There is nothing so American as our national parks. The fundamental idea behind the parks...is that the country belongs to the people, that it is in process of making for the enrichment of the lives of all of us.

CHAPTER 01 | BR AND OVERVIEW

Learning about the past better prepares us when navigating the future. The National Park Service has a rich history and to rebrand it requires a deep understanding of what they do and why they do it. Being knowledgable of that helps us make thoughtful design decisions.

BR AND INTRODUCTION

N AT ION A L PA R K S E R V I C E

BR AND INTRODUCTION As a federal agency in the Department of the Interior, the National Park Service protects U.S. national parks with the help of volunteers and partnerships. Other aspects the brand protects are monuments, battlefields, military parks, historical parks/sites, lake shores, seashores, recreational areas, scenic rivers, trails and the White House. They do it for communities across all generations from families big and small. The purpose is to revitalize communities, preserve local history, celebrate heritage, and create opportunities for everyone to experience the great outdoors while being active.

The National Park Service as we know it today includes over 400 sites throughout the United States along with 5 sites in territories such as the Caribbean Sea and Central Pacific Ocean. There is an additional focus on creating fun and meaningful opportunities for people of all ages to get outside and be active. Through preserving the past and sharing it with the present, the National Park Service is creating a better future for everyone.

DID YOU KNOW? The highest point in the system is Denali (or Mount McKinley) at 20,320 feet! The lowest accessible point is Death Valley National Park, at 282 feet below sea level.

Director Newton Drury advising that the National Park Service logo needed to visually represent its main purpose, “...like an arrowhead, or a tree, or a buffalo.” He made a rough sketch (right) and sent a note to Director Drury saying, “This may be the germ of an idea for a NPS emblem...a good artist may do something with it.”

DID YOU KNOW? The 1949 emblem designed by Dudley Bayliss was never actually used, but at least he got to keep his $50 winnings!

1951 & 1954 After receiving the idea from historian Aubrey Neasham, the official emblem was in development. The arrowhead has been considered the official logo of the National Park Service since 1951. It was designed by Herbert Maier and his team under the guidance of the new Director Conrad Wirth. Slight revisions were made and more details were added in later years. It began being used on plaques, brochures and patches on uniforms.

OL D L O G O (2 0 0 0) The old logo of NPS was established in 2000. The elements of the logo refer to what makes up the national park system. The Sequoia tree and bison symbolize nature and wildlife, the mountains and water represent scenic and recreational values, and lastly, the iconic arrowhead represents the history of the National Park Service.

WHERE W E S TA N D

OUR VISION With the spirit to inspire and change the lives of today and tomorrow we must learn from yesterday. Through various services and partnerships with local organizations, the National Park Service will extend beyond preserving the wilderness, but preserve America’s rich history and connect urban communities with it’s natural resources. While the world continues to progress into a concrete, digital jungle, we will help protect and share the natural and cultural beauty of what makes the United States—united.

NEW BEGINNINGS

THE WHY The second National Park Service Director, Horace Albright once said, “ do not let the Service become just another executive government bureau; keep it youthful, vigorous, clean and strong.” With his words in mind, the new direction of the NPS logo reflects the idea of protecting our natural and cultural resources through inclusion, joy, and community.

CHAPTER 02 | OUR NEW LOGO

19

Designing the new logo to embody the rebrand of the National Park Service was a long process. It was important to not stray too far away from the brand’s identity that its community knew and loved. With that in mind the new logo pays homage to the Park Service’s origins while representing a brighter future.

20

V I SUA L S TA N DA R D S GU IDE

OUR NEW LOGO INTRODUCTION The new National Park Service logo takes inspiration from the intent of the original logo, which was to visually represent the role of NPS. Our new logo embodies the idea of protecting our natural and cultural resources together as a community. Doing so, we can make a difference in our homes, neighborhoods, country, and most importantly—Earth.

+ Roof (Home)

Our symbol is a blend of a house, city, forest, and mountains to represent the different areas of impact. In addition, our logotype is a custom wordmark. Using a balance of straight edges and rounded shapes help show the harmony between natural and urban environments. The colors derive from our environment—golden sun, pine green and lastly purple mountain majesties. Together, the colors signify endless growth, happiness, and possibilities.

Establishing clear space around the logo helps it achieve legibility and contrast when applied in conjunction with other context. LOGO VA R I AT ION S The new National Park Service logo is versatile and can be used for numerous applications. From its signature vertical lockup, to a horizontal lockup, there is a variation of the logo suitable for any occasion. Taking into consideration our customers’ needs, the logo can represented as a stand-alone symbol or logotype.

V E R T IC A L SIG N AT U R E Despite having many variations, the vertical signature is considered as our primary logo. This orientation can be used in most applications such as business systems and other forms of brand communication.

C H A P T E R 02 | L O G O S TA N DA R D S

HOR I Z ON TA L SIG N AT U R E The horizontal orientation of our signature is another version of our primary logo. Generally, this version can be used in place of the vertical to accommodate for spacing.

SYMBOL As a stand-alone logo, this is most suitable for smaller spaces as well as a simpler, basic form of the logo. This version is best used on smaller-sized products.

LOGOT YPE Our custom logotype is another suitable version to represent the brand. This form of the logo is the most basic form to identify the brand. In certain applications, the colors of each word can change to mimic the specific colorway of the primary logo.

OUR LOGO IN COLORS To embody the heart of what the National Park Service does, we established three core colors. Depending on the application, the new colors are suitable for both light and dark backgrounds. Generally, the signature logo it its iconic colorway should be used in a professional setting such as a business system. Opposite of that, the reverse signature on color is best for product application. The logotype can be applied the same way such as reverse type on a single color or vice versa.

LOGO IN BL ACK & WHITE In some cases, the black signature or the reverse signature logo will be necessary for situations such as product application and one-color printing. The logo can be used in black and white for better contrast and for single-color applications. Other advantages for using the black and white versions are for clarity and simplicity. When considering which version to use, please refer to our grayscale chart for specific percentage.

OUR M A R K To help establish the National Park Service’s identity, we designed a simple yet meaningful graphic that can be used throughout our materials. Named “Sammy Sunrise,” the shape is made of a half circle deriving from our logo. It’s meant to communicate the idea of growth and new beginnings—much like the reason behind our rebranding. The sunrise itself symbolizes our environment and our future when it’s cared for. The color could be inverted depending on it’s application, but there’s a youthfulness to the organic shape and its bright yellow color which is inspired by Horace Albright’s vision for the Park Service. Sammy Sunrise can be used in different ways such as a statement or even a supporting graphic. It can command a space by drawing attention to itself, or in a subtle manner hidden in a corner. Common uses are backdrops for bringing attention to fun facts or phrases or as a full-bleed image.
