In the Global Review in this issue we summarise some of the highlights in the marina industry for 2014. The review looks primarily at marina developments and ongoing projects rather than the specific equipment developed over this period. But manufacturers were busy, too. SF Pontona launched Prodock – a lightweight, long-life, corrosion-free and cheaper alternative to heavy-duty concrete pontoons; Green Bay Systems in Norway released a composite finger pontoon system; Voyager Industries added Titan Deck Open X-Series decking boards to its portfolio; Bellingham Marine installed its firstever composite walers on a dock system at Dania Beach, Florida; and Superior rolled out Waterscape, the first commercial and domestic Adaptive Floating System (AFS), in Australasia and Europe. Waterscape won the International Superyacht Society (ISS) Excellence in Innovation Award. Eaton Marina Power & Lighting introduced the IEC power pedestal, a stainless steel unit styled to comply with IEC 709 standards; Rolec developed exclusive superpowerful Megamaster units for the superyacht market; TDI Products introduced inbuilt ground protection for its Ensign units as ‘protection in the pedestal’; and Maricer launched the sleek semi-recessed Neptune pedestal range and, most recently, the Admiral Control metering and control system. HyPower added a host of extra power distribution products to its extensive portfolio and Seijsener developed an enhanced, customised Atlantic pedestal for service in Dubai. Poralu Marine subsidiary Nautiscaphe released its Ellipse anchorage system for the open ocean and DualDocker introduced a universal soft adapter for use with its docking arm for large-boat mooring. Spanish company Silkus installed its first OneSailor boat mooring device and launched the system to marina operators worldwide via the OneSailor International Marina Network. HydroHoist released HydroLaunch control options and the HarborHoist level lifting frame and Marine Travelift contributed to the drystack sector with the all-new M2300 Mariner forklift. Kropf Industrial delivered the first self-propelled version of its innovative Conolift sling lift trailer to an Ontario-based marina and Wiggins Lift manufactured a negativemast marina lift for Sanibel Harbour Yacht Club in Ft Myers, Florida, that is believed to be the largest of its kind in the world. Scribble Software launched a true native marina-specific mobile app as part of its new Marina and Recreational Internet Applications Home (MARIAH) and released MarinaOffice 7.7, the most powerful in the series to date. Last but not least, Poralu Group sister company Rotax launched All Nautica; a one-stop equipment and accessories business. Further innovation is sure to follow in the months to come. C&NM to lead Harmony Victoria Marina project for Gold UK: The Homes and Communities Agency (HCA), site owner of the new Victoria Marina at East Cowes on the Isle of Wight, has selected Camper & Nicholsons Marinas (C&NM) to lead the development. Subject to contracts, C&NM will work with Westcourt Real Estate to redevelop the marina and bring forward detailed proposals for other key buildings on the site. It is the first project C&N has undertaken in the UK in ten years.

UK/AUSTRALIA: The Yacht Harbour Association (TYHA), a group association of the British Marine Federation (BMF), and the Marina Industries Association (MIA) – the Australia-based association that supports the Australasian and Asia-Pacific regions - have signed an agreement to harmonise the TYHA and MIA Gold Anchor schemes.

Paul Flatt, HCA senior development manager, said: “The proposals for a new marina are bold and ambitious and we need a development partner who shares this vision and has a track record of success.” “Camper & Nicholsons’ name has a strong historic connection to the Solent area,” he continued. “This is an exciting opportunity to apply their extensive international experience in marina development and operation in the UK on one of the remaining key elements in the regeneration of East Cowes.” The development of a 400 berth marina received detailed planning permission in 2013. Further detailed plans for development, to be announced next year, are expected to include: improvements to the Columbine building to create a mix of

Committee approves St John plan USVI: The St John Coastal Zone Management Committee approved the controversial major permit application for St John Marina in Coral Bay on 1st October. The project is being forwarded by Summer’s End Group LLC, which plans to build a 145-slip marina with a mix of slip sizes up to superyacht capacity. Related upland development could follow in a second phase subject to permissions.

The new partnership will be introduced over the next three years in line with the rolling programme of re-accreditation. During this period, the two schemes will run in tandem until the single scheme is finalised. The agreement defines the territories for which each organisation is responsible so as to ensure efficiency and best customer service. Sarah Hanna, chairman of TYHA, commented: “This is a momentous moment for the Gold Anchor Scheme. It is the beginning of the future for us and the start of a long partnership between TYHA and MIA. Collaborating together will hugely benefit marina operators worldwide.” Jeff d’Albora, director of MIA, said: “This powerful new partnership between MIA and TYHA presents a significant opportunity for the further development of the worldwide marina industry through the development and growth of the Gold Anchor scheme. The collective expertise and experience within the two organisations is formidable and I look forward to a significant expansion of Gold Anchor through this partnership.”

METS 2014 beats yet more records NETHERLANDS: METS 2014 proved to be yet another record-breaking B2B success with 21,086 visitors and 1,358 exhibitors. The show attracted more international visitors (a rise of 6.5%) and more decision-makers (up 3%).

The Marina & Yard Pavilion (MPY) shared in the upsurge in terms of exhibitors and visitors although ‘quality’ rather than ‘quantity’ was the watchword. “We feel there were fewer visitors than we received when we exhibited in the Swedish Pavilion but more relevant potential customers,” confirmed Lars Brandt of Seaflex. “We are committed to continuing to exhibit in the MYP in coming years,” he added. Ramon van Asselt of Orsta Marina Systems Nederland agreed that the MYP attracted “focused visitors” and felt they were “ready to do business,” and James Beaver of first-time exhibitor Moffatt & Nichol reported “some strong enquiries.”

Ready for business in the MYP 2014. Virginie Segura of Poralu, France, commented: “The MYP was successful for us due to the discussions we had in terms of projects and partnerships. It would be a great idea to duplicate this event in other territories like Asia and the Middle East as markets are expanding in these regions and there is no appropriate show.” Lars Gunnar Odhe of SF Marina, Sweden, summed up as follows: “We really enjoyed exhibiting in the MYP at METS. We consider it to be the best show and meeting place in the world for our market.” METS 2015 will be held 17th-19th November in Amsterdam.

Proposals invited for New Melones USA: The Bureau of Reclamation has announced a business opportunity for marina concession development and operation at New Melones Lake, Calaveras County, California. Proposals from interested parties are invited. Reclamation envisages a new concession operation that includes a marina with fuel facility, wastewater pump-out, pleasure craft rentals, commercial houseboat rentals, slip rentals, private slips for houseboats and seasonal swing moorings. Additional services required include retail sales, overnight cabin accommodation, full-service RV sites, parking, dry boat storage and

marine mechanic services. Landbased support facilities will include paved and unpaved roads, a marina access ramp, toilets and landscaping. Some facilities will be provided by Reclamation. PM Douglas endorses future for marinas ST KITTS & NEVIS: Prime Minister the Rt Hon Dr Denzil L Douglas (above) stressed the importance of marinas to the overall development of St Kitts & Nevis at a ceremony welcoming the first boat to dock at Christophe Harbour Marina. Dr Douglas pointed out the benefits to all nationals of attracting high-end visitors to the islands and encouraged them to think positively about Christophe Harbour and other future marina developments. “I urge Kittitians and Nevisians to begin to study and research the operations and needs of the yachting industry. I urge you, with imagination and insight, to identify the requirements of yacht owners everywhere, and then I urge you to equip and position yourself to benefit from the economic opportunities that this sector creates,” he said. Christophe Harbour Marina will be further developed in phases and is a designated port of entry for the Federation. “It will be equipped with Customs and Immigration services and will be accessible to all vessels,” Dr Douglas confirmed.

Marina precinct funding approved NEW ZEALAND: Tauranga City Council and the Bay of Plenty Regional Council have signed a heads of agreement that defines the main conditions and obligations for the $5 million regional infrastructure fund investment in the Tauranga Marine Precinct project. The project, which will cost a total of $10 million, will create a purpose-built marine servicing facility and related infrastructure at Sulphur Point. It will provide a base for a cluster of boat building and refit businesses and associated marine services, and will have a small area of associated marina berths. It is expected to provide jobs and significant economic value to the regional economy. Auckland-based marine consultant Phil Wardale has been appointed project manager and will split his

time between his consultancy work in Auckland and the Tauranga project. He was involved in the business case, which was successful in securing the council funding. “This project is looking to leverage the strong support from the two local authorities and the local marine community to create a unique facility in a strategic location,” he said. “The marine precinct will become a centre of excellence for marine activity and provide long term employment and economic development opportunities.”

Visitor marina plans progressing MALDIVES: Sea-Alliance Group has announced a collaboration with Maldives Yacht Support (MYS) to develop a full service marina for transient yachtsmen and charter operators.

Swift build for ‘small boat’ marina GIBRALTAR: Marinetek Finland has been commissioned to build a 700berth marina for small local boats of up to 10m in length. The project is to be completed in a single phase with a tight timeframe. The marina is being built at the same time as a fixed breakwater, which will not only protect the berths but also provide superyacht and passenger ship berthing and serve as a public promenade. The fixed structures are being completed by the main contractor Gibraltar Joinery & Building Services and the end customer is the Gibraltar Government.

Opua expansion approved

As completion is due for June 2015, Marinetek has had to speed up production in order to supply 140 large pontoon units and 350 mooring fingers. “We are using five different production lines in three countries and our weekly production is 20 units. The fingers are being produced in Sweden and Latvia with four production lines,” explains Marinetek Group technical director Ville Leisti. “This is a good example of how our ‘One Marinetek’ strategy works when big, fast deliveries are needed,” he adds.

NEW ZEALAND: Three independent commissioners have granted consents for a multimillion dollar expansion of Opua Marina in the coastal marine area of the Kawakawa River.

In addition to swift completion, the customer demanded a long-life system with low life-cycle costs. Marinetek therefore chose to supply its AllConcrete pontoons as they require minimal maintenance and have a 50 year design life. For the same reason, long-life Titanium Hybrid Seaflex was chosen as the mooring system. Rolec pedestals with smart card electricity and water services are to be installed along with a solar powered lighting system.

Far North Holdings Ltd (FNHL) applied for 20 consents in order to implement nearly one hectare of reclamation, extensive dredging and room for 170 new berths.

This is the third project Marinetek has secured recently in Gibraltar as it also won contracts to build a prestigious bathing pavilion and a first-phase commission for Marina Bay.

MYS is currently working with the Maldives Government to gain required approvals. MYS director Ahmed Abdulla Afeef has already won major government concession to improve the regulations for charter yachts, enabling them to visit the islands for longer periods than previously allowed. Sea-Alliance Group director, Roy Klajman, commented: “We have developed a number of marina projects in the Red Sea and eastern Mediterranean and handle full management and operation of the 5 Gold Anchor Karpaz Gate Marina in northern Cyprus. Following our strengthening relationships with MYS we are seeking to bring our expertise to the islands in a joint venture to create a high quality resort marina, which will provide facilities up to superyacht requirements.” “We are currently talking to a Dutch engineering company that will handle the build process but we are not expecting this to happen overnight and are looking for additional investors to join us in the project. With owners looking for new winter cruising waters, the beauty and tranquillity of the Maldives will be a strong attraction when we can provide the facilities they need,” he added. The Maldives currently has one small marina attached to a remote resort. The Sea-Alliance marina will be situated on the main atoll for best communications and accessibility. With the high season starting in November, the Maldives is a credible alternative to the Caribbean for superyacht owners based in the Mediterranean looking for a yearround season.

Windermere project wins green light UK: Acting as agents for Windermere Aquatic, Marina Projects has secured vital planning permission for the extension and reconfiguration of Windermere Quays Marina at Bowness on Lake Windermere. Marina Projects director, Mike Ward, commented: “This is a prestige project for us and shows the diversity of projects we deal with. This marina is a vital facility supporting tourism in the lakes and the 80 extra marina berths it will provide and the mix of berth sizes provided is very important.” The Windermere Aquatic site is recognised as providing a strategic development opportunity to create a world-class visitor attraction. Lake Windermere is England’s largest natural lake and is a key visitor

destination within the Lake District National Park. Planning had to take into account the sensitive natural surroundings; navigational safety for other lake users; and the presence of wide ranging commercial and leisure craft and the different levels of competence from professional skipper to novice hire boat user involved. Grahame Armer, managing director of Windermere Aquatic, had to withdraw an earlier application in the face of fierce local opposition before appointing Marina Projects. He is therefore delighted with the outcome. “Marina Projects immediately understood my requirements and the challenges we have been facing including the need to engage with local

After the tsunami, better than ever USA: Three years after being devastated by the tsunami that was triggered by the 2011 earthquake in Japan, Santa Cruz Harbor in California is looking better than it ever did before. The marina is back in full operation with all docks in working order. The marina was rebuilt through a series of bids with a final price tag close to $12 million. Twenty of the docks were replaced and approximately 470 berths. The guest dock, boatyard dock and a portion of the rowing docks were also rebuilt. Bellingham Marine worked as the general contractor for much of the rebuild. “The Harbor was able to use a number of the existing pilings, which proved to be a tremendous saving in both time and expense,” said Steve Canaday, Bellingham manager of project development. There was, nonetheless, a lot of work including landside utility installations. Over the course of the rebuild more than 15 new utility vaults were installed and over

Santa Cruz Harbor in California has been substantially rebuilt and upgraded and is now in full operation. 15,000 linear feet of conduit was laid to accommodate upgrades to the marina’s electrical system. The Port District began its rebuild efforts just three months after the tsunami hit. U-dock, which sustained the most damage, was the first to be tackled. Following this, the rest of the docks that were damaged beyond repair were replaced. According to the Harbor, the order of dock replacement

was determined by need based on the extent of damage each dock had sustained and the amount of funding available. “It’s been a long process but our tenants have been great through it all,” said port director, Lisa Ekers. “Our driving goal was to move as fast as possible with the funds available and to keep the daily disruptions to the harbour to a minimum.”

Eden Marina will soon expand by 45 berths

The 2015 BMF Annual UK Marina Conference will be held 22nd-23rd April in Southampton, Hampshire. Next phase in Eden SEYCHELLES: Work has commenced on Basin 5 at the Eden Island development. Walcon Marine is installing pontoons around the rim of the circular marina and adding twin walkways to access a further 45 berths that project into the centre. Emerging from the recession Boosting berth numbers around the globe was once again a key focus and, last year, Asia took centre stage while the USA concentrated on improvement works and Europe progressed marina plans with caution. There were definite signs that the economy was brightening. Charlotte Niemiec highlights some of the developments in 2014. South East Asia also embarked on ambitious developments. In Malaysia, plans were unveiled for the visionary Melaka Gateway project – a massive new island development in Malacca. Comprising one natural and two manmade islands spanning 609 acres (246 hectares) with 15km (9.3 miles) of premier waterfront, it features an exclusive marina that will cater to 1,000 yachts. When complete, it will be the largest single marina complex in Asia. A nearby superyacht maintenance yard is included in the development plans – a much needed facility for the region.

A focus on Asia In China, Shenzhen Botongna Yacht Marina Company completed the first phase of 291 berths at Yajule Qingshui Bay Yacht Club in Qingshui Bay, Sanya. When complete, the facility will boast 780 berths and be the largest yacht club in Asia. Work was also well under way at Luhuitou Marina, the first public marina in Sanya. The addition of 129 berths here will bring the total to 201. In Shanghai, the 100-berth Huishan North Bund west basin marina officially opened for business, offering worldclass amenities. The importance of marina development in the Asia region was highlighted by the signing of numerous agreements, such as the cooperation agreement between ART Marine Marinas and New Design Architecture for the management of luxury marinas in China and Southeast Asia.

One°Marina Club in Singapore announced plans to develop an integrated marina resort in Vung Ro Bay, Vietnam. Set within a sheltered location, it aims to be an international nautical hub with private club, marina berths, hotels, dining and retail outlets, apartments, townhouses and villas.

Under Korea’s National Marina Development Plan, 17 new marinas providing berths for over 4,200 boats have been developed, five are under construction and a further 21 are at various planning stages.

GLOBAL REVIEW An eye on the Middle East Bahrain is set to compete with the best with the opening of Durrat Marina within the US$5 billion Durrat Al Bahrain resort complex. The marina stretches across three manmade islands in the crystal clear waters of the Gulf. In Kuwait, the incredible ten-stage Sabah Al-Ahmad Sea City project unveiled last year will occupy 64km2 (24.7 square miles) of desert land overlooking the Persian Gulf, with two marinas planned comprising over 1,300 berths. Over 6km (3.7 miles) of Ingemar floating pontoons and fingers, anchored by over 300 pilings, will moor 400 yachts up to 40m (131ft) in length. In Qatar, ‘Lusail City’ – a brand new city to be constructed on 72.5km² (28 square miles) on the desert coast along the Persian Gulf – Mourjan Marinas announced it would expand its marina from 49 berths to 142 in response to increasingly high demand for more berths in the country. Finally, Jumeirah Beach Hotel Marina in Dubai made history by earning a Marina Industries Association (MIA) 5 Gold Anchor award and accreditation under the MIA International Clean Marina Programme. It is the only UAEbased marina to have secured these accolades.

Developments down under For Australia and New Zealand, 2014 proved a busy year. A A$252 million development programme for Shute Harbour on the Whitsunday coast of Queensland, Australia, was given the green light. The resort will include 395 marina berths and associated marina facilities, alongside a hotel, retirement complex, managed resort, café, restaurant, retail outlets and cyclone shelter.

Image: Atkins In New Zealand, Tairua Marina – on the eastern side of the Coromandel Peninsula on the North Island – became the newest marina in the country. Total Floating Systems won the design/build contract for a 95-berth marina for boats of 8.4m (27.5ft) to 25m (82ft) in length. An opportunity for development was also recognised by Northland Port Corporation in its purchase of 230-berth Marsden Cove Marina and adjoining commercial complex on the east coast of the North Island of New Zealand. Northland saw the potential to make Whangarei Harbour and the marina a destination of choice for longdistance yachts arriving and departing from the country. The company’s vision includes a vessel haul-out facility, drystack, marine chandlery and a wide range of servicing facilities. Another major focus in New Zealand

over the past year was Waterfront Auckland’s enormous redevelopment plans for Westhaven Marina, the largest marina in the southern hemisphere. The Westhaven plan includes improved accessibility and enhanced facilities, with proposals to build an uninterrupted coastal pathway and numerous pontoon and pier upgrades.

Improvement works in the USA and Canada For the USA, last year’s focus was on reimagining and improving existing marinas, with Florida in the spotlight. One innovative marina project, Miami Mega Yacht Marina, is poised to attract superyachts following upgrades to its facility, which include covered slips for 16 megayachts of up to 656ft (200m) in length. Each will have covered parking for four vehicles, indoor storage,

Ideally placed to welcome transient boats, the 32-slip marina will include a village and gated community with 21 Key Weststyle cottages and a private pool. Elsewhere on the Intracoastal Waterway, developments were planned for Dania Beach, which will provide 120 slips from 35ft (10.6m) to 60ft (18.2m). A project initiated last year restored native beach dune landscaping, complemented with event lawns, beach portals, oceanfront promenade, pedestrian circulation routes and a new Harbour Office.

Outside of Florida, Pelican Rest Marina in Galveston, Texas, was successfully rebuilt following the extensive damage it suffered from Hurricane Ike in 2008. The District of Columbia’s southwest waterfront celebrated a significant milestone in March when, after eight years of planning and design, the Hoffman-Madison Waterfront Development team broke ground on ‘The Wharf’. The Wharf will be a world-class, mixed-use waterfront redevelopment on the mile-long historic Washington Channel, with a development area that stretches across 24 acres (9.7 hectares) of land and more than 50 acres (20.2 hectares) of water. When complete, it will feature 3.2 million square feet of new residential,

The first phase of the deep-water marina includes 50 slips, out of a total of 130, offering private, secure mooring for yachts up to 350ft (107m). It is scheduled to complete this year. The resort will offer various luxury accommodation options. In Canada, Milton Marina on the outskirts of Vancouver, British Columbia, opened for business. Located in a well-protected basin on the north arm of the Frasier River on Richmond Island, it has 220 slips for vessels of 30ft (9m) to 80ft (24m) in length and a drystack building for smaller boats, with full utilities provided at all slips. Additionally, the final stage in a five-phase regeneration project was completed at Thunderbird Marina in Marina City Club in Marina del Rey, California, is undergoing a major renovation due to complete early this year.

Off the south coast of Florida, in the Turks & Caicos islands, outline development permission was granted to Circle Holdings for a luxury resort hotel and marina at Turtle Cove. The US$100 million project is located on a 17-acre (6.9 hectare) vacant site with 775 feet (232m) of beach frontage and 1,300 feet (396m) of marina frontage on the famous Grace Bay. Subject to final

GLOBAL REVIEW West Vancouver. The entire marina system was removed and replaced with a new system that was configured with larger and more usable slip sizes to better suit the existing client base, resulting in a 608-slip marina with mixed-size slips and covered berths.

Cautious progress in Europe 2014 proved to be a relatively quiet year for Europe although there were notable developments. A project to build a 250-berth marina for vessels up to 74m (243ft) in Portonovi, Montenegro, began early in the year. Developments include a VIP yacht club, helipad, high-end residences and a dedicated pier for visiting superyachts, all located in the stunning bay of Boka Kotorska, which has excellent access to Adriatic cruising grounds. Elsewhere in Montenegro, Dukley Marina in the historic town of Budva joined Camper & Nicholson (C&N) Marinas 1782 Club and was scheduled to undergo a major redevelopment. The 330-berth marina is to be transformed

by a substantial breakwater and a 60% increase in berth numbers to position it as one of the most sophisticated marinas in the Mediterranean. In Spain, Formentera Mar was selected to oversee the new Marina Vela Barcelona under construction in the port of Barcelona. The marina will have wet berths for vessels from 15m (49ft) to 40m (131ft) and a three-storey drystack facility – a first for the port – to house 189 boats of up to 9m (30ft) in length.

GLOBAL REVIEW Construction work on a marina in Kalaja e Turres in Albania was scheduled to start last year. The new facility is set to be world-class and will have over 720 berths including moorings for superyachts up to 75m (246ft) in length. The marina is part of a broad redevelopment project which, at over €200 million, is the largest investment in Albania’s tourism industry to date. Hotels, residential villas, commercial outlets including shops, restaurants and cafés, golf, spa and other sports facilities are included in the plans. In July, La Rochelle Marina in western France commenced the first of two extensions that will increase its capacity from 3,600 to 4,800 berths. The end result will place La Rochelle as one of the two biggest marinas in France and among the five largest in Europe. In the UK, the first phase of a £5.8 million investment project at Premier’s Swanwick Marina on the south coast was completed. In our modern world, belonging often prevails over possession. This is the basis of many marketing strategies and, more than ever before, is adopted when promoting recreational boating. Sports clubs enliven marinas year-

round and yacht clubs offer prestige. Both generate economic returns and enhance visibility. The first yacht club in the world – Flotilla of the Neva – was founded by Peter the Great in Russia in 1712. In the 19th century this became The Yacht Club of Saint Petersburg; an ambassador of a past grandeur that is gradually being regained through sporting activity. Other clubs evoke different styles and are often twinned with clubs of similar rank that are sometimes related to different leisure pursuits. Cortina d’Ampezzo, the famous skiing resort in the Italian Alps, for example, twins with a nautical base in Marina del Cavallino. Style here is all smart blazers and intense sailing programmes but elsewhere the atmosphere can be family-oriented or even quiet and relatively rural according to the customer base. The Club Nautico Mugello in the heart of the Tuscan countryside, for example, is converting farmers, hunters and passionate motorcyclists to yachting. “The highest goals must be pursued collectively,” says Roberto Perocchio, chairman of the ICOMIA Marinas Group, councillor of UCINA, president

It is only possible to understand trends and anticipate events if you have a world view. Economic benefits are there, of course, but from the outset were considered less important than the offering of quality. “Our objective was to have confidence when referring clientele who visit our marinas,” Fraser explains. “Member marinas participate for economic benefit, certainly, and C&N marinas that are our own will no doubt benefit from visits from other club members but economics was not the driver behind the initiative.”

The C&NM 1782 Club gives both the customer and marina operator comfort because it is integral to a recognised brand. “The sense of belonging plays a part, I imagine, as the ability to use the brand offers a level of quality endorsement for customers. Some benefit from high end social and leisure facilities (e.g. Yacht Club de Monaco) and others benefit more from sailing and cruising clubs for weekend regattas, training of your sailors etc. It’s definitely an advantage and the same goes for our kind of club, which can be a driving force for local economic development in terms of promoting a destination and its facilities. This attracts yachts, brings in revenue from berthing and boosts shoreside spending.”

“Our yacht club runs activities in Russia and abroad. We always try to promote the image of St Petersburg as the marine capital of Russia,” says club commodore, Vladimir Liubomirov, skipper of Russian yacht Bronenosec. In its efforts to promote sailing, with the help of Gazprom and Swan’s cooperation, the yacht club has won fame on the world race circuit. Swan 60 Bronenosec represents the yacht club and from 2012 to 2013 it performed in ten international regattas. The club also plays host to its own St Petersburg Class Yacht Week, less glamorous than the Yacht Club Monaco Classic Week but nonetheless a key sailing event on the Baltic. “We believe that our city can assume a rightful place among the main sailing centres of the world and

Marketing the club in association with its historic nautical environment is also high on the agenda and the club is heavily involved with the reconstruction of the battleship Poltava. “Our main goal is to create a museum to mark Russia’s ‘lost’ maritime history. During the time of Peter the Great, the first sailing ships for the Russian Navy were built in St Petersburg but there are no visual reminders today of this. Poltava was the first battleship built for the St Petersburg Admiralty and its reconstruction is thus probably the best way for the public to engage with our naval history.” The overall marketing aim is thus mixed. “Our formula is a diversity of approach,” Liubomirov explains. “Aside from commercial shipping and the navy, there are plenty of marine activities for everyone in St Petersburg thanks to our long-standing nautical traditions. We seek not only to promote sport but also to revive history and offer other leisure activities. In our yacht club we appeal to all. We have Olympic athletes and amateur sailors, windsurfers and kitesurfers, naval historians and the carpenters who are building the Poltava replica.”

As the need to offer a competitive edge becomes ever more apparent, marinas can make the most of an increasingly improved service-focused culture to promote their facilities as attractive waterfront venues. Conferring an intrinsic prestige upon any event, a marina environment can offer a unique backdrop for event organisers and an appealing and exclusive location for visitors. Perhaps the most important lesson to have been learned throughout this experience is the value of working together with others: visiting sailors - amongst them experts in many interesting fields; groups and associations; local authorities and businesses resident in the marina and with shared promotional objectives who

celebrate its 20th year, has recently incorporated a successful support system for the over 80 participants, connecting each with a local business. These mini sponsors are then invited to join in with the race preparation’s social events and the ensuing community that builds up around the fleet ensures that the regatta is recognised and endorsed by host port localities. Calero Marinas’ annual open day, inspired by following criteria set out in the Blue Flag Campaign’s environmental management guidelines, coincides with World Environment Day and World Oceans Day. Last year’s event included information panels, presentations and an artistic installation on the subject of marine plastic pollution, an important topic for experts at the island’s Biosphere Reserve office. Buoyed by the cause, the group was then inspired to work with a visiting expedition yacht engaged in plastic pollution studies to connect with local educational groups – all of which consequently became an attractive news item for the local press. The other side of the open day focuses on introducing newcomers to the sea and so the event is run with local watersports schools. People who had never tried sailing were delighted to give it a go and take the opportunity to enjoy special rates - and schools managed to attract new clients. A spectacular and informative safety and rescue demonstration was also provided, creating plenty to offer people of all ages. The wider marina community, however, is its own source of

inspiration. One of the most rewarding aspects of working in the marina industry has to be the palpable sense of cooperation and camaraderie prevalent within both individual sites and wider international networks. TransEurope Marinas for example, is now a 25 year old association based on little more than what was originally a desire to help mostly small family-run marinas hold their ground against the impending threat of larger more commercial chains. The group has expanded to now include over 65 marinas in eight different countries and still retains an attractive informality whilst offering an effective network solution to cruisers looking to sail within Europe. Beyond increased visitor revenue and providing a valuable promotional platform, benefits for marina members derive from knowledge sharing, where marina managers openly support each other with advice and suggestions gleaned from individual experience. Working alone and with very limited budgets, individual marinas achieve spectacular results, many now organising sailing skills and boat safety workshops, open days or successful charity events. On a more basic but no less effective level, a number of the members engage with local stakeholders to promote typical gastronomy at a reduced cost to visiting sailors; a most welcome introduction to a new destination. Assuming any of these activities inevitably requires allocating extra time and resources, the cost of which can be hard to justify in terms of short-term economic growth. This is sometimes

Photo: www.jamesmitchell.eu where a strong and dedicated team, motivated by locally shared concerns (charitable causes, environmental issues, or simply an overriding desire to go out racing) can dictate whether the event will sink or swim! An event can meet myriad immediate objectives nonetheless; berth holders welcome an enhanced social programme in their marina or the chance to learn or practise skills offered by experts; tenants and other stakeholders profit from the publicity generated by the event and an attractive platform to showcase their product or service, and visitors enjoy the chance of a different family day out and an appealing introduction to an exciting new lifestyle. Relationships are strengthened in the interest of pursuing shared goals and the marina enjoys great visibility within its chosen sphere and, as a consequence, ideally boosts visitor numbers. To return to Jimmy Cornell’s Atlantic Odyssey and the popular cruising seminars, his decision to offer the free talks and discussions was inspired by his own positive experience: “As a passionate sailor who has had the good fortune to spend most of the last 40 years roaming the oceans of the world, I feel that I have a duty to give something back to the international cruising community. With the same aim in mind, before the start of the Atlantic Odyssey in November 2014, I decided to hold a week of seminars covering essential aspects of long distance sailing, including practical demonstrations and offering opportunities for social interaction with other sailors planning a transatlantic voyage. Rather than limit attendance only to our own participants, it was agreed to invite any sailors who may be in Lanzarote to join the seminars.” The resoundingly successful response was such that in Marina Lanzarote, a new facility having been launched officially only two weeks previously, the cruising seminar week opened its doors to pontoons filled with international sailing visitors; the seminars featuring even greater numbers of non-rally cruisers than rally participants. Superior signs MoU with Scotra Superior of Australia has signed an MoU with South Korean company Scotra, an established components manufacturer that has successfully diversified into the pontoon and marina sector. Superior international sales manager, Phil Hudson, anticipates working with the company on several new marinas in the Busan region in the next two to three years. The partnership will boost Superior’s presence in the region, where it has already completed projects with above average design requirements. On the Han River in Seoul, for example, freezing conditions in icy waters (see inset photo) required a bespoke solution. “What made this project so challenging was the need to ensure that the base polyethylene and

aluminium products could withstand the additional forces from the ice,” Hudson said. “This only worked in a confined space where whole ice floes did not shift.” In Shanghai, China, Superior has just finished the second stage of a berthing installation along an upstream section of the North Bund. According to Hudson, there is also a very strong current, swells and tidal change of 1.8 to 2m as well as constant wake from passing ships. Superior thus set out to construct a marina that was “larger, stronger and flexible” and able to roll with the water while remaining stable. “We used our high grade Elite concrete deck pontoon system, which is ideal for this situation,” Hudson confirmed. The company is currently involved in major marina construction and refit projects in Dubai, Fiji, Malaysia and Australia. Many face extreme conditions such as intense heat and UV exposure, monsoons, sub-zero temperatures or tidal extremes.

Oyster fishing in Oman... Almouj Marina in Muscat, Oman, has announced a pioneering eco experiment that will see the region’s first installation of oyster long-lines. These will potentially contribute to the slowing of the worldwide decline of oyster production. The project, which is the first of its kind in the Middle East, is spearheaded by Dr Olivier Guelorget, an aquaculture advisor to the Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries. It involves the installation of a 100m long-line. A long-line is a rope anchored at the bottom of the sea at both ends with the middle being maintained at the surface of the water with buoys. The oysters are attached to ‘droppers’ from the surface line allowing good water movement to facilitate their growth. Successful tests in May 2014 led to the growth of 10,000 juvenile oysters, hung in baskets in the sea. This corresponded to over a year’s growth for the same type of oyster in, for example, French waters. Almouj Marina manager, Khalil Abu Jaber, was delighted that the marina was selected for the experiment but emphasised that marina customers were given every consideration during the process. “Our guests’ convenience is at the forefront of our minds and it was important to ensure that the oyster long-lines would have minimal operational or visual impact, and that the ecological benefits were in line with Almouj Marina and The Wave,” he said. Business South is also supporting the initiative. The Solent oyster fishery was once the largest self-sustaining native oyster stock in Europe, employing 700 people with up to 450 boats working in the fishery. Today, the fishery is closed with insufficient oysters to sustain a commercial fishery, and just a handful of boats. Not only has the loss been seen in unemployment and the local food source but native oysters also

provide critical ecosystem services by filtering and purifying water, contributing to coastal defences and providing important ecological habitats. BLUE has already clearly demonstrated its capabilities to gain results elsewhere in the UK, at Lyme Bay in Dorset, where it achieved a positive outcome in its project to establish a scientifically-informed,

sustainable and equitable fishery, bringing together previously opposed parties and creating a management plan which implemented a number of important initiatives. Lyme Bay’s fishermen are actively involved in the process to secure a sustainable fishery for themselves and future generations – a process that creates jobs and improves the local economy. A cluster of marinas in Australia can proudly call themselves ‘Fish Friendly’ under a Clean Marinas addon scheme. Fish Friendly Marinas is an information campaign and accreditation system focusing on marina fish habits. It was developed by the Department of Primary Industries (DPI) in collaboration with the Marina Industries Association (MIA) and the NSW Boating Industry Association (BIA) and is attached to MIA’s International Clean Marinas Programme. It is available to marinas across the Asia Pacific region. ENVIRONMENTAL MEASURES A battle to keep marine pests away from the pristine Fiordland waters is high priority for South Island government and environment groups. applicant), be easily acquired, easily administered and be effective in the isolated Fiordland environment. The result was the Fiordland Clean Vessel Pass concept. The pass, required for all vessels wishing to enter the FMA, would consist of a statement from vessel owners/operators that they had read and understood their responsibilities in relation to ensuring their vessel met ‘clean vessel, niche area and gear standards’.

A pioneering Pathway plan Fiordland in the south-western corner of the South Island of New Zealand is as beautiful as it is remote. The west coast is deeply indented by 14 fiords (fjords) spanning 215km of coastline and is an idyllic destination for any yacht owner. But will the owner be leaving behind an environmental hazard? In April 2014, the Fiordland Marine Pathways Management Plan Steering Group met for the first time. They had been tasked to develop a plan to minimise the risk of marine pests being transported into the Fiordland (Te Moana o Atawhenua) Marine Area (FMA) on vessel hulls and gear. Representatives from Environment Southland (ES), the Fiordland Marine Guardians (Guardians), the Ministry for Primary Industry (MPI), the Department of Conservation (DOC) and advisors with specialist knowledge formed the steering group. During the very first meeting a report came in of a motor yacht heading to Fiordland with small patches of the Mediterranean fanworm Sabella spallanzanii attached to its hull. It was completely by chance that this harmful marine pest was discovered at all and it was incredibly lucky that the diver who was checking the hull for fuel efficiency recognised it so that it could be cleaned off. If the check had not been made, Sabella might now be settling within Fiordland’s special sheltered inner fiords with potentially devastating impact. Vessels and their gear provide the major pathway for marine pests to reach the FMA – and all types of vessel can be involved, from large tourist

vessels through to small trailer boats. At least Sabella was only a scare. Not so the Japanese kelp Undaria pinnatafida, where a single mature specimen was found on a barge mooring line in remote Sunday Cove, Breaksea Sound, in April 2010. Since then, there has been a concentrated effort to locally eliminate Undaria from the site that has involved diving teams making trips every month and the removal of approximately 1,900 plants. The Undaria response programme is scheduled to continue until July 2015 and is looking very promising. However, the Undaria response has shown just how resource-intensive responding to a marine pest can be after it has arrived.

Passes would be automatically generated upon completion of a form on a designated website where advice about cleaning methods and facilities would also be available. What’s next? To draft a proposal for consideration by ES, the steering group must meet the Pathway Management Plan provisions defined in the Biosecurity Act 1993. Given this is the first Pathway Management Plan proposal, there are likely to be policy and implementation issues to resolve along the way. But the group hopes to deliver the proposal to ES by June/July 2015. If the Council decides to proceed with the draft plan, it may carry out formal consultation. Armed with the knowledge that the key objective was to prevent pests getting into the area in the first place, the group started work on the pathway plan by focusing on cleaning standards. In September 2014, group members and advisors with tourist, commercial and recreational fishing knowledge and experience, spent two days considering ways to reinforce the clean vessel message and ensure vessels entering or residing in the FMA are meeting the clean vessels standards. They wanted a provision that would require minimum effort on the part of the vessel owners/ operators, involve no cost (to the

The Bellingham Marine Scholarship winner, David Osman, attended the BMF AMM course in Southampton in October 2014. This involved five days of lectures, site visits and group work with participants in this instance coming from eight countries. Osman commented: “Despite some obvious differences in operations – like 12m tides, locks, salt bins at the top of ramps, drying marinas (where the tide goes out and boats are left ‘dry’) and hawk men (a man with a trained falcon used to deter small birds) – the trends and challenges faced by our industry are similar.” He observed that boats are getting bigger; environmental compliance and regulations are becoming more stringent; there is a strong focus on business development in an attempt to keep marinas occupied through difficult trading times; and a never ending attempt to keep on top of technological changes to keep businesses at the forefront in terms of service delivery, operational and process efficiency. “There are also very positive indicators around the globe that we have been through the worst of the recession and things are on the up,” Osman said. John Spragg, general manager Bellingham Marine Australia, was delighted that Osman had gained a lot from the experience. “Bellingham understands the importance of industry

education and the development of global networks to strengthen our industry. David has clearly been an excellent ambassador for this region,” he noted. The MIA AMM course in Sydney was a short 12,000 mile hop from the UK for Marinetek scholarship winner Alistair Clarke and, from the moment he touched down, he knew why Sydney was a major tourist destination. He was also impressed with the scale of the marine industry in the area. The course, held in Broken Bay in September, included marina professionals from Australia, Fiji, Thailand, Singapore, Hong Kong and New Zealand. “It was clear from the start that everyone had a significant amount of experience in the marina industry, ranging from design and build of marinas, project

management, environmental aspects, operations etc.,” he said. Clarke reported that the best and most fulfilling part of the course was the group project, which focused on running Akuna Bay Marina, a facility on the Ku-ring-gai Chase National Park in the Hawkesbury River system. “Suffice to say, all groups got little sleep for the next few days as we worked hard on our presentations,” he observed. “An experienced panel of marina professionals listened to each group on the Friday morning, providing valuable comment and feedback. This was by far the most rewarding part of an excellent course.” The GMI hopes to offer a similar opportunity to two further marina managers through its scholarship programme for this year.

First for Asia

Trevor Fong, head of marina management at Keppel Land Hospitality Management and general manager of the multi-award winning Marina at Keppel Bay (MKB) in Singapore is the first Certified Marina Professional (CMP) in Asia. He received his certificate at a ceremony in Sydney last October. CMP applicants are required to have successfully completed the AMM course and demonstrate a minimum of five years’ senior management experience in the marina industry. Applicants are also required to submit a 5,000 word report on a marina related topic that will become a valuable reference for the industry. Fong’s report focused on MKB’s business strategy to increase revenue from visiting superyachts. It also included an overview of the wider superyacht industry and highlighted issues that

impact on the yachting industry in Singapore and South East Asia. GMI chairman, Mick Bettesworth, said the awarding of the first CMP designation in Asia is a milestone. “Trevor’s achievement heralds the arrival of the Asian region as a significant and rapidly developing participant in the global marina industry. The delivery of the GMI career pathway for the marina industry in the Asia region is very important to ensure world class education and training underpins the

Boatyard staff decided to opt for the TM30 to support the existing hoists and favoured MT for reliability and quality. “They needed a way to increase yard efficiency, both indoors and outdoors,” explained MT dealer, Dave Marshall of Kendrick Equipment. “They needed a highly manoeuvrable, versatile and robust machine.” According to Trevor Smith, senior travel lift operator at the yard, the transporter’s small footprint held great appeal. Other key features included crab steering and an

increased hydraulic lift option. “This option was perfect for the boatyard’s uneven terrain and it’s very helpful for blocking boats higher to accommodate work underneath, such as dropping drive shafts,” Marshall added. The TM30 was delivered in May last year and Smith said it took just four hours for the machine to go from its container to being fully operational. On-site training began immediately, the staff quickly became competent and, before too long, the boatyard began to benefit. The transporter added speed and precision when moving and storing vessels and thus improved overall efficiency.

“The machine has performed fully to expectations and has contributed to efficient use of our limited yard space,” Smith reported. Undercover storage is especially valuable during the wet winter months and the transporter has effectively doubled indoor capacity and thus increased revenue.

Plus Marine developed a pedestal called EVO made from 316L stainless steel with an IP65 rating. An LED embedded external methacrylate cover is incorporated for night time illumination. Mooring system wins design award Seadamp, an innovative mooring/docking system suitable for use in boats, pontoons, breakwaters and other floating structures, has won the 2014 Seatec Design Award. Developed by Italian company Seadamp Srl and patented internationally, the system comprises a piston with moving valves immersed in a mineral oil bath. These exploit the principle of hydrodynamic resistance to absorb and dissipate movement. The innovation lies in the design of the valves inserted at the base of the piston, which open and close alternately during the expansion and contraction of the system. In the expansion phase, when peak load is transmitted following a wave, the valves close leaving only small holes through which the mineral oil inside passes with difficulty. This holds back the stroke of the piston and consequently

dampens the kinetic energy reflected from the sea. During the return of the piston, the elastic component brings the piston back to its initial position and the valves turn. Special hydraulic fluids ensure that response fits the season, e.g. in winter when temperatures are lower, the viscosity and hence the stabilising effect increases. The extreme versatility of the system means it can be directly integrated into the hull of a boat or a pier or pontoon structure. It is totally watertight and suitable for various underwater applications. It also contributes to the preservation of harbour structures by significantly reducing stress on mooring chains.

The system can be easily disassembled, and all internal components are completely recyclable. The product is filled with 100% biodegradable hydraulic fluid, guaranteed by the European Ecolabel standard, and is claimed to be completely silent – eliminating the annoying problem of squeaks caused by many alternative systems.

Monitoring system launched at METS UK company Maricer launched the Admiral Control metering and monitoring system at METS, Amsterdam, last November. According to Maricer director, Ted Waring, the system took a year to develop and incorporates many special features. “Admiral Control has taken metering and monitoring systems to another level by offering various alarms, such as water leakage, disconnection of electricity supplies, along with other features that include pedestal lighting control and access to the system via smartphone or tablet using a unique secure pass code,” he says. With its intuitive

software, Admiral Control is compatible with most marina management software packages and can be operated in credit, prepayment or a mixture of both. Using the very latest in RF technology, it can easily be retrofitted into any marina without the need for cabling thus saving money, time and upheaval. Nigel Draper, Maricer UK and international general manager, believes that Admiral Control further enhances the company’s position as an emerging

market leader. And more is to come. “There are further products currently under development that we shall be launching over coming months,” he reveals. Brad Hunting Brad Hunting is the new general manager at Walcon Marine Australasia. Prior to joining Walcon, he spent six years in New Zealand as general manager of the Rocklabs Division of Scott Technology, an engineering and manufacturing group.
