Social networks a major election campaign tool ECHO REPORTER

>>news@myecho.co.za

W

ITH only few weeks before the 7 May general elections, political parties have intensified their campaigning, using different channels of communication and all available media channels. The Democratic Alliance (DA) has, at the moment, won in the popularity stakes with its television adverts on different television channels and radio stations. The African National Congress (ANC) seems to to have won the pole battle, as they seem to be on every street pole during this campaign. The party has also employed the popular mediums of TV and radio as advertising tools for their

election message. Political parties are also exploring social media as another way of encouraging voters to support them. According to a survey that was conducted by www.publicnewshub.com, the DA and the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) are the two growing political parties on social networks such as Facebook and Twitter. According to statistics, over 12 million South Africans have access to the internet. The survey further says that in September 2013, the EFF was the fastest growing political party on Facebook. It had 46 269 likes on Facebook and its then three-month-old Twitter page had 23 578 followers. The survey revealed that the DA had a total of 11 365

new people who liked their Facebook page. They took the total number of likes from 30 878 to 42 243. In September, the ANC had 26 376, 30 343 likes and in November, 29 158. Agang SA had 25 296 in September and 29 158 in November. The survey further said that Facebook likes and Twitter followers for Cope and IFP are much less. The ANC dominates Twitter with 81 043 followers. In September to November it had 10 418 new followers. In second position is the DA with 44 330 followers and Agang SA which has 36 673 followers. The EFF is at the fourth position with 28 090 followers. The growth rate of the ANC and Agang SA were 14.75% and 11.72%, according to the survey. The political parties also use fashion as a way of campaigning. The ANC and DA have their political party branded clothes such as berets, stylish dresses, Tshirts, leather jackets and bandanas. Young male and female bikers carrying flags and branding on cars have made the ANC more visible.

OR the first time this year Vulindlela residents will commemorate Freedom Day differently, with a freedom race taking place next Sunday. The race, ending at Sevontein prison, will be divided into sections, with one being an eight kilometre race and the other a four kilometre race. We normally commemorate the day with events and beauty pageants, which really have no relevance to the day. These celebrations often end up in young people engaging in social ills and for a change, we wanted to do something constructive. “Through the race, we want to revive that human spirit and at the same time, promote a healthy lifestyle. Christ story fit in? SIMPHIWE MKHIZE

I

T is fascinating to observe that the great universal story of the life of the Lord Jesus Christ has, in its own unique way, all the characteristics of a conventional script. I will base my evaluation of the Lord Jesus Christ’s superb and extraordinary story about his birth, life, death and resurrection on the notes I took during a workshop on film scriptwriting which was conducted by a scripting guru, Mthuthuzeli Matshoba, who headed the writing of the popular TV series, Yizo Yizo. Matshoba told us that the script has three parts but it can be approached in any way a writer likes. There are Acts 1, 2, and 3. Act 1 is the beginning of the script or story. In the case of our Lord’s story, Act 1 is when he is born to his mother, Mary, the virgin. But even in the beginning, something unusual happens. Christ, whose coming to the world as the Messiah had been prophesied, is born of the Holy Spirit. His parents do not have to make love or have sexual intercourse in order for the good Lord to be born. As though that is not enough, strangers in the form of the three wise men from the east come to greet the new-born baby, Christ. They

walk all the way, guided by a star in the sky to the place where the special one had been born in Bethlehem. Matshoba said that in the beginning of a script, life starts normal – and in the case of Christ, things seemed quite normal because he worked with his mother’s husband who was his earthly father, Joseph, the carpenter. It takes Christ thirty years to start showing that He is the Messiah, and He then starts establishing himself as a high priest and miracle man par-excellence. He gets to live for three years only. In just three years, he lights up a mighty fire that is to consume the world forever. But even at an early age, the Son of Man is already fond of the synagogue where he discusses matters pertaining to God with authority that does not befit a youngster. And that brings us to Act 2: the middle of the story – what actually happens in the story. The story of our Christ starts shaping up. Christ begins to work - he starts showing that he is distinct and not like the rest of us – that he is indeed a God in man. He starts healing the sick, chastising and chasing away demons, and he talks of himself as the Son of God and Messiah that was prophesied, through whom others will find salvation. This upsets the Jewish elite, that is, the Pharisees and the People of the Law. They despise him for portraying or presenting himself as a very special son of God, and they do not see him as the way and the light, but just poor old Joseph’s son. They find it offensive that he says he is the bread that people must eat and the wine that they must drink in order to get eternal life. What is this man talking about? Who does he think he is? Yes, Christ continues to heal the sick and drive away or cast out demons, but Now with

they do not think he is a great person at all. They loathe him. They are jealous of him – his knowledgeandgiftsasamiraculoushealer.Theywish to reduce him to some kind of petty magician, and fake spiritual leader, a liar. Andthenhemocksthemandcallsthemhypocrites. When the wicked Jewish elite ask him to perform a miracle, almost as an act of entertainment or amusement, he rebukes them. Christ tells them that He would never perform a miracle for them because he knew that they are due to get him killed. Heactuallygoesontotellthemthatafterkilling him, he will stay under the ground for three days like Jonah in the stomach of a fish, and that onthethirdday, hetoowillcomeoutofthetomb. The holy book tells us that Christ is indeed reunited with his disciples and followers, and subsequently goes back to his father God in the heaven above. Act 3 is about the end of the script. The main character has a goal that he wants to achieve oraproblemthathewantstosolve.Thisiswhen the main character reaches the end of his or her journey. This happens amid obstacles the main character must go through before achieving his or her goal. The main character could succeed or fail – not all stories have desirable endings and outcomes. In the Lord Jesus Christ’s story, our master seems to be achieving both. In another secular script, the point where Christ is killedcouldhavebeenthetimewhentheviewer or reader is supposed to mourn or grieve and the story is over. At this stage we should be mourning that the main character, Jesus Christ, is caught. He is nailed on the cross. He is buried and the story is supposed to be over, but it is not! This confirms once again that our main character is unique and most extraordinary because his holy spirit comes back to continue with the task of building the church through his disciples and new apostles.

CALLING all word wizards and book nerds. Media24 Local News KZN (pub lishers of the Fever, Echo and Weekly titles) has partnered with the Office of he Premier to bring previously disad vantaged learners throughout the province their popular spelling bee competition. A spelling bee works according to knockout, where spellers are given a list of prechosen words (which will be printed in the abovementioned titles) two months before the competition. These words have to be learned by entrants, who will then gather at competitions in their areas, namely Zululand, North Coast, Durban central, Pietermaritz burg or the South Coast, to spell their way to glory. HE office of the KZN premier has partnered with Media24 – owners of KZN local news – to bring the highly successful spelling bee project to the whole of KZN. The spelling bee began in the Zululand community in 2010, through Media24’s local newspaper in that area, the Zululand Fever. Because of the success of the event, and its rapid growth, Media24 mandated that it be taken throughout the KZN province. The Office of the Premier, in its on-

going commitment to youth education and upliftment, has decided to partner with KZN local news (encompassing Fever, Weekly and Echo titles) to inculcatealoveoftheEnglishlanguage amongst second language English speakers from disadvantaged schools in the province. Media24’s head of local papers in South Africa, Ishmet Davidson, said the company is ‘thrilled’ at the prospect of the partnership, which will see hundreds of spellers throughout the province take part in the competi-

tion, whichhashundredsofthousands of rands in cash, book and bursary prizes up for grabs. “Media24 sees the spelling bee initiativeashavingthepotentialtosignificantly increase the focus and discipline of pupils when it comes to learning the English language. “Partnering with The Office of the Premier, schools and teachers, we believe we can make a positive impact on education in the province,” said Davidson. - Supplied

GUY VEZI THE church in South Africa should bless her children with citizens who are incorruptible, and who refuse to give in to the things that bedevil in our land today. This was the message from the rector of Seth Mokitimi Methodist Seminary in Pietermaritzburg, Rev. Dr. Mvume DandaladuringhisPalmSundaysermon at Rev. Dr. E.Z. Sikhakhane Methodist Church in uMlazi, south of Durban on Sunday. He based his sermon on Jesus’s last visit to Jerusalem before his crucifixion. He said: “As he approached Jerusalem and saw the city, he wept.” He went on to explain that Jesus was weeping for Jerusalem because Jerusalem was loved by God, but was unable to appreciate that love. “Perhaps in its pride,” said Dandala, “Jerusalem was dazzled by its own wealth, and the religious leaders felt that they were making a good living in the temple, such that they forgot to hear God. The overturning of the tables in the temple points to this sad state of affairs.” Dandala’s view is that the Church should remind itself constantly that it was raised to be the salt and yeast of the earth. He said: “The danger if we don’t do this is that before long, you find the Church mirroring the ways of the world. This should never be. “It is the ways of the Church that should influence the world, and not visa versa.”
