Italian shipbuilder, Benetti has delivered the second and third edition of the Benetti Fast 125’ line – Benetti Fast 125’ Skyler and Benetti Fast 125’ Constance Joy. Both yachts are equipped with the new generation propulsion system designed by Rolls Royce specifically for the Fast 125’ family: the Azipull Carbon 65 (AZP C65), a high performance, lightweight, steerable thruster that uses carbon fibre throughout, even for load carrying parts. They share also a revolutionary D2PDisplacement to Planing hull form with wave piercer bow that allows the owner to use the yacht in displacement mode with low fuel consumption at low speeds and in planning mode at higher speeds.
Motor Yacht Explora Ready for Refit Launch 46.63m classic motor yacht Charisma was relaunched in the Netherlands in June bearing the new name Explora following an extensive refit at Balk Shipyard. One of the guest cabins has been rebuilt into a massage salon, the wheelhouse underwent an interior and technical refit, with all electric systems, and a new bow thruster. Partly new teak decks were also laid.

his year marks the 40th anniversary of the Cannes Yachting Festival, Europe’s largest floating boat show held on 12 to 17 September at Cannes Vieux Port and Port Pierre Canto, Cannes. In celebration of this milestone, the show organiser, Reed Expositions France, has unveiled a new visual identity for the 2017 event, which will see a “shower of silver stars adorning the drapery to merge into the boat’s wake, and highlight the ‘pleasure of sailing’”. Speaking about the event, Michel Filzi, President of Reed Expositions France, said: “We are extremely pleased with the launch of the 2017 Yachting Festival, which follows on from the success of the show in 2016. Some major French and international shipyards have already signed up for the show. We have also contracted on a multi-year basis with the Chamber of Commerce of Nice-Côte d’Azur and the City of Cannes for the rental of the Vieux Port and Port Canto, and we are starting to work with the local authorities on the various technical aspects.”
On the Show Floor Despite assertions raised earlier this year by the Fédération des Industries Nautiques (FIN) with regards to the show’s organisers, Reed Expositions France has confirmed that it remains the ‘sole legitimate organiser’, and that its only concern at present is, as always, to ‘try to satisfy the everincreasing demands of the shipyards as best as possible, given the space constraints’. Attracting an international clientele of top level buyers who converge on the resort town on the French Riviera each year, the Cannes Yachting Festival boasts around 51,000 visitors, and no less than 530 exhibitors (more than 60 per cent hailing from abroad) who choose to network and meet in Cannes’ exceptional setting. With 300,000m2 of exhibition space, and two marinas in which to display 630 boats from 2.10 - 52m, which last year included 107 world premieres, 140 yachts longer than 20m, and 115 sail boats, the stakes are high for the organisers of the week-long event, not to mention the local economy.
Legal Matters At a press conference on the eve of the opening of the Düsseldorf Boat Show, FIN’s Chairman Yves Lyon-Caen declared that FIN was due to take back control of the organisation of the show, along with its Paris Nautic

event. In a contract dispute between the two organisers, the query has arisen over a clause in the contract that stipulates “that in the event of the end of the contract between the two partners, Reed would continue to organise the Yachting Festival for many years”. According to Reed Expositions France, on 21 october 2016, FIN informed Reed of its decision to terminate the contract, and on the same day filed a lawsuit before the Court (tribunal de Grande Instance or tGI) asking it to rule that this specific provision regarding the Yachting Festival was void. Much confusion has ensued, and following Reed’s request in midNovember for interim measures prohibiting FIN from acting out of line, the decision has been passed over for judgment by the tGI. As it currently stands, the court has not yet made a ruling, and the Cannes Yachting

Festival remains under the control of Reed Expositions France. Filzi commented: “I am astounded to see that the current FIN team has decided to go back on one of the fundamental and historical conditions of our agreements and thus reneging on their promise and that of their successive presidents.” “It is important to let the justice system do its job and I am very confident as to the outcome of the proceedings on the merits…I hope that FIN and the various parties involved in the case will show restraint and responsibility so as not to damage the Yachting Festival nor prejudice the interests of our exhibitors and the local economic players.”

ss is a city found in North Brabant, in the southern Netherlands. Quiet and unassuming with clean streets and leafy suburbs, it belies the technical advances and innovations happening right on its doorstep. Renowned for building yachts that outperform in terms of speed, range and stability – including award-winning 70m Galactica Super Nova launched in 2016 (the largest Heesen yacht built to date), and 42m Alive, the first yacht in the world to harness kinetic energy with ‘Hull Vane’ – change is afoot for the company. Heesen’s recently appointed CEO Arthur Brouwer is set on taking the pioneering yard to the next level, and with a solid foundation of artisanal craftsmanship and design engineering, Heesen’s latest launch, 50m Home, is a new breed of yacht altogether. Delivered to her owner in June 2017, Home features an aluminium superstructure with a radical exterior design by Omega Architects, and is the ideal yacht for spending long stints on board in the Bahamas, thanks to her shallow draft of 2.15m. enough, that’s exactly where her owner intends on cruising, however, luck has little to do with it. Bespoke from bow to stern, Home is the result of creative input, technical ingenuity and original design, of a skilled workforce of around 600, slowly crafted from concept to completion over the course of four years.
Silent Cruising Building on nearly four decades of in-house knowledge and expertise, Home is the world’s first Fast Displacement yacht equipped with hybrid propulsion, meaning she is not only stunning to look at, ultraefficient in the water, and low fuel-burning, but also one of the quietest yachts on the ocean, offering her owner the ultimate luxury – a silent cruise. less noise and vibration, more flexible power management, and increased efficiency. And all of this is achieved without compromise on speed or costs; Home reaches a respectable top speed of 17.2kts, and a cruising speed of 12kts, and has a fuel consumption of 98l/h (excluding generators), which at 10kts reduces to a staggering 57.5l/h.

Italian Design Her contemporary profile with vertical bow, wide central staircase and spacious aft platform are just some of the design features that make Home a cut above the rest. But it is also her sophisticated linear interior by Italian studio Cristiano Gatto Design that gives her a relaxed and bright feel throughout. Appointed by the owner once the superstructure was already in place, Gatto was tasked with a design brief that asked for “easy and clean”, which equated to stripped down surfaces, a simplified approach, and to maximise space and volume. “We often say that 90% of a designer’s job is to be a translator – from owner to design, and design to shipyard – the designer is in the middle of the two,” says Gatto. “But I know the ‘language’ at Heesen’s shipyard very well, and I managed to easily communicate with the owner, so it was a comfortable translation.” His two-tone palette uses no less than fourteen different

Fabrics, leathers, and lacquered surfaces are in polar white contrasting with the warmth of teak, while burgundy made-tomeasure loose furniture (the owner’s favourite colour) and accessories by Paola Lenti and Franco Poli punctuate throughout. “Our characteristic method of designing is about having the capacity to combine materials together to great effect,” says Gatto, “and to have a knowledge about the use of materials, which in turn allows you to design interiors that vary in style but seamlessly connect. With Home, we used three different types of black marble within three different areas of the bathrooms, and fourteen kinds of white but with different materials to give different effects – that is the common theme on board any of our projects.”
Living Inside Out Asked to step in when the construction drawings were prepared, Gatto and his team were in the restricted position of having to modify an existing scheme by selecting materials and colours, and removing surfaces in attempt to “simplify as much as possible”. “We tried to clean up the design because this was one of the main requests that we received from the client,” explains Gatto. “The client saw some of our previous work, and was very clear on what he did and didn’t like, so

from that direction we modified, and used what was there.” One of the most outstanding areas on board is the sky lounge with floor-toceiling windows like a veranda overlooking the ocean. Keen to not “over-design” the interior, both Gatto and the owner’s key objective to allow the outdoors in has been skilfully achieved – that is, to give a sense of pared-down emptiness internally to allow the scenic vistas of the Bahamas to take centre stage.
“The yacht’s name is Home – it’s a home from home – and the owner will be on board for many days,” says Gatto. “You therefore need to make an interior that looks rich and simple for the long term – and that was one of the most difficult things. But we achieved it by creating an empty white canvas for the interior so that the outdoors and the artwork serves as the colour coming in – you live inside your art!”

growing global audience.
The Sapphire Experience Taking place on 27 to 30 September, each year the Monaco Yacht Show welcomes almost 590 exhibiting companies and partners keen to learn about the latest market trends, as well as existing and potential yacht owners looking to make a purchase. Over the past four years, the show organiser has evolved the event to attract more buyers (both private and trade) to encourage direct contacts between exhibitors and a new clientele of final owners. In a bid to attract more wealthy visitors on the quays of the Monaco Yacht Show, a made-tomeasure premium program, exclusively designed for final buyers of superyachts, has been devised, named the ‘Sapphire Experience’. This includes the second edition of the Monaco Yacht Summit, taking place on 26th September, which will welcome a delegation of new hand-picked visitors. Taking the form of workshop discussions, it is targeted at a clearly-identified audience interested in purchasing or managing a superyacht (participation by invitation only). In the evening 400 guests – top managers of yachting companies and private clients – will be invited to the opening ceremony of the 27th Monaco Yacht Show, which will also incorporate the show’s fourth yachting awards ceremony.

Yachts of 2017 at the centre of the event are the 125 superyachts at anchor, each one unique, and often showcasing the latest on board technology, design and innovations. This year is set to witness a raft of new activity and launches, with 87% of exhibiting companies having renewed their participation four months prior to the event, and around 40 superyachts delivered in 2017 have been registered and will make their debuts in Monaco presented on the water. This year’s visiting yachts will include 92m aquarius, a pure custom feadship created on behalf of, and in partnership with, an experienced yacht owner, and featuring a contemporary exterior design; perini navi’s 60m ketch, the third in the most recent Series of Blue water Sailing Yachts from the Italian shipyard; game changer, damen’s

Additional Attractions although the 125 superyachts are the biggest attraction to the show, there are additional elements drawing the crowds spread across 9,700m2 of exhibition space. The car deck, launched in 2016 and this year relocated on the Quai antoine Ier, will present fifteen or so prestige vehicles, some of which will be available to the show’s premium clients for test drives. adjacent to the car deck is the Tender & Toys Show, which presents some of the trendiest nautical accessories on the market, visible both on the quay and afloat. The Quai antoine Ier will also be the site of a new space for exhibitors’ booths and reception for the yachting clientele: The Starboard. Yachtlite Set to Exhibit at All Shows
Yachtlite, experts in illuminating, threedimensional lettering
Yachtlite, experts in illuminating, three-dimensional lettering, will be present at the upcoming trade shows in Monaco, Fort Lauderdale and Amsterdam. As in previous years it will share a stand with Deutsche Yachten/Superyacht Germany at both MYS and FLIBS, and at METS, it will exhibit in hall 10 in the Superyacht Pavilion. The company successfully delivered significant, large and stunning projects to shipyards and owners, in addition to its regular medium and smaller projects that it produces. And just prior to the summer months, Yachtlite won several orders for 2018 and 2019. Among these are projects for a number of superyachts and, for the first time ever, for illuminated letters and logos for a series of big cruise liners for a ship owning company. In the light of the steadily increasing demand especially for major and special projects, Yachtlite has expanded its in-house resources by around 20% in the fields of design, sales and production, and is, therefore, well set and equipped for the coming seasons of 2017 and 2018.

Zenoro’s Hybrid Technology
Just as in the propulsion market, hybrid generator systems have carved out a space in the superyacht industry, with Zenoro manufacturing fixed and variable-speed products. Ivo van den Berg, Business Manager at Zenoro, comments: “Today’s variable-speed and dualspeed generators use the yacht’s engine better than ever before, making them more fuel efficient, and giving an increased lifespan and lower noise levels, with low revolutions per minute (RPM) for low loads and high RPM for high loads. A good example of this is Heesen’s newest superyacht M/Y Home (unveiled at MYS 2017) with her hybrid diesel-electric solution.” A demand for ‘clean air’ and soot-free technologies is also driving change in the marine generators industry – powered namely by owner expectations for clean air on board, according to Zenoro, as well as legislative rules such as IMO Tier III legislation and Emission Control Areas (ECAs) in North America and the Caribbean. Meet the Zenoro team at MYS and discuss all new developments with them.

t the time of writing, the annual figures for the global superyacht fleet have just been released showing that the members of the hISWA holland Yachting group have consolidated their strong position in terms of market share. results in the global superyacht sector are a little like the waves on which its scions sail, and there is rarely, if ever, linear growth. While enjoying record years like 2015 – itself a logical outcome of the flurry of orders placed once it became clear that the economic crisis that started in 2008 had run its course – it is far more instructive to take a medium-term view to see how things are developing. The dutch market share has continued to grow over the past three years and we expect this to be the case for the foreseeable future.
Experts at Connecting As an association, the hISWA holland Yachting group is uniquely qualified to take a helicopter view because of our many decades of experience. did you know that the hISWA holland Yachting group was set up by yacht builders way back in 1970? I share this snapshot of history with you to illustrate the unrivalled heritage the dutch have when it comes to international business in the superyacht world. our members understand like no other the need to adapt to different markets while retaining a unified front in terms of premium quality and an unrivalled service excellence. put simply, we are experts at connecting the maritime world based upon the three pillars of Stability, heritage and personality. That expertise has never been more relevant in
our changing world. With a fleet of over 6,000 superyachts, facilities in the popular areas of the mediterranean and caribbean are becoming more crowded and owners are exploring other parts of the world with relish. Some of the fiscal regulations being introduced are also having an impact on the traditional european destinations. Add in the natural curiosity of yacht owners to head for pastures new and it is no surprise that regions such as Scandinavia and the baltics are growing in popularity.
Stronger Together Taking a collaborative approach is a fundamental part of being a member of this association and of its success for almost half a century. Together, the yards and the specialised supply companies – all located within a radius of just 200km – have navigated the stormy waters of recession on various occasions, leveraging their individual and collective experience. We are used to some years being leaner in terms of deliveries, but that all depends on the pipeline. What is certain today, is that the dutch are heading in the right direction, despite the challenges the superyacht sector faces due to the current geopolitical situation. We have a clear strategy of meeting these challenges head on, one which revolves around focusing on the dutch dnA of the maritime world and our rich heritage, moving forward based on these strengths. So, wherever you are reading this in the world, if you are considering a superyacht build or looking for suppliers, holland should certainly be your first port of call. I invite you to discover all that the members of the hISWA holland Yachting group can offer, both via their own websites and via hollandyachtinggroup.com where we have placed a wealth of stories that capture the essence of our offer.

Albert’s relationship with motorboats started at a young age too. he was fourteen when he joined his father’s yard; he still remembers hoping to earn enough to buy gloves to stave off the cold. The hakvoort family had been building boats since 1919 on a site that dates back to the 1300s. but Albert Sr. was determined to write history of his own, putting hakvoort Shipyards on the map with famous
superyachts like lady marina, lady duvera, perle bleue, JemaSa, Snowbird, mirgab V and Apostrophe. Today, the extended facilities create custom motor yachts up to 65m with Klaas and Albert Jr. at the helm. As one of the few genuine family yards left, Albert Sr. is sure of the secret behind hakvoort’s success: “We’ll never be the biggest yard, but we promise that every boat launched here will be the very best of its kind at the time.”

The design makes use of every millimetre, without compromising quality. The benefits of the Veth Intergrated L-drive – Compact design: extremely low mounting space requirements – Highly efficient – Silent; minimal noise production – Low in weight – Proven Veth Propulsion technology – Outstanding manoeuvrability thanks to the 360-degree thrust – Electric motor inside the ship; few vulnerable components underwater – Simple to install – Optimal flow of water thanks to Sharktail gearbox (for counter-rotating propeller)
concept (no-gear transmission inside the vessel), a water-cooled PM-motor (instead of an air-cooled asynchronous motor) and electrical controlling (instead of hydraulic controlling), guarantees even more noise reduction.”
High Efficiency The one-gear transmission results in a higher efficiency. On top of that, a PM motor, in particular at part-load, is more efficient than an asynchronous motor. “At 25% load, there is an improvement in efficiency of no less than 5.2%,” Mr Van der Jagt adds. As the L-drive is available with nozzle as well as with counter-rotating propellor, with a power range between 300kW to 1,325kW, the propulsion is suitable for a broad range of vessels. Mr Van der Jagt continues, “Our L-drive fits any type of vessel. So far, we have orders booked for offshore support vessels and superyachts and we are currently developing higher-powered units in order to extend the range of usability.”
Low Water Resistance For the counter-rotating propellers version, the patented Sharktail gearbox is used. Mr Van der Jag: “Together with Promarin, the tail has been further optimised. The asymmetrical shape ensures an optimal flow of water towards the second propeller. Combined with the flow caps which are affixed around the stationary parts of the thruster (the so-called fairing plates), it minimises the resistance.”
New Standard “The Veth Integrated L-drive is an excellent example of the combination of innovation and durability, resulting in a competitive, high-quality product. We are convinced that we have set the new standard in electric propulsion,” Mr Van der Jagt proudly concludes.

eaturing a full displacement steel hull and aluminium superstructure, with aluminium deck, Game Changer is powered by four mtu (16v 4000 m63l) 3,000hp diesel engines and comfortably cruises at 18 knots. her exterior is designed by the Damen team, who are also responsible for the entire engineering package, and she has a maximum range of 4,500 nautical miles at 16 knots. with a total of eleven yacht support vessels delivered to date or currently in build, Damen is by far the established leader in this rapidly developing niche. speaking earlier this year, Damen product Director, mark vermeulen, explained some of the reasons behind the growing phenomenon. “our clients want to go to exciting new destinations with less established superyacht infrastructure and they want to have more fun with larger tenders, larger helicopters and submersibles,” he said. “they also want to take more staff, guides, pilots and security personnel with them. Game Changer is the massive leap forward in capability that they need, but at a much lower cost than a larger yacht. plus, they get all the benefits of flexible operations and privacy. that’s why we call it the smart stretch.”
Safe Helicopter Passage launched in time for the 2017 summer season, and with Damen keen to promote its latest vessel, Game Changer made waves on london’s river thames in may, when she spent three days on the water to promote the shipyard’s yacht
support range of vessels. visitors enjoyed a full array of tenders, toys and a submersible, but Game Changer also prompted many serious discussions about safe helicopter operations. featuring a fully certified ly3 helideck suitable for charter/commercial use, and built to stringent offshore regulations, the idea is to enable owners to take larger helicopters on long range flights to their mother yachts day and night and land safely in a wider weather window. Game Changer’s owner can operate larger helicopters with 5-tonne maximum take-off weight and D14 rotor diameter, but the yacht has also been designed to enable the helicopter to be lowered into the hangar to protect it from the elements. this means the helicopter can be refuelled and available for takeoff without causing hassle, disruption and noise on the mother yacht. the hangar and refuelling systems – including Jet a-1 fuel tanks holding 10,000 litres – are built to high safety and fire-

fighting standards “Game Changer made a big impression on the owners, captains, brokers and designers who joined us on board, particularly with its helicopter capability and all-weather protected hangar,” said amels Commercial Director rose Damen, who is also responsible for Damen’s yachting portfolio. “when it comes to superyacht helipad design and operation, many in the industry are re-examining accepted practice and rethinking the level of risk that we are asking owners to accept for their family and friends. Game Changer really offers the ultimate yachting solution for professional helicopter operations.”

A vast range of tenders and toys are stored on board.
New Phenomenon Based on Damen’s patented and proven Sea Axe range of offshore vessels, and reaching a top speed of 22 knots, Game Changer embodies – as her name suggests – the next step for owners who wish to fully enjoy exciting new destinations off the beaten track with a selection of toys, tenders, helicopters and submersibles. She provides the massive leap forward in capability that larger mother ships are requiring these days, including staff accommodation (22 crew, as well as accommodation for helicopter pilots, submersible pilots, dive guides and security officers), provisions, equipment, diesel, and most impressively, a 110m2 dive centre decompression chamber that also doubles up as extra storage space. The extra space for heli and tender fuel is also more than handy, considering Game Changer also holds a big limo tender for shore trips, a large open top tender/chase boat, a submersible, and a dive support tender with an enclosed cabin. With 250m2 of open deck space for tenders and toys, Game Changer’s large deck crane makes logistics and handling simple, fast and safe, while her purpose-built yachting features and quality finish give her added appeal. “[The Thames visit] was a great opportunity to offer a closer look at the yacht support concept – which is still a relatively new

phenomenon in the industry,” said Mark Vermeulen. “A yacht support vessel is a massive leap forward in capability for the growing number of owners who want to do more with more equipment, more toys and more staff, and our vessels are perfectly equipped to support wide-ranging superyacht operations.” “Being so close to London – Tower Bridge is just 150 miles from AMELS – makes visiting the city very easy,” Rose Damen added. “London is an important superyacht centre in its own right with a large number of clients, as well as the brokerage community. We really noticed that when visitors came on board to judge the solution for themselves, they left feeling very enthusiastic about all the possibilities that a yacht support vessel opens. Last year we successfully exhibited a yacht support vessel in Fort Lauderdale and we hope to bring another vessel to Monaco later this year.” i. www.yacht-support.nl i. www.damen.com I. www.amels.com

Having our own furniture manufacturing plant allows us to close the gap between project management and assembly. Expansion for All the family-owned company has spent the past 20 years specialising in project development within the yacht new build and refit industry as well as the luxury residential outfitting sector. in 2014, the decision was made to create a more streamlined process. Construction of the new production site officially began in may 2016, with three of the existing buildings adapted, and an additional production shed measuring 2,300m2 built. its current facilities now include 9,000m2 of production and logistic facilities, as well as 2,700m2 of office and exhibition space. “due to the streamlined processes, we are setting the next step for our company’s future. when every part of the supply chain comes from a single source, we can approach our customers‘ needs in a more flexible, and more efficient way – something that is incredibly important in this sector,” comment joint managing directors, theresa Ludwiger-List and josef Payerhofer. the two managing directors emphasise the importance of involving the region in the development of the facility, having chosen to establish the facilities in the municipality of bad erlach, approximately 50km south of the austrian capital city of vienna. the expansion of the site is not only extremely important for the company itself, but also for the region as it will create jobs. having officially opened its doors in june 2017, the new facility started with the production of furnishings, such as high-quality furniture, ceilings and wall panels. due to the integration of the whole workforce under one roof, jobs were created and diversified – and the company has grown as a result. “within the past two years, our staff has increased from 95 to 165 employees, thus rising by 60%. new recruits include craftsmen, such as carpenters, painters, surface technicians, upholsterers and production engineers as well as Cad engineers,” explain Ludwiger-List and Payerhofer. List GC currently has eight newbuild projects under construction and many

refits underway, as well as plans to further expand the activities within the refitting and residential industries in the future.
Under One Roof from now on, all processes along the entire value chain will be joined together under one roof and one single management, which will allow List GC to offer everything from a single source. this gives it a tremendous advantage when competing globally, where flexibility and customer needs are a top priority. in addition, the new plant is focused on producing exquisite interiors that are then ready to be installed on private yachts as well as in residences and apartments. mr Payerhofer explains: “having our own furniture manufacturing plant allows us to close the gap between project management and assembly. everything can come from a single source, which allows us to respond to customer needs more flexibly.”

iraver is a name known across sectors and countries as the modern pioneers in glass. whether it be in the yacht, automotive, architectural or industrial spheres, the italian family-owned company tackles problems and delivers innovative solutions for the benefit of its clients. the company’s reputation for determination and teamwork is summed up by the albert einstein dictum: “there is a stronger driving force than steam, electricity and atomic energy – the will.” Viraver has not only the will to succeed but also the will to strive for technological innovation, and to do so daily. Viraver sets the bar high and meets its lofty targets thanks to ongoing product research and development, a deep understanding of the various markets and the bespoke approach to meeting customers’ needs for which the company is well known.
Chemical Strengthening Padova-based Viraver is a company of, and for, the ‘can-do’ y generation, as befits a business that was founded on a wave of technology and optimism in the year 2000. so, how does a new glass business for a new millennium prove itself? one recent development unique to Viraver perfectly sums up the company’s approach to finding new solutions to age-old problems; the chemical strengthening of glass. thermal toughening is the accepted way of treating large glass surfaces, but it poses problems, including the inability to solve optical effects due to stress distribution on glass. the answer is chemical strengthening. by

using this process, glass plates can be produced without any optical alteration such as distortions, wavelength retardations or superficial ‘footprints’. Additionally, the mechanical resistance of chemicallystrengthened glass can be achieved at almost two and a half times that of thermally tempered glass, and seven times that of annealed glass resistance. Viraver’s process for chemically-strengthened glass also results in a product that is far superior in terms of resistance, including thermic, climate, static and dynamic forces, and vibrations, to name but a few.
Problem Solving The problem with chemically-strengthened glass to date has been the size limit of plates able to be treated. Viraver has overcome this obstacle with a breakthrough that will revolutionise the supply of large plates of chemicallystrengthened glass, just as global market demand for it is growing. To meet this demand, Viraver is now building a new production line which has the capacity to treat glass plates with a maximum size of 8m by 3.21m. From September 2017, Viraver will boast the largest, most modern and efficient production plant for the chemical strengthening of glass in the world. The new process involves several stages, all monitored in real-time by the quality control team. Glass plates in extra-jumbo sizes are forged for Viraver manufacturing plants, all of which have been designed to achieve the highest levels of optical quality. Glass is cut, moulded or bent, as the application requires, before chemical strengthening takes place. Other processes may follow, including silkscreen printing, the insertion of encapsulated materials and autoclave lamination. Lamination key phases take place in extraclean-room conditions to guarantee the purity of the finished product. According to Marco Mazzorolo, Viraver Technology’s Vice President and General Director, applying technology to overcome a problem like this is the result of Viraver’s determination to innovate, with the resultant breakthrough destined to have big effects on the use of chemically-strengthened glass across sectors in the future. “Our new plant will allow us to satisfy a demand that, until now, no single company has been able to fulfil,” said Mazzorolo.
Working Together This is just one example of how Viraver is delivering solutions and underpinning future growth with innovation and quality. At Viraver, all

departments work together for a holistic approach. For example, R&D, production and sales team are all located in the same Viraver technology centre, covering an area of 15,000m2, where every new project goes through careful technical and structural examination. Viraver uses the same rigorous quality procedures with its other main business, polycarbonates. The latest generation equipment at Viraver ensures both the purity of the material and high geometric precision. A special surface hardening treatment provides excellent scratch resistance which, together with the material’s lightness and strength,
makes Viraver polycarbonates particularly suitable for applications such as racing cars. A racing car, yacht or an application within the aerospace, architectural or industrial areas, whatever the need, Viraver has, over the past seventeen years, proven itself to be an innovator with a bespoke approach to every project. Whether it is glass with the most complex curvatures imaginable for a yacht window, a super-slim but highly resilient windscreen or showroom display, or a functional element of a piece of furniture, all have been perfectly crafted by Viraver, the pioneering glass professionals.

hen a piece of equipment is designed and built to handle a yacht’s tenders and toys, such as a deck crane system, the idea is that the equipment should last reasonably close to the life of the vessel, given adequate service and maintenance. to achieve this admiral goal, the savvy ship builder wants the crane provider to design and develop the equipment specifically for the vessel to ensure that it fits the operational parameters of the vessel. in addition, the builder will want a company that can get the equipment through its warranty period: manufacturing, delivery, installation and commissioning. a company that will make sure it’s working properly, integrated to the vessel, and completed on budget. But what about product service years down the road? Building equipment is one thing, it’s quite another for a vendor to offer annual service, make necessary repairs, maintain adequate parts inventory and maintain an exhaustive engineering-drawing library, all of which are key service and maintenance resources that are going to be critical ten or fifteen years into the vessel’s service life. ideally, the ship builder wants an equipment provider with a knowledgeable and skilled support organisation long after everybody who worked on building the vessel in the shipyard no longer remembers details of the project.
foundation for a truly qualified co-maker is a commitment to the ‘cradle-to-grave’ concept. a company with a long-term mindset, and the financial and operational strength built on years of experience to engage in a long-term relationship with the builder first, and the enduser second, will offer many advantages. many companies have that manufacture equipment, but not many of them have a full programme committed to design, engineering, manufacturing, installation and training; nor do many invest in a service department properly positioned to support the vessel throughout its service life anywhere in the world. some manufacturers just fire and forget; they build a piece of equipment, send it to the shipyard, and then they’re on to building the next piece of equipment. that does not bring much value to the user or consumer ten years after the purchase. the co-maker, however, takes responsibility for the entire product system and sees it all the way through its service life.
The Way of the Co-Maker co-makers allow ship builders to tap a single company to design, build, install and maintain sophisticated and expensive vessel systems. co-makers help ship builders avoid the ‘herding cats’ scenario, common when employing traditional, vertically oriented equipment companies. Without a qualified co-maker, in our crane example, the builder may be faced with sourcing the crane from one company, the watertight hatches from a second company, the hydraulic power unit that powers the crane and hatches from a third company, and finally engaging a naval architect to do the design and installation interface of the components. that is four different players, all of whom must communicate well with each other and who, often, may be competitors. With a co-maker, the ship builder works through a single company that can bring all the equipment and technical disciplines to the project as a package under one umbrella. the whole system is

FOCUS ON USA streamlined when you go to a single source, and the ship builder is not reliant on the performance of a host of independent subcontractors.
Partnering Solutions Partnering with a vetted co-maker for integrated system development can yield long-term benefits and cost savings. By working from the project onset with the design team — the naval architect, yacht designer, and the shipyard — the co-maker can ensure adequate vessel space and structural capacity to allow the equipment to operate at 100% of its capacity once it’s installed. the alternative, where the co-maker is brought in after construction has started (or worse case, after the boat has been completed) may lead to serious compromises and financial implications to accommodate for the preexisting structure parameters. compromises often lead to additional costs to the customer, because instead of being able to use a conventional crane to do the job, a highly customised piece of equipment may be required to fit the space that’s left. By involving the co-maker early in the design process, the options are much greater. systems can be installed that use 100% of their design capacity and performance without the need for costly modifications to the equipment or the vessel structure.
Two Distinct Interfaces a good co-maker will look at two distinct interfaces for equipment and performance. the first is an internal interface; how a piece of equipment functions, its performance and safety characteristics, and its suitability for a given work load and operating environment. the second interface is how this piece of equipment interfaces with the vessel’s systems. for example, a crane system that lives below deck underneath deck hatches must interface with the vessel’s load-bearing support structure, the hydraulic power unit and controls, the watertight deck hatches, and the deck hatch framing to ensure watertight integrity when the boat goes out to sea and starts getting hammered by big waves. it all comes together as a total system; one can’t stand without the other. a winning scenario is where a completely integrated system is part of the initial vessel design to deliver optimal performance.
example, the co-maker should have expertise in hydraulic motion and control technologies to engineer systems with computers and programmable logic controls to make a crane nearly bullet proof. the equipment can be programmed so that the crane is capable of functioning in any position, under full load, while not causing any damage to the crane or the surrounding structure. integrated technology between components will prevent damage such as accidentally closing the hydraulic hatches on the deployed crane. technology isn’t always the complete answer to extending service life, though. the competent co-maker will develop and deliver comprehensive operator training to ensure safe and efficient use of the equipment. as one industry expert explained it, “sometimes the best computer is the one between the ears”. this two-step process ensures a combination of engineering, technology and common sense. a good co-maker has made a substantial investment building up a strong service team and support organisation. this long-term commitment to product service and support allows the co-maker to establish any product
protocols and inspections, five-year inspections required for classed equipment (such as solas) and re-certifications. co-maker service support can relieve the ship builder of on-going maintenance and warranty obligations. the ship builder can remain confident that their customers are receiving excellent maintenance and service long after the vessel is commissioned. this ‘cradle-to-grave’ philosophy allows the co-maker to deliver a turnkey package to the ship builder, and then to the owner or operator once the vessel is commissioned. the co-maker understands that while the shipyard is initially his customer through design and engineering, manufacturing, installation, commissioning, and training, ultimately it is the end-user — the yacht’s captain, chief engineer, deck officer, or owner’s representative — who is going to be his customer in the decades ahead. how does a builder choose a co-maker to partner with? Beyond the demonstrated technical and production expertise, a commitment to cradle-to-grave support, and service for its products, one of the best indicators of a company’s longevity is looking at
warranty a customer desires: one, two, even five-year product warranties. of course, there are costs associated with multiyear warranties, but it is a reasonable, managed risk on the part of the co-maker because of their long-term commitment to the supplied system.
how long they’ve been in the business. have they demonstrated financial stability and endurance? are they a reputable organisation with hard-won tenure? are the successful shipyards using them for their projects? given the substantial expenditures made on large yacht and ship systems and the importance of continuous equipment operations, the wise choice is the co-maker that has demonstrated endurance, rather than a company that is heretoday-gone-tomorrow.
Turnkey Packages in partnership with strong warranties, the comaker is also able to offer general maintenance service contracts extending out decades to cover the product’s entire service life. this includes everyday maintenance, annual service

Early Collaboration Bringing the co-maker into the project early yields other benefits too. early collaboration allows for the engineering of a product that will successfully accomplish a set of given tasks applying technology to improve efficiency, reliability, and safety. With the above crane

cost. In the years to come, the complexity of the systems and their inability to be easily serviced can potentially ruin an owner’s precious time on board their yacht. On the flip side, excessive technical space allocation detracts from a yacht’s primary purpose, which is to provide luxurious living, entertainment and relaxation space for its owner and guests.
it is a key objective and challenge for all stakeholders involved to find that ‘sweet spot’; the seemingly confrontational process of finding this is in fact a very healthy debate and, if approached correctly by those involved, will deliver this sweet spot. The most effective way to approach this is by collaboration with the right people at the right time. Relevant, digestible and project specific technical guidance should be supplied to the designer ideally from the very first pen/mouse/ pencil stroke. The first step in providing technical guidance is to understand the intended use of the yacht and the client’s views on cost, risk and new technology. Once this has been established, the basic traditional naval architecture and marine engineering attributes of the design can be configured.
The Sweet Spot
Early Stages
Most projects within the large yacht industry exist somewhere between these two points and
At this early stage of the design, there will be little time to conduct detailed engineering to

t is perhaps stereotypical, but what commonly follows the initial designer/shipyard meeting is often a confrontational process in which the designer presses for more luxury space and the engineers push for more technical space. The outcome and balance of these discussions is vital for the success of the project. If the project is squeezed and reduction in technical space is excessive, then even the most basic routing of services and provision of maintenance access becomes a miraculous feat of engineering adding significantly to time and

NAVAL ARCHITECTURE determine the size required for engine rooms and technical spaces and certainly not for more of the detailed spatial requirements of air conditioning, storage and AV/IT. It is also likely that the design will be evolving rapidly, therefore quick, simple and reliable methods of determining space allocation are required. The approach to defining this space relies on a mixture of basic drawings of major equipment and parametric information, derived from similar yachts. Parametric analysis is only half the solution, however, as the key attributes of the yacht versus the yachts within the database need to be understood from first principles. For example, for a new yacht requiring IMO Tier III exhaust after treatment, additional space will be required within the engine room compared to older yachts. Furthermore, the extent of the use of glass in the exterior design and of structural overhangs will all have a major effect on the size of the HVAC equipment. These factors need to be assessed and evaluated based on first principles.
From the Inside Out When examining parametric data for 60-120m superyachts, it is somewhat striking that the ratio of technical space to ‘useable space’ (space for both crew and guest accommodation, as well as amenities) remains fairly constant across a wide range of yachts with Gross Tonnage (GT) varying from 1,000 to 8,000. The area split is typically 25% technical space (engine, generator rooms, exhaust casings, HVAC rooms, pump rooms etc.) to 75% useable space. This ratio will vary between yachts with some yachts having a 20/80 or 30/70 technical versus useable space ratio. The choice of propulsion system is the biggest driver behind these variations. Yachts with high installed power versus GT require more technical space, as do diesel electric and hybrid configurations. Other factors include the form factor of machinery spaces. Well-proportioned spaces in sensible areas of the yacht can make best use of space but conversely, a very clever design that uses unusual areas of the yacht for large equipment can make good use of otherwise underused space.
Valuing Space Adding non-typical design features in the positioning of technical space is likely to result in space usage which may skew the statistics, i.e. tender bays and guest areas in traditional engine room positions. However, statistical comparison of whether one design is better or worse than the next based purely on the distribution of area is somewhat of a misguided
www.s u p e r y a c h t - i n dustr y.c om
BMT Nigel Gee.indd 61
approach, the design should be appraised holistically against its original design intent. When it comes to looking at what makes up the 25% of technical space, there is a large variation in how different shipyards and designs use this space. For example, HVAC space can vary between 2% up to a significant 8%. This will vary on the type of system i.e. fan coil or centralised between small and large yachts, the effect of specification, and glazing is hugely important. However, by careful use of existing data and an understanding of the source data, it is possible to achieve reasonable early approximations of the total required HVAC areas. What is harder to implement is an agreement on what the acceptable individual Air Handling Unit room sizes are or their exact positions, without undertaking detailed HVAC calculations. However, in taking this approach, it’s reasonable to account for perhaps 80% of the required rooms at a very initial design phase.
Usable Space What is also interesting between different yacht designs is what is done with the useable space. The area given over to crew accommodation, galleys, food storage, tender bays, etc. will generally account for another 25% of the yacht’s space, but again, it will vary from approximately 15% to 30%. In general, the space for toys and tenders remains consistent across most yachts at around 5%. There are, however, the outliers where some yachts are dedicating up to 10% of their space to toys and others with minimal storage.
Storage is Key The above points do indicate another point in yacht design; whilst the owner’s wishes can be very different depending on his or her personality, culture and planned use of the yacht, the fact that the average values are
closely related with few outliers means that not many owners stray far from fairly standard configurations in terms of the primary yacht layout. We are either stuck in a design rut or nobody wants to be that different. This leaves, on average, 50% of the yacht’s available space dedicated solely to its intended use of guest accommodation and entertainment. In the 100m+ yacht range, a 2% variation could mean an extra cabin. Probably the most overlooked metric in the useful operation of the yacht comes from one of its smallest categories – storage. This will be storage for deck equipment, furniture, cleaning supplies and spare parts. The most important factor in initial design is to make sure that this number is above zero! For most yachts, this number will be approximately 2% of available space.
Location, Location, Location It is also important to understand that this is not just about space, but also location. Equipment location needs to consider the main vertical fire zones of the yacht, its potential watertight subdivision and means of escape, etc. Also, the proximity of HVAC equipment to fresh air and to the compartments it serves is vital. The design of technical space will need to consider the integration of key design features such as beach clubs, swimming pools and tender garages, etc. By taking an early collaborative approach between designers, naval architects and marine engineers, it can be expected that the project can arrive at contract with a General Arrangement close to the sweet spot with all parties satisfied. Whilst further ‘robust’ discussions can no doubt be expected as the project develops into its detailed design phases, the likelihood of the client receiving the yacht that he wants, on time, is greatly improved when building on a solid foundation.

ithium is increasingly gaining popularity. No wonder: in a market that usually asks for the maximum, why settle for anything less when it comes to energy storage? In the marine sector, the most important things to consider when it comes to energy storage are obviously weight, performance and safety. Super B’s lithium iron phosphate batteries are well known because of their incredible small size – one third of a conventional battery – and enormous weight saving of up to 80% compared to traditional batteries. In addition to that, they offer a maximum performance with a high charge and discharge current, a long service life and low self-discharge. And when it comes to safety, the
exclusive safety technology of the products guarantee the batteries are ready to operate on a temperature range of -20°C to +60°C without any problems. The bespoke casing and integrated battery management system further increase safety and durability.
Marine Applications Because of the in-depth knowledge of the marine market and the easy installation of the battery, the Super B batteries have been used in a variety of marine applications over the past years. The company offers a modular product, to respond to the different yacht market requests, and to have the opportunity to be
flexible and to develop a proper layout of applications. In the Italian market, for instance, the batteries have been placed in several 30m to 50m yachts. Other worldwide examples of projects are the ferry, Happiness (Asia’s first retrofitted hybrid ferry), the Vendée Globe boat of Conrad Colman and the British Columbia Ferry hybrid. Super B expects further growth when it comes to placing Super B batteries in marine applications and keeps on developing new products for this market.

superyacht showtime season starts Summer time has come to an end for most people in the superyacht industry, and I hope everyone has enjoyed their summer break. A summer vacation is always a good moment to relax, and have fun with your family and loved ones for a couple of weeks. One other advantage is you have the opportunity to recharge your ‘battery’ for the second half of the year. For the superyacht industry, the second half of the year is ‘showtime’. The major superyacht shows take place in the latter half, and are great opportunities to meet with clients, investigate new leads, hear about the latest projects, network at events, and of course, attend a cocktail party or two. The season kick starts with the 40th anniversary of the Cannes Yachting Festival, Europe’s largest floating boat show held on 12 to 17 September at Cannes Vieux Port and Port Pierre Canto, Cannes. In celebration of this milestone, the show organiser, Reed Expositions France, has unveiled a new visual identity for the 2017 event, which will see a “shower of silver stars adorning the drapery to merge into the boat’s wake, and highlight the ‘pleasure of sailing’”. Taking place on 27 to 30 September the
27th edition of the Monaco Yacht Show remains the pinnacle of events on the annual yachting calendar. Set in the iconic Port Hercules of the Principality of Monaco, over 125 of the world’s most extraordinary, one-off superyachts – both sail and motor – built by the best shipyards in the business, gather on the French Riviera to network and innovate. Not content to rest on its laurels, and exemplifying the industry’s continued strength, the 2017 show is set to unveil a staggering 45-plus new superyacht launches to a growing global audience. In autumn, Fort Lauderdale, Florida, the ‘Yachting Capital of the World’ will host the 58th Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show on 1 to 5 November. And one week later the METS trade show will take place from 14 until 16 November 2017 in Amsterdam. I look forward to seeing you at the shows.
For the superyacht industry, the second half of the year is ‘showtime’.
