative to applications with long control hoses. In addition, it can be used in hard-to-reach places and for the simultaneous control of multiple hoists.

J D Neuhaus J D Neuhaus (JDN) is a manufacturer of pneumatic and hydraulic hoisting devices and crane systems. Their unique specialisation sets the benchmark for quality in their field. The company has over 200 employees worldwide with customers in 90 countries, and supplies a total of around 70 industries. JDN’s products are characterised by their ability to steadily and reliably move loads of up to 115t, even under extreme conditions. Production takes place exclusively at the JDN headquarter in Witten, germany. The wide range of products is complemented by services such as installation, inspection, maintenance, general overhaul of the systems and individual training schemes for customers. n their annacis Island shipyard, located undercover in a pair of huge leased warehouses on the fraser river, they built two tugs with pins for use in an articulated tug and barge application. the dedicated aTB vessels, named Island raider and Island regent, were designed for their owner’s tank barge routes between Vancouver, Vancouver Island and puget sound ports, all of which are in relatively sheltered waters. two existing barges were modified with the addition of pin ladders and stern extensions for connecting to the new tugs. the Vancouver-based naval architects of robert allan ltd did the design work for the tugs and the barge modifications, making extensive use of computational fluid dynamics (cfd).

Innovative Heavy Lifting

The warehouse on the fraser river has no launching facility and a railway track between the yard and the steep bank of the river, so launching the tugs took some innovative heavy lifting. At the yard, selfpropelled modular Transporters (spmTs)

were moved under the tug. They then rolled it over wooden beams laid overtop the railway tracks and on onto the 12,000dwt barge dynamic Beast moored in the river. The launch job was contracted to mammoet and Dynamic Heavy lift to roll on and lift off (ro-lo) the tugs. Both tugs were loaded onto dynamic’s 100 by 36.5m barge, which has a 900t manitowoc m-1200 ringer crane mounted on a 18m diameter ring as well as a 230t manitowoc 4100 crawler crane.

No Casual Task

lifting two 384t tugs, even with a 900t capacity crane is no casual task. The Dynamic Heavy lift crew put in a long day’s work preparing and setting the heavy cable straps according to a meticulously drawn diagram and set of specifications. these included a series of three heavy spreader bars, each at right angles to the one above, supporting four double slings that extended under the 384t tug’s hull at precisely determined positions, evenly dividing the weight. the crew had a final safety check and

procedural conference, during which a detailed check list was run through and a designated signal man was identified, who would talk to the crane operator.

All Clear

After a couple of final adjustments, the crane operator took up the slack and began the lift. the tug was lifted high enough to clear all equipment on the barge deck and finally over one end of the barge. the tug was steadied about 6m above the waters of Burrard Inlet, lashed down by heavy mooring lines, before beginning a stately descent. The built crew, who had been given the day off to watch their masterpiece meet the water, jumped aboard before all the weight came off the slings to make sure that all was as it should be below decks. finally, after the all clear was given, the boat was lowered to her marks. The vessel would be towed over to the owner’s dock where final details of her completion were dealt with prior to sea trials. If there was relief of stress on the part of the mammoet and Dynamic Heavy lift crew they didn’t show it.

with quiet professionalism they began getting the rigging ready for the lift of the second tug. when the second delicate but massive rolo operation was completed, the barge, with the two tugs on deck, was towed down the river and around to the port of Vancouver, Bc.

Specifications

The tugs, which measure 24.9m by 12.5m, have a molded depth of 3.65m at the lowest point on the amidships deck. a poop deck aft has flush removal hatches above the two rolls royce us105-p9 Z-drives. forward, a raised forecastle deck contains the port and starboard Articouple coupling pins, manufactured by Taisei engineering consultants. the engines, set well aft, are a pair of V-12, imo tier ii certified, cummins K38-m diesels each generating 850HP (634kw) continuous at 1,800rPm. the carbon fiber shafts pass through a bulkhead to the port and starboard Z-drive rooms. The rolls royce drives have 1,600m/m propellers in nozzles.

Right from the first development of the Heila telescopic knuckle boom crane, Heila has strived to build bigger and better cranes. Heila was the first to build many of the larger cranes of this type, culminating in the HLRM 1000-6S in 2018. The HLRM 1000-6S, a 70t foldable knuckle telescopic crane, is set to change the heavyduty crane market. It is equipped with a telescopic arm that can extend to a maximum radius of 30m; however, in store position, the crane only requires minimal space. This crane is able to lift 14,300kg at a reach of almost 30m and 52,500kg at 13.4m. Despite its small footprint, it is a highcapacity crane. In combination with various

he new flagship is part of MSC Cruises’ new Seaside-generation of smart ships. The vessel was delivered to MSC Cruises, the world’s largest, privately-owned, Swissbased cruise line and market leader in Europe and South America, at the Fincantieri shipyard in Monfalcone, Italy in the beginning of June 2018. During the delivery ceremony, Roberto Olivari, Fincantieri’s Shipyard Director, honoured tradition and handed over an ampoule to Pier Paolo Scala, Master of MSC Seaview, containing the first water that touched the hull when the ship was floated out last year.

Outdoor Design MSC Seaview has a gross tonnage of some 154,000t and is 323m long, making her the 16th-largest cruise ship in the world and,

together with her sister ship MSC Seaside, the biggest vessel ever built in Italy. She has a maximum capacity of 5,331 persons in total, with 2,066 passenger cabins on board. The overall design is based on a modern beach condo concept and features the cruise industry’s highest percentage of outdoor space per passenger. Since she is specifically intended to cruise in warmer climates, every element of the ship has been designed to provide enjoyment of the outdoors, the views and the sunshine; from cabins and suites with outdoor spaces such as terraces and balconies, and restaurants dedicated to eating and drinking in true Mediterranean ‘al fresco’ style, through to outdoor fitness areas and luxury spa cabanas in the open air. Another design feature of MSC Seaview is the 360° promenade with glass balustrades

Furthermore, the ship features various innovative environmental technologies, including electric propulsion, an exhaust-gas cleaning system, advanced waste-water treatment, systems for the prevention of oil discharge from machinery areas, a ballastwater treatment system, and an Environmental Management Plan. Thanks to these measures, the ship not only complies with the highest international standards, but has also received a Green Star 3 Design notation, the latest and most comprehensive edition of the RInA’s Green STAR additional class notations.

MSC Seaview is the second of the MSC Seaside-generation vessels.

Glittering Christening After the delivery ceremony, MSC Seaview departed from the shipyard on a three-day journey before arriving at her home port of Genoa. here the ship was officially christened during a star-studded ceremony in true MSC Style. The glittering ceremony combined live entertainment, speeches, a gala dinner and fireworks along with some important maritime traditions, which are treasured by this family company with its long-standing seafaring heritage. During the christening ceremony Italian screen legend Sophia Loren, Godmother to the entire MSC Cruises fleet, cut the ribbon to launch the bottle of champagne, christening the 13th MSC Cruises vessel in the time-honoured manner. The next day, on 10 June 2018, MSC Seaview commenced her inaugural summer season in the Mediterranean, offering six ports of embarkation: Genoa, Marseille and barcelona as well as naples, Messina and valetta. After the summer, MSC Seaview will follow the sun to the southern hemisphere for a winter season, with an itinerary including Santos, Ilha Grande, buzios, Porto belo and Camboriu. MSC Seaview is the third ship built under MSC Cruises’ EuR 11.6 billion investment plan, which has already seen the completion of MSC Seaside and MSC Meraviglia in november and May 2017 respectively. And more is yet to come, as Pierfrancesco vago, Executive Chairman of MSC Cruises, adds, “we are increasing capacity at record speeds.” The completion of their next ship, MSC bellissima, which is being built at STX France’s shipyard in Saint-nazaire, is a mere nine months away, after which another Meraviglia class ship will follow. i. www.fincantieri.com i. www.msccruises.com

he drive to make shipping greener is particularly pressing, following the IMO Marine Environmental Protection Committee (MEPC) meeting in April at which it agreed to adopt a strategy to “reduce the total annual GHG emissions by at least 50% by 2050 compared to 2008, while, at the same time, pursuing efforts towards phasing them out entirely.” The MEPC also ruled that the reporting of fuel oil consumption would become mandatory in 2019, and looked at amendments to international Ballast Water Management rules, the disposal of marine litter and biofouling guidelines. Further

discussions are set to take place at the MEPC’s next meeting in October. While the benefits of navigational, environmental and safety measures are clear, they create a logistical minefield for captains and crews who find themselves at risk from prosecution for infringements, whether intentional or not. When Kruger III docked at the Chinese port of ningbo, local maritime officers inspecting her garbage disposal log found that waste had been dumped in an area they thought was less than 3nm from shore, although the ship’s charts had shown it as 12nm from shore. The reason this violation occurred was because the baseline from which distance offshore was officially measured had not been made clear and is not shown on any ECdIs.

Clear Baselines

With ChartCo’s EnviroManager 5.4, it would have been obvious to the bridge crew that the discharge breached environmental regulations. EnviroManager has been designed to help avoid this type of situation, by clearly displaying distance from nearest land as measured from each country’s official baseline, as opposed to the shoreline on navigational charts. With contoured shading to show a ship’s distance from this baseline, crews can see at a glance whether discharges can or cannot

Regulations & CeRtifiCations be made at the vessel’s current position, or any point along its planned route. This means crews can plan to make sure they comply with a range of environmental regulations on garbage, food waste, sewage, bilge water, air emissions and ballast disposal. The system displays this information so comprehensively and clearly that many of the world’s largest shipping companies use EnviroManager, helping them to remain compliant with environmental regulations and avoid fines.

International Regulations Made Easy

Furthermore, keeping up-to-date with the rapidly changing international legislation and the large amount of documentation produced by different flag states is no easy task. Especially for companies whose fleet vessels are registered to many different countries. This was the case for ChartCo client stolt Tankers, which operates a fleet of chemical and bulk liquid tankers which are flagged to the Cayman Islands, Hong Kong (China), liberia, Panama, singapore and the united Kingdom. ChartCo’s regs4ships service has given the

firm easy access to all the flag state and international documentation it requires, such as sOlAs, MArPOl and various codes. “It has saved us a tremendous amount of time and has simplified an extremely complex process – distributing mandatory flag state and international information and documentation to all vessels”, a spokesperson for stolt Tankers explains. regs4ships has also helped unigas, which runs a fleet of lnG and lPG carriers, to operate more efficiently by enabling it to keep up-to-date with all the regulations and legislation required by the four flag states its ships are registered with. Hans Baijer, unigas vetting superintendent, said, “never before have I seen the tanker industry growing so fast on safety, security and quality than in the last decade. With all the maritime regulations and liability situations around today, it is becoming increasingly difficult for masters of vessels to remain 100% aware of everything. We started looking for a different kind of solution, which has now been provided by regs4ships.”

ike her sister ships, the 5150 dwAt bodewes trader, with yard number 730, is specifically designed for coastal transport through the short-sea trade routes of western europe. The versatile mini-bulker can carry a diverse range of bulk commodities – including cement, fertiliser and wood chips – and features a maximised cargo hold. the hold measures an uninterrupted 60m in length, is 12.4m wide and 8.68m high, and has a capacity of 6,258m3. the hatch deck is equipped with a coops & nieborg pontoon system, fitted with cement loading lids and includes two displaceable reinforced grain

bulkheads that can be placed in eight positions for cargo separation and storage. the hatch panels and grain bulkhead panels can be serviced by a gantry crane on coaming rails. because the vessel will operate in a part of europe with frequent strong winds, bodewes designed it specially to cope with severe weather conditions. The vessel features an optimised double hull that is characterised by a straight bow design with an almost vertical, slightly reclining stem profile, minimising drag and thus reducing fuel costs.

On 18 May, the vessel was successfully launched at Royal Bodewes’ shipyard in Hoogezand.

This generator produces enough power for the entire vessel, for all consumers, during normal sailing. for manoeuvring in the harbour, or for powering the hold ventilation, the vessel also features two 154kwe generator sets and an emergency 66kwe generator set. futhermore, Arklow Villa features an extensive ballast water treatment system, supplied by reikon. Exactly seven weeks after her launch at the hoogezand shipyard, royal bodewes delivered the mini-bulker to Arklow Shipping on 6 July. the vessel was christened at delfzijl. the godmother was Anita osmanovic from the chartering department of Arklow Shipping nederland bV. that same day, Arklow Villa set course for her maiden commercial voyage with a first stop in Porsgunn, Norway. i. www.royalbodewes.com

OUTFITTERS Ultrasound - The Silent Revolution

Jotun Launches SeaStock Management Solution

Marine growth causes ship owners a considerable amount of costs and labour every year. Hasytec Electronics has developed and refined an ultrasound system that can solve this problem. The system, Dynamic Biofilm Protection, is installed in ships without interfering with the machinery or equipment on board. The sound is transmitted from the control box through cables to the transducers that are fixed to the equipment or part of the ship where biofilm occurs. The control box ensures a steady and constant flow of controlled sequences of different frequencies to make sure that all micro organisms are destroyed, without any HASYTEC impact on any other marine life. New TMC Marine Compressor Range TMC Compressors of the Seas has developed and launched a new marine compressor range for use on board vessels operating in the global shipping, maritime and offshore markets. The crux of the new range is higher capacity output of control and service air, with lower energy consumption and service requirements and, as a result, lower operational expenses and harmful emissions into the air. Improvements are: better ventilation, optimised elcabinet, more accurate and effective cooling of the compressor, improved filters and a reduced number of hoses.

Upgraded Wärtsilä 20 Engine Attracts Multiple Orders Wärtsilä has received a series of notable orders for the upgraded version of its Wärtsilä 20 engine. A total of 33 engines have been ordered for merchant auxiliary power application in three major shipbuilding projects. In each case, the increased power output of the new Wärtsilä 20 engine and fuel flexibility were cited as major factors in the purchasing decision. On a power-to-weight ratio, the upgraded Wärtsilä 20 is rated as best in its class. Furthermore, the engine design allows for conversion to dualfuel operation. The opportunity for conversion at a later stage is seen as an attractive option for owners and operators when preparing for upcoming emissions legislation.
