The yacht’s multiple exterior areas, including a water-level swim platform and a private folding balcony in the owner’s suite, provides efortless freedom for those on board. Two luxury tenders can be stowed out of sight on the foredeck thanks to a smart, discreet storage solution, while a cosy beach club contains a sauna, steam shower, comfortable seating and storage for water toys.

The timeless exterior design, defned by signature Amels 60 geometric windows, has helped drive owners’ appetite, says Rob Luijendijk, director of sales at Damen Yachting. “[Khalida’s] striking design, future-proof package and proven capability are just some of the outstanding qualities of the Amels 60,” he says. “To see so many of these yachts with their owners in such a short space of time is incredible.”

Building on success

According to the Dutch shipyard, the innovative build process is largely what has made the Amels Limited Editions such

an appealing proposition within the current new-build market. Providing owners with a fast delivery that is based on a proven platform and features tried and tested naval architecture and seakeeping characteristics is an alluring package. It’s also ftted with the most advanced hybrid propulsion system supplied by Amels to date, which not only reduces fuel consumption and exhaust emissions but also protects the lifespan of the generators and the main engines. In addition, vibration and noise are greatly reduced.

“This proven hybrid system currently ofers the best solution to reduce harmful emissions, reduce noise and vibrations while benefting from lower fuel and maintenance costs,” says Joppe Osté, project manager at Damen Yachting. “It also allows owners to cruise up to a certain speed solely on the generators, without using the main engines.”

Nick Flashman, owner’s representative and director and founder of Deeside Maritime, which has been appointed Khalida’s operational management, highlights Damen Yachting’s expertise as a key factor of the owner’s satisfaction with the build. “I have worked on a number of Amels new builds over the years and have great experience of working with the Damen

Yachting team and their fantastic technical build platform and operational performance,” he says. “It was this experience and knowledge that the owner and family ofce were looking for when appointing someone to not only oversee the crucial fnal stages of the build but to take the operational management of the yacht forward beyond delivery.”

The fourth Amels 60 is currently in build with delivery scheduled for spring 2024, with hulls fve and six already under construction.

Azimut | Benetti keeps pole position

The Italian shipyard powers ahead with forward-thinking design and sustainable solutions for its growing portfolio of yachts.

OF AZIMUT | BENETTI.

Last year proved to be another stellar year for Azimut | Benetti. According to the Global Order Book edited by Boat International, the Group retained its position as the leading manufacturer of yachts over 24m for the 24th year in a row. The rating accounts for both the number of units under construction – 167 yachts –and the cumulative length of projects built – a total of 6,014m. The Group’s portfolio of 45 yachts accounts for the widest range of models on the market,

Azimut | Benetti’s published fnancial fgures corroborate the results. The company reported a 23% growth in production value for 2023, with its Earnings Before Interest, Taxes, Depreciation and Amortisation (EBITDA) growing by 50%. The Group’s production value has nearly doubled in the past fve years, increasing from EUR 700 million to EUR 1.3 billion.

Azimut | Benetti puts its continued success down to its focus on fuel consumption and environmental impact. The stylistic and technological popularity of its portfolio, with innovative design features like the Oasis Deck, a new take on the beach club area, is another contributing factor, while its heritage status as a private family company under the stewardship of the Vitellis continues to bolster its reputation.

Research and development

The Group’s focus on reducing the environmental impact of its yachts –including the use of HVO biofuel, ofering almost its entire range with hybrid systems and developing solutions like the ZeroEmission Hotel Mode powered by fuel cells and advanced power management systems – has seen it make great strides in lowering CO2 emissions. In 2023, the Group signed an agreement with Eni Live to replace all fossil fuels used by the Group for sea trials, tests and prototype transfers with HVO biodiesel made from renewable raw materials that can allow for a reduction in CO2 emissions by up to 90%. The agreement will see the Group purchase approximately 700,000l of HVO from 2024

The Benetti B.Yond is already recognised as the greenest model in its category, achieving a signifcant reduction in CO2 >>

One of the most infuential contemporary stylistic innovations introduced by Benetti is the Oasis Deck, which turns the aft deck into a sea terrace in close contact with nature.

emissions (up to 24%) and NOx emissions (up to 85%). The Group’s production sites will use renewable sources to cover approximately 50% of energy requirements by 2026.

The next objective is to further optimise consumption and emissions generated by onboard systems, largely air conditioning energy consumption, which is particularly relevant to larger boats that spend around 90% of their time at anchor.

The Group is also actively promoting the development of a public index to measure yacht efciency. Together with Lloyd’s Register, Azimut conducted a consumption and emissions certifcation plan in the summer of 2023. It led to the Carbon Emission Index, which the Superyacht Eco Association used to extend the SEA Index to yachts under 24m, the most widespread category involving the greatest number of owners.

Sustainable design

Another string to Azimut | Benetti’s sustainability bow is its focus on sustainable design, exemplifed by the spring 2024 launch of the Seadeck, the Group’s frst hybrid series and most efcient build to date. The Group’s solutions to reduce emissions include integrating high-efciency hulls and the extensive use of carbo and innovative propulsion systems. Today, over half of Azimut’s feet is made up of Low Emission Yachts, which guarantee a reduction in emissions of up to 30%.

Reft is another area of focus.

A EUR 15 million investment to expand the Lusben shipyard in Livorno – one of three reft facilities alongside Varazze and Viareggio – to be able to host yachts over 100m is anticipated to solidify its position as one of three key superyacht reft players in the Mediterranean.

Grassroots development

Plans are afoot for Yachtique, the Group’s internal styling lounge created over 20 years ago, to expand its facilities in Tuscany over the next three years. The Group is also committed to supporting its 2,400 direct employees in their professional growth and training. The Azimut | Benetti Group Corporate Academy comprises the Shipyard Academy, which provides 144,000 hours of training per year, the Executive Academy and Edu & Career Guidance projects in collaboration with universities, schools and technical institutes.

“The internal nautical module, involving employees in a cruising experience on the Group’s yachts, brings the Group’s mission to life by making people experience, know and love the product: to build the most beautiful, reliable, technological and innovative yacht and assist it always and everywhere,” wrote the Group in a statement.

Harnessing the power of green technology

Hundested Propeller looks at how the right propulsion equipment can reduce human impact on the environment

COURTESY OF HUNDESTED PROPELLER UNLESS MENTIONED OTHERWISE.

Propulsion equipment could be considered one of the most polluting and highest fuel consuming elements of a superyacht, from propellers and shafs to gearboxes and sail drive units. Yet the right equipment provides the opportunity to be more efcient, use less fossil fuels and generate power to use on

Over the past two decades, signifcant developments have been made to help increase efciencies and make equipment more fexible and greener.

“It’s important to look at a project as a sum of parts because things rarely work in isolation,” says Rune Graesdal

Zilcken, sales manager at Hundested Propeller.

Since 1921 Hundested Propeller has evolved from marine engines, to propellers, gear boxes and sail drive units. “The superyacht sector is a driving force for new technology,” adds Graesdal Zilcken. “Over the past 10 years Hundested Propeller’s focus has been on hybrid propulsion and regeneration, and we are starting to see this being used in commercial sail cargo boats like TOWT.”

The Equipment for Regeneration

“It is ofen believed that a higher propeller speed will generate more output,” says Graesdal Zilcken. “If you follow this logic, then you would run with a smaller pitch

than the design pitch – and that is not true. A higher shaf speed generates more heat in the gear due to the gears spinning faster. A higher propeller speed generates more noise due to propeller cavitation.”

The following is an example of power regeneration on a superyacht. When there was load on the propeller under 12 knots the propeller ofen stalled and there was heavy vibration in the stern of the boat when regenerating, enough to make the rails on the deck rattle. The gearboxes overheated when running fast and the regeneration output was low. The outcome was far from satisfactory.

By introducing controllable pitch propellers and a pitch control unit, the engineers could adjust the pitch to 20% less than the feathering position. By changing the pitch, the outcome was completely diferent. The overheating disappeared due to lower shaf RPM. The propeller could regenerate starting from 8 knots, and the noise disappeared. In this instance, the Hundested Propeller equipment managed to regenerate 240kW at 14 knots.

Controllable Pitch Propellers

This isn’t new technology. Controllable Pitch Propellers (CPP) have been used in the marine industry since the early 1930s. They enable a captain to fully use the engine power irrespective of the current boat operation. CPP ofer several advantages: They give maximum power and RPM at both low and high vessel speed by adjusting to the optimum pitch without overloading the engine; they ofer unmatched manoeuvring capabilities as thrust can be changed between astern and ahead in seconds just by adjusting the pitch, while keeping the engine at full RPM; and they minimise noise from engine and propeller with an optimum combination of pitch setting and RPM.

Other technologies

Pitch Control Unit’s (PCU) are a vital part of the power generation and hybrid propulsion puzzle and give full control of the angle of the propeller blade. It’s advisable to look for diferent versions, for example electro-hydraulic models ofer low energy consumption with the removal of constantly running hydraulic pumps and motors.

Hundested Propeller hybrid gear box.
Hundested Propeller FR-ELH with feathering CPP.

A fexible gear box is the brain of the operation and helps optimise fuel consumption. “If you imagine a superyacht that for most of its trips transits from A to B at a certain speed, that for example requires 1,500 horsepower, and for a limited time needs to go at higher speed that require 2,000 horsepower, then there may be fuel savings if you choose a hybrid solution,” says Graesdal Zilcken.

“Supplement the main engine of 1500 horsepower with an electric motor that can supply the last 500 horsepower only when needed, and this avoids carrying oversized equipment when it is possible to adapt the equipment to what the current operating situation is.

How to harness green technology

First, get the pitch right for power regeneration. Sea trials will determine the correct pitch position for your vessel. Second, understand the shaf speed and

control system for the pitch. The control system needs a built-in maximum RPM limit for the shaf in regeneration mode. When this maximum RPM is achieved, the pitch should increase and hereby lower the shaf RPM. And third, know the electrical power system on board. The most efcient system will be a shaf driven generator that via a converter produces DC to the batteries, and from there delivered to the grid.

“In practice, when the CPP is placed in regeneration position, the shaf will naturally rotate as the boat moves through the water. This movement, when connected to a Hundested Gear Box, is where regeneration happens,” says

Graesdal Zilcken. “When a generator or an electric motor is connected to the gear box it serves multiple uses; it can replace a normal diesel/auxiliary generator and at the same time function as a motor if ‘silent mode’ is required – your hybrid propulsion. This is a viable option.

“Several superyachts have successfully minimised the size of the main engine and when maximum power is needed the electrical motor provides a boost,” he adds. “Together with Hundested’s hybrid clutch for the input shaf of the gear box, full fexibility in hybrid propulsion is achieved – running fully electrical, diesel or both.

Y726 ARRIVES AT OCEANCO’S OUTFITTING FACILITIES

Oceanco Y726

At 111m, Y726 is one of the largest yachts by volume built by the Dutch shipyard.

In the colder climes of December last year, inhabitants of homes that line the Netherlands’ Oude Maas River were treated to a warming sight. Y726, the largest yacht built by Oceanco by volume to date by volume, slowly made its way upstream from the Dutch shipyard’s construction facilities in Zwijndrecht to its outftting facilities in Alblasserdam. Even for avid yacht spotters, the new build’s considerable 111m length, with a seismic beam of 16m and displacement of 4,550GT, would have made for intriguing viewing. But when paired with Rotterdambased grafti artist I AM EELCO, who was invited to paint onboard the yacht to add a cheerful wink to Y726’s transportation, the rarest of scenes duly unfolded.

Y726’s striking exterior is by Espen Øino, with warm and refned interiors from the boards of Mark Berryman Design. Naval architecture is by Oceanco in partnership with Lateral. Accommodating up to 28 guests in 14 guest cabins, with further room for a crew of 34, she promises to be one of the highlight launches of 2025.

“We are looking forward to getting started on the next phase of Y726’s construction,” says Oceanco’s project director, Edske Smit. “There is a very collaborative spirit on the project, and she promises to be a spectacular addition to the Oceanco feet once delivered. We are grateful for the positive partnership that has developed among everyone involved, including the co-makers and owner’s team.”

ALL PHOTOS COURTESY OF OCEANCO.

Design details

A few of Y726’s notable exterior features include a winter garden, covered cocktail area, outdoor cinema for starlit movie nights and a private owner’s area with Jacuzzi. There is also a multi-purpose entertainment area with a second Jacuzzi and swimming pool, and underwater lights for presence at anchor.

Inside, an indoor cinema lounge allows for daytime viewing for those who decide against spending time in the lower deck beach club lounge or its bar that opens directly onto the swim platform. A gym and spa with sauna and steam room complete the pamper package. An elevator provides easy access between decks. >>

Little has been released to date regarding the yacht’s confdential interior, though judging by the bank of large windows that are integrated throughout the exterior, it will surely beneft from spectacular views.

“Y726 is a prime example of what can be achieved when all parties at the table work together in a positive and collaborative way,” says Dan Jackson of Falcon Yacht Management, which serves as owner’s representative. “We are very much looking forward to entering the next phase of this project and delivering the client a stunning yacht.”

Also underway

The 117m Infnity is Oceanco’s largest motoryacht by length to date delivered in 2022. It temporarily held the crown of largest yacht ever built in The Netherlands before being eclipsed by the mighty 127m Oceanco sailing yacht Koru, a three-masted schooner delivered to her owner, Amazon founder Jef Bezos, in 2023. With a gross tonnage of 4,550 GT, Y726 she outweighs them all.

Also under construction is the semiconfdential 111m Oceanco Y722, which entered outftting in June 2023. Once delivered in 2025, it will be one of the shipyard’s largest deliveries, and a superyacht set to advance scientifc discoveries. Those who also caught a glimpse of this fve-decked yacht’s journey between construction sheds will have witnessed a sofly rounded bow with classic fare, alongside an elongated main af deck that leads to twin stairways to the deep swim platform and a transom that recesses of the platform.

Charlie Birkett, CEO and co-founder of Y.CO, which represents the owners of Oceanco Y722, described the yacht as “an exciting project which, we hope, will become a precedent for greater learning, equality and sustainability in our industry.”

Austrian shipyard Silent Yachts ended 2023 with a high, launching not one but two hulls of its new solar electric catamaran model, the Silent 62. Both 18.86m yachts feature Silent’s new automotive-based drivetrain, which according to the yard ofers owners the ability to travel the world faster when desired.

“It’s our most efcient, silent and high-tech drivetrain to date, resulting in more range

and higher top speeds,” says Silent founder and CEO Michael Köhler.

Custom confguration

Though based on the same platform, the two Silent 62s are far from identical. One features a layout that allows it to host both private and corporate events. “The owner plans to use the yacht for business events on board and decided to redesign it in order to match his specifc needs,” explains Köhler. “It’s the frst Silent catamaran to feature the possibility of several meeting rooms.”

The area forward of the main deck that is typically given to the master cabin is replaced with a fully equipped meeting

room, including a large centre table and seating for up to 10 people. The table can be lowered and covered with a mattress to convert it into a large bed. The room still includes an en suite bathroom. A second lower deck cabin has also been given over to a second smaller meeting room for up to six guests, while the third and largest meeting room is in the main salon.

In support of large parties and social events, the yacht is equipped with a custom audio system from Martin Audio. It comprises 32 speakers – fve on the fybridge, 17 on the main deck exterior and the remainder in the main salon and meeting rooms. An enlarged hydraulic stern platform with enough space for two

In contrast, the second Silent 62 enjoys a more conventional accommodation layout, with four guest cabins and one crew cabin in what the yard describes as a “front exit confguration.”

The two yachts’ technological similarities pave the way for all future Silent models. The drivetrain uses an upgraded watercooled battery that features higher energy density and greater capacity. Certifed by DNV-GL and Lloyd’s Register, benefts of the battery include faster charging rates due to optimised thermal management for the cells and extended lifespan with over 3,500 recharge cycles. A watertight IP65 rating, along with a self-contained monitoring and extinguishing system, are claimed to ofer the highest levels of safety on board.

New full carbon propellers – shaped like those found on submarines – contribute to the drivetrain’s noise and vibration-free mandate. “The carbon propellers ensure the ultimate on-water relaxation for owners and guests while boosting the efciency rating to a level which is unprecedented for yachts,” says Köhler.

Recorded at an efciency rating of around 96%, the new electric motors ofer the highest efciency throughout the operational range currently available on the market. It’s achieved by using the latest Synchronous Reluctance assisted Permanent Magnet (SRPM) technology. The motors’ extremely compact and robust structure is protected by an IP65 enclosure to maximise reliability.

Added lines

Silent Yachts leads the feld in the production of fully solar-sustainable oceangoing catamaran yachts that are powered by the sun and capable of cruising up to 100 nautical miles per day. This includes a tri-deck version of the Silent 62, which made its world debut at Cannes Yachting Festival.

Named the Silent 62 Three-Deck, it features a fully equipped third deck instead of a standard retractable fybridge, and nearly 2m of extra hull length. The upper deck can be confgured as an open sky lounge, a closed sky lounge or an owner’s suite. It’s equipped with two 340kW e-motors, a 150kW diesel generator, a 286kWh lithium battery and 42 solar panels capable of generating up to 17kWp.

Tankoa takes the next step

The recent acquisition of land at the Port of Civitavecchia brings growth for the shipyard and reft opportunities for Tankoa’s international pool of clients.

>>

The Genoa-based Tankoa Yachts turned heads at the Monaco Yacht Show in 2023. Just one look at its latest delivery, the 50m Grey, confrmed the sort of entertainment-led design brief that the boutique shipyard has become profcient in building. From the extended fydeck with Jacuzzi for soaks and cocktails to the supersized glass-encased foredeck pool facing a 144-inch retractable cinema screen with speakers, it screamed fun. So much so that, in January this year, the new build was snapped by a new buyer, freeing Grey’s original young north-eastern European owner to start on his next project.

It’s with these types of innovative builds in mind that Tankoa is pushing forward with its growth strategy in the construction and sale of yachts over 40m. In December 2023, it ofcially confrmed that it has acquired the ‘Ex Privilege’ area within the Port of Civitavecchia as part of its plan to establish a new and modern shipbuilding centre.

On the up

Tankoa has experienced consistent growth in recent years. As far back as 2021, it identifed Civitavecchia as a potential location for its pre-assembly of yachts, including metalworking and hull and superstructure construction. Final assembly remains the responsibility of its historic

Genoa shipyard. At present, it has the capacity to build four 40m+ yachts per year. With the Civitavecchia site secured, it will add a reft operation to its portfolio, with the capability to haul and launch yachts in and out of the water.

The next step for Civitavecchia requires an initial investment of EUR 3 million to launch its pre-assembly plans, as well as steel and aluminium metalworking activities. Operations in the former Privilege area are scheduled to begin with immediate efect, and will focus on one third of the available space.

“Our vision for Civitavecchia is to manufacture hulls and internalise part of

The 50m Grey.

the welding activities,” says Guido Orsi, Tankoa’s marketing manager. “Tasks that have been outsourced until now can be brought in-house, allowing us to have direct control over the quality of the work.”

Ripple efect

The Port of Civitavecchia is well positioned, just an hour from the cosmopolitan city sites in Rome, including the Colosseum and the Vatican, and only an hour and a half from the Pantheon and Piazza Navona. For visiting clients, captains and crew considering the shipyard for both new builds and reft, it proves a convenient and attractive proposition.

“Tasks that have been outsourced until now can be brought in-house, allowing us to have direct control over the quality of the work.”

The planned infrastructural works include the construction of a slipway, haulage and launching basin, alongside the installation of a travel lif with a capacity of 500-600t for yachts up to 60m. For larger yachts, Tankoa will use its existing 92m foating dry dock.

Civitavecchia aligns as a natural extension of the shipbuilding activities that have

developed over the past 150 years in the region between Livorno and Genoa, which accounts for over 30% of the world’s yacht production. The ripple efect is felt far and wide, with Tankoa’s expansion expected to increase the shipyard’s workforce to circa 250-350 employees over the next fve years.

Project Venus

YN 2065, THE LATEST IN HEESEN’S SUCCESSFUL 55 STEEL SERIES

Hull and superstructure joined on Project Venus.

ALL IMAGES COURTESY OF HEESEN YACHTS.

As the only 55m superyacht currently in-build in Northern Europe and available on the market at present, Heesen’s Project Venus represents a unique prospect for a savvy owner. The Dutch shipyard announced the joining of the yacht’s hull and superstructure in October 2023, with delivery slated for spring 2025. Considering the yacht’s Dutch pedigree, renowned quality and crafsmanship, not to mention a substantially shortened

delivery time thanks to the shipyard’s successful programme building on speculation, there is little not to like.

Add to that the exterior lines penned by long-standing Heesen collaborator Omega Architects, and a chic interior by Italian studio Luca Dini Design and Architecture, and it’s clear that Venus presents, as the name suggests, a stella opportunity.

According to Heesen, nothing has been lef to chance on the design and construction of its latest 55 Steel, with Omega Architects and Luca Dini Design and Architecture considering “every centimetre with purpose” to ensure the yacht delivers on both family cruises and extensive charters.

Length wise, Venus sits neatly in the coveted 40 - 60m size range; a sweet spot for owners who require boats large enough to carry all the necessary luxuries yet compact enough to access charming ports and small bays. Thanks to her sturdy steel hull and well-positioned stabilisers, comfort is guaranteed in all sea conditions, both underway and at anchor, making Venus as well-suited for long passages as she is for the buzzing Mediterranean yachting life.

Venus sleeps 12 guests in six large guest cabins, including a VIP suite on the bridge deck and four guest cabins on the lower deck. The full-beam owner’s quarters are

in the fnishes, refections and textures, the design thrives on contrasts and provides a unique harmony.”

“This aspect plays an essential role in making Venus a unique project,” she adds.

Outdoor essentials

A defning feature of the 252m2 outdoor is the space allocated for al fresco dining, entertaining and relaxing. The sprawling sundeck is a highlight, ofering guests versatility and a layout that enables ease of crew service with double stair access. A Jacuzzi, cocktail bar shaded by a hard top and lounge area with sofas, armchairs and cofee tables invite uninterrupted rest. For those who like to cruise with a view, sun loungers on the af deck deliver.

The bridge deck af terrace is home to an expandable dining table for further outdoor meals. It’s directly connected to the interior sky lounge, sectioned of by fush sliding doors to create a luxurious indoor-outdoor space. The inclusion of an upper pantry with a dumbwaiter further underpins top crew service.

On the main deck af, comfortable built-in settees lead on to the fxed swim platform via double stairs. Here, a large and inviting 35-square-metre beach club and a wellness area with sauna, day head, shower and a fully serviced bar make this area one of the most desirable onboard spaces. Tenders and toys are conveniently located forward on the main deck.

Go faster engines

Equipped with two MTU4000 M63 (IMO Tier III) engines, Venus is estimated to reach a top speed of 15.5 knots and provide a transatlantic range of 4,500 nautical miles at a cruising speed of 13 knots. This is achieved with a frugal fuel consumption close to 210 litres per hour, excluding the hotel load.

Venus’ impressive (and proven) performance is largely down to Heesen’s meticulous weight management in yacht construction, which has been developed for its lightweight and fast aluminium builds. It applies these construction techniques to its steel-hulled vessels, too. With the addition of a Fast Displacement Hull Form designed by Van Oossanen Naval Architects, as seen on Venus, efcient cruising and optimum comfort at sea is guaranteed.

Mariotti brings ‘Made in Italy’ prowess to cruise ships

A new 183m yacht contract with Aman Group and Cruise Saudi signals a crossover build for the Italian shipyard.

Mariotti’s expertise as a builder of superyachts, luxury cruise liners and ofshore vessels stretches back almost 100 years. More than half of the ultra-luxury cruise ships on the global market have been designed and built by the shipyard, while its reputation for superyacht construction has grown exponentially. In December 2023, it furthered that aim still, with the signing of a ship building contract with preeminent hospitality and lifestyle brand, Aman

Group, and Cruise Saudi, for Project Aman at Sea – a 50-suite 183m yacht designed by Sinot Yacht Architecture and Design and scheduled for delivery in 2027.

Hybrid vessel

The joint venture is described by Mariotti as “a frst of its kind luxury motor yacht”. Jonathan Wilson, Chief Executive Ofcer of Aman at Sea, will work closely with Chairman and CEO, Vlad Doronin to direct the development process and ensure the

vessel mirrors the level of detail and care experienced across Aman’s hotels. This includes showcasing the knowledge and expertise of Mariotti’s fne Italian crafsmen and contractors, such as electrotechnical specialists Ortec Santamaria and luxury yacht outftters De Wave Group. The vessel will be built under Lloyd’s Register class.

In addition, the vessel will be the frst dual fuel powered new build, using marine

diesel oil and methanol in place of fossil fuels. An array of dining options, including an informal all-day restaurant, international options and a relaxed club and lounge, are twinned with an Aman Spa, complete with Japanese garden, two helipads, and a beach club at the stern with direct access to the water. All 50 guest suites will have a private balcony.

“We are proud that Aman Group has trusted and selected our shipyard for this pioneering project representing the frst and true convergence between an ultraluxury ship and a private yacht,” says Marco Ghiglione, CEO of T. Mariotti. “It creates a new category of vessel and the frst with dual fuel technology.

Hospitality yachting

Aman is no stranger to providing elite hospitality on the water. Its fagship yacht, Amandira is a custom-built, two-masted Phinisi sailing and diving vessel with fve spacious cabins and a crew of 14. Whereas Amandira ofers exploration in the remote islands of Indonesia’s Flores Sea, Aman at Sea will cross the world’s oceans.

“With 35 hotels, resorts and branded residences across 20 destinations, Aman at Sea marks a new direction for the brand and the chance to bring Aman’s exceptional design, which is integral to the brand’s ethos, into an entirely new setting,” says Doronin. “We take pride in working with those who are best in class for their industry and in partnering with T. Mariotti, it enables us to fulfl our strategic vision of bringing the spirit of Aman to the world’s oceans, reframing luxury hospitality and creating a whole new category in on the water discovery.”

Reft works

Mariotti’s contract signing comes just months afer it completed reft works on iconic superyacht, 86m Kingdom 5KR.

Originally launched as the Jon Bannenberg-designed Nabila in 1979 in Viareggio, Italy, and previously owned by Saudi billionaire Adnan Khashoggi and former US president Donald Trump, Kingdom 5KR was on her eighth stop at the Genoese shipyard since 2016.

The substantial reft works carried out by Mariotti took place between March and May in 2023 in the Ente Bacini area and included the installation of a new Water

Ballast Treatment System, improvements for shore overhauls and numerous mechanical works on the propulsion and directional propellers, rudders and axles to bring the yacht in line with Classifcation Society requirements.

The fairest of them all

Fair Lady receives a face lif at Royal Huisman’s reft facility.

Built in 1928 by Camper & Nicholsons to a Charles E. Nicholson design, the 37m classic motor yacht, Fair Lady, is a beacon of yachting’s golden age. Her vintage good looks and shipbuilding pedigree have ensured a succession of doting owners over the years, all of whom have invested in keeping the yacht in top condition. This includes a signifcant rebuild at British yard Pendennis in 1996, and further refts in 2006 and 2013, during which the yacht received a pear-wood interior penned by John Munford.

In 2021, Fair Lady was scooped up by a new owner also keen to keep the vintage vessel in peak condition, as well as complete multiple major upgrades. He embarked on a thorough and rigorous two-phase programme at Huisft, Royal Huisman’s

dedicated division for reft, rebuild and renewal, before taking fnal delivery of his reftted yacht in December 2023, ready for 2024 cruising.

Fit for purpose

Huisft’s headquarters, located in Amsterdam, have three heated main halls and deep seawater quays for in-water work. Drawing on the in-house design, crafsmanship and engineering capability of its sister companies – Royal Huisman and Rondal – Huisft caters to a wide spectrum of new and repeat clients. Ofering everything from refurbishment to classifcation-driven refts and maintenance work, to complete reconfgurations, it’s a one-stop-shop for reft and repair.

Fair Lady arrived at Huisft in November 2021 for phase one of the planned works. The three-month works included hull repairs, hull painting and varnish repairs, as well as maintenance of the main engines, gensets and stabilisers. The cooling water system was replaced, and tanks were cleaned and repaired. Interior work included a new main salon, galley and pantry with updated equipment installations. The guest cabins were refurbished, and new carpets were installed.

Phase one was completed in time for the owner to enjoy a summer season of sailing, before the yacht returned to the sheds for phase two in September 2022. The second instalment of works saw the engine room stripped, the twin Gardener main engines

In September, after the owner’s frst successful season aboard his yacht, he returned Fair Lady to Huisft for phase two. During this time, the engine room was stripped, and the twin Gardener main engines were overhauled; new gensets were installed as well as new stabilisers.

Further repairs were made to her hull plating, which necessitated additional hull painting. The crowning glory was an entirely new bridge. Fair Lady is now well prepared for future voyages in the years to come.

Featuring a steel hull and wooden superstructure, Fair Lady is a snapshot in time. Original features include the 1920s ship’s wheel and brass binnacle which sit alongside state-of-the-art navigational equipment.

overhauled, and new gensets and stabilisers installed. Most notable of all was the inclusion of an entirely new bridge.

Vintage appeal

Featuring a steel hull and wooden superstructure, Fair Lady is a snapshot in time. Original features include the 1920s ship’s wheel and brass binnacle which sit alongside state-of-the-art navigational equipment. Formal dining is enjoyed in the traditional mahogany-panelled dining room, while the lounge area with comfortable seating, art nouveau furniture

and a contemporary AV/IT system is the ideal space for relaxation.

Despite being designed and built before many of today’s yachting trends had emerged, the yacht still provides many opportunities to indulge in life at sea. Large deck spaces invite both sunbathing sessions and al fresco dining, including the partially shaded sun deck with wooden loungers and views all around. Fair Lady accommodates eight guests in fve cabins, including a master suite with an en suite and private ofce. There is further accommodation for a crew of six.

“The on time and successful relaunch of Fair Lady is the result of intensive and fruitful teamwork among everyone at Huisft, as well as the thoughtful owner and his representatives,” says Huisft’s manager, Stefan Coronel. “Thanks to the owner’s vision to preserve Fair Lady’s heritage, this classic motor yacht will not become forgotten history. We are proud to have been a part of Fair Lady’s new lease of life.”

Hydrex keeps drydock at bay

When 84m Feadship-built motor yacht Savannah burst onto the scene in 2015, she did so with the distinction of being the frst hybrid superyacht on water. Since then, the yacht has had further success on the charter market, buoyed by a crew of 24 providing top notch service for up to 12 guests. When in May 2022, a signifcant technical issue occurred in between charters, it was Hydrex that came up with the solution.

“We had a situation whereby in the space of seven days we encountered quite severe issues with both depth sounders,” says Savannah’s captain, Chris Durham. “For redundancy we have one forward and one af. The af one stopped transmitting completely and the forward one became intermittent and didn’t give us a solid echo.

It was quite a tricky situation.”

“[Yachts are] not allowed to sail without depth readings,” he adds, “and it’s certainly not something you want to be without if you’re navigating anywhere.”

When the yacht’s engineers were informed the depth sounders couldn’t be repaired without coming out of the water, the yacht’s management company, Y.CO Luxury Yacht, put Durham in touch with Hydrex. “When I saw that changing transducers was a specifc service ofered by Hydrex, I got on the phone right away,” he says.

Rapid solutions

With Savannah located in Göcek in Turkey and Durham unfamiliar with the local yards, heading to drydock would have meant sailing to Genoa or Barcelona. That

would have incurred a minimum cost of EUR 25-30,000 for lifing the yacht and completing the repairs, not including the cost of fuel for the return trip itself. The availability of Hydrex divers, therefore, provided both a cost efcient and time sensitive solution.

“Time was incredibly important to us as we didn’t know the exact schedule of the upcoming charter, so we were very impressed with what we were able to accomplish and organise with Hydrex over a weekend,” Durham says. “Having initially reached out on Saturday, by Sunday we had arranged for a team to fy out on Tuesday, complete the job on Wednesday and fy back on Thursday. It was extremely swif correspondence late into the night on the weekend, and very helpful.”

Safe and seamless

From the initial correspondence to stepping on board to the post report, it was a seamless operation with both the forward and the af transducers successfully and safely switched out. “We went over the plan and which depth sounder we were going to tackle frst and set to work,” says Durham. “The chief engineer was very happy with how everything developed and progressed.”

For Hydrex, which provides fast underwater and afoat services to vessels in need around the world, it was business as usual.

Following the success of the transducer replacements, the chief engineer, Andrew Gerrard, followed up with Hydrex a few months later to use the same approach for a diferent problem with the yacht’s anodes that also looked as though it could only be remedied in drydock.

“Our main sea strainers were quickly becoming fouled, which meant the frequency of manual cleaning had greatly increased,” he explains. “We were already experiencing an increase in temperatures in our LT and HT cooling systems and the coolers required manual cleaning on a monthly rather than six-monthly basis. This would have only increased with the amount of time ‘unprotected,’ eventually to a point where we couldn’t have kept up with the manual cleaning and it would have stopped us from sailing.”

Timely operations

Savannah was positioned in Antibes for the second round of works, but again, time was short. “We aren’t ofen in the same place for long, so it was important to be

able to undertake the job without a big time window,” says Gerrard.

“Having that expertise and competence on board with the Hydrex team who can fx something if it doesn’t go to plan or any issues come up with changing an anode or a transducer in the water was the biggest thing for us,” adds Durham.

For Hydrex, which provides fast underwater and afoat services to vessels in need around the world, it was business as usual. “Whether it’s a 350m container ship or an 84m super yacht, the same expertise and level of service is available to provide a rapid, high quality solution,” says the company spokesperson.
