Name change for Edendale Hospital?

>> The YCLSA’s recent visit prompted the suggestion NOMPENDULO NGUBANE

A

S the country patiently waits for the National Health Insurance (NHI) to be officially granted and begin operating in government health institutions, the Young Communist League of South Africa (YCLSA) of the Harry Gwala Region wants Edendale Hospital’s name changed to Harry Gwala Memorial Hospital. This was revealed two weeks ago when the YCLSA made a surprise visit to Edendale hospital to check if there is some improvement in terms of how the hospital is operating. They visited different departments of the hospital, checking if patients were being treated well. Some of the things they looked at were the queues, security and cleanliness. The Harry Gwala Region YCLSA deputy secretary Njabulo Mtolo said their call for the hospital name change is prompted by the role that Gwala played in the midlands while he was

still alive. He said they see Edendale Hospital as one of the institutions that would carry the late struggle icons name for eternity. “Gwala was called the “Lion of the Midlands”forareason.Hewasgiventhatname because he deserved it and played a big role in the country as a whole. Gwala was once employed at Edendale hospital. He was dismissed after the hospital authorities discovered that he was recruiting hospital employees to join the South African Council of Trade Unions (SACTU). “He played a big role in the South African struggle and we believe that naming the hospital after him would be history that will last forever and it will pass on from generation to generation,” said Mtolo. Gwala, known as Munt’omdala, was born in Pietermaritzburg in 1920. He was a teacher and a member of SACTU and the African National Congress (ANC). He grew up in the Pietermaritzburgareaandaftercompletinghis teacher s diploma, he taught at Slangspruit.

EING born into a family with financial struggles did not stop Nonkululeko Williams (24) looking at life in a positive way and pursuing her dreams through thick and thin. Speaking about her journey, Williams said that at the age of eight, she was taken in to SOS by her grand mother who couldn’t raise her on her own. Williams now lives in Johannesburgwheresheworks full time as an office administrator, modeling and acting part time and also pushing her wedding and party/events planner business. “As part of the SOS system, once you have completed your studies at SOS you are then integrated. This does not mean that you are no longer a child of SOS, but financially, you are on your own. They financially assist you for six months, whilst youarelookingforajob, thenafterthatyou on your own. “This is done to allow another child to get the same opportunities you got at the

Village. I then decided to move to Johannesburg, but things were not happening as fast as I wanted them to. “I am still involved in modeling. I take part in pageants and “Face search” competitions. I partake in events that take place on weekends because during the week, I work 8 to 5,” said Williams. She said that she had the privilege to meet her family at the age of 18 in 2008. “My grandma was sickly during the year I met her but when she saw me, she got up from her sick bed and just held me in her arms so tight and shed many tears. The happy ending was short lived as my grand ma passed away a year later, a memory that will stay in my heart forever. Things to know about Williams •She represented SA in the Applause Rising Talent Search (ARTS) in Florida in 2008 •She is under the Just You Artist and Model Agency •Her slogan for her business is “With a touch of gold” •Her business was registered five months ago •Her first wedding to plan was last month in Durban. .

VOX POP Should Numsa be separated from Cosatu? FOLLOWING a series of problems and consultations, the Congress of South African Trade Unions (Cosatu) last week cut ties with the National Union of Metalworkers (Numsa). NOKULUNGA NGOBESE spoke to city residents to find out how they feel about this decision. As it stands, Cosatu has given Numsa 30 days to appeal against its expulsion.

Mammie Zondi "Right now, both these unions are looking at their own interests and have forgotten the interests of the workers. This separation will give them time to look back on what is important. On the other side, it is wrong as their separation was not the view of the whole membership. This decision is going to promote factional ism and division and will kill the relevance of the tri partite alliance.

Busisiwe Mbokazi “The divorce came at the right time as both unions need to go back to the drawing board and reassess themselves. They need to reassess whether they are still fighting for workers' rights or if it is about power struggles. The divorce will allow both these unions to reflect on what they are really about."

Receiving the punching bag donation from Poobie Naidoo Sports Warehouse are (from left) City of Choice Olympics Style Boxing Association chairman Thulani Gabela, Sabelo Mkhize, Vincent Majola (Poobie Naidoo Sports Warehouse representaytive) and noMdu Mchunu (secretary).

Poobie Naidoo donates to Edendale boxing club

M

ANY years ago, the Edendale area, especially around Georgetown, was known to be a hub of sport. The old, popular Edendale YMCA was the centre stage for everybody interested in dance sport, boxing, karate, table tennis and body building. A couple of quality boxers such as the late Joe “Axe Killer” Ngidi, Negro Zulu and the greatest in karate ever produced by Edendale, Matululu Nene and Sy Ntanzi, are some of the household names that were produced by the centre. Nowadays, it is heartbreaking to see the trademark Edendale sport and youth development building, the YMCA, falling apart, gym equipment missing and boxers no longer accommodated. The Edendale based boxing club known as the City of Choice Olympics Style Boxing Association, affiliated to the Msunduzi Boxing Association, is currently using one room at Wadley Stadium that was previously used to keep equipment and tools. According to the organisation’s chairman, ThulaniGabela, thelocalpoliticstookthemout of the YMCA. “Nobody can actually give you a good reason as to why boxers or other sport codes are no longer accommodated at the old EdendaleYMCA.TheonlythingIcansayisthat differences, or local petty politics, took us out,” said Gabela. Although there are a lot of issues that make boxers around Edendale unhappy, local businessman and owner of Poobie Sports Warehouse, Poobie Naidoo, brought a bit of support and happiness when he donated a punch bag and skipping rope recently. “We are very grateful to Naidoo. This will help us a lot in training and producing future champions,” said Gabela. Naidoo told Echo that he will always help wherever possible, adding that it must be understood that keeping children in sport takes them away from crime or drugs. “If you promote sport in you area and keep our communities playing, it means we are creating future stars. This is also our small way of improving lives and giving back to our communities around the city,” said Naidoo. -Jerry Barnes.

THE Greater Edendale community came out in droves to celebrate their athletic talent at a packed FNB Wadley Stadium in Georgetown, Edendale. In line with its corporate social responsibility programme, the Comrades Marathon Association (CMA) hosted the Greater Edendale 10km Race and Fun Run on Sunday. The eighth edition of this muchloved annual event saw a record turnout by the community in terms of participation and support. Prize money totalling nearly R15 000 was presented to the winners in various categories. Siyabonga Mkonde took the first prize of R2500 for the first man and Lingo Chara claimed the same amount for the first woman position. Every finisher took home a medal in addition to all 10km runners receiving an Edendale 10km Race Tshirt. The Schools Challenge awards went to Esigodini Primary and Swanzwili Primary Schools.

Saturday night, Maritzburg United, will be treated with respect. “It’s going to be a tough one because I I have got a lot of respect for Komphela and the entire team,” said De Sa.
