Muthambi happy about service delivery in Willow NOMPENDULO NGUBANE

>>nompendulo.ngubane@myecho.co.za

M

INISTER for Communications, Faith Muthambi, said she is happy with the progress of service delivery in the Willowfontain area. Muthambi was tasked by President Jacob Zuma to visit the area and check if the identified challenges by the people of Willowfontain during the presidential Imbizo in September are being addressed by the deployed departments. Some of the challenges were houses in the area of Tomu, roads in a bad condition and five families whose members had no ID’s, birth certificates or government grant. People of Willowfontain gathered at the Willowfontain community hall on Friday to listen to the minister’s feedback, and reacted to what had been done so far. Ward councillor Sibusiso Mkhize said half of the challenges were done, and some of the roads will be under construction next month. A contractor has been given a tender to start with four roads in the Tomu area this coming month, he said. “The five families that had a problem with the necessary documents such as ID’s, certificates and the grant have been attended to. The only thing that is left is the completion of the process, but they have been assisted. “The house issue in Tomu area was also a problem that was raised by the residents of the area. That again will be attended to once we

Betty Gasa from Imbali Unit 18 said that she stopped paying her water bill after Msunduzi mayor Chris Ndlela visited her community last year August and apparently made promises of writing off the water debts of pensioners. “I was always up to date with my rates and water payments and used to pay not more than R500 per month. On 16 August, the mayor visited our community hall and said that pensioners would not have to pay for rates and that, according to the free basic services, pensioners would receive free 60 kilolitres (kl) of water and that outstanding municipal debts for pensioners would be written off. I stopped paying after the mayor told us that we do not have to pay for rates and that we would get free water. “Atthebeginningofthisyear,Ifilledintheindigent forms and submitted them with supporting documents. I was shocked to receive a municipal bill stating that I owed R4747 in rates and water. “My bill has gained an interest of just over R4000,” said Gasa. We need to discussthatandcomeupwithasolutionofwhat can be done to help out. We have to keep them busy, they have to do something other than sit at home,” said Muthambi. to the streets to protest against the lack of service delivery by the Msunduzi Municipality and also to demand free basic services. Some of the tabled grievances were directed towards improper water billing which costs rate payers thousands of rands. The then organizer of the march, Zakhele Hlatshwayo, said that instead of caring for the pensioners, the municipality was destroying people’s lives. “After the march, which was held in January, there were many people from different wards that joined our struggle who are affected by this. “In other instances, the municipality has said that they cannot find the water meters but they still continue to estimate the readings. Since the march, nothing has progressed.” He called for affected residents to meet at Zenzeleni Creche in Imbali Unit J at5pmeveryTuesdayor at Sinamuva Primary School in Imbali at 5pm on Sundays. At the time of print no response hadbeengatheredfrom the municipality.

THE Auditor-General may be a bit lenient on the Msunduzi Municipality come the next audit of the municipality’s financial statements, seeing that they have managed to decrease the number of estimated meter readings to only 1.91% of the total estimated meters. At the recent Municipal Public Accounts Committee (Mpac) meeting, it was revealed that by 9 September this year the estimated readings of meters were at 1.91%. A presentation on meter reading shows that on 17 September last year, there were 8790 electricity meters and 11843 water meters which were estimated. At the time, the total number of estimated meters was 20633 which contributed to 18.2% of the total meters that were estimated. Due to the high percentage of estimated meter readings, and other matters, the AG gave the municipality a qualified report. The recent report for 9 September 2014 shows that the number of estimated electricity meters was, at the time, 748 and with water meters it was 1380. By 9 September, the total number of estimated meters was 2128 which represents only 1.91% of the total estimated meters. “The purpose of the presentation is to provide an update on the work done by the meter reading task team so far. The task team comes from electricity, water, finance, and survey departments. We have come a long way. We have been meeting every Friday morning to discuss the progress and tofindawayforward.Therehasbeenagreat improvement in addressing this issue,” said the process manager for expenditure, Sipho Nxumalo. He said that some of the challenges which still contribute to the estimate of meter readings includes properties and meters which cannot be located, locked properties, unnamed roads and unnumbered houses. Mpac chairperson Mike Tarr said that he wasimpressedthatprogresshadbeenmade to address the issue.

IDDING farewell to 96 students who will soon be on their way to Cuba to study medicine, KZN MEC for Health Dr Sibongiseni Dhlomo thanked them for not contracting HIV. Dhlomo thanked the medical students for having worked hard to pass matric without contracting HIV. “You cannot study in Cuba if you are HIV positive,” he explained. Responding to this, the Treatment Action Campaign’s (TAC) provincial coordinator Mzamo Zondi said they challenged the mandatory HIV testing. “People living with HIV can do every thing but the ruling of other countries really upsets us. This stigmatises people living with HIV. Our wish as TAC is for countriestopartnerupandfindasolution forsuchrulingsincountriessuchasCuba,” he added. ZondialsomentionedthatinSeptem ber they took the South African National

Defence Force (SANDF) to court for discriminating against and redeploying people living with HIV. The 96 trainees are expected to depart at 8am from King Shaka Interna tional Airport this morning, with KZN Premier Senzo Mchunu and Dhlomo bidding them farewell. Dhlomo also urged the medical students to prepare to work hard, to be well behaved and be good ambassadors for South Africa. Their departure will now bring the total number of KZN medical trainees in Cuba to 789. Dhlomo told the trainees they have beengivenauniqueopportunityandthey need to persevere the first three years, because the work load is enormous. “This journey is like running a mara thon. You need to have strong mental ability and tell yourself that the one beside you is equally tired but is still persevering,” he said. By 2019, all these medical students would have returned to the country to

begin ploughing back their muchneeded skills in their own communities. Dhlomo also provided guidance on the do’s and don’ts of life in a foreign country like Cuba. He emphasisd their psychological preparedness, life skills, good behaviour and urged them to avoid drug and alcohol abuse, pregnancy and other activities “leading to misbehaviour”. Lindiwe Ngcobo, mother of student BahlefromEdendale, said:“It’saoncein alifetimeopportunityandweexpecthim to come back to serve his community first,” she said. Yolanda Peterson, mother of a former Haythorne Secondary School pupil, said her daughter Talisa Peterson (20) fell in lovewiththemedicalfieldataveryyoung age. Peterson said the living conditions in Cuba would be very different. “There’ll be no phuthu, but even if they are given rice and eggs to eat, they should appreciate that,” she laughed.

THERE was ululation and jubilation as 100 ICT students under the Dambuza Community Trust (Damcom) graduated at the Edendale Lay Ecunemical centre last Thursday. The trust, which is the brainchild of the Minister of Higher Education Dr Blade Nzimande, was founded in 2007, in a bid

to alleviate poverty through skills empowerment programmes. Speaking at the graduation chairperson of Damcom Mandla Mtheth wa said: “Since Dambuza is a poverty stricken area, Nzimande suggested that we form a community skills centre so that we would also be able to contribute towards the economy of the country. “We discovered that there were a lot of unemployed young people and, through partnerships with SETA and businessmen, we started skills develop ment programmes. “This is the third group to graduate in computer studies since the programme was initiated. We are proud because it is the same number of people graduating who started the programme. “Like a new car, we have given them the basics and it is up to them to

fill up petrol along the way. “With these certificates, they can either continue with their studies at different tertiary institutions or be their own generators of employment.” Guest speaker Msawenkosi encouraged students to volunteer their services in order to find employment. “There is a high unemployment rate and being new in the field, you need to volunteer your services so that people get to know you,” he said. Expressing her excitement, student Mbali Mseleku said: “We are happy to have been given such an opportunity. While unemployment remains rife, it will no longer be the same as we now have basic computer skills. “This year alone we were exposed to a lot of opportunities other than comput ers.”

HREE Towers Communications is offering women from various religious institutions in the province to be part of the Inzwakazi Beauty Pageant next month. Three Towers communications manager Siyabonga Zama said that the aim is to give an opportunity to “God fearing women” to share their beauty across the country. “We have planned this to be an annual event which will take place in all the provinces before the national Inzwakazi Queen at the end of each

year,” he said. Zama said that the word Inzwakazimeansasimple, beautiful woman and that is exactly what the organisers are looking for “We are targeting women from different churches to enter the pageant. We are inviting all churches. We want to move away from the thinking that religious women can’t model or showcase their beauty. We haveembarkedonamissiontomake sure that the churches clearly understand the concept. so that they are not misled,” he said. The pageant will have three sections on the day. “There will be an evening gown category as well as traditional wear

and then casual wear. There won’t be a bikini section. We invite all girls between the ages of 18 and 25 to enter. The entry fee is R200 and the winner will receive R5000 in cash, a beauty and health products hamper from our sponsor Alcare Aloe and a free photo shoot courtesy of 3TC. A third entry-level variant powered by a one-litre engine and priced from R139 990 will be added in 2015. The car’s nose has characteristics from Citroën’s latest models, including a new two-part headlight design with vertical LED headlights. At the rear it has a glass tailgate with square lights. THABO DLADLA TALKING FOOTBALL

Accommodating ideas

T

HE KwaZuluNatal Football Academy signals the decolonisation of the province of the Zulus. This also further crushes the little that was left of South African football philosophy. The sad part is that this time, our people are part of this selling out. It is only in South Africa where foreigners will impose their philosophies on the people.Footballinthisprovincedidnot start with the advent ofdemocracy. Ordinary people, the custodians of the game, have always battled under difficult conditions to develop the game. Initiatives by the locals have never received support, either from the private or public sectors. In the history of the Fifa World Cup, no nation has ev er won the competition with a borrowed playing philosophy. It is a sad indictment on our part that we under mine our culture, values, mentalities and philosophy to accommodate for eign ideas. WearetoldthattheLiverpoolInter national Football School will be bring ing family values to the children of South Africa. What an insult to our fa thers and mothers who strived hard for the present “freedom!” This perpetu ates the idea that Africans are barbari ans. Football coaches in KwaZuluNatal have trained and produced footballers who have gone on to play in the top Eu ropean clubs. We have achieved this with our own training methods and playing philosophies. Senzo Meyiwa the late Orlando Pirates goalkeeper was not produced by Portuguese or English coaches. It is a contradiction and it showslackofrespectforlocalcoaching talent. The message that is sent out to the youth of this province is that only foreign, white football coaches are

good for them. It is a painful reminder of what apartheid has done to the minds of black people in this country. English football is battling with their coaching philosophy. If money was everything, they would be leading world football. Presently, they spend about one million pounds a year on footballacademies.Theproductsfrom these academies lack creativity and ability to be spontaneous. The products from their academies are not good enough to help England win any competition of significance in world football. The KwaZuluNatal Academy, in its present format, will be there to serve the interests of the elite. Poor children from areas like Umlazi, KwaMashu, Chatsworth etc. will continue to battle in dusty fields. Safa has trained many young coaches over the years. Our province finds it easy to bring in foreign coaches while many of our young coaches are unemployed. We live in a country of huge disparities. It is sad that the present administration is not helping to eliminate these disparities. The majority of us have lived and contributed hugely to the human capi tal of this province. We find it insulting to be told by people who arrived yesterday what is good for us. We might be poor and of the wrong skin colour, but we have sur vived over centuries without any sup port from governments and big busi ness. We are the people with history, culture and heroes. We are sick and tired of having for eign heroes pushed down our throats. We have had enough of English, Portu gal and German stories and heroes. When are we going to hear about our own history, stories and heroes? Lastly, KwaZuluNatal football coaches, and South African coaches in general, may not be heroes of those in power in this country. They may not have lots of cash stashed in banks around the world. They still remain the important players in the development of the youth of this country. Failure to recognise their contributions points to wards how we view ourselves as peo ple. We still suffer from an inferiority complex. South Africa’s freedom remains elusive to many of its people. Unzima lo mthwalo!

Ready for Greater Edendale MARITZBURG road runners, and those from surrounding areas, will be out to win the Greater Edendale 10km Race and fun run coming up this weekend. The event, on 16 November, is host ed annually by the Comrades Mara thon Association (CMA) as part of its corporate social investment initiative. The run starts at the FNB Wadley Stadium in Georgetown. “In line with the success of last year’s event, the eighth running of this muchloved race promises to be another funfilled day for the commu nity of Edendale and surrounds,” said the CMA in a press release. The association said that prize money totalling nearly R15 000 is up for grabs, with a generous first prize of R2 500 for the first man and first woman respectively. The first three walkers over the finish line for both the men’s and women’s race will also be rewarded. “Additionally, every finisher will take home a medal and all 10km run ners will receive an Edendale 10km race Tshirt,” said the release. The CMA said local school teachers have shown a heightened sense of optimism for the event, knowing full wellthepowerofsucheventsinuniting communities and promoting civic pride.

In this respect, the schools challenge will be a continued feature of the race in which schools compete with each other. Schools are encouraged to get their pupils to participate in the fun run. The first two schools with the most finish ers will each walk away with a grand prize comprising of digital equipment. “Entry criteria stipulates that po tential participants be at least 15 years old for the 10km race. Temporary licenses will be available at the registration desk at a cost of R10 for those runners who are not licensed members of running clubs. With regard to the 5km fun run, anyone over nine years old may enter. “Special attention is drawn to IAAF Rules 4.2 and 142 for foreign runners, as well as the condition that no personal seconding will be permitted,” said the association. Preentries are currently being tak en at Comrades Marathon House dur ing weekdays between 8am and 4.30pm. The local race organising commit tee will be at the FNB Wadley Stadium taking entries on Saturday, 15 November 2014 from 11am to 2pm. Registration will also be open on the day of the race from 5am to 7am. Supplied.

LAIN, Durban born Bafana Bafana captain Senzo Meyiwa needs to be honoured as a hero, and properly. These were the words of senior national team head coach Ephraim “Shakes” Mashaba when his side landed in Durban on Monday. MashabasaidthattheSouthAfricanFootball Association (Safa) brought the 2014 African Cup of Nations qualifier against Sudan to Durban in order to honour Meyiwa. “This game is not just a normal game, but a veryimportantonetothecountryinmanyways. Our former captain made history by keeping a clean slate when he was a goalie and in charge as a captain. “Our national soccer association, Safa, made history by changing the game from Mpumalanga Province to KZN. Deodorant Meyiwa’s funeral service was held at Moses Mabhida Stadium two weeks ago and on Saturday, we are playing at the same venue. “To us it’s a must win situation. We need to fulfil Senzo 2 FOR Meyiwa’s dream of R qualifying for ACN,” said Mashaba.
