Editor’s note

Complementary Contrasts WITH THIS ISSUE COMING AS WE PREPARE TO CLOSE THE YEAR IT SEEMS AN APPROPRIATE TIME FOR ME TO REFLECT ON SOME OF THE YACHTS WE’VE FEATURED OVER THE PAST 12 months. One of the striking features of the year has been the ingenious ways in which seemingly contrasting characteristics have been brought together to create some really unique yachts. One of these is Holland Jachtbouw’s Rainbow. Built as a replica of the 1934 racing yacht, the new version presented all the pedigree of the original, combined with the sophistication of a first-of-its-kind hybrid propulsion and power system offering silent, battery powered sailing. Royal Huisman’s Kamaxitha similarly combined elegance, incorporating beveled glass and traditional deckboard layout, with modern performance and handling. Then there was the Quatroelle from Lurssen, which successfully and rather spectacularly blended the aesthetic brilliance of Italian styling with the ingenuity of German engineering. The interweaving continues in this issue with Cosmo Explorer’s I-Nova (pg 36). A robust vessel built with a reinforced hull meeting ice class standards, the I-Nova nevertheless possesses an exclusive beauty, imparted by use of exquisite materials such as 50,000 year old preserved kauri timber from New Zealand.

MARCO GEELS | CCO MARCO@YNFPUBLISHERS.COM

This year’s MYS showcased over 100 of the most exciting superyachts around, which I was fortunate enough to be able to witness first hand. One of these, Benetti’s Ocean Paradise, is also featured in this issue (pg 10). Ocean Paradise is a unique yacht, showcasing the signature touch of the vessel’s owner who has personally been involved in the design of each detail, ensuring a coherent flow of style throughout. In fact, the MYS revealed a resurgence of interest in distinctive designs, which bodes well for 2014 and I look forward to sharing in these developments with you next year. It only remains for me to wish you all a very happy holiday season!

Green Tender Venetian Design’s Project BeGreen 18 is an electric-powered 5.4m day boat for quiet exploration of pristine coastlines without exhaust fumes. The project builds on the successful Energy18 launched at last year’s boot Düsseldorf with more sophistication and more innovative technology, making it well-suited for a superyacht environment. The hydraulic roof cover closes in seconds, and now features a hatch to sail with the cover down. As well as opening and closing the roof at the touch of an iPad or iPhone, the console is simply an iPad for simple and safe sailing. A new stern opening provides more comfortable access and the refreshed exterior lines are more elegant and sporty. Since departing Nuvolari-Lenard and setting up Venetian Design in Trieste, yacht designer Armin Koren has created 60m plus concepts as well as successful tenders and day boats. In 2014 the studio is opening a branch office in Amsterdam.

50m Troy to be Delivered 2014

The Bodrum-based superyacht builder Esenyacht is building 50m supersailing yacht Troy. The yacht will be completed late 2014. With exterior styling and interior design by Tim Saunders working in conjunction with Esenyacht’s own design team, Troy will have accommodation for twelve guests and nine crew members. The spaces below decks will feature long flowing lines that reflect her role as a performance sailing yacht designed for competitive regatta racing as well as luxury cruising. Materials used will include marble from Esenyacht’s own quarry in central Anatolia and fine leathers sourced from suppliers, to some of the top Italian luxury brands. This is in keeping with the Esenyacht ethos of uncompromising attention to detail and, as with the marble, the use of its own expertise and resources wherever possible.

NEWS IN BRIEF Wider 42’ Côte d’Azur Edition at FLIBS

At the 54th edition of the Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show, Wider presented the 42’ (12.8m) Côte d’Azur Edition for the first time. The Wider Edition preserves the essential features of the original design, a patented automatic system that allows doubling of the walking surfaces of the cockpit and reaching of an extraordinary stability in just 12 seconds. The 42’, whose lines have been characterised by designer Fulvio De Simoni, is an open yacht with a strong design connotation, to drive and enjoy in an incredible mix of adrenaline and fun, a yacht ready to satisfy a wide range of demands, via solutions offering comfort and stability.

First Yacht in the New Perini Navi 60m Series The Perini Navi Group delivered Seahawk, the first yacht in their new generation of 60m sailing yachts. With innovative hull lines and technological solutions, the yacht guarantees speed and performance under sail along with even more ample and comfortable interior volumes. Seahawk has a sleek hull and superstructure in aluminium with a gross tonnage of under 500 t and a displacement of 570 t. The variable keel length allows for a draught that goes from 4.30 to 12.30 m. The ketch, designed by the naval architects at Perini Navi in collaboration with New Zealander Ron Holland, has a total sail plan area of 2,125 m2 featuring two aluminium masts of 62 and 52 m. The booms and spreaders are in carbon fibre as are the foils, head-stays and diagonals. Also, for the first time on a Perini Navi ketch, carbon fibre has also been used for the standing rigging.

36m Café Racer Rob Doyle Design has unveiled a 36m Sailing Yacht concept aimed at the expanding interest in Bucket Racing. Inspired by the Café Racer motorcycle culture, the yacht offers high performance and low weight, courtesy of a simple interior. The concept boasts the latest hull shape and appendages whilst remaining mindful of the need for all-round ease of use.

The new FC3 100 by Maxi Dolphin Maxi Dolphin’s latest yacht, FC3 100, from the Maxi Dolphin shipyard is 30.48m long and weighs 52t. The yacht is designed by Finot-Conq with decor and furnishing by Pierre Frutschi Architecture & Design. The concept Pierre Frutschi worked with is ‘the world’s fastest 100’ cruiser’. The design of the hull is derived directly from the vast experience the French designers have in offshore and ocean racing boats, with very slight overhangs. A max beam – 8.30m – carrying further aft to the stern, double rudders, herald an intense and fascinating agenda of long cruises and offshore race participations alike.

All Brand New Explorer Vessels Oceanic Yachts is an exciting new line of yachts from Cantieri Navale di Ostia-Canados. A range of fast explorer vessels – spanning 27.4 to 42.67 m – which is the result of a close interaction with customers of the Italian builder, in operation now for 66 years, and a constant monitoring of the global yachting market’s evolution. Oceanic Yachts designed and developed an innovative hull concept named Displanning, offering the best of both displacement and semi-planning configurations, more specific displacement at speeds under 14 knots and semiplanning above that speed. In general, displacement speeds offer low consumption and longer range, while semi-planning offers higher performance. For propulsion the entry-level Oceanic Yachts 90’ (27.4 m) is available in a diesel version with two Caterpillar C32 Acert engines coupled to conventional straight shafts (STS model).

Second Hull Delivered for Princess 40M

Following the launch of the award winning Imperial Princess in 2012, the flagship Princess 40M from the range of M CLASS superyachts, Princess Yachts International announced the delivery of the second hull to St Petersburg, Russia. The delivery comes amid continuing critical acclaim and international award success for the 40M. As Princess’ largest yacht built to date, she was recognised and celebrated at the World Superyacht Awards earlier this year. The second Princess 40M, has been designed in meticulous detail. Her elegant Mark Berryman interior scheme features an Oriental theme incorporating a refined colour palette and tasteful selection of natural textures including bamboo, natural woods, rattan and golden oak. The spacious interior features six generously sized cabins.

NEWS IN BRIEF Alloy Yachts’ MY47 Alloy Yachts introduce the MY47, a 47m motor yacht offering an all inclusive turnkey package. Designed by Dubois Naval Architects and based on the award winning, Loretta Anne (AY43). The MY47 will be available in four models; a tri-deck version with and without a beach club and a fly-bridge version with and without a beach club. The construction time will be streamlined due to experience gained in the production of a similar yacht, and preengineering of many of the design features. The MY47 caters to those customers looking for a high quality personalised build, but without the time and cost that a full custom boat traditionally demands.

Starclass Yacht Transport Service Starclass Yacht introduces their new complimentary delivery service for yachts. If there is no time to take a yacht to or from the carrier, one of their Captains can take it to a selected marina or alongside the carrier within a distance of 32 km.

Panel Discussion Aboard Cakewalk A panel of industry experts gathered on board the spectacular motor yacht Cakewalk during the Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show (FLIBS). The sensational 85.6m Cakewalk, built by Derecktor, is the largest volume superyacht ever constructed in the United States. Burgess, as Central Agents, currently offer her for sale. The yacht represented the perfect platform for a discussion on the state of the market. The panel also faced questions on the importance of FLIBS for the superyacht industry at large, environmental responsibility and the ever-elusive question: ‘where do buyers come from?’

Yacht Carbon Offset Option EYOS Expeditions and Yacht Carbon Offset are working together to offer a greenhouse gas offset option to all its clients. This will enable each participating yacht’s greenhouse gas to be counteracted while preserving cruising freedom, regardless of whether the yacht is sailing through the Northwest Passage or exploring the hidden atolls of the Seychelles. EYOS Expeditions’ CEO Ben Lyons said: “Our work introduces clients to environments that are exposed to the potential impact of climate change, be they coral atolls or polar ice fields. Whether for charter clients or those who own their own yacht, it is natural for us to offer this service for those who would like to partake.”

WORDS BY TOM SCOTT PHOTOS BY JEFF BROWN

Destined to be next season’s nautical protagonist, Ocean Paradise is the latest creation from Benetti’s Livorno yard. In close collaboration with the owner, Benetti handled both interior and exterior design briefs. Their novel use of architectural solutions and the combinations of materials emphasise the traditional relationship with the sea. SYI witnessed her debut at this year’s Monaco Yacht Show.

uilt in aluminium and steel, Ocean Paradise is based on the tried and tested Benetti platform – rich with original content with regard to partitioning, interior design, decor and fitting out. Many of the innovations on board this 55m yacht have been specifically developed by the yard’s technicians and designers based on specific requests by the owner – a dynamic young businessman from Singapore. His close involvement in the design and construction processes is one of the many reasons that make Ocean Paradise such a distinctive project. Benetti Exclusive Sea Technology (BEST) – the yard’s proven in-house system adopted aboard several vessels and very much appreciated by both owners and crew – coordinated and managed the project in its entirety.

Unbroken Views Many elements make this yacht an example of custom avant-garde solutions: from the furnishings to the highly elaborate illumination plan. Throughout the whole project, light plays a primary role. Natural light filters through the plentiful openings in the yacht’s structure and transparent solutions such as the crystal skylight. The use of artificial light is cleverly temperature controlled to match natural light conditions. The Benetti interior design team researched and consequently adapted the height of the opaque architectural elements and utilised diverse materials such as plexiglass and crystal. The result is conclusive – they have guaranteed communication between adjacent environments and particularly with the sea, even while relaxing in the main salon or lunch area. While using these areas, guests will enjoy vast unbroken ocean views due to the absence of bulwarks in the floor to ceiling windows. Minimalist, but never cold, and always connected with the sea – these were the primary guidelines laid down by the owner for the project. Benetti have proved again that they are second to none in interpreting and adapting an owner’s requests.

Skilful Light Solutions Located on the lower deck, the four guest cabins have access to the central hall and the main deck foyer. As Ocean Paradise was conceived to fulfil the specific need of charter activities, the guest cabins are certainly

stylish with a contemporary look and feel. Each cabin has its own spacious bath and a view of the sea is guaranteed by ample portholes. The owner’s full beam suite in the forward portion of the main deck is luxurious and elegant in every aspect – from the expansive bathroom to the private side balcony. Here, like in the rest of the vessel, the lighting design team has created just the right atmosphere by skilfully concealing coloured LED lighting technology in the cladding that is managed by the exclusive BEST System. Special attention has been paid to the passageways used by the owner, guests and crew. They are skilfully separated, yet always ensure rapid service by the personnel to all living and private areas.

Serene Gardens The owner’s interests in interior design can be seen in his influence in the design for the second objective of creating a natural and 1 4 | S Y I  2 0 1 3 | Vo l u m e 8 | Issue 6

relaxing atmosphere. He achieved this by placing delicate Zen gardens on board. The natural greenery of the plants and the use of transparent surfaces that double as display cases add a tranquil serenity. Ocean Paradise displays several notable one of a kind elements; for his yacht the owner commissioned details such as the wardrobe door handles, light switches, light fixtures, automatic hatch and panel latches and chromatic contrasting leather stitching. There are also many ‘hidden’ storage areas perfectly integrated among the various environments. The design motive of every area, even the smallest and least visible, has been customised to ensure coherency with the entire project’s inspiration. This is also true on the above decks where the waterfalls in the oversize swimming pool suggest natural environments. There is also a gym on the sun deck with dominant ocean views and a mini bar with DJ console. w w w. s u p e r ya ch t-i n d u s tr y. co m

YACHT REPORT

Tantalising View There are numerous solutions adopted to exploit the vessel´s space and volume, all designed to guarantee comfort and contact with the sea. One is the aft beach area with adjacent relaxing zone complete with a large platform created by lowering the transom door. To create an open air area, still hidden and independent from the tender and toy launching area, the Benetti designers have developed a system of lateral openings, complete with a mooring platform for jet-skis or the custom made 6.2m tender which is stowed inside the garage while underway. The rescue boat has its own forward garage hidden from the view of the guests and protected from the seas. The jet-skis are mounted on the foredeck in a separate area but still offering a tantalising view from the circuit used by the owner and his guests.

Design Meets Technology

Ocean Paradise displays several notable one-of-a-kind elements.

Ocean Paradise.indd 15

The bridge seems a unique design piece in itself – the walk-around instrument console and separate chart table are completely clad in leather with contrasting stitching and several different illumination settings. Not only beautiful in form, the bridge is fully equipped with Benetti’s ‘Integrated Bridge’ technology,

enabling the crew to quickly and easily monitor all onboard systems. The crew has complete control of the vessel and is immediately informed of any malfunctions. This advanced system also allows monitoring of the air conditioning systems to optimise energy consumption while underway in varying atmospheric conditions. Technically, Ocean Paradise keeps to the classic configuration of a steel displacement hull with two Caterpillar main engines which always guarantee the best performance and efficiency at every speed. Her advanced hull design provides assurance of a 4,000nm cruising range at the economical cruising speed of 12 knots. However, the engines can easily top out at a top speed of 17 knots. The Benetti designer team have interpreted the desires of the owner – bringing them to fruition from both technical and aesthetic viewpoints. When they leave port, guests on board the Ocean Paradise will embark on a voyage of luxury and elegance. On their return, they will feel relaxed and calm and most importantly, connected with the sea.

WORLD CLASS YACHT DESIGN & LEADERSHIP

International Allure at the ISS Awards 2013 EACH YEAR THE INTERNATIONAL SUPERYACHT SOCIETY (ISS) ANNOUNCES THE WINNERS OF THE 2013 DESIGN AND LEADERSHIP AWARDS. THIS YEAR the awards were presented at the 23rd anniversary of ISS’s Awards Gala. ISS’s fundamental mission is to build alliances worldwide with regional associations to recognise achievement as well as provide educational opportunities and networking events. This year’s prestigious award winners include the 72m superyacht Stella Maris, Pumula from Royal Huisman and the Damen-built 67m Fast Yacht Support vessel Garçon. WORDS BY ANOESHKA MAASKANT

Best Sail 24-40m The winner of the 2013 Best Sail 24-40m is Pumula from Royal Huisman. The concept for Pumula was clear. The owners wanted “a classically inspired design that evoked the honest simplicity of a ‘gentleman’s sailing yacht’.” A nod to yachts of the classic era, Pumula’s owners desired a beautiful and luxurious build, with technology that was straightforward and uncomplicated. Their yacht should be large enough to cruise the world – high and low latitudes – in comfort, yet small enough to be easily handled by a small crew and by the owners themselves. In the end, Royal Huisman and Dykstra Naval Architects exceeded their every expectation. Pumula’s interior living is in perfect step with her outdoor appeal. Interior designers Rhoades Young made sure the environment within reflected an earlier era of sailing.

world’s largest sloop in carbon fibre developed on the lines of Tripp Design with the interiors by Wetzels Brown Partners. Luca Bassani Antivari, Wally Founder and President and head of R&D stated, “We succeeded in delivering an environmentally friendly and breakthrough Wally 50m with aggressive and sleek lines of a true performance sailing yacht, rather than the motor sailor look typical of this class of yachts.”

Best Refit A2 from Pendennis/Feadship was awarded Winner of Best Refit, which is her second win after taking the honours in the World Superyacht Awards earlier in 2013. Pendennis’ remodelling of the 1983 Feadship A2 was a milestone for the yard in terms of remodelling projects, and really showcased all elements of their in-house skills and experience from naval architecture through to exterior finishing.

Yachts, and designed by René van der Velden, CaryAli is a modern and stylish explorer yacht, equipped for long-range travel. Her experienced owners were hands on throughout the design and build process and winning this award is a real testament to their vision for the project.

Best Power 40-65m The 60m Excellence V from Abeking & Rasmussen can accommodate fourteen guests and 20 crew members. Excellence V is ‘only’ 60m long, according to the shipyard, but this is no waiver but calculus, on the one she can call at small harbours and on the other hand she has 50 percent more device volume than the known A&R 60m yachts through a considerable beam of 12.8 m and an additional deck says the shipyard. Reymond Langton Design created a modern contemporary interior with all the personal touches the experienced owner requested. The yacht features the latest in yachting and is characterised by modern technology and comfort, such as the enclosed bow area for the owner’s privacy, numerous hull openings for easy access to the sea, a cinema, an elevator and more.

Best Power 65m+ & Best Interior The 72m superyacht Stella Maris from VSY came away with two prestigious prizes, winning both the Best Power 65m+ and Interior Design awards. VSY said the awards were a valuable recognition of the Italian shipyard’s constant commitment, which underlines the fundamental importance of the teamwork. “Results of this nature are achievable only by bringing together the

2013 Excellence in Innovation The Damen-built 67m Fast Yacht Support vessel, Garçon, won the ISS Awards of Distinction for Innovation. According to the ISS: “The Excellence in Innovation award is given to an individual or business that has demonstrated innovation in their endeavours within the previous year.” To reach speeds between 18 and 25 knots in all sea states, Garçon’s innovative ‘Axe Bow’ and underwater body shape make her a fast and dependable support ship. Garçon, whose sale was brokered by owner’s representative Moran Yacht & Ship, has 235m² deck

Sales and marketing of the Damen range of Yacht Support vessels is handled by Amels. Rob Luijendijk, CEO of Amels, had the honour to receive the award, commenting: “The Sea Axe is a patented hull design, but what makes Garçon so special is her combination of high performance, purpose-built configuration for the client, along with great looks and yacht-quality finish.” Damen has responded to growing interest in specialised yacht support vessels, with three already delivered and another four under construction. Mark Vermeulen, Director of Damen’s Yacht Support Division stated: “Following the success of the Sea Axe vessels, we have expanded the range up to 90 m in length, with our Yacht Support vessels based on proven heavy-duty platforms, such as Damen’s Offshore Patrol Vessel and Worldwide Support Vessel. With a ship of these proportions, almost anything is possible. With an inside and outside combined deck space of 800 m2, these vessels give you huge capacity. And like Garçon, they look great too. The perfect complement to a luxury superyacht.”

Excellence V from Abeking & Rasmussen is the winner of the Best Power 40-65m award.

Giancarlo Ragnetti, CEO of the Perini Navi Group, won the ISS Leadership Award. His greatest quality according to Perini Navi is the relationships and trust he developed with the owners of Perini Navi Yachts. Consider the fact that during his tenure Perini has signed 56 contracts and in fact of those 56, there have been nineteen owners who have two Perini yachts and two who came back for three. The well-known and incredible sense of ‘family’ that pervades throughout the world of Perini Navi has to be attributed in a large part to Giancarlo’s leadership.

Azzam

Lürssen Bremen-Vegesack, Germany The’s world’s largest superyacht, the 180m Azzam, was delivered in November. The amazing masterpiece left her dock in April, only 11 months after her transfer last year and only 28 months from cutting steel. This was possible thanks to Mubarak Saad al Ahbabi who is the principal designer and the man who defined the original creative idea based on his in-depth knowledge of the environment. Azzam is not only great in size but also in terms of technology, dimensions and performance, and is still able to reach top speeds of over 30 knots.

Determination Azzam stands for determination in Arabic, which is exactly what was necessary to build this enormous yacht with a beam of 20.80 m. The hull of the world’s largest yacht is built out of steel and has a maximum draught of 4.30 m. Azzam’s main salon measures 29m, and has an open space featuring no support pillars. As well as approximately 50 suites, the yacht reportedly has a bulletproof master suite, a missile defence system, two helipads, an on board movie theatre, two pools and her own miniature submarine. The interior design of the vessel incorporates the Empire Style, from the boards of the renowned French designer Christophe Leoni from CL Decor. The exterior design of the yacht was in the hands of Mario Pedol from Nauta Yachts, while Fr. Lürssen Werft is responsible for the engineering and construction.

Environmentally Friendly Azzam wouldn’t be a Lürssen yacht if it didn’t feature cutting-edge environmentally friendly features. The yard paid special attention to decreased CO2, noise and soot emissions and enhanced fuel efficiency. Azzam is equipped with facilities to utilise waste heat from the engine to operate the yacht’s desalination system for drinking water. The yacht will be configured with two gas turbines and two diesel engines with a rated power output of 17.272 kW (23,500 hp) and the engines of the yacht will enable it to sail at a maximum speed of 30 knots.

Graceful

Blohm+Voss Hamburg, Germany The latest yacht by Blohm+Voss is the 82m Graceful. In May 2012, the yacht’s hull was towed by tugs to Blohm+Voss and docked at the Hamburg-based shipyard to be completed and fitted out. Over the last 2 years the yacht, designed by H2 Yacht Design, has been fitted out both inside and out by Blohm+Voss in close cooperation with both the owner and Dörries Maritime Services. One of the many reasons why the owner decided to have the yacht completed by Blohm+Voss was the unique and complex equipment and characteristic design. Graceful’s striking design features a 15 by 3m indoor pool, which can be converted to a dance floor by raising the pool floor. In addition to a separate owner’s area with a duplex suite and direct access to the sea via a folding balcony, the yacht has two VIP and three guest suites for a further ten guests.

DEUTSCHE YACHTEN BUILDS GREAT SUPERYACHTS

German TEAMWORK COOPERATION IS NO MERE LIP SERVICE FOR THE DEUTSCHE YACHTEN – IT’S A FOUNDING PRINCIPLE. AFTER RETURNING from FLIBS in Fort Lauderdale, the Managing Director of the association’s umbrella group, Claus-Ehlert Meyer was keen to extol the international exploits of the Deutsche Yachten. At the recent METS show in Amsterdam, Mr Meyer enthused over the group’s results and performances and gave SYI’s Tom Scott an inside perspective. Read on to discover more about seven of the stand-out companies of the Deutsche Yachten group. WORDS BY TOM SCOTT

Deutsche Yachten – Superyacht Germany is a working group of more than 60 companies involved in the German superyacht industry. The group operates within the German Boat and Shipbuilders Association (DBSV) which has represented Germany’s maritime industry for 55 years. Established 13 years ago the Deutsche Yachten group consists of yacht builders and the numerous associated suppliers and service providers. “German yacht-building was forced to organise so that the massive potential available at businesses and one-man companies alike may be internationally communicated in this rather difficult and quite special market,” explains DBSV President Torsten Conradi. “The many groups that were founded in other countries after our group was established demonstrate that this was the right route to take.”

Made in Germany All member companies have extensive experience in the superyacht sector – their products bear the ‘Made in Germany’ label that stands for top technical performances, functionality and clear design. The strict acceptance rules of the association also ensure the quality of the delivered product. Mr Conradi continues, “‘Made in Germany’ stands for something that isn’t available just anywhere.” In a highly specialised world, the association’s joint expertise carries considerable weight. Customers can be certain that they are dealing with competent and experienced professionals.

Efficient Network The strengths of the Deutsche Yachten association stem from its members’ professionalism and teamwork. The transfer of know-how, the development of ideas and the creation of networks is a natural progression

Glass for Design & Security

Glass is an important design feature on modern superyachts. Its transparency provides a room with more openness and a feeling of space. One of the world’s leading specialists in glazing products for the yacht industry is Tilse, a company with almost 40 years of experience in the design and worldwide installation of top notch glass products. At the core of Tilse’s product range is their Formglas Spezial – a compound security glass made of two or more chemically tempered panes bonded with a special cast resin. The high-grade UV and seawater-proof resin ensures excellent optical quality and lasting protection. It is characterised by full UV absorption without yellowing or ageing along with moisture resistance and continuous heat resistance from -40 to +100°C without loss of adhesion. Glass is not only important in the design – it also offers security. Formglas Spezial can be used in simple compound safety glass and special bullet-proof glass. Constantly innovating, Tilse have developed a compound system of safety glazing for hull windows and portlights – the Formglas Spezial CS. This consists of two independent safety glazing panes which are held together by a specially reinforced and shock resistant spacer. The compound system has been engineered and built to withstand extreme pressure and impact forces. Microclear is a heated glass system – a heating foil between the layers of Formglas Spezial is the solution for all glazing which must not ice or steam up. For superyacht owners who wish for privacy on demand – Solardim is the right choice. This is a transparent glass with an incorporated fluid crystal foil. The glass can be controlled electrically from clear to opaque.

Carbon Fibre Yacht Components

Founded in 1986 by Jan Reiners, multiplex specialises in manufacturing lightweight constructions from composite materials for the maritime industry. Shipbuilding has a long history in his family – back in 1863 his ancestors ran a small shipyard north of Bremen. Reiners’ passion for boats combined with his knowledge of carbon fibre as a raw material was the start of something extraordinary – he is a pioneer of carbon fibre boarding systems. As such, the company has held a strong presence in the market for more than 25 years. The benefits of using carbon fibre in the superyacht industry lie in its strength and ultra-lightweight properties. Moreover it is a durable and non-corrosive construction material that comes from environmentally friendly sources. Located next to the Lürssen and Abeking & Rasmussen yards in Bremen, multiplex has developed into a market leader. Today, multiplex products are based on a production method that specialises in vacuum injection technology. Not only suitable for the fabrication of boarding systems – custom productions such as gangways, sun awnings and multiguards and other structural parts are also part of the portfolio of services. All products are developed and engineered in-house. “All that we have produced, gets copied by competitors within a very short time,” Mr Reiners says. “There is no time to slow down, if you want to be the torch bearer in the future.”

GERMANY from this teamwork. It is these strengths that enable the German superyacht industry to build some of the best yachts in the world. This business network, located in a country famed for its efficiency, portrays a potent combination of technical, engineering and design skills. “Business particularly benefits from the extraordinarily good and well-organised infrastructure and the quality of executives here,” concludes Mr Conradi.

Meeting Deutsche Yachten The Deutsche Yachten group and their members can be found at all the significant superyacht related trade fairs – Düsseldorf,

Monaco, Dubai, Fort Lauderdale and Hamburg. During the recent METS trade show in Amsterdam the reality of the Deutsche Yachten philosophy of teamwork was on full display in the German Pavilion. Mr Meyer highlighted a positively vibrant group of companies that knew each other’s fortés just as well as their own. To become a member of the group, a company must show willingness to cooperate with one another – this was clearly to be seen. The sum of the whole Deutsche Yachten group is undoubtedly greater than its individual parts put together.

Complete Propulsion Systems

A family firm with three generations of experience, Piening Propeller was founded in 1929 and since then has designed, produced or reconditioned thousands of propellers and shaft systems. Today, the company provide in-house computeraided design, foundry and turning shop to offer engineering for complete propulsion systems with fixed or variable pitch propellers that are being increasingly demanded by the superyacht building industry of today. Owners and guests onboard a superyacht equipped with a Piening propulsion system will enjoy a smooth voyage thanks to hydrodynamic optimisation of propellers and shaft lines. This produces highly efficient propellers that enable silent and smooth sailing with low vibration levels. The propulsion expertise expanded in 2009 when Piening Propeller began providing powerful and silent transmissions by supplying ZF transmission products. The foundry at the heart of the factory casts propellers mainly from marine bronze or nickel aluminium bronze alloys – materials with high tensile strength. The affiliated turning shop is able to work with shafts up to 16 m in length. Today Piening propellers and stern gears propel a variety of boats ranging from yachts, sport and high-speed boats, inland vessels, fishing boats and motor coasters to passenger and research vessels. Le Grand Bleu, at 112m long is one of the largest private yachts in the world. Having recently undergone an extensive refit, her propeller and shaft is also from Piening stock. Another notable project for which the company has provided propeller and shaft technology is the Lürssenbuilt 78m Madsummer.

There’s No Light Like Yachtlite

Yachtlite has been providing perfect LED illuminated letterings and logos for the most beautiful yachts in the world since 2002. As the name of each yacht is unique, every Yachtlite design is also an individual creation made from the highest quality materials. The effect is guaranteed – especially at night when the elements radiate in every kind of shape and colour. However, the product range of the creative Hannover team includes much more than simply yacht names. Yachtlite products highlight key exterior and interior accents everywhere on board. FormLite enriches contours and stairways, RoomLite creates complete illuminated surfaces and FloorLite inlays accent teak decks and floorings. The increasing desire for high quality and unprecedented projects requires constant material, processing and supply controls. Specialised laboratories perform mock-ups to ensure perfect usability and customer satisfaction. To be a pioneer in the implementation of new visions and areas of application has always been a challenge and a goal for Yachtlite. An example of this pioneering attitude? In 2013 the company introduced the HeliLite, a fully certified, high resonance lighting system for helidecks. Members of the ‘Deutsche Yachten’ association often share developments and innovations. For example, Yachtlite has realised illuminated carbon fibre structures with multiplex and interior and exterior light design with Schnaase Interior Design.

Elegant Form & Function

Already a qualified boat builder, Axel Hoppenhaus went on to study shipbuilding before finally moving into the industrial design sector. By founding Nomen – a Hamburg-based company that manufactures cleats and fairleads for yachts, tenders and boat-clubs he realised his goal to create distinctiveness with high quality products by means of outstanding functionality and aesthetics. The first Nomen product was the folding cleat which today is still much in demand in the superyacht market – power and sail – as well as in the premium production boat sector. Following the proven design of the Nomen cleat the company launched the Nomen fairlead which is available in various individual shapes. The company’s latest product is the Clip cleat, the winner of the 2013 DAME Award in the category of deck equipment, sails and rigging. The Clip cleat is a mooring cleat that always remains closed, no matter whether it is belayed or not. During belaying the soft moving ends readily give way – the line can be turned around the rigid part of the cleat. The ends stay free from any load and are held in position by a spring mechanism – this presents a smooth profile avoiding snags and injuries when closed. As such, unimpeded casting off is possible at all times. With this latest innovation, Nomen has created a very clever and elegant alternative to standard cleats.

ADD TO POSITIVE VIBE

Breaking Records at METS 2013 THIS YEAR’S METS HAD MORE COUNTRY PAVILIONS THAN EVER AND THE SUPERYACHT PAVILION WAS BRIMMING WITH BRILLIANT innovations and solutions. Among those who had the privilege to go home with the prestigious DAME Design Awards 2013, Sleipner had a standout show as overall winner. SYI’s Anoeshka Maaskant took a closer look at their patented Vector Fin stabiliser and reviews some of her picks of the show. WORDS BY ANOESHKA MAASKANT

The 3-day B2B METS exhibition in November at the Amsterdam RAI Convention Centre had a record attendance of precisely 20,500 professionals. The show sets the tone for the year ahead for the leading maritime equipment suppliers. METS Domain Manager Irene Dros noticed the positive vibe at the trade fair, “a rise in attendance of over 5 percent compared to 2012 is very good news for everyone connected to METS and the global maritime supply industry. We also had a couple more exhibitors than last year and more country pavilions than ever. The various conferences and meetings also attracted huge numbers. We are very proud it has been a record-breaking event and grateful to our exhibitors and visitors for reinforcing the reputation of METS as an unmissable exhibition.”

Skysol Motion

Oceanair won its DAME category with Skysol Motion, a stylish pleated blind offering the practicality and convenience associated with traditional roller blinds, combined with the elegant look and feel of a pleated blind. A specially designed self-retracting recoil system developed and manufactured in-house by Oceanair is the key innovative feature of the blind. Oceanair’s Managing Director Andy Fitzgerald: “We are thrilled to accept this award. At Oceanair we pride ourselves on our ability to deliver innovatively designed custom solutions. Constantly looking to push the boundaries of blind design and manufacture, it’s fantastic to be recognised for this quality within the wider marine industry.”

Roll Damping

DMS Holland made their debut appearance at METS showcasing a unique roll damping system, named AntiRoll, especially designed for the superyacht market. Thanks to its unique, dual-axis fin stabiliser, which rotates whilst sailing and flaps at anchor, AntiRoll provides stabilisation both underway and at zero speed without any compromise of performance in either circumstance. The curved, high-aspect ratio fin significantly reduces the drag by between 50 and 75 percent whilst sailing, which in turn has a positive impact on fuel consumption. In addition, with the fin flapping at zero speed as opposed to rotating, a greater lifting force is generated providing a more stable platform.

5 Carbon Steering Wheel

Polymer’s carbon steering wheels are made with monocoque technology further improved by Polymer’s No Bonding Technology. The mechanical properties of carbon fibres are ten times stronger in comparison to metals. They have the same stiffness and lower weight. This results in lower rotational inertia and improved feedback from steering system and consequently, in lower energy consumption of autopilots. The technology advantage allows incredible modern, minimalistic designs – four spoke with very thin connection (B style). The cleverly incorporated inox/aluminium hub is always customised to the customer’s steering system with an option of positioning logo on hub via laser engraving.

EVENTS Norway-based Sleipner Motor’s patented Vector Fin stabiliser design was selected from 115 original entries as the outright winner of this year’s prestigious DAME award for innovation. The Vector Fin stabiliser handles well both cruising and at anchor use, with the at anchor stabilisation force deciding the size of the fins. Vector Fins simply re-direct the force direction/ force vectors to a direction where more of the force will benefit roll reduction and less will be spent on the negative side-effects of yaw and sway which affect the boats handling and comfort. According to the DAME jury, “Sleipner Motor has thought out of the box to produce a fin that better suits many of the modern hull forms to which stabilisers are becoming a standard fit. The elegant curved shape of the fin beneficially directs force to improve roll reduction and decrease the side effects of yaw and sway. It also increases the leverage arm around the vessel’s rolling point and minimises drag. This is an incredibly simple solution to improving the experience of boatowners and their guests.” The Jury also noted the slimline form of the Vector Fin’s SPS55 actuator, a welcome design feature that will assist designers and boatbuilders.

efficiency for modern boat design and technologies. “This award means a lot to us. Product development is the very core of Sleipner,” said the inventor of the product, Ronny Skauen, accepting the Award on behalf of Sleipner Motor AS. “With the new and more efficient design of the Vector Fin, we believe this is not only an important product for us, but for the boating industry as an whole, ultimately allowing more people to become boaters, who otherwise might have chosen not to. It seems that the jury have thought exactly the same!” On top of the DAME Award, the Managing Director of Sleipner Motor AS, Arne Kai Skauen received the Norwegian Marine Federation Norboat’s prestigous award ‘Vandrepropellen’ at METS. Sleipner’s Benelux distributor is ASA Boot Electro B.V. Next year’s METS will be held 18-20 November 2014 at the Amsterdam RAI Convention Centre.

COSMO EXPLORER’S I-NOVA IS READY FOR ADVENTURE

Go Anywhere Do Anything I-Nova is an explorer yacht with a strong identity thanks to the spatial and functional solutions created by the Cristiano Gatto design team. Her interior is luxurious yet multifunctional, simple yet elegant. Her tiered profile presents clearly defined features but no single element stands out in sharp relief. Despite her five decks, she has a low centre of gravity thanks to a wise distribution of weights. Built by Greece-based Cosmo Explorer, her fine entry into the water is smooth and graceful, notwithstanding her robust 50m ice-class steel hull. WORDS BY TOM SCOTT PHOTOS BY A&B PHOTODESIGN

n stepping aboard I-Nova, one is immediately struck by the overall feeling of space, comfort and quality. Great attention has been dedicated to the interior decoration in order to provide the owner and his guests with a relaxing yet sophisticated environment. Most of the furniture was designed by Cristiano Gatto who, despite using a large selection of different materials was able to compose a cohesive and refreshing interior. Precious veneers such as weathered and limed teak, kauri and wengè were used for the flooring and furniture. Bamboo and rope can be seen in graphic ceiling designs. Striking photographs on the walls evoke stories of adventurous journeys to far-off lands and distant climes whilst well-designed floor lamps add further drama to the mood.

The functional layout offers extensive privacy to the owner, whose private quarters consist of a large cabin on the main deck and a panoramic salon right above on the upper deck accessed through a dedicated staircase. The full beam owner’s cabin is a soberly decorated affair that opens into a large bathroom and adjoining dressing rooms. Wallace chair. The owner can use his private staircase to reach the salon on the upper deck with its panoramic hideaway and great views towards the bow.

Spatial Planning Cristiano Gatto and his team have also made sure that guests do not want for luxury during their stay on board the I-Nova. A bright and comfortable VIP cabin with ensuite bathroom is located on the upper deck. Decorated with plenty of teak and luxury fabrics, four comfortable guest cabins, two doubles and two twins, are grouped nearly amidships on the lower deck. These cabins are separated from the nearby engine room by a thick, soundproof bulkhead. Efficient spatial planning is a feature throughout the yacht and the lower deck’s layout illustrates this without doubt. Aft of the engine room is a multifunctional area that serves as a large indoor beach club. This teak clad room provides a cosy lounging area where guests can relax after an invigorating swim or a healthy sweat in the adjoining sauna. Guests keen on diving can find all the scuba diving equipment here. The lower deck also houses the crew quarters and a connecting staircase to the tank deck where spacious cold and dry rooms hold all the provisions required for a yacht destined to sail to remote and secluded areas in all the seven seas.

Far from Flashy The main deck’s cockpit provides a comfortable lounging and dining area in direct contact with the main saloon. A spectacular Riva 1920 dining table that can accommodate up to twelve people and the bar counter are both made from the same precious wood sort – swamp kauri. Up to 50,000 years old, this ancient wood sort is exclusively sourced from New Zealand company, ‘The Wood Mine’. A comfortable lounging area boasts lush custom-made couches clad in light beige Loro Piana fabrics and two natural leather Baxter sofas. www. s u p e r y a c h t - i n d ustr y.c om

Cosmo Explorer – A Quick Introduction

The main saloon has a wide open-plan layout and similar to the rest of the vessel, the colour scheme is discreet and never flashy. The quality of craftsmanship continues to astound as weathered teak floors, limed teak bulkheads and dark brown wengè furniture compose a modern, muffled atmosphere with an ethnic flavour. Worth a mention are the handwrought copper panels decorating the athwart ship bulkhead in the dining area echoing the surface of an ancient Japanese shield.

Traditional Techniques Social areas include a cosy upper salon with symmetric sofas and

coffee tables – this area doubles up as a television room. The large screen is hidden from view behind sliding white panels in the forward bulkhead. Cristiano Gatto used an ancient Venetian technique using alabaster plaster, glue and pigment to give these panels a course and uneven surface. Such one-off design elements are not unique on the I-Nova – the designer used his longstanding experience as an artist as well as a yacht designer to select contemporary artworks and decorative items from a small number of skilled artists and suppliers.

Cosmo Explorer is a new brand dedicated to the design, construction and production of comfortable and reliable explorer yachts packed with innovations and cutting edge technology, designed for more efficient and effortless long range navigation in all cruising conditions. Cristiano Gatto’s design team was involved from the conception of this ambitious project. They developed the first Cosmo 50 Explorer concept – resulting in the launch of the 50m I-Nova. The Alizul Finance Corporation-owned shipyard is currently developing two further concepts of 40+ and 60+ m explorer yachts in collaboration with the same design team. The brand is the result of a vision conceived by an entrepreneur with a longstanding experience as a yacht owner. He established a fruitful cooperation with important institutes and companies such as the Maritime Research Institute Netherlands, Vripack Naval Architects and Van Oossanen Naval Architects. To set the benchmark of Western European yacht building, high-end equipment suppliers and subcontractors were also selected. Greece was selected to be the venue for the new shipyard due to the existence of extensive experience in the management and operation of yachts, as well as valuable ship building, refit and maintenance know-how.

I-Nova’s list of priorities and her deck spaces, teak clad throughout, are tailored to meet such needs. The details have been meticulously designed and, at night, a cleverly designed lighting system highlights them to their full potential. Teak is also found on the Cramm-supplied gangway and stern platform. I-Nova’s full array of water toys and two tenders can be found in the elongated aft area on the upper deck. is the observation deck where a partially shaded area hosts a gym facing a large sunbathing area crowned by a round Jacuzzi.

Aesthetic & Functional Harmony It is worth putting I-Nova into context to understand and appreciate her fully. She is an ocean-going high class luxury explorer motor yacht with a full displacement welded steel hull and aluminium superstructure. The

hull has been reinforced with extra thick steel plates in the bow section and propeller shafts, propellers, rudders and steering gear systems were designed to meet Ice Class notation requirements. Her 15.6 knot top speed stems from her twin MTU diesel engines coupled via a reduction gearbox to fixed pitch propellers. At a cruising speed of 12 knots, she has a range of 5,500 nm. Pivotal to Cristiano Gatto’s vision of the design was the harmonious balance between aesthetics and functionality. With her outstandingly simplicity and elegant yet powerful lines, I-Nova exemplifies these concepts. The owner of the I-Nova can truly go anywhere and do anything.

generate a holographic beam connecting with the satellite. Kymeta’s innovative antennas electronically and dynamically steer the antenna beam towards the satellite with no moving parts. The Kymeta flat panel technology, which uses no moving parts and can be designed to be conformal with the vessel, works on the new High Throughput Satellite (HTS) systems that are currently being deployed, and will provide high-speed Internet connectivity as well as HDTV reception to yachts while cruising or in port, enabling video streaming, video calling and other key activities that passengers and crew on yachts require. This high-speed connectivity also opens up a new range of possibilities for telematics and cloud-based services for the yachts. “Yachting is a very interesting market and a natural extension of the mobile technologies already in development at Kymeta,” said Vern Fotheringham, Chairman and CEO of Kymeta. “Collaboration with e3 Systems is key in our efforts to develop a solution that surpasses expectations in the yachting industry today.”

Flexible & Feature Rich e3 Systems introduced their enhanced portfolio of superyacht VSAT services from Astrium Services, shortly to be renamed Airbus Services, at the MYS. This is based on Astrium’s established Pharostar VSAT solution. e3 Systems has chosen to become an Astrium Services specialist Partner for the superyacht market for Ku-band services – the catalyst for the launch of this unique set of new services and packages. Already established as a leading service in the shipping, offshore, and superyacht segments, Pharostar offers high performance and availability, backed up by Astrium’s own global

infrastructure and support. e3 Systems will combine Pharostar with its highly regarded existing portfolio including, Fleet Broadband, 3G/4G, remote monitoring, data management and content services, to create this new offering for the superyacht segment. Using a combination of Astrium Services technology and the added value provided by e3 Systems, the VSAT services, as standard, are uniquely managed and monitored at the hub, on board and remotely. This approach ensures the services deliver the reliability, consistency and flexibility that superyacht owners and operators need in order to handle the continuous growth in data demand. “Our appointment by Astrium Services as a Specialist Partner for the superyacht market has been a huge feather in our cap and recognition of our experience,” Mr Horner commented. “Astrium Services is the world’s largest maritime satellite provider and together we can offer an unbeatable portfolio of attractive services ranging from short term and flexible to very high, dedicated bandwidth. We launched some incredibly competitive services at Monaco that will cause a phase-shift in the current status quo of suppliers for large yacht VSAT services.”

‘The Consortium’ e3 Systems has a presence in Spain, France, Italy, Malta and the US. In addition, the firm has joined forces with Aage Hempel Netherlands and Tijssen Elektro to offer a new build service for superyachts that lasts for the full lifecycle of a vessel. It starts at the yacht’s concept, progresses through construction and continues until the yacht stops. Named ‘The Consortium’, the partners www. s u p e r y a c h t - i n d ustr y.c om

AWLGRIP STAYS TOP OF THE GAME

Forty Years of Putting the Finish First 2013 HAS BEEN A SIGNIFICANT YEAR FOR AWLGRIP. WHILE CELEBRATING ITS 40TH YEAR IN THE YACHT TOPSIDES COATINGS business, the company has maintained its excellent reputation for innovative products, stringent quality controls and the superlative finish of its products. SYI takes a look at two of the company’s recent projects – the Asian-built Star and the renowned CRN flagship, Chopi Chopi.

One example of Awlgrip’s drive towards innovation can be seen in its relationship with Kingship Marine, a relatively young Hong Kong-based yacht builder. Kingship is the first builder in Asia to specialise in constructing yachts with steel hulls and aluminium superstructures. In order to build yachts to Northern European standards, the company works with the world’s top designers and architects and all its yachts are designed and were built in compliance to MCA and Lloyd’s qualifications.

considered so as not to break the harmony on board. Harder ceiling and counter tops are combined with Alcantara walls and soft furnished cabinet doors, so the object you see gives a different energy than the ones you touch. Star’s whole layout is uniquely smart and lean. The main deck features the main salon and a connecting functional galley. Further forward, the cosy master suite is separated from the public area by a private office.

Together from the Start

Star is not just about what can be seen in the interiors though, her hull lines have been designed to maximise fuel efficiency, seaworthiness and ocean comfort. Moreover, the high flared bow and full curved round bilge ensure that guests and crew enjoy a safe journey and are at ease even when the weather is less favourable. The vessel’s performance was highlighted by Vripack’s comments after the sea trials: “The sea trials were the best we had ever conducted and witnessed. Not one alarm was raised and all tests were successfully achieved at one attempt. Star is the best yacht we have seen coming out of Asia so far!”

Awlgrip has been working closely with Kingship since they were established in 2004. Since then, Kingship have delivered five hulls, ranging from 27 to 42 m – all of which have been coated using the full Awlgrip system. The latest completed project from Kingship is the 42m Star. Designed by Vripack International, this latest delivery has drawn numerous positive remarks by international brokers and guests reflecting the many years of research and experience in yacht construction at Kingship. Star’s Awlgrip-coated dark blue hull and off-white superstructure resembles the shape of a traditionally styled luxury yacht. In contrast to the classic exterior lines of the sixties is a minimalistic late nineties interior – a style that truly appeals to all of the senses.

Star – Smart & Lean Star radiates a fresh and serene atmosphere. The base of the inside area is off-white in colour while the material choices and soft furnishing colour schemes were carefully built up to match the neutral and natural background. Material selection has been carefully

Award Winners Kingship’s newest project, a 44m superyacht, is now in build and continues the partnership by using the complete Awlgrip system. This sixth build will also be the first project in China to utilise the Yacht Interior Coatings system from International Paint, the sister company to Awlgrip. The shipyard, located in the centre of the Pearl River Delta district, is composed of 24 hectares of ultra

modern facilities dedicated to the construction of superyachts up to 50 m. Their attention to detail allied with their ultra modern facilities led to Kingship recently winning the Best Asian Yacht Builder award (30m+) at the Asian Boating Awards 2013. This is the fourth award won by the company since its establishment in 2004.

CRN Record Breaker Around 9,000 km away from Kingship’s Chinese yard is CRN’s Ancona yard – another location for an important and beautiful Awlgrip relationship. Earlier this year CRN launched Chopi Chopi, its largest pleasure vessel so far. Glistening as she sharked through the water thanks to the full Awlgrip system on the superstructure and topsides, the 80m superyacht wowed those that attended the grand celebration including institutional representatives, VIPs and the shipyard’s employees.

Fruitful Cooperation Completed in CRN’s 50th anniversary year, Chopi Chopi is a steel and aluminium displacement hull yacht with a lower deck for the crew, engine room, and garage, a main deck for guests, an upper deck containing a living area and bar, the owner deck, sun deck and a sub lower deck which is essentially a technical area containing systems and equipment. The new flagship is the outcome of a perfect blend of complementary skills and the fruitful cooperation between the CRN Engineering team and Studio Zuccon International Project, who developed the yacht’s exterior lines and interior layout. Princess Too Receives Awlgrip Treatment Icon Yachts is undertaking an extensive refit of the 48m Princess Too. The Netherlands-based superyacht yard will carry out a full Awlgrip repaint in a new colour scheme and integration of a new black water double bottom storage tank. Further major works include the repair and re-caulking of the teak deck with a light grey colour complementing the new exterior colour scheme. The yard will improve and update the yacht’s aesthetical appeal – originally built in 1999 – as well as upgrading and servicing all technical systems, such as stabilisers, gearboxes and secondary systems. Icon has scheduled 5 months for the refit of the Royal Van Lent-built superyacht; the well defined scope and planning being one of the reasons that the owner chose this particular yard. Head of Project Development at Icon Yachts, Stephan Vitus explains: “It is the package we offer; from the first inspection on board to the detailed scope we specify, right up to the enthusiastic team and strict quality control at the yard – that’s what differentiates us and convinces clients to drive their yachts from the Med to Holland, for a Dutch quality refit.”

Spotless Finish with Freshwater DOMETIC MARINE’S SPOT ZERO DOCK BOX

Dometic Marine developed the Dometic Spot Zero Dock Box, which is the first transportable freshwater reverse-osmosis marine system that can be stored and used dockside. The Dock Box uses water from the available dock hose for spot-free cleaning of boat exteriors so there is no need to go back and chamois-dry the vessel’s surfaces. It can also be used to fill a yacht’s freshwater tanks

for spot-free dishes and glassware. Looking more like a mobile filtration unit than a bench-sized storage container, the Dometic Spot Zero Dock Box can be stored and used dockside or lifted on to a yacht. Alternatively, the components can be installed on the bulkhead of the yacht, without the box.

Hull Roughness Value

TQC’S HULL ROUGHNESS ANALYSER

TQC developed special equipment to test the hydrodynamic performance of marine coatings. In collaboration with a few other large marine coating suppliers TQC created the DC9000, a so called ‘hull roughness analyser’. The roughness of a hull plays an important role in the operating costs of a vessel. This roughness will increase in time namely due to corrosion, mechanical damage, dry spray and above all biofouling. Proper maintenance and correct application

Editors Picks.indd 54

of high-end anti-fouling coatings leads to significant performance improvements and reduced CO2 emissions. The TQC Hull roughness analyser consists of a Control unit and a Sensor unit and measures the AHR value (Average Hull Roughness). AHR is the ‘mean’ of all the vessel’s hull roughness readings and is the measure against which performance is correlated.

Three-Stage Decorative Interior Clear Coating AWLGRIP’S CLEAR-GRIP

AkzoNobel’s Awlgrip launched a new three-stage decorative interior clear coating system for the build and refit sector, named Clear-Grip. The system consists of a Foundation Coating, Build Coating, and Finish Coating. The Clear-Grip system is designed to not only be simple to use, but allow flexibility with a supreme finish that adds value and is ultra-reliable. The new Clear-Grip ranges incorporate Flex-Link polymer technology, which

works by adhering and embedding into the wood to provide a strong yet flexible link with the wood structure and the coating whilst allowing the natural coating and grain to shine through. It also protects against other substrates including water. This, in turn, minimises shrink-back, and stops oils and resins leaching out of the wood.

REFIT & REPAIR

Winter Revival

Seasonal Refurbishment gets Underway

Repair & Refit

Winter is upon us here in the Northern Hemisphere, bringing with it the traditional season of yacht repair and refit activity. We’ll be covering more subject matter from this area in the next edition; so if you have a story to share please do send it in. However, reports are already beginning to emerge of the many projects getting underway and even those that are already completed so, in the interests of providing a seasonal flavour, we look at a few noteworthy examples here. WORDS BY BEN LITTLER

Additionally, the Atlantic Port of La Rochelle, France, which has become increasingly involved in the area of yacht refits and repairs over the past five years, is looking to the future. The port is implementing a project partnership aimed at the development of existing infrastructure and more interaction with the superyacht sector going forwards.

Fast Work for Zero Speed Monaco Marine La Ciotat is in prime position for a good repair and refit season having already delivered three projects since September and with a further sixteen currently underway. Endeavours currently being undertaken include such things as complete paint jobs, stabilisation upgrades, regulatory inspections, mechanical works and interior refits. Noteworthy amongst the three projects completed to September, is the work carried out on superyacht Zita (above). Zita, a Benetti Vision 45 vessel, provides luxury yacht charter in the Mediterranean and Caribbean. She went to Monaco to receive a stabilisation upgrade. This involved switching from the conventional Naiad 420 to Naiad 521 zero speed for extra stability at rest. What made the project notable was the short timeframe available for the work to be undertaken. Zita needed to be in and out of the yard fast, with the refit taking place between bookings. Captain Stanley Benngård, said of the work, “… Monaco Marine rose to this challenge successfully. They were quick to respond, professional throughout the project and within the set budget.”

i. www.monacomarine.com

Keyla’s Hot Look Trinity Yacht’s Keyla (above left) has recently emerged from a complete overhaul designed by Italy’s Hot Lab Yachts and Design and carried out along with Turkey’s RMK Marine. It was a transformation driven by the requirements of Keyla’s new owner and witnessed a substantial revamp in terms of both style and technology. The project took over a year and a half to realise and saw changes throughout the vessel. Work included a 2m hull extension, creating additional space for the swimming platform, implemented without adverse effect to Keyla’s original lines. The crew and service area was restructured to provide additional cabin space and the guest quarters, on the lower deck, were modified to include full en-suite and walk-in wardrobe facilities. The upper deck was restyled into a children’s play area; carefully thought out from a safety perspective, whilst the sun deck received modernisation with teak flooring and LED lighting. Technical alterations included a full hydraulic replacement and new generators suited to both US and European standards. The refit has certainly been enough to ensure Keyla turns heads and has scooped a coveted SBID International Award in the category Contract Transport at the recent awards ceremony at the Dorchester hotel, London on 29 November.

REFIT & REPAIR

Iconic Overhaul Lürssen have seen an increase in refit and repair activity at their facilities recently, with eight projects covered over the past 12 months. One of the largest of these has been the complete overhauling of Ronin, an iconic Lürssen superyacht dating from 1993, featuring a radical exterior designed by Sir Norman Foster. The 58.5m Ronin is a high performance vessel capable of reaching speeds up to 34 knots. The refurbishment was completed in August this year, after a period of 11 months and involved the addressing of everything from technical aspects to repainting. Amongst the scope of work was the removal and replacement of teak decking and installation of cork underlay for noise reduction, installation of a new state-of-the-art AV telephone and camera system, ABS survey, new awning system, hull repaint, underwater paint and paint repair.

Your Atlantic Refit Yard Port Atlantic La Rochelle has been offering repair and refit services to yachts increasingly over the past 5 years at its Shipping and Repair Centre (PRCN) and is now seeking to expand on this by industrialising its service scope. To that end, in a project being touted as “Your Atlantic Yachting Shipyard”, the port has issued a call for proposals aimed at attracting what it calls a ‘major player’ to oversee the process and promote the port’s service offering. Amongst the project’s priorities is an increase in local business and employment opportunities, driven by increased yacht repair activity and the development of port infrastructure. Existing facilities on site include a 300t boat lift, a telescopic crane and fork lift trucks. The project will be operated across various sites at the port, including dry and wet docks, dry and wet repair areas and several buildings, which can serve as workshops, offices and storage points.
