Cruising more comfortably? As our January/February issue closes for press in December, the March/April issue is – from an editorial perspective – the first issue of each year. We mark the start to our calendar by launching our annual sister title Marina World Suppliers & Services and, as we are based in the northern hemisphere, look forward to the signs of spring and the advent of the new boating season. Our first major must-attend event of every year is the International Marina & Boatyard Conference (IMBC), held in the USA as January nudges into February. As the world’s biggest annual ‘marina and boatyard specific’ conference and exhibition, many see it as a barometer of the US marina market. If this is so, record attendance and positive delegate feedback indicate that while not flying high, the industry is looking to cruise more comfortably. Nowhere is this more evident than in the boatyard equipment sector where the purchase of upgraded boat hoists and transporters by operators from all over the world has witnessed a long awaited surge. Many new purchasing decisions are made to meet the needs of bigger, heavier vessels and thus broaden market reach and boost profits. Similarly, in the dockside sector, pedestals are being designed to meet more stringent standards and provide significantly more power than ever before. The ‘more is more’ philosophy is driven by marina owners seeking to offer berth holders ever better facilities. Europe’s largest private marina operator, MDL Marinas, has announced plans to spend £20 million on its UK marinas in the second phase of a £34 million programme. It believes the move reflects greater optimism within the marine sector and general improvement in the wider economy. This encouraging thought makes for a good start to the year but much depends on how the boating season pans out in the north and how new developments and refurbishment plans evolve south of the equator. As always, for any marina owner or operator looking to create better facilities, there are good educational and networking opportunities ahead for everyone to learn more about market trends, new technology and best profit ideas. South Dock investment UK: Southwark Council, London, has announced plans to refurbish South Dock Marina, a 203-year-old dock that is home to 130 residential boats. The refurbishment programme will include replacement decking, new toilet and shower facilities and installation of a new electrical distribution and service network that will enable customers to monitor their usage and pay accounts online.

Oyster Point upgrades USA: Oyster Point Marina, a municipal marina that offers San Francisco boaters direct access to the bay, has upgraded its docks. The marina’s old glue-lam timber pontoons at piers 8 and 11 have been replaced with Bellingham Marine concrete floating docks fitted with upgraded utilities and accessories. Demolition started in January 2013 and guest docks on pier 8 were the first to be replaced. The new dock provides 156 feet of side-tie moorage and is accessed via a 90ft ADA gangway. Power and potable water are available on the deck for visiting boats.

Tolo Harbour plans on hold HONG KONG: Plans to develop Tolo Harbour Centre, a marina at Pak Shek Kok, won support from the Town Planning Board but have stalled due to lack of government policy guidelines. The Board has called on Government to further study berthing demand and supply in Hong Kong and a tender for a consultancy study is being prepared. According to Paul Zimmerman of Designing Hong Kong, a task force meeting on ‘water-land interface’ discussed space issues and a proposed Marine Department study. The study

being proposed for government funding (to start in April) is a territory-wide assessment. The original proposal called for a 400 wet berth marina and 200 berth drystack. According to current statistics from the Hong Kong Development Bureau, Hong Kong has 2,280 berths and boat ownership is increasing by 6% per annum.

a boat launch, fuel dock and 300ft fishing pier. Other amenities include a 33-acre park with hiking and jogging trail, picnic area and beach.

Bayswater in land purchase NEW ZEALAND: Bayswater Marina on the North Shore, Auckland, has purchased the freehold title to reclaimed land it has leased since 2006. The owner, Simon Herbert, hopes to build a marina village on the site. Enjoying enviable views of Auckland city from its position in Waitemata Harbour, Bayswater has a 415-berth Bellingham pontoon arrangement for boats of 10.5 to 45m in length and extensive berth holder facilities. Herbert, who also owns Westpark Marina – the third largest in Auckland – believes the addition of a marina village will help secure the future for the marina and that inclusion of residential property will make such investment viable. Debate regarding the use of reclaimed land for residential properties continues, as the land was not reclaimed for this purpose.

Hotel floats to Ocean Village GIBRALTAR: A luxury 142m long yacht hotel, Sunborn Gibraltar, is now in place in its new permanent home at Ocean Village Marina. Ocean Village chairman, Gregory Butcher, extended a warm welcome to the floating hotel. “When we were contacted a year ago by a Finnish company hoping to bring a luxury yacht to Gibraltar, despite a clear need for five star accommodation, I had my doubts if would actually happen,” he said. “I am delighted to say that it did and, after extensive ground engineering works at the marina, Sunborn Gibraltar has become a prestigious addition to our complement of high profile tenants.”

Despite its length, the new hotel has resulted in a minimal loss of moorings and estate director, Neil Crawford, confirmed that it had opened the way for further improvements at the marina. “We are now in the process of reconfiguring the pontoons to make the marina more efficient and create more berths,” he revealed. “We will also be building a fixed pontoon walkway directly across the water from neighbouring Marina Bay to Ocean Village.”

Designer building as nautical hub

SPAIN: Barcelona-based superyacht destination Marina Port Vell (MPV) has completed the platform for an architect designed reception building that will offer superyacht captains, crew and guests stylish relaxation and office amenities. Incorporating Catalan cultural accents with architecture and interior design by Sergi Carulla and Oscar Blasco, the building stretches out into the sea on a fixed piled platform of 1,600m². It measures 2,750m² and is cloaked in a white concrete skin. The building, which also features 25 offices (for lease to complementary businesses) and terrace access, is planned as MPV’s own nautical hub within the broader Barcelona Nautical Cluster.

CMM to manage Biloxi Boardwalk USA: Coastal Marina Management (CMM) has secured a management contract for Biloxi Boardwalk Marina in Biloxi, Mississippi. The marina boasts a number of high end amenities, has wet slips for boats of 28 to 70 feet and the largest drystack on the Gulf Coast between Orange Beach and Galveston, Texas. CMM’s Scott Burt said the marina is in a “terrific location...very close to Mississippi’s exciting casinos” and represents a perfect fit for the company’s growing network of marinas.

MDL in £34 million marina spend UK: As a second phase in a long term investment programme, MDL Marinas has announced plans to invest a minimum of £20 million in its 19 UK marinas over the next five years.

New ‘Destination’ on Black Sea BULGARIA: Dinevi Marina, a private 300-berth facility situated in the northern part of Nessebar Bay, has joined ART Marine Marinas’ international ‘Destinations’ network. Destinations marinas are located in the UAE, Singapore, Turkey, China, Bahrain, Malaysia, Thailand and Oman. Bruno Meier, COO at ART Marine and head of its marina division, warmly welcomed the marina to the Destinations family. “I look forward to supporting the development of yachting

in Bulgaria and in the Black Sea region,” he said. “This marina network is not only about offering additional privileges to our berth holders but also aims to create stronger relationships and communication between the best and most exclusive marinas all around the world.”

Consultants appointed for Wyndham AUSTRALIA: UK-based Marina Projects and independent consultant Phil Wardale of Auckland, New Zealand, have been engaged to provide marina consultancy services for Wyndham Harbour Pty in Melbourne. Wyndham Harbour – a 73-hectare coastal community development on the northwest coast of Port Philip Bay – will include a marina with up to 1,000 berths, a 390 berth drystack, and residential and commercial premises. Further to a lengthy approvals process, construction work began on site in 2010 and the southern marina breakwater and central spine works were completed early last year. The first phase of buildings is now well under way. The consultancy team have been tasked to ensure that the marina fully complements the development. The range of issues and opportunities

New marina to open at Deacons

UK: Work to rebuild the marina at Deacons Boatyard on the River Hamble, Hampshire, is nearly complete. The new berths should be available in April. Walcon Marine worked with Deacons to finalise the design before building and installing pontoons for up to 119 boats of 8 to 12m in length. The project involved a reconfiguration of the pontoon arrangement and removal of pontoons that had been in place for up to 60 years. To provide better access from both land and water, the original system has given way to walkways and finger pontoons and additional deep water berths that are accessible at all states of the tide. Walcon installed its allwelded, modular System 21 pontoons. The company also built two new access

The Yacht Harbour Association (TYHA), UK held its first marina awards at the London Boat Show in January. The awards were sponsored by GJW Insurance, one of the largest insurers in the marine trade, and were open to marinas holding TYHA Gold Anchor Awards. The first award, presented to Cara Hodgson-Read from Caen Hill Marina, Wiltshire, UK by chairman of GJW Insurance, Mike Pope, was Employee of the Year. Cara was described as “extremely friendly, efficient, approachable and very welcoming.” Along with her husband, Rob, she also won the Inland Marina of the Year award. Plymouth’s Mayflower Marina won the British Marina of the Year award. Mayflower Marina is an independent marina situated at the entrance to the River Tamar in Devon. The award was presented by Royal Yachting Association (RYA) CEO, Sarah Treseder, and accepted by marina manager, Charles Bush (above). Cabo San Lucas Marina, a picturesque marina at the entrance to the Sea of Cortez in Mexico, scooped the International Marina of the Year award. The award was presented by Treseder to IGY executive vice president Kenny Jones. The nominations were reviewed by an independent panel of judges including representatives from TYHA, the RYA, Marina World and Motor Boat & Yachting. TYHA administrator, Libby Gordon, sees a bright future for the TYHA award: “These awards are an excellent way to acknowledge the hard work of marina staff, not only in the UK but all over the world,” she said. “We are grateful to our sponsors GJW Insurance for supporting this year’s awards and hope to build on the awards in future years.”

Eldean goes solar USA: Eldean Shipyard in Macatawa, Michigan, is investing in an array of 66 kW/ hr solar panels to sit on the roof of its boat storage building. The installation has been contracted to Hoekstra Electric. Once completed, the renewable electricity generating system will

operate in partnership with Consumer Energy’s Experimental Advanced

Renewable Program (EARP). This is a direct grid system, which means that Consumer Energy will be buying the energy and selling it to its customers. As a marina and resort, Eldean Shipyard depends on a healthy environment – clean and healthy lakes and fish – for its continued success. The solar panels will further its mission as a Certified Clean Marina.

Boost for Brighton UK: Premier Marinas has contracted Walcon Marine to renew pontoon fingers in the outer harbour of Brighton Marina. The work is part of a £750,000 improvement programme that also includes the installation of new Sureline dockside pedestals. MARKET UPDATE: SICILY Marina di Riposta or Porto dell’Etna in Catania is a key marina. The snow capped volcano is in the background. there is a five-point mooring system. Developments form part of Italy’s ongoing efforts to boost marina infrastructure despite a slow-down in market demand. Over the past five years, revenue generated from permanent long-term berth holders has decreased by 56% and annual berthing contracts by over 30%. In Sicily, the situation has been exacerbated by an increase of 600% in the cost of marina (port) concessions. This has now reduced to 400% and is still under discussion.

Plans progress despite occupancy challenges Sicily, the largest of Italy’s many islands, is popular with tourists and is an ideal stop-over for yachts en route to Greece, Turkey, Tunisia, the Adriatic and Malta. Island marinas are well established and constantly evolving. Donatella Zucca reports Aside from a stretch of industrial development on the Ionic coast, most of the coastline surrounding Sicily sits within natural park and protected land. The island has 89 port facilities, including 42 that are dedicated to leisure boats and are spaced no more than 30nm apart. Some have undergone or are undergoing renovation or expansion. Further projects are in the pipeline. The existing marina infrastructure owes much to a plan conceived in 2001 to increase marina berths to a total of 8,000 but, despite quality standards, progress has been slow when compared to other areas in the Mediterranean. Marinas tend to be concentrated in urban centres in response to local demand and summer tourism but, on average, they are not close enough to major road networks or airports. Current projects aim to redress this. Marinas of greatest interest include Marina di Riposto (Porto dell’Etna)

and Catania – which are located close to Etna – Messina, Milazzo, Marina di Portorosa and Taormina, where Giardini di Naxos Marina will soon open. Syracuse, Marzameni, Augusta Xifonio and Agrigento (Valley of the Temples area) boast Licata and Ragusa marinas, served by the airport at Comiso. Top notch marinas can be found in Palermo. These are close to the airport, the island of Ustica, the Aeolian Islands and Egadi, where

Ezio Rossi, who co-owns Porto Rossi in Catania, faces a delay to his plans for expansion. “It will not happen soon – for economic reasons,” he says. “We have a situation that prompts people to give up boating and berth ownership, even if they can afford it.” Evidence of this can be seen quite sharply to the south of the island where the coastline faces Africa. Marina di Ragusa and Marina Cala del Sole in Licata both have empty berths despite the fact that Ragusa is an important boating hub with many activities. Elsewhere, however, work is in progress. Castellammare del Golfo (Balestrate) Marina is almost complete; St Francio Marina in Trepani, a Drepanum Shipyard project, progresses; and Portopalo di Capo Passero in Syracuse and Marsala Marina await public consents. “Plans are ready. The challenge is to be able to implement them,” says John Arnone, general director of Infrastructure Sicily, the department responsible for public

economic aid. “Something has been done but the private sector is stimulated by the use of public resources and these are becoming scarcer. We need to focus on facilitating private enterprise – the market is open and foreigners are also welcome.” “We’re looking at marinas where there will be no foreclosure and where dedicated services cannot fail so long as an identity is established.” The length of each concession is determined according to the level of financial investment up to but not exceeding 99 years. For example, if a company invests €1 million, it will secure a concession of just a few years (not the average 40 years) but investing more in effect buys a longer lease. The Department of Environment & Land awards the state concessions. Problems arise in Sicily, as in Sardinia, from poor planning and marketing. Italian development companies, often oriented at the top end of the yachting sector, have suffered from lack of a single authority of reference owing to the fragmentation of skills involved in developing the marina. In Sardinia, much fanfare was accorded to new marinas but inadequate consideration often given to transport links etc.

Marine Partners will be responsible for communications during the various stages of work on Marina Capo d’Orlando in the province of Messina and for other marinas within the Marine Partners network. Capo d’Orlando has been financed by public funds to the tune of €7,416,000 (granted in 2006) and EU (Jessica Funds) of €12,608,471 and is expected to complete in 2015.

Photo: Gianfranco Guccioni that owns and is developing Marina di Ragusa and Giardini di Naxos in Taormina. “Giardini Naxos is part of our aim to develop port assets,” explains board member, Giulio Stanzione. “Investment in the project is around €31 million, with a 60 year concession.” “Normally, there are difficulties when starting a project,” Stanzione continues “but we work quickly and intend to complete Naxos in a year. We will then manage it.” Broader facilities are planned. “Taormina currently hasn’t the facilities for berthing cruise ships so we have integrated dedicated space for this on the breakwater.” The marina will have 411 berths up to 40m and 33 for local use. Megayachts and cruise ships will moor up on the outer breakwater, which encloses an 82,590m² basin. There is ample space for service buildings and car parking. Completion is scheduled for 2016.

“We are working on a strategic front. With the help of European Structural Funds, there will soon be finance available for the first section of a road that will speed up the connection between Victoria and Comiso Airport,” Arnone reveals. “In the future, however, the focus will be on the railroad; a network that must be Porto Rossi is a family-owned marina in Catania that will ultimately be expanded.

Marina Cala del Sole in Licata is a beautiful marina with over 1,000 moorings. Occupancy is currently quite low but private owners confirm that the marina retains popularity for wintering foreign yachts. Work is currently under way on an attractive associated housing development. The marina offers all modern shoreside facilities for visitors, owners and crew and enjoys proximity to the Valley of the Temples and Comiso Airport. Porto Rossi in Catania was established initially by Peter Rossi in 1961 as a Mercury and Mercruiser Marine dealership. It is still family owned and caters for small (mainly

Consolidating global business UK-based Rolec Services is significantly boosting its service network on an international basis. Managing director, Kieron Alsop, confirms that the company is currently in negotiations with a number of potential partners to open Rolec service centres in six key regions in the world. The first, which opens in Dubai next month (April), is strategically located to support over 70 marinas and waterfront locations in the Middle East that currently have Rolec equipment. It will offer a variety of services, including: stocks of components and equipment; emergency call-out; annual service and support contracts; and general advice and assistance. The centre boasts a full product showroom and is supported by trained sales and design engineers, and trained installation and maintenance engineers. “The service centres will provide both existing and new customers with the confidence that Rolec can provide a cost effective after sales service as well as general advice and support on all things related to marina services,” Alsop explains. “Following on from the first service centre in Dubai, we expect to have the second centre – in South East Asia – up and running in the near future, with a further four to follow during 2014/15.” Recent orders in the Middle East and S E Asia underscore the importance of the first two service centres. Further to delivering five MegaMaster units to Yas Marina in Abu Dhabi believed at the time to be the world’s largest marina services units - Rolec is now manufacturing an even more powerful MegaMaster for a private island marina in Qatar. Designed and manufactured in the UK factory, the unit measures 2,500mm x 3,000mm x 1,000mm and will service a luxury superyacht measuring around 125m in length. It will offer 250 amp, 400 amp and 2,000 amp three-phase electrical supplies complete with kW/ hr meter, amp meter, voltage meter and phase indicators. It will also provide 1

inch and 2 inch water supplies and LED amenity lighting, and will be equipped with removable crane lifting eyes for ease of installation. In S E Asia, Chinese eyes will be on a range of Spinnaker pedestals installed at Dalian Marina in the north eastern province of Liaoning; part of a complex designed to host the 12th Chinese National Games and the venue for the 6th China International Boat Show. Caribbean marinas reduce carbon footprint Pedestals designed and manufactured by Dockside Power have been installed in first phase projects for Bay Street Marina, Nassau, Bahamas and Christophe Harbour Marina, St Kitts, West Indies. Bay Street Marina, which accommodates vessels of 30 to 200 feet in length, has power ranging from 120/240V single phase for smaller vessels to 200 amp 120/208V threephase, 100 amp or 200 amp 480V three-phase for the largest. Power supplied for the larger slips at Christophe Harbour (for vessels of 250 feet and above) is 400 amp three-phase 480V, 400 amp 120/208V three-phase – and single phase for smaller vessels. Dockside Power has incorporated power monitoring into each system to enable the marina manager to control power and water at every slip from a computer or iPad. This also calculates all usage for billing purposes and can be operated by WiFi, fibre or Ethernet cable.

Registration is now open for the PIANC 2014 World Congress, to be held in San Francisco, California, USA from 1st to 5th June 2014. Guests at the IMCI anniversary gathering enjoyed a boat tour of Valetta Harbour before convening for the summit.

The International Marine Certification Institute (IMCI) has celebrated its 20th anniversary. The occasion was marked by a special summit in Valetta, Malta, during which guests were able to enjoy the scenic, cultural and culinary highlights of the island. IMCI managing director, Ulrich Heinemann (left), spoke at the celebration dinner about the history of IMCI and its rise to become the marine certification body for Belgium. “IMCI’s success is due to a great group of

enthusiastic people and expert work,” he said. Participants included IMCI directors, inspectors and head office staff, and partners and friends. The Board of Directors and Inspectors Meeting took place in the days prior to the celebration when all necessary inspectors’ audits were carried out.

IMCI has updated its existing 12-year-old programme for the Certification of Experts in the boating industry by seeking accreditation from BELAC for quality management certification under EN ISO/IEC 17024:2003. Upon receipt of an application, IMCI reviews the personal and professional qualifications of the expert. After a positive assessment and determination of the expert’s area of interest, he or she can sit an examination (subject areas are fixed and can be viewed on www.imci.org). The exam takes place in Belgium and is computer based with multiple-choice questions. Books and Internet access are allowed as reference aids. Upon successful completion, a certificate is issued. This is valid for five years but

Growth for IMBC...

The 12th annual International Marina & Boatyard Conference (IMBC), held on 29th to 31st January in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, saw a 12% increase in numbers, making it the most successful event in five years. There were over 140 exhibitors and total attendance was around 700. “The numbers this year show that people are enthusiastic about the new content and interactive tools, such as the Marina Design Course we ran with the American Society of Civil Engineers and the visual trends board on the exhibit hall floor,” commented Jeff Rose CMM, chair of IMBC organiser Association of Marina Industries (AMI). “It is also clear to me that the economy is beginning to rebound and that IMBC is the place for continuing education,

meeting with industry suppliers and networking with other marina professionals,” he added. The 2014 event also included new product demonstrations at exhibitor booths. The Marina Design & Engineering breakout track comprised over 25 educational seminars including six hands-on workshops. IMBC returns to Tampa, Florida, in 2015 and will be held 28th to 30th January. The CMM and CMO awards recognise and distinguish the most highly qualified marina managers in the world. IMI’s newest CMMs include Scott Bird of SkipperBud’s Quarterdeck Marina (Sturgeon Bay, WI), Nancy Booth of Hartge Yacht Harbor (Galesville, MD), Matthew Driscoll of Cooper River Marina (North Charleston, SC), Simon Gatrell of Royal Victoria Yacht Club (Victoria, BC), Mark Helman of Conch House Marina (St. Augustine, FL), James McCrink of Miami Dade County Parks & Recreation (Homestead, FL), Tracy McKendry of Shilshole Bay Marina (Seattle, WA) and Brad Wilson of Mears Great Oak Landing (Chestertown, MD). Revamped KYC earns 5 Anchors

Recently upgraded Kinsale Yacht Club (KYC) in the heart of Kinsale town on the beautiful southwest coast of Ireland has been awarded 5 Gold Anchors by The Yacht Harbour Association (TYHA). Large lift orders for Cimolai

Cimolai Technology has recently delivered a 260 ton boat hoist and 100 ton boat transporter to Palmarina Yalikavak in Turkey and a 160 ton hauler and 100 ton transporter to Yatlift Marina in Bodrum.

The machines were tailor-made to the individual requirements of the marinas and handle both sailing and motor boats. The variety of boat sizes at the marinas called for customisation and Cimolai responded by enabling the 100 ton trailers to vary their width, making it possible to transport catamarans. These additions are the latest in a slew of orders for Cimolai, an Italian company that specialises in the design, manufacture and installation of customised lifting and transporting equipment for marinas, ports and shipyards. A 400 ton hauler was destined for another Turkish customer as Marina World went to press. The company is also active in the USA, having recently installed a 320 ton capacity boat hoist in the Riscoli shipyard in Ft Lauderdale, Florida. The hoist includes a special steering system that considerably increases the storage capacities at, and efficiency of, the site. Two further boat lifts have been commissioned for the eastern Caribbean area. The company’s eleventh 820 ton hauler is currently in its final phase and will be delivered to a Greek shipyard soon. Gruissan Marina offers sustainable tour options Gruissan Marina in the south of France is pioneering a new approach to sustainable tourism in the form of “The Odyssea Protect Eco-station”, a tour-guide-cum-electric-car. The concept was unveiled at the Paris Boat Show last December. For tourists arriving by boat who wish to visit the surrounding environs of the marina, Gruissan will provide zeroemission electric cars capable of charging to full capacity in just 30 minutes. We are now working with some very large yachts and motorboats and we fully expect our business in this sector to increase steadily over the next three to five years. Investing in a piece of equipment of this size and value is clearly a significant undertaking, at £170,000, but there is a very real need for increased capacity here and we absolutely must move with the market.” The new investment was

initiated by Universal Marina owner and managing director, Avia Willment. “We are driving the business forward at many levels,” Willment enthused. “This is just one of a chain of carefully planned investments. Others include a new coffee shop facility which opened in spring 2013 and a restaurant and bar is planned for 2014 along with a series of events designed to add value for our berth holders and tenants. We are positioning Universal as a first class, full service facility and we are ready to meet the challenges and enjoy the opportunities that our industry will face over the next five to ten years.” The hoist arrived at the marina in several separate pieces at the start of December 2013 and it took five days to assemble and test the equipment and train the marina operations team. Open ocean anchorage points Poralu Marine subsidiary, Nautiscaphe, has installed a new economical and ecologically friendly ocean yacht mooring system off the protected Cove of Corton in the Bay of Cassis, France.

Lighter, stronger fingers Green Bay Systems, together with Swedish company Compositteknik Norr, has developed a unique finger pontoon system using composite materials that it claims are lighter and stronger than aluminium. The system is suitable for sports and leisure boats up to 30 feet on lakes and in shallow waters. CEO Odd Christian Sandengen conceived the idea in response to the industry’s need for an aesthetically pleasing but functional finger pontoon that was not susceptible to fouling and rust in the ocean environment. Green Bay Systems was founded in 2010 in Norway with the aim of developing a system that was safe, stable and easy to handle and install. The docking system, manufactured using the same technology as glass fibre boats, is designed to withstand harsh, icy conditions. The floater can be filled with environmentally-friendly foam in order to prevent cracks and damage caused by rough handling or accidents. To avoid rust problems on steel when exposed to sun and salt, all hinges and pulleys are made from stainless steel 316L or equivalents. The materials used also prevent the sound of steel scraping against steel when the boat is docked.

As safety is a priority for many marina owners, the system has a telescopic ladder at the end of each finger to ensure peace of mind in case of a slipping accident. Green Bay fingers are also equipped with an anti-skid deck and an optional box at the top for safety equipment and a rope. Constructed from locally sourced, environmentally friendly materials by Compositteknik Norr AB, which manufactures and markets the product in Scandinavia, the system is easy to install and eliminates the need to “waste time on heavy lifting and unnecessary maintenance and repairs.” The industrial version of the product was launched last autumn, with sales expected to begin in the 2014 season. Green Bay is seeking international partners with experience in boat building or other composite products and is open to discussing marketing and business possibilities. The contract was awarded in response to a call for tenders for yacht mooring on screw anchors initiated by the residents of the town of Cassis when they realised their protected ecosystem was in danger from a high concentration of boats. Nautiscaphe, a specialist in environmentally safe anchorage systems, won the tender as it had previously installed its patented underwater anchorage system, the Ellipse, for ecological mooring - albeit not in the open ocean. Despite its lack of experience in ocean mooring, the company successfully installed two anchorage points, at 8.60m and 16.60m respectively from the seabed, to accommodate 24m boats weighing approximately 55 tons. Nautiscaphe’s ‘ocean yachting anchorage’ is designed to moor a single craft. A hot galvanised steel structure, consisting of several of its interlinked ‘Ellipses’ is screwed vertically to the seabed. The mooring line consists of elastic fender, rope and a chain kept under permanent tension in deep water by a sub-surface buoy, which takes up the weight of the line to eliminate contact with the seabed. On the surface, a large buoy, known as the ‘mooring post’, serves as a mooring point for the boat and also compensates for traction stresses by providing resistance when there is movement in the water. Solar energy lamps on the surface of the mooring posts guide users at night. Hydrosphere turns hazard lighting on its head Hydrosphere, a leading supplier of aids to navigation in the UK and Ireland, has launched the Vega VLB-67 LED obstacle and bridge marking light that shines down upon hazards. The light – available in IALA recommended colours red, green, white, yellow and blue – is an extension of its existing Vega LED beacon range but was designed specifically for use in applications where a beacon mounted upside down would be more useful in marking hazards.

A professional practising Chartered Surveyor, Bettesworth became the first European Certified Marina Manager (CMM) in 1995 and has extensive experience in both marina operations and waterside development throughout Europe. He served on the Board of the Association of Marina Industries (AMI) and International Marina Institute (IMI) for eight years, has taught at numerous marina management courses in the UK and Europe and taken part in many marina conferences around the world as an accomplished and knowledgeable speaker.
