OST cutting measures that were implemented in governmental departments by provincial treasury three years ago have finally yielded good results, with the province having been able to save R729 million for the 2014/15 financial year. Speaking at the budget speech, KwaZuluNatal Finance MEC Ina Cronje said that this budget, coming from provincial treasury’s own revenue, will help with additional funding for various projects. Among many projects that are to be implemented with this budget, R5 million has been set aside to tighten security measures as the country gears up for the elections. Another R5 million has been set aside to assist theMsunduziMunicipalitywiththeelecrification of informal settlements in order to combat illegal connections. Cronje emphasised that the importance of police visibility at policing stations during this year’s elections to ensure peace. Speaking at a media briefing, provincial treasury head Smiso Magagula said: “While this is a good success story for our province, the economic situation globally has not fully recovered following the recession period in 2009. “Wehadtocutdownby7.5%ondepartmental goods and services. Our deficit has been wiped out since 2010. Having achieved this goal shows elements of good governance.” In addition, the department is set to implement an electronic procurement tool by next month, inabidtomodernisethesupplychainand to eliminate the human component. This electronic tool will enable those interested in tenders from all the municipalities in the province to bid live online. “Theprocedurewillbetransparent, andthere will be no instances where officials change figuressothattheirfriendswinbids.Thistoolwill also allow us to know how much we spend, on what and who we buy it from”, said Magagula. Cronje raised concerns that although the province has turned around its finances, there is still a problem of bad debt, with the country being among big spenders. “Poor personal financial planning and unhealthy spending habits add an additional burden to government, with an increasing number of grant dependants who cannot retire without help from the state,” she said.

NOMPENDULO NGUBANE

>>nompendulo.ngubane@myecho.co.za HAVING been the lead singer of Loxion Jam for many years now, Machibisa’s Sazi Cele has decided to go solo in a bid to pursue his signature music sound. Cele is currently brewing his 13 track album in studio which will be out this month. He said his music is urban dance, as it contains different elements of music. The 38 yearold musician developed his love for music at the age of 15. He used to sing and perform at church with a group called Go Tell Them. Seeing that his life was about music, he took it seriously by studying music at the Durban University of Technology (Dut). “After finishing my studies, I went to London where I studied music technology. I stayed in London for eight years, came back and that was when the group Loxion Jam was born. We released an album that opened doors for us. We toured countries like Spain and Hong Kong. One of our members passed on and it was just the two of us left. I have decided to pick up my instruments and continue with the journey of music. This album has been inspired by love. It’s not love of a man and a woman, but love in general. “There are tracks that are so close to my heart, like ‘Ngicela inumber’ and ‘Nginentombi yami’. There is a story behind the ‘Ngicela inumber’ track. We were in Pretoria when the song came into my mind. I was listening to a guy who was complaining that girls don’t like him. “He went on to say that girls were attracted to guys with money. That is why the album is titled ‘Ngicela inumber’. “At that time, I had my guitar with me and the song just came into mind. Everybody will enjoy the album, it’s made out of love and it has a flavour for every age group,” said Cele.

GOSPEL singers and instrumentalists around the province, including Pietermaritzburg, are invited to come and audition at the Durban Playhouse today and tomorrow. The auditions are hosted by Tim Omotso Global Outreach (Togo), a non-profit organisation led by Tim Omotso. The auditions will take place in four major cities - Durban, Cape Town, Port Elizabeth and Johannesburg. They are held to scout for the most skilled, talented and inspired gospel singers and instrumentalists around the country, said Togo’s media liaison officer Lungile Ndlovu. Shesaidtheauditionswillnotbeonlyshowcasing gospel music as a genre, but will also attract a pool of young groupings that will minister the word of God through jazz, iscathamiya, umbhaqanga, opera, reggae, acapella and afro pop. “The event is designed to scout and dig out hidden gold within the youth of South Africa. This initiative is also aimed at attracting a calibreofsingersthatwillbetrainedtobecome professional singers. “The auditions were established in 2007 and they have given birth and seen the rise of the multi international award winning gospel group, Simply Chrysolite. The group has, to date, won seven awards, five of which are international within the space of four years. “We are asking all gospel music singers and instrumentalists to come and audition. We are inviting people from all over the province to come in their numbers. “The auditions will run from 9 am to 5 pm today up until Friday,” said Ndlovu. I

DO not know whether to be sad or expect another instalmentoffantasticentertainmentfromMzansi Magic’s treat that is the Isibaya drama series. When I heard that Isibaya was grinding to halt this month, I quietly bemoaned the end of real, quality entertainment. But then I did not know whether to be happy or lukewarm when a Sunday newspaper reported that in fact, Isibaya is coming back and the story will continue. I am always not sure of part twos, but part one did strike the right chord with its local actors and actresses who are not only handsome and beautiful peoplewhoareappealingtowatchonscreen, butalso exude sexuality. It is very difficult for me to say which character

impresses me the most in that wonderful cast of Isibaya. I find it easy to excuse those characters who speak like they are reading because even that becomes a kind of trait of who they are. Besides, their charisma undermines their flows in ways that are not familiar, (or have I become more tolerant with age?). Mkabayiandherbrother,MpiyakheZungu, therich taxi owners, (the latter of which is bewitched and turned into a mkhovu, that is, a person who serves the interests of those that have bewitched him), carry the story so well. I do not have words to describe the amount of hard work that went into achieving what I see – what a treat! To use an old friend’s favourite phrase, ‘they are so good, they are good.’ Taxi violence and the use of muti to manipulate and dominate others are pertinent themes that are a part of our everyday lives. Although taxi feuds have gone down nowadays,

thanks to the hard work of the democratic govern ment engaging continuously with the taxi industry leadership, it is not unfamiliar to hear of families turned into fatherless or brotherless units just because of contests for business and control of routes in the taxi industry. The character of Samson Ndlovu, who is the rival rich taxi owner whose priority in life is to bewitch and dominate the Zungu family, is one of the best charac ters in that cast of Isibaya. Obviously, everyone knows someone who has been allegedly turned into a mkhovu like Mpiyakhe or who turns others into a mkhovu (or a Mgijimi – a new name given to Mpiyakhe as Samson’s umkhovu, which means the one who runs errands). Thissubthemeofthestoryremindsmehowmuch the modern world has deplored and actually fought against slavery and human trafficking. But through muti (i.e. something that is hard to prove in a court of law unless there is hard evidence like a murder scene, weapons and witnesses), the human race still sees people using other people for free labour, let alone those who are killed for body parts to be used for muti. We speak in our little corners about such disgusting and inhuman acts. Yet there is little or nothing we can do about them. The perpe trators are known untouchables who live amongst us likethereisnothingwrongwiththeirgrossandsatanic conduct. Indeed, I will miss a lot of characters in Isibaya part one, if they go. The characters of Iris, Jackson and Jabulani were the epitome of opulence, sophistica tion, insensitivity, greed and arrogance of the present day elite. Needless to say, corruption, mutual abuse, deceit and the ultimate betrayal are the order of the day in Isibaya, as they are in the real world of today. And of course Iris plays the role of a step mother falling in love with her step son, Jabulani, in ways that defy conventional thinking and would upset any conservative viewer in this age of ‘Ben 10.’ As a story, I actually enjoyed the character of Iris, the lonely, naughty, dramatic and explosive beautiful one. In the story, her presence is recognised openly by her husband, the somewhat unconscious and sick Mpiyakhe who is lying in his hospital bed after escap ingfromhismkhovuordeal.Curiously,Mpiyakheisless responsivetohisothertwopiusandtypicaltraditional women who share Mpiyakhe with Iris in a polygamous marriage situation when they come to see him in hospital on a separate encounter. IknowthatwehavenothadanicestorylikeIsibaya in a long time on national television, but the presence of Mzansi Magic, an MNet channel, promises to feed us with offerings that are not only South African, but truly entertaining. Like etv’s ekasi stories, Mzansi Magic is continually flooding our television screens withshortstorieswhichwetrulyidentifywithandlike, and many of them are made by people we actually brush shoulders with. MypartnerandIenjoyedthecreativeshootingand exotic scenes of Msinga. We recognised and identified with the context which glorifies our province of Kwa ZuluNatal as a tourism destination. HereistotheendofIsibayapartoneanditsintrigu ingcelebrationofrichblackswhorosethroughthetaxi industry in which modern values collide with tradi tional values in a superb story that mirrors the life we know and experience in ways that we cannot deny. Here is to the end of the first part of a wonderful artistic experience. I have great respect for the character of Mpiyakhe, his traditional singing and extraordinary talent as an actor. I actually wish to take this opportunity to say that I take my hat off to Mzansi Magic, the Isibaya producers, writers, and the entire cast for really enter taining us poor South African viewers who are forever hungry for good stories and good acting.

local administrators is the backbone of the South African Indoor Football Association(Saifa),butoperatingbehindthe scenes is where he prefers to be. The former Maritzburg FA referee, administrator and hard working current Saifa secretary,Ebrahim“Ebby”Hossen, thisweekspoke to Echo. Echo Reporter (ER): Sir, thank you again for your time, but please tell us - who exacty is Ebby? EbrahimHossen(EH):Iamagenuinelocal product.IwasbornandraisedinPietermaritzburg.IstartedmyearlyschoolingatatNizamia Primary Islamic School and later went to M.L.Sultan High School. I stay in Cinderella Park in Eastwood. ER: Did you play any sport during your school days? EH:Yes,Iwasanactivefootballerandcricketer. I also participated in other codes of sport such as basketball, volleyball and athletics. ER: Are there any awards you received during your active days? EH:Yes, I received Natal and Northern Natal colours for cricket. I also represented the old Maritzburg FA in soccer and cricket for the Maritzburg Cricket Association. ER: Tell me a bit about your career at club level. EH: I played or joined one of the oldest and popular local clubs in MFA - Young Natalians - in 1986 and played both football and cricket for the club. ER:Besidesplaying, youalsobecameawell known official in local circles? EH: Yes, I became a referee and also actively involved with the administration, mainly working as a records cleck. ER: I personally know that you became involved in administration when you were still very young, where did the influence come from? EH: I was influenced by some of our local and country’s top sport administrators such as Babs Sithapersad, Ismail Bhamjee, Poobie Govindasamy,S olly Moosa, Raj Seeparsad, Lenny Munro, Dino Singh, Bryan Rupram and the late Mr Rajen Jugmohan. Their guidance and teachings have brought me to the level I have achieved thus far. I am grateful to each one of them.

ER: What are you currently doing at Saifa? EH: Officially, I am called the secretary but I also work as chief operations officer. My current tasks is to run a business with good governance, transparency and equality. This also includes the preparation of fixtures, hiring of venues, registration of players, arranging travel and accommodation for teams and officials, appointments of referees and match commissioners, I approach sponsors and enter into contracts with service providers. All this, and I still have to do the general office tasks. ER: What are the main challenges in your job? EH: No job goes without challenges, with some being minor and others that are more challenging that require the support and guidance of all role players. As a team, no challenge is too big to handle. Our major challenge is finance and we are currently seeking corporates to join us as our partners in promoting Futsal from grassroots to the professional level. ER: For the people not familiar with indoor- Futsal, how do you explain it and where do you see it in future. EH: Indoor/ Futsal is a style of football that will allow our football masses to develop skills at an early age. It will help the country to showcase its talent at the various age group competitions that Safa and Saifa have initiated. This type of football is likely to produce better skilled players for all our national teams. I also strongly believe if we are able to secure sponsorship, we could be running our leagues similar to the PSL in the near future. ER: Are you convinced that this type of footeball is now becoming popular around the country? EH: Off course, but we still need more people to join hands like schools and tertiary institutions. We also need ladies teams to come on board and also our regional leagues need to be stronger in all Safa 52 regions. *Saifa/Futsal National League: The local derby between Young Natalians and Maritzburg Spurs will take place Friday (March 14), 7 pm at Carter High School. –Jerry Barnes

For football to grow, mindsets must change TALKING FOOTBALL

THABO DLADLA

T

HE negative effects of apartheid on the minds of Black people will be felt for many years to come. The laws of the country may have changed, but the minds are still chained by the past. Fear is dominating the lives of the majority of our people. Fear to change and fear to be different is holdingthecountryhostage.Footballcannotcontin ue doing things the same way and expect different results. We live in a society that is stuck in the past. Inde pendent and selfreliant individuals become ene mies of people. We are a nation that hates progress. The second and third divisions are not youth leagues. It is wrong to put restrictions on the ages of players in these leagues. A club like Central Brothers, for instance, would love to be promoted to the PSL in future. How is it possible with rules that do not apply to every club in the country? Please, let usnotconfuseamateurfootballwithyouthdevelop ment. It is also not fair on older players who are still keen on playing competitive football. It is these cosmetic changes that are delaying progress. We need to learn that nothing is free in this world. Progress in any field is not dependant on money. One does not need to be rich to excel in football. You need a ball and a bit of space to improve your technical skills. Poorer countries will be fighting to win the World Cup in Brazil in June. Knowledge and high work ethic is more important than money. Anyone can have lots of money but very few can have wisdom. It is easy to steal money for instance while it is impos sible to steal wisdom. Football is not going to grow and improve if the mind sets do not change. How many coaches have been trained by Safa over the past twenty years? It is sad that the majority are still waiting for someone to employ them. We have too many certificated people who do not train or coach anyone. We are a nation that enjoys collecting certificates. Peoplefinditverydifficulttovolunteertheirserv ices. We are failing to understand that South Africa is a third world country. The majority of people live underdespicableconditions.Weplayfootballonvery bad fields. It is not true that we have better football facilities. I see this every weekend in SAB matches. Iftheelitedistrictleagueplaysundersuchconditions, it is difficult to imagine the conditions at lower levels. A lot of opinions have been made about last week’s trashing by Brazil. The reality is that good footballers do not grow on trees. A country that neglectsitsyouthwillneverdominateworldfootball. We must stop being good in suggestions and start doing the work. We need to equip ourselves with knowledge and start giving our children good foot ball education. It is also important that football puts qualified people in positions of authority. This busi ness of putting the wrong candidates or friends in key football positions is killing the sport. Lastly, it is worth repeating that the first teacher of football is a mother and father. Too many South Africans are abdicating their responsibilities. You even see this in education where a child travels many kilometres while the father is a principal in the local school. Safa has come up with a Level D course which is suitable for parent coaches. I would recommend that young fathers and mothers attend this course in order to help your children. People must start talk ing responsibilities otherwise fifty years from now Brazil will be beating us 100. Unzima lo mthwalo!

We are also the very first SA team to win the Caf Champions League and also made it to the finals of the same competition again last season,”said Modisane. Amakhosi’s communications manager, Vina Maphosa, feels his team is on a roll and their opponents may find it difficult to deal with them. “We kicked off our Caf campaign on a positive note. At home or in the PSL we are still leading the pack and are the reigning champions.” he said. Chiefs die-hard and long time follower Sadaam Maake says VV will receive the best present from Amakhosiwhichwillbea“welcombacktotherealworld which is SA.”
