Living education, loving education OUR front page story this week is all about our highly successful Spelling Bee competition, which members of the public will be able to attend and watch in August. SoeffectivehastheeventbeenthattheOffice of the Premier has partnered with us this year totakethecompetitionfromonearea(Zululand –wherethecompetitionoriginated)andextend it over the entire province. We are immensely proud of our Spelling Bee,whichwebelievehastheabilityandpower to teach our local young people focus, discipline, determination and that fruit is borne from hard work. However, the event does not only benefit pupils. It creates an opportunity for schools and teachers to pool their intellectual resources to teach their charges with added gusto and enthusiasm. Teachers and schools are rewarded for the

DESIREE ERASMUS efforts of their spellers, as it takes many hours of tutoring to get pupils to the point of finalists. This has been clearly seen at our previous Zululand Spelling Bee, now in its fifth year, where teachers have put in countless hours of their own time on weekends and after hours to tutor entrants. And it always, without fail, pays off. If you are a teacher at a disadvantaged school where pupils speak English as a second language, we encourage you to enter your top spellers into the competition. Let’s work together to build youth who are stronger, healthier and brighter than we could imagine.

At the Business World Schools Challenge are pupils (back, from left) Virusan Naidoo, Sakhile Msweli, Siyanda Shange, Nqabisa Taliwe, Bongeka Sibiya, Thobeka Ngcobo, Lindani Dlamini, Zandile Makhaye, Anele Mtembu and Lunisani Makhathini with stakeholder representatives (front, from left) Dashen Pather, Niki Raw, Artwekk Hlengwa, Stacey Francis, Bamary Schalkwyk and Themba Mathe.

T

HE KwaZulu-Natal pilot for the Schools Enterprise Challenge has been launched in 60 schools in the province. The challenge is part of an overall mission to stimulate entrepreneurship and teach the youth correct financial habits in order for them to become aware of how finance works in the modern world.

Through the partnership with The Saville Foundation, The KwaZulu-Natal Financial Literacy Association and Business World, the competition was born. The aim of the Schools Enterprise Challenge pilot is to stimulate financial education in Grade 11 pupils through setting up small, student-led, sustainable businesses

within schools that generate income, as well as provide practical learning experiences where it pays to learn. The competition is designed to compliment the South African curriculum through stimulating innovative thinking and encouraging economic participation and self-empowerment from a young age.

SILVER Heights Secondary School scooped top honours at a recent Love to Live awards evening at Eddels Sports Club. The theme of this year’s campaign was “Human rights in South Africa”. Pupils has consistently displayed vibrancy, enthusiasm and zest in partici pating in the Love to Live games. Silver Heights produced six runners in the top 10 in the five kilometre fun run. In addition, it achieved first, second and third positions in the dance category, first and second positions in the song category, second and third positions in the sketch category and third position in the poster and essaywriting category. The highlight of the school’s achieve ment was the receipt of the School of the Year award. Silver Heights also received trophies for maximum overall participa

tion, maximum talent contest entries and maximum essay and poster entries. Silver Heights deputy principal, and events coordinator Bubs Armoogam, believes that exposure to a holistic education is vital to the success of an in dividual. Armoogam, principal Dina Moodley and staff have contributed to the overall achievement of pupils. According to Armoogam, consideration of contextual factors and identification of pupils’ unique talents is key to the success the school has achieved. Moodley praised the remarkable achievement of the school and applaud Armoogam’s dedication and tireless ef forts to involve pupils in activities both academic and nonacademic, so that they develop their confidence and self worth.

We remain trapped in ancient ways “TRUTH is dangerous. It topples and kills kings. It stirs gentle men into rage… wakes old grievances and open wounds. And yet there is one thing that is more dangerous than truth. Those who would silence truth’s voice are more destructive by far.” — Frances Hardinge. Speaking truth in South Africa can be dangerous, especially if it challenges long-held opinions and forces re-examination of fundamental beliefs. Impactful truth is not always easy to tell and to hear. It challengespeople, scarespeopleandsometimes offends people. It forces reassessment and rethinking, it

stimulates change and challenges the status quo. Here is one truth in South African football — we remain trapped in ancient ways administratively and technically. While the world is moving forward, we have decided to stick to unproven methods. How do you explain age restrictions in promotion-relegation leagues? Why do you put age restriction in second division and not in the premier league? Honoured by Msunduzi

THE Msunduzi Municipality can “help athletes within its jurisdiction on a needs basis”, according to mayor Chris Ndlela. Ndlela said this on Thursday after he was asked if the municipality can contribute towards the upliftment of those who did well in the Comrades Marathon on 1 June. This was during the municipality’s awards ceremony to honour 2014 Comrades winner, Bongumusa Mthembu, and 11 other race participants under the Greater Edendale Athletics Club who fared well in the down run. Among them is 25-year old Siphiwe Ndlela, who came 15th after entering the debut Comrades without any sponsorship. Mthembu was honoured with a personalised cup, a jacket and a certificate before full council, others were given certificates and golf

It also shows that the municipality recognises talent and hard work,” said Mthembu. DuringtheinterviewwithEcho, he shouted: “I have lost count as to how many of these I have received since winning the Comrades.” With these words he showed off his certificate and trophy he received from Ndlela for his marathon efforts. She said the event started small, but has now gone from strength to strength because when it started in 2012 only 1500 athletes participated, but the number grew to 5 500 in 2013 and this means an economic boost for the area. The economic activities and tourists are expected to boost the economy of uMngeniMunicipalityinthedaysleading up to the event and on the day, by millions. Prize money has grown from R300 000 in 2012 to R1 million. The overall male and female winners

Race director Johan van Staden said there will be other supporting races on the day, adding that the entry fee for the main event is R150, and entries close on June 30. It will start from Manaye hall in Imbali at 7 am and finish at the Mandela capture site at 1 pm and will be televised live by SABC for the six hours. The 2014 Comrades Marathon winner, Bongumusa Mthembu, was introduced as one of the race ambassadors. He told Echo that he will not be participating in the Mandela race but will be advising those who need to fine-tune their techniques for the race. “I will not put myself under pressure since this one happens too close to Comrades,” he said.

T LEAST 10 000 athletes from all over the world are gearing up to run in the third Mandela Day Marathon to be run from Imbali to Howick in August. The race will be the first after the death of South Africa’s first democratically elected president, Nelson Mandela (95) on 5 December 2013. The marathon was inaugurated by the uMgungundlovu District Municipality in 2012 to honour the legacy of the icon affectionately known as Madiba. The launch coincided with the commemoration of the 50th anniversary of the Rivonia Trial when 10 activists, including Mandela, Walter Sisulu, Denis Goldberg, Govan Mbeki, Lionel “Rusty” Bernstein, Ahmed Kathrada, Raymond Mhlaba, James Kantor, Elias Motsoaledi and Andrew Mlangeni were charged and found guilty of various strugglerelated activities that took place between 3 December 1963 and 12 June, 1964. Speakingatthelaunch attheMandela capture site in Howick, Co-operative Governance and Traditional Affairs MEC Nomusa Dube-Ncube said the marathon commemorates Mandela as one of the world’s greatest icons. “The choice of the marathon to celebrate the legacy of Madiba is a correct one.

“The marathon is widely regarded as one of the hardest sporting events and, as such, is a fitting discipline in which the athlete is called upon to demonstrate his or her prowess and triumph over his or her own fears of failure and physical limitations.” According to Dube-Ncube, this sporting event aims to remind people of the struggle once fought to give South Africans the freedom that at times, a few now take for granted. “It celebrates the legacy of the triumph of the human spirit and perseverance over intolerance and adversity.” Amplifying the tribute to Madiba, Mgungudlovu District Municipality mayor Yusuf Bhamjee said the race is held to remind all people not to forget Mandela’s legacy and to understand the trials and tribulations of a person who
