Cansa continues to support Canola oil NICOLE JOHN

>>news@myecho.co.za

T

HE Cancer Association of South Africa (Cansa) has categorically refuted the recent statements by Tim Noakes regarding the toxicity of Canola Oil, and his appeal to the public to avoid it. Cansa has, for many years, encouraged its patients to use Canola Oil and promoted it as a healthy lifestyle choice. Cansa head of research, Carl Albrecht, said in the statement that there has not been a single crediblereportworldwidethathasfoundCanola oil to be toxic and unfit to consume. “Cansa respects the Food Safety Division of the National Department of Health who has neverissuedanywarningconcerningCanolaoil, nor has any other similar body in the world.”

Albrecht added that the department had approved the Cansa “Smart Choice’ Seal on all Canola products in 2011. Noake’s book, The Real Meal Revolution, states that Canola oil was considered to be toxic and should be avoided. Cansa, in response, has issued a statement that Canola is the smart choice and have awarded the Cansa ‘Smart Choice’ seal to all Canola oil and Canola margarine brands (produced from South African grown GMO-free Canola) for more than ten years. Lisa Strydom, regional manager of Cansa, said that Canola oil has a number of well-researched and documented advantages over other oils. Strydom explained that some of the benefits of Canola oil includes that it has a lower level of saturated fat than any other cooking oil and is

free of both cholesterol and trans fat. It also has an excellent ratio of omega-6 to omega-3 (2:1) which has been shown to be optimal for good health and has a higher smoking point than most other oils, so can be safely heated to higher temperatures which results in less oil retention in food, especially when deep frying. “In terms of the Noakes claim that the oil is toxic, Canola oil has been rigorously tested over several decades by a number of authoritative scientific bodies internationally, including the United States, Canada, New Zealand, Australia and South Africa, and found to be suitable for human consumption,” said Strydom. An analysis of peer-reviewed literature has informed Cansa that there is a good balance betweenomega-6andomega-3fattyacidsfound within Canola oil which could help to reduce the risk of cancer. “While both omega-3 and omega-6 are essential for normal functioning, our bodies cannot produce them, so they must be obtained through the diet. However, research has also shown that too much omega-6 can increase the risk of some cancers, while omega-3 can lower the risk, hence the need to balance these appropriately,” said Strydom. In order to find out what the trans fats situation was in South Africa, Cansa commissioned a number of studies. Trans fats were measured in 40 different margarines by the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) in SA. According to the Cansa report, not a single margarine showed trans fats levels above two percent being the legal limit for food in South Africa. In addition, CANSA requested a senior lipid scientist at a South African university to analyse various Canola oil samples for trans fats and found that the amount of trans fats was below one percent in crude, purified and commercial Canola oil. The report added that in South Africa, the amount of trans fats in the Canola oil analysed for Cansa, in South Africa, is well within the legal limitandcannot, accordingtologicandscientific analysis, be called toxic. “There’s no credible evidence from any source whatsoever that South African Canola oil is toxic. “If there was, we’d expect the Department of Health, Food Safety Division as well as the supermarkets, to immediately remove Canola oil from the shelves,” said Albrecht. Cansa will continue to recognise and support local Canola oil and Canola margarine with the Cansa ‘Smart Choice’ Seal as it has done for many years. HIPSS project piloted in Umgungundlovu NICOLE JOHN AND CHARNE PAYNE >>news@myecho.co.za

THE HIV Incidents Provincial Surveillance System Project (HIPSS) launched the pilot project of a three year survey on HIV prevention and treatment in the UMgungundlovu district municipality. Epicentre is a dynamic company with a proven track record in delivering health programmes across the country, with the aim of preventing health problems by implementing educational programmes, developing policies and conducting research. CEO of Epicentre, Cherie Cawood, said that HIPSS would give some indication of whether or not these interventions were likely to reduce the number of new HIV infections. HIPSS is funded by the American Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) which aims in assisting nongovernmental and community-based organizations working with HIV. “The HIPSS study provides an important opportunity to study the effects of plannedinterventionsonHIVincidentsin a province that is affected by the HIV epidemic,” said Nancy Knight, CDC South Africa’s country director. The HIPSS project involves workers from Epicentre visiting previously identified communities and conducting tests on participants.Theinformationisrecorded on a tablet and immediately imported to a resource centre and stored for analysis. “There is no concern about the privacy of results should the tablet get lost, as all information is exported immediately off thetabletintotheresourcecentre.Participants are not registered by name but rather identified by their fingerprint so privacy is at a high level to ensure that their status is not public information,” said Cawood. The survey currently includes 10 000 people with a follow up selecting 7 000 of the original participants 12 months later to determine if their education on HIV/ Aids has been successful as well as what has influenced new cases of HIV. TheprojectbeganintheVulindlelaand Greater Edendale areas in July this year. Cawood said that they have received great reception and participation from the communities involved. She added that each household head and participants would be referred to clinics to access health care needed. In addition, they would have immediate access to all the laboratory results which will be immediately linked to care and support. “The difference with this research is that it occurs in real time so people don’t have to wait months for the information to be analysed, they get results immediately,” said Cawood. Speaking at the launch David Khanyile, HIPSS programme manager, said that althoughtheprogrammemaybe restricted to certain areas, he hoped to make an impact on human lives through HIPSS. “If the project is successful in the pilot area, UMgungundlovu, then there is potential for it to be rolled out throughout the province and possibly across the country,” said Khanyile.

Municipal employees break road rules NQOBILE MTOLO

>>news@myecho.co.za

DESPITE the adoption of the Msunduzi municipality’s new fleet management policy in 2012, the municipality is repeatedly faced with municipal employees who speed and break parking regulations while using council vehicles. All municipal departments were informed of the contents of the policy and consequences of not adhering to the policy The recent report on the status of outstanding traffic fines for municipal vehicles states that there were 75 speeding fines and two parking fines issued out to Msunduzi employees while using council vehicles between July last year and January this year. These fines add up to R26 700. The updated report is expected to be tabled at the Executive Committee (Exco). In a report tabled at the previous Exco meeting, more than six council vehicles on various occasions had traffic offences. Municipal manager Mxolisi Nkosi said that a former proxy for the municipality, who resigned in July this year, continues to be

bombarded with all traffic fines for municipal vehicles. In general, the trafficauthoritiesissuetrafficfines of all registered council owned vehicles in the name of the proxy of the municipality. Exco member Judith Lawrence saidthatasidefromthepaymentof the traffic fines, further action should be taken against offending drivers. “They are not learning their lesson. Should we impose our own fine against them for bringing the municipality into disrepute?” asked Lawrence. The report on outstanding municipal traffic fines states that when the municipality was under administration, the processes on identifying offending municipal drivers did not occur and this led to an accumulation of the traffic fines at the fleet management office. According to the Road Traffic Act, the municipality will not be responsible for making payments due to traffic and parking infringements. Municipal employees are also expected to ensure that the vehicles they use are in a roadworthy condition because if that does not happen, the employees in possession of the un-roadworthy vehicle will be responsible for the payment of the traffic fines imposed. With some municipal drivers not paying their traffic fines, some of the fines issued will develop into warrants of arrest against certain drivers. “As part of dealing with that, we are recommending that all departmental heads use trip authority sheets to identify all the particularsofthedriverswhowere responsible for the cars when

these tickets were incurred. Fleet management must keep a register where all incoming traffic contraventions can be recorded and then disseminate these traffic fines to relevant departmental heads concerned to obtain full particulars of the offending drivers.

“The responsibility to apply for corrective measures against the defaulting officials who habitually commit traffic offences whilst driving council vehicles lies with the business heads for their respective departments,” said municipal manager Mxolisi Nkosi.

Her second home NOMPENDULO NGUBANE

>>nompendulo.ngubane@myecho.co.za

E

UNICE Sizeka recently celebrated 26 years of working at Hayfields Veterinary Hospital. The 57 year old from Imbali Unit 18 said that her place of work has become her second home. Sizeka said her journey with the hospital started in 1989 after she had applied for a position as cleaner. “After they interviewed me, I was called in to start for duty. I was very excited when they asked when I could start - I told them I would

start the next day and left my job that I had at the time. “My journey with the hospital started in the month of August. It has been a long walk and days of happiness have been more than those of sadness. “I have grown in knowing each and every person that works in the hospital and I have seen many staff members coming and going. I started as a cleaner but now I am able to assist in the theatre,” she said. Sizeka is a mother of a 31 year old son who is also a doctor, and a grandmother of seven grandchildren. “I’m grateful for the love and respect that I have received through all of these years. They have all been so kind to me and have treated me like their own mother. “I’m at the age where I get tired before midday and they understand that. It’s been great years of service and I’m forever thankful for everything,” said Sizeka. Hayfields Veterinary Hospital celebrated the achievement by awarding Sizeka a watch and a cheque.

>>news@myecho.co.za YOUTH For Christ (YFC), staying true to its mission to bring hope to children and youth in and from disadvantaged communities, has successfully reunited a disabled man living on the streets for many years with his family. Speaking to Echo, Simphiwe Sithole YFC outreach coordinator said that during their rounds visiting various street children in Pietermaritzburg, two YFC interns discovered a man living on the street near Mysore Road. Sithole said that it was clear that the man, who is said to be in his 30’s and whose identity will remain anonymous, was mentally disturbed and in a critical condition, but wanted to be reunited with his family. After intervention from the YFC team, Sithole managed to find out that the man’s family lived in Mafakatini in Elandskop, but that his brother worked as a taxi driver in the city. Sithole said that the team visited the taxi rank in town and spoke to various taxi drivers and conductors. “They were so helpful. Some of them even stopped working and helped us find the brother,” said Sithole. After enlisting the help of the rank manager to help him, Sithole and his team were successful and located the brother. “He is now back home with his family and is happy to be off the streets.” According to Sithole, the brother and grandmother both thought that their loved one had died because he had been living on the streets for many years. He was also able bodied when he left his home and was involved in an accident while living on the streets which rendered him disabled. He added that even though the man has been reunited with his family, the work for YFC has only just begun. “We want to continue counselling him and his family, firstly to help them adjust to his disability and secondly to help him apply for his ID so that he can start collecting a grant,” said Sithole. Sithole placed on record his sincere thanks to Azgar Mapenye, Nse Lami and rank manager Xolani Ndlela for assisting YFC with their reunification process. “Often we have a negative mentality towards taxi drivers and conductors, but these men went above and beyond to help us and for that we are forever grateful.”

Sustainable programmes for people with disabilities NQOBILE MTOLO

>>news@myecho.co.za THE Msunduzi Municipality is working on plans to introduce sustainable programmes for people living with disabilities in the Msunduzi area. These programmes have been proposed by the mayor’s office for the mayoral special projects. Speaking at the Executive Committee (Exco) meeting, municipal manager Mxolisi Nkosi said that in the past, the programmes on people living with disabilities were eventbased and the suggestion was that they have more sustainable programmes. Some of these programmes include training, business support, agriculture and educational programmes. Exco member Jabu Ngubo said that the item is long overdue and that when it comes to employment opportunities, the municipality should also consider fulfilling mandates of the employment equity by hiring those people who live with disabilities. “WeshouldtrytolookatmorethantheExpanded Public Works Programme (EPWP) programmes and Community Work Programme (CWP) programmes for their employment so that we can do a dent in the two percent that is a requirement,” she said.

A call to fight the ECHO scourge of hunger

September 18, 2014

maritzburg

ECHO REPORTER

I

N a bid to urge the government, companies and individuals to help end the scourge of hunger, Oxfam, an international organisation will host a campaign on food and climate change at the Imperial hotel next month. Oxfam is a global confederation of 17 affiliates dedicated to fighting poverty and injustice around the world. According to research, one in four people in South Africa face hunger and the number of children who are stunted due to hunger has increased to over 25%. “Government has a food security strategy in place and it is in the process of being updated, but it is clearly not enough. In order to address the problem, we need stronger policies and policy implementation. “We are looking for people to work with who can help expose the scandal of hunger,

DUT awards The DUT student housing department (midlands campus) hosted their fourth annual student housing awards. The aim is to recognise those who have excelled in programmes that have been going throughout the year. encouraging outrage, stimulating discussion and finding solutions to eradicate it. Climate change now poses the greatest threat to hunger, with 50 million more people predicted to go hungry by 2050 if it is not addressed,” said media liaison officer of Oxfam Philisiwe Mthimkulu. Further to research, it has been established that women and female children are the ones affected by hunger the most. Despite doing the same jobs with their male counterparts, they earn less than them and as a result, struggle to put food on the table. “Most women are breadwinners, and it becomes even more of a burden when they have to take care of family members affected with the HIV virus as they need to have money. In order to fight this scourge, government policies should focus on creating more employment opportunities and increasing agricultural produce,” ended Mthimkulu.

>>nompendulo.ngubane@myecho.co.za LOCAL Jazz artist, Zazi Mncube, has released his second album called “After Working Hard”. The album has 16 tracks which are a contemporary jazz and afro fusion. Mncube has worked with Bheki Khumalo, Sandile Zulu, Mthobisi Mthalane and Mzwakhe Shezi in making this album a success. He said that the title of the album is a reflection of the struggles that he went through before it was released. “A lot happened before I could finish the album. While I was busy brewing it, I got involved in a car

It’s in honour of my journey and the struggles that I went through. “I have tracks that I love and some of them were produced based on experience and things that I went through. “Some of my favourite tracks are Saphela Isizwe and Westgate. These are some of the tracks that are close to my heart. The composition of the track Westgate came about while I was in Westgate. “There is another track called Usizi which is a track that I composed when I was lying in a hospital bed,” he said. Phendulani Literacy Quiz 2014 ECHO REPORTER

T

HE sixth annual Phendulani Literacy Quiz gets underway this month, with regional competitions taking place throughout the country. Grade six and seven pupils from over 40 under-resourced schools in South Africa will put their literacy knowledge to the test when they are quizzed on 20 books. The quiz aims to develop the literary knowledge and comprehension skills of pupils through reading. Pupils were given access to each of the 21 books included in the reading

list in April this year, and will be tested on questions based on themes from each book. They read the books and are then asked questions about them while competing against pupils from various schools in their region. Marj Brown, founder of the quiz, said that Phendulani was started becausethereisalackofbasicliteracy in South Africa. “There is an urgent need to enhance the comprehension skills of learners who do not have access to libraries and reading material to help educate them. The quiz is a fun way to get

children involved and excited about reading.” Throughgenerousdonationsfrom individuals, publishers, and funds raised by better resourced schools, more than 1000 books were donated in support of the quiz. The book list includes Diary of a Wimpy Kid, Children’s Madiba, The Christmas Mystery, Mr Nobody’s Eyes and The Girl who married a Ghost. The themes for 2014 are: courage, life lessons, school and family life and folk tales. The Phendulani Literacy Quiz takes place in five regions across the country and includes schools in Port

Kia Picanto, awesome, amplified

T

HE secondgeneration Kia Picanto has been turning heads since making its global premiere at the 2011 Geneva Motor Show and local market introduction in 2011. Three years later, the Picanto remains one of the most striking and comprehensively equipped vehicles in its segment. In South Africa, the Picanto took top honours in the People's Wheels Awards for three years in a row (2011, 2012 and 2013), has won numerous 'Best Buy' awards from major publications, and was elected a finalist in the 2012 WesBank/SAGMJ Car of the Year competition. While the twomodel Picanto lineup remains unchanged, enhancements to the exterior endows it with a sportier face thanks to a revised 'tiger nose' grille and a restyled front bumper. The Picanto's sculpted side profile and uncluttered rear styling remains unchanged. The1.0LXshipswith14inchsteelwheelswith full wheel covers, while the 1.2 EX features sporty 14inch alloys. Following this excellent performance, the 308 range welcomes two dynamic new versions and on both Hatchback and SW body styles. Behind the wheel of these new versions, whether the GT 205 or GT 180 fitted with the 1.6-litre THP 205 Stop&Start six-speed manual and the 2.0-litre BlueHDi 180 EAT6 engines respectively, drivers will appreciate theremarkableperformanceofthesevehicles. The 308 GT’s front end now houses the lion in the grille with three horizontal blades on either side of the emblem and LED lighting used throughout. From behind, the 308 GT is striking for its posture as the GT signature is integrated in the grill, the tailgate and the front wheel panels. The range of colours for the 308 GT include the new Magnetic Blue. To deliver maximum enjoyment, the GT makes the most of a chassis with specific settings and high performance engines. Engineers used all of the brand’s expertise to achieve a remarkable power to weight ratio of just 5.85kg/hp for the petrol 308 GT.

Acceleration from 0 to 100km/h, takes the petrol 308 GT just 7,5 seconds. The four-cylinder 1.6-litre THP 205 Stop&Startengineisspecifiedwithasix-speed manualgearboxtomakethemostofits285Nm of torque, available between 1 750 and 4 500rpm. This diesel engine is coupled to an EAT6 automatic gearbox. It uses Quickshift technology for fast gear changes, as well as the abilitytodown-shiftautomaticallytothespeed required rather than in sequential order. Furthermore, its efficiency is almost the same as for a manual gearbox due to reduced internal friction and the use of torque converters applied whenever needed to avoid transmission slip. Performance of this level demands an effective braking system and this is provided by a Bosch 9CE central unit distributing the braking effort between the four discs. At the front, the 330mm diameter and 30mm thick discs are gripped by floating calipers with 60mm pistons. At the rear, the discs are 268mm diameter on 308 GT and 290mm on 308 GT SW. Both engines types have switchable ESP as standard.

Chris Matombo of Kaizer Chiefs clashes with Philani Zulu of Maritzburg United during the MultiChoice Diski Challenge match between the under 23s of these sides at King Zwelithini Stadium on Saturday. Teams are allowed to field three over age players in a game.

MultiChoice to educate players to use money wisely

D

AYS of uneducated players, senseless and unwise spending ofcashandfailuretoplanforthe future is to be a thing of the past in South African professional football. The newly launched MultiChoice Diski Challenge, under the PSL wing, is surely going to take local soccer and players’ future education to another level. According to the official sponsors, the MultiChoice Diski Challenge’s main aim is to transform the way local football players approach the game from a young age. The league is mainly for players under the age of 23, with three players over the age of 23 allowed per team. PSL chairman, Dr Irvin Khoza, said that the emphasis was on developing young players for the future. “Development in this country is a very big problem. Precision, quality and possession are some of the biggest challenges facing our youngsters,” he said. Khoza also emphasized the importance of teaching youngsters life skills and money management amongst, other things. “We will also teach young players how to manage their finances and life skills. We realised that the life of a

footballer is 12 years and if a player did not create his legacy during that period, he will have a problem in the future. These young players get a lot of money and they waste it because they are not taught how to spend it wisely,” explained Khoza. Pietermaritzburg development coach, and former African Wanderers and AmaZulu player who is also a teacher at Mehlokazulu secondary school, Zeph Mthembu says that to develop a fully professional and well versed player about life skills, career and future is a long term process. He fully agrees that soccer is a short term career and players need to invest wisely during their playing days. “A human body is not designed to play forever and your future as a player is something else. You have got to invest from day one. Projects such as the Multi-Choice Diski Challenge need to be encouraged and we need to see more companies coming on board,” said Mthembu. To give a taste to soccer fans of what is in store for them, the first official fixtures of the Reserve League took place at Durban’s King Zwelithini Stadium last weekend. Most of the PSL giants also gave their fringe players a chance to play.

The Orlando Pirates team was coached by Augusto Palacious. The Mighty Bucs were able to outwit their opponents of the day AmaZulu 1-0. Another PSL giant, Kaizer Chiefs, were guided by their former star midfielder Donald “Ace”Khuse. Amakhosi were also able to edge out Maritzburg United via a penalty. In other fixtures, BidVest Wits and PlatinumStarsplayedtoaonealldraw. Bloemfontein Celtics and University of Pretoria played a goalless draw. Training effectively ITSEEMSthatwedonotappreciatethe importance of correct training in the development of footballers. There is too much emphasis on competition, hence very little progress has been made in the last few years. Training that does not consider specificity and complexity of the game is likely to delay the progress. Movements, decisions, actions etc. are triggered by the ball. Presently, the majority of players are subjected to simplistic training daily. It is noted, for example, that many footballers still engage in long hours of intensive, plain running. This does not help to optimise players’ performance in actual game conditions. Endurance in football is affected by many factors, including mental tasks, technical executions, field conditions, weather, opposition etc. Factors of performance should not

TALKING FOOTBALL

THABO DLADLA be trained separately if development and performance is to improve. The level of performance at which a player will perform is mainly decided by the degree at which his development was accomplished. The relevancy and quality of training received at performance level is very important. This poses challenges for football coaches to improve their professional

skills of training and coaching. We therefore need honest answers to this question: Are South African football coaches equipped to empower and train local footballers effectively? Are we equipped to plan training programmes that addresses cognitive components?Modernfootballtraining should train perceptual ability, attention, concentration, emotioncontrol and motivation. The modern football coach should be more of a brain trainer than a great motivator. Generally, our players’ lack of peripheral vision affects their tactical play. It is important therefore that coaches empower themselves with knowledge and skills to develop specific and complex football training sessions. This will ensure that our footballers are on a par with their peers from other parts of the world. Unzima lo mthwalo!

Pirates captain, and long serving player, Lucky Lekgwati said the team that will win on Saturday will be the first one to score because it will be difficult to bounce back from being down. “A winning team would be a perfect one, with less mistakes, who isabletoscorefirstandwhoalsostays tight at the back for the entire match.” Former Chiefs ace striker Pollen Ndlanya said that the team that will win the match will be one with nerves of steel. “It’s all about a mental toughness.
