And our selection of special features includes cAt’s custom audio systems (page 54), and tijssen elektro’s multidisciplinary provision of services, including its work on supersloop ngoni (page 20). And, of course, we preview the upcoming palma superyacht show, which is stepping it up a gear by incorporating the entire basin. our regular instalments of people pages, news in brief and outfitters will keep you up-to-date with everything else that is new in the world of superyachts, and I hope you enjoy this year’s first read. New Amels 180 Sold with Summer 2018 Delivery
Nobiskrug and German Naval Yards Kiel Implement CostFact
Dutch yacht builder Amels announced in February the sale of a new 55m Amels 180 from its Limited Editions range. The superyacht, with an extended 28m sun deck, six luxury suites and three folding balconies, is scheduled for delivery in summer 2018. The Tim Heywood-designed exterior is complemented by a contemporary, fresh interior by Laura Sessa with classic high gloss finishes. “This new yacht beautifully highlights the advantages of our Limited Editions approach to yacht building,” comments Amels’ Commercial Director Rose Damen. Nobiskrug and German Naval Yards Kiel have announced their adoption of the cost management system CostFact, to assist with the cost estimation and planning of complex and challenging projects. The CostFact software system supports cost management throughout all shipbuilding phases, beginning with the early phases of design and engineering, to the calculations that accompany production, and finally to the analysis of the completed project, and has been developed in close cooperation with several of the world’s leading shipyards.
Game Changer Sold and Back at Damen for Customisation Dutch shipbuilder Damen has announced the sale of its fourth 70m Yacht Support vessel, Game Changer, and says the sale proves the ongoing demand for large yachting solutions for worldwide adventures, helicopter and dive operations. “It’s exciting to see how these clients are using Damen vessels to realise their vision of yachting,” notes Rose Damen, Commercial Director. “… it’s very important that our vessels go far beyond commercial ship standards and that’s exactly where our experience and yachting knowhow sets us apart.” Game Changer is currently at the Damen Shipyards Gorinchem yard for modifications.

impressive 30% increase in the number of participating yachts compared to last year’s event. as the world’s most renowned yards see the average length of the superyachts on their commission books grow, so too do international brokerage houses note more and more clients ‘shopping’ for larger yachts. The first quarter of 2017 was good for 10 x 50m-plus brokerage sales, which was a considerable improvement on years gone by. december alone saw no less than six 50m-plus yachts change hands. This growing trend in the new build and brokerage market will also be reflected in the sixth edition of the Palma Superyacht Show. a larger selection of bigger boats will be showcasing their gleaming paintwork and inviting aft deck areas over an extended exhibition area. Both newbie exhibitors and companies who have been taking part since the very beginning will launch their latest products.
One of the motor yachts that will be showing off her ample deck space and alluring sun loungers to possible new owners this year is fast performer Ornella, a 32m Leopard for sale with Fraser. She was extensively refitted in 2015 and, aside from her sleek new look, counts many notable features, such as her four luxuriously styled cabins, and flybridge with Jacuzzi. For those looking for sea-going luxury, capable of offering relaxing holiday experiences one week and competing in the world’s most exciting regattas the next, a yacht like the beautiful 40m J Class Rainbow is a good option. Built to the hull lines of the original 1934 America’s Cup winner, this spectacular J is for sale with Yachting Partners International.
Refit & Repair In addition to a larger selection of yachts, the Refit & Repair area, which debuted last year, will again be playing host to some of the biggest names in the yachting industry. These include Precision Marine and Jongkind to name but a few. What’s more, the upcoming edition of the Refit & Repair will feature 25% more stands compared to 2017. As the show is set in what is arguably the Mediterranean’s prime spot when it comes to the refit and repair of superyachts, it comes as no surprise that, also

Company CEO Diego Colón explained: “As an event which features mostly charter yachts, and is located in one of yachting’s preferred cruising destinations, the Palma Superyacht Show fulfils all our main criteria. We have attended the show since its first year and we will continue to support its growth in the future. The newly added area, focused on companies in the Refit & Repair business, has already proven to be a success, and adds extra value for a company such as ours.”
firm. Consultant James Brill commented: “A2B Maritime is excited to be exhibiting in the show this year. It is great to have the opportunity to explain the type of projects we work on and how our project management services ensure new build and refit projects run smoothly.” This year’s Palma Superyacht Show emphasises its diversity and growing degree of excellence. Organised by the industry, and thus tailored to meet the industry’s specific needs, the show will not only provide yachting’s professionals with a perfect setting to showcase all they have to offer, but also many opportunities to make exciting new business connections. All of this, of course, against a backdrop of blue skies and spring sunshine, with the show’s signature laidback atmosphere to boot.
Bigger and Better Even though the aforementioned 80 unique superyachts are the show’s biggest attraction, 75 shoreside exhibitors will also be jostling for visitors’ attention. Compared to 2017, the forthcoming event will accommodate 20% more

esigned by Dubois Naval Architects and featuring an innovative interior by Rick Baker Ltd, 58m Ngoni is a radical highperformance sloop, and one of the world’s largest sailing yachts. Built by Dutch shipyard Royal Huisman and launched in 2017, her sleek and beautiful exterior belies a wealth of technical engineering necessary to make this fast and furious yacht possible. Pairing a huge, powerful and advanced rig with a slender and easily-driven hull, Ngoni is not only one of the last projects from the legendary late Ed Dubois, she also became something of a dream project for all involved. Ngoni acquired her unusual nickname – The Beast – from the owner’s brief, in which he stated “Build me a beast. Don’t build me a sheep in wolf’s clothing. This has to be an edgy and innovative weapon; fast and furious”. Tasked with designing a yacht for an owner with a serious passion for sailing, Dubois’ initial concept comprised a long and slender sloop with a plumb bow, sculpted aerodynamic superstructure and elegant beach deck, dominated by a towering sloop rig. The owner immediately challenged Dubois to further push the boundaries of naval architecture, and the result was Ngoni’s innovative reverse sheer; her defining characteristic. More than just an exercise in creative expression, the reverse sheer holds the key to Ngoni’s required structural stiffness, delivering 12% more strength and load resistance than a conventional sheer using the same materials. Speaking in 2015 to INHUIS magazine about the reverse sheer concept, Dubois said: “Think of a sloop as a bow and arrow: the bow is the hull, the arrow is the mast and the string is the forestay and backstay. You can imagine that tension creates an awful lot of

bending moment, which is fine if you can compensate with a strong, deep beam in the structural sense, but the Beast has a relatively low freeboard and shallow beam with no structural superstructure. Then you make the situation worse by making holes in the deck for tender bays, sail lockers and hatches – metal that would usually resist the compression in the deck. You can overcome that by adding a substantial sheer strake and Ngoni has a top plate of solid 35mm aluminium that acts like a ring beam around the hull, but it’s still a struggle to come up with the required stiffness. So, then I started thinking about a reverse sheer, which is much like the structure of a bridge where the road is convex to resist the compression created by the weight of the traffic. we ran it through our structural analysis program and suddenly we had a 12 per cent increase in stiffness for the same weight. It’s something you sometimes see on high performance boats like Samurai, but this is the first time I’ve designed a sailing yacht with a reverse sheer.”
Technical Innovation As an experienced owner who likes to helm, the brief was precise. The owner wanted an exciting contemporary yacht that combined exemplary performance, handling and seakeeping with luxurious amenity, optimising the hull volume. His ‘less is more’ philosophy demanded a highly minimalistic approach, seeking to maximise reliability by minimising complexity; and to enhance elegance and aerodynamic efficiency through a clean, clutter-free aesthetic. He insisted on steering that was light, yet firm and responsive. The wheel had to give him the true feel of the boat under sail. All of this, within a luxurious and comfortable setting, and one in which the crew can safely and efficiently operate. In addition to her dramatically inflected sheerline, Ngoni’s key features include a lifting keel that allows her draft to be a meagre 5.3m, an aluminium hull capable of reaching a maximum speed of 17.5 kts, extremely powerful carbon rig and foils, and curved optically-perfect glass that surrounds the main deck. Keen to maintain contact with the water, the owner rejected a sun deck; the result is a near 360-degree view from almost anywhere within the main deck structure. The forward end of the glass deckhouse wraps

around a navigation and communications console on starboard and a service pantry on port. In the centre of the open area is the top of the massive lifting keel box doing double duty as a chart table and staging meal service from the galley below. The 853m2 square-top mainsail is notable not just for its load-reducing halyard lock but for the innovation allowing the square-top and its supporting diagonal batten to detach automatically and furl neatly into the styled performance boom with minimal intervention from the crew. while hoisting, the diagonal batten attaches automatically too. To further reduce weight and drag, Ngoni is equipped with continuous carbon shrouds from deck to masthead (70% weight reduction over conventional Nitronic rod rigging) and internal D-Tang connections where diagonal stays meet the mast tube – thus also removing the visual clutter of turnbuckles. The development of the rig was a major project in its own right and its success is a tribute to the highly productive collaboration between spar builder Rondal (Royal Huisman’s sister company), sailmaker North Sails and carboLink, together with Dubois Naval Architects and the shipyard team.
As an experienced owner who likes to helm, the brief was for a contemporary yacht that combined performance, handling and seakeeping with luxurious amenitiers.
Seamless Flow The expansive teak foredeck shelters a large tender, a crane, spa pool, sail locker and cooled waste locker. Aft of the foredeck, the towering carbon mast is one of the world’s three largest one-piece spars ever built, all three having been manufactured by Rondal. Ngoni’s full air-draft is 75m. The sculpted low-profile superstructure centres the design with elegant understatement; a gleaming authoritative black. Electrically operated sliding glass wind breakers ensure the perfect, flexible outdoor environment whatever the conditions at sea or at anchor, and a highly stable boarding platform at tender level is linked to the deck by boarding steps, offering easy access to the deck amidships, adjacent to the deck house. Importantly, however, another core aspect of the brief was to avoid predictable assumptions that the styling, colours or finish of the exterior would inevitably inform the sensual experience below. far from a traditional yacht interior, Ngoni’s has flowing curves interspersed with organic detailing and unique materials. Breaking up the

“masculine feel” of the interior are bright pops of bold colour. The use of vivid resins, combined with sculpted metal surfaces gives an overall fluid feel, interspersed with bespoke veneers, marble and onyx to help maintain unique identities in each room.
Individual Design Interior designers Rick Baker and Paul Morgan consciously avoided giving the yacht a theme, but rather chose to make the different areas highly individual: “The yacht is a total one off, with a unique design by Ed Dubois, and the interiors had to reflect the same state of the art design. It was important to us to not let the craft feel like a hotel, and to avoid repetition in the cabins, so we have selected some specialist finishes which would not normally be associated with a contemporary yacht. These include artisan resin panels and metalised spray and lacquered textured effects.” Owners’ and guest accommodation is accessed via a curving staircase from the deck house to the guest lobby area. spacious study with its own bathroom and a large gym with an opening hull port in the topsides. This area is flooded by natural light, as is the entire yacht interior. There is a superbly appointed twin guest cabin with spacious bathroom to port and a double guest cabin featuring a Japanese bath to starboard. Both feature high quality exotic veneers, marbles and resin finishes. Large, rectangular ports offer superb natural lighting by day. For a 58m long sloop, Ngoni weighs in at an astonishing 396GT, considerably less than other yachts of her size – a decision made for the benefit of having an all-out performance machine. The compromise however comes with a reduced interior volume, but for all involved on the project this is a minor sacrifice, including the owner, who far from wanting to relax on board said at the outset of the project: “I want to get off the wheel after a day of sailing feeling knackered from the excitement of hands-on fast sailing.” The marriage of performance with luxury has certainly been achieved with Ngoni.

Navigation and Communication equipment The navigation and communication equipment was a huge part of Tijssen elektro’s work on ngoni, with a lot involved to install and deliver the complete package of navcom equipment. The equipment is installed at several spots throughout the yacht: the helm stations, navigation and communications console on starboard, captain’s cabin, officer cabin and crew mess. The yacht also contains IpTv, which offers the ability to stream source media continuously. The image quality of the Ip television adapts to the internet bandwidth that is available. The owner wished to view his favourite Tv channels without relying on vsaT, so a special configuration bundles 3g and 4g broadband while close to land via a booster mounted on the masthead.

t the time of speaking to Mr Phil Popham in September 2017, Sunseeker’s forward order book was in a strong position; 90% of capacity sold for 2017, and 50% already sold for 2018. A raft of new models had recently been unveiled by the boat builder, including the hugely successful Manhattan 52 (Sunseeker’s fastest selling model ever), the Predator 57 MK II, Manhattan 66 and the new 76 Yacht. The Predator 57 MKII is an evolution of the popular Predator 57, which has been a leader in its segment since its introduction in January 2015, while the 95 Yacht’s innovative layout, striking lines and fresh design direction have become synonymous with the company’s next generation of larger yachts. Buoyed by its recent resurgence, Sunseeker is on a path of innovation and development, exemplified by its announcement in January 2018 of its collaboration with Red Bull Advanced Technologies on a new Sportboat with Formula 1 technology, due to be delivered in 2019.
So, 2017 has been a busy year for Sunseeker, with some very successful new models launched? Yes, and that follows on from a record number last year when we produced five new boats, including all three that are here at the 2017 Monaco Yacht Show. This year, we

started off with the launch of the Manhattan 66, Sport 68 MKII, Predator 57 MK II, and the 76 Yacht – which launched at Southampton. We’ve had a tremendous reaction to them – we’ve sold 20 of the 76 Yacht before we’ve even shown it, which is basically a year’s production. We have certainly benefitted from all our new product introductions, and we’re 50% sold for 2018 already. We’re looking at the strongest order bank we’ve ever had, and that’s in a business that is 50 years old.
What’s fuelling what – the launches fuelling the growth, or the growth fuelling the new launches? It’s a combination of both – the brand’s very strong, it’s a pioneering brand – but the product investment we’ve been making over the past two to three years, and continue to make, is positive. It’s a good product at the right price, with brand heritage, and strong representation as well. We have a lot of dealers, many of whom have focused on the USA over the past couple of years, and who have proven our representation. We have new dealers in the Middle East, including Japan and South America, so we’ve probably taken on around ten new dealers, and fired a few who weren’t performing as well! If we’re providing a level of investment, and a great product, we expect them to

perform sales and after sales. But, the combination of all those things has really grown the business.
Tell me about the restructuring that has been taking place. I joined Sunseeker three years ago, and my role was really a ‘turnaround’ – to take the business from one that was losing money and hadn’t really recovered from the recession to one that is growing. My background is in the automotive industry, and I introduced some of the disciplines from my previous roles, which in effect built a whole new approach to our planning, governance, and process disciplining. I also appointed new people, including our Marketing director, Simon clare, and we have just appointed a new chief operating officer, Michael Straughan, who joins from Bentley Motors ltd. Both of those appointments are really important as we enter the next stage of growth. Michael has a tremendous background in Bentley, significantly increasing their production while maintaining that premium position and bespoke ability. It’s not just the business that is growing though, the boats themselves are getting bigger and bigger. We started life as small performance boats, day boats, and people bought Sunseekers because they would be the first to return to the marina and bag the best restaurant tables! over time we’ve kept that quality – all our boats are performance minded. But I think it’s also a combination of distinctive design – there is definitely a family resemblance
www.s u p e r y a c h t - i n dustr y.c om
Sunseeker.indd 23
there – as well as the ability to provide bespoke British craftsmanship. That blend makes us somewhat unique. As a business, we have definitely grown in size over the years, and we are now the biggest manufacturer in the world between 80 and 160ft. We’ve sold around 120 boats over 100ft, and it’s recognised that we’re actually now producing superyachts, albeit not custom manufacturing. As we’ve introduced some of the smaller boats, the Manhattan 52, 66 and 76 Yacht, we’ve introduced some superyacht features to them, such as beach clubs and a tremendous level of exterior space for entertaining. The 76 Yacht that replaces the 75 has 25% more external space – a big flybridge, bow area for entertaining, and rear area under stern. owners want privacy wherever they are. If they’re anchored at sea, they want to be up on the flybridge, if they’re tied up stern-to, the bow of the yacht makes for a great private place for entertaining, and when they’re in the sea playing with water toys, they want accessibility at the stern. So, we’ve tried to put superyacht features on much smaller boats.
You say you’re not a custom manufacturer, but is this something for the future? We certainly have the potential to go bigger, the 131 is the biggest boat we’ve made to date, although we have sold two 155s, but that’s not in production at the moment. The brand can go bigger, and we do have an existing manufacturing process. The 131 will go through four

different stages of build – it won’t stay in one place for two years – and the customer gets the benefit of that. The efficiencies in our production means that the 131 (40m) is a lot more affordable than other custom yachts. But, we will almost certainly build bigger in the next few years.
So, with so much change afoot, what would you say is Sunseeker’s USP now? We have a very distinctive brand, very well-known, and I think it’s that blend of performance, distinctive design and craftsmanship; those things together make us somewhat unique. We’re known for our wide window graphic on the sides of Sunseekers that create light airy spaces inside, but we’re also a pioneering brand – first to market with a lot of features – and we’d like to carry on doing that. The latest process that we have of trying to fit superyacht features on to smaller boats really focuses on the interiors as well.
we launch, we’ll have more and more modular ways of building it.
And you’re introducing different build methods?
So, what does the future hold for Sunseeker?
We’re looking at introducing more modular build and sub-assembly. At the moment boats are built from the ground up, so in a bid to constantly improve quality, modular building is the approach we’re now taking. We’ve invested a lot in our facilities to enable this, such as introducing staging rather than scaffolding, and making it a lot easier for our fitters to actually do their job. It means taking some of the skills out of the boat to be completed offsite. You can’t just introduce that on an existing design though, but for every new model that
We’re very much in our growth phase, the turnaround is good, we’re profitable – we went back into profit last year and we’ve been comfortably profitable in 2017 – and we’re well-funded. our shareholders are really pushing us to develop a growth plan, which we have already presented to the board, and received backing for the next five years to increase the product range and invest in new build facilities. We’ll add to the product range and replace every product that we’ve got in the next five years, so, big investment.

he Italian yachting industry is one of resilience. Buoyed by a raft of major players – the giant sheds of Benetti, Perini Navi, Rossinavi, VSY, Codecasa and Sanlorenzo dwarf the seafront shops and hotels in Viareggio – it has shown stamina in times of uncertainty and volatility. Now, the Italian Marine Industry Association (Ucina Confindustria Nautica – UCINA) is doing its part to further secure the future of the country’s marine activities by lobbying in favour of international promotion and development of the entire Italian recreational boating sector. At a conference held during Boot Dusseldorf in January 2018, the Association presented its latest efforts in co-operation with the Italian government to make the Italian marine industry more appealing to a global audience. One such initiative is the publication of a guidebook on Italian and EU yachting regulations named ‘Italy, Tax & Yachting’, which has been edited by UCINA in collaboration with the Italian Tax Authority. Detailing all the required tax, customs and legal obligations regarding recreational and commercial crafts within Italian national waters, the book is to be distributed by
ItalianYachtMasters – the Italian superyacht captains and naval officers association. The aim is to lay out all the measures that have been taken to make Italy a more economically competitive yachting market, and the ‘Bel Paese’ an even more attractive destination, compared to other Mediterranean and European countries.
Italian Nautical Code Released in November 2017, the new Italian Nautical Code (Codice della Nautica) includes simplified rules and regulations to make registering a boat or a yacht in Italy easier and more economically viable. Amongst the most important elements are the removal of limits for registering a yacht on the International Registry, a measure that brings significant fiscal advantages for commercial yachts, and the introduction of new simplified documents for vessels and crews. Compounding this development is the new Passenger Yacht Code for passenger vessels that can carry up to 36 guests, with these vessels now considered commercial yachts.

Tax Developments A number of new initiatives regarding Italian tax laws have been laid out with the aim of benefitting owners and guests within the yachting market, some of which have been formulated in direct response to UCINA’s requests, such as developments regarding Italian VAT exemptions for commercial vessels sailing on the ‘high seas’. The Italian Tax Authority has announced that navigation undertaken in international waters can be considered a cruise if it starts from and arrives in a country other than Italy, and if it begins from and ends in the same Italian port. Navigation undertaken to reposition a vessel or for technical reasons, such as a transfer without passengers or to arrive at a shipyard for repairs is considered differently. when it comes to using a yacht under construction in the high seas, a statement from the owner regarding their intent is all that is required to obtain VAT exemption, and so too regarding vessels that are used discontinuously, such as yachts that are for sale and that have changed owner or final use. In addition, in cases where a vessel is in port for over a year the latest form of active use is the form that will be used to calculate VAT, while a 10% VAT rate will be applied to vessels that dock in Italy up to a year, a measure that was taken after the abolition of the owner’s tax on recreational vessels both for private and for commercial use. Regarding foreigners who
become Italian fiscal residents, the Italian government has introduced a flat tax rate of 100,000 Euros per year regardless of income, which can be used for fifteen years.
International Chamber of Nautical and Maritime Arbitration In a bid to streamline what can be lengthy bureaucracy, the new International Chamber of Nautical and Maritime Arbitration has been established to represent the interests of all the companies who work in the nautical sector to help resolve legal and technical problems. This Chamber is conceived to help resolve design, construction and sales contract disputes, as well as disagreements on transportation, delivery, mediation and brokerage, docking, rentals, chartering and other nautical services.

The global market for yachts above 50 metres recorded a 6% increase in 2016, and a significant proportion of the overall turnover from megayachts derives directly from Italy. Out of about 400 vessels, roughly 100 were built by boatyards located in Viareggio. Both Viareggio and Tuscany represent the productive district of the large boatyards that build yachts exported throughout the world, and are major contributors to the global order book. It is hoped that with the above new methods in place, the high-end Italian yacht market will only continue to grow, supported by the newly launched Versilia Yachting Rendez-vous hosted in Viareggio, which, due to its May timing, means it now opens the European boat show season.

elebrating 40 years in 2018 of success in yacht design, the Tommaso Spadolini design studio is the fruits of a family passion. Son of the famous architect Pierluigi Spadolini, Tommaso began his career in his father’s design office. In 1959 Pierluigi was nominated to the first Italian chair of industrial design, and since the early ‘60s collaborated with the Cantieri di Pisa designing their entire range, including the benchmark Akhir series. “For me, yachts have always been, and still are, my choice in applied design; here I can bring to bear the accumulation of all our family’s knowhow,” says Tommaso. After working alongside his father during the Cantieri di Pisa years, in the early 1980s Tommaso created his first independent designs for Barberis and embarked on an enduring partnership with Canados. The first Canados 70’, launched in 1984, brought to the fore one of the crucial traits of Tommaso Spadolini’s work – design must always include strong functional elements. The Canados 70’ became a benchmark in luxury yacht design.
Functional Design Functional design has formed the backbone of Tommaso Spadolini’s projects. From their very beginning as hand-drawn

In addition to Cantieri di Pisa, Spadolini’s professional collaborations have included projects with Barberis, Alalunga, Baglietto, rossinavi, Aprea, Canados, otam, Wally and Serigi.

now, with 40 years as an architect and designer under his belt, he has amassed a total of 107 vessels built between 1984 and 1992, and can celebrate his preeminent position within Italian yacht design. In 1992, Tommaso was chosen from an international pool of designers to design Fortuna, the Spanish royal yacht. launched
in 2000, 43m long, and with three turbines giving her a speed of almost 75 knots, Fortuna’s hull was designed by donald Blunt’s American design studio. “The superyacht reached a top speed of 74.8 knots,” says Tommaso, “a very special one where I was responsible for the exterior lines,

(including interior design for Luca Bassani’s first two Wally 80’s and for Bao Bab, the first motoryacht for Camper & Nicholsons) and designing production yachts. He drew the lines of Don Giovanni, an 11m powerboat that combined the traditional configuration of a Sorrentine Gulf ‘gozzo’ with an incredibly dynamic superstructure design that was nominated for the Italian design award Compasso d’Oro. This successful theme was applied by Aprea to several different models, the longest at 16m, over the next few years. Several custom projects followed in the early 2000’s: the Baglietto 138’ RC for Roberto Cavalli, launched in 2004, followed by Nina J in 2005. Both are perfect examples of the ‘wide body’ concept, a full-beam conceptual configuration without side decks that greatly increases available interior volume. Spadolini was the first to realise that this increase in interior volume would revolutionise the entire superyacht industry. RC and Nina J were forerunners of this concept, and in 2006 Nina J won the World Yachts Trophies. Many other projects characterised this period: Aslec, the 46m built by Rossinavi and launched in 2012, the widely imitated fourth vessel designed by Spadolini for the same owner; Numptia, 70m, also built by Rossinavi, launched in 2011 and winner of the 2012 World Superyacht Awards; Gipsy, a 35m planing hull built by the Genoa based Otam yard. Launched in 2016, Gipsy won the 2017 World Superyacht Awards, along with the Showboats Design Awards in the “Best Naval Architecture” category with the Umberto Tagliavini designed hull.
Moving Forward
Custom Projects
During the past ten years, Studio Spadolini has been entrusted with some prestigious refitting, involving yachts built by Cantieri di Pisa, Magnum, and Baglietto. In recent years, he was appointed by Turkish yard Sirena Marine to develop the interiors for two models, 56’ and 64’, in collaboration with German Frers Studio, who was in charge of the interiors, and in 2017 a fruitful collaboration was signed with Rosetti Superyacht. Here Spadolini designed an entire gamma, from 50 to 85 meters in length. In the summer of 2018, the launch of a new yacht fully custom-designed for Roberto Cavalli is scheduled, along with a 102’ motoryacht, built by CCN for American owners who appointed Spadolini for interior design.

he full-custom 67m motor yacht Seasense built by Italian yard Benetti is wholly distinctive. Launched at the 2017 Monaco Yacht Show to great acclaim and delivered to her owner at the end of July, the bold superyacht is underpinned inside and out by a connection to the sea, with a design aesthetic that revolves around the relationship with the surrounding environment. Built for a highly experienced owner who requested that the outdoor areas be as spacious as possible, Seasense is a game changer. Her most notable and recognisable feature is found on the main deck aft; a sprawling 10m superyacht spa pool with walk-around area for sumptuous lounging, now coined the Benetti Beach Concept. Exterior designed by Dutch designer
Cor D. Rover, his first Benetti vessel to date, with naval architecture by the shipyard’s technical office, Seasense’s displacement steel hull and aluminium superstructure represent smart advances in what can be achieved in the world of yachting. The project was sparked five years ago when Benetti asked a selection of top designers to pen concepts in celebration of the yard’s 40th anniversary. These were presented with fanfare at the 2012 Monaco Yacht Show, and later included in a bespoke book for Benetti’s clients. “Of all the designs, only one was chosen and built, and that was Seasense,” says Cor D. Rover proudly. “It started with everything focused around the swimming pool – a pool that you can walk around

and spend the day around rather than putting people in a lower deck beach club. Instead, we wanted to create a beach club on the main deck, and that is what triggered the client’s interest. He had been looking for a long time and couldn’t find what he wanted, but when he saw Seasense, he knew it was right. The biggest task of a designer is to create the demand rather than wait for it – sometimes owners don’t know what they want until they see it.”
A Pool to Rival All Others Rover’s pool-centric yacht began life as a 50m, with a 6m by 3m pool. By the time the owner had finished ‘tweaking’ the design, Benetti was faced with building a 67m yacht that contained a sprawling 10m by 3.5m pool, with a depth of 1.2m at its deepest point. “The client stretched the boat, and Benetti were very cooperative”, says Rover, including, finding a solution for a pool that supports 27,000 litres of water. Moulded to form part of the hull, the bottom of the pool has been strengthened to withstand the forces coming both from the water inside the pool and the interaction between the hull and the sea. Fully tested by MaRIn, and with
smart technical adjustments, the pool water can also stay in the pool during navigation without sloshing about or causing stability problems. and when the owners so choose, the flexible pool space can be covered with carbon fibre and teak planks and converted into a basketball court.
Exterior Spaces a synergy of purpose between owner and designer has resulted in a yacht that doesn’t simply maximise exterior spaces – it uses them as a starting point for the entire design. The effect of vertical space on the profile – making it taller – is offset by the sheer length of Seasense, as well as the tapering of the aft deck, the size of which reduces the overall volume of superstructure. The plumb bow and purposeful exterior style also lend themselves well to high ceilings, while the pool area has rejigged the way that one would expect all the exterior decks to be used. “a lot of boats have a sundeck far up and a beach club far down, almost in a sad place, very dark and tucked away, perhaps with a lot of technical stuff around it,” says Rover. “We brought the beach club up one deck and the

sun deck down and we combined these two in this aft deck beach area.” The sun deck is now a private spot for family breakfasts, sweating it out in the covered, fullyappointed gym or soaking in the pool, and is equipped with sofas, an american bar and a wood-burning pizza oven.
Indoor-Outdoor Design Built to Lloyd’s Registry standards, Seasense boasts a total interior volume of 1,175GT, with a 10.8m beam and a maximum draught of 3.2m. But she is so much more than a feat of technical engineering. Teak decking runs athwartships rather than fore to aft, emphasising the breadth of beach area. Teak louvres along the sides of the aft deck can be adjusted to shade lounging guests from sunshine pouring on to the pool, as do broad pagoda-like umbrellas, while misters keep things cool. The indoor-outdoor veranda on the main deck separated by two sets of massive sliding doors can divide the pool/dining area/lounge into two or three spaces, or, when left open, create one sprawling indoor-outdoor space that runs for more than 30 metres, with a table seating up to twelve guests. completely and the cutaway gunwales next to them offer stunning panoramic views over the sea, while a second spa pool is situated on the uppermost deck, forward of a large sky lounge. “Depending on the weather people can choose if they want to eat in or out, but it’s always visually connected to the pool, and that gives a very open feeling,” says Rover. “We only achieved that by limiting the main deck salon, because we’ve discovered over time that noone actively uses the main deck salon, it’s a reception area at best and they always prefer to sit in the sky lounge. So, we made better use of the space by using it for the outside.”
Interior Styling Even inside the yacht, guests are reminded of the sea. Interior styled by Los angeles-based studio aREa, which has styled many of the owner’s residential projects but made its superyacht debut with Seasense, the design is contemporary with a blue palette inspired by the water. Working to the owner’s brief of “light” and “airy” with ceiling height, the interior reflects the horizon, with the darkest blue on the lowest level and shade that get lighter as they rise. using over 100 different materials, including four varieties of wood and multiple blue colourways, the interior includes blue furnishings such as Walter Knoll lounge chairs and a Martin Brattrud sofa, with a vibrant artwork by Valérie Belin featured in the sky lounge. White wood is used for all the bases, trims, doors and door frames, complemented by lapis lazuli velvets, leather furniture and silky, mottled blue carpets. accommodation is for twelve guests in six cabins, with up to fourteen crew. The master suite, situated forward on the main deck, is huge and glamorous, from the monolithic marble bath in the en suite to dressing rooms and a long grey wood desk. The design also makes the most of the recessed ceiling over the bed, with a mirror-polished stainless steel chandelier by Studio Roso that glints in the light. aft of the suite is a VIP perfectly positioned for family members, and down via a marble staircase (or lift) lie four guest cabins with the same breath-taking height. “The owner is used to new York apartment buildings, so we included 2.7m ceilings in all the spaces, but more than 3m in the owner’s suite, which is like a cathedral; it gives a very airy feeling above the bed,” says Rover.

media system that allows guests to access an extensive film catalogue from any room. On the upper deck, in addition to the bridge and the captain’s cabin, is a second saloon. This more formal area than the one on the main deck is split into a living area, an office space and a bookcase, plus another day area further aft, furnished with sofas and sun loungers. The dining space is in a circular veranda with a table seating twelve. The garage in the centre of the yacht is home to a limo-tender specially designed by Giorgio Cassetta, while the engine room and technical spaces have such spacious surrounds that some bits of kit look like exhibits in a modern art gallery. The two Caterpillar engines (1,380kW each) deliver a top speed of 15.5 knots, while the yacht’s range stands at around 5,000 nautical miles at a cruising speed of 12 knots. With so much going for it, it’s little wonder that this highly unique yacht scooped the Judges’ Commendation award at the BOaT International Design & Innovation awards 2018 in the category Best Lifestyle Feature Design for its big and extraordinary pool deck.

eadquartered in Torino, Opacmare is today a world leader in the design and production of nautical components. Consolidating 20 years of experience, research and investment, it develops and manufactures nautical-themed products that are all characterised by its ‘Made in Italy’ mark. The company’s latest innovation lies in the field of hi-low platforms for outboard-powered boats. Featuring an integrated lifting mechanism, the design has been created to provide a safe solution to an ever-increasing problem in the marine industry. As the demand for leisure boating continues to grow on a global scale, the sale of sterndrives is steadily decreasing as the use of outboard engines (up to 627 HP each) rapidly grows in popularity. The problem, however, is that outboard-powered boats currently have no safe means of accessing the water, or avoiding contact with the propellers once in the water. Opacmare’s SAFE design creates a private full-beam beach/island on the transom of the boat using a new electrohydraulic lifting mechanism.
Low position – when the boat is at the anchor, the platform upper face is appr. 10cm under water level.

Opacmare.indd 39
Pushing Innovation Both safe and convenient, SAFE can be adjusted to three levels: Low, used when the boat is at anchor, creating a platform with an upper face that is approximately 10cm below water level; Ride, used when the boat is cruising, creating a platform that levelled with the cockpit; and High, which allows the engine to be trimmed out of the water. With safety at the fore of its design, SAFE is synchronised with the outboard trim system for the main outboard engines, meaning that when the platform is underwater the engines can’t be started, when the engines are running the platform can’t be lowered, and that when the platform is in ‘High’ configuration, the engines can be trimmed up. Compatible with single, double, triple and quad engines, SAFE can be fitted to both monohull and catamaran vessels, and is compatible with boats up to 15m in length.
easy water access for all, including children and the elderly, without the need for a bathing ladder. When configured to ‘High’, it allows for easy docking, thanks to the platform being on the same level as a floating pontoon, and small tenders and water toys can be easily lifted out of the water. In addition to providing a private island at the stern, which increases overall deck space by 30%, it also improves overall stabilisation when at rest when the platform is configured to the lower position. Providing protection for the outboard engines themselves when docked, it also comes equipped with an integrated and self-adjusting deck access step system. An emergency kick-up function is preserved by a dedicated hatch in the platform, which also makes cleaning or replacing the propellers easier. Equipped with smartphone remote activation, the SAFE technology is a gamechanger.

orn in Saudi Arabia, Mr Fahad Al Athel did not grow up by the sea. His passion for yachting was happened upon in 1999 when a good friend requested his assistance. “He asked me to visit Amels in Holland with him, and to discuss the potential of extending his yacht by three metres,” he says. “So, I went, it was a successful meeting, and from that time I became interested in boats.” When that same friend decided to build a 65m yacht, he once again placed his trust in Mr Athel. “He asked me to look for a good, reliable shipyard that could build a 65m at a competitive price,” he explains. “I didn’t want to go to Australia or Germany or Holland, so I decided to go to Turkey where I discovered a highly competent workforce at an achievable rate. So, I leased some land in Izmit near Istanbul, which I still have today, and decided to build the yacht myself.”
Building a Workforce The highly praised 65m motor yacht Nourah of Riyad – designed by Donald Starkey – was at the time of her launch, the largest yacht to ever come out of Turkey. It was also the

It was during her original build, however, that Mr Athel made some crucial decisions regarding the future of yachtley and its workforce. “I decided to hire lloyds to certify the shipyard, and to certify motor yacht elements – the yacht that I planned to build for another client,” he explains. “I also decided to go for lloyds and SolAS certification for elements, which cost me more, but I wanted the experience and training for my employees. We now have a really high calibre workforce producing fantastic quality of work.”

The owner’s suite, with marble pillars, punctuated by royal blue and sea-green silks and fabric detailing.
Next Level Design At an impressive 80m, elements is an inspiring yacht, thanks in no small part to her notable SolAS classification, and her naval architecture undertaken by Alfa Marine in Athens. She comfortably accommodates up to 24 guests within her expansive interior, as well as 19 crew, comprising a master suite, two VIp staterooms, four double staterooms, four twin cabins and one smaller twin cabin. She features a classically-styled displacement steel hull (tested at Marin Institute in Holland) and an aluminium superstructure, with teak decks, and is fitted with two pairs of stabilisers that work at anchor to increase on-board comfort when the yacht is stationary, particularly in rough waters. powered by two MTu (16V 4000 M63l) diesel engines and propelled by her twin screw propellers,
elements is capable of a top speed of 18kn. originally commissioned to be built for an owner who made some minor changes before suddenly pulling out of the deal, Mr Athel made the bold decision to continue with the build himself, hiring renowned Italian designer cristiano Gatto for the interior. “I asked cristiano, who I knew from before, if he would work with me on elements. He is an excellent designer, I would recommend him for any design job, and I will always use him from now on.” enlisting the likes of yachting protection for all paint and fairing, and Vibrascan for noise and vibration study, the finished result is an oceangoing vessel of indisputable status, with a volume of 2,900GT, and key features that include a beach club, spa pool, hammam and
an elevator to provide convenient access to her four voluminous decks. Her opulent interior is cast in cool shades of silver and blue, with inbuilt cabinetry at every turn, as well as key pieces of specially commissioned stand-alone furniture. Marble pillars and crystal chandeliers combine to great effect, punctuated by royal blue and sea-green silks and fabric detailing.
The Pride of Turkey “elements is a fantastic yacht, I’m proud of every bit of her,” says Mr Athel. “It’s very hard to achieve a yacht of that quality for that price, but I want to have the best of everything. It took me time, especially with the lloyds certification, but we now have an amazing team. When people visit the yard, they want to see elements, and they’re very impressed with what they see.”

The observation room, with panoramic views.
As one of the rare shipyards in Europe with its own in-house interior workshop, Yachtley strikes a keen balance between in-house workmanship and sub-contracted exterior suppliers. “We have a Turkish naval architect, Turkish and Greek engineers, including Kostas Christodoulou, the manager of the shipyard who is an expert in electronics and helps me a lot – they are all of an excellent standard,” he says. “We also boast top quality carpenters, and I bought the latest machinery to enable them to deliver a premium job. The shipyard carpenters have completed work on my residential properties as well, and the quality is perfect. We source nearly all materials from Turkey too, apart from the marble, which we source from Italy.” Elements marks the dawn of a new age for both Mr Athel and Yachtley shipyard. Always keen to go beyond the expected, he leaves aside convention, and instead opts for the unity of aesthetics, safety and function in modern, customised designs. Collaborating with proven naval architects to create yachts with elegant lines and curves, Mr Athel has his sights firmly set on the future of hybrid yachts, SOLAS yachts and ground-breaking design concepts. “After Elements, we’re hoping for more orders. We are ready – I have the team, I have the capacity to build bigger, we can go up to 120m,” he says, “and that’s what I want, to keep building large yachts of this calibre, that’s the aim.”
80m Elements is SOLAS classified, comfortably accommodating up to 24 guests.

he word ‘custodian’ is described by The Oxford English Dictionary as ‘a person who has responsibility for, or looks after something’, and I would use the word ‘custodian’ as the best way to describe the owner of a classic and historically important yacht. Owning a significant classic comes with a sense of duty and moral responsibility to ensure the yacht is treated with as much care and attention to detail as time, energy and financial resource will allow. Not so much about ‘possession’, more a case of taking care until transition occurs from one generation to the next.

The Atollvic Shipyard
Sea Wolf is now a luxury superyacht explorer available for private and corporate charter.
Sea Wolf emerging from the shed at Atollvic Shipyard.
Known for completing complex and sophisticated refits, new builds, hull extensions, interior refurbishments and engine upgrades to high standard, in record breaking time, the atollvic shipyard is located in ria de vigo, on the northwest coast of spain. specialising in superyacht and classic yacht refit from 20m to 75m, atollvic is part of the much larger vicalsa group, based in a region renowned for shipbuilding, fabrication and marine engineering. atollvic has access to the best possible maritime and classic yacht refit skills resource in the whole of spain. recent classic yacht refit work completed in 2016 has included the 59m 1957 tugboat sea Wolf (which for some time now has been a luxury superyacht explorer available for private and corporate charter), and the classic schooner No.6 of london, built at the p. smit Jr yard in rotterdam in 1920.

replacing steel sheets with riveted joints in a hull. fortunately for us here in vigo, our marine industrialist traditions go back to the mid-1800s, and ongoing training and teaching of young apprentices means we have training colleges offering courses to preserve these noble skills such that ‘rivet management’ is actually very well known around here.”
Specialist Skill Set
When the time comes for a refit or repair of a classic, the atollvic shipyard, based in vigo, north-west spain, has much experience in this field, and managing Director, mr marco villar, is a firm believer the process can only begin when a suitable shipyard has been chosen. “you need expert hands in several disciplines and two of the most important shipbuilding skill-sets are now quite scarce these days,” says mr villar. “for example, ‘riverbank carpentry’ – a term we use to describe an ability to recreate intricate and beautiful wooden elements, or the experience required when removing and

Atollvic Shipyard.indd 51
apart from the physical skills, experience and technical resource necessary, mr villar feels the trust element and the quality of the relationship between the owner’s team and the shipyard’s management team is just as important. “It’s about having the right ‘state of mind’ as anything else; an ability to cope and deal with the many unknown variables that classic yacht refit and repair nearly always requires. “In many, but not all cases, original plans and hull-lines drawings will have been lost to the passing of time,” he adds. “Even if they are available, they can sometimes be of limited use due to inaccuracies or changes. like peeling back the layers of a rotten onion, classic yachts have a habit of revealing the unexpected, and what may have first appeared to have been a yacht in fairly respectable condition on the outside, can soon reveal decades worth of horrors and abuse on the inside. “There’s the ever-present need to ensure the long-term integrity and safety of the yacht going forward while trying to balance the sensitive
decision as to what should and should not be stripped out and replaced or modified from the original. a situation, in fact, where sometimes ‘new classical’ becomes prescriptive, using modern technology with respect to the past.
An Honourable Refit The trust and strength of relationship between the shipyard and classic yacht owner can undergo a fair amount of strain and when you’ve been entrusted with a classic, mr villar feels it should be seen as an honour, where the relationship with the owner becomes far more than merely a transactional contract between two parties. “It’s about an obligation between gentlemen,” he says. “a deep sense of professional responsibility is passed from one to the other. The feeling must be preserved and passed on to the staff who will be working on the yacht, so they too can fall in love with the yacht in question. “When you understand the level of uncertainty you sometimes face with this kind of project, the works contract based solely upon clauses and time penalties is clearly going to be useless to reach a successful conclusion and why both trust and understanding are clearly a must.”

utch shipyard, ICON Yachts, is a master of refit, and one that has made a name for itself in unusual conversions. It’s not surprising that following the successful conversion of high profile 77m ice class tug Legend – now a luxury passenger explorer yacht – ICON has been flooded with leads for conversion projects. Continually working on both refits and new build projects, ICON’s impressive facilities make it easy for the shipyard to accommodate multiple large vessels at any one time. Its large dry dock (150m long, 50m wide and 10m deep) can accommodate four 70m vessels simultaneously, or up to six 50m yachts, with a mast clearance height of 28m at NAP. It also boasts 500m of secure protected mooring in a sheltered deepwater harbour, unrestricted by locks, dykes or bridges.
unveiled plans for its latest conversion, Project Ragnar.
A Powerful Reach Previously called Sanaborg, the original vessel was initially built as an ice breaking multipurpose support supply vessel in Holland in 2012. After entering the ICON shed in July 2017, her extreme make-over began in earnest. Designed by Beaulieu-based yacht designers RWD, Project Ragnar sports a unique style, which was inspired by medieval war craftsmanship, combined with modern sleek lines and British heritage. When delivered, she will be one of the few real explorer luxury superyachts with a certified ICE Class A1 super hull. Fully intended to cruise in remote areas, Project Ragnar is LY3 classed with Arctic explorer capabilities, and full ice-breaking functionality
Most recently, work has been completed on 70m explorer yacht Sherakhan, which underwent an extreme make-over, and 74m Global ahead of the winter season, but it was during the 2017 Monaco Yacht Show that ICON BEFORE

with its unique ICE class PC5 rated electric driven ice pods. these elements give the vessel an incredible range of 6,000nm, which means exploration of the most remote areas of the planet will be within arm’s reach. Originally built to confront rough weather conditions, she has a surplus of power, but her performance will also be matched by her extended luxurious and well-appointed accommodation areas, not to mention a functional designated deck for toys with a fully certified helicopter landing pad. the on-board toys include (but are not limited to) a luxury Ripsaw Ev2, a helicopter EC145, two 8m tenders, two 6m RIBs, a sea explorer submarine for two people, two jet skis, two laser sailing boats, and one RIB Castoldi 26.
New Frontiers the exceptional design has taken all eventualities into account, whether in polar conditions or diving in the Caribbean, and includes a floating beach with a retractable gangway, capable of berthing the Jet Skis after use, and leaving guests free to head towards the leisure area equipped with a massage room, sauna, full size gym, ice pool, and most impressively, a snow room. During the conversion, several tanks will be removed in order to create the leisure/spa area, which will also have space to accommodate a

ski room to store all ski gear, as well as a boot room, a swimming pool and a Jacuzzi. Most extraordinarily, due to its low draft of only 3.15m, Project Ragnar will be able to get unusually close to the shore, and thanks to its air-cooled generator, it will even be possible to beach the vessel providing direct access to sandy bays without the need for a tender. Powered by a twin ice pod propelled diesel electric engine, Project Ragnar will be able to accommodate up to fourteen guests in eight cabins, including two owner suites. She is scheduled for completion in 2019.

ounded 27 years ago in 1990 in northern California by brian barr and michael barr, CAT specialises in custom manufacturing ultra-high performance bespoke audio systems for the world’s best superyachts, recording studios, residential home theatres, commercial theaters, night clubs, outdoor concert and theater venues, indoor and outdoor distributed audio, and large scale private aircraft. CAT’s clients include oscar and grammy awardwinners, nfl, nbA, mlb, nhl, formula one and fifA superstars and team owners, fortune 500 Ceo’s, top entrepreneurs and business people, world leaders, and the most discerning clientele worldwide who choose to share the best audio playback systems with their families and friends.
Custom Solutions upon request, CAT’s custom audio solutions (indoor, outdoor, and marine) can be designed, engineered, manufactured, and on-site engineered, calibrated or tuned to be ready to accommodate live performances from world-class rock bands, dJs, jazz ensembles, and even symphonies. in addition, private clients can watch their favourite films under the stars or experience the accuracy and power of the best musical performances worldwide in the privacy of their own outdoor or indoor surroundings. CAT’s engineers use state-of-the-art CnC machines and the finest materials, such as 316l stainless steel, marine grade aluminium, titanium, carbon fibre, gold, silver, composites, and mbX105, to create each CAT loudspeaker to maximise audio performance and aesthetics in every unique environment while maximising performance per dollar spent. in addition to its custom indoor and outdoor bespoke loudspeakers, CAT manufactures its own multi-award-winning audio

amplifiers, including fully-differential, fully-balanced, push/pull amplifiers to double the ‘speed’ and increase audio clarity, impact and control, digital signal processors (to allow CAT’s engineers to ‘tune’ any CAT system to maximise audio performance in each unique environment), and CAT loudspeaker and interconnect cabling (to properly deliver ultra-high power, high bandwidth, clear audio signals down long cable lengths).
Global Client Base To ensure maximum performance, reliability, and ease of use, CAT deploys engineers world-wide to on-site calibrate its audio systems to each unique environment. CAT’s engineers can also create individual audio settings tailored to each family member’s preferences. Custom designing, engineering, and manufacturing each individual component of bespoke CAT audio systems (including the custom loudspeaker grilles) requires a team effort. Thus, it spends a significant amount of time working closely with the world’s best designers, architects, builders, and system integrators. delivering the world’s best custom audio systems requires CAT to maximise audio performance, reliability, and ease of use, in conjunction with maximising aesthetics. CAT can manufacture aluminium loudspeaker drivers (woofers, midranges, and tweeters) to wrist watch tolerances that can dissipate heat (unlike most speaker drivers which are made from paper and plastic), so custom CAT loudspeakers can be made smaller to fit into bulkheads, thin walls, furniture, and other small spaces, while still significantly outperforming speakers that take substantially more overall volume.

Fischer Panda UK Adds Sea Recovery Aqua Matic Dual Pass System to Range
Marine software manufacturer Besenzoni has introduced a new Application for operating gangways via a mobile phone or tablet. Designed especially for boat owners in order to make it easier for them to get on board when they arrive at the dock, even if they have forgotten the remote control for the gangway, the new App enables the operation of the gangway (both the retractable and the external types) from the convenience of a mobile phone, linked via a Bluetooth receiver/adaptor.
Fischer Panda UK has added the newly-launched Sea Recovery Aqua Matic Dual Pass series of watermakers to its product line. For endless ultra-pure water and clean potable water onboard, the next generation reverse osmosis watermaker – developed by the Water Purification Division of Parker Hannifin Corporation – provides a fully automatic dual pass water desalination system as a single, compact unit. Quiet-running and compact it is ideal for leisure boats, combining the benefits of a standard watermaker with the capability to produce ultra-pure water from sea water or from any dockside freshwater source. Chris Fower of Fischer Panda, said: “The new Dual Pass is one of the most revolutionary units available and particularly significant for boat owners who want reliable, limitless access to ultra-pure water…when they are washing their boat.”

Foiler Flying Yacht Makes World Debut Built in the UAE by Enata, the revolutionary new Foiler flying yacht made its world debut at the Dubai International Boat Show 2018. Delivering a smooth and exhilarating ride for passengers, the Foiler’s retractable carbon fibre hydrofoils deliver strength, rigidity and lightness, allowing the yacht to fly 1.5m above water, even while delivering up to 20% increased fuel efficiency at top hydro-foiling speeds. Using a diesel-electric hybrid propulsion system, the Foiler travels at speeds of up to 40 knots, with hydro-foiling flight commencing from 18 knots with seven passengers. At a cruise speed of 30 knots, the Foiler has a range of 130 nautical miles. The retractable hydrofoils and propellers are lifted and positioned out of the water when not in use, further reducing the yacht’s height for storage and making it particularly convenient for stowage in superyacht garages.
Galeon Selects Volvo Penta D13-1000 Engine for New 640 Fly Model Luxury yacht and motorboat builder, Galeon, has opted for Volvo Penta’s D13-1000 engine for its innovative new 640 Fly model, which launched at the Miami International Boat Show. Designed to provide an intelligently transformative use of space throughout its three decks, with luxury touches to appeal to families and charter enthusiasts, Galeon selected Volvo Penta’s most powerful marine engine – the D13-1000 – for its proven performance and power-to-weight ratio. “We are very happy with the performance of the Volvo Penta D13-1000,” says Grzegorz Tuszynski, Managing Director of Galeon. “The engine offers extremely good torque. The boat goes from stationary to planing speed in just over six seconds and to its top speed in 24 seconds – this is faster than many of our smaller boats. The light weight of the engine is also a particular highlight, as it enables us to keep the total weight of the boat to a minimum.” i. www.volvopenta.com

ACR Electronics and Ocean Signal Highlight Benefits of MEOSAR-Compatible Beacons ACR Electronics and Ocean Signal are highlighting to all boaters how the life-saving capabilities of its distress beacons and the importance of including an EPIRB and PLB in their safety kit are significantly enhanced due to Cospas-Sarsat’s next-generation Medium-Earth Orbit Search and Rescue (MEOSAR) system. Revolutionising the search and rescue process, 24 EU launched Galileo navigation satellites will carry second generation SAR transponders for the Cospas-Sarsat system at Medium Earth Orbit altitude to supplement the existing LEOSAR (Low Earth Orbit) and GEOSAR (Geostationary Orbit) systems. The increased number of satellites offers much faster signal detection, greater location accuracy, strengthened coverage and greater reliability to improve alerting times for distress beacon owners in emergency situations. All ACR Electronics and Ocean Signal beacons are compatible with the next-gen satellites, ensuring they will offer the near instantaneous signal detection and transmission enabled by the global MEOSAR satellite transponders and upgraded ground-station components. i. www.acrartex.com

Yellow & Finch Publishers’ Marco Geels
Pushing Forward So here we are in 2018, launching the first issue of SuperYacht Industry this year! 2018 marks the publication’s thirteenth anniversary, and as always, our goal is to keep our readers up-to-date with current events in the world of superyachts. This year, we will be showcasing marine product launches, projects, and developments, just as we have been doing over the past twelve years. We will continue to publish the latest innovations, so please do not hesitate to contact us about sharing your news. January is the month where SuperYacht Industry visits boot Düsseldorf, but this year, boot Düsseldorf set records: 1,923 exhibitors from 68 different countries presented yachts, boats and accessories for all watersports activities on 220,000m2 of stand space. Messe Düsseldorf CEO Werner M. Dornscheidt, commented: “These figures are unique in the industry. No other watersports trade fair reflects the entire world market in all its diversity as completely as boot.” The luxury yacht hall six was more popular than even before, both with suppliers and visitors. Every single square metre was booked and the hall provided a splendid opportunity to see the luxurious models. According to the manufacturers, there is a general trend
towards sophisticated, electronic on-board equipment, as well as towards high-quality interior design ideas. The buyers of luxury yachts are certainly becoming increasingly younger, as the number of wealthy young people who want to invest in expensive boats and experience the freedom they give to enjoy their time out on the water increases. Meanwhile, capacity utilisation at the shipyards is very positive, and boot 2018 is expected to stimulate even more business this year. This time next year, boot Düsseldorf will be celebrating its 50th anniversary. Please also let me remind you that in our next issue, we will be publishing a selection of interesting features, including a special Focus on The Netherlands, Marine Propulsion & Power Generation, Ballast Water & Emissions, Entertainment Systems and Safety & Training. Let us help you to capture the undivided attention of your existing and potential business relations. And lastly, together with my Y&F colleagues, I am always at your disposal to assist with, and advise on, any marketing communication needs that you may have. If you would like to receive more information to help plan your 2018 media schedule, you can download our Media Kit 2018 from our website, or just contact me.
