People requiring services from the Department of Labour return home unassisted as the strike is entering its third week now

>> Department of Labour strike enters into its third week NOKULUNGA NGOBESE

NRESOLVED issues within the Department of Labour continue to hamper service delivery, with the strike entering its third week now. While employees returned to work on Friday, the strike resumed again on Monday, with employees demanding the reinstatement of two suspended union leaders. On Tuesday, hundreds of people returned home unassisted as only a few non-union members were working. Concerns raised by employees include allegationsofnepotismandmaladministration against the current manager, poor working conditions and inexperienced junior staff taking senior positions. Employees said that their main concern is that despite writing a letter requesting the provincial department to conduct an investigation, they have not received any feedback. “No one has come back to us with a report on what is happening, instead they are quick to suspend union leaders. Why don’t they suspend the manager while the investigation continues.Wewillnotworkuntilthesuspended union members return,” said an employee who

did not want to be identified. At 9am on Tuesday, the front door was already closed with only a certain number of people allowed in and assisted. On Monday, the offices were closed at 1pm. A disgruntled customer, Sibusiso Makhaye from Impendle, said that he has been in and out of the department’s offices since last week. “IamfedupwiththisincompetenceasIhave been here since Monday last week. Travelling from Impendle to Pietermaritzburg every day is costly and I am running out of money. They should sort out their problems without involving us.” Nokwanda Ngubo from Imbali said: “Some of us have taken leave to stand in the queues, but it does not help.” Provincial Labour spokesperson, Nhlanhla Khumalo, said that the department’s management has put measures in place to minimize the impact which may result from the situation. “We regret the situation, as we have a mandate to render services to our clients. Our officialsinotherofficesaroundtheprovinceare on standby to assist where necessary.” At the time of going to print, National Education, Health and Allied Workers’ Union (Nehawu) secretary Zimasile Giyama could not be reached for comment.

EMS staff want overtime pay NOMPENDULO NGUABNE

E

MERGENCY Medical Services (EMS) employees say they won’t report for work until the Department of Health pays them for their overtime duties. About 40 Emergency Medical Services personnel, servicing Central Base (Greys, Appelsbosch and Howick), have not reported for duty since Monday, said Department of Health corporate communication general manager, Sam Mkhwanazi. Some called in sick and others requested family responsibility leave, he said. “This has posed a threat to service delivery. However the department has swiftly activated contingency plans to ensure that adequate service is provided,” said Mkhwanazi. A staff member who spoke to Echo said that the department has not paid them for overtime duties since May last year. “It’s been a whole year that we have been asking and begging them to sort out the payment issue. We have had meetings and liaised with the management but they have turned a blind eye on the matter. “Since we are not allowed to strike, we have

decided to call in sick. Some of us have taken family responsibility leave. We will only get back to work when they deposit the money in our accounts. “Thelastmeetingwehadwiththeprovincial operations manager, Muzi Mabaso, made no difference. We were angered about what he said and we were pushed to the decision that we have taken. “Mabaso told us that overtime is voluntary. We don’t know what he meant by that. They are sending us messages saying that they will sort out the matter within 14 days. “We are not falling for that. All we want is the money in our accounts,” said the staff member. Another staff member said they have applied for an official strike authorisation. “By the end of today, we will know if we have been granted permission to have an official strike. “We are tired of talking, it’s time the management realise how serious this is. From our side, no one is working and it ends there,” he said. Echo has been informed that the department is asking for back up from the EMS members in Durban.

HE ANC won the general elections for the fifth time, with 249 seats nationally and 52 seats in KwaZulu-Natal. The DA came second at a national and provincial level. It gained itself 89 seats nationally and 10 seats in KZN. South Africa’s baby in politics, the Economic Freedom Party (EFF) was able to gain 25 seats at national level, beating the IFP who gained only 10 seats nationally. The IFP occupied itself a third position in KZN, with nine seats with the EFF winning two seats. ANC provincial secretary, Sihle Zikalala, said the party is happy. “We are happy with the results and the support that people gave to the ANC,” said Zikalala. IFP member of parliament, Narend Singh, said they were disappointed with their results. “I cannot say we did or did not expect the results that we got. We didn’t know what to expect. The resultsmighthavebeeninfluencedbythedivisions within the party. It might have been the lack of resources that the party was faced with while campaigning. “We were competing with the ruling party which had all the resources during their campaign. I must say that we have not been wiped off the map as people are saying,” said Singh. EFF central commander, Hlengiwe Hlophe, said they are very happy with their election results. “We are satisfied with our results at national and provincial level. We are proud to have done so

well. We did exceptionally well at a national level. We always say that we are a political party that represents the poor. The poor people have spoken and we grateful for the support we got. We started with zero funds and a total lack of resources, but we made it,” said Hlophe. Siphesihle Ndlovu (24) said she was expecting the ANC to win for the fifth time. “A lot of people still believe in the party and its history does count. We need the leaders to start delivering to the people,” said Ndlovu. Imbali Unit 3 resident Khaya Mthembu said that he was surprised by the EFF results. WATER BOILERS “They did very 10 litre ...... NQOBILE MTOLO THE Msunduzi Municipality has established a special task team that will deal with electricity theft and the abuse of municipal assets. The mayor of Msunduzi, Chris Ndlela, said that from December 23 last year to 2 May this year, 15 criminal cases have been opened at Pietermaritzburg police stations in connections with these two cases. He said that of 30 suspects, eight have been discovered to be Msunduzi Municipality employees. “Wehavealreadydealtwithfive of these employees internally and will continue in dealing with the remainder. “We want to send a strong message both to our employees, and those criminals out there, that the theft of resources meant to provide essential services to our people will not be stolen in broad daylight and have an expectation that the municipality will stand aside and watch,” said Ndlela. Electricity losses in the Msunduzi area have cost the municipality exorbitant amounts over the years, with just more than R122 million in 2012/2013, R119 million in 2011/2012 financial year and R82 million in 2010/ 2011. Last year, municipal manager Mxolisi Nkosi told the Executive committee that both businesses and households steal electricity and said that a few cases had been forwarded to the Pietermaritzburg High Court.

NURSES PLEDGED TO CONTINUE THEIR SERVICE OF HUMANITY

OSPITALS throughout the world celebrated International Nurses Day 2014 on 12 May; honouring those women and men who have dedicated their lives to caring for others. The date chosen celebrates the birthday of Florence Nightingale, the founder of modern nursing. The theme this year was ‘Nurses - A vital resource for health’, further emphasizing the importance ofnurseswhenitcomestocaringforothersandthehelpthey provide to the sick. At various events held at local hospitals, nurses recited their pledge which they first made when they graduated as nurses. While holding candles, a symbol of the nurses lamp which is represented at all hospitals, nurses pledged to continue their service of humanity and to endeavour to practise their profession with conscience and with dignity.

AND TO ENDEAVOUR TO PRACTISE THEIR PROFESSION WITH CONSCIENCE AND WITH DIGNITY The event held at Midlands Medical Centre was dedicated to Doctor Dunraj Mani, the founding director of the hospital who passed away during the year. Nurses were thanked for their commitment to the profession, applauded for working long hours but most especially for the care they have for each and every patient they tend to during their time of illness. UMgungundlovu District Municipal Mayor, Yusef Bhamjee, was present at the Netcare St Annes event where

he encouraged nurses to continue learning the new developments of medicine, emphasizing that education is key regardless of how long they have been in service for. “Nurses are a universal symbol of compassion and are more often than not the first point of care for patients in need. However, around the world and particularly in SouthAfrica, theworkofnurses remains greatly underestimated and undervalued,” said Shannon Nell, director of nursing and nursing education at Netcare.

THE Msunduzi Hospice Association recently hosted the provincial launch of the Care and Support for Improved Patient Outcomes (CASIPO) programme, which aims to expand and enhance palliative care. CASIPO’s chief of party, Andre’ Wagner, said that they were grateful to the Department of Health for making Hospice a strategic partner and enabling them to develop and emphasize the important of palliative care in South Africa. The idea behind the five year programme, which began in other provinces last year, is to integrate palliative health care into government policies and to get it on the same level of importance as primary health care. “We are excited to be a part of the dramatic changes to improve health care in South Africa, andarecommittedtosupporttheSouthAfrican government,” said Wagner. He added that CASIPO is not changing the ways and methods of what palliative health

careiscurrently, butmerelyenhancingthecare that patients receive. “Our primary focus still remains service delivery.” Wagner revealed that not even one percent of Hospice patients are treated in-house; almost all patients are treated in their homes by caregivers and nurses who go out to visit and care for them, which is what palliative health care training is so important. “With CASIPO we want to change the delivery of health care in South Africa, we want to build capacity and development of palliative care and get training included at an undergraduate level of studies as well as postgraduate. “We want to improve on the retentions and referrals systems to ensure that no patient gets lost in the system,” said Wagner. Warren Oxford-Huggett, Msunduzi Hospice Chief Executive Officer (CEO), also celebrated the nurses who work for Hospice and the nurses in the hospitals that they deal with as part of their celebrations for International Nurses Day.

The School won the national steel drum competition for several years running and was a fixture at the Comrades Marathon where they played at the Nedbank Green Mile. Unfortunately, a decision had to be taken a few years ago to cut back on costs as the tuition and hiring of steel drums was proving too expensive. The school did not own its own steel drums and had to make use of an outside steel drum expert to bring his own drums. Happily, the school is now able to report that a good set of high-quality steel drums has been sourced in Port Elizabeth, and been purchased. The instruments arrived a few weeks ago. With its own set of steel drums, St. Nicholas is now able to resume its legacy of exceptional steel drum playing. The pupils are still re-learning the art so at this year’s Nedbank Green Mile the trusty marimbas will once again be on display.

NICOLE JOHN EASTWOOD Secondary School recently received a generous donation from past pupils Barry Brown and William Nicolson from NMK Forensics in Durban. The sponsorship came following a request from teacher, Brenda Jordan, appealing to past pupils of the school to help improve classrooms. The adopt-a-classroom initiative, implemented by principal Garth Rampaul, would make each teacher responsible for their own classroom and encourage them to get assistance from past pupils and teachers. “In this way, we would each be responsible for securing our classrooms to be done up to assist with our learning and teaching,” said Jordan. Throughtheuseofsocialmedia,Jordanwas

able to secure a generous sponsorship from NMKForensicsasNicholson,beingaco-founder of the company and Brown a forensic analyst, are past pupils of Eastwood Secondary. Brown and Nicholson donated a smart board for interactive learning, a printer, LED television and three laptops to the school. Jordan said that the technology would be installed in her classroom and teachers would have the opportunity to make use of the equipment when needed for their lessons. “We are sure that this equipment will be put to good use and go a long way in making education more efficient and learning more desirable,” said Brown. Past pupils willing to make any contributions towards the adopt-a-classroom initiative are encouraged to contact the school.

OR the past 15 years, Funk! has been one of the most anticipated events on the school performance calendar, and this year’s event at the Hilton College Theatre promises to be no exception. Hosted by The Theatre - St Anne’s College and Hilton College Theatre, Funk! 2014 will be staged on May 17

and May 19 to 21 at 7.30pm nightly. Funk! evolved as an idea to create a dance programme for schools with very specific aims: • to unite schools in working towards a common goal; • to give drama students and their teachers the opportunity to create and rehearse pieces of dance theatre

Moriti is scared that Khomotjo is going to retaliate. SCANDAL Thembeka’s machinations drive Jessica to take drastic measures to keep her hooks in Quinton. Mamokete and Sifiso draw to gether in their grief and concern for Reneilwe’s recovery. Gail arranges for a standin for her show so that she can be with Niki for the termination.

The programme accommodates a range of choreographic and performance possibilities and provides the perfect opportunity for schools to experiment with new forms. Funk! is not a competition, which means that every piece on the programme is valued for its individual form and style and the overall

Fireworks expected in Nedbank Cup final

PHOTO: SUPPLIED

Pirates head coach, Vladimir ‘VV’ Vermezovic has predicted that his team will win this year’s Nedbank Cup.

DURBAN streets around Moses Mabhida Stadium are expected to come to a standstill on Saturday afternoon. The Soweto giants, Orlando Pirates, and the Milpark based outfit Bidvest Wits will lock horns in the mouth-watering Nedbank Cup final at 3pm. Soccer followers are expected not only to see endless fireworks, but to also witness two different formats of soccer. The Clever Boys, under Gavin Hunt, are known to believe in quick, long balls, counter attacks and are dangerous on the flanks and set pieces. On the other side, AmaBhakaBhaka are mainly a skillful team and fond of building their moves from the midfield and from the back. Pirates captain and veteran defender,

Lucky Lekgwathi, this week said his team was planning to go all out against their opponents on Saturday in order to reward their die-hards. “Our aim is honour our followers with a Nedbank Cup. This is our last chance to make them happy after reaching three finals early in the season but failing to bring any trophies home. So this is ours and already our minds are setonit.Wewilldoitforourfollowers around the country,” said Lekgwathi. Pirates head coach, Vladimir ‘VV’Vermezovic, earlierthisweek made a bold statement when he predicted that his team will win this year’s Nedbank Cup. Vermezovic said that a few years ago, when he was coaching Kaizer Chiefs, he was able to win two trophies and can win another one. “Remember the last time I coached a South African team I won two cups. I believe I can still do it. I am also glad that we are currently playing well. When I joined Pirates, I was told that they were able to reach three finals without winning anything, now I am saying this is their fourth final and their great chance to stop that jinx once and for all,” said Vermezovic. Wits star goalkeeper, and former Pirates player Moeneeb Josephs, says his team was again preparing to spoil the party prepared by the Soweto giants. “Remember when we went to the semi-finals against the so called SA’s Glamour Boys, Kaizer Chiefs. We were told that it was the endoftheroadandthedreamfinal between the two Soweto giants was on the cards. AgainonSaturday, wewillgoin as underdogs as usual but celebrate our victory at the end of the day.” * Tickets are available at Computicket and Shoprite Checkers for R60. - Jerry Barnes.

S the local Absa Premiership outfit, Maritzburg United, looking for a new head coach? Is Maritzburg United head coach, Steve Komphela, joining the newly promoted and Cape Town based Chippa United? These are disturbing questions doing the rounds in local circles. Strangely enough, the Team Of Choice management are tight-lipped about the rumours or at the very least are denying any knowledge about it. Last weekend, during United’s last league match against the Absa Premiership Champions Mamelodi Sundowns, Supersport TV commentators continuously mentioned that Komphela was likely to take up the coaching job in Cape Town to guide the Chilly Boys (Chippa United). Team Of Choice spokesman, Brian Zuma, denied any knowledge and strongly shot down the allegations. “Our whole management, including the the chairman, are not aware of any such move.” The Free State born Komphela signed a two-and-a-half-year deal with the Team Of Choice in January, replacing Clinton Larsen whowasfiredfollowingastringofpoorresults. If Komphela joins the Chilly Boys, he will replaceVladislavHericwhosecontractwillnot be renewed when it expires at the end of next month.
