IDESPREAD electricity connections in Swapo and Copesville have claimed yet another life, after one young boy was electrocuted to death two weeks ago. The boy, who is unknown, and has not yet been identified by his family, is believed to be from Swapo and was discovered on 30 March. It is alleged that he was in the company of other young boys who were crossing the road, when he tripped and fell over a live wire. He was found lying dead near a street pole in Copesville. Mbongeni Nodada, a resident at Copesville, said that young boys from Swapo, Hanniville, Ezinketheni and surrounding informal settlements often walk to Copesville, looking for tins or copper that they can sell for recycling at a nearby scrap yard. “They usually get about R3 for selling the scraps. They look for them everywhere, even in the bushes where these live wires are often hidden,” he said. According to residents, this is not the first person to be killed by illegal electricity connections since the year started. Last year, Echo reported about a six-year-

old child from Pakkies informal settlement near Copesville who was electrocuted after being shocked by a fence outside her neighbour’s house. Attempts to get comment from ward councillor Thandi Ndlovu were unsuccessful, as she put down the phone immediately after hearing that the call was from Echo. SAPS spokesperson Captain Thulani Zwane confirmed that a young boy, who was not identified, was allegedly electrocuted by exposed electricity wires next to street lights in Copesville. “Police are investigating the circumstances around the incident.” Anyone who is able to assist in identifying the body is urged to contact Detective Warrant Officers Daryl Gounder at 079 804 2100 or Glen Bruce at 082 823 9860. “The Mountain Rise police are faced with a serious problem with regards to illegal electricity connections in the informal settlements. “These illegal connections have resulted in seven deaths since July last year. This also causes a great hindrance in police performing visible policing and investigation duties in the informal settlements,” said Zwane.

Basic Education Minister Angie Motshekga on Tuesday donated uniforms to needy pupils of Sinamuva and Fezokuhle Primary Schools. Speaking at the schools, she said: "Since I was in the city, I decided to visit a few schools as part of my work. We are donating uniforms to primary schools because we want to highlight the important of primary education. Foundation phase has become quite critical, and that is why we want to extend primary schooling years.” She is pictured with Sinamuva pupils.

Pastor on a mission to heal troubled souls >> Often when people succeed in life, they forget the people who have contributed to where they are >>nokulungan@myecho.co.za

EING abandoned by his mother at just six monthsoldandhavingapainfulupbringing has propelled Pastor Trevor Phoswa to heal troubled souls with his motivational talks. He recently released a motivational album titled “Iphambili liyakubuza”. NOKULUNGA NGOBESE spoke to him. Born n the deep rural area of KwaSwayimane 35 years ago, the founder of God’s Victory Family Church was forced to live with relatives in Bulwer after his mother left him with them at only six months old as she had found a job. After that, she did not bother looking for him, and when she was finally traced at her new place

Poswa. He said that he would often visit different churches, and finally accepted his calling into the ministry in 2006. “I wanted to use my pain to heal people and torestorehopethatthereisabettertomorrow. My motivational album with nine tracks talks about different societal issues. It encourages those who have succeeded not to forget where they come from. Often when we succeed in life, we forget thepeoplewhohavecontributedtowhereweare. We forget that when we fall, we will need the same people to be there for us. “The other track talks about the loss of humanity. Our grandmothers are raped day and night. Where is our humanity? We are heading to wards national elections, politicians are campaigning left right and centre with false promises. When they have won, they forget about the people who brought them to where they are. Where is the humanity in that?”, he said. Phoswa said that through his motivational talks, he wants to restore hope, humanity and to encourage people not to give up on their dreams. The married father of one loves going out with his family. He plans on releasing another motiva Switches and Globe tional talk album soon. Holders

of employment, she said the relatives must keep him. “I grew up in a poverty stricken household. My aunt already had nine children to take care of. We struggled to make ends meet and we relied on herding people’s cattle so that we would get milk. “At times we would not get payment, despite having done the job. I did my lower grades there and seeing that the situation was becoming worse, I went back to Swayimane. “The situation was even worse that side and I had to move to KwaMachibisa. I did my senior primary at Mthethomusha and completed matric at Bongudunga High School. Struggling as I was, I would often go to church as I had faith that something better was in store for me,” said

RODUCTION came to a halt at a napkin factory in Eastwood on Monday, after the owner was arrested at work, allegedly for raping a female employee. The woman from Tamboville, who had just started working at the factory last week, was allegedly raped by Mikiele Kanza Araja from Pakistan at work on Saturday. Speaking to Echo, the woman who cannot be identified said: “I came to the factory last week Tuesday looking for a cleaning job after someone had told me that there was a vacant post. From the first day I started working, the owner, who is a foreign national, followed me around. He did not want me to be in the company of other employees at the factory. On Thursday he started touching my breasts and forced me to perform oral sex on him. “When I reported what he was doing to other female employees, they said that he has done the same to some of them, with the

promise of giving them money and higher positions at work.” She said that when she came to work on Saturday, her employer asked her to sweep his office and forced her to sleep with him, so that she would keep her job. She said: “I have since opened a case of rape against him and I want him to rot in jail. I am speaking on behalf of all the other women who are afraid to speak out because they fear being victimised or losing their jobs.” SAPS spokesperson Captain Thulani Zwane confirmed that a 36-year old man was arrested for rape. He appeared in court on Tuesday and was released on warning to come back again on 15 May,

Panorama commuters angered at lack of taxis over the school holidays

RESTING half of the Eastwood/Pano rama taxi assiciation’s fleet during the school holidays has caused delays for commuters. Angry commuters told Echo that since last year when school holidays come around, the number of taxis are reduced, causing them to be late for work. One commuter, who did not want

to be identified, said that last Monday morning, together with three other commuters, they had to collect money for a meter taxi since they were going to be late for work. “Taxi owners do not communicate with us about the changes and we only hear from drivers that a decision was taken to reduce the number of taxis during school holidays. In the mornings we wait them for hours, and it is worse intheeveningsasthequeuesatthetaxi ranks are too long. We are even thinking

of approaching the Department of Transport to find out if there is a way that we can get at least one bus, which we can use as an alternative means of transport. “Every school holiday is the same and although we have complained, nothing has been done.” Another commuter said: “It does not mean that just because schools are closed, everyone is on holiday. They always hide by saying that they call community meetings, meanwhile they

call them at the Eastwood community hall. “Whataboutthoseofuswhodonot have transport or money to take taxis to attend these meetings?” she asked. When contacted for comment, Eastwood/Panorama Taxi Association Ronnie Jacobs refused to comment, saying that he does not understand why commuters would complain to a newspaper instead of coming to him.

T

HE determination to improve the lives of people in the KwaNgubeni area in Inadi has resulted in the formation of a youth organisation called Zamimpilo youth services (ZYS). The group, based in Ward 5, is determined to improve people’s lives. During the official launch of the organisation last Thursay, ZYS chairman Sabelo Mhlokwa told Echo that idling and loitering around of community members was a thing of the past with the introduction of this organisation. Mhlokwa said that although most of the people in the area are unemployed or not sufficiently educated, it does not mean that they must waste their lives by just sitting around. “The main problem in this area is unemployment, lack of youth activities like sports, cultural events or anything that will keep them off the streets. “Our aim as members of ZYS and the community of this area is to invite all government departments to come and teach us life skills like sewing, agriculture, care giving, HIV/Aids counselling and IT,” said Mhlokwa. He said the majority of the youth, and even senior members of the community, spend their days sitting around the local shops and often end up taking drugs. “We already started an ongoing program with Correctional Services, SAPS and the Gift of The Givers in uplifting our community.” ZYS is currently operating from the local creche in KwaNgubeni, and are looking for their own office space with a fax machine and at least one computer for a start. “We are appealing to good people out there, especially our local business people, to at least help us with a container, office equipment or anything to start our own office,” said Mhlokwa. Mhlokwa can be contacted at 072 4029 743. – Jerry Barnes

Higher Education Minister Dr. Blade Nzimande launched the FET Graduate Placement pro gramme at FET Plessislaer campus last Friday.

H

IGHER Education Minister Dr Blade Nzimande has warned employers to desist from making graduates make tea and coffee or sending them to make photocopy documents. Nzimande was speaking at the launch of the Further Education and Training (FET) Graduate Placement programme at FET at the Plessislaer FET campus last Friday. Nzimande urged institutions and companies at all levels to work together with the FET colleges to improve training and skills. Elaborating on the programme, he said the aim is to expand FET colleges and give them the same recognition and dignity that other institutions enjoy. PuttingmorepressureontheFETprincipals to improve their working strategy is one of the priorities mentioned by Nzimande. “We want to sign a work place strategy agreement with all the FET principals, our colleges are not glorified high schools. We want to see a relationship between other institutions and the FETs,” he said. A student with an N6 electrical engineering should be able to upgrade at Durban University

108 Retief Street Pietermaritzburg 3201

of Technology (DUT) without having to start from scratch. “What our government is doing, is implementing a slogan where every workplace should be a training space. “I always ask myself, what role is played by employers if they always complain that we produce graduates that are not up to standard. “They must stop sending the students to make tea,” said Nzimande. As part of expanding FET colleges Nzimande said that more campuses will be opened this year. The UMfolozi, Nkandla, UMkhanyakude and KwaMbonambi areas are where FET campuses will be opened in the province this year. “We are urging small and big companies to join hands with us. Our children should not stay at home because they don’t have a university qualification. “We want all the FETs to have Sector Education and Training Authority (Seta) offices. They already exist in some of the colleges and there is a good working relationship,” he said. Nzimande also took the opportunity to encourage young people to go out and vote in the general elections that are coming up on 7 May.

SIMPHIWE MKHIZE SIMPHIWE MKHIZE

S

CRIPTWRITNG guru, Mthuthuzeli Matshoba, tells us that Act 3 of a script is about the road back to normality. In the story of the Lord Jesus Christ we find that after his death, things are working themselves towards normality. Of course at this point he is back with his father in Heaven. At this critical point of his absence, we again witness his presence and we are in awe. But according to scripting theories, even the road to normality is not easy to solve. The road back is not easy because bad characters don’t die easily. In the case of our Lord Jesus’s story, we find that his followers are being hunted down and killed. They are persecuted and imprisoned. One of the key anti-Christ people is none other than Saul.

Our Christ is the real main character and superhero Saul is busy destroying the church of God. Saul is described as a thinker, a cultural puritan and a staunch defender of his Jewish way of thinking and doing things culturally. Hence, he is on a mission to get rid of the followers of Christ because they defy convention and they change established cultural practices which the Jewish people are accustomed to. We see how the Jewish elite mock Christ’s disciples before he gets killed, accusing them of not washing their hands before they eat. And to that Christ hits back and suggests that the physical or material things are not important, but what is in the heart is. It is not important what you put into your mouth, but what comes out of your mouth is. Christ argues that this is because out of your mouth comes harsh words, jealousy, greed, lust and the like. Obviously, we know that at this stage that Christianity is still a long way from being firmly established as a dominant religion and way of life on the Earth. In the interest of expediency, Jesus, in the form of the Holy Spirit, is quick to appoint Saul, the antiChristian Jewish crusader, and he re-names him as Paul. This apostle goes through much suffering and subsequent persecution as he establishes the church of

Christ all over the world. Paul is specifically assigned by the Lord Jesus to deal with the ruling class – the Gentiles – whom the Jewish elite perceived as uncultured and dirty. And this marks the height of Christ’s mission – to spread Christianity all over the world. All the colonising powers, particularly the Romans, the British, and the Americans, in particular, embrace and promote Christianity as a dominant religion and this does not happen by accident. Modernity and Christianity go hand in hand. In most countries, the Christian Bible has facilitated elementary education and modern health services amongst the colonised and the illiterate. It is not an accident that Christian missionaries teach people to read and write so that they can be able to read the Christian Bible and spread the word of God in accordance with Christ’s mission. The fact that Christian missionaries get entangled with the political agenda of the elite does not take away the supreme purpose of Christ to reach all – the good and the bad. Christian leaders are credited as having fought against slavery in Europe and also stood with the people during the struggle against apartheid in South Africa. The very same Gentiles that endorsed his death, even if they did not see anything wrong with him,

are now his keen promoters and indeed, he has used them to reach His Father’s people in all the corners of the world. Matshoba told us that the end of the script is actually when danger is over – this is the time to celebrate – the main character is a conqueror, a winner, he or she gets a promotion, a medal, praise, recognition and morality prevails or there is a return to normality. In the case of the Lord Jesus Christ’s story, you and I can look back and say our Christ is a real main character and superhero! He is dominating the world and his church is increasing everyday – even when one church breaks away and another one is formed, we see our Christ being the winner because numbers keep swelling and more and more people join his mission or become Christians. Our superhero, friend, teacher, master, coach and God personified, sees the church as a meeting point for his followers to learn. But he is more interested in the inner church that is found in each and every man and woman – the heart. He wants to change hearts, make them purer and less prone to negativity. Our hero is the starring and winner! Today, even television channels are dominated by Christianity, and it boasts its own channels that reach many old and new Christ believers all over the world.

The message of this story is clear. Christ wants us to love and honour his father in Heaven in accordance with the ten commandments of Moses. He wants us to recognise, respect, acknowledge and obey God’s teachings and standards. And that includes loving God and his creatures, serving parents, family and society, obedience, respect, good conduct, absence of promiscuity and adultery, absence of theft, defying jealousy, and Christ expects us to love and protect others. Our main character has won many battles, but the war is still on. Even established Christians still battle with many human weaknesses, like jealousy, greed and adultery. But the superhero is working on them through the churches of the world, and writers, journalists, publishers, TV producers, social media platforms and the word of mouth. Preparations for His second coming are afoot. And that might constitute part two of the script when Jesus Christ comes back to claim his own and end the Earthly drama. Of course that would mark the end of the drama of dramas because there would be no more drama on Earth. And this we do not know when it will happen.

THE FACT THAT CHRISTIAN MISSIONARIES GET ENTANGLED WITH THE POLITICAL AGENDA OF THE ELITE DOES NOT TAKE AWAY THE SUPREME PURPOSE OF CHRIST TO REACH ALL – THE GOOD AND THE BAD.

Local jazz legend Khanyile ploughs back

April 10, 2014

maritzburg

ECHO

PIETERMARITZBURGBORN jazz singer, song arranger and writer, Sifiso Khanyile, has been roped in to lend a hand in local talent development and mentoring through the Msunduzi School of Music. Khanyile is a recording artist who has worked on numerous projects with South African accomplished musicians such as Sibongile Khumalo, Mthunzi Namba, Judith Sephuma, Simphiwe Dana, Nqube ko Mbatha, to name a few. His debut album titled “Music is every

where” is out now. Khanyile recently initiated a workshop that was held at the Msunduzi school of Music. The workshop focused on available opportunities in the music industry and streams that can generate income, differ entroleplayersinthestudioorinliveshows and their responsibilities, songwriting and how artists can ensure that their work is protected. “This project aims to reduce the number of illiterate musicians and provide a solid musical background to those who want to further their studies in tertiary institutions,” he said in a press release.

The Msunduzi school of music has made a profound difference in terms of teaching hundreds of youth how to read and write music and play various instru ments, and has built a strong reputation for quality education, thus attracting students from near and far. “I am honoured to assist and share my skills with the community of PMB. There isnobetterwayofgivingbacktomypeople than this”. enthuses Khanyile. Born in Mbali township, Khanyile comes from a highly musical family and attributes his love of music to many moments spent singing with his mother.

“The sounds that I heard when I was growing up have been the biggest inspira tionformyalbum, thatwouldbethesweet and soft voices of my mother and my sister’s singing to chants and traditional musiconewouldhearatfamilygatherings. More workshops will be held in the near future as Khanyile’s wish is to give back to the community through empowering young artists in the music industry. For more information on his debut album and bookings you can visit: www.si fisokhanyile.co.za and for bookings and in quries, email busi@sevethlevel.co.za or phone 011 487 2671.

Maya is heartbroken when she witnesses a private moment between Rick and Caroline. Taylor and Brooke don’t mince words as they exchange damning accu sations about each oth er’s personal lives. BAFANA’S new kid on the block B

AFANA Bafana coach Gordon Igesund on Tuesday proved to the country that his aim is to keep revealing new talent to build for the future. Whennaminghissquadfortheirupcomingfriendly matches against Australia and New Zealand, Igesund included the Mpumalanga Black Aces player Themba Zwane for the first time. “As I said from day one, my doors are always open and I will always give everybody that deserves to be there a chance. “ We need new young blood for the future. The future of this national team belongs to the youngsters and our young players are our future,” said Igesund. AmaZayoni coach Clive Barker has been calling for the midfielder to get a shot after some outstanding performances for Aces this season, and it seems that Igesund has been listening. Barker openly praised Igesund for his open door policy and urged Zwane to use the opportunity. “May be we should learn to praise our national coach for looking to everybody without saying your team is too small or it’s not coming from Gauteng or Cape Town. “I personally sat with Zwane for him to grab this opportunity with both hands and stay focused in his game because this boy is going places,” said Barker. This time around, Igesund will be without Dean Furman, Darren Keet and Daylon Claasen for the encounters as they are unavailable, with the squad boasting an average age of 24. The SA’s senior men’s team will take on Australia

Zola Budd with members of Hooters Running club. ONE of the best athletes that South Africa has ever produced, Zola Budd, will participate in the Comrades Marathon in the colours of the newly formed Hooters Running club. “I will be running for my international and South African sponsor, Hooters, in the upcoming Comrades Marathon” confirmed Budd speaking from the group’s headquarters in Umhlanga recently. Budd, famous for running barefoot, burst on to the world stage when she broke the world 5000m record in 1984. This was not the only record she broke that day – at the tender age of 17 she was the youngest ever to hold the record. The waif-like runner from Bloemfontein was later denied the record as it had been set in South Africa which was banned by the International Amateur Athletic Federation (IAAF) because of the apartheid system. She went on to break the record again on English soil a short while later. The naïve athlete “suddenly found herself intheeyeofapoliticalhurricanebeingbattered by politicians who tried to stop her competing,” said Ray de Vries spokesman for the Hooters Runners club. The storm continued for Budd who, after gaining a British passport, was able to compete

in the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics where she collided with 3000m race favourite, American Mary (Decker) Slaney who, as a result of the collision, was forced out of the race. Despite the effects of 100 000 American spectators booing her, Budd came back to win the World Cross Country championships in 1985 and then again in 1986. “I am very excited to get back home and run on South African soil over the next month or two. I will be back in South Africa next week for my final preparations for the Two Oceans marathon on Easter weekend, which is part of my Comrades build up. Budd made her Comrades Marathon debut in 2012 and missed a silver medal by 35 minutes finishing in a time of 8:05. “My aim was to finish the race in one piece in about eight hours which I did. There was a lot of pressure for me to break 7 hours 30 minutes to earn a silver medal, but I am glad that I took Bruce Fordyce’s advice and ran a conservative race. It was very tough and I said I would never ever do it again, but here I am, excited to run again!” said Budd. Budd was to race the up run last year, but fell sick with flu and was advised by doctors to withdraw from the race. - Supplied
