“It was a bad decision to reduce Jub Jub’s sentence to 10 years, He was under the influence of alcohol and drugs when he got into that car and caused the accident. I think the Oscar Pistorius sentence has an impact on Maarohanye’s reduced sentence.”

“The judge made the right decision by reducing the artist’s sentence to 10 years.”
“The parents of those children are still in so much pain, their only hope was to see justice taking it’s course. He deserved to serve his sentence and finish the 20 years that he was given by the judge. It’s unfair for the families and those children who were left brain damaged.”

Copesville residents complain about “unresponsive” station NOKULUNGA NGOBESE
>>nokulungan@myecho.co.za
AMID the recent “mob justice” incident by some community members of Copesville, residents have cited the unresponsiveness of the satellite police station as the reason for people taking the law into their own hands. Residents who spoke to Echo, but who did not want to be identified, said that while the crime rate is escalating in the area, there is usually no one to report it to as police are hardly ever at the station. According to residents, this year alone there have been more than 10 burglaries which have remained unresolved. Speaking on behalf of the residents, Mbongeni Nodada said: “We have complained about the police station that is forever closed,. When we complained, we were told that this was due to police patrolling other nearby areas, but we do not believe that. “There is so much crime in the area but people are unable to find assistance. It is by chance if you find them at the police station. People are forced to take taxis to Mountain Rise police station. We even suggested the formation of a Community Policing Forum (CPF) which we were told was already in existence, but we have not seen it in action. “We are appealing for the CPF to be restructured and it should include all racial lines, as crime affects us all.”

The Copesville satellite police station which residents complain is often closed Residents say that they live in fear, with house burglaries happening while they are at home and hijackings being rife. “People are taking the law into their own hands because they have lost faith in the police. Our houses have been broken into while we are asleep, we are hijacked at gun point in our driveways. What more can we do if police are unresponsive?” said another resident, who did not want to be identified. ActingstationcommanderofMountainRisePolice Station, Colonel Chris Wiles, said that the station is only closed when there is no electricity supply, there is a sewage blockage and spillage, operational challenges as a result of service delivery protests or a manpower crisis due to emergency redeployments.
“If the station is closed due to any of the above reasons, a patrol vehicle is tasked to make regular patrols and checks at the satellite station to assist members of the public. There are 12 members deployed on a 24 hour shift basis from Mountain Rise police station, three members per shift including a vehicle. “We humbly apologise for any inconvenience caused to the community, and the station managementwillmakeeveryefforttoensurethatthesatellite station is not closed unnecessarily. “The community is welcome to contact Colonel Pillay at 082 418 2018 to report any inconvenience caused to them by the SAPS or for an urgent response to a complaint.”

N a bid to boycott retail giant Woolworths, due to the stocking of Israeli products, the local wing of the Young Communist League of South Africa and National Education, Health and Allied Workers’ Union (Nehawu) embarked on a peaceful picket and a shop stop campaign inside Woolworths at the Liberty Midlands Mall over the weekend. Nehawu and the Young Communist League have put forward the demand that Woolworths cut all its economic ties with Israel due to the Israel-Gaza conflict. Due to the boycott action, the Woolworths store was closed for three hours. The Young Communist League of South Africa district deputy secretary, Njabulo Mtolo, viewed the non-production as a success for the campaign. The protesters held placards with slogans such as “Woolworths we hate you for killing peopleinPalestine”,“WecallWoolworthstocut all trade with Israel”, “We say no to apartheid, no to Woolworths, Viva Palestine” and “Boycott Woolworths for supporting apartheid Israel.” “We will boycott other Woolworths stops and
anyothercompanythatstocksIsraeliproducts. The campaign is a national campaign and has been carried out in other parts of the country. We submitted the memorandum to Woolworths management and we hope that they will hear us and tackle the matter,” said Mtolo. In a statement, Woolworths acknowledged that the conflict in the Middle East has affected its customers and its employees. “Woolworths abhors violence and loss of life, particularly of children, in any circumstance and we are deeply saddened by the tragic consequences of the ongoing conflict in Gaza. Many of our customers have asked if we source from the occupied territories. We do not. “Further, all our suppliers are expected to adhere to the ethical standards in our code of conduct. As a South African company, we cater for a wide range of customers in our stores and try hard to acknowledge and celebrate the various beliefs and traditions of each group,” reads the statement. Woolworths declared having no political affiliations and that less that 0.1% of its food is from Israel.

N a class of 90 pupils, we were in a ‘special’ class in Grade two in a rural school in the late ‘90s. It was special not in the sense of our mentalchallenges, whichIdon’tthinkIhad, but in the way we were made to feel proud to be in a classroom the size of two and being taught by two teachers. Fast forward to another school in a township and I found myself in a class of about 70 pupils in Grade five and we were told how lucky we were. There were rumours of model C schools in town having as little as 20 to 30 pupils, but this was disregarded as “utter nonsense.” As the years went by and I changed schools, the class numbers varied and
somethingdisturbingoccurredwhenIwent to high school. We were given a chance to decide our futures in Grade nine, a year before we were made to choose subjects we would study for the remainder of our schooling careers. I will be honest, I chose physics because I thought it sounded cool. As luck would have it, I chose a class with physics and biology and core mathematics and accounting as well. There were seven Grade 10 classes in our school and I was in the “double-science” class. What worried me, however, was the number of Grade 11 and Grade 12 classes. At my school in 2006, there were five classes in Grade 11 and only three in Grade

It was constantly reinforced that not all of us would make it, that not all of us were smart enough, and it was halfknocked out of a lot of us how our dreams of big houses and many cars were unrealistic, but we did not know then how bad it would really be. If I remember correctly, the class of 2007 Grade 11s was a staggering six classes, but two of the classes were so small that they had to be merged, leaving us with only five. And in that fateful year, our teachers went on a

Kuyinto embi ukuthi sibabuke bedlala nawo wonke amavukuvuku ePSL kodwa sibe nenkinga mase kuza amaqembu amakhulu. Siyayithanda i-Team of Choice, futhi sisazoqhubeka nokuyiseka. strike and they stayed away from the classroomfor, accordingtomymemory, close to a month or longer. Maybe we can blame the strike for the dismal results, or maybe it was bound to happen, but it was seriously bad. I failed two subjects and produced dismalmarksformathematics. Anyway, I was ‘condoned’ as I was considered a victim of the strike and given a chance to redeem myself in matric. So in Grade 12 we were merged with the class of Grade 11 G (we being F) as we bothlostmanytothehatchetoffailureand theguillotineofdrop-out-andjustlikethat we became grade 12 D. We were the guinea pigs for the then new National Senior Certificate and no one knew what to expect from us in terms of pass rates. In the end, we achieved a 96% or so pass rate, but only a quarter or so of us qualified for university. Of that minute number, a smaller fraction still, got accepted at university, and fewer still could afford it or were lucky enough to get financial aid. Gloomier still, of those who held out and continued to study, a few finished and got their degrees and a lucky few of us have been fortunate enough to secure employment. Why am I telling this gloomy story? It is just an observation I have made, albeit withaheavyheart.Ifthisstoryhasa moral to it, it may be that we have to remember that not all of us will prosper and that is a reality we can either choose to accept or change. The reality is, it exists.

“W
ITH this year’s double increase in interest rates, an increase in inflation and several fuel hikes, as well as the ripple effect of escalating food prices, many consumers’ pockets are stretched to the limit,” said Credit Ombud Manie van Schalkwyk. The reality is that those consumers’ needsanddesireswillnotdiminish because of this. Many will not be deterred from satisfying their urge to spend and they will simply incur more debt and still sign up for those gym or cell phone contracts, he said. This behaviour may lead to problems for many consumers, warned van Schalkwyk. “The National Credit Amendment Act has placed a spotlight on affordability assessments, with proposed guidelines to be implemented to further strengthen the protection afforded to both consumers and credit providers alike when it comes to decision making in extending credit. “The proposed guidelines, which seek to standardise how affordability assessments are conducted, were published for public comment and we await the final document and implementation date. “The law has been created to protect consumers, but it is often seen as an obstacle. Consumers need to appreciate that affordability assessments are not there
to restrict or deny them access to credit for no good reason, but it must be applied properly in order to be effective,’ said van Schalkwyk. “We always tell consumers that no one is in a better position to know if they can afford more credit than themselves. They know their true monthly expenditure and how far they can stretch their budgets. “The best advice is for consumers to assess themselves before even going to a store to apply for credit or take on new service agreements which involve fixed monthly payments. “If your budget is already stretched, resist the temptation to enter into an agreement which carries with it a monthly instalment with interest and costs,” added van Schalkwyk. If the credit provider decides that you qualify for more credit, it does not mean that in actual fact you can afford it. It is better to assess your own finances verycritically.Inthisway, youcansaveyourself from more financial or even legal trouble in the future. ‘You should also remember to always leave a bit of ‘fat’ in your budget for increases in interest rates and other unforeseen expenseswhichmayplaceadditionalpressure on your finances,” he said. LEXUS South Africa has refreshed three vehicles in its local line-up (CT 200h, ES and IS 350) with style and technology upgrades. Lexus South Africa general manager, Justin Ryan, said that the updates to the automaker’s CT, ES and IS models, enhance usability and add significant value. “These updates improve the functionality, safetyandvisualappeal of these Lexus models. “We’ve added these items at little costtoconsumers-furtherenhancing Lexus’ reputation of comprehensive standard specification and outstanding value for money.” The Lexus CT 200h gains a reversing camera, cruise control,
The Nissan X-Trail is here ISSAN’S third-generation X-Trail has arrived in South Africa, sporting a stylish new design, a tech upgrade and a five-star safety rating. The new SUV is here in three specifications (XE, SE, LE) and engine options (1.6 diesel, 2.0 and 2.5-litre petrol), and can be ordered in either two or all-wheel-drive. The 1.6dCi turbocharged diesel is capable of 96kW/320 mated to six-speed manual and a choice of two- or fourwheel drive. Fuel consumption is rated at a claimed 5.3-litres/100km with emissions of 134g/km The two non-turbo engines, 126kW/233Nm 2.5-litre petrol SE derivatives, mated to a Xtronic CVT, are available in all-wheel drive and a choice of five or seven seats. The two-litre XE units are capable of 106kW/200Nm but also have a six-speed box. Fuel consumption for each is listed as 8.4/100km with emissions of 197g/km. The new X-Trail is available with Nissan’s All-Mode 4x4i system (2.5 SE 4WD, 1.6dCi SE 4WD and 1.6dCi LE 4WD). The system provides three driving modes – 2WD, Auto and 4WD Lock. In auto mode, Nissan says, “constant monitoring of throttle position, engine speed and torque distribution, to anticipate wheelspin, dictates when the system seamlessly distributes torque between the front and rear axles as needed, at up to 80km/h”. Above 80, it reacts to wheel-spin and shifts torque to the rear wheels. In 4WD Lock all-wheel drive is permanently engaged. The four entry-level XE units are equipped with a rear spoiler, power windows, Nissan’s advanced driveassist display, cloth upholstery, multi-function steering

SUCCESS STORY
My name is Priya (43 years), from Howick, Pietermaritzburg. From the bottom of my heart I thank Mr Baka for saving my marriage. My husband of 12 years had been taken away from me by another woman. After moving from one herbalist to another without any success, a colleague at work told me about Mr Baka. I went there and within three days my husband came back, using water and a mirror, Baka also showed me all my enemies. I have no other way to thank this man, only to tell the whole world about him. He can also boost business, chase bad spells and tokoloshe, unfinished jobs, quick sale of property, illness, lucky oil to win at the casino and many more. THE PSL show will be back on track on Saturday, after two weeks of Fifa matches. Fixtures around the country are mouth-watering and will be an acid test for most of the teams after the break. Local outfit Maritzburg United are likely to be one of the teams that will appear fit and ready. Team of Choice head coach Steve Komphela and his management were able to keep the team on course and sharp. United will host Platinum Stars on Saturday night at 8:15pm at Harry Gwala Stadium. Local fans are expected to enjoy an interesting game because the two sides play different blends of soccer and the coaches are not at the same level. Komphela is a natural leader.
