Devastating discovery by Intuition pupils >>They have found out that they are not registered to write final exams at the end of the year. NOMPENDULO NGUBANE

BOUT300matric pupils enrolled atIntuition Collegeinthecityhaveabandonedclassesafter discovering that they are not registered for the end of year exams. Embarking on strike, the pupils have accused the institution for failure to register them with the Department of Education so they will be ready to sit for the examinations. Pupils who spoke to Echo said the matter came to their attention when they went to check if they were registered with the department. According to a pupil, who refused to be named, only27pupilshavebeenregisteredoutofmorethan 300 that are enrolled at the institution. She said affected pupils are those that are upgrading their matric subjects and those that are doing the whole Grade 12. The pupils say it has been two weeks pupils since they have abandoned classes. “We were told by the department that it was too late to even register. The closing date for registering with the department was on March 15. The information that we got from the department is that it’s already too late to register. We have tried to get the answers from the principal but he has failed to provide us with the answers. “Coming to college is like a waste of time because wewon’tgetourresults.Thishasresultedinastrike and it’s affecting us since there are no classes. Other pupils are asking for their refund, it’s been a wasted year.
“There is no use of writing the exams if we won’t get our results at the end of the year. That clearly indicates that we would have to start afresh next year,” she said. Another pupil said he encountered the same predicament in 2011. He said he did not receive some of his results of the subjects he had studied for. “The school has been giving us problems each and every year. The principal is forever without answers about the situation. I’m confused how such a thing could be happening at the institution,” he said. Intuition principal Sphiwe Ngobese said the problem with the pupils is that they are confusing the stages of the registering process. He said pupils whosubmittedalltheirrequireddocumentsforregistering have nothing to worry about. “ Registering is the last stage of the process and ithasnotreachedthatstage.Theprocessiscurrentlyonthesecondphasewherethedepartmentiscapturing all the data that is required from the documents from the pupils. This process takes four months and I will call them at any time when everything has been done,” said Ngobese. KwaZulu-Natal education spokesperson Muzi Mahlambi said before pupils register with any institution, they must come and check with the department if that institution is operating legally. “Iftheysuspectthatthereisarawdeal, theymust visit our offices so that we can help them. This is a privateinstitutionbutwewelcomethemiftheyhave any queries concerning the institution,” he said.

WITH the recent scourge of rape on elderly women, a group of city poets on Women’s day hosted a campaign at the Thuthuka hall in Edendale, in a bid to discourage this habit among the youth. The campaign was done in partnership with the Department of Social Development, where elderlywomenfromdifferentareasunder the Greater Edendale were taught on ways that they can use to protect themselves. Local poet, Nangu‘Golide’Makhasaidthatthey had to come dressed as elderly women in order to show their support. He said: “We discovered that

our grandmothers are faced with a lot of problems, as some are left to take care of their orphaned grandchildren with only the old age support grant.“Some of them do not even know how to apply for foster care grants for their grandchildren”. He said after seeing media reports on the rape of elderly women, as local poets they decided to present them with whistles on Women’s day, so that they would blow them in cases of danger. “We are against the rape of our grandmothers, and as the youth we cannot sit and do nothing. Whenever they feel that there is some danger, they should blow these whistles to alert community members”,.

USA rappers to perform in the city AN International gospel hip hop en semble will be bringing their Live Wise Die Ready tour to Pietermaritzburg this Friday, August 16. Tasked to promote right living among the youth while providing entertain ment and encouragement for effective use of talents, this musical ensemble could be dubbed as being ‘dope’ by youngsters because of their ‘mad’ rap
ping skills, while getting a thumbs up from parents because of their positive lyrical content. The tour, which has been in effect since the beginning of August, consists of rappers Bizzle and Lavoisier from the USA, Ill Ceey and Abel Chungu from Zimbabwe and South African born, Re cruit and DJ Eazy. They will share the stage with local
Christian artists Africa in Praise, K Da Vine, Eden Myrhh and UGP, among oth ers. The event is being hosted by non profit evangelical organization, African Enterprise, whose youth wing; Foxfires, has had a prominent presence within schools and youth groups for a number of years. The Foxfires and African Enterprise have now embarked on this dynamic

venture as an extension of the work that they have been doing with the youth. “We work with young people on a daily basis and as part of our work, we try our best to be relatable to them, we believe that this gospel hip hop concert does this,” said Foxfire Director, Julian Yon. Mncube poised to thrill music lovers
>> Dave’s Jazz Club hosts Zazi Mncube again this Saturday.
The stage is set once again for contemporary jazz guitarist Zazi Mn cube and his band ZCM at Dave’s Jazz Club at 530 Imbali Unit 15 this Saturday for them to belt out his repertoire and various cover versions. Nonhlanhla Mafare will accompany Mncube with her poetry in some songs. Music lovers will have to pay R50 at the gate in order to see Mncube and his band. Jazz club owner David Nzama said these ses sions have become monthly features at the joint. He said the last gig by Mncube was so successful that he fears late comers might find themselves having no space at the venue this Saturday. “Walala wasa la,” he warned. The show starts at 6p till late. Mncube was recently captured with Mafare doing their thing at Dave’s Jazz Club. PHOTO: DUMISANI ZONDI

Agang SA and EFF offer only charisma >>BHEKISISA MNCUBE writes the political survival of Agang SA and the Economic Freedom Fighters is perilous as both outfits are built around charismatic leadership.
O
NE of three grounds for legitimate rule, according to the Germaneconomist and sociologist Max Weber is grace and charisma. Weber defined charismatic authority as “resting on devotion to the exceptional sanctity, heroism or exemplary character of an individual person, andofthenormativepatterns or order revealed or ordained by him.” Recently two political parties have entered the political landscape of South Africa. These are Agang SA led by academic, Dr Mamphela Aletta Ramphele, and the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) led by the high school graduate, Julius Sello Malema. Both parties exhibit a semblance of charismatic leadership. Both leaders are self-appointed crusaders, who, we are made to believe, will ignite innovation if not a revolution in the political landscape of our country. Both of their short stints at the helm of their political outfits is not based on popular vote but some ‘revelation or heroism’ that drives them to stand up and lead.
An analysis of Dr Ramphele and Malema’s speeches in the last 30 days shows that Ramphele unwittingly considers leadership as ‘a gift of grace’. She seems to believe that she has exemplary leadership qualities that can save South Africa from its “immediate demise”. She thinks herself a prophet ordained by political gods to perform a special duty. On the other hand Malema wittingly emphasises charisma while overwhelmingly leaning towards political demagogue. Both leaders frequently appeal to traditional moral values and to ideas of national grandeur. They both paint a simple black picture of their opposition, namelytheruling ANC.TheANC is viewed as a beast infested with corrupt leaders presiding over an inept administration. The main distinction is that Malema emphasises ideas of persecution and the need for revenge. The unique selling proposition of his political outfit is the nationalisation of the mines and banks without compensation and the expropriation of land, again without compensation.
Under Malema’s tutelage the white population would have to show remorse for its apartheid sins and let go of all “ill-gotten gains”. The black population “will not want,” because Malema’s government will “shepherd” them and provide all luxuries enjoyed currently by a white minority. Malema has also apologised to South Africans for bequeathing them a “rudderless” leader like President Jacob Zuma. By painting a paranoid picture of the ruling party, Malema strengthens hostilities between his infant EFF and the political giant the ANC. Presenting the distorted interpretation of the country’s state of affairs under Zuma makes it easier for EFF while it is clamouring for political space. Dr Ramphele stresses economic values and concern for the welfare of others. She abhors corruption, the lethargy of the public service and political thuggery. Under her tutelage South Africa will be free of corruption, economic growthwillskyrocket, political actors will be upstanding citizens, and we
will all live happily ever after. Ifsheiscorrect, thenCosatugeneral secretary Zwelinzima Vavi’s warning that South Africa was “headed for a predators state where powerful, corrupt and demagogic elite of political hyenas are increasingly using the state to get rich” won’t materialise. This analysis shows the EFF and Agang SA propaganda machinery paint a completely black picture of the ruling party and interprets every action in terms of a paranoid fear of South Africa becoming a wasteland or at worst a pariah state overwhelmed by corruption and other social ills. There are three common traits of parties founded on charismatic leadership. The most obvious is political adventurism of their leaders. Political adventurism in realpolitik means entering a political space with delusion of grandeur without having paid attention to the reality on the ground. Secondly, these parties are always short on concrete policies. Thirdly, the founding leaders remain at the helm long after inaugural conferences and the success or failure of the
party is always predicated on the political fortunes of the founding leaders. Ramphele may honestly want to cleanse our political landscape of corruption and political thuggery, but politically speaking, she is naive to think with a few learned friends living in Midrand /Sandton, she can mastermind an overhaul of SA politics. She will soon learn that the political realm is no realm for saints. Malema on the other hand is a perpetual political demagogue who will do anything to cling to power for personal gain. In conclusion, sociologists suggest that charismatic parties are anathema to democracy and usually lack ideology bases as they are “resting on devotion to the exceptional sanctity, heroismorexemplarycharacterofan individual person”. Both parties do stand a chance to hold at least a seat in the National Assembly come election 2014, but to cause a dent to the ANC’ massive electoral support is improbable. *Bhekisisa Mncube is a Communications Expert at the B74 Media Lab PR Agency and a political analyst at Gagasi 99.5.FM.

Another CD by award winning Intombi kaJehova AS part of celebrating women’s month Intombi KaJehova has released a 13 track CD titled Sizonge’Ezulwini. The 32 yearold, whose real name is Xolile Ndlovu, is a bornandbred Hammarsdale artist who currently re sides in Pietermaritzburg. Ndlovu is not new to the music industry as many would remember her when she walked away with the Best Gospel Maskandi award in 2010, courtesy of SABC Gospel Crown Awards. Speaking to Echo she said her new album, that has been available at the music shops since July 24, is the same gospel maskandi genre music. “What is different about this one is that it ac commodates everybody. It is a versatile album that also accommodates the youth who enjoy dancing, she said. “It was my wish that the CD would have been released by the month of Au gust while we celebrate Women’s Month. This is dedicated to all the wom en. Some of the tracks pass a message to stop women abuse. The first track “Unembeza” is asking why people have
lost conscience. Currently there are lots of incidents that raise eyebrows when you hear or read about them in the newspapers. “Elderly and young chil dren are raped and some of them are murdered. These incidents gave birth to this track. People hear music in taxis, taxi ranks, at the shops and everywhere there is music. Pastors are spreading the wordbypreachingandI’mspreadingthe word by singing and combining it with instruments,” said Ndlovu. Asked what could make people flock to music shops to buy her album, she said the rhythm and versatility. “It relates to everyone, there is even a house track that can’t be ignored when it plays. “With that one, I guarantee your feet won’t stop tap ping. The other thing is that it was made with passion. We are praising God and that alone should be a reason good enough to buy the CD. “I thank all the team members for working hard on this project,” she said. Those who want information about the CD can call managing director Mondli Zondi on 072 234 8803.
Thumbsup to Edendale Hospital

Intombi kaJehova has released her second album titled Sizonge’Ezulwini.
PUBLIC health facilities have been understandably criticised many times in the past. Complaints have ranged from poor hygiene to impatient health care employees. Shortageofmedicines, nursesanddoctors has also been a common challenge in most of South African health care facilities. However, my experience at Edendale Hospital has enlightened me on the hard work that has been done in order to change the image of the hospital. My mother recently went for an operation on her left knee as she is suffering from severe arthritis. The re ception that we received from OOPD staff was of high quality, they are living Batho Pele principles and this should be commended. Keep up the good work! Admission officers and porters showed high level of professionalism and willingness to serve people. Staff at 6B1 ward further ensured that patients get the attention that they deserve and that patients are treated with respect and dignity. May my experience be every person’s experience in this hospital. Congrat ulations should also go to hospital management team for their hardwork. I am confident that the National Health Insurance policy will be successfully imple mented, and that our people will receive high level health care. XOLANI BHENGU Imbali

THE Hexagon Studio Theatre at the University of KwaZulu-Natal Pietermaritzburg campus is playing host to a double bill of postgrad theatre, directed by Jon Branch and Jessica Killerby, at 6 pm on August 15 and 16. Rich,ComingFromYou!isacomedy, written and directed by Branch, in which a man addicted to weed, a woman who hates everything, and a lesbian with a conscience, are tossed together. Add in a botched bank robbery, and you get a whole lot of laughs. Working with a cast of senior students, Branch has created a piece of theatre which draws from many different theatrical styles, to ensure the audience not only laughs but is constantly kept guessing.
Killerby’s Her Cradle is inspired by performance art, and the writer-director is hoping to capture the hearts of the audience through a unique way of narration, using visual performance such as shadow dance, shadow puppetry, employing various elements of music and physical action. Her Cradle is inspired by global warming and environmental issues facing the world today. The age old conflict of mankind versus nature is brought to life in a highly theatrical and dynamically visual show. TicketsforthedoublebillareR30atthedoor only. Bucs meet stronger Zamalek
Young race ambassador
>> Orlando Pirates are ready for the Egyptian soccer giants. JOHANNESBURG — “Bigger, better and stronger,” was how Orlando Pirates coach Roger de Sa on Tuesday described Zamalek, comparing them with fellow Egyptian club Al Ahly. The Buccaneers stunned holders Al Ahly in an African Champions League encounter in Egypt earlier this month with an unprecedented 3-0 away victory. They were hoping to complete a double over the Cairo duo when they meet Zamalek at Orlando Stadium on Saturday night. “Al Ahly have built an illustrious record over the years,” said De Sa, “and they are still a pretty formidable combination in spite of our recent victory over them in Egypt. “But our scouts in Egypt have told us to expect even tougher opposition, against a physically bigger and stronger Zamalek combination, who currently have an edge over their traditional derby rivals. “The videos I have been studying of several of Zamalek’s matches, with my technical staff, only seem to confirm this assessment.” De Sa intended to field a similar line up on Saturday to the one that caught Al Ahly on the wrong foot with an early goal, and the Pirates coach hoped to begin the next match in the same vein. De Sa, however, said burly Zambian international striker Collins Mbesuma had only a 50% chance of reporting fit after incurring an injury in the MTN8 victory over SuperSport

Msizi Ndlovu of Willowfountain receives his goody bag from Mandela Day Marathon race director Les Moeti on Tuesday. Next to Msizi is Tekkie, the race mascot.
LUNGA BIYELA
AFTER his father ran the Mandela Day Marathon last year, Msizi Ndlovu from Willowfountain wanted to be a marshal for this year’s race. The 12-year-old Forest Hill Primary School pupil wrote an e-mail to race organisers asking them if he could take part as a marshal. Unfortunately, he couldn’t be considered as he is not old enough, but organisers were not about to curb his enthusiasm. He will now be one of the race ambassadors. Speaking to The Witness at his school on Tuesday, Msizi said he was happy and couldn’t wait for marathon day. Ndlovu will ride in the lead car, and will also be given VIP status at the finish. “My parents are very proud of me that I am an ambassador,” he said. Msizi, who loves soccer and athletics, hopes to run the marathon one day when he is older.
His father, Mnikwa Ndlovu, said he was happy that his son was given the opportunity. Although Ndlovu won’t be taking part this year due to injury, he will be on the side of the road encouraging other runners. School principal Roslyn Barnes said they were proud of Msizi. “As a school, we are extremely excited that one of our pupils has taken the initiative to request to be a marshal. “ We are extremely proud that our pupils have the potential to expose themselves to outside sources and not limit themselves to the confines of the school,” she told The Witness. The marathon will take place on Sunday, August 25 and will be run from Manayi Hall in Imbali to the Nelson Mandela Capture Site outside Howick. ESPITE an already crowded fixture schedule, Roger de Sa says Orlando Pirates relish the chance to face Kaizer Chiefs over two legs in the MTN8 semi-final. The Buccaneers were drawn against Amakhosi on Monday, with Bidvest Wits facing Platinum Stars in the other fixture. Pirates face a punishing schedule which could stretch to 33 matches before Christmas, if they manage to make the MTN8 Telkom Knockout and CAF Champions League finals. “To play Chiefs is always great, it is a good team to play all the time, it does not matter where or at what stage of the competition,” De Sa says on MTNFootball. “It is always a great match to look forward to, the fans look forward to it; the whole country looks forward to it so why not do it now over two legs? “Youseeallthesupportersmixinginthestandsthesedaysandthe
whole country comes to a standstill, so why not be a part of a game like this?” Both legs will be played next week, with the first legs on August 20 and 21, and the return legs on August 24 and 25. Precise dates and venues are yet to be confirmed. De Sa says the two-legged system has its pros and cons. “It sometimes becomes more difficult than other times to play twolegs.Youhavethechancetorecover and correct things,” he says. “If you do well in the first game then you don’t want a second leg, but if you don’t do too well then you looking forward to that second leg to try to repair a few things.” Meanwhile, Kaizer Chiefs coach Stuart Baxter is hoping the two upcoming matches against rivals Orlando Pirates will produce a lot of goals. The 2013 MTN8 tournament got off to a great start over the past weekend with 15 goals scored in

the four quarterfinal matches, and Amakhosi’s coach tells KickOff.com he is hoping for more of the same. “I hope so. I hope there are a lot of goals,” he says. Having said that, Baxter is well aware that Derbies are closelycontested affairs and often fail to live up to expectations. “Derbiessometimesarenotthe best football games because of the hype, the expectations, the nerves and tension. But I hope the two games will reflect the quality of the players from both teams,” he says. Baxter is also happy to play Pirates in the semis. “Atthisstageofthecompetition it didn’t matter who we got because it could have been difficult with any of the teams. But it is Pirates and it adds something extra – a little bit more spice. “I’msurewewillgivethesupporters a field day, but for me and Roger [De Sa] it means more challenges.”-KickOff.com

ferent tune after sending a written apology. It has been reported that the PSL has admitted they got the wrong end of the stick with regards to Khenyeza’s 12-month ban. “I therefore apologise unreservedly to you and your club for any embarrassment caused. I also apologise for the League issuing a statement referring to the matter.” According to Khenyeza’s lawyer Michael Murphy the rule is clear and the player is eligible to play because the matter is still pending or on-going. Amazayoni’s CEO Mario Morfou says his club would be happy to see the matter sorted out soon “so that the life of the player can carry on. The club also need to carry on without any issues still hanging.” -Jerry Barnes We supply it, we fit it and we guarantee it! We supply it, we fit it and we guarantee it!

>> Case postponement fancied due to uncertainty OCAL PSL goal poacher Mabhuti Khenyeza will know his fate about his career today when the South African Football Association’s Appeals Board hears his case. The Lidgeton-born and well-travelled Khenyeza was handed a 12-month ban by the PSL DC for spitting at linesman Zakhele Siwela when he was still playing Ajax Cape Town last season. He has since joined Mpumalanga Black Aces who were promoted to the PSL fromtheNationalFirstDivisionatthebeginning of the season. The unsporting incident happened in the league match against Mamelodi Sundowns on April 2 at Loftus Stadium. According to the insiders the sitting is likely to be postponed again because the big wigs, especially the PSL rules and constitution “have been caught offside”. Khenyeza’s matter is said to be more complicated for both PSL and the national governing body, Safa. At first the PSL DC ruled that: –Khenyeza be suspended from all football activities under the auspices of the League for a period of 12 months (in terms of Rule 50.14.5 of the Rules of the League). The sentencing and the charge were confirmed by PSL Prosecutor Nandé Becker. After he was sentenced his team at that time,Ajaxfumedandblamedtheleaguefordestroying the player’s career. Later on the Cape Town-side did not renew Khenyeza’s contract and was clubless. The case has taken a new twist since Khenyeza joinedthenewlypromotedMpumalanga Black Aces. Aces management and their legal team claim the players is eligible to play because his matter is still pending. He played during their official first fixture against Kaizer Chiefs a fortnight ago. Chiefs wrote an official protest before the kick off. Also the PSL CEO Brand De Villiers came out with guns blazing at first about Aces’s action, but now he is singing a dif-
