Big crowd expected at jazz event in city

ECHO REPORTER

T

HOUSANDS of jazz lovers are expected to flock to the Woodburn stadium on 27 October as the city celebrates its 175th birthday with a jazz in the park concert. The concert known as ‘Celebrating 175 years of PMB City of Choice’ is organised by the Msunduzi municipality in partnership with Jazz Cultural Feast Events Company. Event organiser, Nkanyezi Cele said: “We are expecting to attract a crowd of more than 5 000 people. People must come in numbers as this will be the first of its kind, with 99% being live music and 90% of musicians being KZN artists. “In most jazz festivals, artists from other provinces dominate which will not be the case. The concert has received a positive response from many local companies”. The concert starts at 10am and performing artists include Zakes Bantwini, Joel Zuma, Mbuso Khoza, Asanda Bam, Xolisa, Nomalanga Hlubi, Soul Sound, Madala Kunene, Mabi Thobejane, Loxion Jamz, Bheki Nqoko and Unplugged and Sthembile. The first 1000 people to arrive will receive giveaways. Entrance fee is R150 and R500 for VIPs. Businesses may book tables for 10 at R5000, each inclusive of food, drinks and t-shirts. Tickets are available at Msunduzi Tourism, Capellos and at the gate.

Collecting for Jika–Joe fire victims T

HEcampaigntocollectclothesforJika–Joeinformal settlement fire victims has intensified in areas under Ward 34, including Eastwood, Panorama, Glenwood, Cinderella Park and Thembalihle. Ward 34, under Councillor Eunice Majola, started collecting clothes and blankets a fortnight ago but the rainy weather and cold conditions disrupted the campaign. Majola said this is an exercise to ask residents in the Ward 34 community, and other surrounding areas, to open their hearts and extend ahelping hand by reaching out to the needy. “What recently happened at the Jika–Joe informal settlement can happen anywhere. Let’s all show some humanity and donate some clothes or blankets for our people. They need our help and the conditions are not looking good,”said Majola. Old clothes for adults and children, blankets or any typeofdonationscanbedroppedoffatthecounciloffice at Eastwood Civic Centre or at 8 Redwood Crescent for Panorama residents. Campaign co-ordinator Jerry Barnes this week said already the first box is full, but the aim is to take at least two boxes of clothing to the needy Jika–Joe residents. “I just believe we can do more. I’m encouraged by the kindness displayed by Ward 34 people so far, especially those who live in Panorama.” Potential donors or people who want to drop off clothes or blankets can contact Barnes at 083 521 9553 or jerryb.barnes228@gmail.com - Supplied

The Arts and Culture Department should learn to take our artists seriously

SIYABONGA MSHENGU

W

HEN the ANC established its de partment of arts and culture (DAC) in 1982, it was not just a mere amorphous and ludicrous gesture, but it was initiated to mobilise South Afri can cultural workers at home and abroad. It was also to engage a broad range of peo ple in the culture of protest and resistance, its goal broadly being the democratic transformation of arts and culture in our country. For decades instruments of division and subjugation, arts and culture were seen by the DAC as unifying tools of liberation for all South Africans. In 1993 the Culture and Development Con ferences (CDC), convened by former ANC president Oliver Tambo, was held in Johan nesburg, primarily to draw up an inclusive and nonsectarian national arts and cul ture policy for South Africa. The important thing about CDC is that it was not con cerned with questions of liberation, but that of governance. Some of its objectives were: to bring to gether creative workers from across the cultural and political spectrum and pro vide a showcase for their work and crea tions, and to provide a platform for all stakeholders to make their contribution to developing a new culture dispensation.

The call for a ministry of arts and culture wassoundedatthisconference, andshort ly after the election, the ministry was formed with Dr. Ben Ngubane at the head and Winnie Mandela as his deputy. All the above mentioned efforts demanded a lot of seriousness, commitment and dedica tion on the part of the ANC, and it was not a child’s play. But since the attainment of our freedom in 1994, it seems as if our department of arts and culture has forgotten that it was created on the premise of transforming South Africa’s cultural landscape for the better. Our artists are perishing in destitu tioninthepresenceoftheDAC.Artisticand cultural organisations struggle to get fi nancial assistance from the department. The reason being that it is highly bureau cratic and this bureaucracy being the main cause of its inefficiency and dysfunctional ity. These faceless, cynical and jealous offi cials with their red tape, who perceive and treat arts and culture with frivolity and in sensitivity, are the chief stumbling block to the development of our artists. Let alone theirnotbeingpassionateandknowledge able about the arts, they are there, just like anyotheremployees, tosupporttheirfam ilies. Foryears,Itogetherwithlocaljazzguitarist Zazi Mncube, bass player Langa Mthalane, Vusi Msomi and Sabelo Mwandla, both the actors, tried to approach the department to assist our Take Four Musical Organisa tion, tonoavail.Thistranspireddespitethe

factthatwehadalltherequireddocumen tation. When we realized that they were utterlyreluctanttoassistus, itbecameviv idly clear to us that pestering them was a futile exercise. Bhekabona Qwabe, the late freelance drummer, and Smanga Zibula, the guitar ist for the local jazz band, Fate for Africa, are some of our highly talented musicians who died without having been supported in their creative endeavours. Even the art istswhocalledthemselves,uMgungundlo vu Concerned Artists, under the chairman ship of Kwenza Mthembu, in June this year, raisedthismatterofourartistsbeingtaken for granted by the department, with the MEC for Arts and Culture, Ntombikayise Sibhidla Saphetha. These departments of ours are very good in terms of returning funds allocated to them back to the National Treasury, but extremely incompetent when it comes to spending them to the benefit of eligible people. South Africa is a land of plenty, so seeing our artists suffering is iniquitous. But then how do we expect our artists in this part of the world to flourish when our very current national minister of arts and culture, Paul Mashatile, regarded his ap pointment to head the ministry, as a politi cal demotion? Do you think our honoura ble minister who feels as having been rele gated can work diligently to address the plight of our creative workers? Do our mu nicipalities together with their ward coun cillors comprehend the importance of the arts in their communities?

OSMANS

I received with jubilation the news that Winston Churchill Theatre had been re vamped. But how do we take pride in the physical structure of the hospital without cherishinghealthpractitioners, andisn’tri diculous to admire a university’s exquisite ness and denigrate its lecturers? South Africa has a high rate of unemploy ment, and in the ranks of the unemployed wehaveartistswhoonlyneedgovernment support to do their creative work, which could help in the reduction of unemploy ment. Even the private sector has the so cial responsibility to assist our artists. How do you explain the philanthropy character ized by selectivity, the philanthropist who can’t operate without the media? Should our good Samaritans be selective in terms ofrescuingtheindigentartists?Shouldthe wholeworldknowwhenIhavebeenassist ed, and is being generous quietly not bene ficial or an anathema? I don’t think know ing why some of our philanthropists can’t be dissociated from politicians, and vice versa, is a problem. The indispensability of the arts in human existence is indisputable, and music is a classic example: weddings, parties, cele brations, churches, funerals, politicalgath erings, electronic media, schools and other settings, music plays a pivotal role and is unavoidable. The contribution of our musi cians in the political struggle can never be disdained and trivialised. Our theatres have always been sacred spaces because our stories, poems, music and dance have been soldiers that escalat

ed the liberation struggle which ultimately dismantled oppression. Theatre in South Africa has always been a dynamic forum that has given us courage to grapple with the state of our nation. Our writers, stand up comedians, satirists and community based artists have utilised their immense and remarkable talents to create and nur ture a climate that has allowed us all to become active participants in our democ racy. Our artists are our nation’s conscience; they give us a window on our world, but also give us glimpse of an imaginary world. They have incredible gift of uniting us all in a common celebration of humanity when we are able to laugh, cry, feel sorrow and experience hope. Musa Nkuna, a supremely gifted South Af ricanoperasinger, says:“Weareculture,we define our own culture, and we are respon sible for our culture. Because culture is so cial glue that keeps societies and commu nities together, any little crack will cause things to fall apart. We earnestly entreat and appeal to the department of arts and culture to change their attitude towards our artists, this thing of belittling our artists should come to an end. Our society, as well, should take arts and culture seriously, for the nation that doesn’t embrace its cultural aspect is doomed to deteriorate. Siyabonga Mshengu is an artist and secretary of KwaPata school governing body.

TALKING FOOTBALL

THABO DLADLA PRESENTLY, the majority of us seek more faults and weaknesses than solutions for South African foot ball. We are failing to understand that the future and the strength of our game depends on everyone in volved. We need to move away from the thinking that indi viduals can provide all solutions. It is not by chance that other nations are doing well. There is always the right or correct way of doing things. South Afri cans must start to do things the right way. This is a simple formula for success. We cannot claim to be a football loving nation while there are no facilities. Government cannot claim to be behind football while facilities in most areas are either in disrepair or nonexistent. Play ers need decent training and competition fields to develop their skills. The numbers that Danny Jor danistalkingaboutintermsofplayersandmatch es will not materialise without facilities. We are a country that has no respect for sports. It is the last thing in our priorities. We find it easy toerecttentsandparkvehiclestherebydestroying the turf. People do not understand the value of quality facilities in terms of training and competi tion. It is also obvious that the understanding and appreciation for quality fields will take many years to materialize. It takes some time to change the thinking through training and education. A country that hosted the top world footballers in 2010 has no business subjecting their children to play under dangerous conditions. We cannot be talking of unmarked fields with uncut turf in 2013. Theconditionsdonotencourageouryoungtotake up this beautiful game. I think we spend a lot of energy talking about useless rights for young peo ple. The right to play and develop sporting skills

is being violated in our country. Football is more about what happens inside the field than many useless things people talk about. It is about dominating the ball and making the right deci sions. Football is both an art and science. Young peo ple therefore need to be trained to develop their abili ties. Trainers/ coaches themselves need to be em powered with knowledge and skills. We need to develop a culture of excellence in foot ball. Managers, referees, coaches and players should strive to do their best. Aristotle says: “We are what we repeatedly do; excellence then is not an act but a habit.” If nations like Germany and Brazil can do it, nothing can stop us.Unzima lo mthwalo!
