Foreign national killed >> His fiery death is alleged to have been motivated by xenophobia NOKULUNGA NGOBESE AND NOM PENDULO NGUBANE
B
ARELY days after Echo publishedastoryaboutloomingxenophobic attacks at Imbali’s Unit 14 area, a foreign national was burnt to death in the Phase 1 area of France The attack on Assefa Areso (30) is believed to be xenophobic motivated. His body was found charred inside the tuckshop where he worked. His relative, who also called himself Assefa, said that the incident happened on Monday night, but the family only found out about it on Tuesday morning when a customer, who had come in to buy something, made a gruesome discovery. However, Assefa believes that thekillingwasintentionalastherewere traces of petrol outside the front door. He said that his brother had been working at the tuckshop for the past two years. Residents who spoke to Echo said that although xenophobic attacks have become common in the area, no one knows what exactly happened. They said they were all alerted to the attack by the community member who had made the grisly discovery. “This is not the first incident of this nature in the area,” said a resident who did not want to be identified. At Imbali’s Unit 14 area, local tuckshop owners complained that they were losing customers to foreign na-

Ward councillor Bongani Dlomo said: “There have been a lot of xenophobic threats. However, theforeignnationalsdonotplacethemselves in the area. We have spoken about the issue with community members several times. The ones who are complaining are the same people who make extra money by giving them [foreign nationals] space to rent,” he said. Dlomo added that what makes it even more dangerous is that tuckshop owners lock their workers inside the tuckshops when they close their businesses. “This person might have survived, if he was not locked inside,” he said. SAPS spokesperson Captain Thulani Zwane said that an empty, melted plastic container containing fuel was found outside the front door. “The motive for the attack is unknown and no arrests have been made. Police are investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident”. PHOTOS: NOMPENDULO NGUBANE

Speaking to Echo, Zondi said he has been in the taxi industry for 24 years, pointing out that half of that time was spent as the chairperson of the uMgungundlovu region as he had been given three terms in office. “My duty is to make sure thatadministrationisinorder. BythisImeanit’smyresponsibility to talk with the members of associations and executives to make sure that they help their associations. In terms of business, we are aiming to see the taxi industry working jointly with business companies. Here we are talking about oil companies. The taxi industry excels in consuming petrol in this country. We are looking at working together and benefiting from that. We are also looking at expanding the relationship with the Road Accident Fund so that we can intervene by helping our passengers,” said Zondi. He said that they would help them with the claiming

WO prominent local teachers from Edendale in Nhlazatshe who died in a horrific accident on the N2 on their way from Eshowe recently were given a heroes’ sendoff. Allegedly, a taxi crashed into the vehicle in which the two school teachers were travelling in as the driver was trying to re–enter the road after a brief break on the freeway. Musa Rogers Xulu (61) and Thami Ian Mngadi (47), who taught at Ndala High School in Richmond, were praised as talented and dedicated teachers who contributed to keeping the dignity and significance of the teaching pro-
fession alive. Xulu, whose brother Themba Xulu is a renowned city pianist, taught commercial subjects, including accounting, inseveralschools.Heissurvived by his wife, Zama, and five children. Mngadi leaves his parents and four children. The Lay Centre was packed to capacity as Themba Xulu and his classical music ensemble presented moving renditions which added colour to a funeral that celebrated the teaching profession and revived the spirit of pupils, teachers, education officials and community members alike. A representative from the South African Democratic Teachers’ Union (Sadtu) praised the two teachers for their contribution in making the teaching profession a dignified career where teachers are recognised and remunerated appropriately.

Debunking the popular myth about the revival of the ANCYL (PART 2) Mafika Damane Mndebele and Thembinkosi “Guerrilla” Zondi minors live in households without any employed members, and that 28.6% of them do not have sufficient food. These challenges could be viewed as external from the ANC Youth League, but it is from this constituency that the ANCYL largely recruits its membership. The ANC has already identified triple challenges facing our country, which are unemployment, inequality and poverty. If historically, the task of the ANCYL has been to re–inforce the mission of the ANC, then it is in fighting these challengesamongsttheyouththattheANCYL will attract to vote for the ANC. The reality of our country and the stateoftheyouthiswellpaintedbythe National Development Plan; it is a very disturbing and humiliating portrait. It is for these reasons that a call foraradicalchange, foramilitantand radical youth leadership for social transformation will find solace amongst young people. So what was wrong with the Malema Brigade?
Mandela Generation: myth and reality
T
HE modern day challenges confronting young people are better captured by the recent findings released by Statistics South Africa. It indicated that 49% of young people are not employed, that 65.1% of children up to the age of 18 live with families that earn less than R650 per month, that 60.2% of young people ranging between the age of 18 and 25 make up the majority of the so–called Mandela generation. This is the reality as opposed to the myth. The careful reading of the 2011 Census report reveals the reality is that the significant majority of South Africans are under 35 years of age and live in households that receive low–incomes, the majority of whom come from rural areas who do not even have a Grade 12 qualification. In addition to that, the report has unveiled how 35% of South African
The 24th National Congress of the ANCYL made a correct analysis of the challenges faced by our country and thus correctly resolved on a struggle for radical distribution of wealth beneath the soil as echoed by the Freedom Charter. There is no doubt that this clarion call has found support amongst the youth who are at the receiving end of all the challenges faced by our country. Theagitationsloganfor‘economicfreedominourlifetime’,andamore programmatic response to it, makes theProgressiveYouthAllianceingeneral, and specifically the ANCYL, more relevant than ever before. In other words, the ANCYL’s twin tasks are (a) serving as body of opinion within the ANC and reinforcing it throughrallyingyoungpeoplebehind its strategic vision and (b) championing the interest of young people as a way of responding to the already mentioned challenges confronting the youth to strengthened our formations.
OSMANS
However, the ANCYL has been faced with otherwise preventable challenges such as: substitution and the relegation of political logic and robust, but comradely, debates to name–calling; politics of money and greedy (sic); member of other members; ill-discipline, anarchy, factionalism and side–stepping organisational processes with impunity became the norm within the ANCYL. Additionally, the internal challengesoftheANCYLalsoincluded the marginalisation of politically– clear cadres in favour of (politically weak) new members who are easy prey for manipulation. The ANCYL presented itself as an independent opposition from within the ANC and conducted the vicious attack towards or dissolution of those holding different
views. Gate-keeping; divisions; manipulation of membership; patronage political accumulation (ie the use of the organisation to accumulate wealth to overcome personal inconveniences such as unemployment) and doing everything to undermine the ANC and its President, Cde Jacob Zuma destroyed the image of the YL

Local journalist to host sports day in Panorama >> Veteran sports journalist Jerry Barnes is back with a bang
W
ELL–TRAVELLED local veteran sports journalist, Jerry Barnes, will be officially marking his return to Pietermaritzburg by staging a community sports day at the Panorama grounds. After returning to the city after spending eight years with a Johannesburg national newspaper, Barnes saw it fit and proper to announce it to his community, friends, readers and followers. “Today I have a family, a house, a career and have a lot friends around thecity.Theonlypeoplethatmademe a man and a well–known writer, are those in the greater Pietermaritzburg community, my readers and my God. I came back last year, but I was still in and out of Gauteng, sorting out personal matters. I’m now officiallyandpermanentlyback in my hometown. Let’s get the ball rolling again,” said Barnes. A former sportsman himself, Barnes said that the days program will be dominated by sports items, but there will be a fun fair atmosphere for everybody. “The day will also be mixed with a couple of educational speakers. They will be speaking about the dangers of drugs, alcohol, HIV/Aids, careers and sports,” he explained. There will be also a speaker from the local government to explain about the next elections. “Youwillbesurprisedtoknowthat there are people out there who lack basic information about elections – are we doing enough to educate them?” he said. The event is scheduled for 28 September from 8am. Thedaywillkickoffwithafunrun/ walk, 2.5km around the neighbour-

There’s also a ‘local derby’ between youth teams from Panorama Gardens and Panorama Park (the main road separates the teams). Old Timers (O35) will face the Mountain Rise police team. With the event Barnes aims to raise

“I trust that with the support of my community, friends and the councillor and church leaders in my area, we can all make it work,” he said. Barnes’ long cherished dream is to form a sports forum in Eastwood/ Panorama, Civic Association, football, netball and athletics clubs for Eastwood/ Panorama and Glenwood (Ward 34) He says the priority on his list is to start an HIV/Aids centre, a community vegetable garden and a community help centre. “We can fool ourselves by trying to run away from it, but the truth is HIV/Aids is here to stay. If we are not careful and well equipped, the whole nation is going to die. People must get tested, know their status and will live long and safe. We must admit it, we are all affected in one way or another. I just can’t believe it. I am heart broken and it is just unreal that Panorama does not have at least a clinic,” said Barnes. “There’s absolutely nothing for the community. No shops, no garage, no community sports ground, no library, no internet centre/cafe,nosatellitepolicestationand no high school,” he pointed out. He said there was at least a church in the area, adding that he has a lot of things on his mind that he wants to do for his community, especially for the children and old people. “It’s sound crazy, but I will try and do it all, bit by bit. For now, I will keep on dreaming big, very big ! .”

OXING in the country, especially in KwaZulu –Natal will never be the same again. If the provincial boxing Indaba organised by KZN’s Department of Sports and Recreation, jointly with Boxing South Africa (BSA) , is anything to go by, things are going to change for the better and for good. The event was held over three days in Durban and it must be highlighted that the boxing talks were highly ap-
preciated and warmly welcomed by the boxing fraternity. It attracted veteran administrators, match officials, former boxers, trainers and KZN promoters. The three-day session was also blessed by the presence of the newly elected BSA chairperson and welltravelled Ntambi Ravele. The Limpopo-born administrator is also the former Netball SA president and the PSI marketing officer. Raveleagreedthatboxinginthe country was not in good shape and was losing a lot of sponsors and spectators. “We can’t run away from the truth and pretend to be all rosy. Currently there’s nothing good about this type of sport around the country, even at the provincial level and in our townships. “The aim of the Indaba was to put our heads together and give ourselves a platform to share ideas,” said Ravele. She said it was encouraging to see that all the stake– holders
wereprepared, andveryinterestedin sharing ideas. “I was glad to discover that the people who attended were able to freely interact and share the same visionoftakingboxingtothenextlevel.” she continued. Ntambi also strongly indicated that the aim of the provincial Indabas around the country were to get ready for the forthcoming national Indaba. “The main objective is to make sure that all the provinces are well organisedandinoneshoe.TheNational Indaba will be held in Gauteng from 26 to 28 September. We are excited because we can see that the Minister ofSportsandRecreation,FikileMbalula, is not just active but eager to take boxing to the next level.” she explained. Former KZN Boxing Commission president, Arthur Nxumalo, said it was high time they forgot about differences, stopped talking and truly tackle issues. “It’s about time to stop running around or making excuses. Boxing has gone down the drain and we need to bring it back to the province, especially to our communities,” said Nxumalo. – Supplied by Jerry Barnes.
