Plane Sailing in Boat Show Season My feet have not long landed on home soil since returning from the whirlwind Monaco Yacht Show, where new concepts, exciting launches and innovations were unveiled, but I’ve hit the ground running, and am keeping my sights firmly ahead as we launch straight into the upcoming METSTRADE show in Amsterdam (page 12), celebrating its 30th anniversary this year, and the Fort Lauderdale Boat Show (page 30) taking place in October. I extend my condolences to those who have been affected by the devastating hurricanes in recent months, and congratulate you all on what has been an inspiring show of bravery and camaraderie in people’s best efforts to get back on their feet. The opening of FLIBS in the face of adversity is something to be commended. And our admiration continues, in this issue, with two remarkable yachts being highlighted. The simply stunning and unmistakable Pink Gin VI (page 42), the largest carbon fibre custom-built sloop in the world, and the show-stopping 85m motor yacht Areti (page 24), the fourth yacht to be delivered by German shipyard Lürssen in 2017. I had the pleasure to step aboard both vessels at the Monaco Yacht Show, and though they are very different boats, they both share an extraordinary level of design detail, innovation, and passion from their owners. Areti’s interior volume totals 2,850GT, giving her an enormous beam of almost 15m, and an extremely spacious interior, while Pink Gin’s two topsides openings requiring specialist engineering that form a balcony in the Owner’s suite and side entry to the main lobby are among many of her stand-out features. This issue, we spotlight two understated but highly necessary categories of the marine industry, the first of which is paint and coatings systems. With many of today’s iconic superyachts choosing Jotun MegaImperial antifouling for underwater protection, it is the company’s proven performance, growing reputation of reliability and dry dockings that is making its name (page 56). Meanwhile, it’s the Awlgrip Superyacht brand reputation for seamless high quality results, along with the unparalleled professional capability of its teams, that ensures AkzoNobel continues to be in demand from superyacht builders across the globe (page 59). And within our second category, stabilisers, Seakeeper is ‘making waves’ with its patented cooling system and active control technology (page 35), while CMC Marine, the Pisa-based industrial manufacturer of stabilisation systems, and stern and bow thrusters for yachts and passenger ships over 16m, launched a raft of new international debuts at the Cannes Yachting Festival in September 2017 (page 32). news in brief Amels 188 Superyacht Sold Dutch luxury yacht builder Amels is proud to confirm the sale of the first 57.70m Amels 188 from the Limited Editions range. The new Tim Heywood design – the first to feature the Amels Hybrid Switchboard with battery power – will be delivered in less than a year in the summer of 2018 with a stunning and innovative interior design by Reymond Langton. Built to travel the oceans with high levels of comfort and low noise and vibrations, the first Amels 188 is expected to cruise worldwide.
Benetti Announces the Sale of the 63m Custom FB276
Construction of the 70m FB273 Motor Yacht Alkhor Progresses
Benetti has announced the sale of a custom 63m FB276 to a German owner, introduced by Kurt Lehmann of Yacht Moments. The yacht, which consists of a steel hull and an aluminium superstructure, boasts an interior is by Bannenberg & Rowell, and an exterior design collaboration between Benetti and Giorgio M. Cassetta Design. The defining feature of the yacht, located on the upper deck, is a spacious owner’s suite, which offers the owner 162m2 of extreme privacy, including the owner’s cabin, two bathrooms, a walk-in wardrobe and a separate living area with sofa and television.
Due to be launched in the summer of 2019, construction work on the on the full custom superyacht 70m FB273 Alkhor designed by Benetti gained momentum in August, when the steel and aluminium hull and superstructure were joined at the Livorno shipyard. Developed on six decks, Alkhor presents a layout featuring six double guest cabins and an owner suite, with plenty of indoor and outdoor spaces for socialising and privacy. The exteriors, based on a concept by the shipyard’s technical office, offer a large swimming pool in the bow area on the Main Deck and ample sunbathing areas.
Dynamiq GTT 115 Hybrid Launched Monaco-based yacht builder Dynamiq has announced the launch of the GTT 115, designed in conjunction with design Studio F. A. Porsche. “The launch is the culmination of a long process of design and development to introduce a new kind of superyacht to the market,” says Sergei Dobroserdov, CEO of Dynamiq. “The modern gentlemen’s superyacht, the GTT 115 draws on the latest technology to combine comfortable high-speed cruising over 21 knots with efficient fuel consumption and long range of more than 3,400 nautical miles.”

news in brief Maltese Falcon Successfully Completes First Ever Sailing Yacht Sea Trials of Kymeta KyWay Terminals Kymeta, the operator of the world’s first Globalised Network, and exclusive superyacht distribution partner of e3 Systems has revealed that the Maltese Falcon, the iconic 89m sailing vessel, has now successfully completed the first ever sailing yacht sea trials of Kymeta KyWay terminals, which have been conducted over the past four months. During the trials the yacht was equipped with both single and multiple-terminal configurations. Upon commercial release of yacht solutions, the terminals will be bundled with Kymeta’s KÃLO internet access services, powered by the IntelsatOne Flex for Maritime service. The trial used capacity on three Intelsat assets, IS-29e (Caribbean), IS-32e Wide Beam (Bermuda/Atlantic), and IS-905 (Europe).
55m Steel Hulled Fast Displacement Laurentia is Delivered Heesen Yachts has announced the delivery of YN 17755, formerly known as Project Alida, and now christened Laurentia by her new owners. The 55m steel-hulled motor yacht sets a new standard in superyacht performance, combining efficiency, performance and style in a design package of 740GT, with elegant yet muscular clean lines by Omega Architects.
Three New Design Concepts Launched by Heesen at Monaco Yacht Show Dutch shipyard, Heesen Yachts, kicked off the start of the Monaco Yacht Show by unveiling three new design concepts. The yachts included a 66m, named project Avanti, designed by the renowned Winch Design and described as a “pocket megayacht”, the 83m Maximus, designed by Clifford Denn and said to be “a concept to get discussion going”, and a 78m, whose exterior designer is yet to be announced.

news in brief Malcolm McKeon Yacht Design Confirms Design Contract for 78m ‘Mega Sloop’ Project MM78, a 78m ‘mega sloop’ designed by Malcolm McKeon Yacht Design, is said to be the result of many months’ research and development, and is the studio’s largest to date. Impetus for the design came from the client’s wish to have clear 360-degree views from the cockpit without the need for a flybridge. Designed for cruising with a lifting keel and a square top mainsail, the yacht will feature fully automated sailing systems which will avoid the need for any human contact with load bearing sheets.
MAN Rollo Supplies Fuel-Efficient Engines for Motor Yacht Anemeli MAN Rollo has announced the supply of two MAN diesel engines with an output of 1,397kW at 2,300RPM for motor yacht Anemeli. Built by Van der Valk Shipyard in Waalwijk, The Netherlands, and designed by Guido de Groot in collaboration with Ginton Naval Architects, the yacht is part of the Flybridge series, and is built entirely of aluminium.

news in brief Damen Introduces the 56m SeaXplorer 55 Joining the DAMEN SeaXplorer range is the latest addition from the Dutch shipyard, the 56m SeaXplorer 55. Unveiled at the Monaco Yacht Show, the new high-volume yacht with a 1,090GT offers expedition capability, including 30 days of full luxury autonomy off-the-beaten-track and IMO Polar Code compliance for visiting Arctic and Antarctic waters. “The SeaXplorer 55 will be at home just as much in the South of France as it is in South Georgia Island,” said commercial director Rose Damen.

German yacht builder Nobiskrug announced a collaboration with Winch Design at the Monaco Yacht Show, revealing the design for a new 85m superyacht. A striking dark blue hull and snow-white superstructure set the tone for this edgy, modern design. “This 85m concept marks our first collaboration with Nobiskrug, and we are proud to finally reveal the result of the team’s hard work,” said Andreas Iseli, Head of Yacht Exteriors at Winch Design.

Italian family-owned shipyard, Rossinavi, has launched two new vessels – Aurora and Endeavour II. Both entirely custom in their design, they mark a renewed focus on bespoke commissioning and yacht design for the Italian shipyard. With these two yachts, Rossinavi states that it is celebrating its point of difference as the only ‘super yacht atelier’ by exploring the rarity of individual components, material innovation and emphasising style.

Yachtlite One of Yachtliteâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s specialties and special solutions is the adaptation of light to existing conditions, such as in the case of refits. Conversions are often much more complicated than new constructions. The featured image depicts a successful solution for a now lightflooded bar made of onyx. Yachtlite devised the technical planning of the lighting solution down to the smallest detail and produced and supplied the illumination, and the whole project was implemented in collaboration with partners. The entire bar lights up homogeneously, including the narrow sides and the smallest of details. t the time of writing, the annual figures for the global superyacht fleet have just been released showing that the members of the hISWA holland Yachting group have consolidated their strong position in terms of market share with a growth from 17.7% to 21.6% over the last three years. results in the global superyacht sector are a little like the waves on which its scions sail, and there is rarely, if ever, linear growth. While enjoying record years like 2015 – itself a logical outcome of the flurry of orders placed once it became clear that the economic crisis that started in 2008 had run its course – it is far more instructive to take a medium-term view to see how things are developing. The dutch market share has continued to grow over the past three years and we expect this to be the case for the foreseeable future.

Together, the yards and the specialised supply companies – all located within a radius of just 200km – have navigated the stormy waters of recession on various occasions, leveraging their individual and collective experience. We are used to some years being leaner in terms of deliveries, but that all depends on the pipeline. What is certain today, is that the dutch are heading in the right direction, despite the challenges the superyacht sector as a whole faces due to the current geopolitical situation. We have a clear strategy of meeting these challenges head on, one which revolves around focusing on the dutch dnA of the maritime world and our rich heritage, moving forward based on these strengths. So, wherever you are reading this in the world, if you are considering a superyacht build or looking for suppliers, holland should certainly be your first port of call. Hydromar Flexibility not bureaucracy When rob montijn joined hydromar in 1983, the progressive mindset prevalent there encouraged his own curiosity in developing a wide range of hydraulics for yachting. “Almost all the products in our range today have grown out of full custom products from the 1980s and ‘90s – back in those days we had to invent and manufacture many parts ourselves, as so little was ready-made and available. I became responsible for guaranteeing the flexibility required in yacht building without compromising on the high quality that yacht builders demand. “our products were soon in demand from yards creating superyachts of up to a 100m
and more. This was when I understood that the bureaucratic approach many of these yacht builders deploy did not fit the hydromar philosophy. based on this experience, we decided that the company performed best with a focus on high-quality yacht building that rests on cooperation and flexibility by both supplier and yard. “It is very important that hydromar be part of the construction process so that our knowledge of machining, shipbuilding and hydraulics can benefit all parties involved. Welcome to the brave new world of superyacht rigging. “When I joined rondal 30 years ago, wooden masts only existed for the classic flat-bottomed yachts. The most modern material for spars was aluminium. back then, a superyacht rig at
rondal was a stick for a 65-footer, corresponding to a total mast length of some 25m. In-mast furling, not in-boom furling, was the key to success. “In those early days, we would step something like ten masts every year. The procedures were relatively simple and we didn’t use safety harnesses, helmets or headsets – you just rolled up your sleeves and got on with the job. Standing rigging was made from wire until it was replaced by rod rigging – a solid metal cable, which was stronger but still very heavy. “rigging systems and yacht building have truly come a long way over the past few decades. I’ve witnessed much of the evolution in terms of the adoption of modern techniques and materials in superyacht rigging during my time at rondal. I expect the ingenuity and dedication of our craftsmen and engineers to yield just as many exciting innovations in the years to come.”

elivered in july 2017, Areti has spent her first summer cruising the mediterranean with her owners on board. A similar design to the owner’s previous yacht, baring the same subtle cream hull with white superstructure and whisper grey accents, she possesses a much younger and sportier profile. completely bespoke and built to the serial builder-owner’s exacting requirements, Areti is a stunning feat of design and construction. tasked with a complex assignment to keep the design in line with the passenger yacht code (pyc), Winch design has given the yacht a sleek and perfectly balanced signature, complemented by a traditional but fresh interior with an American classic twist. this has been achieved with aesthetic appeal that masterfully disguises the various pyc requirements, such as the wood panelled areas in the escape ways and staircases that are made from nonflammable aluminium and resin, and the double door entrances to the crew cabins, which have been avoided in the guest cabins by way of a sliding fire door. What the pyc code does allow, however, is the capacity for 24 guests (including the owner) on board at any one time, attended to by a team of 25 crew.
Family Affair A combination of straight grain and figured makore timber are a basis for the traditional styling and enhance the luxurious interior, punctuated by an array of neutral fabrics. A tool bench and workshop with a bike display above make repairs the easiest of tasks with custom made fibreglass fixings in which the bikes can hang. brushed steel frames the glass and light floods in from the corridor. on the lower deck aft is the relaxation spa. the whole expanse is a wet area and displays a hand-crafted rose mosaic from famous serbian mosaic artist Andjelka radojevic. the entire area is designed around “the theme of hot and cold”, explains Winch design’s head of interior design, nick brosnan, with guests benefiting from a steam room, sauna, full depth plunge pool (at a chilling 4°c) and a hot tub. Guests can take advantage of the full banya experience, including the traditional accessory display of birch and eucalyptus branches, timber knives and felt hats. from the experience showers, which have multitemperature, light, acoustic and aroma settings, guests can migrate to the adjacent wet loungecum-beach club. the flooring is oiled teak planked to blend the interior and exterior, and opens via a large transom door to the swim platform, with a descending staircase into the sea which has become a popular design feature of lürssen yachts. On the Sun Deck venturing aft on the owner’s deck, one is greeted with what is arguably one of the most beautiful areas of the yacht – a generous sky lounge. the upper aft deck where a custom teak table dominates the upper aft deck and can comfortably sit sixteen guests. on the bridge deck guests can soak in the custom-made jacuzzi (with the cycle team in mind) in which twelve people can loosen up after a session in the gym, while on the serene exterior deck spaces provide numerous other calm zones where one can feel at home. retractable awnings with customised up lighting cover each exterior area. the sundeck is the pièce de résistance. this is an outstanding place to sunbathe while observing the picturesque views. An unimposing windshield keeps the area sheltered and one can see the beautiful design of what has become known as the whale tail of the yacht. powered by two mtu engines of 2,000kW each, Areti reaches a top speed of 17kn and has a range of 6,000nm. With a keel laying date prior to 2016 the engines and auxiliary engines are fully compliant with the applicable imo air pollution requirements, and elastically mounted equipment ensures that the yacht runs quietly, while four fin zerospeed stabilisers reduce wave-generated motion ensuring a smoother, more enjoyable cruising experience underway and at anchor.

the Fort lauderdale international Boat show owned and presented By the Marine indUstries association oF soUth Florida (MiasF) and Managed and prodUced By show ManageMent, the Fort laUderdale international Boat show draws hundreds of leading marine businesses from around the world and thousands of boating enthusiasts who come to browse, buy and learn about what is new on the water. Beset by devastation caused by hurricane irma just a month prior to the show, the big clean up began almost instantly, and the 2017 event looks set to be as big as ever.
Variety is Key Fort lauderdale, Florida, will host the 58th Fort lauderdale international Boat show (FliBs) on 1-5 november 2017. Boasting more than 900 exhibitors, show exhibits range from yacht builders and designers to exotic cars and brokerage yachts. a wide variety of boats will also be on display from sport fishers and cabin cruisers to motor yachts and catamarans, with over 1,000 vessels in total. the largest in-water boat show in the world, FliBs takes place at seven locations connected by a network of water and land transportation. show locations include the Bahia Mar Fort lauderdale Beach hotel & yachting centre, the hall of Fame Marina, las olas Municipal Marina, hilton Fort lauderdale Marina, sails Marina, hyatt regency pier 66 Marina, and the greater Fort lauderdale/Broward county convention centre.
attendance at the 2016 five-day show was up five per cent compared to the 2015 event, and among all segments of boats on display, the largest increase was boats in-water under 30m in length, which grew 2.9%. “simply put, our sales results at the 2016 Fort lauderdale international Boat show were amazing,” said chuck cashman, chief revenue officer of MarineMax, one of the show’s largest exhibitors. “Quality and innovation continue to be extremely important in driving new boat sales. additionally, our entry into charter facilitated several larger boat sales. all our core brands experienced nothing short of excellent results. overall, the dollars sold at the show were very close to an all-time record.”

uilt on experience gained over the years, and advancing the development process that began with the launch of the Stabilis Electra system, its three latest innovations are stabilising systems for three specific yachts, designed to extend the range of installations. They consist of the SR Short Range system, the HS High Speed system and the LR Long Range systems.
Three Systems
The HS High Speed system designed for planing yachts with speeds over 24kn.
Developed to transfer Stabilis Electra technology to boats under 20m in length, the SR Short Range System joins the state-of-the-art electric engine Brushless Torque (available in three sizes) to a gear box. Characterised by a unique design, the new system ensures maximum compactness, reduced weight, a low energy consumption and simplified installation. This system can also be powered at 24V DC.
The HS High Speed and LR Long Range systems have been designed for planing yachts with speeds over 24kn, and for displacement or semidisplacement hulls, respectively. The HS system is born from an evolution of the SE Stabilis Electra System, and proposes several novelties compared to the previous range, which consist of: an optimised profile of the blades (guaranteeing better performance and further reducing resistance), the use of new electronics for reduced encumbrance and higher performance (which allows the control of different surfaces, such as helm or intruder), together with the stabilising fins. The new LR system, meanwhile, is designed to be installed on board displacement or semidisplacement boats. This new product presents remarkable benefits, including more compact actuators with the same power of the equivalent SE system, higher performances, a new blade geometry designed for displacement boats, the ability to install blades up to 5sqm, and new electronics with the option to integrate – and control – eight control surfaces (two pairs of blades, helms, etc.). CMC Marine has also included the addition of inertial detectors that enable the analysis of roll, pitch and yaw movements, to better control the platforms.

The product of radical innovation, the three systems are in response to feedback and input from owners and shipyards, who have highlighted a need for a specific type of stabilisation that has, until now, remained unsatisfactory. Drawing on the latest technology to deliver an enhanced performance, together with further weight reductions, low energy consumption and even simpler installation, the HS High Speed and LR Long Range systems also provide the option of integrating and controlling different support surfaces (rudder or intruder) in conjunction with the stabilising fins. The profile of the blades has also been upgraded and they are now available in a range of new sizes, up to 5sqm. The aim, as always, is to improve performance, which is guaranteed by a new design that significantly reduces resistance.

Automotive in the past two decades, just as in the superyacht industry, the average amount of glass surface on an automotive vehicle has significantly increased. demand for more luminous cabins, wider, improved sight: these elements are the main objectives of the designers that compete to increase the surface of glass on board every new model. BCE has taken on the challenge from the designers and has glazed some of the most stunning super cars, such as the dendrobium by williams, the Bugatti EB110, the Cp autosports E-taxi and even the futuristic glazing of the marchi mobile elemment.

glazing solutions. the railway industry often requires several leading glass technologies to be integrated into one product, similar to those within the superyacht industry. heatable glass to melt ice and mist, ultraresistant glass to cope with all kinds of harsh weather conditions, special coatings and interlayers for solar and sound control, and integrated systems for multi-functionality are just some examples of glazing technologies that are used for railway vehicles today. “anyone in the glass industry can sell and takeon a project, that’s the easy part,” says nanda mantjes, BCE yacht glazing sales director. “we distinguish ourselves by only accepting a project if all facets of our service can meet the time schedule of the yard and we can fully commit to a flawless cooperation with a timely delivery and installation of our beautiful products.”

T
he largest carbon fibre custom-built sloop in the world, Pink Gin Vi is no ordinary sailing yacht. Built by finnish shipyard Baltic yachts, and launched in july 2017, the 53.34m beauty boasts a spectacular silver hull and expansive hot pink sails that billow in the gentle breeze, swelling out bold and striking. six years in the making, refined attention to detail is the calling card of her design, with judel/Vrolijk & co. responsible for the naval architecture, and the inventiveness of design unlimited for the stunning interior and cockpit ergonomics. intended primarily for world cruising, the yacht features a straight stem and counter stern above the water, and a torpedo-style lifting bulb keel beneath it. two topsides openings requiring specialist engineering that form a balcony in the owner’s suite and side entry to the main lobby are among many stand-out features. throughout the yacht, surface finishes and textures play an important role with select materials used in unusual ways to create a tactile look. an eclectic mixture of stained oak joinery, metallic finishes and sumptuous velvets and leathers create a warm, inclusive ambience. from the velvet-lined drawers, bespoke carpet
(where inspiration was taken from a scarf) and monogrammed clothes hangers, to the subtle differences in each of the bathrooms in the sand cast hand-finished hardware, each element has been meticulously chosen, complemented by curated international artwork and bespoke loose furniture that catches the eye at every turn. “working on Pink Gin Vi has been a great and exciting challenge. the new yacht is not so much an evolution of the previous Pink Gin, but a revolution in design; a superyacht that reflects the personality and passions of the owner,” says mark tucker, director at design unlimited.

Golden hues and a bamboo bed take centre stage in the owner’s cabin, partnered by a bespoke stingray-skin topped desk by harcourt london, featuring laser-cut cow horn inlays. wood panelling artwork by cuban artist roberto diago creates a feature wall in the owner’s cabin, while statement works of art by fellow contemporary cuban sculptor and illustrator roberto fabelo adorn the corridors, from sketched upon silk prints to stone statues, illuminated by natural sunlight that floods in from above through the well-positioned skylights. in addition to the owner’s suite with separate study and dressing areas, the interior layout boasts a further five luxuriously appointed en suite guest cabins, accommodating up to ten guests, and four spacious crew cabins, all Pyc

Pink Gin Vi is also full of innovative engineering features. her carbon fibre/corecell foam hull was built in three parts for better access during construction, greater accuracy and a quicker build time. each part was scanned to create a 3d image, which allowed the build team to assemble the hull with millimetre accuracy. together with the deck moulding, the carbon shell weighs just 18tons, a fraction of the yacht’s overall displacement of 250tons.

while a deep, heavy keel is required to counter-balance the 67.9m mast (built by rondal in holland) and its vast spread of sail to ensure an exceptional sailing performance, being able to reduce draft when at anchor from an enormous 7m to just under 4.5m can be useful. three hydraulic cylinders move the fin and bulb keel into a choice of three locked positions providing shallow draft at anchor and deep draft when sailing. keeping the keel aligned is a carbon fibre casing which took two months to build using 200 layers of carbon. the keel was designed and built in conjunction with aPm in italy (all metal components except bulb) and composites engineers Gurit. one of the more intricate pieces of engineering is the stern bathing platform and stairway which folds out from the transom to
form an easy transition from deck to sea level. a bathing ladder, shower, lighting and guardwires all fold back into the transom leaving it perfectly flush while underway. car power steering technology has been developed by Baltic yacht’s engineers and esoro, a swiss specialist engineering company, to provide the helmsman with a better sensation of ‘feel’ enabling him to experience how the yacht is responding. Baltic yachts has also gone to great lengths to reduce vibration and noise levels by redesigning machinery mounts, ‘floating’ cabin modules on rubberised insulators and designing specialist composite sound shields for generators which has helped reduce sound readings to exceptionally low levels. with a cruising speed of 13kn, Pink Gin displays a plethora of design and innovation, and will set new benchmarks in super-sailing.

Nautiq, the New Smart Infotainment Solution FOLLOWING THE LAUNCH OF OCULUS TECHNOLOGIES’ BRAND-NEW GUEST INFORMATION SOLUTION AT THIS YEAR’S MONACO YACHT SHOW, THE COMPANY’S co-founders, Kim Jansen and Stefan van Cleef, explain the reality behind the creative process of turning a concept in to a viable solution for the yachting industry.

culus Technologies B.V specialise in infotainment for the Yacht, Cruise and Aviation industries. The company, based in The Netherlands, was established in 2009, quickly developing recognition for their infotainment and bespoke solutions, particularly in the superyacht sector. Renowned for their expertise in hardware, software and design, Oculus Technologies boasts a fast-growing product portfolio and dynamic team focused on innovation, creativity and cutting-edge technology.
Oculus Technologies is renowned for its product innovation and the yachting industry has a reputation for very high expectations. So, just how difficult is it to create a new product that is truly innovative, and yet both useful and purposeful? Stefan van Cleef (Creative Director): Whatever the target market, whatever the level of expectation, a
product always has one goal. It needs to be a standardised (and widely available) solution to a problem, market need or requirement. The fact that our target market sets out such high expectations means that any product creation process must remain incredibly dynamic and involves more in-depth measures when it comes to really trying to understand the exact needs of the end user. Products may need to have a generic application but still should be able to evoke a feel of exclusivity and engage on a personal level whilst embracing innovation and the latest technology. Kim Jansen (Technical Director): All product innovation is the result of an initial idea, whether client or supplier driven, that undergoes numerous revisions until it is refined for use and practical application. Creating a new product for the yachting industry brings

about its own unique set of additional challenges. Market research and client feedback is often impossible to truly achieve so getting to understand the actual demands of the end user can be a very slow process. Balancing that with innovation, technical development, engineering and financial calculations is a complex journey.
How did the idea for this new product come about? Stefan: About a year ago, myself and Peter, CEO of Oculus Technologies, were discussing how our current product YachtEye solves a problem. How, via the means of onboard TV screens or touch-screens, it makes yacht and journey related information accessible to guests and owners aboard superyachts, as well as making crew life easier and enhancing the overall hospitality experience. We then began talking about what we could add or change to YachtEye to further increase the level of wellbeing for everyone on board and make it more accessible to all yachts, not just the largest. Before long, we were creating a completely new product; a brand-new solution that could solve various problems for both crew and guests in their quest for excellent service and assured security. The more we talked about the concept, the better we came to understand that the problems came down to sharing information. In other words, communication. And that is how our latest product was born.

What was the next step? Kim: To develop the idea into a product, we were very focused on ensuring we had the right people working on the product development. The new innovation has a lot of technical challenges. We wanted to play to all the strengths we had at our disposal, not just from within Oculus Technologies, but from third parties to ensure that we had the very best skill set to work with, as well as insights from other industries.
How did you then take it from concept to product development? Kim: It felt like a very natural process. It was a new product, but in some ways, it didn’t really feel like a new concept. I felt that we had been discussing the value of sharing information through the means of smart communication on and off for years; the idea of ‘how can we support the owner or guest to be more connected?’. Not only to the yacht but more importantly with its crew, fellow guests and all those specifics relating to the very trip they are undertaking. From the technical side, it was how do we make the concept physically bridge the gaps between marine technology, hospitality services, local information, safety and ultimately the overall satisfaction of the luxury travel guest. This key user focus became integral to my part in the development and ensuring the concept remained focused.

How did you decide what ideas and features to incorporate?
So, is this the moment where you find out if the refined initial idea stands a chance?
Stefan: This is where we are reliant on user and market analysis. We had to make decisions based on what we knew our target market was looking for in terms of solutions, problems to solve, budgets, etc., and what they would embrace. One major issue for us was that despite all efforts, we simply did not have enough user and market analysis available to make what we felt were face based decisions. The yachting industry itself does not have a lot of market data available in comparison to other markets and the target groups have not been subject to extensive research, especially not when it comes to creating new products.
Stefan: To some extent. It is certainly the moment where we collate all that has happened up to this point into an end goal. This is where the ideas have to be formally brought together to showcase the entire concept: from what we envisage to how it works in reality to what is needed to achieve it. The team mapped out diagrams, scenarios, draft designs and vision and mood boards. We then brought in an interaction and graphic designer to challenge us and create a proposal for a first version of the end-user side of the product. We focused on those features within the product which represented value to the user – those features we believed people would benefit from.
Kim: We also had to consider the technical and engineering side. Could we turn our concept in to a reality? We still needed a baseline to ensure we were continuously working towards a saleable and useful product. We had neither the time nor budget to delve deeper in to research. The only thing we could really rely on was our own gut feeling and experience, which in all honesty is just not enough. We therefore decided to define a first MVP (minimal viable product). It was to be based on our gut feeling and to be tested as soon as was possible. We committed to putting all our skills and efforts into the MVP, most importantly, knowing that we might fail. We were prepared to just learn.

Kim: As part of the process we worked closely with Apollo Media, a team of ‘magicians’ when it comes to creative coding. They took the designs of the interaction and graphic designer to build an App in Framer which we could then test with the market. Our end-product was never, and is not intended, to only be an App, but this was the fastest and most accessible way to test with the market. We had pre-aligned industry professionals willing to test the product and the results of those tests will be the moment of truth. Those results steer the next phase. This is when the internal dream identifies with its external reality.

Our ambition was a design that drew on the Amels DNA and heritage, but didn’t simply reproduce existing details.

tretching 111m in length, and named Pollux (an orange-hued evolved giant star approximately 34 light-years from the sun in the northern constellation of Gemini), the exterior design by H2 Yachts has been carefully proportioned to allow for the large aft decks and the large swimming pool on Main Deck. Sporting a sophisticated tonal paint scheme with metallic silver and jet black gloss superstructure with high-polish stainless steel grill and cloud white hull, her sharp surfaces and edges play with light. “Our ambition was a design that drew on the Amels DNA and heritage, but didn’t simply reproduce existing details,” says Jonny Horsfield, Director of H2 Yacht Design. “We have looked forward to the future design direction of the Amels fleet, whilst maintaining a timeless look that captures the pinnacle of Amels yacht building.”

Specially Developed for Superyachts Jotun has been working with silyl acrylate technology since the 1990s, with silyl based products applied on more than 10,000 marine vessels worldwide. Jotun is widely recognised as the industry’s leader in this specialist antifouling technology. silyl acrylate antifoulings are less dependent on vessel movement, providing higher flexibility with regards to vessel activity and speed, which is recommended for low activity vessels like superyachts. this is achieved by the closely controlled reaction between seawater and the silyl acrylate based resin, converting it from water insoluble to water soluble. relatively low activity of these yachts reduces the erosion rate of standard ion exchange antifoulings, so the choice of antifouling technology is important to ensure sufficient fouling protection of the hull surface, even when
the yacht is static, with minimal build-up of leached layers, which is necessary to maintain the hull fouling free.
Leached Layers ‘leached layer’ is a layer at the surface of an exposed antifouling where the composition has changed. all the water-soluble components in this layer have been dissolved and the biocides released. the remaining structure is, therefore, full of voids and fragile with reduced mechanical strength. all antifouling paints develop a ‘leached layer’. a thin layer of inert product is inevitable and shows that the paint is self-polishing and working as it should. however, an excessive thickness of ‘leached layer’ can have a negative effect, as the efficiency of the biocide release is reduced by the build-up of leached layer.

seawater, the silyl ester group reacts in a very controlled way, as the level of hydroxyl ions is constant in the world’s oceans making it easy to predict the exact reaction rate. the covalent bond being disrupted in the silyl ester is much stronger than the ionic bonds in the ion exchange technologies under seawater exposure. it is possible to fine-tune and tailor the coating specification to suit a specific yachts’ requirements using: voyage factor, average speed and average water temperature.

particle’s properties. the coated particles are changed to become hydrophobic (water repellent) instead of hydrophilic (water attracting) preventing water ingress into the coating and reducing the formation of leached layer. When the predetermined amount of seawater has penetrated the antifouling’s surface layer, the particle’s coating reacts with the hydroxyl ions (hydractive) separating the coating from the soluble particle, allowing the remainder of the particle to dissolve. this provides a controlled release of biocide, protecting the hull from fouling with predictable performance. using the hydractive technology, combines a) a reduced leached layer, which improves the efficiency of the antifouling coating, and b) an improved and predictable biocide release which protects against fouling. A
recent project for Awlgrip was in partnership with Latitude Yachts, which saw the creation of two unique 53m trimarans, Nautique and Galaxy of Happiness. The superb vessels, which were 30 months in the making, debuted at the Cannes Yacht Festival and saw Galaxy of Happiness win the award for the most futuristic design. The dream-like vessels, which are already renowned for their unusual design in the industry, were created by an expert team of boat builders and painters, requiring many hours of precise work by hand. Together with AGL Marine and Latitude Yachts, Awlgrip provided training, expertise and products to deliver the sleek result, which is continuing to impress audiences around the globe. Currently enjoying successful careers on the water, the trimarans almost appear as though they organically emerged from the water, with the design harmoniously linked with the sea. However, the construction of the vessels wasn’t all plain sailing, and required quick thinking, innovation and a meticulous strategy to achieve the finished product.
An Introduction to Latitude Yachts Latitude Yachts is situated on the outskirts of Riga, Latvia, in an area of industrial dockland

with access to the Baltic Sea via the Gulf of Riga. Ideally placed for large scale builds, it is an established business which, up until this project, was primarily involved in the commercial market, such as interiors for restaurant boats and ferries. The two trimarans, created by renowned French designer, Jean Jacques Costes, marks Latitude Yacht’s first venture into the superyacht market and required temporary warehouses to be constructed so that they could accommodate the size of the impressive trimarans.
Born from the Future, Created by Hand The spacecraft-like trimarans feature a sleek central hull with wings suspended either side. To achieve the futuristic design, the two vessels were constructed from extremely light-weight carbon fibre, a departure from traditional boat building materials, which required a timeintensive modular construction. This saw each section created in a bespoke mould, which was then cured and post-cured at 85°C for sixteen hours. Following this process, all surfaces were extensively filled, faired and sanded, manipulating by hand the hulls, decks and superstructure of the trimarans to achieve seamless curved edges which perfectly

Once the desired shape had been reached, the project team then encountered the unique challenge of applying Awlcraft SE in a silver metallic shade to the trimarans. The combination of the unusual shape of the vessels, and the complicated properties of applying metallic paint required the project team to adapt a unanimous painting technique. Developing this technique was essential as metallic is a challenging paint shade to apply due to the way it reflects light. If different application techniques or equipment are used during the project, the end finish would vary as the viewer moved around the vessel, and would appear imperfect.
Smoke and Mirrors To overcome this challenge, Awlgrip provided panel testing to find out what technique provided the best finish. Once this had been decided, six painters from Latvia were brought to AkzoNobel’s new training centre in Hedge End, Southampton, for an intensive course. The training ensured that all team members involved in the application used the same technique, essential for achieving a smooth and even reflection in the metallic shades. The training took place over two days and followed a course based on new Awlcraft SE paint, looking at the tools available to apply paint and the methods to apply them. The paint team left the training feeling inspired and ready to tackle the project. Once back in Latvia and as the application progressed, the team were required to use more and more innovative methods to tackle the size and shape of the vessels, which included suspending the painters from a cherry picker so they could reach every curve and maintain a consistent application technique. For the application, they used a conventional spray atomisation technique – where the paint is pressurised with an airline gun. The paint is then atomised when expelled, achieving a fine and even result. In total the vessel received, two coats of Hullgard Extra Primer, four coats of Awlfair LW epoxy filler applied in 1-2mm skims and sanded between coats, a skim of Awlfair Surfacing Filler, two coats of High Build Primer and three coats of 545 Epoxy Primer. Finally, three coats of Awlcraft SE Silver Metallic base and three clear coats of Awlcraft 2000 were applied to achieve the end result. The application of the metallic paint was completed within a few crucial hours, as any delay would have caused imperfections to the surface – this would have undoubtedly been the tensest part of the project.

SuperYacht Industry’s Marco Geels
MYS big, bigger, biggest Once again, the Monaco Yacht Show has taken place at the sunny Port Hercules. Our Editor Julia Zaltzman and I were both there to admire the greatest superyachts at the biggest and luxurious show, and to network with current and potential business relations. The Monaco Yacht Show is one of the most important shows in our calendar, and we’re happy to say that SuperYacht Industry has been a media partner of the show for eleven years now. This year, it welcomed almost 590 exhibiting companies and 125 of the world’s most extraordinary one-off superyachts. There were so many highlights during the show, one of which was the official unveiling of Royal Huisman’s new project ‘Marlin’ – a bespoke retro-classic motor yacht with timeless exterior lines designed by Frers Naval Architecture and an interior design by the creative talents of Stirling & Co Interior Design. This yacht is offered for sale by Fraser, and I am eager, as I’m sure many of you are too, to see this dream yacht become a reality. Another project worth mentioning is German yacht builder Nobiskrug’s announced collaboration with Winch Design on a new 85m concept. A striking
dark blue hull and snow-white superstructure set the tone for this edgy, modern design. It goes without saying that there were plenty of cocktail parties and evening events to attend over the course of the four days, and I’m happy to say that I managed to find a fine balance between mixing business with pleasure. Both the Holland Yachting Group Party and the Oculus/ YachtCloud Party were two very well organised events that I attended and felt worth mentioning, and throughout the course of the show I met some promising new companies and gathered a lot of interesting news for the upcoming issues of SuperYacht Industry. The Monaco Yacht Show proved, once again, to be an unmissable opportunity to see what’s in store for the industry in 2018. I hope you, too, had an enjoyable show, and I look forward to seeing you at METS.
