LASSESatEastwoodPrimarySchool have allegedly been divided according to the race of pupils, and the teaching staff have called it an insult to democracy. The alleged racial segmentation was implemented at the beginning of the year by school principal Jean Vetter. African teachers teach Zulu speaking pupils while Coloured teachers are responsible for those pupils who speak Afrikaans, said a source. Speaking to Echo, teachers confirmed this act of classing pupils according to their ethnicity and said it was racist. They said that last year, Vetter threatened to phase out the isiZulu language and even took the matter to the department. “She lied and told the department that there was a shortage of Zulu language teachers. The aim was to scrap the Zulu language and make pupils learn Afrikaans instead. This racial segregation has placed pressure on Zulu language teachers who end up having 50 pupils in class, while the Coloured teachers have a much smaller number. At the school, we have almost 80%ofZuluspeakingpupilsandit’sstrenuous on African teachers. This implementation promotes racism among pupils and it kills the spirit of a rainbow nation. A school is an institution where a child should learn but in this situation, it’s like they are fed on how to be racist,” said the teacher. Another teacher said that the issue of isiZulu was dealt with last year and the Department of Education was informed and intervened. “African teachers end up having overcrowded classes to teach. The principal is against the teaching and learning of Zulu and she can’t hide it,” said the teacher. While the principal could not comment, KZN Education spokesperson Muzi Mahlambi said they will send the circuit management team to the school to check if the allegations are true. “They will have to check if that is done for curriculum purposes or if it’s discriminatory because if the latter is the case, then that is unacceptable,” said Mahlambi.

EFF members ordered out >> Members of the Economic Freedom Fighters told to get out of Sobantu as they visited an IEC voting station NOMPENDULO NGUBANE

U

MGUNGUNDLOVU EFF regional convenor Reggie Ngcobo has described some ANC members in Sobantu as hooligans. This after reports on Sunday that there was confrontation between members of the ANC and the EFF at Mfenendala community hall in Sobantu.

According to Ngcobo, members of the EFF went there to check the turnout of voters who came for registration, as it was the IEC’s registration weekend. “We had done the same thing with other voting districts in France and Imbali Unit 14. We were not there to fight or distract anyone in Sobantu. WearrivedinSobantuandaccommodated ourselves outside the hall. “As we were sitting there, a group of five women started making some

noise over nothing. They started shouting which drew a lot of attention and people started flocking in. They were swearing. And seeing that happening, police had to intervene. “The police had to form a human shield to separate us from them. We had planned to stay there for 15 minutes but seeing that the ANC membershadmadeuscelebrities,we stayed longer than we had planned to,” said Ngcobo. Ward councillor Thandi Matiwane

said the ANC is grateful for the EFF members misbehaviour. She said with the noise and chaos caused by EFF members, the Sobantu community came in numbers to register and to check if they were on the voters roll. “Most people were too lazy to come to the voting district because it was a Sunday. We thank the EFF for drawing attention. With all the chaos and noise, people came out in numbers to register. We had a huge turnout, especially with the new voters. I

would like to emphasise that members of EFF were intimidating the community. They blocked the entrance and they started taking pictures using their iPads. It was not the ANC members. Tthe community of Sobantu was against what they were doing and no one was hurt or beaten,” said Matiwane. Captain Thulani Zwane said there was a case of intimidation that was opened by the EFF members but no one had been arrested.

engagement held at the YMCA recently. The purpose of the engagement was to grant an opportunity to community members and journalists to participate in a discussion about issues on the environment. Non-governmental organisations (NGOs) were present to discuss issues concerning the environment in their areas. One of the speakers was South African Waste Pickers’ Association (Sawpa) spokesperson Simon Mbata, who described Sawpa as an organised movement of people working on landfill sites and in the streets. He said people from this movement collect recyclable waste materials and earn an income from selling the waste material for recycling. “Most people undermine waste pickers and the formation of this movement was to create that respect and reveal a waste pickers’ contribution to climate change. Sawpa was the key to promoting waste picking on an international platform at the United Nation’s climate change talks held in Durban last year,” said Mbata. Mpumalanga Youth Against Climate Change (MYACC) volunteer Nomcebo Makhubelo, said the organisation is there to make the youth awareofclimatechange.Theydecidedthattheatre and poetry would be the medium through which they would create awareness and mobilise communities around environmental issues. “We do poetry on climate change in order to educate how the environment is affected by the big industries. We work on issues related to air quality, climate change, energy, water, environmental health and waste,” said Vaal Environmental Justice Alliance (VEJA) coordinator Samson Mokoena. VEJA aims to promote a culture of awareness in communities through educational workshops, he said. “We also provide a local network of support and assistance to community based organisations in the Vaal,” he said. South Durban Community Environmental Alliance (SDCEA) coordinator Desmond D'sa said his organisation has been active since 1996 and they have been vocal and vigilant in terms of lobbying, reporting and researching industrial incidents in the area.

>> Demystifying two main points raised by the opposition parties against the ANC: The ANC shall indeed rule South Africa for the unforeseeable future!, writes THEMBINKOSI ‘GUERRILLA’ ZONDI

“cronyism…lack of integrity, complacency of incumbency and at times arrogance and a failure to deal with wayward members”, which the ANC also admits. Instead, this short article seeks to demystify two main points raised by the opposition parties against the ANC. Firstly, the opposition argues that the ANC government has allowed the issue of corruption to reach unprecedented levels. Secondly, that the ANC government has failed to improve the lives of the South African people such that some opposition parties, such as the EFF, have stopped short from daring to claim that the apartheid government was better than the ANC government. Let me quickly deal with each of these points before proceeding to argue as to why the current fragmented state of opposition parties vindicates the claim that the ANC shall indeed rule South Africa for the unforeseeable future. a reader of this article – agree with me or not, the truth of the matter is that the ANC government has done a lot to arrest the issue of corruption. For instance since 1994, the ANC governmenthasbeenintensifyingthe fight against corruption, both in the public and private sectors, from initiating methods aimed at preventing public servants from doing business to holding public officials individually liable for losses arising from corruption. Additionally, it has taken an unprecedented decision that any ANC member or ANC public representative found guilty before a court of law, especially on charges of corruption, should step down from any leadership positions in the ANC, government and society at large. As much as the above decision is yet to be given practical meaning, it signals a serious commitment to fighting against corruption. Moreover, the ANC government has put in place systems and programs which have exposed corrupt activities. However, the ANC admits that all of these are not enough, hence it calls on boththeprivateandthepublicsectors to desist from participating in corrupt activities such as bribing public servants etc. The claim that the ANC has failed to improve the lives of South Africans

is fallacious to say the least. For instance, the ANC government has done a lot to transform Bantu education to an inclusive education system, resulting in the elevation of the senior certificate rate to above 70%. Arising from this and other government interventions, the number of graduates has doubled since the ANC government took over. Furthermore, it is also an indisputable fact that today more than 15 million people are able to go to bed with something in their stomachs because of the comprehensive antipoverty programs aimed at intensifying social security networks, thus contributing significantly towards addressing three scientific discoveries made by Karl Marx as observed by his friend Frederick Engels, which is the issue of food, and shelter, in the light of the fact that it has built more than 3.1 million houses. Another fact which cannot be disputed is that the ANC government remains committed to fighting against joblessness through different initiatives, which includes – although not limited to – labour-intensive public works programs of whose incentives can be used by beneficiaries to address the issue of clothing beyond food and shelter, among other things. Therefore, it is misleading and myopic for the opposition parties to

pempe. Abanye imithetho bayiphula mihla yonke, kodwa ngeke uzwe imiphakathi ithi abashaywe. argue that the ANC government has never done nothing to improve the lives of South Africans, especially considering the fact that the South African economy has increased from 83% over the past 19 years and that the disposable income per capita of households has augmented by 43% and the total employment has increased by more than 3.5 million since the Peoples Government came into office (see the ANC Statement on 20 Years of Democracy). Flowing from the above, I content that no opposition would have managed to score some of the above victories other than the 102 years old national liberation movement. Let me conclude by agreeing with four key reasons as to why South African opposition parties will never defeat the ANC, thus making the ANC government to be more relevant than ever before. Firstly, itistruethat“someofthese opposition parties are direct offshootsorimitationsofthe‘broadANC church’ in some form.” Secondly, that “each of these parties is led by a single domineering ‘cult-like or disgruntled figure’ without whom these is no party.” Thirdly, “the leader is the party and the party leader is not ready to be led by any other member within the party or other opposition party leaders” (the recent five day marriage of DA and Agang being a relevant recent example) and finally that “some of the leadershavesuchchequeredpolitical history and record”. All of these four points mean one thing to the voter which is: “this is neither the time (hoping no such time will ever come) to contemplate removing the ANC government nor to give it less support” as Prof correctly puts it. As a result, the ANC shall indeed rule South Africa into the unforeseeable future. *Thembinkosi “Guerrilla” Zondi is the KZN 221 ward 3 ANC branch secretary and ANC caucus KZN Legislature Senior Researcher writing in his own personal capacity.

S much as I have been flirting with the idea of writing an article about how the current opposition parties in South Africa will neverdefeatthe102yearsoldAfrican National Congress (ANC), even if they were to swallow their often inflated but bruised political egos, I must confess that this article is mainly motivated by Professor Malegapuru Makgoba’s article that he recently wrote titled “A democracy at the crossroads.” This article appeared in the City Press publication of 19 January 2014 on page 30. For the benefit of those who might havemissedMakgoba’sarticle, letme quickly highlight what I think are some of the key points. The Prof. argued – and I absolutely agree – that since 1994, there has been significant changes (both in terms of quality and quantity) in most ruralandurbanareasinSouthAfrica. These changes include, although are not limited to, tarred roads, electricity, clean running water, health facilities such as clinics, schools and the extension of government grants which are received on time. I am pleased that at least some academics such as Makgoba do have guts to admit that the ANC and its governmentisthebestthingthathasever happenedtoSouthAfricainthatithas madethelatteralivewithpossibilities and a better country to live in, notwithstanding some challenges, most of which are structural. However, the main intention for writing this article is not to whine about well-known post-1994 structural challenges such as poverty, unemployment and inequalities, including internal ANC problems as correctly identified by the Prof. like

PMB theatre workshops with German artists ON a mission to teach aspiring actors about different theatrical productions, Umphithi theatre in partnership with Phenduka theatre are conducting a series of workshops at the Winston Churchill. Theworkshops, whicharedoneinpartner ship with a German arts company, are aimed at instilling the love of theatre among aspiring actors and to teach them about the different types of theatrical productions. Project coordinator Skhumbuzo Dlamini said: “This is a pilot project to facilitate workshops to those artists who do not know about theatre, and those who are already involved but lack information on physical theatre. Most artists are not trained on physical theatre. They are used toonlyonetypeoftheatrewhichismusical where there is a lot of music and many actors on stage. “In physical theatre there are only a few actors who have to perform without any instruments in the background. Through these workshops, we want to upskill aspir ing actors by exposing them to different types of theatre, and at the same time, link them with actors from Germany,” he said. He said that there is a huge gap among city artists in terms of theatre performance, and through these workshop.,they are hoping to take theatrical performance to the next level. “City artists are talented but are not exposed to theatre performances and as a result, lose out on opportunities. We will be using ‘Woza Albert’, a stage play by Mbongeni Ngema, to showcase what we mean by physical theatre”, said Dlamini. He said the focus is mainly on underprivi leged areas as there are also plans to encourage speech and drama in disadvan taged schools. For more informa tion, contact Dlamini at 079 287 3763

OZA Albert! is one of the plays for which South African theatre is best known internationally. Its style of storytelling has inspired and influenced theatre companies around the world, and it remains one of the most vibrant examples of satirical anti-apartheid South African Theatre. This classic of South African theatre asks what would happen if Christ (Morena) came back to 1980’s apartheid South Africa. The show is primarily a satire that highlights the absurdities of apartheid and displays the talents of two dextrous actors, in this case TQ Zondi and Mpilo Nzimande, who play a range of ordinary characters on the street. Directed by Peter Mitchell, the first half of this production highlights the absurdity of pass

laws and the ultimate control employers had over the lives of their employees. As it moves through to the anticipation and arrival of the saviour (courtesy of SAA), it becomesdarkerandmoreforebodingashislife is relived in an apartheid context. Using the elements of theatre established by Jerzy Grotowski and Peter Brook, and combining them with South African Township Theatre, the creators of the piece, director Barney Simon and performers Mbongeni Ngema and Percy Mtwa, evolved a piece of theatre that has stood the test of time. Woza Albert! will feature at the Hexagon Theatre on 19, 20, 21, 26 and 27 February at 6pm. Tickets cost R60 (R40 for students and seniors). Bookings at Computicket. — Arts Editor

Clash of the Choir SA is coming back CLASH of the Choirs SA is returning to Mzansi Magic (DStv channel 161) for a second season. Last year, the country was captivated by the search for the choir of choirs that saw hopefuls auditioningcountrywideforachancetobepart of this one-of-a-kind reality show. In the end, it was Khaya Mthethwa’s handpicked 20-piece choir from KwaZuluNatal that took the crown — and the R750 000 grand prize, with R250 000 going to the Siyanakekela charity in Umlazi.

Those interested in auditioning for this year’s competition can do so in Durban on the weekend of 22 and 23 February. The venue is the Howard College Campus of the University of KwaZulu-Natal in Mazisi Kunene Rd (formerly King George V Avenue/ South Ridge Road) Glenwood. TALKING FOOTBALL

THABO DLADLA

Neglected grounds WE are definitely letting down the present generation of footballers in Pietermaritzburg. It is sad that in a period when we expected things to be a little better for football, the present administra

tion is letting us down. Why is Msunduzi Municipality neglecting the mainte nance of soccer fields in this town? The situation is embarrassing and disappointing considering that the sport is played mainly by poor Black boys and girls. We have ordinary men and women like Malombo Ng congo of Central Brothers making lots of sacrifices. Presently, we are experiencing lots of bad behaviour in our youth. Drug and alcohol abuse, early sexual in volvement, criminal activities are some of the things tearing our communities apart. People like Ngcongo spend their family’s monies to run football clubs and yet the ‘people’s’ municipality cannot even cut grass and mark the fields. We have regressed 100 years back. I have observed that many SAB clubs are struggling for transport, equipment like balls, bootsandevenshinpads.Itiscrazy, forinstance, that a club in Imbali stage 1 receive no support from the community. This is a township that has produced many people in top positions in public and private sectors. Why do Black people find it difficult to give back to their com

munities? It is important that we do some introspec tion and correct the wrongs. Sports Minister Fikile Mbalula made lots of noise about our footballers last week. How do our players become better on unmarked fields? How do players remain motivated in situations where coaching is poor, there are no proper training facilities, no equip ment and no food at home? It is easy to criticise when your children are enjoying the best sports facilities in private schools. I appeal to our honourable mayor and his team to attend to the poor state of football facilities. The government cannot do everything. It is also im portant that we all make some contributions towards academic and sports education of the youth. Unzima lo mthwalo!

Birkett-Zondi pair fancied for glory >> Dusi greats tip the duo to walk away with the first prize for the 2014 water race

F

ormer Dusi champions Martin Dreyer and Ant Stott have both tipped the crew of Andy Birkett and Sbonelo Zondi to win this year’s Dusi Canoe marathon that starts at Camps Drift today. “Onpaperthereisonecrewtowinitthisyear – Andy Birkett and Sbonelo Zondi,” said Stott, normally diplomatic and non-committal. “Butremember, thisistheDusiandanything can happen,” he added. Stott, who has won the Dusi four times, says that a low river may result in a closer margin between Birkett and Zondi and their strongest rivals, Lance Kime and Thulani Mbanjwa, but that the superior paddling power of Birkett and Zondi should have too much power and will prevail in the end. Anticipating a close race, Stott said that if thetwoprotagonistsweresidebysideattheend of the second stage, the race might come down to which crew gets onto the narrow path going up the Burma Road portage first. Dreyer, a seven times winner of the Dusi, also shortlisted the 2014 winner to the same two crews, but had Birkett and Zondi as his favourites to win because they had formed a closer bond during their preparations for the race. “Sbonelo and Andy are super-focused right now because they have eaten, slept and drunk the Dusi together all summer. They have been living in each other’s bags, and that counts in the end,” said Dreyer. “As a crew, they are paddling really strongly and we all know how well Andy has been paddling this past year, with his win at the U23 world marathon championships,” he added. “Remember how he took on Hank McGregor at the recent N3TC Drak Challenge and won? It has been difficult for Lance and Bungee (Mbanjwa) with Lance having to head back to Stellenbosch University, but they will be right there. It will be a two horse race, “ said Dreyer.

Dusi icons Ant Stott and Martin Dreyer have both tipped the crew of Sbonelo Zondi (back) and Andy Birkett to win the 2014 Dusi Canoe Marathon. He added that the powerful surfski duo of marathon world champ Hank McGregor and his Cape partner Jasper Mocké would come into the race more and more as it progressed, but felt they wouldn’t be within striking distance come the third and final stage into Blue Lagoon. Stott speculated that a few of the lesser fancied crews could finish in the top five, and will be poised to capitalise on the smallest mistake by anyone of the top three fancied crews.

“Watch out for Ben Biggs and Karl Folscher,” said Stott. “Jakub Adam and Cam Schoeman are also going to have a good race,” he predicted. “Keep an eye on Kwanda Mhlope and Zonele Nzuza, and Shaun Griffin and Jacques Theron will also be there or thereabouts,” he added. The Dusi Canoe Marathon 2014 will end in Durban on Saturday . More information can be found at www.dusi.co.za –Supplied

Unknown development paddlers are also potential Dusi winners DESPITE much attention on the household names during the annual Dusi Canoe Marathon which starts today at 6am at Camps Drift, unknown development paddlers are also potential winners. The South African Maritime SafetyAuthority(Samsa)Changea Life campaign has entered eight young canoeists from the Inanda area for the popular Pietermaritzburg to Durban canoe event. All the Inanda-based development paddlers are trained by Dusi icon Martin Dreyer. Samsa, throughitscorporatesocialinvestment programme, identified a squad of over 60 youngsters who started their basic introduction to

canoeing, together with swimming and safety training, about three months ago. The squad includes Sphamandla Shozi, Patrick Canham, Sifundo Gumede, Mhlonishwa Gcwensa, Mmeli Ndimande, Nduduzo Shozi, Mhlonishwa Hlongwane and Nqobile Makhanya. Hlongwanemaybetakenasthe only seasoned Dusi paddler, coming in 27th position in last year’s K1 Dusi. He is expected to provide leadership to the group. Sobuntu Tilayi, chief operating officer for Samsa, said: “One of our mandates is to promote water safety. Safety education is a key part of our functions

and the canoe race fits well with this new project. “We not only want to make canoeing accessible to all, but want to encourage more and more young people to be active, and follow a healthy lifestyle.” “Five schools initially took part in the programme, with immense interest shown from all. Some could not even swim but were prepared to battle rapids and take to the water,” he said. Today they have four crews. Mapitso Dlepu, the header of Samsa corporate social investment programme said the Change A Life programme also extended to supporting the athletes in other areas

of their lives, from education to nutrition to getting their drivers licences, and learning key life skills. The Samsa Change A Life programme was more about personal growth and development than simply canoeing. Dreyer added: “All these kids are self-motivated. They want to try their best. They understand the nature of the challenge and they are doing it purely to achieve a goal that they have set themselves, not to impress anyone else.” The Dusi Canoe Marathon will end on Saturday, February 15, at Durban’s Blue Lagoon. -Jerry Barnes

Another PSL coach bites the dust

A

S it was predicted many months ago, Lamontville Golden Arrows head coach Mark Harrison has gone. This week, Abafana Bes’thende chairperson Mato Madlalaasked Harrison to step aside after a dismal run in the league. The coastal outfit so far played seven games without a win under Harrison’s leadership, and the bosses founditdifficulttoswallow.Arrowsspokesman Vusumuzi Vilakazi confirmed to Echo that Harrison and his son, goalkeeper Ryan Harrison are now history. “I can confirm that there was a board meeting with the coach and to my understanding, it is now official that he is no longer with the club,” said Vilakazi. Appointed as caretaker coaches are former Bafana Bafana striker Shaun Bartlet and retired Arrows midfielder Bheka Phakathi, who were both assisting the axed coach. Vilakazi says Bartlet and Phakathi are likely to do well because they are not new to the Lamontville based outfit. “Ipersonallydon’tthinkthetwocoacheswill find it difficult to fine tune the side. Bartlet has been an assistant coach for two and half sea-

sons and also served under a couple of head coaches.Hefullyunderstandsthewayweoperate and our players. Phakathi is like a family member. He was born in Lamontville, grew up in the team and started his professional career withArrows.Heunderstandseverythingabout the culture of the team. We wish them good luck and we hope both coaches will be able to turn our fortunes,”said Vilakazi. Other coaches who have either been fired or resigned include Orlando Pirates’ Roger De Sa, Muhsin Ertugral from Ajax Cape Town, Maritzburg Uniteds’ Clinton Larsen, Ernst Middendorp from Maritzburg United, Seve Komphela from Free State Stars and Manqoba Mngqithi from Golden Arrows. On Saturday, Arrows will face Free State Stars away at Goble Park stadium at 3.30pm. rban side, Amazulu will host Bidvest Wits at KwaMashu’s Princess Magogo stadium at 6pm. On Sunday, the local PSL outfit will play Mpumalanga Black Aces away at Mbombela stadium. –Jerry Barnes
