Radio station’s dream becomes a reality

AFTER much speculation, the city’s long awaited radio station KZN Capital 104 FM will finally come to life tomorrow. The station, whose conception began in 2006, was granted a broadcasting licence under Sizwe Community Radio Stake holders Forum, by the Independent Com munications Authority of South Africa (Icasa) in 2010. Over the past few years, things have not been easy for the station as it had problems with finding accommodation and being connected to the World’s View transmission antenna. The multilingual station, at 152 Langali balele street, will broadcast in IsiZulu, English and Afrikaans, targeting all the seven municipalities under the Umgungundlovu district and other parts of KwaZuluNatal. Speaking at a press briefing, station

manager Jerry Jones said: “While our aim is to be the community broadcasting service of choice, it will also be a platform to train youngsters as there are not enough opportunities for them. “After all the hurdles that we have been through, it is of no doubt that we will be successful. We envision becoming the leading community broadcasting service in South Africa. We are also grateful to Umgungundlovu district mayor Yusuf Bhamjee who stuck with us through all our hardships.” Congratulating the station, Bhamjee said: “Jones represents a person who says donotjudgemebymysuccess, butbyhow many times I fall and rise. We are reaching out to all our citizens to support the station. We hope it will grow into a very dynamic one, and will become part and parcel of the community.” The state of the art studio consists of an onair studio, production studio, news room and an open plan office.

Assisting PMB’s blind community

AUDIO book players known as Victor Readers were distributed to 29 visually impaired people in Pietermaritzburg to help them better access information. The move is part of ongoing efforts by the KwaZulu-Natal Department of Arts and Culture to assist the province’s blind community. There has been R1 million set aside for the mini-libraries project which aims to promote a cultureofreadingamongthevisuallyimpaired. Content is preloaded for the users and librarians monitor them every three months. The devices are portable and work like a cellphone, using headphones to feedback the audio. The information has been collected and converted by tertiary students assisting the programme. Beneficiaries of the project are selected through research conducted by The National Blind Society and district municipalities, in conjunction with the provincial department. Officials will continue conducting visits to communities across the province to add more

names to the department’s database. The department opened seven mini-librariesinvariousdistrictsacrossKZNlastyear,they will open another seven in 2014. Each of these facilities will have a document reader, also known as a Digital Accessible Information System (DAISY) machine on the premises where blind users can place any documents or newspapers and it reads the content back to them. Mandla Ntombela, the chief librarian at the Bessie Head Library which is in the Msunduzi Municipality, has expressed his confidence in the project. “This project will improve the lives of many blind people living in KwaZulu-Natal as it will afford them the opportunity to better themselves by furthering their education and keeping informed of what is happening in the province, country and world at large,” said Ntombikayise Sibhidla-Saphetha, MEC for Arts and Culture in KwaZulu-Natal. Hearing loss can be avoided >> AT least one person in every family has a hearing problem, that is why it is important for people to go for a hearing test at least once a year,” says Dr Futhi Mkhize, the first black female audiologist to own a private practice in the city. NOKULUNGA NGOBESE spoke to her. Important info Those taking TB treatment, HIV/AIDS treatment and chronic medication are at risk of losing their sense of hearing and should reg ularly go for checkups. Those who are exposed to loud noise on a daily basis are also at risk. Achildwithimpairedspeechattwoyearsold should go for testing. Those with a family history of hearing loss should go for testing. It is safer to clean the interior of an ear using a towel instead of an ear bud. When you have an ear infection, do not risk using over the counter medication.

EEING how people living with hearing disabilities were treated, especially amongst black communities, encouraged the KwaMaphumulo born 33-year-old to enrol in a Bachelor of Communications in pathology degree, specializing in audiology and speech therapy. Her daily duties include conducting hearing tests, fitting hearing aids and cleaning wax. “The ear has a vital function, yet it is often the most neglected organ of the body. Our busy lifestylesexposeustoalotofnoisewhichmakes us vulnerable to hearing problems. “In every family, there is at least one person with a hearing problem, and that is why everyone should go for a check-up at least once a year, as age and hereditary can be contributory. As a result of this, I believe it is important for everyone to learn the basics of sign language,” she said. Mkhize added that she would encourage companies to send those employees who are exposed to loud noises for tests every six months. “The problem is still common, mostly in our black communities, where some professionals

do not understand what audiology is about. There are cases where deafness could have been avoided if it was detected earlier, but because we are not exposed to such information we delay it until later. “Early identification allows early intervention.” Currently, Mkhize is working with local deaf organizations and special schools in conducting hearing tests. “In some cases, you find that a child is continuously failing and is treated as a special case, when the only problem is their hearing ability. There are so many risk factors that lead to the loss of hearing. I would encourage more children to consider the field and I am even prepared to mentor them,” she said. Her biggest dream is to see those in rural areas accessing such services as equally as their urban counterparts. In the next five years, Mkhize hopes to have impacted on the whole country through public awareness campaigns. When she is not working, the married motheroftwoenjoysgoingtochurchandnetworking with various people.

Happy accidents and God’s grace Sibusiso Biyela

@astrosibs

TO kick off Mandela Week, I thought Ishouldgiveajoyful account of why you and everyone you know (and the rest of the cosmos) should not exist. Hopefully by the end of this column, you will have decided if you exist by the grace of God or if you are nothing but a happy accident. We gather our perception of the universe from ‘The standard model’, which predicted something called the Higgs Boson, infamously known as the “God Particle”. Hints of the particle were found by scientists using the Large Hadron Collider (LHC), in Geneva in July 2012. The LHC is currently the largest scientific instrument in the world, having a circumference of 27 kilometres and spanning three countries (the SKA will dethrone the LHC with 2000 satellite dishes in Africa and another 1000 in Australia when it is completed in 2024). The existence of this particle means there is a “Higgs field”, which is

thoughttogivemasstoother particles, if the standard model holds true. In March this year, this publication reported on the BICEP2 results from a telescope placed in the South Pole which claimed that they had indirectly detected gravitational waves, which are the ripples in space consistent with the idea that the universe expanded rapidly very shortly after the Big Bang. Together these two discoveries seem to suggest that the universe should not exist; that the cosmos should have collapsed on itself almost immediately after the Big Bang. This obviously isn’t true, or I would not be sitting here watching television while trying to type. It must be said, however, that the scientists who conducted the BICEP2 experiment admit that they may not have in fact detected gravitational waves - the ripples from the cosmic inflation - instead they may have detected space dust from our own galaxy, the Milky Way.

Stuff happens, that’s science for you. So, something is not right here. Obviously there is other physics we are yet to understand at play. Maybe it has something to do with dark matter, maybe not. At this point we can only speculate and avoid what I just did, using dark matter a force we barely understand - to try to account for a result that should not be. This is what science is all about, what excites most scientists - and science journalists alike - the advent of what is to be known and what new mystery could be born out of new discoveries. Paraphrasing Nelson Mandela, when one reaches the top of a hill, one finds that there are many more to be climbed. That is basically the path of scientific discovery. Also, when one reaches that crest of discovery, one may find that when looking back, there are potholes left behind, gaps in the knowledge of what we already know. Happy knowledge hunting.

ODAY, a group from iThembalethu Academy for the Performing Arts will be performing their third and last stage play, SoundGaze: Moving Images of Marie in Woyzeck, in Zimbabwe, Harare. The group will then be heading back to South Africa on Friday morning. Last week, the group had performed at the multi media theatre production at the National Arts Festival in Grahamstown. The play is adapted from Georg Buchner’s stage play Woyzeck. It is based on the true story of a soldier who murdered his lover over infidelity. The play features Zimbabwean actors Michael Kudakwashe and Edgar Langeveldt. The play is directedbyiThembalethu’scommunicationsmanag er Juanita Chitepo. Chitepo said that she discovered the play in 2008

and became obsessed from her first reading. “We applied to perform in Grahamstown and I am happy that we succeeded. Most of the students who come to our academy have never played any musical instrument. After just two weeks of practice, they all start playing in public, which is amazing,” said Chitepo. The group performed five shows in Grahamstown. Speaking to Echo before the Harare trip, Chitepo said that Harare is the theatre city and she looked forward to performing in front of people who are passionate about theatre. She said that she is ecstatic that the play which the group performed is now being studied by a university doctoral student. “She is studying the play for the reason that it incorporates multimedia technology, because the debates in theatrical circles is that theatre is a dying entity due to strides in technology,” she said.

THE owners of Tiger Tiger Night Club have decided to bring back the old famous name of Crowded House Night Club. This was revealed by the managers of the club, Jonathan Da Rosa and Sinjen Cotchobos. According to Cotchobos, they have decided that the name Crowded House should return because of the history the night club has. Crowded house has been in the city for 16 years, said Cotchobos. “It has been the night club that the people of Pietermaritzburg have been going to for 16 years. It will once again rise up and be the place that people can meet, bringing back the great parties and great vibe that have kept people excited all these years. So many residents have

met each other at the club. Some of them got married and now have families. Crowded House has been part of many people’s lives and has become one of Pietermaritzburg’s favorite party destinations. The returning of the name is accompanied by renovations that will take place next month. The renovations will include a second dance floor, a new VIP and entertainment area,” he said. Crowded House night club will be relaunched tomorrow and Saturday, added Cotchobos. “On Friday, we will be hosting well known Durban Djs. The doors open at 8pm with Dj Ameeth, (lady Dj) and Funky B. On Saturday, Johannesburg Dj Ryan Dent will be at the club. Entry is free on both Friday and Saturday from 8 to 10pm. After 10pm, the entry fee is R30 and R50 after 12am,” said Cotchobos.

Red Dot award for new Mercedes VClass The Mercedes V Class has been award ed the prestigious Red Dot Design award.

THE new MercedesBenz VClass received the Red Dot Award: Product Design in one of the world’s largest product competitions for design quality. The MPV impressed the jury primarily with its elegance and sportiness. Thanks to its design elements, the new VClass is unmistakably a member of the MercedesBenz passenger car family, and ex udes an air of modern luxury. The powerful front is characterised by an upright radiator grille with a centrallypositioned threedimensional star. In the interior, the VClass continues to demon strate the clear design philosophy. The cockpit design, with its circular instruments, freestanding central display and intelligent use of space appealed to the jury. “Dynamic contours and intelligently showcased hitech features make the V

Class an automotive icon. The new VClass is a state ment of modern luxury,” commented Gorden Wagen er, Head of Design at Daimler AG. Theindependentexpertjurywasimpressedbythe design quality of the VClass. “Its elegant yet sporty design makes the VClass a modern MPV offering plenty of space,” said the jury in its reasoning statement in the Red Dot Design yearbook. In addition to the VClass, three other passenger car models from MercedesBenz received prizes as part of the Red Dot Award: Product Design. The Red Dot for high design quality went to the Mercedes Benz CClass as well as the MercedesBenz GLA. The SClass Coupé was honoured with the “Honourable Mention” award for particularly wellimplemented detailed solutions.

The Accord's interior exudes luxury and a techsavvy sophistication.

T

HE ninth generation of the best-selling Honda Accord is now available in showrooms, and is more luxurious, better performing and better equipped than any of its predecessors. The new Accord model has contemporary styling, but retains its athletic appearance. Despite the changes, the new Accord remains focused on providing the same blend of unbeatable Honda safety and security, value for money, fun-to-drive performance and passenger comfort. Interior space has been improved in every dimension, creating an overriding sense of sophistication. Three models are available with Elegance, Executive and Exclusive trim levels and a choice of 2.0-litre and 2.4-litre four-cylinder engines, and – for the first time in South Africa – a 3.5-litre V6 engine with an advanced sixspeed automatic gearbox. According to Graham Eagle, director of salesandmarketingatHondaMotorsSouthern Africa, the new Accord range has all the hallmarks of greatness. “It elevates the Accord nameplate into even loftier territory than before, while providing its occupants with a premium-grade motoring experience.” From the front bumpers to the exhaust finishers, literally nothing was left untouched in the redesign of the Accord, and all major elementswererefined.TheresultisanAccordthat boasts a sportier appearance, more responsive handling, greater fuel efficiency and even better safety systems. To give the Accord every advantage in the highly competitive mid-size segment, a completely new interior was designed, bringing with it a level of luxury never before seen in the Accord range. The new dashboard features mul-

tiple displays, and the controls and instrumentation have been simplified to help the driver feel in command. A rear-view camera and new audio system are available in all three models. Other standard features across the range include electric windows, heated leather seats for driver and passengers, as well as eight-way electrical adjustment for the driver’s seat with memory function. Also standard is a multifunction leather steering wheel, outside temperature display, front and rear armrests, and a rear air-conditioning vent for the passengers’ comfort. Advanced active and passive safety systems, including ABS brakes with electronic brake force distribution (EBD) and emergency brake assistance (EBA), vehicle stability assist (VSA), hill start assist, trailer stability assist (TSA), daytime running lights, multiple airbags and active head restraints are standard in all Accord models. Honda’s latest Advanced Driver Assist System (ADAS) – an award-winning safety system embracing individual elements such as Adaptive Cruise Control, Lane Keeping Assist System and a Collision Mitigation Braking System – features in the range-topping Accord 3,5 V6 Exclusive. The new Accord range, available in seven modern colours, comes standard with Honda’s three-year/100 000 km warranty. — Supplied.

Maximising the use of qualities in players THE 2014 World Cup has clearly demonstrated the importance of a good balance between individual brilliance and collective play. A team can no longer depend on one or two creative players. In fact, every player should be capable to initiate, participate and finish the actions. Probably the biggest lesson is that to win at this level, one needs to maximise use of qualities. South American teams with lots of European based players have suffered in this tournament. Brazil with a large group os England based (Chelsea) players were the worst team. It is clear that their work environment has destroyed all their creative skills. What has been happening to the English teams in international competitions over the past thirty years? Do South Africans know who they are? Are football leaders aware of the qualities,

Messi, Eden Hazard, Sergio Aguero, Xavi are some of the dominant footballers in world football. Are we not surprised that Portugal has struggled in international competitions in the last 20 years? Size is not everything in football. The greatest footballers of all time like Pele and Maradona were not giants. It is irritating therefore to see leaders allowing foreigners destroying our football. This is happening at a time when the world is embracing the qualities of the small players. Football is a game for all sizes and ages. It is a game for different philosophies, mentalities, styles and cultures. South Africa will best be advised to find themselves. Copies have never been valid. Unzima Lomthwalo!

ERLIN - Germany’s World Cup winners shared their fourth title with hundreds of thousandsoffansbyparadingthetrophy through cheering throngs to celebrate at the Brandenburg Gate yesterday. An estimated 400 000 people packed the “fan mile” in front of the Berlin landmark to welcome home coach Joachim Loew’s team and the trophy - which returned to Germany for the first time in 24 years. It crowned years of work by Loew to modernise the team, and followed a string of near misses at recent tournaments. “We’re all world champions!” Loew told the crowd. “Of course, it was a long way to the title, and an incredibly tough one in the end. But we’re incredibly happy to be here with the fans now.” Mario Götze, the scorer in the 1-0 win over Argentina in the final on Sunday, was greeted with deafening cheers by the sea of fans waving black, red and gold Germany flags. Midfielder Toni Kroos led the crowd in a chant of “Miro Klose” - a tribute to veteran striker Miroslav Klose, whose two goals took his World Cup tally to 16 and made him the tournament’s all-time leading scorer.

The team plane landed at Tegel Airport in midmorning after flying low over the “fan mile” -whichbythenhadbeenpackedforhours,with some waiting overnight to get places at the front. Captain Philipp Lahm led the team off the aircraft holding the trophy aloft, to cheers and a chorus of “Football’s Coming Home” from fans on the airport’s viewing terrace. He was followed by midfielder Bastian Schweinsteiger, draped in a German flag and sporting a bandage under his right eye, the result of a cut in the final. From the airport, the team set off on a twohour trip to downtown Berlin in a bus painted with the years of Germany’s World Cup victories: the previous occasions were in 1954, 1974 and 1990. The team donned matching black T-shirts with “1” on the front and climbed aboard an open-top truck for the last part of the trip to the Brandenburg Gate, crawling through the crowds. Forward Lukas Podolski posted a selfie with Schweinsteiger and the trophy. He tweeted: “The Cup is in Berlin!!!” — Sapa-AP.

ARD work displayed by the officials, coaches and the local Department of Sports and Recreation paid off when two netball teams (U19 girls and boys open) performed well during the national U19 netball championships (men and women) in Durban last week. The two teams that represented uMgungundlovu during the week long Netball South Africa tourna ment surprised their opponents and netball followers, in Durban’s Hoy Park, who came out in their numbers. The uMgungundlovu mens team started the early games on a high note, collecting valuable points to make it all the way to the finals. Local netball development officer, and uMgungundlovu coach based in Sobantu, Arthur Maseko told Echo that his team was happy to be seen as the underdogs and work from the back. “We enjoyed our underdogs tag from day one. At prize-giving, extra mention of the good The Duzi-Umngeni Conservation Trust (DUCT) does for the river the runners had experienced that day was made. Fifty percent of the funds raised through the series go to DUCT who have had a major positive impact on the river systems around Pietermaritzburg and Durban. Two lucky winners also made off with R500 Brooks Trail shoe vouchers to finish off a great morning of trail running. With The Talbot Trail Run Series setting the tone for the KZN trail season, we have some amazing trail runs to look forward to for the remainder of the year.
