nderperforming schools will not be the only ones to roll up their sleeves and work harder, but also those that did well last year. KwaZulu–Natal Head of the Education Department, Dr. Nkosinathi Sishi, said that schools that performed well will be now facing a targeted 100% pass rate in 2014. Sishi said those schools (that did well) will again be given the task of adopting underperforming schools to mentor them so that they can produce better results. He said the department has decided to increase the average pass mark from 60% to 77,4% for all schools. According to him, schools that perform under 35% will be regarded as schools at risk in terms of the South African Schools Act. “The principals of the schools that find themselves in this category will have to write to the head of the departmentto declareaturnaround strategy and it must be successful. All the schools

that have performed well in the province are now forced to set a new target of a 100% pass rate and 100% exemptions will be now targeted. All subject advisors will also adopt the schools that perform below the 77,4% average pass rate. They will target specific commercial subjects that did not do well .” said Sishi. He said that maths and science are still the main targeted subjects. “The department will continue with that programme and the principals have to mentor each other. Our task of dealing with the schools that lack resources is still a process. We are dealing with supplying resources to the schools that need them. We had 3 200 schools that were supplied with resources. We will continue with supplying the maths and science kits to schools that need them,” he said. School GoverningBody(SGB)chairperson, Reginald Chiliza, said they will have a meeting where they will evaluate the matric results. “We will decided on the role we can play in helping the schools that underperformed. We will do this jointly with the department of education,” said Chiliza.

Echo and Witness readers help find gogo AN 87yearold Imbali gogo, who had been missing for more than three weeks, has been found at Edendale Hospital. Thembi Emily Zondi’s son Sipho, said that his mother had been admitted to the hospital three days after she walked out of her house on December 6, 2013. He said they could not find her on their initial visits to the hospital because she had been admitted under a different name. According to Sipho, his mother may have become disorientated after she left the family home in Wula Road, Imbali, for her usual short walk around the neighbourhood. He said she may have wandered further away to an area where people did not know her. Sipho thanked the good samaritans who took his mother to hospital. “We don’t know how she got there. She is unable to tell us what happened and she is still in the hospital,” he said. Sipho thanked readers of The Witness and Echo, saying it was an observant reader who recognised his mother’s photograph and called to say he was certain she was a patient at the hospital. “We rushed [to the hospital] and found her. I cannot tell you how overjoyed we are as a family. Please tell your read ers that the Zondi family are grateful that they were able to find their mother and grandmother, through an article in the newspaper,” Sipho said. He added that they now have a deeper understanding of the pain a family goes through when a loved one goes missing. “We are overjoyed that our story has had a happy end ing,” Sipho said. — WR.

Youth must look to the Seme legacy to realise their immense potential PHUMLANI MFEKA

was awarded the George William Curtis Medal by Colombia University, which is the institutions highest oratorical honour for his ‘The Regeneration of Africa’ address. Upon his return, there was much abuzzinCapeTown–ablackmanand a Doctor of Law arriving in South Africa on a ship shortly. Indeed, in those days, themainmeansofinternational transport was by sea. And so on hearing of Seme’s imminent arrival, Africans and others flocked to the sea shore to meet this extraordinary South African native. The white establishment had no choice but to accept him for what credentials he bore, because education is about documentary proof and nothing else, not even colour of skin. Thedocumentaryevidenceinhispossession buttressed only one thing – PixleySemewasextremelyintelligent and in him there was already a judge in waiting to serve the community in court. When he was asked to stay in Cape Town and be a judge, Seme responded by saying “I am sorry but a Cape Town judge is the last thing I have in mind for my role. My aim in coming

‘F

ORGOTTEN like an ocean treasure, by minds inflicted with convenient amnesia, the people yearn for unspoken history, whose imminent discovery fills many with terror, like the African Sun rises to shine in its glory, so shall we realise the vision we discover in the ka Seme story’. Pixley ka Isaka Seme was an absolute genius, to the extent that he transcended 100 years into the future and today serves as an inspiration to young Africans globally. When Seme was schooling in Inanda, the American Board of Missionaries soon realised that this little boy was not only intelligent, but also precocious, industrious and well rounded in his God fearing ways, and they subsequently arranged for him to go to the Mount Hermon School in Massachusetts in the USA. This is where the giant that lay within young Seme was awakened. He travelled a number of times in his efforts to study further, and thus spent a considerable amount of time in England. In the United States, he

back to Africa was to get a reconnection with the burial place of my umbilical cord”. He saw the unity of Africans as a solution to this exclusion of natives in the political, economic and social affairs of their own land, and thus embarked on a national campaign where he effectively mobilised traditional leaders, African academics, intellectuals and professionals around this idea of his of forming a South African Native National Congress. The 31–year–old Seme’s tour-de-force in succeeding to unite under one roof all the tribes of Southern Africa: Zulu, Tonga, Thembu, Pedi, Swazi etc, who agreed with him, that the anti–tribal and unifying Congress should be formed and we know for certain that Seme was doing somethingthatnootherhumanbeing before had done in a colonial South Africa. Pixley then decides to appeal to someoneandsays:“Uncle,I’mculturally still too young to lead these nations as president and the Zulu culture anyway demands that the hunter boy must hand over his first passerine kill to seniors (“Inyoni

ishayelwa abakhulu”) and I have got this bird in the hand called the South African Native National Congress for you, uncle”. What we as young Africans in South Africa today must learn from thispartofthePixleySemestory, firstly, is the reality that quality education plays a fundamental role in the life of young Africans that intend on realising their full potential. We also learn from Seme’s most significant achievement, that the unity of Africans has the potential to achieve everything. His refusal to be a judge in a system that deliberately economically marginalises his own people, yet creates an exception for him in those years, elucidates his principled posture which we certainly, as young Africans, must emulate. Pixley ka Seme was young when he founded the ANC, however he exhibits impeccable humility and selflessnessinthewakeofmonumental power, by his gesture to his uncle John Langalibalele Dube to be founding president instead of him. Highly educated as he was, he was able to maintain his respect for his culture, his people and elders for he under-

stood very clearly that self-determination is married with self-knowledge. The immense potential among the youth of South Africa will only be realised through quality education and economic liberation. The two are intertwined, interdependent and can never be separated! The plight of young Africans in South Africa calls for urgent and radical action that will see Africans own, manage and control the economy of their native land. This and more can be achieved if only we, the youth of this country, could follow in the footsteps of our forefathers who gathered in 1912 to put aside our differences and unite under the banner of complete liberation, which is centered on economic freedom. As the youth we are left with the task of ensuring that a completely liberatedAfricanpeopleasenvisagedby Seme, and others after him, becomes a reality in our lifetime. We all need to simply declare that ‘We are Africans, and we set our pride in our race against a hostile public opinion. Lala ngoxolo Sinono, isikhathi sokuthi kuhlakule thina sesifikile!

Nabazali kufanele babambe iqhaza ekufundiseni ingane ukuthi kufanele iziphathe kanjani empilweni jikelele ngoba kuzofika isikhathi lapho izobashiya othisha isiya emhlabeni, isiyobhekana nezinselelo zempilo nekusasa.” Ube esexwayisa abazali ngokuthi baqikelele ukuthi bathengela izinganeizimpahlazesikole, bakugweme ukuthengela izingane izinto ezizozenza zizibone zingcono kunezinye, ikakhulukazi omakhalekhukhwini ababizayo. GONYAKA odlule kunozakwethuobhalengombulalazwe othandwa ngabantu abaningi ngisho nezingane imbala ezingakazi lutho ngezothando. Ngokwazi ukuthi imiqondo yabaningi yayizogijimela ekucabangeni ngengculazi, washeshe wakucacisa ukuthi ukhuluma ngomakhalekhukhwini osukhiphe imiphefumulo eminingi. UMnu.AlbertShabanguosebenza omnyangweni we-marketing emaphephandabeni eFever, wathi okubuhlungu ngalo mbulali ongumakhalekhukhwini, ukuthi akafikanga engumbulali kodwa yithina bantu esimenza umbulali. Lo mbono kazakwethu ngiwukhumbule ngeSonto ngilalele uMnu. Lucky Luthuli onguthishanhloko eMlazi Comtech exwayisa abazali ngokuthanda izingane zabo ngokwedlulele. UMlazi Comtech unendawo yokuhlala abafundi (boarding school). Uthe abazali kufanele bazi ukuthi

ngoba kubangwa umakhalekhukhwini, noma usuntshontshiwe. Uma kukhulunywa ngomakhalekhukhwini abaphathwa ngabanye abafundi, akukhulunywa ngalabo makhalekhukhwini abashibhile, okuthiwa ngoshibhulayini (cheap line), kukhulunywa ngezinkunzimalanga eziphethe zonke izindaba zomhlaba lezi. Abaningi balabo makhalekhukhwini, balayishe wonke amanyalaanyantisaumzimba.Ezinyeizingane azilali ebusuku zingcofana nalabo makhalekhukhwini, umzali aze acabange ukuthi zenza umsebenzi wesikole kanti zibukana namanyala. Omunyeumzaliubuzeukuthiuma izingane kungafanele zibe nomakhalekhukhwini, bazoxhumana kanjani nazo uma kunesidingo. UMadlanduna uthe abazali abawafundayo amafomu abathunyelwa wona uma izingane zabo sezemukelwe, bayazi ukuthi ibhaliwe inombolo yocingo yasesikoleni okufanele bayishayele uma kunesidingo.

Sithandazela ukuthi kulo nyaka zingabi khona izigameko zokubulala kwezingane ezikoleni kubangwa omakhalekhukhwini, nokubulalana nje jikelele. Kakadeniisikhalisifunaniesikoleni bakithi? Umswenko ufunani esikoleni? Yikho konke lokhu okwenza sivumelane noMadlanduna ukuthi abazali kufanele babambe iqhaza ekwaluseni izingane. Uma umzali engezukuyithengela ingane izimpahla ezibizayo, izothi izithathephi uma isibuya nazo ekhaya? Uma kungezukuphela isikhathi eside engayivakashelanga esikoleni, noma azumise afike ingazi, abheke ipotimende layo nalapho igcine khona izimpahla zayo, asikholwa ukuthi kungaba lula ukuthi kube khona okubheke eceleni. Uma izingane zilingana esikoleni, ingekho ezibona ingcono kunenye, kungancipha ukuklwebhana okungenamsebenzi.

Iyancomeka indlela abafundi bakamatikuletsheni bango 2013 abaphase ngayo. Nanxa kukhona ochwepheshe abahlaba okuthile ngezinga le mfundo, awugwemeki umbuzo othi: “Yini eyenza kube nomsindo ongaka uma abamnyama abebecindezelwe ngesikhathi sobandlululo sebekhipha amangwevu?” Okudinga ukushayelwa ihlombe elikhulu, ukuthi kunabafundi basemakhaya ezikoleni ezingenazo izinsiza-kufunda ezitholakala kwezisemadolobheni kodwa baphase ngamalengiso. Laba bafundi babhale amaphephaafanayonalawoabhalwengezinye izinhlanga kodwa babashaya emakhanda. Akusimangalisi uma lesi simo singemukeleki kalula kwabanye, ikakhulukazi izinhlangano eziphikisayo. Kodwa-ke vele phela umsebenzi wazo UKUPHIKISA. Kubafundi abangaphumelelanga, sithi basenalo elinye ithuba lokwenza ngcono bavuke bazithathe.

KUKHULU ngosiko lokusoka kwezinsizwa nokuhlolwa kwezintombi ukuba msulwa komzimba, umqondo nokwenza komuntu ophilayo phakathi kwabanye abantu. Lokhu kucace kahle kwathi bha emcimbini obuseKokstad obuhanjelweuHlangaloMhlabathi,iNgonyama uGoodwill Zwelithini, muva nje, lapho ehlabise khona ngenkomo izinsizwa ezevile ekhulwini ebezisoka ngendlela yesintu kodwa kusetshenziswa imithi nodokotela besimanje. ISilo samaBandla siyincome kakhulu iminyango kahulumeni wesiwundazwe okungowezokuBusa ngokuBambisana neziNdaba zoMdabu, ubambisene nowezeMpilo, kanye nowezokuThuthukiswa koMphakathi nempumelelo yalolu hlelo. Sithe kuyamjabulisa ukuthi emuva kweminyaka emithathu ahlaba ikhwela lokuthi kubuyiswe usiko lokusokwa kwabafana ngendlela engenabo ubungozi, indawo yaseKokstad, engaphansi kweHarry Gwala district, isikwazile ukwenza lokho ukulwa nokufa kwabantu njengoba bebhubhiswa igciwane le HIV neAids. Abasokiwe bebembhandakanya izinsizwa zabeSotho namaXhosa, njengoba indawo yaseKokstad neyaseMzimkhulu isasuswa uhulumeni wentando yeningi ngaphansi kwesifundazwe saseEastern Cape, yafakwa ngaphansi kwe-KwaZuluNatali. ISilo sithe ngonyaka ka-2009 sanxusa ukuba libuyiswe lolu siko olwalumiswe iLembe eleqa amanye amalembe ngokukhalipha, iNkosi enkulu yamaZulu, uShaka, okwesikhashana. “Intuthukoibakhonaumaizinhlaka ezahlukahlukene zikahulumeni zisebenzisana. Okusho ukuthi kanti ngibuyise ubungcwele, ukuze kugcineke ubungcwele bomphambili. Ngikhumbula ukuthi ngonyaka ka2010 ngazithola sengimi neEmbassy yamaJuda esibayeni, eNyokeni, sigubha umkhosi woselo, lapho ayethi, ‘keep it up your majesty, we are behind you,’ ngoba vele kwakuyisikolethuemanduloukuthilokhuakwenzeke kubantu besilisa,” ichaza iNgonyama.

VOX POP Thandoluhle Ngcobo “Vavi was not clever by declining the position that was given to him by Mantashe. By him refusing, it shows that there are divisions in the alliance. We are heading for the elections this year and the least he could have done was to accept the position and be in parliament”.

Ube esebonga abaholi bezwekazi lase-Afrika be-African Union (AU), kanyenabeUnitedNations(UN),ngokumkhuthaza ukuba aqhubekele phambili nokugqugquzela lolu siko lwesintu. Engani ukusoka kunomthelela omuhle ekwenzeni ukuthi igciwane lesandulela ngculaza lingabhebhetheki ngokushesha kakhulu, ikakhulukazi kubantu besilisa. Echaza okwenza iLembe lilumise lolu siko okwesikhashana, uNgangezwelakhe othe uyiNkosi yesishiyagalombili emva kweLembe, uthe, “Lalingaphambukile iLembe

Lona lalibusa ngesikhathi lapho izinto zazihamba ngokushesha ngoba lalithunywe uNkulunkulu ukuzokwakha uhlanga olulodwa lwezizwe lulenze lube lunye. “Akusho-ke ukuthi ingculaza ngeke usayithola ngoba ususokile. Akusho futhi ukuthi kumele nidelele emakhaya, nidle utshwala nidakwe nenze noma ikanjani, nidlwengule abantu besifazane. Ngizovuselela ubuntu la. Ngokubuyisa lolu siko ngangingasho ukuthi izingane aziyofela ehlathini noma entabeni ziphucwe ubudoda abantu abangakwazi abakwenzayo – izngane zethu azizonaizilwaneezihlatshelwauKhisimuzi. “Abaxolisi nalaba bantu ababulala izingane. Akekho umuntu ongadingeki emndenini nasemphakathini wakhe. Yingakho ngisebenzisana nodokotela bomNyango wezeMpilo ukuze bayobheka ehlathini ukuthi abantwana benziwani,” kugcizelela uNgangelizwelakhe. Uthe abantu baseKokstad basendaweni ehlanganisa iKZN neEasternCape.Uphethewathi:“Azingami la kuma khona ama truck izingane zethu. Akekho umuntu ozalwa enganawo amathalente. Uzowasebenzisa kanjani uma ungenawo amathuba?”

>> ON VAVI DECLINING PARLIAMENTARY SEAT “I am honoured by the ANC members’ confidence in me, demonstrated through nomination to serve as an MP, but I have to respectfully decline”. This was a tweet by suspended Congress of South African Trade Unions (Cosatu) secretary general Zwelinzima Vavi, after it was reported that ANC secretary general Gwede Mantashe had urged Vavi to join parliament as an MP. Mantashe was reported to have made this proposal at a funeral in the Eastern Cape two weeks ago.

Senzo Msomi “He did good by not accepting the position. I think it was bad timing for the ANC to make such a proposal. They should have made the proposal a long time ago. The ques tion that people should be asking themselves is, why are they offering him the position now? It was bad timing and he was brave for declining”.

Andile Mbokazi “The man has a case that is still pending against him and he should focus on that before jumping to another position. You cannot offer a position to a person who has a disciplinary hearing on pause. What is going to happen with his current case if he is now offered a position in parliament? Again, Cosatu was wrong to fire Vavi”.

Nhlanhla Ngwenya “Cosatu as an alliance needs solutions on matters that are taking place with in the alliance. We are seeing a lot of divisions and it’s high time they resolved the issues. We have elections this year and it is important that the issues are sorted out. I support Vavi’s decision for not taking up the MP position he was offered by the party”.

PHOTOS: NOMPENDULO NGUBANE

Slindile Ntuli “Right now, Vavi needs to focus on his suspension as the secretary general of Cosatu. Other things will follow after he is done with his case. It was not brave for the ANC to make that offer. It’s like they are buying him since there will be elections this year. If they wanted to offer him a position, they should have done it a long time ago. Why now?”

WAZULU–Natal motorists will again have to dig deep into their pockets following a provincial cabinet decision to change all vehicle number plates to “KZN” registrations. After years of fiercely-debated proposals to replace town-based registrations like “ND” and “NP” in line with Gauteng and other provinces, Department of Transport spokesperson Kwanele Ncalane confirmed that the provincial cabinet had approved the department’s plan to require motorists to acquire new, provincial plates. Ncalane said the current, residence-based plates — denoting phrases like “Natal, Durban” — were “colonial”, subject to abuse, difficult for police to trace and running out of

Townbased number plates to be scrapped digits. While details of the change-over are yet to be announced, it is understood the new plates are likely to be aluminium — not plastic — and include a provincial logo, in the same waythatEasternCapemotoristshave an elephant and Limpopo plates have a baobab image. However, at least one opposition party expressed dismay at the decision. DA transport spokesperson Radley Keys said the department shouldinsteadfocusonreducingtraffic accidents: “There is no need for this change. They are being utterly bizarre because our current system works fine. With this process, every vehicle owner will be affected, while those in licensing businesses will be smiling with fat bank balances”. The Western Cape is the only other province to use residence–based registrations — and Siphesihle Dube,

spokesperson for its Department of Transport on Sunday revealed that the days of the famed CA registration were numbered too. “Initial indications show that the Western Cape will soon be running out of CA registration plates. Now we need to convert to a standardised and uniform registration plates system”. Chief executive of the South African Number Plate Association, Zurika Louw, said the change would improve security and car identification — especially after severe accidents. “I understand that KZN wants their plates to be aluminium, which cannot be copied or burnt in the case of accident”. Ncalane said: “There are several businesses selling fake plates which proves to be difficult for the department to trace them. Also in terms of safety we need these standardised

plates,” he said. Ncalane said the KZN department is now seeking permission from the national Department of Transport to develop an operational plan for the roll-out, and, thereafter, to amend legislation. Saying that registrations should “reflect the change to the democratic dispensation”, he added: “In terms of safety on our roads, we need standardised plates. Because the national departmentisthecustodianofvehicle plates, wewrotealetterrequestingan approval and amendment to the road traffic act”. Ncalane could not reveal precise figures of what it would cost motorists to have their plates replaced. However, registration costs currently exceed R500, while basic number plates cost at least R150 per set. The plan has been greeted with mixed feelings by motorists.

Joel Moodley complained there was “nothing wrong” with his existing plates. “My main worry is that I will have to pay for this. I believe the government should issue registrations for free for once,” said Moodley. But Sebastian Atkinson said the change could help unite the people of South Africa’s most populous province. “It might be a good move to unite us as people. Why were we separated in the first place? It’s nice to identify your vehicle from your province when you’re outside it. But the cost implication will be a serious factor here,” said Atkinson. Automobile Association spokesperson Graeme Scala said there were clear safety benefits to the change. “It might help in data collection to haveplatesthatreflectaprovince,”he said. WR

TALKING FOOTBALL THABO DLADLA

BETHLEHEM, or is it QwaQwa, nevertheless their loss is Pietermaritzburg’s gain. Steve Komphela is good news for young people in this town. He is more than just a football coach. I hope his tight schedule allows him time to visit some of our schools. Our boys and girls can only become better people through interacting with the likes of Steve. Thanks to Farook Kadodia for

bringing this guy to our sleepy dorpie. We hope this appointment might awaken the sleeping giant amongst many of our youngsters. We can only wish him luck during the last lap of the PSL race. It is always a challenge to take over teams during this part of a season. I think he is inheriting a squad of very good people. Maritzburg United has been lucky in the last few years to have very humble and dedicated footballers.

HILE Sobantu Shooting Stars are still licking their wounds from a humiliating 4-1defeat by Kings United in a local derby, Maritzburg City played to a 2–all draw. Stars suffered the defeat at their home ground, Eddels Sportsground, near Mountain Rise on Saturday afternoon, while city played at Wadley Stadium in Edendale. Kings United is from Mpumalanga township in Hammarsdale. It was the first match for both teams, plying their trades in the second division league. The Sobantu Shooting Stars were leading by a goal by Mbuzeni “Masinga” Ngcoya in the first half. Within 20 to 30 minutes of the game Kings United striker Dumisani Dlamini equalised.Hefollowedupwithasecondgoalinabout 40minutes,beforecompletinghishat–trick.Si-

Professional football is a job, supporters are customers and football fields are players’ and coaches’ offices. I think United’s players are getting someone that is not only interested in results. Steve is the kind of person who cares about others. South Africa is yearning for football coaches who serve the game more than themselves. In fact, the culture of profits before service needs to change if we are to succeed as a nation.

yabonga Nhlangothi scored the 4th one for the visitors. Sobantu Shooting Stars seemed to lack the energy they had in the first half, after Kings United scored their first goal. Stars coach Bha Mpisi said this game being their first might have impacted negatively on them. “Theboysweredoingwellinthefirsthalf but they lacked energy. We kicked off with a bang when the game started and all was lost as the game went on. In the second half, we created scoring chances but we were unable to convert those chances into goals. In soccer , when you create a chance, you have to convert and that didn’t happen with us,” said Mpisi. Kings United coach Siyabonga Mdluli said he is happy with the win but worried at the same time. He said Sobantu Shooting Stars are a big team and are difficult team to beat. “One has to work hard in order to beat them and that is not a child’s play. It’s a challenge. We now have to keep up with a good soccer standard,” said Mdluli.

Morally, it is wrong for a professional coach to also serve as an agent for players. This compromises his professionalism in the execution of his duties. Generally, I also have doubts if South African football will thrive under the present conditions. It is important that the game serve players instead of officials. Presently, football at club level servesofficialsmorethantheplayers.

NEWS

We do things to suit officials not the players. I think over and above the training of coaches, football administrators in South Africa need a crash course on technical matters. Football is mainly an activity within the four white lines. The reality is that many of the football officials never played this game. Is it possible to have technically informed decisions then? Unzima lo mthwalo!

ARITZBURG United goalkeeper coach Arthur Bartman has left the club to join the battling Lamontville Golden Arrows, amid coaching changes in the Team of Choice. The Pietermaritzburg–born, and former Kaizer Chiefs second choice goalkeeper, Bartman has decided to come out of playing retirement to add experience in the goalkeeping department of Abafana Bes’thende. Bartman’s arrival at Maritzburg United as a goalkeeper coach from the Naturena-based outfit at the beginning of the season was greeted with much fanfare. Last week, United’s chairman Farouk Kadodia confirmed that Bartman has unexpectedly left his team. “It is with great disappointment that the club confirms the resignation of Arthur Bartmanfromhispostasgoalkeepercoach.Arthur was poached by Lamontville Golden Arrows before the Christmas break. It is believed that he will return to playing. The club further expresses its disappointment in the manner in which its technical staff have been poached in the last six months,” said Kadodia Abafana Bes’thende media officer, Vusumuzi Vilakazi, confirmed to Echo this week that his team was looking for an experienced back–up goalkeeper and Bartman was also on their wanted list. “The club is going through a bad patch and we are trying to bolster the squad in different departments. Yes, Bartman’s name was also on the list,” said Vilakazi. Bartman agreed to Echo that he was no longer with the Team of Choice and that he was joining a new club as a “back–up player in the goalkeeping department”. His departure coincidedwiththeappointmentofSteveKomphela as the head coach and the sacking of his predecessor Clinton Larsen.
