Benetti revives tradition with slipway launch of Lucky Wave Following in the wake of the glorious Benetti yachts dating back to 1873, the shipyard has completed another launch from the historic 56m inclined slipway, which, unique in Italy for boats of this size, is still fully operational at the historic shipyards of Viareggio. Diamond 44M is the fiberglass flagship of the Benetti Class category, boasting a 102m2 Sun Deck – the largest on the market for this size – and a sophisticated ventilation system, which ensures fresh and clean air throughout the yacht. There are three more units under construction. Lucky Wave is the third unit of Diamond 44M, designed to improve life onboard not only for owners and guests, but also for the entire crew. Benetti workers and management looked on with pride as she touched water for the first time in Viareggio.

NEWS IN BRIEF Cantiere Rossini announces opening of its Repainting Sheds On 18 September 2021, Cantiere Rossini celebrated the grand opening of its industry leading new repainting sheds. Both sheds are identical and are entirely built in sustainably grown Alpine wood. They have interior dimensions of 64m length, 22m width, and a height of 21.5m. This gives the capability to host +50m motor yachts without removing the mast. The sheds are equipped with separate state-of-the-art extraction systems for dust and solvents to guarantee an optimum environment for our client’s yacht. Furthermore, they are heavily thermally insulated. Their advanced geothermal heating system uses a natural refrigerant gas and sea water as source of energy, leading to low energy consumptions. Amazingly all the energy used in our repainting operation produces zero CO2.

NEWS IN BRIEF Brand new 50m yacht RMK Marine and the Milan-based studio of design Hot Lab are pleased to announce that they have begun the development of a brand-new 50m yacht. The project, named Aries, references the zodiac sign and constellation that recalls in its Turkish translation ('Koç') the industrial and services group to which the shipyard belongs: the Koç Holding. The concept stems from the desire to return to the construction of an explorer yacht, following the experience of a few promising, but smaller specimens built over past years by RMK Marine. The new yacht, the keel of which was laid earlier this year, will be larger in size, with a more captivating design and loading capacity capable of meeting all the requirements of the most demanding owner.

Why200 Work is proceeding at a fast pace and on schedule to complete Why200, the first full-wide-body by Wally, which will make its official debut at Cannes Yachting Festival in September. Yet again Wally has pushed forward the boundaries of possibility creating a yacht that has never been seen before in the history of yachting. The first unit of the new Why range, which will be launched in the first half of July, is going to leave an indelible mark on the world of yacht design. The innovative motor yacht combining the comfort and space of a larger displacement yacht with the speed and performance of a semi-displacement, was developed by Wally design team led by Luca Bassani, jointly with the Ferretti Group Engineering Department, working with Laurent Giles NA for naval architecture and Studio A. Vallicelli & C for interior design.

YACHT REPORT

P

hi is a magnificently sensuous motor yacht from the drawing board of Cor D. Rover, who has based the general concept, exterior design and interior layout on many in-depth conversations with the owner over a period of years. Relating inside and outside to the ”sectio divina” or the Golden Ratio, Phi is the formula that governs the continuation of dimensions and shapes in natural proportions throughout the design. The Phi Philosophy and deck levels are subsequently focused on three themes: the galaxy, the ocean surface and the underwater world. Phi’s interior design and styling are defined by the London-based studio Lawson Robb. Her naval architecture is by Van Oossanen Naval Architects. Their specially developed Fast Displacement XL hull form allows this yacht to be long and sleek, yet still remain under the 500 GT mark.

Justifiably proud Owner’s Representative Guy Booth comments, “All of us involved in the creation of Phi feel a sense of privilege to have had the opportunity to contribute to this innovative project. The cooperation between the owner’s team, the architects, the designers and everyone at Royal Huisman has been exceptional. We can be justifiably proud of what we have achieved.” Within the superyacht sector Phi’s fine – and therefore very fuel-efficient – hull lines, together with her very low profile, are considered to be a great challenge to engineer and build. But with its immense experience and track record of innovation in delivering over thirty low-profile and award-winning custom sailing superyachts, Royal Huisman and is not remotely intimidated by such projects.

Full confidence As Royal Huisman CEO Jan Timmerman explains, “Just take a look at our two current motoryacht projects: project 403, Phi, and project 406, a unique 52m sportfish yacht that will become the largest of its kind in the world. The individual aspirations and challenges of each of these projects were seen to be well outside the comfort zone by some yards. With the benefit of expert advice, each of these owners brought their highly distinctive individual projects to Royal Huisman, where fresh opportunities for creative problem-solving and innovation were enthusiastically welcomed. So what gives us so much confidence in Royal Huisman’s capability to build exceptional motoryachts? Here are two good examples of

1 0 | S Y I  2 0 2 1 | Volum e 1 6 | Issue 4

Phi.indd 10

the ‘edge’ Royal Huisman has to offer. First, the expertise we have acquired from our unrivalled 55 years’ experience in aluminium construction. This enables us to maximise performance and efficiency through compact, lightweight and high strength engineering. Second, our ability to design and install complex operational systems in restricted volume hull areas provides the owner with more net space for amenities and further increases efficiency.”

Unconventional design Phi offers significantly more exterior and semiinterior entertainment area on the aft deck than conventional designs, and instead of a typical “wedding cake” silhouette, she will have a very sleek and appealing low profile. Another “first” can be found on the pool deck with Cor D. Rover’s patented DEPP swimming pool. This pool uses a minimum volume of fresh water since the body of water can stay in the pool, heated and treated overnight, when not in use. The pool itself turns into a sealed tank and visa-versa at the touch of a button, avoiding lengthy pumping of water in and out of a separate, dedicated dump tank, which means, guests can first play a game on top of the flush pool cover and swim within 5 minutes in the pool that’s underneath.

Powerful vision Guy Booth, Owner’s representative and project management comments, “From the early days, it was fairly clear that this Owners vision would take a unique combination of some extraordinary skills. The Owner knew that he wanted a deep, intelligent and thought-provoking core concept, that reflects elements of several great personal interests. We initially met with six or seven of the most pedigree yacht designers in the world. There was something about Mr D. Rover’s approach that resonated with the Owner, asking thousands of questions, and proposing thousands of crazy ideas. In the early days, no one had any answers for the Owner. It took Cor and his team almost a year of deliberation before they eventually proposed the idea of ‘Phi’, how it related to the Owner, and Cor’s vision of how it would translate into design. From this moment, she has always been ‘Phi’. With such a powerful vision, a demand for the absolute highest level of quality available anywhere and such difficult engineering challenges, Royal Huisman was clearly the best partner to build the boat.”

Phi frontal.

Phi is scheduled for delivery later this year and will be supported by a matching 36m shadow vessel.

METSTRADE 2021

A

s conditions improve on a daily basis and vaccination rates soar across Europe, Metstrade 2021 will benefit from the RAI’s industry-leading COVID-19 protocol for face-toface meetings. “The main goal of RAI Amsterdam and our partner ICOMIA is to create a safe, successful and realistic gathering of the leisure marine industry”, says Metstrade director Niels Klarenbeek. “The enormous appetite among exhibitors and visitors to come together again in Amsterdam has been both inspiring and humbling.”

A global show Mr Klarenbeek is also encouraged by the large number of exhibitor applications, which has now topped the 1,300 mark. “We see hardly any changes in terms of participation from all across Europe and North America. Exhibitors from other markets are being very creative to ensure representation on the exhibition floor, underlining the fact that Metstrade 2021 will be a truly global show again.”

One-year floor plan

Metstrade 2021 will be held at the Europa Complex of RAI Amsterdam.

As a consequence of the challenges caused by the COVID-19 Pandemic, Metstrade 2021 will be held at the Europa Complex (Hall 1-7, Europa Foyer & Elicium) of RAI Amsterdam. “We will have a one-year floor plan that will enable us to welcome almost as many exhibitors as the record-breaking 2019 show”, explains Mr Klarenbeek. “A degree of reallocation was inevitable and exhibitors will start receiving their stand allocations in July.” The temporary layout ensures a safe and easyto-navigate trade show. It features a smart use of floor space and together with the state-ofthe-art extension to Hall 5, completed in 2020, will ensure a first-class trade show in every respect. In addition to all the country pavilions, the specialised SuperYacht Pavilion (SYP), Marina & Yard Pavilion (MYP) and Construction Material Pavilion (CMP) have all been well accommodated. The Superyacht Forum will take place from 15 to 17 November while other partners such as HISWA-RECRON, Global Marina Institute and NMEA also intend to organise events again at Metstrade 2021.

Metstrade.indd 13

Metstrade TV live The hybrid nature of the event will ensure a second stream of visitors have the opportunity to enjoy Metstrade from their home or office via the Metstrade Connect platform. This online participation will be significantly enhanced by the introduction of Metstrade TV, broadcast live and on the internet from a special studio in Hall 6. Pernille La Lau, who successfully anchored the virtual Metstrade event last December, will host a wide variety of programmes over the three days of the exhibition. These will include interviews with leading lights of the industry, expert panels discussing the latest developments and live reports from the exhibition floor. Crucially, Metstrade TV will offer regular opportunities for interaction with the worldwide audience who can contribute questions that will be answered by experts on the ground in Amsterdam. The feed will also be available on the devices of visitors at the show and broadcast on screens in the catering areas. A wealth of content will be created with ICOMIA, IBI, The Superyacht Group, Marina World magazine, Soundings Trade Only, Professional Boat Builder and the Water Revolution Foundation. The comprehensive programme will also feature the 30st DAME Awards Competition, a series of TechTalks, sustainability sessions and a retrospect of the Boat Builders Awards ceremony.

Metstrade Connect All attendees, in-person and online, will have access to the online Metstrade Connect platform, which will include exhibitor profiles. In addition, they will be able to see who else is joining and easily make contact with them, including prior to and after the event. The algorithms behind the Connect platform will make recommendations based on that professional profile. Metstrade Connect also allows the attendees to make a personalised agenda, set up appointments and enjoy a livestream of Metstrade TV. “Taken as a whole, all these innovative tools and content will ensure exhibitors and visitors alike

Combined with a new Bock HR StarCO2mpressor, Girschner’s new CO2 system is the lightest and smallest provision cooling system ever. Like their standard series of cooling systems, the new CO2 series is equipped with a PLC control system and brand-leading parts for the highest reliability. As in previous years, Girschner is exhibiting their series of Rack Cooling Units (RCU). The Rack Cooling Units (RCU) air/water-heat exchangers achieve, depending on the provided cooling water, a high cooling capacity of 1,000 to 24,000W. Higher energy efficiency is reached due to reduced power loss and heat development of EC fans inside. All Rack Cooling Units are equipped with electronic touch controllers and can be designed according to customer requirements.

Lift-Emotion – Amazing elevators in new assembly hall

Lift Emotion new assembly hall.

LIFT-EMOTION

Lift Emotion will be exhibiting during Metstrade 2021 at the Superyacht pavilion. At the moment, Lift Emotion is working on three glass elevators in their new assembly hall. All these elevators are special in their own way; one elevator is the largest round elevator to date, in the making for a massive yacht and with a diameter of 2,5m, one is a special private house glass elevator, and one is a belt driven glass elevator. How cool would it be for designers, owners, naval architects, and owner representatives to see the Lift Emotion products being made in their workshop? Three glass cabins are currently in production, as well as a regular service elevator. Feel free to come visit the Lift Emotion crew at their stand at Metstrade to learn more about the crafts of Lift Emotion or to plan a visit to their new assembly hall.

LAUNCHED IN 2012, FENDER INNOVATIONS HAS ACQUIRED AN EXCELLENT REPUTATION FOR THE DEVELOPMENT AND PRODUCTION OF HIGH-QUALITY, SUPER-STRONG, AND LIGHTWEIGHT FENDER SYSTEMS FOR ALL TYPES OF VESSELS THROUGHOUT THE WORLD. Their fender systems stand out because they are manufactured with a core of PE foam with many different densities and a wide variety of damping capacities, leading to significant operational cost savings. n terms of production, Fender Innovations has two large 5-axis CNC milling machines which ensure that their end product is produced with extreme accuracy. With these machines, the company manufactures fenders up to a maximum length of 18.5m, in one single section. The fender systems can be built in one piece in endless length by invisible connection of the sections due to a unique coating system. The foam that is used is encased with a specially developed high-tech fabric as reinforcement and a special topcoat with a variety of different hardnesses.

Any shape, any size Considering the diversity of the raw materials the company uses, it should come of no surprise that

Fender Innovations is active in an equally wide and diverse range of maritime sectors. A very special part of Fender Innovations is the production of the fenders for the superyacht Industry. The focus in this industry is mainly on the highly detailed fenders with a high-quality smooth finish that leaves no marks on impact. “We can make any shape, any size, and any angle that is required”, says Owner and Founder of Fender Innovations, Koos van Bijsterveld. Perhaps the two extremes of the company’s work can be demonstrated by two highly contrasting types of client: those for high-end superyacht tenders and interiors, and those for defence contracts involving submarine and amphibious vehicle components.

Chief Operational Officer of Fender Innovations, Sylvia Ruizendaal explains, “The fine-tuning of a fender that a specific client’s market needs makes all the difference. A fender for the offshore wind market has to perform a totally different role than a fender on a superyacht tender. To optimise the selection of the most suitable fender, Fender Innovations gathers a considerable amount of information about the vessel; details about the weight, propulsion, and use of the ship, for example. This gives us an indication about the forces that the fender is expected to experience in day-to-day operations. With all this information, we engineer the fender. And, of course, aesthetics is always important. You can compare the

smooth finish and design of our fenders to the shiny rims on a brand new car; it is the icing on the cake.”

Impressive skill set Fender Innovations manufactures fenders for both new and existing vessels and their fender systems are already used in more than 38 different countries. Fender Innovations is active in an equally diverse range of maritime sectors. This includes everything from searchand-rescue vessels and workboats such as pilot and patrol vessels, to cruise ship tenders and tenders for the Superyacht industry. In addition, the company offers fender installation and performs maintenance and repair work on request, through their efficient service department that operates throughout the world.

Successful collaboration with Compass Tenders Located in Port Hamble, Southampton, United Kingdom, Compass Tenders have been building custom tenders for some of the world’s most iconic superyachts since 2004. By offering unparalleled design, build quality and finish, together with exceptional customer service, their clients are able to confidently request specific requirements for their individual tenders, knowing that they will be achieved and built to the very highest standards. One of the companies Compass Tenders collaborated with on numerous occasions is Fender Innovations. “We have worked together with Compass Tenders for many years and the partnership has always gone perfectly smooth”, says Ms Ruizendaal. “We are proud to have worked with the professionals at Compass Tenders and are looking forward to many new projects and collaborations together in the future. With regard to the collaboration with Fender Innovations, Richard Faulkner, CEO of Compass Tenders says, “Fender Innovations offer unrivalled quality and their products stand the test of time. His goal is to find a solution for every challenge with regard to fenders that he comes across and coming up with new solutions even before the challenge arises. Mr van Bijsterveld shares, “To innovate is in our DNA and our number one goal is quality. We want to produce fenders that are ahead of their time, always aiming for even lighter, more flexible, stronger, and more sustainable products, with a focus on customer needs. We have started with these processes by converting the foam that we use to a product that can be used for subfloors for sports fields, and the wood we use is being reused to make new moulds. The next step is to convert the expanded polystyrene (EPS) we use into a new material that can be used for other applications.” In addition to this, in January of 2021, Fender Innovations welcomed Roemer Boogaard as CEO of Fender Innovations. The company is happy to take on the future with Mr Boogaard. All in all, the future of Fender Innovations is looking bright, and very green.

YACHT REPORT were more than happy to step up to the challenge. The result is a majestic go-anywhere explorer that features a striking mast, a 7.2t submarine that can be deployed and retrieved by a heavy-duty crane with an almost 8m reach.

Deep Sea The vessel itself has been aptly named. Shinkai – or ‘Deep Sea’, in Japanese – can reach the most remote and far-flung destinations, thanks to her self-sufficiency and large nautical range. She is also fitted with a hull built to Ice Class standards. Her other key features are a forwardfacing sonar system that studies the ocean floor and a 20t gyroscopic stabiliser that ensures stability in all weather conditions. The initial plan was for her to take on the famous Northwest and Northeast Passages. Whether that is still going ahead is still to be determined.

Global exploration Feadship launched its 54.9m explorer superyacht, Shinkai, from its shipyard in Aalsmeer on 2 October 2021.

A pure custom Feadship has made the first journey of what will be a lifetime of global exploration. And it will surely be the shortest trip ever as Shinkai was moved from the Feadship yard in Aalsmeer to the outside dock for final outfitting ahead of her sea trials and delivery later this year. New additions include a striking mast and the yacht’s very own submarine, just two of the specific requests by an owner who has enormous experience of discovering the world by sea.

hinkai features an exterior designed by Vitruvius, an interior penned by Boutsen Design, and naval architecture by Philippe Briand. She has a beam of 10.35m, a draft of 2.99m and a volume of 974GT. Project Shinkai is an explorer of the first degree and is set for a lifetime of globetrotting. Her owner is a defthand when it comes to world travel and requested a list of very unique and bespoke features to fulfil all demands. Designer Philippe Briand and the teams at Vitruvius and Feadship

Like every genuinely custom superyacht, the design for Shinkai revolved around these specific choices of the client. In this case, the key was how best to incorporate a 7.2t submarine on the aft deck along with the giant crane required for launching and collection. Taking this as the starting point, designer Philippe Briand and the teams at Vitruvius and Feadship have developed a 55m explorer yacht which will be able to travel the world while remaining both self-sufficient and fuel-efficient. Yacht designer and naval architect Philippe Briand focusses on motor yachts with sleek design and reduced carbon emissions. With regard to Shinkai, he shares, “This is a special project for us, as the yacht is the second yacht we have designed for the owner. He was the first yachtsman to adhere to the principles of the efficient hulls. We are thrilled with the progress that has been made on Shinkai in recent months and are enjoying watching the final stages of her construction at Feadship. As the second Vitruvius yacht to be built at the prestigious yard, this is another meeting of great minds and great names that will no doubt result in a landmark yacht to inspire many more adventurous owners of the future.”

Ice class baby The many adventures Shinkai is expected to embark on in the coming years include taking on the North-West passage. The Feadship’s steel hull has therefore been built to ice class and includes an advanced WASSP sonar system to explore the ocean floor. She is not being fitted with traditional stabiliser fins as these could potentially hinder the ability to retrieve the submarine in certain seas. For the first time on a yacht of this size, a gyroscope system has been fitted within the hull, with the tank deck arranged in such a way to enable traditional stabilisers to also be installed later if required.

Shinkai – or ‘Deep Sea’, in Japanese.

Measuring 3x3m and weighing a hefty 23t, the gyro is the largest unit built to date and a heavy piece of equipment for a yacht built to go far on less fuel. More weight comes from the submarine, of course, and the massive crane required to lift 7,400kg when the sub is manned. This crane has an outreach of almost 8m and will also be used to launch Project Shinkai’s limousine tender and lift the owner’s car and its crate from the aft deck to the shore. These are exceptional preconditions for a 55m yacht in terms of weight and stability, and Shinkai once again showcases Feadship’s unique ability to build superyachts in the most bespoke manner possible. The yacht also features a supremely comfortable Feadship interior, which has been designed in close cooperation with the owners by Boutsen Design.

New market segment

Next success story

Large and complex ships are part of the Meyer Group’s core competence. In the shipbuilding halls, which can be up to 504m long, ships with a length of almost 350m have been built almost exclusively for years. “Mega yachts are a new market segment that we can serve at all our three shipyards. At Meyer, it is always our ambition to position ourselves at the top – in environmental protection as well as now in yacht size. That’s why the One 50 is just the beginning of our ideas and plans”, says Thomas Weigend, Managing Director of Meyer Werft.

“We see a lot of potential in mega yachts for new environmentally friendly technologies, which we also use directly in One 50, for example the fuel cell for emission-free ship operation. We attach very great importance to this. In addition to the many competencies and skills we already have, we will also bring additional specialists from the yacht building industry into our team and strengthen the Meyer Group”, according to Malte Poelmann, Chief Technology Officer, Meyer Group. Mega yachts have the potential to become the next Meyer success story and thus also secure employment at all locations. “We are experts in building special ships, we have proven that many times. Now we are working on making mega yachts even bigger and, above all, greener”, says Mr Meyer.

uperyacht Far Far Away was designed by Inace Yachts and delivered to its owner in 2012. The works, which began in November 2019, involved important structural changes, starting from the length of the hull, which was elongated from the initial 36.7m to nearly 47m. The entire structure of the yacht was accordingly redesigned to ensure an increase in onboard space with a decisive improvement to the comfort of guests and crew and a substantial increase in navigational autonomy.

the insertion of an 8m module amidships; the lengthening of the stern platform by 1.5m; and the elongation of the forward bulb by about 1.50m. The insertion of the module, an operation carried out by Lusben’s carpentry team, involved the complete reconstruction of all the onboard systems for sanitary water, diesel lines, electric and safety, plus the supply and installation of a new watertight door, integrated with the existing management system.

AND REPAIR PROJECTS, LUSBEN.

Far Far Away, built by Brazilian shipyard Inace Yachts in 2012, was entrusted to Lusben in November 2019 with a request for some structural interventions, such as the innovative hull lengthening project. The result is an increase from the original size of 36.7m to a total of 46.9m, following from a clever set of procedures:

Among the most important interventions completed a few days ago, there were the addition of cold rooms of 9m2, a case of fresh water of 5,000l and two cases of diesel of 15,000l each – for a capacity total diesel fuel of 90,000l, compared to the initial 52,000l, the inclusion of a 9m2 laundry room, the replacement of the gyrocompasses with

a satellite and a mechanical one, the addition of a thermal imaging camera for night vision, the strengthening of watertight bulkheads and the addition of a watertight door, the installation of two new 99kW CAT generators, the installation of a 60kW stern thrusters (two) system, upgrading of the 90kW bow thruster, the installation of a new air conditioning system with four compressors and finally a new technical monitoring system for loading and transferring diesel fuel. In addition, Far Far Away underwent a total repainting of the hull and superstructure, the installation of all the electronic navigation

equipment, the refurbishment of four guest bathrooms and the transformation of the original laundry room into a storage room.

Twice as much autonomy Thanks to these and many other modifications, which required fourteen months of work, the autonomy of Far Far Away has almost doubled – reaching 8,000nm – so much so that the superyacht is now able to cruise for at least three months without ever stopping in port. A consequence of these interventions was the achievement of the double certification for the

yacht, which can be held for both private and commercial use. The extension of the hull obviously also entailed a decisive increase in volume, which mainly affected the sleeping area, with an expansion of the cabins and a passage from the original ten guests in five cabins and eight crew members to the current twelve guests (under Commercial certification) and fifteen guests (under Private certification) in seven cabins and up to nine crew members.

THE YELLOW & FINCH MARITIME CHARITY GOLF EVENT –––

F R I D AY, 3 S E P T E M B E R 2 0 2 1 BRUINISSE, THE NETHERLANDS

An event we won’t easily fore-get! ON 3 SEPTEMBER, THE NICE AND SUNNY WEATHER CONDITIONS WERE A TRUE REFLECTION OF THIS YEAR’S YELLOW & FINCH MARITIME CHARITY GOLF EVENT. AFTER ALL the restrictions for meeting each other in the past eighteen months, all the participants enjoyed the fun and successful event all the more. Together, all the participants raised EUR 3,150, which has been donated to Dutch children cancer-free foundation KiKa.

T

he eleventh edition of our charity event took place at the Golfclub Grevelingenhout golf course. Beautifully located at a stone’s throw from Lake Grevelingen, the course has everything to offer for both the experienced and novice golf player. Despite the challenging restrictions that the pandemic brought about in the past year, we were excited about this year’s amazing turn up of almost 70 participants from the maritime and offshore industry, which is similar to last year’s number of participants. Our annual tradition of playing golf while networking and enjoying Zeeland’s finest delicacies in a relaxed atmosphere was a success yet again, and the best part of this tradition was the donation of the event’s revenues to a charity that helps children.

This year, our Account Manager Rob de Kerf surprised KiKa Ambassador Sandra Terlage with a cheque for EUR 3,150 (USD 3,700). Apart from this, Ms Terlage inspired many of the participants to buy some of the KiKa merchandise, which resulted in an additional amount of EUR 1,313 (USD 1,550) for donation. Looking back at this enjoyable and fruitful charity event, we at Yellow & Finch Publishers and on behalf of KiKa, would like to thank Freudenberg, Kohler Power, Schelde Exotech, STT Group of Companies, and all the participants for their generous and valuable sponsorship.
