CLEAN-UP campaign is to be launched by the Msunduzi Municipality to ensure that the city is clean and that citizensgeteducatedontheimportance of cleanliness. The plan was announced by Mayor Chris Ndlela during his State of the City Address at the Royal Showgrounds last Monday, saying it will be launched on Mandela Day, 18 July, to educate its citizens about their responsibility

of living in a clean environment. “Part being a world-class city entails being a clean and tidy city, one that we pride ourselves on regardless of which part of town you are travelling through,” explained Ndlela. “We have to change our attitude, our space belongs to all.” He said the campaign will encourage people to clean their space for one hour every week. “The time of only taking and doing nothing is over. This is the opportunity to do something by giving and not only taking.”

He pointed out that the city is always in a palatable state between 8 pm and 6 am after the streets have been cleaned by municipal workers. He alluded to the fact that the peoplewhoenterthecityeveryday should make it their responsibility not to litter and to leave it in the healthy state they find it in. He urged that the call made by President Jacob Zuma recently to “roll up our sleeves and take matters into our own hands by taking the time to clean our towns and cities — all in the name of the

one man who sacrificed so much for all of us as a country”. “With 18 July only two weeks away, and with this being the first birthday we will be celebrating in the absence of the father of our nation, former president Nelson Mandela, this is a fitting gift we can give to the late statesman.” Ndlela also vowed to remove street children from the lane between Upper Crust and Jonathan’s Spar. Ndlela’s speech will be debated in council on 23 July after councillors have returned from recess.

Shepstone, from the greater Durban area through the Midlands and up into the north ern interior. Debbie Schroeder, who founded and runs the organisation, said the operation has been brought to a standstill after the compu ter crash. “Everything is on it. They are work ing to recover information from the hard drive, but we need a computer to transfer onto in order to operate.” God’s Warehouse relies solely on dona tions. A highly active social media presence has helped with this, but it does not have funds to replace the laptop. “Every cent we raise goes to feeding and helping our moms,” said Schroeder. The 2011 South African census found that nationally,3.7%ofSouthAfricanchildrenlive with their fathers while 39% live only with their mothers who raise the children without maintenance from the father. “Many of those [men] I have encountered can’t pay maintenance for their children, but can support the new girlfriend and provide for or pay to entertain their children,” said Schroeder. While gender equality has improved, the gap between the difference in earnings be tween men and women is still considerable. “This means that should a woman fall pregnant, be divorced or widowed, it is diffi cult for her to survive financially without the

support of the father,” said Schroeder. Schroeder is also on a crusade to ensure “deadbeat” fathers feel the wrath of the long arm of the law. Today, she helps moms navi gate the often intimidating and confusing le gal system at no cost. “This is why God’s Warehouse exists. No parent should fall through the cracks just be cause they are doing the best they can to keep their children healthy and educated,” she said. Without the laptop, this important sup port structure will grind to a halt. “We have sent messages to all our sup porters and need whatever help we can get. Any donation is welcome and every little bit counts. If more is raised, it will go straight to helping feed, clothe and support our moms,” said Schroeder. Contributions to God’s Warehouse can be deposited into the following account: God’s Warehouse First National Bank Hayfields, Pietermaritzburg Account number: 62412108434 Branch Code: 221425 Ref: PC/Your name Those needing assistance from God’s Warehouse or who would like to donate clothing, food, toys or household items can email debbie@godswarehouse.co (there is no.za). — Supplied.

Drinking spree ends in rape NOKULUNGA NGOBESE

DRINKING spree ended in disaster for a 25-year-old Elandskop man after he was allegedly raped by another man in Scottsville last week. LindaXuluallegesthathewasdruggedand raped by a man in his mid-forties at his Scottsville home, after befriending him at Hlophe’s Butchery in West Street. He said he was astonished when he woke up naked on his bed the following day. “Last Sunday night Iwasoutpartyingwith my lesbian friend at Hlophe’s Butchery when an old man invited us to drink with him. He started buying us alcohol and asked my friend to go and buy cigarettes for us. “As she left, he started questioning her gender. When she came back, we wanted to go to Bayside lounge to have more drinks and he gave us a lift. “After a few drinks, he suggested that we find an ATM as he wanted to withdraw more money.WewenttotheATMatMcDonaldscentre and proceeded to another tavern in West Street. The place was so packed we decided to have our drinks inside the car. “My friend suggested that we call a cab and proceed to a ‘stocky’ at some tavern in Edendale. Hearing that, he asked my friend to go and buy more alcohol. While she was out, hejumpedintothecarandspedoff, leavingmy friend behind.” Xulu said he does not remember what happened after that, but was astonished when he woke up the following day to find himself naked in bed with him.

Linda Xulu alleges to have been raped by another man after a drinking spree.

“I realised what had just happened and demanded that he open the door for me, which he refused to do. “On the bed there was also a pill which I suspect was used to drug me. He eventually gave in and dropped me off in town. I then went to the Loop Street police station and opened a rape case.” He said although he does not know the man’s name he can identify him as he drives a personalised Dodge Caliber. “I just want to warn young people to be vigilant. He seems to be luring young people with alcohol so that he can drug them.” SAPS spokesperson Captain Thulani Zwane confirmed that a 48-year-old man was arrested allegedly for rape last week.

S a way of giving young city people a platform to air their problems, the Children In Distress Network (Cindi) in partnership with Msunduzi Innovation and Development Institute (Midi) hosted a youth summit at the city hall last Thursday The theme of the summit was “Safe passages, creating the city we deserve”, which was attended by pupils, tertiary students and stakeholders from the SAPS, the Department of Transport and the the Department of Education. Youth co-ordinator at Cindi Mbali Mnguni said the summit is held annually for people between the ages of 12 and 23. “Ouraimistoencouragechildparticipation, hence we have opened a platform for them to discuss problems that may hinder their devel-

opment. “Often, when government makes policies and [creates] development programmes, young people are not represented enough. “We have identified common problems in school safety, pupil transport and imbalances in the education system and infrastructire. “A memorandum of understanding will be signed and sent to the city mayor in order for these problems to beaddressed,”saidMnguni. One youth ambassador, Simlindile Ndlobu, said: “There are so many problems faced by youngpeople.Thereisahugeproblemofdrinking and driving among drivers. We travel to schoolusingpublictransportdaily, but we worry that we may not reach our destination. There are lot of criminal activities in our communities. “We are also concerned about the junk food that is sold to school children as some of it is not manufactured in factories.”

N celebration of Mandela Day this year, Anatoli and Zenith Photography will be hosting an event at the Natal Carbineers Military Barracks on 19 July. Zenith Photography and Anatoli Photography have come together to create a platform encouraging local talent to expose their work. Thereafter they will offered the potential of being included into the documentary and into exhibitions nationally and internationally. The event, in partnership with the South African Defence Force, aims to commemorate 20 years of a diverse democracy and tell a collaboration of stories through photography. “We want to pursue a campaign in association with the theme of ubuntu, expressing photography that will be used in an up and coming national documentary,” said Dante Kemp, events co-ordinator. Kemp explained that their mission is to explore an eccentric culture focusing on literary, social, governmental and continental achievements and failures of South Africans. TREE of Poetry will be celebrating 20 years of democracy by hosting a fundraising Sembadih fashion show, the proceeds of which will go to the Ubuntu Crisis Centre in Edendale. Sembadih is a mix of theatrical poetry and song. The event will take place at the Tatham Art Gallery on 26 July with the designers showingcasing their garments. Speaking to Echo, Tree of Poetry secretary Menzi Sibiya he said they have chosen to celebrate this historical event of freedom in fashion in order to get an understanding of how designers see democracy. “We want to see their way of celebrating freedom through fashion with poetry and song included. “We chose this theme because we want to see how designers celebrate freedom and and [get an understanding] of what freedom means to them. “All of this will be revealed through their garments. “We also want to see how they describe the African image in this day and age. “As for the poets and musicians, they are verbal with their expressions, and we want to see the package of elevated poetry

and music in theatrical form,” he said. He said they selected the Ubuntu Crisis Centre as the home they want to assist, saying they a good working relationship with the centre. “Among all of the orphanages and homes, we know Ubuntu Crisis Centre is the neediest. “We have been helping the centre since 2011 as Pietermaritzburg artists, not only as Tree of Poetry, so we have a bond with it. “Most of the designers who will be showcasing their work are students at the school of fashion. “We know a couple of designers who attend poetry and music shows. “What we did is pitch the idea to them and they were keen to be part of the project. “We have also asked them to get other interested designers [to take part]. We have designers who will be showcasing bangles, bangs and necklaces. “Our designers will be bringing their own models for the event. We have six designers [who will bring] three models each. “We have one poet from coming from Johannesburg another one from Durban and one from Pietermaritzburg. MERICAN R&B artist Chris Walker will be performing at this year’s Pietermaritzburg JazzFestivalon2AugustattheGolden Horse Casino in Scottsville. Walker is well-known for his hit songs Giving You All My Love, Take Time and How Do You Heal A Broken Heart, to mention, a few. Other headlining acts for the Pietermaritzburg Jazz Festival day include South African multi-award winning artists Lira, Naima Kay, Mafikizolo, Letta Mbulu, Caiphus

Semenya and Phuzekhemisi. Local artists Bongani Nkwanyana, Soulful Sounds, Mzwakhe Shezi andsingerBernardwillalsoperform at this prestigious jazz event. Organisers of the Pietermaritzburg Jazz Festival have promised a world-class performance which is set to “wow” music fans. One of the event directors, Nkanyezi Cele of Starlight Promotions, said that Pietermaritzburg as the capital city of KwaZulu-Natal did not have an event that remains in the city. “Thisjazzfestivalislongoverdue.

The directors of Starlight Promotions, Cele, Brian Zuma and Njabulo Matebula, thanked the Msunduzi Municipality for the opportunity of putting together this musical event. “We are confident about our ability to live up to the expectations of our sponsors as well as the people who will attend the show” said a media statement the trio released on Monday. The jazz festival starts at 10 am. Tickets cost R200 at Computicket or R250 at the gate on the day of the event, and the VIP tickets cost R1 000.

It is about time the city of Pietermaritzburg is put on the map. The idea is to host an event which awakens Pietermaritzburg and helps in the development of local artists. The event is aimed at promoting social cohesion, celebrating culture and heritage through music, and instilling unity,” said Cele. The Pietermaritzburg Jazz festival is sponsored by the Msunduzi Municipality, The Witness, Tsogo Sun, Audi Pietermaritzburg, the Deparment of Arts and Culture, Schweppes, Edward and Snell and Cubana.

Satma nominations officially open A PROCESS for the public to nominate their favourite traditional artists and groups for the 9th annual South African Traditional Music Achievement awards (Satma) has been set in motion. Former KZN Judge President Vuka Tshabalala, the president of the Satma award foundation, last Friday officially declared the 2014 voting lines open at a gala dinner in Durban. Satma Awards founder Dumisani Goba promised that the awards will continue to honour and preserve “our culture and heritage through its support of the arts”. He said the support of South African heritage still doesn’t receive the financial support it deserves. “Musicians should be living the same profile and financial lives as their sporting counterparts, such as soccer stars,” he said. He challenged the government and associated arts and culture departments to put their financial muscle behind programmes that support the upliftment of traditional

music in its support of culture and heritage. The public are invited to nominate by SMSing their favourite artist or group and category to 34066. SMS’s cost R1.50. Free SMSes do not apply. The two-day event starts with an indigenous comedy show on 3 October with the event following on 4 October, at the University of Fort Hare. IETERMARITZBURG’S youngest drifter Kyle Amod will be performing at the national spinning event at the Sidewayz market on Saturday 12 July. The 14yearold car fanatic is recog nised as one of the top spinners and drift ers in Pietermaritzburg, keeping specta torsontheedgeoftheirseatswithhisorigi nal and exciting stunts. Speaking to Maritzburg Fever, Kyle said that he has always been interested in cars and all that comes with it. Learning the ins and outs of the car became some thing that Kyle grew to love. He began spinning last year after ob taining his Motorsport South Africa (MSA) drifting licence. He said that he owes his success mainly to two men who have helped him get where he is in the drifting arena his father Morné, who spared no cost when it came to building a car for his son to drive, and his mentor Bruce Swartly. “Bruce taught me how to spin. I learnt everything from him. I was very nervous when I competed for the first time but Bruce was right there next to me and told me that everything would be okay,” said Kyle. He said his mother and family support him fully and are very proud of him. “From young, I was always interested in cars and I always wanted to be the best drifter and spinner. “That’s still my goal,” he said. Kyle will be competing with top spin ners from around the country. Gates open at 12.30pm. Entry is R50 for adults, children under five get in free.

THE reinvented secondgeneration Nissan Qashqai will be available later this month on South African roads. It is set to continue the success of the popular firstgeneration model, which is wellknown for its compact hatchback proportions coupled with the ad venturous driving stance of an SUV. “The ultimate driving experience – this is how we describe the new Nissan Qashqai,” commented Kon stantin von Vieregge, general manager of marketing and planning at Nissan South Africa. “The new model represents a new lifestyle choice for people who value their driving as part of their eve ryday experience, and aim to make their time behind the wheel more than just a chore.” “New and revamped from the ground up, the new Nissan Qashqai is a vehicle that can do it all – it has the space, power, comfort, versatility and practi cality to suit the busy and ad venturous lifestyles of South African buyers,” added Nancy Reddy, product manager for passenger and crossover ve hiclesatNissanSouthAfrica. The new Qashqai arrives with a fivemodel range supported by three engine variants and two trim lines. Rather than being simply a reworked original with a renewed lease on life, the new Qashqai is long er, wider, lower, lighter and redesigned from the ground up. It also boasts stateoftheart technology, in

creased efficiency, and a sassy new character. The new interior, which is bolstered by the three core ele ments of comfort, connectivity and control, is where thebiggestleapinqualityandfeelhasbeenachieved. The ergonomic layout ensures ease of use, with key touch points and surfaces designed to enhance the sensory experience and provide longterm durability. The availability of space remains a key factor in the Qashqai, and ample seating is available for five occu pants. The 430litre boot which is fronted by a tail gate which now opens 150 mm higher than before, is 20 litres bigger than that of its first generation counterpart. The new Qashqai achieved five stars in the increasingly stringent Euro NCAP crash tests, and all models carry the highest comple ment of safety equipment as standard, including fourdisc ABS with EBD (Elec tronic Brakeforce Distribution) and BAS (Brake Assist System), six airbags, Vehicle Dynamic Control (VDC), hill start assistance, an electric parking brake, threepoint seat belts for all five seats and Isofix child seat anchor points. The Nissan Around View Monitor is available as an option on all derivatives except the Qashqai 1.2T Visia. This monitor incorpo rates four exterior cameras – on the nose, tailgate and under each door mirror – to cre ate a “helicopter view” of the vehicle. All new Qashqai models carry Nissan’s sixyear/150 000km warranty and a five year/90 000 km service plan.

FORD Motor Company of Southern Africa (FMCSA) will give a glimpse of its vision for a new Ford Figo concept later this month. Highlighting premium design along with smart and safety features, the concept vehicle provides an indication of the design language to be used in a future version of the popular Figo. It is confirmed that a production version of the Figo Concept is planned for the South African market, but details and specifications have yet to be confirmed. At less than four metres long, the concept displays a purposeful presence and a no-compromise aesthetic that continues Ford’s design leadership in the global compact car market. “We don’t want consumers to have to compromise when it comes to choosing modern design, value, safety, and technology in their cars,” says Mark Kaufman, vice president for marketing, sales and service of Ford Sub-Saharan Africa. “Figo’s concept offers all of the above in a package that would surprise many.” The Figo concept explores the possibility of offering fresh design and a roomy interior, as well as the latest safety features and technolo-

gies. With the goal of bringing unexpected levels of refinement to the compact car segment, designers have added elements common only to more expensive vehicles. Smart design features like electrically adjustable power-fold mirrors help to reduce the stress of driving through a busy and congested environment. The mirrors also have a flexible architecture that prevents them from being broken off if bumped. Moving inside, the spacious cabin is filled with innovative stowage spaces. With an innovative device dock, the Figo Concept introduces a new way to store, mount and charge devices such as mobile phones, MP3 players and satellite navigation systems. “The Ford Figo Concept is the embodiment of how we are building on the One Ford plan to go further for all of our customers globally. The design builds on Ford’s brand pillars (quality, green, safe, and smart) to meet all the functional requirementscustomersexpectwhileproviding a package that is sure to surprise and delight customers,” concluded Moray Callum, Ford Motor Company’s vice president of design.

F you have been wondering who the president of Mgungundlovu and District Netball Association is, she is Matholi Nsele, a resident of Imbali Unit 18. Nsele is a former school sprinter, karateka and model. She finished her schooling at Njoloba and Mphophomeni High in Howick. This week Echo asked her some questions Echo: Explain your position or duties in the local netball association. Matholi Nsele (MN): I am the president or chairperson for Mgun gundlovu and District Netball Associ ation. My main duty is to lead and head the federation. Echo: Officially who are the affili ates of your federation? MN: All the local municipalities within the Mgungundlovu district. Echo: Besides you, who are other officials are under this wing? MN: There is Angie Xaba [secretary], Mabuyi Madlala, Sthembiso Mncwabe, Lungwana Xulu and Arthur Maseko, to count a few. Echo: Explain how the structure is actually made up of, from local cir cles, regional to provincial or nation al level? MN: The federation is mostly made up of officials from various local mu nicipalities. In simple terms, as a dis trict we accommodate local associa tions right up to the regional, provincial and the national level, un der Netball South Africa. I remember many years ago dur ing the days of the Natal Midlands Netball Association under Joe Majola and PMBMsunduzi Municipality un der chairman Singh, we used to have teams and fixtures or tournaments taking place almost every weekend or at least monthly. We also had teams from around SOUTH Africans need to accept that for a country of over 50 million people we are not producing the quality of players at top level who have the necessary technical skills required by major clubs and international teams. There is something terribly wrong with our football. We have allowed fail ing philosophies to influence our game, eg. English. Currently, Portugal ideas and phi losophy have been added over and above the German, English, Dutch and Brazilian methods and philosophies. English football over the years has always valued hard work and determi nation over technical skills and intelli gence. We have a generation of promi nent coaches in this country schooled in this philosophy. They receive more

ECHO: Does it still happen or are you guys active in the same way? MN: We still have teams from local circles right up to the regional level. I must point though that we don’t re ally play or have tournaments every weekend, but we are active. It is im possible to play every weekend because we lack funds. In fact we don’t have an official sponsor for local netball. Echo: What exactly is the position of local netball — would you say it is good, battling or there is a room for improvement? MN: We are doing good, especially when it comes to developing or rais ing the bar of the game. We enjoy a good relationship with the majority of local schools.

Echo: What do you think is still needed to take the local game to the next level? MN: We honestly need more training of our coaches or officials to get proper papers for the game. So far only passion is pushing most of us. The other big problem that is affect ing netball in a big way is that there are no netball facilities within the Msunduzi Municipality and to hire private ones is very expensive. Echo: We are already in the middle of the year. Are there any events that are being staged by Mgungund lovu at the moment? MN: Yes, we held a couple of event to mark the start of the new season and to conduct selection of different age groups. Echo: Are there any on going devel opment programmes? MN: Yes, as I earlier said we enjoy a

TALKING FOOTBALL

THABO DLADLA time on national television and radio while the print media also give them huge space for comments. This is one of the reasons why foot ball fans talk of big strikers and central

defenders. This is what the outdated direct football requires. It boggles the mind why football leaders in a country like South Africa continue hiring coaches indoctrinated in the direct safety first mentality. We are failing to learn from those lifting major international trophies. We have allowed mentalities that value last ditch crunching tackles, where the ball flies out of play and is booted into the stands instead of those that look to dribble or pass to their teammates. It should not surprise that fans spend 90 minutes singing and facing away from the action. The develop ment centres springing up all over

good relationship with local schools. Most of our senior players are work ing with local schools as develop ment officers or trainers. Those players are active in areas such as Northdale, Sweetwaters, Im bali, University of KZN and DUT. Echo: How many players are cur rently involved with provincial or na tional teams? MN: There are a couple of players from Mgungundlovu that are regu lars in the provincial teams and also at the national level. The likes of Bongiwe Msomi, Skhokho Shezi, Khaliphi Gebisela, Mitchel Segal, Minky Moahlali, Fezeka Gambushe and Precious Mthembu. Echo: I know that the Department of Sports and Recretaion always play a very important role in the game, can you explain this. MN: Yes, DSR are always on board and positively support us in many ways. They help us with equipment, guidance, training, workshops, trans port and accomodation when travel ling. Echo: Finally, do you think the fu ture of netball in Mgungundlovu is bright and on the right track? MN: We are doing fairly well, I mean for our players to be regulars in the provincial and national teams, speaks volumes about the local game. KZN is currently hosting a nation al tournament this week at Durban’s Hoy Park for the U19 and U21 (fe males and males). It started on Monday and will be wrapped up on Saturday 12 July . • Nsele was interviewed by Jerry Barnes. South Africa under foreign technical influence is not helping our course. Children born in the southern part of Africa are not only different to Euro peans, but also to those from other parts of Africa. Currently, peo ple are obsessed with numbers games i.e. how many blacks are in a team in stead of matters of training and educa tion. We complain that teams are too white while welcoming training ideas that do not suit a black child. Unzima lo mthwalo!

Sunfoil tournament reveals new talent ATOTALof72ofKwaZuluNatal’smost promising young cricketers were select ed for six teams making up the elite Sunfoil development squad at the con clusion of this year’s Sunfoil Township Tournament. This has paved the way for the de velopment of the great talents of the future for both the province and South Africa. The tournament, which took place at Hilton College from 1 to 4 July, is a key element of a successful develop ment programme run by the KwaZulu Natal Cricket Union (KZNCU) and Wil lowton Group, manufacturers of Sun foil cooking oil. It provides disadvantaged young sters within the coaching programme the opportunity of showcasing their talent in a competitive match environ ment. Over four days, 300 young cricket ers from KZN, Gauteng, border, Griqua land West and Western Province, divid ed into 24 teams of 12, played 49 matches in a T20 format. Maritzburg United beef up their squad

THE local Premier Soccer League outfit Maritzburg United seem to be pulling out all the stops to reinforce itself before the start of 2014/2015 season. The Team of Choice is negotiating with some PSL giants and individual players, either for a possible permanent or loan player. United communications and marketing director Brian Zuma this week confirmed to Echo that his bosses are working around the clock to secure the services of certain players. Zuma says at the moment it is difficult to saythetotalnumberofplayersexpectedtojoin the Team of Choice. “I can tell you that management is still busy in the market, but I don’t want lie to by telling the exact number of players coming on board. “At the moment it’s impossible to predict how many players are likely to join us,” he said. However, he said the club is expected to introduce new recruits officially to the media either on 29 or 20 July. Meanwhile Echo has learnt that United were almost done with the acquisitions of defender Kwanda Mngonyama and midfielder Sibusiso Khumalo from Mamelodi Sundowns. Both players are on loan for one season. United chairman Farouk Kadodia this week confirmed their arrival in the City of Choice. “They are in Pietermaritzburg as we speak and have already started training.” TalkstoalsobringalongthePretoria-based defender Abel Mabaso are also looking positive. Possibilities are looking up for another Sundowns striker Rodney Ramagalela, who might end up wearing the Team of Choice colours. United’s head coach Steve Komphela is also looking at other players, including Zimbabwean left-back Khumbulani Banda, who is likely to be a replacement for Ruben Cloete. — Jerry Barnes.
