EDITOR’S NOTE

Boat show season!

The long summer nights are drawing to a close, a new school term has begun, and cocktail invites are flying out the door. It can only mean one thing; boat show season is here. The month of September kicks off the yachting calendar with a flurry of Mediterranean meets. We preview the largest on the block – the Monaco Yacht Show – on page 8, followed by a preview of METSTRADE in Amsterdam on page 22.

We have three yacht reports for this issue, each incredible in their own right. Feadship’s 92m Drizzle (page 34) is the first Feadship to carry full Hybrid Electric Class notation and the largest yacht launched in the Netherlands to date. Commissioned by an experienced yachtsman and repeat Feadship owner, Drizzle’s exterior styling was the subject of meticulous owner requests, from the crisply chamfered contours to a more traditional flared bow.

On page 24, we report on Heesen’s 67m full custom delivery, Sparta. As the Dutch shipyard’s largest steel yacht to date, Sparta is described by Winch Design, which penned the yacht’s exterior and interior, as being “slender as a stiletto and looks ready to slice through the ocean at record speed.” And Lürssen’s third delivery of 2024, 82m Haven, known during construction as Project Cali, is born from a concept and exterior design developed in-house by Lürssen’s lead exterior designer, Jim Robert Sluijter (page 40).

Our Focus on Turkey takes us into the world of Bilgin Yachts on page 12, with the delivery of Eternal Spark, the first in Bilgin’s 50m series set to make its world debut at Monaco. We also go behind the scenes at Serenity Yachts (page 28) to find out more about the Antalya-based builder’s 50m Thanuja, which underwent a sizeable rebuild.

UK e-learning company VIRSEC tackles the issue of yacht fires head on with a new online American Bureau of Shipping (ABS) approved course on ‘Lithium-Ion Battery Safety Awareness for Superyachts’ (page 16), and Videoworks leads us into a world of onboard technology. Its MyInfo award-winning app for iPad, now in its third generation, provides full control over audio and visual content across Heesen’s newly delivered motor yacht Sparta (page 37).

Other publications by Yellow & Finch Publishers:

Finally, SuperYacht Industry went on the road with Deutsche Yachten, the working group of the German Boat and Shipbuilders’ Association, to learn more about the 65 companies that are its members. We profile five of them on page 18, from glassmakers and manufacturers of custom furlers, to fibre rope manufacturers.

All that’s left to say is we look forward to seeing you dockside at a boat show near you!

Eternal Spark, the latest semi-custom Bilgin 163 series.

Raising the game

Eternal Spark is the first in Bilgin’s 50m series.

With exterior design and naval architecture by Unique Yacht Design, and the interior penned by Hot Lab, Bilgin Yachts’ 50m Eternal Spark – due to make its world debut at the Monaco Yacht Show in 2024 – is the latest delivery from the Turkish shipyard’s semi-custom Bilgin 163 series and the first in its 50m series.

With a sleek, sporty and elegant exterior, Eternal Spark boasts six outdoor and three indoor socialising areas, including a vast beach club complemented by a sauna, a 21m sundeck with a large jacuzzi pool, and a spacious main deck aft. There is also an outdoor and indoor cinema, all of which provides a direct connection to sea without making the exterior design appear bulky.

Room to move

Built with over 200 different materials, the four-decked yacht has six cabins for

12 guests, 10 crew cabins, five bars, seven separate socialising areas and the ability to host over a 100 people for parties at anchor. The interior boasts top-notch features and detailed furniture beautifully manufactured in-house by Bilgin.

“The meticulously designed and crafted furniture elevates the yacht’s luxury and comfort,” says Bilgin’s senior project manager, Halil Uzunbabalar. “Our large living and entertainment areas on the open decks provide magnificent spaces where everyone can comfortably spend time independently and enjoy the sea. The combination of the beach club at the back with the swimming platform and sauna offers a spacious area for use while at anchor. And we achieved top-level quality in our technical areas by using the best materials and the latest technologies for the yacht’s performance and safety. to this project and our clients who trusted us.”

Wood inlays and embossed natural leather create a refined interior aesthetic. “The Bilgin 163 has a sober and minimalist style that is rich in specifics,” says Enrico Lumini, partner and head of design at Hot Lab. “The series follows the studio’s new philosophy ‘architecture for voyagers’ and focuses on cleanliness of architectural volumes and a renewed sense for a softness of lines. It is a perfect balance of shapes, soft colours and great richness of detail.”

Time outdoors

Conceived with charter in mind, Eternal Spark embodies a harmonious fusion of aesthetics and functionality. The yacht underwent numerous customisations, including an extension to her stern.

“Our design focus centres on creating expansive, sheltered open decks, as demonstrated by the 499 GT platforms,” says Emrecan Özgün, CEO of Unique Yacht Design.

Unique Yacht Design’s longstanding collaboration with Bilgin Yachts, in combination with feedback from previous owners, proved pivotal to the project. The main aim of the design was to enable guests to spend ample time outdoors, which was achieved by maximising the square footage and enhancing shaded and sheltered areas. This is a key element of both the new 163 and 170 series, as seen on Eternal Spark and her sisterships. As a result, the Bilgin 499 GT semi-custom projects now have some of the largest outdoor spaces available.

Powered by twin 1,450 CAT engines, the new Bilgin 163 boasts a top speed of approximately 17 knots with low operational costs.

Putting out fires

ABS approves VIRSEC’s fire prevention e-learning course.

The rise of fires aboard yachts is fast becoming an industry-wide point of concern. In 2024 so far, two significant fires made headlines when the 47m Heesen Atina sank following a fire that broke out while the yacht was anchored in the Gulf of Olbia in Sardinia, Italy, and an incident in the Zea Marina in Athens, Greece, that destroyed three yachts, including the 42.3m Libra Y – a classic motor yacht delivered by Picchiotti in 1977 and designed by Done Shead and Jon Bannenberg.

One of the leading causes of fires aboard yachts are lithium-ion batteries, which can be found in a growing number of popular water toys. In response, VIRSEC, the UK award-winning e-learning company, has launched an online American Bureau of Shipping (ABS) approved course on

‘Lithium-Ion Battery Safety Awareness for Superyachts’. Designed by industry-leading experts, the course addresses the urgent need for specialised training in the handling, charging, storing and fire safety of lithiumion batteries.

Safety awareness

Developed in collaboration with industry experts and Seascope France, the ABSapproved course is specifically tailored to educate yacht crew, officers, captains and managers in lithium-ion technology, covering preventive measures, fire prevention and emergency response. By adhering to safety standards and industry best practices, participants can demonstrate proactive risk management, potentially influencing insurance premiums favourably and mitigating impacts in claim situations.

One of the main requirements for battery safety awareness is down to the increased usage of lithium-ion batteries, which are widely used in various onboard applications, such as personal watercraft, hydrofoils, e-bikes, communication devices, and auxiliary power sources. Their high energy density and efficiency make them a preferred choice, but they also come with significant safety risks if not properly handled.

The problem has led to an escalating number of fires on board superyachts linked to lithium-ion batteries. These incidents can be catastrophic, leading to potential loss of life, severe property damage, and environmental hazards. Fires can result from improper charging, storage and handling, underscoring the need for comprehensive safety training.

ALL IMAGES COURTESY OF VIRSEC.
Fires breaking out on yachts is becoming a point of concern.

The course also addresses risk mitigation, by fostering a proactive safety culture that identifies and addresses potential hazards associated with lithium-ion batteries.

Compliance with international regulations

The International Safety Management (ISM) Code and the Standards of Training, Certification & Watchkeeping (STCW) Convention mandate that crew members be properly trained in the handling and safety procedures of hazardous materials, including lithium-ion batteries. The UK Maritime & Coastguard Agency (MCA) MGN 681 specifically highlights the need for competent individuals to conduct charging operations involving lithium-ion batteries.

Aside from safety, insurance underwriters may look favourably upon vessels whose crew have undergone certified safety training, potentially leading to lower premiums. In the event of an incident, having documented training and safety protocols can support insurance claims and mitigate financial losses.

Key benefits

Designed with safety first, the course prioritises the wellbeing of crew and vessel by instilling a deep understanding of lithium-ion technology and safety measures. It ensures that crew stay ahead of industry regulations and standards by ensuring they are knowledgeable in the safe usage and handling of lithium-ion batteries. It also increases operational efficiency, by equipping crew with the skills required to troubleshoot and resolve lithium-ion battery issues promptly, minimising downtime and optimising vessel performance.

The course also addresses risk mitigation, by fostering a proactive safety culture that identifies and addresses potential hazards associated with lithium-ion batteries. Customised to the superyacht industry, it is specific to maritime professionals who live and work aboard superyachts, providing practical insights and real-world

scenarios for impactful learning. VIRSEC’s e-learning solutions are internationally recognised for their quality, consistency, cost-effectiveness and time efficiency. Undertaken online, they provide a convenient, accessible and greener method for delivering training to crew and staff.

Hidden champions

DEUTSCHE YACHTEN: A FAMILY OF 65

As in many major yacht-building nations, there is a lobby organisation in Germany in that shipyards and suppliers have joined forces to represent their interests. Deutsche

Yachten is the name of the working group of the German Boat and Shipbuilders’ Association, which comprises 65 companies involved in the construction of yachts over 24m in length. This summer,

for the first time, some of them opened their doors for a press tour. Superyacht Industry profiles five that have fitted out numerous yachts built in the Netherlands.

Deutsche Yachten is the name of the working group of the German Boat and Shipbuilders’ Association, which comprises 65 companies involved in the construction of yachts over 24m in length.

Glass with 13 layers

One of the best-known companies internationally is Tilse GmbH with its production facility in Brandenburg. The company, which has around 45 employees, produces highly complex and curved windows for motor yachts from 50m and sailing yachts from 24m in length. Sheets of glass up to 6 x 3m are made in-house, while larger formats are handled together with partner companies.

Tilse only supplies chemically hardened and, above all, curved panes that are bonded with a resin and guaranteed for five years. Some examples, such as special glass for underwater lounges, have 13 layers. “We are not cheap, but when owners and shipyards realise how high quality our panes are, they no longer buy elsewhere,” says Henning von der Thüsen, managing director of Tilse. The fact that glass developments are trending in yachting is best observed at the yacht shows, adds Von der Thüsen. “Windows are becoming larger and larger – as floorto-ceiling as possible – as they keep out the heat and the outside world.”

Just outside Hamburg in Rellingen, Reckmann, a manufacturer best known for its custom furlers for large sailing

yachts (up to 120m), also receives many special requests. It’s portfolio has significantly grown over the years, and following the purchase of Sailtec almost 10 years ago, the company entered the motor yacht market. It supplies, among other things, awning systems, outdoor cinemas, awnings, sunshades and surrounds for sports courts on deck. Reckmann’s customers include Lürssen, Amels, Oceanco, Damen and Feadship. In the sailing yacht market, the references

with Baltic, Alloy and Abeking & Rasmussen are equally as impressive, though managing director Marcus Schuldt is not officially allowed to talk about the company’s largest delivery for a yacht that is very present in the media.

200 years of experience

Integral to any large sailing yacht is the need to be equipped with the right ropes. A specialist for this resides in the so-called ‘megayacht valley of Germany’ in BremenNorth. Gleistein’s roots lie in the manufacture of traditional ropes. The foundation for its development into a leading company in the cordage industry

lies in the founding of the company in 1824 by Captain Gleistein, who opened a simple cordage factory in Bremen Vegesack.

Over eight generations, this small factory has developed into a leading fibre rope manufacturer and global company whose core competence lies in state-of-the-art fibre rope solutions. Thanks to its comprehensive understanding, expertise and advanced production facilities, Gleistein offers a broad product range and serves a wide variety of market segments, from specialised lifting equipment and superyacht and commercial marine

equipment, to arboriculture and cable pulling applications. In 1980, the factory moved from the 400m-long Reeperbahn in Bremen-Vegelsack to Bremen-Blumenthal.

Over the years, as synthetic fibres continued to develop, thinner ropes with comparable strength came into being. When Gleistein returned to thick ropes in the 1990s, it could have been regarded as almost outdated. Yet ships and their equipment continued to grow, and the company secured an important unique selling point with its far-sighted decision to use braiding machines, especially in the maritime industry. Today, Gleistein produces cordage in the dimensions of yesteryear, only about 15 times as robust.

Just a few kilometres from Gleistein lies another Deutsche Yachten member. Multiplex is considered the world market leader in its niche for boarding and shading systems, as well as special solutions made of CFRP (plastic reinforced with carbon fibres). Based in its own building on the former Vulkan site, Multiplex caters to the needs of the superyacht segment. When the requirement for sun sails arose due to increasing UV radiation, Multiplex supplied custom solutions, with the 71m-long Skat built by Lürssen in 2001 as the first internal reference.

Other international orders include a fully integrated bridge made of carbon. The Middle Eastern owner requested a worldclass helm station installed on his yacht, which is modelled on the exterior of a classic dhow. While the bridge is a classic individual order, much larger quantities of the awning systems, gangways, helipad railings, bathing ladders and stairs are supplied – adapted to the respective yacht. Around 80 of the world’s 100 largest yachts have Multiplex equipment on board

From carriages to superyachts

The fifth company in the group, Mankiwicz, a Hamburg-based company producing paints under the Alexseal label, also lists 39 of the world’s 100 largest yachts with a Mankiwicz product on their hulls. The company, which now employs 1,500 people, made a name for itself at the turn of the century with the production and sale of high-quality carriage paints, which was, at the time, considered a hightech product for the early days of mobility.

The carriage wheel remains a defining element of the company logo today.

Originally founded by Hugo and Felix Mankiewicz, the Grau family took over the paint factory and began a success story that continues today under the leadership of Michael Grau, the third generation, with the fourth generation already active in the company. Alexseal, as a Mankiewicz brand, was gently launched in 2002, with the first products coming onto the market in 2004. Not an easy business, especially on large yachts, as Thomas Schultz, global sales manager for Alexseal, admits: “Large yachts have comparably huge but almost flat surfaces on the hull. This is an extreme challenge, even for professional painters. If the performance of the topcoat is not at 100%, you cannot achieve a mirror-like surface appearance.”

It’s fair to say that the aforementioned reference list of companies excelling in their trade shows that the Netherlands are steering a course for success.

SPARTA

A FULL CUSTOM HEESEN UNLIKE ANY OTHER

Technical specifications

Sparta is Heesen’s largest steel yacht to date.

ALL PHOTOS COURTESY OF HEESEN.

Sparta, a 67m steel full custom Heesen, certainly lives up to its name. Described by British studio Winch Design, which penned the yacht’s exterior and interior, as being “slender as a stiletto and looks ready to slice through the ocean at record speed,” it blends Dutch build and engineering quality with playful bespoke design. The brief was clear; to form a floating home for a fun-loving family who love to entertain.

Sporting a curvaceous reverse bow that tapers into a torpedo-sleek hull, Sparta is the distillation of Heesen’s sporty DNA. The exterior colour scheme accentuates her speedy look. Ice white livery is sharpened by red racing lines that widen into the reverse bow, augmenting her apparent length, while the hull is emblazoned by a thunderbolt of thermo bonded anthracite glass.

“Sparta was our first collaboration with Heesen, [who] are known for their low, sporty boats,” says James Russell, head of yacht exteriors at Winch. A key feature is the raised pilothouse on the sun deck, which allowed space to create a full owners’ deck. The yacht’s wave-like exterior is classic Winch, and the sheer line of the hull — underlit by powerful marine lights at night — is a central part of the silhouette. The sleek design remained unadulterated during the construction process.

Team work

The design, first known as Project Avanti, began as a collaborative proposal between Heesen and Winch in 2017. It meant the technical aspects were already >>

“Sparta is a dynamic boat that can be privatised or opened depending on the flow of guests,” says Russell.

The flexible ethos is central to the private owner’s foredeck. Privacy gates allow the owner to remain self-contained for an entire day. The sun deck, accessed by stairs from the owners’ deck, can be included in this private space. “The ability to ensure personal time or family together was integral to the design,” says Russell.

Seamless connection

Smart deck furniture graces every al fresco space, while the entire aft deck area can also be privatised for the owner’s use. It speaks to the level of customisation and the connection between the exterior and interior design. It’s perhaps best exemplified on the main deck, which provides a large indoor/outdoor space from the dining salon to the ocean with full length sliding windows leading to the open terrace aft deck. A 6.5m infinity pool, enveloped by loungers and a bar, tops the

area off. Twin stairs form an amphitheatre around the pool lead to a broad beach zone — sited just centimetres above the sea — from where a submerged staircase descends into the open water.

“The swimming pool is quite an indulgent use of space,” admits Russell. Its placement meant losing interior space below, “but I think that’s what this concept is all about. There’s a trend for informal living, so the beach pool lounge can become a barefoot alternative to the formal dining room.”

The yacht’s mini-me tender, which is stored behind the gullwing doors of the forward garage, is designed and built by Tenderworks.

Interior design language

The interior style brief for Sparta was to be serene and sophisticated, yet tailor-made for a sporty family who love to socialise. The interiors had to be elegant, yet practical. Open, yet rigid enough to withstand the rigours of a global cruising itinerary. Each zone is themed in rising elements of earth, water and air.

The marine-themed VIP cabins on the main deck feature can be separated by a panel wall that converts the space into one large bedroom. There is a tramazite installation above the beds with twinkling aqua blue stones and a wave-inspired carpet. The carpet features an island woven into its centre, allowing children to play Robinson Crusoe. “The owners wanted the yacht to be playful and to feature something people have never seen before,” says Julia Roestenberg, a senior interior designer at Winch Design.

The interior colour scheme is suffused by light timbers, bronze accents and almond golds. Every angle is rounded, while light bounces from every surface. The 65m2 lower deck spa is a central hub with natural materials and cool ceramics wrapped around a Turkish bath. A palm leaf inspired fully custom artwork insets the wellness area’s circular walls, filled with natural light.

Sight lines were lowered in the wellness area to encourage sociability. By sinking the circular wooden pool, bathers can converse with guests relaxing in the spa loungers, who can continue to chat to people in the gym, and so on.

On the upper deck, the master suite aft continues the air element theme, with sky blue shading, mother-of-pearl inlays and a custom carpet by Tai Ping. The private owners’ deck aft is accessed by sliding doors. By contrast, the 62m2 forward area is even more spacious with full length windows that filter the sunlight. It leads directly to the private owner’s deck where a vast Ottoman recliner is placed for stargazing. On the foredeck, an outdoor cinema brings movie magic.

Engineering expertise

The largest steel yacht ever built by Heesen – 1,200 gross tonnes – is an engineering marvel. She bears a uniquely wide body above her main deck, with no gang rails

alongside. Sparta touched 17.7 knots during her sea trials in 2023 and has a guaranteed range of 4,500 nautical miles at 12 knots. According to Heesen, that’s enough pace and range to outrun or outdistance almost any other yacht in her class.

“Sparta is a natural progression of our DNA,” says Peter van der Zanden, general manager of design and development at Heesen. “She is something special.”

Sparta’s sporty nature is enhanced by twin MTU M65R engines. Each one has twelve 4,000cc cylinders that offer unrestricted continuous operation.

New lease of life

50m Thanuja successfully completes sea trials after an extensive rebuild.

Originally built in 2011 by Concept Marine in Turkey and named Greyzone, the 50m Thanuja recently emerged from Serenity Yachts’ facilities in Antalya following an extensive rebuild. The huge overhaul included stripping down the vessel to bare metal, extending stern and aft decks and upgrading the flybridge. It also resulted in a huge increase in volume, from 380 GT to 440GT, and a substantial growth in length from 38m to 50m. Notably, the

classification society, along with all stakeholders, recognised this transformation as equivalent to a new build: a new superyacht holding a new name.

A comprehensive analysis of the existing superyacht during the early stage of the project prompted a decision to refit the 2009 Greyzone into a state-of-the-art 50m superyacht built by Serenity Yachts to North European standards. The technical

spaces underwent a complete reconstruction: a new engine room, new bow and stern thrusters, along with the installation of new pipes, cabling, engines, and generators. Crucially, the aluminium superstructure, including the flybridge roof, underwent meticulous re-welding, all of which resulted in an 8m extension.

Designing new

The Hamburg and Kiel-based yacht design and engineering firm, iYacht GmbH, was

responsible for the exterior design and naval architecture on the ambitious rebuild.

“Thanuja holds a special importance for our studio,” says Udo A. Hafner, CEO of iYacht GmbH. “Thanuja initially began as a simple refit but quickly evolved into a major conversion. Leveraging the many expertise of our studio we were able to support the owner and the yard in every phase. We are proud to have been an

integral part of this project, from the initial concept and exterior design to naval architecture.”

iYacht offered the full range of services, from initial sketch to CE marking. This holistic approach is particularly appreciated during refits and rebuild projects where starting from an existing vessel may bring to the table new unknown variables that are not easy forecastable before further examining the starting vessel.

Extensive refit

The starting point for Thanuja was to reverse-engineer the existing superyacht. This meant creating an accurate 3D model of Greyzone, combining state-of-the-art laser distance measuring with several methods. Getting this measurements and CAD models right were the foundation for reshaping the yacht’s bow. Just four weeks later, the first concepts were available.

iYacht’s proposed solution encompassed a new galley, a substantial overhaul of the foredeck, the addition of a jacuzzi on the

Sea trails.

flybridge, and an extension to the stern bathing platform. A large Z-lift was also implemented, which gave the opportunity to completely redesign the beach club –a key element in giving a 2009 vessel a modern aesthetic.

Interior changes

Internally, the superyacht underwent a transformation with the complete replacement of the teak decking, as well as the introduction of new interior and exterior furniture. This ambitious task was expertly executed by Katharina Raczek and her team. Working in collaboration with the shipyard’s interior fitters, they formed a task force that worked both as creative inventors and as problem solvers, addressing challenges arising from the interfaces between pre-existing areas and new construction. Thanuja comfortably accommodates 10 guests in five staterooms, and a crew of seven across six rooms.

A rebuild is inherently more intricate than new construction, as it introduces constraints in many fields: design, engineering and manufacturing. From a design point of view, the challenge is to find a delicate balance between the new and the old. Aesthetically, the changes must align harmoniously, respecting compatibility with the existing design.

From a technical standpoint, the challenges intensify further, as modifications and upgrades must consider pre-existing conditions, including materials, elements and old equipment. This necessitates a creative and innovative approach to both engineering and manufacturing.

Transformative action

When rebuilding a superyacht, the new vessel must comply with current regulatory standards, which have notably increased in safety, environmental, and operational regulations over the past decade.

Stefan Zucker, founder of yacht consultancy firm Zucker & Partner, played a crucial role in coordinating the project, helped by the owner’s appointment of an experienced project manager who was permanently present on site at the Turkish shipyard. The shipyard was specially

adapted and equipped for the project. Serenity mobilised 100 employees on the new build, while the interior focus was on a complete redesign.

The result is a yacht that meets the highquality standards of the superyacht industry in every field: from technical

installations and systems to structure and exterior/ interior design. The crew cabins have been expanded, and the superyacht received approval for commercial charter under the Luxembourg flag, marking a successful transformation.

FEADSHIP’S 92M HYBRID ELECTRIC IS THE LARGEST MOTOR YACHT LAUNCHED IN THE NETHERLANDS TO DATE

Drizzle is the first Feadship to carry full Hybrid Electric Class notation.

ALL PHOTOS COURTESY OF FEADSHIP.

Jointly designed by Sinot Yacht Design and the owner’s personal design office, underpinned by naval architecture by De Voogt, Drizzle (Project 1012) is a longawaited yacht. The 92m, which delivered in July 2024 following successful sea trials in June, is not only a highly customised new build, but it is the first Feadship to carry full Hybrid Electric Class notation.

Commissioned by an experienced yachtsman and repeat Feadship owner, Drizzle’s exterior styling was the subject of

meticulous owner requests, from the crisply chamfered contours to a more traditional flared bow which lends the yacht a modern-classic appeal. The sundeck serves as an observation vantage point with a forward-facing sofa and sun loungers, while the aft deck is used for storing two rescue tenders.

The owner also mandated a spacious beach club in the stern with a fixed stern platform and two fold-down side platforms to create a whopping 165m2 of water-level lounging space. In fact, the beach club occupies an entire quarter of the length of the lower deck. Despite the yacht’s considerable volume (2,965GT), the interior offers cosy spaces for family use.

Natural materials and finishes are used throughout the yacht. Comfortable guest suites and staff cabins finished to luxury standard are on the main deck forward, while the master stateroom, family lounge and wellness area are situated on the upper decks.

Packing propulsion

Between the engine room and the beach club is a side-loading garage with room for two 10m tenders, a ski boat and various water toys. Forward is the galley, crew mess and crew accommodation. The stern platform has direct access via sweeping staircases on either side to the main deck aft where a large pool and open-air lounge are shaded by the deckhead overhang.

But it’s the propulsion plant and onboard energy management incorporating stateof-the-art Feadship technology that piques interest. Drizzle carries full Hybrid Electric Class notation and comprises two main engines and shaft-driven fixed pitch propellers, coupled with PTO/PTI electric motors of 560kW each and 1MW of Li-ion batteries. In addition to conventional diesel propulsion mode, the e-motors work as shaft generators to produce electricity to serve the hotel loads or recharge the battery bank, as well as for low-speed navigation while the generators or batteries generate the required electrical power.

efficiency, diesel-electric which underwent sea trial in July.

Five years in the making, innovationpacked Project 821 is designed by British studio RWD. With five decks above the waterline and two below, it is the largest motor yacht ever launched in the Netherlands. The yacht also has the most hull openings of any Feadship, including 14 balconies that slide out from the ‘tweendeck space, five large shell doors, and seven opening platforms, all of which create an impressive connection to the sea.

“Working with the experienced owner, designers and owner’s team has been a professional Pleasure,” says Albert Abma, Feadship project manager. “Gathering the operational experience of the owner’s team with the yard’s building experience has resulted in this modern-classic, state-ofthe-art and full custom Feadship.”

Project 821

Drizzle’s delivery came hot on the heels of two previous Feadship launches this year, the mighty 118.8m Project 821, the world’s first hydrogen fuel-cell superyacht rumoured to be commissioned by Bill Gates, and 60m Project 713, a high-

The aim of the yacht is to cruise between harbours or anchorages and to operate the yacht’s hotel load and amenities with emission-free power from green hydrogen. Its 100m-plus-size made it a good candidate to explore pure green hydrogen as the fuelcell source. That said, even a yacht the size of Project 821 cannot carry enough liquid hydrogen to power a transatlantic crossing.

“The value of the research as well the development of class and flag safety regulations for an entirely new type of energy generation is an advancement we are proud to have made available to all,” says Jan-Bart Verkuyl, Feadship Director and CEO of Royal Van Lent Shipyard. Next year, two long-route Norwegian passenger

and car ferries will enter service using the system pioneered with PowerCell Group for Project 821.

Cryogenic fuel tank

The hydrogen propulsion requires a cryogenic fuel tank that holds 92m3 (4 tonnes) of hydrogen, 16 compact fuel cells, their switchboard connection to the DC electrical grid, and the vent stacks for the escaping water vapour, all of which added 4m to the yacht’s original specification length. Importantly, the fuel cells can also use easier-to-store methanol,

a liquid fuel in ambient conditions. Steam reforms methanol into hydrogen before the electrochemical reaction in the fuel cell.

Supplying electrical power via nonpolluting hydrogen fuel cells has a swift and significant impact. For longer travels or when pure hydrogen is not available, the electricity powering the 3,200kW ABB pod drives comes from MTU generators combusting HVO, a second-generation biofuel that reduces harmful emissions by 90%. The validity of powering the yacht’s

generators with HVO was tested and proven on the 2023 Feadship, Obsidian.

Project 821 also features the most efficient waste heat recovery system yet developed, a system heating everything from the pool, jacuzzi and steam room to the ambient air temperature and towel bars and floors in the guest bathrooms. Further savings in the hotel load will come from a Smart AC system linking sensors to an energy management system that automatically reduces air conditioning or heating in unoccupied guest spaces

“We have now shown that cryogenic storage of liquified hydrogen in the interior of a superyacht is a viable solution,” says Verkuyl. “Future innovations on fuel cells and onboard reforming of methanol to hydrogen are on the near horizon. For Feadship, the bottom line is that the decarbonisation of Feadship’s upstream process, such as our extensive use of aluminium produced in a more environmentally sensitive way and the production of net-zero carbon-free fuels or hydrogen carriers, deserves utmost priority.”

Project 713

With her elegant blue-grey hull and white superstructure, Project 713 represents yet another progressive step towards Feadship’s goal of being climate neutral by 2030. The yacht is the first Feadship to carry solar cells for auxiliary power generation, alongside being fitted with diesel-electric propulsion and the ability to run on non-fossil HVO.

The hull form is optimised for cruising speed instead of top speed, and the solar panels – producing up to 24MWh annually – are designed for optimal performance and durability. The yacht is also fitted with a high-efficiency, diesel-electric power system. Energy for both propulsion as well as the hotel load is supplied by four generators and a 400kWh battery.

Project 713 is the first new-build Feadship to feature FSC-certified plantation teak for all the decking and has undergone a Yacht Environmental Transparency Index (YETI) Assessment report, which looks at the complete life cycle of a yacht. Project 713 measures at 35% below average impact, an important requirement from the owner who has been instrumental in the design and environmental impact reduction.

Videoworks brings customised technology to Heesen’s 67m Sparta.

Technology expert, Videoworks, is often on the bleeding edge of new marine systems. Every Videoworks system is as different as the yachts on which they are installed, and the complete audio-visual and IT package supplied for Heesen Yacht’s newly delivered 67m custom-built yacht Sparta is no different.

The yacht design, first known as Project Avanti, began as a collaborative proposal

between Heesen and Winch in 2017. It meant the technical aspects for the largest steel yacht ever built by Heesen – 1,200 gross tonnes – were already appraised and engineered before the project was acquired by her owner. But there was still room for customisation, and Sparta’s equipment bears the strong stamp of the boat’s build owner. Videoworks stepped into the frame in 2021.

Interior interface

MyInfo is Videoworks’ award-winning app for iPad, now in its third generation, and provides full control over audio and visual content across Sparta. The graphical user interface, which had to complement the exceptional interior, is fully designed for elegant and harmonious family living. The yacht interior’s strong use of colour and natural themes found a reflection in the MyInfo app.

“We built the system in a way that we can distribute audio and video centrally from a single point, using our own proprietary standards.”

Stefan Nieuwenhuys – general manager of Videoworks.

“This project demanded a highly customised graphical user interface, featuring some very specific icons and functions to match the way the build owner wanted to use the systems,” says Stefan Nieuwenhuys, general manager of Videoworks Europe BV. “We have a complete IT team in-house who did all the programming and design work to deliver that vision.”

From the inside out

The equipment is high-end for a yacht of Sparta’s size, and a first for Heesen. A big, centralised AV rack on the tank deck contains media servers and storage that can deliver audio and video content to any of the outlets across the boat – from cabins to social areas inside and out. Speakers and subwoofers in each zone provide quality surround sound, and the pick of the many screens measures a generous 75 inches, flush fitted in the main saloon.

“We built the system in a way that we can distribute audio and video centrally from a single point, using our own proprietary standards,” continues Nieuwenhuys. “This makes the set-up future-proof, because it allows us to swap over to high-speed internet streaming services without replacing equipment all over the yacht. The upgrade is all prepared, even down to the cable connecting to the Starlink antenna.”

Building longevity

The initial contact between Videoworks and Heesen began in 2021. The synergy between the Dutch shipyard’s quality build techniques and Videoworks’ range of equipment on offer has led to a further two Heesen yachts in build with Videoworks systems on board, and another three at the proposal stage.

“Quality and innovation are the watchwords for our brand, and we have found that Heesen fully shares these values,” says Nieuwenhuys. “We are delighted to welcome Heesen as a valued customer and look forward to deepening our partnership in the future.”

From light and temperature to presence sensors and energy metres, Videoworks’ smart automation systems go far beyond entertainment, pushing deep into the realm of a full custom build.

“It has been a pleasure to collaborate with Videoworks on the Sparta project,” says Heesen’s Piet van der Linden. “The team has been extraordinarily responsive over some quite demanding custom features, and communication has been excellent. We are a busy yard with many custom and semicustom yachts at various stages of build, and we look forward to working with Videoworks on more of these in the future.”

LÜRSSEN’S THIRD DELIVERY OF THE YEAR

ALL PHOTOS COURTESY OF LÜRSSEN.

Haven feels very different from many other yachts; she has a practical and functional design that places great emphasis on outdoor living.

Haven’s in-house exterior design signals point of strength for Lürssen

Germany shipyard Lürssen delivered its third new build of 2024 in June, following 122m Kismet and 138.8m Luminance earlier in the year. The 82m Haven, known during construction as Project Cali, set sail from the Bremen facilities to embark on her maiden voyage down the Kiel Canal and onwards to Gibraltar.

The concept and exterior design of Haven was developed in-house by Lürssen’s lead exterior designer Jim Robert Sluijter. The yacht features a low profile with long, elegant, feminine lines that sweep from bow to stern, lending her a touch of majestic athleticism. Key to her design are sinuous concave patterns that run across her superstructure. When the sun is in the right position, they reflect the movement of the waves.

The 82m Haven, known during construction as Project Cali.

“The owner fell in love with the first outline of the project, and as a result, Haven has barely changed from the original sketch,” says Sluijter. “Haven feels very different from many other yachts; she has a practical and functional design that places great emphasis on outdoor living. Thanks to an interplay of light and glazing, all interior spaces are well connected with the outdoors.”

Interior delights

Haven’s sleek exterior is balanced by a contemporary interior, created by the British studio RWD. The choice of materials is natural and pure, while the design itself features asymmetrical shapes and a dynamic layout. Striking artworks draw the eye with their bold and energetic vibrancy around every corner.

“Our team went on a journey with the owners and their family to create a distinct design vocabulary, with subtly crafted

details that create a playful and timeless interior,” says Mattia Mazzucchi, head of interiors at RWD. “Through the combination of curated pieces and custom designs, every inch of the yacht is beautiful, personal and functional.”

Point of collaboration

Haven’s 82m length places her among the world’s largest tri-deck superyachts afloat today. She was built for an experienced owner with an active lifestyle and a clear vision for their vessel: generous outdoor space, a family-oriented layout, and storage for water toys and diving gear.

Highlights include a 300sqm sun deck with a 2.5m ceiling height and moveable windbreak panels. A generous beach club on the lower deck has single-step sea terraces and a seamless connection to the sea.

“Kees de Keizer and his team, who oversaw the build on behalf of the owner, and RWD

were exceptional partners throughout the construction of Haven, and the relationships they forged with our employees are incredibly robust,” says Peter Lürssen, managing director of Lürssen shipyard. “I would like to extend my gratitude to everyone involved in the build; the results testify to their upstanding communications and commitment to the project.”

While Lürssen will always collaborate with the world’s leading design houses, having an in-house team is an additional value-added offering. Haven underscores the German yard’s commitment to placing its owners first and highlights its versatility as a custom superyacht builder. Lürssen has seven yachts currently under construction, including the 142m Project Ali Baba.
