CRISIS

AGING battles at UKZN’s Pietermaritzburg campus between students and riot police intensified on Monday. The protests are over a rumoured registration fee increase. Police were forced to fire rubber bullets after students threw stones at them and members of Risk Management Services. In the process, one student was arrested and three others were injured and rushed to hospital, accordingtoStudentsRepresentative Council (SRC) president Lungani Nhlenyama. He insists management told them that the annual registration fee will rise over 100%, but the institution rubbished those claims last week. Academicprogrammesweresetto resume on Tuesday after being suspended for two days following violent protests on Thursday. Angry students threw stones at a passing car and forced the driver to reverse away. They carried sticks and placards with statements such as; “F**k management, down with R9 000. This means war”. What the issues were according to the SRC: >> It is true that the university wants to raise the registration fee for tuition in 2015. >>ItistruethatSRCistotallyagainst any form of fee increment. >> ItisNOTtruethattuitionregistra tion for 2015, is R 9000. The figures on the table from management are below R5000 but the SRC continues to reject them. >> The registration fee for residenc es does not form part of the discussions. >> Tuition fees do not form part of discussions.

A fierce fight broke out when a student drenched the burning tyres with a fire extinguisher. That fuelled the situation and the group turned on him, but he kept thematbaybysprayingthemwiththe extinguisher. The crowd then ran to the police chanting, “gun free country”. They also threatened to storm the

police station, demanding that the arrested student be released. Environmental science student Micaela Keddie said their lecture was disrupted and students in class were forced to get out. “They came in banging the door and shouting at us. Our lecturer had to rescue us through the back door. I support the strike but it’s not properly done. It’s unfair to force us out of the class,” said Keddie. Provincial police spokesperson

Thulani Zwane disputed the SRC’s report that a student was arrested. He said no incidents had been reported. Meanwhile, the Higher Education Department called on the management and student leadership to find a solution. “The ministry condemns in the strongest terms the criminal acts of damaging the university property,” said department spokesperson Khaye Nkwanyana. “No amount of anger and frustra-

tion can justify vandalising public property that belongs to the future generations of students.” AccordingtoaPHDstudent, things had gone back to normal by Tuesday. UKZN spokesperson Convy Baloyi issued a statement saying that the strike had ended following intense discussions between the SRC and management on issues raised by students. This included the issue of the registration fee. The outcome would be communicated later.

EAR gripped the residents of Shenstone farm near Thornville after municipal guards last week demolished two houses, allegedly for being built on municipal land. The area between Ambleton farm and France township has been under controversy since 2012, as house owners were alleged to have invaded municipal land. Last year, the municipality lodged a court application to evict more than 1 000 families and to demolish their homes. According to the residents, despite

winning the case against the municipality last year, they still continue to being victims of harassment. A resident who spoke to Echo, Nicky Gebashe, said that following the demolition of these two houses, they now live in fear as they do not know their fate. “We are unsettled as to what will happen next. When we started building houses in this area, we were stopped as we were told that it was municipal land. “After the matter had gone to court, we were told that we could continue building as the municipality did not followthecorrectprocedures.Wewere

Njalo ngezimpela sonto, uSimphiwe nabangani bakhe babeya ezindaweni zokuphuza utshwala kanye nasemaphathini.Uma belapho babehlangana nabesifazane abahlukahlukene, babathengele utshwala, uma sebedle izinkambizikafaro babenza ucansi nabo. “Sasishela amantombazane ahlukahlukene, emva kalokho siwathengele utshwala, sasidakwa bese silala nawo. told that there was a boundary where we cannot build since it is municipal land, andwe followedthatinstruction. “Our main concern is that these guards are demolishing houses without any eviction letters from court. How can we pay for electricity and water usage when we have invaded municipal land?” he asked. According to previous reports from the Witness, the land has been in question for more than 10 years, as it was earmarked for the building of 3 000 low-cost houses for residents of France. The project was stalled due to the municipality’s budgetary constraints. One of the people who was affected by last week’s demolition, Collen Mapfumo, said that he has taken the matter to court and is waiting for that decision. “I have lost more than R40 000 in damages and would need to work hard to repay it,” he said. Ward councillor Sindi Gwala said the land in question belongs to the municipality and it is earmarked for a development project that will assist residents from ward 18. “Some residents do not attend community meetings and are unaware of what is happening. There are people who claim to be landowners and sell the land to unsuspecting people. “As far as I am aware, no case was ever won in court.” At the time of going to print, the municipality could not be reached for comment.

IKE any other DJ, he started spinning the vinyls at parties and at local clubs. But his focus was always that one day he would release an album of his own music. His name is DJ Too Nice, real name Sboniso Latha, a university graduate and his song titled “Asisekho lapho” is currentlyplayingondifferentcommercial and local radio stations around the province. The self confessed music fanatic said he has always had a passion

for music. The 25 year old DJ said apart from living and breathing music, he loves working with different and new artists who are hungry for success in the music industry. He is currently busy promoting his three songs that are on the album which will be released next year. Apart from promoting the album in South Africa, Latha has signed a partner ship contract with Smooth Agent Records in the United States of America. “I’m one of the people who believe that charity begins at home. That is why I am promoting my songs in my city of residence. My journey began in 2008

I believe that names such as DJ Sbu, Fresh and others have put SA mu sic on the map,” said Latha. Asked how he sees the growth of music in PMB, he said it’s up to local artists to grow music locally before head ing to other provinces. Third-generation Sorento unveiled overseas

T

HE new Kia Sorento was unveiled in Korea in August with a unique blend of style, practicality and technology, which builds on the success of the outgoing model. The new CUV’s smoother, swept-back profile and sculpted surfaces introduce a higher level of sophistication for the third-generation model, deliveringapremiumlookandfeel, with more space and numerous innovative features. The designers of the third-generation Kia Sorento named their inspiration for the new car as “Streetwolf”. Although the styling changes are evolutionary, they subtly alter the character of the new Sorento, highlighting its sleek, sinuous, profile, while creating a sophisticated appearance and ensuring the new model has a bolder on-theroad presence. In profile, the new model retains the Sorento’s hallmark long bonnet and characteristic wide D-pillar, but a lower roofline, higher beltline and swept-back shape give the car dramatic, muscular stance. The exterior styling was led by Kia’s Namyang design studio in Korea, with significant input from the brand’s Frankfurt, Germany and Irvine, California design studios. The styling of the cabin follows a “modern and wide” theme, providing the interior with a stable, horizontal layout and appearance. Thiswidthisechoedinthewiderinstrument cluster, interior garnish and the wrap-around

shape of the dashboard which extends into the door trims. A higher proportion of soft-touch materials and leather creates a modern luxury feel to the cabin and gives the new Sorento a genuine premium vehicle ambience. Compared to the previous-generation model, the increased exterior dimensions and the extended wheelbase (+80 mm to 2,780 mm) have liberated additional space in the cabin of the new car. Although the roof-line is 15mm lower, repositioned seat cushions ensure increased headroom for occupants in all three rows, who will also enjoy greater leg room. Cargo space also increases, with a longer cargo bay floor (up by 87 mm), and capacity with the third row seats folded flat up 17.5%, from 515 litres to 605 litres (VDA). The new Sorento also features a new under-floor tonneau cover storage compartment. The new Sorento debuts a number of new, advanced on-board technologies to improve convenience and further enhance the ownership experience. When developing the new Sorento, a key focus for the Kia chassis engineering team was achieving improvements in ride comfort, highspeed stability and handling response. Kia South Africa says the new Sorento will arrive locally during the first quarter of 2015. - Supplied

THABO DLADLA

WE HAVE NOT BEEN ABLE TO PRODUCE A FOOTBALLER CAPABLE OF PLAYING FOR THE MADRIDS AND BARCELONAS OF THIS WORLD IN THE LAST 20 YEARS.

It is also true that presently, the majority of people in football lack passion for the game. There are too many of us using the game to serve our egos. How many of us serve football like God? Arsene Wenger calls it a spiritual thing - having football interest coming before your interests. How many footballers in this country do extra work to improve their technical quality? Footballers who train and compete with a smile do well in football. They do not feel any pressure or tiredness. The correct mindset has to start with coaches and officials. South African players are a product of their foot-

ball administrators and coaches. Coaches need to take their jobs very seriously. We need to spend lots of time before and after training working on improving training of players. Are we detailed enough? Do we spend enough time looking at the details, researching topics, observing matches and studying the game? I doubt if this is happening at present. Our players also need to push themselves beyond their comfort zones. We need players that push themselves to be better and coaches that fully understand their roles. Unzima lo mthwalo!

It is refreshing to see and read about what others are doing. Presently, we face a situation where people have become prisoners of fear. We fear change. We have failed to evolve, a complete change from the past. Presently, we have become obsessed with certificates and levels. We seem to think that certifying people will solve all the problems. Believe me, I am a firm believer of meaningful education. We have not been able to produce a footballer capable of playing for the Madrids and Barcelonas of this world in the last 20 years. The present training methods are failing local talent big time. Sure, clubs like Ajax Cape Town are producing good players’, but not exceptional, creative and special footballers.

PSL action back >> Maritzburg United’s assignment against Amazayoni is likely to be tricky

HATEVER happened to Mzansi’s senior national Bafana Bafana on Wednesday in Cape Town again the West Africans giants Nigeria should be put behindtheteamandtakenasanassignmentforanotherday. The new look Bafana Bafana, under the leadership of Ephraim” Shakes” Mashaba, played yesterday in the 2015 African Nations Cup qualifiers. The was no result at the time of going to print. This weekend, the PSL fixtures will be in full swing after two weeks of Fifa break. Players who have represented their country are going to be back in their respective teams and fighting for their places. The local PSL outfit Maritzburg United will be at home against Mpumalanga Black Aces on Saturday at 3pm. Last night (Wednesday) the Team Of Choice received another shot in the arm when local metal giant Hulamin came on board as one of its sponsors. Although the new friendship was not for the senior team but for their reserve under 19 side, United’s spokesman Brian Zuma said the new deal is warmly welcomed and means a lot for the junior structures. “The new deal is good news and it’s going to take our development structures to another level,” he said. The reserve (U19) teams are the talk of the country these days. Multichoice officially came on board as official sponsors of this league at PSL level. MultiChoice and the Premier Soccer League (PSL) on Friday announced details of the first festival weekend of the MultiChoice Diski Challenge to take place at the King Zwelithini Stadium on Saturday. Ikusasa Elihle school are Kay Motsepe Cup winners THE local South African Schools Football Association (Sasfa) has pleaded with the Msunduzi Municipalitytobuildmoreplaying grounds. According to Sasfa deputy president S’pha Khumalo, while there is a big shortage of playing grounds within the municipality, the majority of the existing ones are in a bad condition. Khumalo said most of the groundsaroundthecityareleased to Maritzburg College and it is a battle to fixture games. “We really need our municipality to come on board on this one. There is a huge shortage of grounds and Sasfa is battling to stage events. “You will remember that local schools used to use Qokololo stadium but it was demolished and never replaced. Also, Tatham and Manor grounds are unplayable and neglected. Even the grounds near Camps Drift are not open to everybody

because they are leased to Maritzburg College,” said Khumalo. Meanwhile, Willowfontein's Ikusasa Elihle secondary school are the Champions of UMgungundlovu District’s Kay Motsepe Cup. This was confirmed recently at Camps Drift Grounds near Makro. The Willowfontein boys beat Copesville Secondary School 1-0 in the final. Ikusasa Elihle's head coach, Nkosi Ngubane told Echo that his boys won because of the passion and commitment they displayed on and off the field. “Really, what took us far was unity, hard work and outstanding team work displayed by my players,” said Ngubane. Ikusasa Elihle will now represent UMgundundlovu in the provincial tournament late this month in Durban. - Jerry Barnes.

Pretoriaat2.30pmandBidvestWitswillplayPlatinumStars at 4.30pm. Multichoice said that the first festival weekend will include Durban’s finest entertainers, food and drink, as well as great giveaways. Entrance to the stadium will be free. The league will be officially launched at Moses Mabhida stadium on Saturday with a game between Maritzburg United against Kaizer Chiefs and AmaZulu and Orlando Pirates. “Sponsors such as Hulamin are part of a business sector with vision and who are investing in the country’s sport, especially in the city. This means a lot to the club and just shows that we are on the right track for bigger things in the future,” said Zuma. United’s assignment against Amazayoni is likely to be more tricky than tough. The home side will have to make sure that they keep their heads high and keep their impressive run on the local pitch. The Team of Choice’s position and record in the league run is better than that of the Mpumalanga based outfit under former Bafana Bafana coach Clive Barker. So far, the Team of Choice has played five games in the new campaign, won two, lost one, drawn two, collected eight points and are sitting in position six. Black Aces are fourth from the bottom (position 12) having only managed to win one game, draw two and have collected five points. Zuma says the PMB side will have an edge over their visitors because they are playing at home and in front of their followers. However, he said they will have to go for broke from the onset and aim to secure maximum points. The other KZN team, AmaZulu will be travelling to Limpopo to face Polokwane City at Old Peter Mokaba Stadium also on Saturday at 6pm. -Jerry Barnes
