CRN delivers Ciao

Superyacht M/Y CIAO, the latest fully custom work of art from the CRN shipyard, has been delivered to her owner. Her unmistakable svelte profle is now gracing the Mediterranean on her inaugural cruise. The taut, fowing lines and near-vertical bow refect the decidedly dynamic personality of this sporty 52m opus. An entirely bespoke creation with a strong artisanal stamp, she has been developed with the external spaces uppermost in mind, especially their continual interplay with those inside. The all-aluminium M/Y Ciao has been designed and built by CRN in close collaboration with architecture and design studio Omega Architects, who conceived the external lines, and architects Massari Design, who created the outdoor guest areas and interiors. i. crn-yacht.com

ICON Yachts’ latest conversion project, the 70m Project Master, was pulled into shipyard’s drydock facility in Harlingen earlier this month. This time, ICON chose a vastly different style for the platform vessel – a 66m Offshore Rescue and Support Vessel – for conversion to a global world explorer and yet again, in doing so the team at ICON Yachts is capitalising on its expertise to develop conversion projects which are far from the norm. ICON presented a number of design drafts to their client, and it was this vessel that was found best suited to his listing of requirements: ultimately for a world cruiser that’s family-orientated and yet admirably suited for charter too. i. iconyachts.eu

The Sustainability Hub was created as part of the Monaco Yacht Show’s eco-friendly approach, which was initiated in 2005. The show thereby serves as a tool to raise awareness on environmental issues within the Monegasque and international yachting community.

Our pioneering approach to sustainability in organising the show, which began 18 years ago, now extends to a new dedicated exhibition at the MYS.

Gaëlle Tallarida, Managing Director of the MYS explains, “When the MYS joined the Carbon Neutral programme in 2005, we were already hell-bent on raising environmental awareness. the yachting industry had barely started taking on a ‘green attitude’ at the time. Our pioneering approach to sustainability in organising the show, which began 18 years ago, now extends to a new dedicated exhibition at the MYS. The MYS constitutes one of the industry’s major voices; a share of social responsibility that we fully assume today. Therefore, the Sustainability Hub was an obvious and logical next step for the Monaco Yacht Show. This brand-new area dedicated to eco-friendly yachting alternatives is part of our sustainability programme, which is set to be extended to the logistics and layout of the entire show, here in the port of Monaco.

The show’s themed exhibition areas have been redistributed more efciently, making it easier for the new wave of yachting customers to meet experts in their respective felds and to discover the range of products and services required to successfully complete their yachting project. The organisers are therefore revamping the Dockside Area, the Sailing Yacht Area and the Yacht Design & Innovation Hub, all three of which were launched in 2021. Be it in the water or on the docks, the Dockside Area features superyachts, tenders and all manner of services directly related to the world of yachting. Visitors can meet the shipbrokers, shipyards and designers who worked on the various yachts on display. The Sailing Yacht Area will be relocated to Quai l’Hirondelle, on the inner side of Port Hercule. The Yacht Design & Innovation Hub - dedicated to future yacht design projects – is set to triple in size, including a 100m2 upstairs conference area. >>

A relationship with the sea

“I think we’re good at what we do because we’re passionate about what we do. We treat each new project with fresh eyes as if it were our frst and never allow ourselves to become disillusioned or cynical”, says Carlo Nuvolari. “A crucial aspect of all our projects has been the fact that both of us grew up sailing. I’ve always found it bizarre that there are a lot of people in this industry, from designers to builders, who don’t go boating or have a relationship with the sea. That to me seems fundamental if you want to design or build Mryachts.”Nuvolari recalls the milestone moment when an impromptu meeting with Mike Kelsey Sr, the former owner of Palmer Johnson, led to the young design duo designing the exterior and interior of 59.5m La Baronessa (later Pearl). Delivered in 1998, she is still the largest allaluminium yacht built in the U.S. That project set them on their future trajectory and epoch-making superyachts such as Nord, Alfa Nero, Vibrant Curiosity, Lady M, Quattroelle and Atlante, but also sailing yachts such as Perini Navi’s Spirit of the C’s and Oceanco’s radical Black Pearl and many more. “We have worked together on some extraordinary projects”, declares Peter Lürssen, Lürssen CEO, “and without the creative input of Nuvolari Lenard Design these yachts would never have become so outstanding. Congratulations on the company’s 30th Anniversary.” “We appreciate working with partners who don’t shy away from a challenge”, adds Marcel Onkenhout, Oceanco CEO. “It has been a pleasure to watch Nuvolari Lenard’s designs make a positive impact on the yachting industry over the last 30 years and to have personally worked together on a number of game-changing projects that have altered what we think is possible on a superyacht. Bravo, Carlo and Dan, for your enduring passion and remarkable achievements over the last three decades. We look forward to many more iconic projects in the years to come.”

ALL PHOTOS COURTESY OF NUVOLARI LENARD. Dealing with young people who are still free of contract terms, delivery times and technical specifcations is incredibly rewarding and reminds us that design must be a free activity linked to originality, imagination and innovation.”

30 years and counting Nuvolari Lenard is one of the most active yacht design frms in the world that owes its success to its founders’ passion for design and strong relationship with the sea. Based in Venice, the studio is closely involved with the city’s academic institutions and has been an active supporter of the Venice Boat Show, which was held on 5 June this year, since its inception.

16 | SYI 2022 | Volume 17 | Issue 3 superyacht-industry.com NAVAL ARCHITECTURE & DESIGN Nuvolari Lenard are as happy creating one-of designs for superyacht shipyards Oceanco, Lürssen, Palmer Johnson, or CRN as they are designing series boats for production builders like Jeanneau-Beneteau. Over the past 30 years since the founding of the studio in 1992, in addition to yachts, the team has developed a diverse portfolio that includes aircraf and residential interiors, but their work is always defned by a profound sensibility for design in all its varied forms.

Furthermore, the keel playing ceremony of Project NL373, a 65m Nuvolari Lenard design for CRN, took place recently. The yacht will be ftted with a hybrid propulsion system which will allow the yacht to cruise at low speeds thanks to the use of electricity supplied by onboard generators. “We tried to best interpret the elegant taste desired by the owner”, says Mr Lenard. “For now, we can only say that it will fully embody the values of ‘Made in Italy’ through the expression of Italian quality.”

Carlo Nuvolari is proud of his Venetian origins and Nuvolari Lenard works closely with the Venice Boat Show organisers to coordinate lectures, technical conferences and other initiatives, including the MUVE Yacht Projects together with the Foundation of Civic Museums of Venice that each year organises a design competition where Carlo Nuvolari is on the scientifc committee and jury. This year’s edition will see an exhibition of the best projects, including two racing sailboats built by the Politecnico di Torino and Uni Trieste, in the magnifcent setting of the Arsenale. He will also present a public lecture on 1st June entitled ‘Shipowners’ Sensitivity to the Environment’ as part of a conference organised by Assomarinas. “Afer 30 years of activity it would be a shame to keep our accumulated experience in a drawer and not share it with a younger audience”, says Mr Nuvolari.

In fact, Nuvolari accompanied a group of Luiss students to the 2022 Dubai International Boat Show in March. “Our Firm has always been very active involving young people and students in the design process,” explains Valentina Zannier, “both at university’s masters and internship. We believe young generations must have a deep understanding about how creativity and functionality meet in a yacht and how these two principles are essential” “Even though I have been converting Nuvolari Lenard’s way of working for almost 20 years by equipping it with the most up-to-date design sofware”, says the studio partner Simone Feltrin, “I still push the young designers who come to us frstly to express their ideas with pencil and paper and only later to elaborate the projects using sofware and computers, in order to stimulate their creativity, which is the characteristic that distinguishes us.”

Founder and President of Azimut Benetti Group comments, “I am happy to present one of the most innovative boats ever built. Equipped with a hybrid system for long range, environment-friendly cruising and featuring a four-deck layout in a length of just 37m, this is a dream come true for modern owners who want to cruise around the world with their family and friends. In my imagination I saw a record-breaking boat, and here it is.”

Aproduct of the revolutionary vision of Paolo Vitelli, Founder and President of Azimut Benetti Group, and the creative genius of architect Stefano Righini, Benetti B.Yond 37M embodies the excellence of a new Voyager series and truly refects the style of the modern owner. Launch party In an emotional and eagerly-awaited ceremony held on 3 July at the Livorno shipyard, Benetti launched the brand new four-deck B.Yond 37M Voyager. Instead of fberglass, Benetti made an unusual choice for a boat this size and opted for a return to steel. A step back in time to the 1950s, when Benetti pioneered the introduction of metal in place of wood. For many markets, steel is a symbol of durability and solidity, which are quintessential features of a Voyager designed for long cruises. The innovative E-Mode Hybrid system by Siemens Energy makes it possible to optimise on-board energy consumption according to specifc usage profles, which translates into unprecedented CO2 and NOx emissions reductions for a yacht in this Paollocategory.Vitelli,

Simple, innovativeeco-friendly, The B.Yond 37M is the world’s greenest boat in its class, combining SCR catalytic flters - a gas control technology that uses a urea-based liquid solution already adopted in the automotive industry for Euro 6D diesel engines - with the innovative E-Mode Hybrid system by Siemens Energy, which is based on a crew-friendly integrated add-on architecture built on top of a traditional system. The result is extremely simple management, with switching possible from mechanical to electric propulsion and vice versa without the intervention of specialised personnel on board. This innovative solution ofers the freedom of four diferent operating modes, including the standout Full Electric mode for zero emission navigation, an exclusive plus that allows B.Yond 37M to enter protected marine areas or those normally of-limits to motor Theyachts.lithium battery pack also makes it possible to stay at anchor in Hotel Mode Main deck lobby. >>

Incredible design

The revolutionary concept devised by Stefano Righini, who brings all his creative fair into play, features the inclusion of a fourth deck, which makes it possible to raise all the most noble areas of the yacht and gives them an incredible panoramic view. The service area on the Lower Deck includes a walk-in wine cellar and a cold room, unusual features on a boat this size. The Main Deck provides the night area for guests, ofering four suites accessed from a panoramic lounge featuring generous windows, which Benetti calls the Playroom. Stepping up onto the Upper Deck, the living area ofers a completely unobstructed 360-degree view. Moving up still further, the Bridge Deck is set aside for the owner, while the Sun Deck provides a dining area with a pantry and an outdoor table sheltered by a hard top. Two stairways, one for guests and one for crew, provide completely separate fows, ensuring total privacy for both owner and guests. The layout is extremely fexible: the Main Deck, in addition to four guest suites that are particularly spacious for a 37m yacht, can optionally contain either the master cabin or the Playroom with In an emotional and eagerly-awaited ceremony held on 3 July at the Livorno shipyard, Benetti launched the brand’s new four-deck B.Yond 37M Voyager. with zero emissions, keeping the generators switched of and running the main on-board utilities from the batteries. This translates into time spent at anchor in harmony with nature, immersed in vibration-free silence. With the new generation of high energy density batteries, the 300kW/h pack will provide up to 8 hours of autonomy at anchor during the day and 12 hours at night. The batteries recharge in just three hours. Estimating an average annual use of 1,000 hours, of which 400 under way and the rest at anchor, fuel consumption and CO2 can be reduced by up to 24% and NOx by a maximum of 85%.

All this plus the added value of a Voyager with an incredible range almost double that of traditional navettas of the same size, or up to 8,200nm at 9kn in Eco Transfer mode, with the two diesel generators switched of and only one propulsion engine running, which reduces fuel consumption and CO2 emissions by up to 16% and NOx emissions by up to 80% compared with traditional propulsion systems.

If the captain chooses to use the cabin closest to the wheelhouse, the other one could become a seventh guest cabin. The spacious garage contains a 6.5m tender for the owner, a 4.2m rescue boat and two jet skis, for the frst time in a protected and out of sight area.

The white steel hull and aluminium superstructure express the personality and elegance of B.Yond 37M, complemented by stainless steel railings also painted white and fnished with teak handrails, in an unusual but highly efective stylistic feature. The hull was designed by Pierluigi Ausonio’s frm P.L.A.N.A. Creating a second home Open and spacious, the interior design by Benetti architect Mauro Izzo ofers even more potential for customisation, allowing the owner to express their own taste and personality on a yacht to live on as if it were a second home. This spirit has been captured to perfection by leading contemporary design brand Giorgetti, chosen by Benetti to provide the furnishings for the frst B.Yond 37M, with solutions that accommodate all the owner’s requests in an embodiment of beauty and functionality expressed through haut de gamme quality. The fne materials chosen feature a palette of natural colours, enhanced by touches of blue provided by the fabrics and accessories, standing out against the optical white walls and echoing the colour of the sea. Giorgetti’s refned and sophisticated language runs through all the yacht’s decks, telling the story of the brand’s prowess in designing spaces that form part of an overarching vision. i. benettiyachts.it

When stepping aboard from one of her two custom limo tenders, exterior and interior designers Nuvolari Lenard had a very simple objective: perfection. “When they approach the boat from any angle, they need to look and simply say, wow I like her a lot,” says Carlo Nuvolari. “That’s all I want. They just simply have to be in love with the boat.” With her timeless, elegant bow and graceful superstructure sweeping af, it’s hard not to be. “For Lurssen, the task was to build a motor yacht for a repeat client, an upgrade from his 86m Lurssen, who had many years of owning and chartering diferent types of yachts behind him. He required top-notch design and engineering as well as seagoing comfort for his family, guests and crew,” says Peter Lurssen. “The launch of Ahpo is testament to the excellent team of builders, designers and engineers we have at Lurssen and the strong relationship with the client. on the main deck is the frst of the yacht’s design attention towards fexible spaces. A large conference room af boasts as its centrepiece a beautiful custom table with an antique map of Jamaica engraved in bronze and surrounded by deep blue resin sitting underneath an eye-catching crystal chandelier. Sliding doors allow this to be a contained, private working environment. When desired, the doors open to reveal the main salon, an elegant, formal space with a self-playing Steinway piano. Further forward, another set of doors open up into the formal dining room. Having these three distinct areas together on the same deck means that as well as somewhere to relax and unwind, Ahpo is also a functional working environment and crucially one, where one’s business and pleasure can co-exist without crossing paths. Also on this deck is the bespoke wine display with individual, walk-in sections that can be tempered accordingly and which was requested right from the initial layout. An enjoyable talking point with guests – it is an element which combines both form and function. The centre of the yacht is >>

Harmonious elements of nature The early brief for the interior was to link all the elements of nature, harmoniously balanced throughout the yacht with a pallet of colourful and sophisticated materials and with a clear preference towards rich over opulent. Flowers and plants are a distinct theme on board, a favourite of the owner’s wife. The outcome is a stylish, grown-up environment with beautiful bespoke pieces of furniture framed against a more muted, tasteful Thebackground.205m2wellness area on the lower deck has real impact and is a ftting frst place that many will step aboard into. Stepping inside through the transom door, it is impossible to ignore a large bamboo grove encased in backlit frosted glass, which forms a stunning backdrop to a stylish bar on one side and a luxurious massage room on the other. In contrast to this zen atmosphere is an explosion of coloured mosaic tiles which make up the hammam and day head as well as the Jacuzzi and plunge pool that form the focus in the middle of the space. These traverse the blue spectrum from inky navy to pale sky blue and everything in between, giving the spaces a strong character within the overall theme. When at anchor, an open sea terrace means guests can enjoy their own private living room at water level thanks to a contemporary sofa and cofee table set-up. Further forward is a luxurious 12-seater cinema, complete with proper armchairs and a bespoke wallpaper that replicates the mosaic design of the spa. Just down the hall is one of the yacht’s most pleasantly surprising areas: a glass walkway through the engine room. This futuristic addition allows the owners and guests to view the impressive engines and mechanical spaces from above whenever they like; a contrast to the gentle and sof design features throughout the rest of the Aboveyacht.

Time to relax

The owner’s deck takes on a diferent theme to the formality of the deck below, one that is more relaxed and speaks of laid-back holidays with friends and family. The standout space however, has to be beyond the sliding doors and onto the af deck. Here, an enormous custom 16-seater dining table stands proud within a winter garden that can be completely open or closed to the elements thanks to a complex set of sliding and folding glass doors. This ensures that this space can be used to entertain and relax with family and friends Past the dining area and the second set of sliding doors is an af deck dominated by two semi-circles of comfortable, informal sofas, providing ample space for everyone to come together afer a meal and relax or take in the sunsets and sunrises.

Unparalleled view Forward on this deck is the bridge. Rare to have this high up, it provides the crew with unparalleled views for manoeuvring the 115m long, 18m wide yacht. Designed more like a guest space than a traditional crew area with premium woods and leathers, it is smart and high tech. The unique location also means the ship’s ofce and captain’s cabin can be together and away from the guest areas, and enables perhaps Ahpo’s most standout, innovative feature: the duplex owner’s apartment.

Spacious and cosy

The owner’s apartment is made up of a large 245m2 master cabin on the owner’s deck and a 95m2 panoramic salon on the upper deck above, joined together by a grand, private staircase. The owner’s cabin is spacious and cosy all at once, providing ample privacy from the outside world. The design is light, elegant and muted, making this a relaxing place for sleeping and winding down. The custom fabric headboard replicates the mosaic found in the master bathrooms and represents the maple tree leaves and blue birds which recur in the room décor. A customdesigned breakfast table in the same tinted lacewood timber as the rest of the room and mother of pearl sits at the front of the room for quiet moments, while two reclining sofas fank either side of the bed. The private deck space for this room is similarly cosy and private: a semi-circle >> Owner’s suite. Formal dining room. Board room.

“This is the essence of the design,” says Mr Nuvolari. “This is the correct amount of visibility for this design, because if somewhere has complete view, then there is a lack of privacy from the outside which we didn’t want for the bedroom of the master cabin.” It is a salon instead that enjoys these incredible views, somewhere you are much more likely to want to enjoy a view from with sofas placed facing forward to make the most of the line of sight. Two beautiful, custom desks fank each end of the salon, turning the room into a private ofce if so desired.

There are seven guest cabins on board with two on the owner’s deck, four on the main deck and one on the lower deck. The large cabins on the main deck are similarly beautifully appointed and enjoy the view from the iconic semi-circle windows – the only running theme between this boat and the owner’s previous yacht according to Nuvolari Lenard. The cabin on the lower deck is opposite the cinema room in the wellness area, an ideal location for an active younger guest who wants to make the most of their days in the beach club and on the water. There are 37 crew on board Ahpo and so crew areas have been redesigned to give more privacy, including a large crew mess, a separate crew lounge and a private crew gym. sofa and cofee table face out to sea on recessed balconies on each side, cocooned into a quiet corner thanks to the glass bulwarks and the interior of the cabin, providing two of the most quietly delightful and unique areas on board.

Efciency and the desire to be as green as possible was also a big drive behind the engineering on board, and the yacht is equipped with a state-of-the-art exhaust afer-treatment system that reduces nitrogen oxide levels and generates less noise and vibration. Similarly, every diesel generating set is equipped with an additional heat exchanger, which is used to heat up an extra heat cycle connecting the pool, Jacuzzi and service water systems. This helps to reduce any thermal energy loss by repurposing it and reduces the need for electric heating systems elsewhere on board. i. lurssen.com

At 50m overall with a lightweight, aluminium, fast-displacement hull, she is the second in Heesen’s sub-500GT Nova Plus class, a design that emphasizes performance and efciency, powered by twin MTU 2000-series M72 V12s. Her remarkable maximum speed of just under 20 knots, frugal fuel consumption, and a draf of just 2.15m, makes her the most efcient yacht of her type built in the ANetherlands.distinguished yacht with a striking profle characterized by a vertical bow and bold spray rails, along with her Dutch pedigree as a guarantee of premium quality, ELA was also available with a remarkably short delivery time when she caught the attention of her owners. With just three months between purchase and delivery they worked with interior designer Cristiano Gatto and the Heesen team to personalize the yacht to suit their family “Togetherrequirements.withtheclient, we revisited all the loose furniture, inside and out, selecting new materials for all the upholstery and the key items from Paola Lenti, B&B Italia, Poltrona Frau, and Promemoria”, says Mr Gatto. “But more importantly, we designed bespoke pieces, such as tables, sofas, and lamps, all beautifully crafed by Italian ateliers, who delivered them in record time.” Ela’s twelve guests are accommodated in six staterooms, with the owners’ suite on the main deck forward and the remaining fve cabins – a full beam VIP, two doubles and two twins – on the lower deck. Besides the beauty of her design, Ela is also the frst Heesen to sport a peak-shaving battery system. “This, in my opinion, makes the yacht genuinely efcient and more sustainable”, says Peter van der Zanden, Head of Design & Development at the Thereshipyard.arenumerous practical advantages ofered by this so-called ‘virtual generator’, such as a seamless storage of energy and improved generator efciency with lower emissions, lowering fuel and maintenance “Atcosts.Heesen, we believe in continuous research and constant innovation”, says Mr van der Zanden. “We strive to refne our yachts and present the owners with solutions that are at the forefront of technology, to improve efciency and enhance the on-board experience.”

Music and video are essential for relaxing on board, and so for the audio in the premium areas, both inside and out, Sonance speakers were used. Most importantly, all areas are equipped with a stand-alone Sonos player which can also play signals via Airplay 2, so the customisation of musical choices and the ultimate audio quality is guaranteed everywhere. The upper deck’s exterior area features a 4K video projection system concealed in the ceiling, and everything is controlled from a handy iPad. The AV integrated system is managed through a Crestron CPU. The Videoworks interface for iPad allows for the easy and intuitive control of the audio and video systems. The control unit also integrates a crew call system directly from the iPad, so communication with the crew is quick and easy.
