MONTH since the Nhlazatshe Islamic School was shut down by community members, amid allegations of a number ofunresolvedissues, woescontinuetoaffectthe Islamic schools. On Monday, pupils from the Edendale Islamic School had to be sent back home after a group, claiming to be parents at the school, picketed outside the building, demanding the expulsion of principal Ian Khan whom they accuse of autocracy. However Khan said that this was a political ploy to get rid of him, having served the school for 14 years without any complaints. Community members say that after the shutdown of Nhlazatshe Islamic school, Khan, whoisaprincipalatboththeseschools, sentout letters to parents of pupils from Edendale Islamic School informing them that the school was shutting down, without informing the board. However Khan refuted the claims, saying the school was being shut down by a committee from the community. Speaking to Echo, a resident who did not wanttobeidentifiedsaid:“Wedonotknowwho leaked the information but Khan was already aware that we were planning to demand his expulsion, so he made the first move by writing letters to parents saying that the school was shutting down, as community members had threatened to shut it down. “We are totally against disrupting teaching

and learning, especially since it is near exam time. The only person that we want out is him. The school that was shutdown last month can re-open tomorrow, provided that Khan is removed. There is a school board that is supposed to make decisions, but some things are implemented without their knowledge.” Residents said that they approached the principal suggesting the formation of a School Governing Body (SGB), like other schools, but he refused. “There are so many problems at both these schools, however our main problem is autocracy. He does not take kindly to suggestions, and we cannot work with someone like that,” said a concerned parent. Responding to the allegations, Khan said that the school does not have an SGB because it has an open door policy. “Any concerns are dealt with parents directly or through circulars. Community members had approached me about the formation of the SGB but it was people who had no interest in the education of the children and they were asking questions irrelevant to the education of children. The same people were supposed to come back to a follow up meeting about this proposal, but they did not. I have served the schoolforabout14years,anditisonlynowthat they are complaining. “This is a political ploy by people I know who wanttotakeownershipoftheschool.Theyeven mentioned that the school is not registered, when in fact we are registered and in the process of getting accredited by Umalusi.”

Matriculants ready for exams next week Mhlengi Phakathi from Mehlokazulu High School said that he is more than ready for the examinations as from the beginning of the year, he made it a point that he studies at least six subjects a day, excluding life orientation. "We had weekend classes and holiday classes, so we are prepared for the examinations. I am hoping to study for a Bachelor of Science focusing in mathematics."

Phumelele Shange from Northbury Park Secondary School said that she is confident that will do her best. "Teachers have done their part, and it is up to us to reflect on what we have been taught. I am looking forward to studying nursing science next year." she said. Nompumelelo Shange from Northbury Park Secondary School also shared the same sentiments with her twin sister, saying that teachers have worked hard in preparing them for the examinations, and it is up to them to put what they have been taught into heart and practise. She hopes to study law next year

Zamokuhle Hadebe from Zibukezulu Technical High School said he is ready for his first examination starting on 27 October. "Our teachers did everything they could to prepare us for these examinations, as we had extra classes during holidays and weekends. I am hoping to pass so that I can study civil engineering next year. Those who have not started studying should do so, as this is the last opportunity to show what they have learnt over the years."

tal that have been declared disaster areas after having been hit by severe droughts. The KZN Department of Co-operative Governance and Traditional Affairs (Cogta) has welcomed the decision by the provincial cabinet to accept its recommendations to declare disaster areas in all regions of the province affected by the drought. “The effects of droughts are now treated as an emergency, with all our capacity being placed at the disposal of the affected regions. The declaration of disaster areas also opens the way for

Her main focus is developing teachers from rural areas in the ICT sector. “My passion is to influence a broader community of teachers who in return, will contribute to the quality of education in South Africa. The digital divide is an enormous elephant which requires working together to conquer the needs of underprivileged communities. “There are also interventions and initiatives in progress to empower and inspire women to participate in the IT industry in our country.” Advising aspiring teachers, Mfeka said that being a teacher means to be a selfless adaptive life-long learner, who influences his or her environment. “Teaching provides a privilege of shaping the future of the country by modelling a way of life that pupils can emulate. This is a privilege unique to teaching and should be taken seriously at all times”. Speaking to teachers as they celebrate their month, she said that teaching is a calling and there is no money that will ever be enough to pay for what a teacher does.

HILE the coun try celebrated World Teachers’ Day on 5 October, NOKULUNGA NGOBESE spoke to a teacher from Imbali who has made great strides in the Information and Communications Technology (ICT) sector. Having started her teaching career in 1997, Hlengiwe Mfeka realised that there were several challenges faced by pupils from underresourced schools. Withthesupportofher husbandKhulekani, she was encouraged to enrol for a Further DiplomainEducationspecializingincomputer literacy. She then introduced Computer Application Technology (CAT) as a subject at Mconjwana High School, which led to the establishment of a fully fledged computer laboratory at the school. In 2009, she won the Microsoft Innovative Teacher Award. Having taught for 11 years, shejoinedSchoolNetSAin2010andiscurrently the project manager for ICT for the Rural Education Development Project.

additional assistance and funding for KZN from the national government,” said KZN MEC for Cogta Nomusa Dube-Ncube in a press release on Friday. The other regions most affected by drought and declared disaster areas are uMkhanyakude, uThungulu, Ilembe, Zululand, Harry Gwala, uMzinyathi and uThukela. All of them have received rainfall well below normal and this has affected water levels in various catchments. “Our preliminary assessment of damagestotheprovince,especiallytolive-

stock and crops, currently stands at R400-million, but this is by no means the final tally as our assessment teams continue to take stock of the water crisis on the ground,” said Dube-Ncube. As an interim solution, municipalities are supplying water tankers and Jojo tanks throughout the affected regions, however this is putting additional pressure on the province’s resources as these services now have to be extended to areas which, under normal circumstances, will have sufficient water supplies. Drought is linked to climate change

and it is a force of nature. It has been of concern to government that some communities have responded to water shortages with service delivery protests. “We plead with communities to understand the natural phenomenon of the drought disaster we are faced with and ask of them to play their part by conservingthelittlewaterthatisstillbeing provided to enable us to continue with our day-to-day businesses,” continued Dube-Ncube. -Supplied

SUCCESS STORY

My name is Priya (43 years), from Howick, Pietermaritzburg. From the bottom of my heart I thank Mr Baka for saving my marriage. My husband of 12 years had been taken away from me by another woman. After moving from one herbalist to another without any success, a colleague at work told me about Mr Baka. I went there and within three days my husband came back, using water and a mirror, Baka also showed me all my enemies. I have no other way to thank this man, only to tell the whole world about him. He can also boost business, chase bad spells and tokoloshe, unfinished jobs, quick sale of property, illness, lucky oil to win at the casino and many more.
