PUBLISHER’S NOTE

Welcome

W

e have entered 2022, a new year filled with new opportunities and a fresh edition of ShipBuilding Industry. I think it is safe to say that the theme for 2022 is sustainability. With resources getting more scarse and protecting the environment as a top priority, the maritime industry is working hard on implementing new technologies to pave the way towards greener shipping methods. If there is one thing that we have learned in the challenging past two years, it is that we are more resilient, patient, and flexible than we knew we were. The maritime industry has proved this by finding new ways to connect, meet, and innovate. This year, Nor-Shipping 2022 has been rescheduled. After the difficult decision to cancel the scheduled January exhibition and event programme, the global maritime and ocean industries will gather in Oslo and Lillestrøm in spring. The rescheduled date will allow for freer international travel, less social distancing, and a more vibrant networking, knowledge sharing, and business platform. Read more about the rescheduled event on page 10. The first issue of ShipBuilding Industry also includes a preview of Asia Pacific Maritime 2022, an insight in the possibilities of conversion, upgrades, and retrofit solutions of different vessel types, and the latest developments in NAVCOM technology and marine propulsion and power generation.

ShipBuilding i n d u s t r y

Other publications by Yellow & Finch:

We also have an impressive article on the recently finished high ice class cultural expedition cruise vessel SH Minerva, accompanied by stunning photos of London-based photographer Sasha Gusov, who captured the vessel and the Antarctic in a magical way. And of course, ShipBuilding Industry wouldn’t be complete without some ship reports that will spark everyone’s interest. We cannot wait to meet everyone again at the maritime trade shows of 2022 and we are looking forward to a new year of shipbuilding novelties!

NEWS IN BRIEF DNV selected to lead ammonia bunkering safety study

DNV has been selected to lead an ammonia bunkering safety study by the Global Centre for Maritime Decarbonisation (GCMD) in Singapore. The pioneering study aims to define a robust set of safety guidelines and operational envelopes that will establish the basis of a regulatory sandbox for ammonia bunkering trials at two local sites. To that end, DNV will team up with Singapore’s leading infrastructure developer Surbana Jurong and the Singapore Maritime Academy (SMA). DNV’s work scope will comprise ammonia demand forecasting, bunkering site recommendations, the development of conceptual designs of bunkering modes like truck to ship or ship to ship, HAZID/HAZOP/QRA studies, as well as drafting of technical and operational guidelines.

KM to supply 20 state-of-the-art azimuth thruster units Kongsberg Maritime is excited to announce that it has recently signed a sizeable contract with Sanmar Shipyards in Turkey to deliver 20 highperformance, future-proof US205FP and US255FP thruster units for installation on new Azimuth Stern Drive (ASD) tugboats. NEWS IN BRIEF 2022 - Your future starts here Asia Pacific Maritime (APM) is at the centre of maritime conversation. Held in Singapore, it is the arena where the global maritime industry convene every two years to forge partnerships and discover business opportunities. With Asian economies expected to regain pre-pandemic levels in 2022, APM is even more essential as a gateway between Asia and the world. Singapore provides an anchorage for APM to bring together key decision makers, whilst capitalising on its key role on the global stage as a leading Maritime Nation and trade linkages to the Asian markets. As the industry discusses new possibilities and change, it is now more imperative than ever for the community to embark on achieving real results and make real progress. Read more about the event in our preview of APM in this edition of ShipBuilding industry. i. apmaritime.com

Damen signs up Erma First Damen has signed its first contact with ballast water treatment systems producer Erma First. Greek company Erma First will be supplying its oneTANK, which is the world’s smallest ballast water treatment system. oneTANK uses chemical injection methods to clean ships’ ballast water and therefore represents an important expansion of Damen’s ballast water treatment system portfolio. The contract also marks a key milestone in the cooperation between Damen and the Greek maritime supply sector. Damen Green Solutions has a broad selection of ballast water treatment systems in its range. These offer ship-owners various capacities and techniques in treating their ballast water. With the addition of the Erma First oneTANK, Damen can provide clients with a solution that is not only small, but also modular. This modularity will be particularly important in Damen’s first project with Erma First, where the client was looking for a plug-and-play ballast water treatment product that could be placed on the deck of its vessel. i. damen.com

NEWS IN BRIEF

Huisman signs 2,600mt leg encircling crane contract Huisman has announced the signing of a contract with Daewoo Shipbuilding and Marine Engineering (DSME) for delivery of another 2,600mt Leg Encircling Crane (LEC). This follows a previous order, in July last year, for a similar crane. This crane will be installed on the second Wind Turbine Installation Vessel ordered by Eneti and constructed by DSME. The LEC will be outfitted with a 155m boom, which – similar to the first crane – was extended to reach an unparalleled lifting height of 174m above deck. This brings the hook height to approx. 215m above LAT. This, combined with its 2,600mt lifting capacity, gives the crane a degree of future-proofing, preparing it for handling the next generation of wind turbine, with up to 20MW capacity. i. huismanequipment.com

Contract for Jan De Nul and Vattenfall

For the offshore wind farm Vesterhav Nord & Syd in Denmark, Jan De Nul Group will transport and install a total of 41 wind turbines of 8.4MW each on behalf of Vattenfall Denmark. All together, these turbines will produce enough green electricity for the annual needs of approximately 380,000 Danish households. Jan De Nul’s jack-up installation vessel Vole au vent will be mobilised for this installation project. The contract between Jan De Nul and Vattenfall includes the design, engineering, manufacturing, procurement and delivery of the Sea-Fastening. Jan De Nul will also be responsible for the engineering of the RAMS for the marine operations related to the wind turbine installation, as well as the transport and installation of the 41 Siemens Gamesa wind turbines with the jack-up installation vessel Vole au vent.

Damen Shoalbuster 3815 SD delivered Damen Shipyards has delivered a new Shoalbuster 3815 SD to Caspian Offshore Construction LLP (COC). The Shoalbuster 3815 SD is one of the newest and largest vessels in the Shoalbuster range and stands out for its ability to operate in waters of no more than 120 cm in depth. Named the Caspian Amwaj, this new addition to COC’s fleet will initially be deployed on a project in the Arabian Gulf, the company’s first in the region. The Shoalbuster 3815 SD is a highly versatile workboat capable of taking on a wide variety of assignments. Handling anchors, buoys and hoses, as well as towing and other general support tasks for the offshore oil & gas industry, all fall within its operational profile. Suitably equipped it can also undertake dredging and support activities in waters that few other vessels can access. i. damen.com

NEWS IN BRIEF Royal Bodewes delivers world’s first hybrid self-discharger Shipping is on the eve of an energy transition. The goal is clear: to move from fossil fuels to zero carbon energy sources and technologies. The ways in which this goal can be achieved, vary. Royal Bodewes is proudly joining this transition by delivering the world’s first newly built hybrid self-discharger: MVAasfjell. And if it is up to the shipping company, that is just the beginning. On 15 December 2021, MV Aasfjell, a 9400DWAT general cargo ship built for Norwegian Shipping Company Aasen Shipping, successfully completed her sea trials. The vessel was delivered on 22 December. Unique to MV Aasfjell is that it is hybrid: next to the MGO main engine, she has an electric motor and tons of batteries, allowing her to sail emission-free. i. royalbodewes.com

Schottel propulsion systems for first fully electric U.S. tugboat Crowley’s new 25m vessel eWolf, the first all-electric tug to be built and operated in the United States, will be equipped with Schottel systems. As part of the fully integrated electrical package, Schottel supplies two Rudder Propellers type SRP 430 featuring the LE-Drive (“Embedded L-Drive”). MariHub, the data IoT Gateway and monitoring solution, completes Schottel’s scope of delivery. To be constructed at Master Boat Builders shipyard in Coden, Alabama, and designed by US-based Crowley Engineering Services, it is scheduled to enter operations by mid-2023. eWolf will support ship arrivals and departures at the Port of San Diego in California. The propulsion system of eWolf consists of two electrically driven Schottel Rudder Propellers type SRP 430 LE (2,050kW each) featuring propeller diameters of 2.5m. Thanks to this, the vessel will achieve a bollard pull of around 70 short tonnes. i. schottel.de

NOR-SHIPPING 2022

Taking place every two years, Nor-Shipping operates as a hub for international decision makers from both the private and public spheres.

Nor-Shipping 2022 has been postponed and will now take place from 4-7 April.

T

aking place every two years, NorShipping operates as a hub for international decision makers from both the private and public spheres. This is where shipowners and operators mix with politicians, equipment suppliers, NGOs, innovators, investors, business leaders, and a broad range of ocean stakeholders in a unique environment designed to enable deals, build relationships and spread knowledge. Nor-Shipping 2022 has been postponed and will now take place from 4-7 April. After the difficult decision to cancel its scheduled January exhibition and event programme, The Arena for Ocean Solutions will now gather the global maritime and ocean industries in Oslo and Lillestrøm in the spring. The rescheduled date will allow for freer international travel, less social distancing, and a more vibrant networking, knowledge sharing, and business platform. Exhibitors and ticket holders that have made bookings will have them seamlessly transferred to the new date, while a revamped activity programme – including the prestigious Ocean Leadership Conference and innovative Blue Talks – is being finalised. The last Nor-Shipping in 2019 brought around 900 exhibiting companies and 50,000 international decision makers to Norway to connect, collaborate and do deals.

Face-to-face with the future “It gives me great pleasure to confirm this date and inform the industry that, although we’ve been delayed, they won’t have to wait too long to gather again!”,

“We see this a fresh start, and we can’t wait to welcome the industry ‘back to business’ again.”

comments Sidsel Norvik, Director of NorShipping. “It was obviously disappointing to postpone the January programme, but the power of Nor-Shipping lies in its ability to bring diverse stakeholders faceto-face, build relationships, share solutions, inspire one another, and do business. That would have been impossible under the Omicron restrictions imposed in the beginning of this year. This move allows authorities here, and abroad, to control the situation, while also shifting our activity to a time of the year when infection rates are naturally lower. Good things come to those who wait, and we believe the energy and enthusiasm that will be released when we finally come together again will be electric. This is something the industry can really look forward to.”

Re-connect, renew, revitalise Alongside the activities based in and around Nor-Shipping’s 22,000m2 exhibition facilities in Lillestrøm, a range of networking and knowledge events will take place in Oslo City Centre. One of the highlights will be the After Work at Aker Brygge initiative, where the industry gathers after office hours to mingle, connect, and enjoy an informal atmosphere at venues clustered in one of Oslo’s prime social hot spots.

NOR-SHIPPING 2022

Alongside the activities based in and around Nor-Shipping’s 22,000m2 exhibition facilities in Lillestrøm, a range of networking and knowledge events will take place in Oslo City Centre.

“It was obviously disappointing to postpone the January programme, but the power of Nor-Shipping lies in its ability to bring diverse stakeholders faceto-face, build relationships, share solutions, inspire one another, and do business.”

The week will also see a host of unique partner events, the Nor-Shipping Awards, and targeted activities to ensure optimal networking and ocean business opportunities. Main partners DNV and DNB are amongst those looking forward to welcoming the world to Norway.

Inspiring collaboration “Nor-Shipping is defined by its ability to bring people together from across the industry, and from across the world; connecting people and inspiring and enabling business progress”, remarks Knut Ørbeck-Nilssen, DNV CEO Maritime. He continues, “To us as a classification society, it is important that this can be done safely. We hope April delivers a window of opportunity for us to engage with one another again face-to-face, helping enable the collaboration we need as we target a more sustainable future.”

Industry reboot Ms Norvik notes, “There hasn’t been a large-scale industry event since the start of the pandemic, and our stakeholders see the next Nor-Shipping as an opportunity to get back to normal, or at least embrace the new normal, as we look to a future of sustainable success within the ocean. Our main partners

have re-committed their support, our theme of #ACTION in the ocean space is clearly chiming with an ambitious industry, and April will obviously see easier travel, networking and interaction as infection rates fall away and vaccination programmes continue. We see this a fresh start, and we can’t wait to welcome the industry ‘back to business’ again.”

The time is right Norwegian national coronavirus restrictions have been eased by the end of January 2022, while many other key industry markets – such as England, Denmark and France – have either ended theirs, or are in the process of fazing them out. Ms Norvik says this cements her belief that the April date is “the right one” for Nor-Shipping stakeholders. “We could’ve waited until Nor-Shipping 2023 next June”, she concludes, “but I think we’ve already waited long enough… Everyone has. It’s time for this unique industry to gather and take positive business #ACTION to enable a bright, profitable future. That’s a mission that just won’t wait. I’m really happy that our exhibitors agree and delighted that more are coming onboard.” i. nor-shipping.com

Alternative fuel options for container ships Container ships ordered today should be able to operate until the late 2040s, provided that a viable propulsion system is chosen. A new DNV guidance document provides comprehensive decision support. LNG presently remains the most attractive option. ALL PHOTOS COURTESY OF DNV, UNLESS MENTIONED OTHERWISE.

The container-shipping segment has been showing the strongest interest in alternative fuels.

F

or shipowners ready to order new ships today, the tough question is what fuel to build for. Answering that question is actually not as difficult as some may think, says Jan-Olaf Probst, Business Director Container Ships at DNV. While the ultimate carbon-free propulsion technology has yet to be determined, there are some fairly safe assumptions for decision makers to go by – for example that the future ship fuel landscape is going to be more diversified than in the past, i.e. that certain fuels will be predominant on specific routes and/ or for specific ship types. Furthermore, there is currently no alternative to combustion engines in sight for oceangoing vessels. The crucial question is which fuel technology is the safest

investment decision for the lifetime of a vessel built in the mid-2020s.

DNV alternative fuels guidance document To provide decision support to owners, DNV has published a guidance document called Alternative fuels for containerships. The paper should be viewed as a “living document”, says Mr Probst – it will be amended over time as new findings become available. The first edition provides some general information as well as an in-depth discussion of LNG; chapters on other alternative fuels will follow soon, starting with methanol. “Since DNV has no vested interest in any particular fuel solution, our advice is entirely neutral, based on

LNG is currently the most realistic alternative fuel option: The technology is mature, a full regulatory framework exists, and bio methane can eventually be used as a drop-in fuel.

scientific facts, sound industry experience and feasibility calculations only,” stresses Mr Probst. “Our main goal is to support the maritime industry in meeting the decarbonization targets.”

Strong arguments for LNG The reason DNV decided to begin its discussion of alternative fuels with LNG is simple, Mr Probst says. “LNG is fully established as a ship fuel and embedded in a comprehensive regulatory framework, in particular the IGF Code; LNG technology and expertise is mature and has been around for a long time. Moreover, LNG is the most frequently transported gas worldwide; LNG is the first gaseous fuel to have received full regulatory approval; there is proven know-how for building, bunkering and operating LNG-powered ships; and the bunkering infrastructure has grown so fast that nearly all major seaports can now provide refuelling opportunities.” LNG bunkering vessels can be deployed practically anywhere, and bunkering does not necessarily have to occur in port.

production capacity using renewable energy and hydrolysis. They plan to use biohydrogen and CO2 captured from industrial combustion processes to produce synthetic methane, the main component of natural gas. “Once sufficient quantities of ‘green’ methane are available, it can be blended with fossil LNG or fully replace LNG to achieve the required level of CO2 neutrality,” Mr Probst points out. “No infrastructure or on-board modifications will be necessary. In other words, LNG is currently the most realistic and low-risk alternative fuel for newbuilds, especially for deep-sea shipping.”

Detailed technical decision support The container-shipping segment has been showing the strongest interest in alternative fuels. A growing number of large container vessels are equipped with dual-fuel engines and either run on LNG or are LNG-ready. “The DNV alternative fuels document thoroughly discusses all aspects of building LNG-ready ships, including considerations such as different tank types and tank arrangement options and their pros and cons. It provides solid, well-founded, unbiased decision support,” says Mr Probst.

Of course, there cannot be a one-sizefits-all solution to decarbonization; the topic has to be evaluated individually for each ship type and operating pattern, Mr Probst cautions. A number of uncertainties regarding future fuel prices and availability remain for the time being; it is up to the individual owner to draw the final conclusions for the best way to proceed based on the facts available today. “Based on DNV’s analyses, it makes sense to build ships with propulsion systems that leave several future options open, so whatever conversion or retrofitting decision has to be made in ten or more years’ time, the financial consequences will be manageable,” says Mr Probst.

Extra costs less significant Mr Probst emphasizes that it is time for the industry to stop using HFO as a baseline fuel – whether in terms of fuel costs, the simplicity of on-board fuel handling systems or the distances that can be travelled without bunkering. These operating conditions are unsustainable, and the industry is well advised to look ahead and accept that the fuel future will be more complex – but it will be so for everybody. “Building a ship for alternative fuels is

MARINE PROPULSION & POWER GENERATION

“Building a ship for alternative fuels is definitely more costly than building a conventional vessel.”

definitely more costly than building a conventional vessel,” Mr Probst contends. “However, considering the extra costs and space requirements of a scrubber and SCR system in an HFO-fuelled vessel, the extra costs for LNG propulsion appear much less significant. Once an LNG-powered vessel reaches the breakeven point after five to eight years of operation, its operating cost is actually lower than that of a conventionally powered vessel. Provided that plans to introduce a CO2 taxation system go ahead, which appears likely, the cost difference will shrink even further and the break-even point will be reached faster as well.”

Benefits of green projects As a low-carbon technology that can eventually become carbon-neutral, LNG propulsion makes a newbuilding project much more attractive to financiers and charterers, the cargo market and, ultimately, the general public. What is more, combining a low-carbon project with an environmentally friendly financing scheme gives projects a compelling “green” character. Several newbuilding orders for larger container vessels running on LNG are already being financed as environmentally friendly projects via a “syndicated green loan” conforming to the Loan Market Association’s principles. “This kind of project is sure to set a new benchmark and will be the new normal,” says Mr Probst.

All these considerations are discussed thoroughly in the DNV document and presented in a way that helps decision makers arrive at the most appropriate solution for the ship they want to build.

Loss of container slots is negligible “We frequently hear the argument that valuable container slots will be lost when LNG tanks must be installed,” Mr Probst mentions. “But the actual number of slots sacrificed is minimal on a modern large container ship.” It is advisable to position the LNG tanks below the deckhouse in the case of a twin-island design, he points out, and to optimize the shape of the tank to account for the risk of sloshing. “Opting for Type B or C tanks instead eliminates this issue. However, there is no solution that has only positive aspects,” he says. “It is also important to fine-tune the engine, tank and fuelhandling arrangements to create an efficient and coherent overall system, and to discuss all these aspects in depth with the yard so considerations of economy on the shipbuilder’s side won’t compromise the operational fitness and profitability of the resulting ship.”

Certification and bunkering Designers of LNG container vessels should be aware of the regulatory restrictions surrounding bunkering. “It makes sense to arrange the bunkering equipment in a section of the ship where the bunkering process has the lowest possible impact on efficient loading and discharging,” says Mr Probst. Furthermore, the crew of an LNGpowered vessel must undergo specific training, and the responsible persons for bunkering must obtain a special certificate. “All this can be taken care of prior to delivery, and a comprehensive risk assessment should be a standard part of the planning process for any newbuild,” he emphasizes. LNG is available today and is easier to implement than what is commonly believed. It opens up a fuel perspective for the entire lifetime of a vessel built during this decade, including multiple options to eventually switch over to eco fuels to ensure compliance with emission regulations far into the future. i. dnv.com

Container ships ordered today should be able to operate until the late 2040s, provided that a viable propulsion system is chosen.

Actionable facts for equipment design The Alternative Fuels document also provides valuable input for key decisions about the on-board energy concept. “Every machinery concept comes with specific, calculable emission levels,” explains DNV expert Jan-Olaf Mr Probst. “For example, a high-pressure main engine has only negligible methane slip but cannot burn boil-off gas. Type C tanks can handle overpressure, while membrane tanks cannot, which can be an issue during a longer stay in port.” Photo courtesy of Port Pictures.nl

Seeing what others don’t With a knack for being in the right place at the right time, London-based photographer Sasha Gusov not only captured the wild majesty of Antarctica but the emergency extraction of the Antarctic Quest 21 expedition team. Mr Gusov, famed for his portraits of stars of the stage, silver screen, music and ballet, is more often engaged in his own artistic projects today. A constant traveller, crafting haunting images of life as he goes, the second cruise of Swan Hellenic’s brand-new ship SH Minerva was a natural choice for him to explore the vast expanses of Antarctica.

s h i p b u i l d i n g - i n d u str y.eu

Swan Hellenic.indd 21

Although unable to resist taking colour digital shots of Minerva’s stylish elegant interiors and works of art, Sasha opted for his beloved film camera to take atmospheric black and white photos conveying the fierce majesty of the Antarctic Peninsula. So, when Swan Hellenic came to the assistance of the Antarctic Quest 21 expedition commemorating the centenary of Shackleton’s final voyage, Sasha was there to testify to the prompt emergency extraction of the team, which risked being stranded on the peninsula. Mr Gusov prefers film for the way it makes him treasure every frame, and black and white film in particular for its heightened textures, evocative contrasts and soul. When you explore his photography, you’ll immediately see just what he means.

“I loved every minute with Swan Hellenic,” says Mr Gusov. “It was a truly in-depth experience that really opened my eyes. And what a ship – stunning! Witnessing the Antarctic Quest emergency extraction was a real privilege.” “It was a pleasure to have Sasha aboard”, comments Hotel Director Philipp Reutener. “He was warmly appreciative of everything we have worked so hard to create, from the expert lectures to the creative interior design and inspired gourmet cuisine. To have him with us, capturing the evacuation of the Antarctic Quest team, was an unforgettable honour.”

n important milestone has recently been reached in the construction of Les Alizés, the Next-Gen floating offshore installation vessel for offshore renewables and decommissioning. Jan De Nul launched Les Alizés at the CMHI Haimen shipyard in China. This vessel will be the largest Heavy Lift Vessel in Jan De Nul’s fleet, able to install XXL offshore wind components, in floating conditions and with ultra-low emissions.

Launch The launch of Les Alizés started on 2 January by flooding the dry dock in which the vessel was built. Once afloat, Les Alizés was moored alongside the adjacent quay wall. On 5 January, the official launching ceremony took place at the CMHI Haimen shipyard, in the presence of the shipyard management and Jan De Nul Group representatives. The final phase of the vessel’s construction can now begin, including sea trials. Les Alizés is due for delivery in H2 2022, in good time for her first assignment in Germany for the construction of Gode Wind 3 and Borkum Riffgrund 3 Offshore Wind Farms, transporting and installing 107 monopile foundations for the offshore wind major Ørsted.

Well on track Philippe Hutse, Director Offshore Division at Jan De Nul Group says, “The construction of our offshore floating installation vessel Les Alizés is well on track. We can look forward to delivery later this year, so that we can continue to build the future of offshore renewable energy. Together with our Offshore Jack-Up Installation Vessel Voltaire, which is also under construction in China, we will have the perfect set of offshore installation vessels that will be able to install current and future generations of offshore wind farms. This is how we offer our customers the most efficient installation solutions and results.”

Hybrid Drive Systems Operation profiles of tugs and workboats feature low engine loads for up to 90 percent of operation time. In such instances, an engine that is rated for maximum propulsive power works in an unfavourable partial-load range that is inefficient in terms of emissions and fuel consumption. Hybrid drive systems are predestined for applications with highly variable power ranges. These generally consist of two separate power sources (diesel and/or electric motors) per propeller with different power ratings. Schottel has further extended the system to a broader understanding of hybridization with SYDRIVE-M.

SYDRIVE-M connects a port and starboard mounted azimuth thruster in one vessel, allowing the thrusters to be driven together by only one of the main engines. In turn, this leads to reduced operating hours of the main engines, resulting in lower maintenance costs as well as less fuel consumption and lower emissions. The system needs no additional electronical components, which offers many advantages as demonstrated by three main operation modes: Light Operation or Free Sailing Mode, Full Thrust Operation Mode and FiFi-Mode.

Cheoy Lee Shipyards Cheoy Lee Shipyards (CLS) and Schottel are linked by a long-standing and reliable partnership. Around 100 vessels equipped with propulsion systems from the German company have been built at CLS in the past ten years. Its main production facility is located in southern China. eing built from the stock program allowed Royal IHC to comply with SEMAR’s request for an ultra-short delivery time. Following successful sea trials in the North Sea in October, the new vessel was delivered on time on 16 December for deployment on a national maintenance programme by the Mexican Navy. This will involve deepening rivers on the country’s east coast and helping to prevent flooding in Tabasco. As the Easydredge® is a standardised series of vessels, it benefits from short lead times and is a costeffective option for customers seeking quick delivery. The vessels are equipped to perform all normal dredging operations and they are easy to operate. The straightforward design and reliability of the vessel incorporates decades of hopper dredge innovation and will contribute to the efficiency of the SEMAR dredge fleet. The Bahia San Carlos was outfitted with standard options as well as

client specific modifications including a hydrographic presentation system (DTPS) and the Operations Monitoring application for onshore monitoring and supporting of the operation. In line with the Royal IHC philosophy to remain engaged with their client during the operations as a total solution partner, extensive training for the crew has been provided and spare parts for the vessel supplied. The relation with SEMAR dates back to the eighties when they first purchased dredger Ciudad del Carmen from Royal IHC. “Last year, SEMAR purchased a Beaver® from Royal IHC and recognises its vast experience and proven track record in the dredging market”, says Ronald van Son, Director Dredging Vessels. “The fast delivery time of less than a year was a crucial factor in its decision to order the Easydredge®. New year, new opportunities Another new and exciting journey for Royal IHC started on 1 January of this year, as Jan Pieter Klaver started as CEO of Royal IHC. He thus takes over from Gerben Eggink, who fulfilled the role of CEO on an interim basis for more than a year and a half. With the appointment of Jan Pieter Klaver, Royal IHC is bringing in an experienced CEO from the maritime sector. Together with Paul van der Harten (CFO) and Kees van der Snel (COO), they form the three-member Executive Board. After his training as a civil engineer at the Technical University of Delft, Jan Pieter started at Heerema. During his more than 25-year career at Heerema, Mr Klaver fulfilled various (management) roles, including manager of the Heerema shipyard in Vlissingen. Giving a second life to laid-up platform supply vessels The hulls of offshore vessels have become a part of the skyline of many offshore shipping regions. Over 1,900 offshore vessels are out of service, many of them for more than 6 years already. This laid-up fleet represents 30% of the total offshore vessel fleet of more

than 6,000 units, thus, not all these vessels will find their way into the market again. Over 600 units are platform supply vessels (PSV), ranging from 50 and up to 99m lengths, more than 50 of these have not left the construction yard yet. Fiftyfive per cent were delivered after 2005, which are vessels with a long life expectancy remaining. Platform supply

vessels represent a versatile platform that can be adapted to multiple userapplications and situations. Anchor handling tug supply vessels (AHTS) and offshore construction vessels (OCV) also present multiple possibilities for their alternative use in other markets.

Ulstein Group has, in recent years, explored 30 alternative market uses for existing platform supply vessels by means of conversion, upgrades, and retrofit solutions.

Conversion, upgrade, retrofit Ulstein Group has, in recent years, explored 30 alternative market uses for existing platform supply vessels by means of conversion, upgrades, and retrofit solutions. In case of conversion, a vessel is renewed, redesigned, and rebuilt to new technical and functional requirements. With an upgrade, the vessel is updated, renewed and/or the onboard systems and equipment are updated to higher standards regarding function, capacity, and capability to rebrand the vessel, and in case of a retrofit, new technologies or features are added to existing systems and equipment. These 30 applications relate to four different vessel markets: the energy markets, the leisure market, the ocean biomass and other miscellaneous industrial and contingency applications.

Five potential applications Five potential applications of platform supply vessels are highlighted in the following table. These are based on the ULSTEIN PX121 design, a medium-sized PSV which has demonstrated to be a flexible platform for alternative uses. The refurbishment of the ‘Ocean Adventurer’ expedition cruise vessel included a general modernisation throughout the vessel, with significant

technical upgrades, securing a vessel with increased fuel efficiency and, subsequently, a minimized carbon footprint.

Conversion to other vessel types Ulstein can transform an offshore vessel, such as a PSV, into another offshore type vessel, typically a multipurpose support vessel, light subsea construction vessel or offshore wind service vessel, or into a non-offshore vessel like a fish carrier (wellboat) or expedition cruise vessel. The platform supply vessels of the ULSTEIN PX121 design, ‘Esvagt Leah’ and ‘Esvagt Heidi’, were originally built at Ulstein Verft and returned to the yard in 2021 to be upgraded to more environmentally friendly power solutions, and to a new life as ERRV vessels. The scope of work by Ulstein included project management, procurement, engineering, production and power & control deliveries. A battery deckhouse with a grid support unit for hybrid power has been prepared, the methanol tanks rebuilt to carry liquids under the OSV Chemical Code, and on the main deck, new prefabricated deck houses have been installed accommodating rescue zones, and new Esvagt type Fast Rescue Boats. Ulstein Power & Control delivered the power and automation solutions to the vessels as newbuilds. Their delivery now included the upgrade of the power and

automation systems, the battery package, frequency converters, drives and switchboard reconstruction as well as its installation and commissioning.

Combining newbuilding and life cycle service activities It is not uncommon to see newbuilding and aftermarket activities being carried out in parallel at Ulstein Verft. Lifecycle services, including conversions, retrofits

and upgrades, are good complements to newbuilding projects, and allow for a better utilization of the resources of the yard. The upgrade projects can be minor to large works. Mobilization and demobilization of topside equipment such as cranes and towers, installation of ballast water treatment systems or periodical dockings are common at the site. i. ulstein.com

espite decades of experience as a motor supplier, Hoyer is still one of the newer players within the Oil and Gas industry. The harsh and unforgiving operating conditions require extremely rigorous standards for customisation, safety, documentation and testing of any equipment used. Demands are even higher when located in hazardous areas. For these reasons, suppliers must prove their worth before earning the trust of the industry, which is often a timely process. However, Hoyer’s oil & gas programme has already secured several strong references within the industry. These include explosion proof motors for compressors and various pumps on several LPG carriers as well as medium voltage motors for sea lifting pumps on two FSRU’s. In total, Hoyer has had more than 20 ships and other projects in the Oil & Gas industry.

The ambition for Hoyer Motors is to become the preferred Ex motor brand within selected Oil & Gas and marine niches. And the roadmap for achieving this goal is the same as always: quality products, strong documentation, and market leading responsiveness. Hoyer’s long history and experience

within other demanding industries has an influence on the Oil and Gas approach. Rather than diving straight at the most challenging areas of the sector, Hoyer aims to win in niche areas where familiar strengths gained in markets such

MARINE PROPULSION & POWER GENERATION

“I am proud to note that 2021 marked the official breakthrough for Hoyer Motors in the VLGC market.“

Initially, Hoyer has made a strategic decision to focus on the upstream production including niche segments such as LNG & LPG carriers, oil tankers, floating platforms such as FSRU’s & FPSO’s and supply vessels.

Dedicated Ex motor programme in Asia One of the cornerstones of Hoyer’s Oil & Gas engagement is the Explosion Proof Marine Motor Programme. In 2018, Hoyer initiated the development of an Ex motor supply chain in Asia to supplement the EU-based production. In the same year, Hoyer introduced their programme of medium voltage motors, another key product for the targeted Oil & Gas applications. This enables the company to meet customer expectations for quality, documentation and short lead times in both Europe and Asia, since most projects require customised solutions and extensive documentation and testing. Being able to produce, test, and deliver motors locally in Asia has been a deciding factor in many of Hoyer’s recent Oil & Gas reference projects where Hoyer has become an integrated part of the customers’ local supply chains.

Deepwell Cargo Pumps, typical applications that Hoyer delivers, are installed inside the tanks of chemical or oil tankers in order for their liquid cargo to be discharged from ship to shore.

New opportunities Hoyer aims to further develop the energy efficient Ex motor scope as well as to continuously develop the documentation and certification package. More long-term goals include being able to offer complete Ex solutions including motors, drives and cabinets as well as entering the market for offshore platforms and topside production. “I am proud to note that 2021 marked the official breakthrough for Hoyer Motors in the VLGC market. Because of the transition to liquified gas fuel as a more sustainable alternative to fossil fuels like coals and heavy fuel oil, we are seeing a rapid growth in the market for LNG and LPG carriers. The experience and acquired skills form the steppingstone towards new Oil & Gas opportunities, says Henrik Sørensen, CEO of Hoyer Motors.” i. hoyermotors.com

Planning a route is a complex and time-consuming task for crew and shore-side teams.

Environmental Planner OneOcean is the largest single digital solutions company in the maritime industry and global leader in digital navigation and voyage compliance. The business supports over 15,000 vessels in their regulatory and navigational activities, making life easier for ship owners and managers, both onboard and onshore. Its aim is to simplify e-navigation and compliance with the powerful OneOcean platform built for the future while giving onboard and onshore teams the real-time information they need when they need it. lanning a route is a complex and time-consuming task for crew and shore-side teams. With many factors to take into consideration, such as port, tidal and weather data as well as multiple stakeholders involved in the process, it can require a considerable level of resource and ongoing management. The integrated OneOcean platform facilitates collaborative navigation planning, consolidating all the

data required in one easy-to-use interface and providing a shared view to create a truly efficient workflow. Smarter situational awareness allows seafarers to optimise voyage planning and mitigate risk.

Environmental Planner A new feature of OneOcean Group’s Voyage Planning platform is the Environmental Planner. The

environmental timeline shows a realtime depiction of where a vessel currently is in relation to the environmental restrictions it must abide by. The company has expanded its platform capability to include a new and unique Environmental Planner, which uses a dynamic timeline to provide a real-time look ahead at the environmental rules and restrictions in force during a voyage. For the first time,

navigational and environmental planning can be done in a simple integrated workflow. With the addition of the advanced environmental timeline, the software platform enhances its offering for a unique Total Voyage approach that integrates and visually presents data, to both minimize risk and support effective decision-making.

Colour codes The timeline displays a comprehensive list of environmental events that can safely and legally take place aboard a vessel during a rolling 12-hour window, based on the ship’s departure time, its current position, and speed.

Active Environmental Timeline The Active Environmental Timeline can be generated as part of the ship’s official passage plan, as a section in the pdf document. Access to the environmental planner in the passage plan and the active timeline enables a coordinated approach for better decision-making in both the planning and monitoring stages of a voyage. Should the departure be delayed, both the timeline and document can be dynamically adjusted to reflect an

accurate representation of the ship’s position in relation to the environmental regulations in place along the route. If the vessel speed is increased, the timeline will adjust to accurately reflect that, as is refreshes every three minutes.

The new Active Environmental Timeline saves a great deal of effort by performing these re-calculations based on realtime information in just one click.”

“Traditionally, if a ship’s actual departure time doesn’t match the one on the passage plan, then all the environmental considerations have to be re-calculated. The new Active Environmental Timeline saves a great deal of effort by performing these re-calculations based on real-time information in just one click, enabling dynamic updates to all relevant data. This delivers real value to customers because they can now truly operationalise environmental planning, weaving environmental events and cadence into the planning stages for effective fulfilment throughout the voyage”, says Tony Brown, Deputy CTO.

Easier planning Decision makers can access an accurate picture of when and where environmental events can safely and legally take place aboard. This makes it much easier to plan operations with peace of mind that the ship is in full
