A total of 68 residents, including young children, were left with nothingafterthefire.WiththeirID books burnt to a crisp, the residentssaythatthiscouldmeanthat theywon’tbeabletovoteon7May. The cause of the fire is still unknown but residents suspect that a burning candle was the source. One resident who was affected is Mfanufikile Mzulwini. “We have lost everything. But losing our ID’s at this point in time was the last thing that we expected. Out of all those who lost their IDs, I was the only one who was able to go to Home Affairs and apply for another one. Others don’t have money to do so. “Most of them are unemployed and they have no money for the other documentation that is done at Home Affairs. The worry is that if no one comes and offers help to those that still need help, they won’t be able to vote. If anyone could come and assist with the ID issues, it would be appreciated,” said Mzulwini. Zinhle Mchunu said that she wants to vote and was looking forward to the coming elections. “We are appealing to the authorities to help us with the ID issue. There is a lot that we are not happyaboutastheresidentsofthe area. We would also appreciate if we are provided with permanent houses. “Cleanliness is also an issue in the area; the filthiness is at an alarming state. These are the same reasons we want to vote but we cannot do that without IDs,” she said.

Stranded Jika Joe residents who lost their IDs during the fire fear they won’t be able to vote. The Msunduzi Municipality is currently building 300 temporary houses for the residents in a bid to curb similar incidents.
Ward 33 councillor, Nalin Atwaru, said that she is aware of the fire incident and that had gone to the scene with the ward com-
mittee members. She said she can confirm that no one was hurt. “People that were affected were given soup and bread, “she said.

ITH only six days to go before the general elections, the mass of political posters on street poles is a very visual reminder.
As you drive or walk around Imbali, Ashdown, Snathing, KwaPata and other Greater Edendale areas, nobody could forget that it is nearly time for people to cast their vote. It’s the same display in town as various election posters on roads such as Langalibalele street compete
for the attention of voters. On FJ Sithole road, the road that intersects the different Units of Imbali, a young man by the name of Mduduzi Gumede said that he can’t wait for his second time to vote. The 25-year old Gumede said that he will be voting at Sinamuva school
primary which is his voting district and he is excited about it. He said that for this year’s general elections, he is seeing a huge variety of posters compared to the 2009 elections. “I don’t remember seeing such a variety of posters, especially, in townships that are known to be strongholds for other political parties. “Most of the time you would find posters of other political parties being removed from the poles or wherever they were put up. I’m not seeing that happening in Imbali as a whole, and that clearly shows that people are respecting democracy and as a young South African, I am happy,’ said Gumede. France location resident Ntombenhle Ngcobo, said as much as the posters are a reminder of the general elections, she is still undecided about voting on 7 May. Ngcobo said she is not happy with service delivery in France and she sees no reason to continue voting in this country. “The energy is gone. The people we vote for disappoint us when they are in power. I wish they could keep their promises. They make empty
promises and it doesn’t help us in any way, so for me voting is not really a priority. I will just have to go with my instinct on that day,” she said. A few days after the elections, the results will say which election posters and manifestoes rang true to the people’s needs and aspiration s.

ILLEGAL electricity connections will be a thing of the past for residents of Swapo, Nhlalakahle and Ezinketheni informal settlements, after an electrification project was officially launched on Tuesday. The project is an initiative of the Msunduzi municipality, in partnership with the Department of Finance. More than 2000 homes are set to benefit from this project worth R7 million. Speaking at the sod-turning ceremony at the Copesville sports grounds, city Mayor Chris Ndlela said: “It is not their fault that they do not have a legal electricity system, but it is the result of the apartheid regime. By electrifying the area, we are combating illegal connections and promoting social cohesion. “From last year until now, we have had about seven deaths caused by illegal electricity connections. Last year, an activist died on the ground while fighting for electricity connections. This electrification project will also honour his life, and all those who have been victims of electrocution.” KwaZulu-Natal Finance MEC Ina Cronje said that the project will kick off this month, and if all goes well, all the beneficiaries will have electricity by Christmas this year. “We are not where we want to be, but your time to have electricity has come. This will not only benefit these areas, neighbouring areas will also benefit. By stealing electricity, the electricity supply of neighbouring communities is also affected,”she said. WardcouncillorThandiNdlovusaidthatsheisgratefulthatpeople from the informal settlements will finally benefit. “I will now be able to walk freely, as this had already caused conflicts in the area”.

ealising that education was not only a government issue, members of ward 23 gathered and formed the Sakhisizwe community education programme to help the youth in the ward. The programme was formed in 2011anditwasofficiallyregisteredin 2012. Speaking to Echo, programme process facilitator Sbusiso Khanyile said their vision is to lend a hand to the youth in the areas of ward 23, especially those who can’t pursue their education to tertiary level. “There are schools that have not done well with their matric results in the past. One of the reasons the schools are not doing so well is the shortage of books. “Our main concern is exactly that, and we have knocked on some doors, asking for help with books. “We were successful with that initiative as Hilton College responded by giving books which we donated to some of the schools. “ One of the schools who we donated books to was able to do better in their matric pass rate last year,” said Khanyile. The school whose pass rate has gone up from 28% to 79% last year is

He said that in order for their organisation to be visible, they introduce themselves to schools. “In that way we are able to reach pupils that we can mentor and assist. What we do is, with the ten members that we have, each member mentors a group of 10 pupils. “After we have worked with them, we deploy them to skill institutions andwedoafollow-uponhowtheyare doing. “We are proud to say that we have alsomanagedtostoptheclosingofthe [Ashdown] library in the ward. “Thatwasalsopartofmakingsure that the youth are not being denied their right to learn,” he said. BHUNGANI KA MZOLO WHEN I heard of the ‘vote NO’ campaign of former MK operative and former intelligence minister Ronnie Kasrils, I initially thought that someone was telling a joke. I also thought he was mad to come up with a stunt like that. And when I heard his reasons for this mad action, that it was because of the corruption by certain ANC leaderswhohaveenrichedthemselvesattheexpense of the poor, I was then convinced that he has lost it altogether. It came across as if ‘Uncle Ronnie” somehow considered himself a selfappointed supervisor of the current leadership, and as a supervisor, he was not impressed with what they were doing, and because he was displeased with them, he was going to get the people to withhold their votes or to give it to some new parties until he, as the elder uncle, was satisfied that they were behaving in an exemplary way, at which time he was going to tell the voting masses to once again vote for the ANC. That is why the whole thing strikes me as insane. Getting the masses to vote for you is not like a tap which you can open or close at will. I doubt that even the muchloved Madiba, with all his charisma, could have gotten away with such a stunt. The most logical thing Kasrils should have done was to follow all those who had been expelled by the ANC: form his own organisation and then campaign for the election. That he did not do this shows an elementofdishonestyinhisclaims.Thatinfactmight be the reason why he has not been able to explain his rather loud silence during the arms deal debacle and the HIV/Aids controversy. Kasril’s hypocrisy and incredulous double stand ards only became clear when ANC secretarygeneral Gwede Mantashe explained that Kasrils was not in
good standing with the ANC as he last renewed his membership in 2008. Basically, what it means, is that comrade Kasrils has not been a member of the ANC for at least six years. Now here is the principle underlining his hypoc risy: If he did not renew his membership because he considered himself over that, having been in MK, being a minister, then why would he be taken aback if other leaders within his movement considered themselves to be deserving of the lavish lifestyle on account since they are veterans of the struggle too? He must answer that first. Clearly Kasril, just like the leaders he seeks to rubbish and condemn for their illfound ideas of enti tlement, himself seems to harbour his own delusions of grandeur. ItwouldseemtomethatifuncleRonniewasreally disgusted with corruption in his former party, he should have done one mad thing to end all this mad ness. With his background in military and intelligence, he should have canvassed his views amongst a select few in the army and MK and then stage a coup. The task of this coup would be to suspend the constitution and, in its stead, declare rule by decree. ThenhewouldtakeovertheSABCandannouncethat henceforth, the country was under military rule. Parliament would be suspended until fresh elections have been conducted in two to three years when the situation in the county had been stabilised. Then comrade Kasrils would announce that he was the commanderinchief of all armed forces and pres ident all rolled into one. He would announce that this dictatorship was aimed at bringing about radical changes with regards to the economy, the land, education, health, housing, police and the situation at our porous borders. Commander Kasrils would inform us that hence forth, no one person owned land, as all land belonged to the state. The minerals and all the wealth of the county, including control of banks, would be placed firmly in state hands. He would announce new state shall be called Azania and anyone who did not wish to live under those conditions were free to leave, as long as they left everything that belonged to this county well alone here. As the new state had committed itself towards fulfilling the needs of the revolution of the people of this county, all those who had stolen fom the people would be put in jail, to face people’s justice at a later stage. *Bhungani ka Mzolo is a media and social commentator.

MAN living Northdale has accused DA ward 28 councillor Nithia Govender of “humiliating and insulting” him in public at his office last week. Philani Mdladla (33) said Govender refused to give him a proof of residential letter due to the fact that his identity document (ID) had no stamp, which would have proved that he is a registered voter. Mdladla said he was issued a new ID after he had lost his old one that had a voting stamp. He said the reason for going there was to ask for a proof of residence letter which he needed at the garage from which he was buying a car. “I walked into his office and told him what I had come for. He saw my ID and refused to give me the proof of residence letter because it had no stamp. He told me that my ID had no stamp which is proof that I am not a registered voter.
“I tried explaining to him that I had lost my ID and that I was using the new one. He started calling me names infront of the people that were in the office. I feel that I was being humiliated, insulted and abused in public. I wanted help from him as the ward councillor but he failed to do that. Seeing that he was causingascene,IwenttothenearestANCoffice and they were able to help me. They gave me the proof of address because I had all the required documents,” said Mdladla. However Govender said Mdladla was a nasty young man who refused to listen when he told him what he needed from him. “I needed him to provide me with all the necessary documents but he failed to do that. We are obliged to have enough evidence that the person is a resident in the area and a registered voter. I did not get that from him. Instead he had the tender forms with him. I told him what I needed from him and he was unable to give it to me,” said Govender.

Jika Majika host gives back to the community NOMPENDULO NGUBANE
>>nompendulo.ngubane@myecho.co.za THEnameMpenduloButheleziwaspopularon the dance talent show Jika Majika on SABC 1 not so long ago. Continuing on unearthing new talent, Buthelezi hosted Zazise (introduce yourself) youth show in the city hall last Friday. Various artists performed to showcase their talent. The aim of the youth show was to shift them away from potentially using drugs, said Buthelezi. Different local groups were present and they performed on stage for the audience, which was mostly youth in uniform. Speaking to Echo, Buthelezi said he believes that Pietermaritzburg has a lot of talented artists who need support and exposure. “IlovethecityofPietermaritzburgandIlove the people of this town. Part and parcel of the
show was to show them love and to give back to the community who has been supportive of Mpendulo as a person. “In these days we find young people being a slave to drugs. It’s up to us to stand up and prevent this by getting them to explore their talent in music, dance, poetry or anything that helps them shine. I have enjoyed working with local groups and they have responded positively. I have met different groups that do different genres of music and poetry. It has been overwhelming seeing how talented and eager they are. They have enjoyed performing and they did their best on stage,” he said. He thanked the Mgungundlovu municipality for the support and trust they showed him with the project. “I would also like to thank all of the sponsors that assisted me. I would like to thank Nandos, Jonathans Spar, the mayor’s office and 100 Warriors that sponsored me with the sound system,” said Buthelezi. Some of the groups that performed were Dope Ink, Undivided Roots, and Ingoma. Buthelezi is available on Facebook as Mpendulo Buthelezi and on Twitter as mpenduloansa001.

THABO DLADLA BLACK South Africans in positions of power are a very interesting species. Generally, we tend to think that apartheid only affected the poor and uneducated. The decisions made by some of our brothers and sisters in higher echelons of power show the amount

The coaches in this programme identified and trained players that represented South Africa in various age-groupcompetitions.SouthAfrica would not have enjoyed the skills of Mbulelo Mabizela, Jimmy Tau, Papi Zothwane, Andile Cele, Siphesihle Ngobese. The list is endless. These are some of the sad stories that we have observed in a free South Africa. Black people find it difficult to empower and support their brothers and sisters. Lack of respect for local expertise is mind boggling. It will take South Africans another hundred years to

There are no quick fix methods in football. It is not surprising that very few people are willing to serve the game. Presently, there is very little being done at the lowest levels of the game.
