ICKERING is standing in the way of three organisations in the city getting their share of the R10 million in funcingbeingdistributedbythe Motsepe foundation in the Msunduzi Municipality. Chairman of the Motsepe Foundation, Patrice Motsepe, visited the city last month and invested R10 million to be used by city organisations in their development programs. He said that no funding wouldbegiventoorganisations without proper structures. According to chairman of the District Motsepe Foundation Funding and Development Forum, Caleb Mbokazi, most organisations have selected their representatives except youth, women and NGOs. “It was agreed that applicants for the funding would be given a funding document and a two page funding criteria document, butunfortunatelydueto non–elected structures, no progress has been made,” he said. Mbokazi added that they were given a deadline of 30 November where applicants would be notified of the outcome. “Since these organisations are still undecided of who to choose as they have not elected their representatives, funding forms have not even been distributed,” he said. The funding sectors include education, youth, women (Small Medium Micro Enterpise businesses and co-ops, religious or labour, traditional, sports (Arts & culture), music, NGOs and businesses.

Zulu 200, in association with the Airports Company of South Africa (ACSA), on behalf of Zulu King Goodwill Zwelithini kaBhekuzulu will stage Umgidi Welembe 2013, a cultural pageant in anticipation of the Bicentenary of the Zulu Nation in 2016. The year marks the 200th anniversary of the formation of the Zulu Nation by King Shaka kaSenzangakhona. Conceived and driven by CEO Mandla KaNozulu and chairman Duma Ndlovu, the Zulu 200 initiative seeks to enhance awareness of the multi–faceted historic and cultural landscapes that comprise the legacy of the Zulu Kingdom and its people. INDICATIONS are that the ongoing strike action by petrol attendants, under the National Metal Workers of South Africa (Numsa), might take longer than expected to be resolved. Thousands of petrol attendants embarked on a country–wide strike, demanding a R30 per hour pay increase, but employers are offering 7.5%. Numsa spokesperson Castro Ngobese said: “The strike will continue until the employer gives us the double digits increase instead of the 7.5% that is currently on offer. With the increase in food, clothing and transport, employees cannot keep up with the current economic de-

mands”. Ngobese said that most of the striking employees are breadwinners. “The current offer will not make any difference since they still need to have a transport budget from the amount,” he said. A female petrol attendant who spoke to Echo anonymously, said that they earn R670 a week which is not enough to cater for most of their basic needs. “We only earn R760 if we have worked from Monday to Sunday. Although I will not earn anything this month, I fully support the strike and we will continue until our demands are met. If they could only increase it to R1000 a week. With that small amount I have to support five family

members, pay school fees, buy food, pay water, electricity and clothing bills and travel to and from Imbali everyday, Sometimes you get unfair customers who fill up petrol and run away without paying. That amount is deducted from the same peanuts that we earn,” she said. She added that due to economic demands, some have returned to work and are risking their lives in order to support their families. Ngobese discouraged those union members who are harassing and threatening those who are not on strike. “Workers who are victimised because they are working should report this so that we can investigate”, he said.

Pietermaritzburg has 155 new nurses NOMPENDULO NGUBANE >>nompendulo.ngubane@mye cho.co.za

KWAZULU–NATAL Health MEC, Dr. Sibongiseni Dhlomo, has urged newly qualified nurses in the province to acquit themselves professionally while on duty. He said his department has been dealing with a litany of complaints from members of the community due to a ‘bad attitude’ displayed by some staff members at hospitals. Dhlomo was speaking at the graduationceremonyof155nurses at the Royal Showgrounds last Thursday. A total of 173 nurses graduated in Newcastle on the same day as well. All of the nurses are employed by the KZN Department of Health in different hospitals. Dhlomo said that the province of KZN has been found to be doing better when compared to other provinces. He said, however, that the only exception is the issue of “bad staff attitude”. “This has seen the province grappling with a meander of medico–legal cases, bad press coverage and a litany of complaints from members of the community. My message to you is – you know your background, and

you know where you come from. We appreciate that when given an opportunity to uplift yourself career–wise, you grabbed it with both hands. Now it is the time to put into practice what you have been learning,” he said. Dhlomo said the nurses in the province have been tasked with the term“Make Me Look like a Hospital”. This entails making the hospitals clean and reducing waiting times both at out–patient departments (OPD) and dispensaries, said the MEC. “They will also make medicine available, change staff attitude and make hospitals safe for both staff and patients,” said Dhlomo. Thabani Makhathini (31) from Imbali unit 18 was among the graduates. Hesaidhewashonouredbythe presence of the MEC at the ceremony. “It was the greatest moment of my life. I have always been passionate about nursing as a career. I have been enlightened in life as a whole and I have gained a lot of knowledge. As a person, I have a passion to take care of others,” he said. Makhathini is employed as a nurse at Northdale hospital which was part of an initiative by the department of health.

Debunking the popular myth about the revival of the ANCYL (Conclusion) MAFIKA DAMANE mNDEBELE AND THEMBINKOSI ‘GUERRILLA’ ZONDI

T

HE Role of the ANCYL in the Current Phase of the Struggle AS a way concluding, the ANC 53rd Conference observed “with deep concern [that] the state of the Youth League and its increasingly antagonistic relationship with its mother–body, seemingly defining itself outside of the political framework of the ANC”. It also noted the state of the NEC with key acting positions, and the emerging tendency in the League at different levels to recall and suspend members without due process. Thus it resolved that “the incoming NEC (National Executive Committee) should urgently intervene to address the situation of the ANC Youth League. The incoming NEC must, among other things, take all necessary measures to ensure that the League plays its proper role and acts within the policy and the constitution. The revival of the ANCYL is very important, since it would mutually reinforce the renewal of the ANC itself and would also mobilise the scores of young people, most of whom will be voting for the first time in 2014. The task teams must be under no illusion that the majority of the prospective ‘first–time–youth’ voters are ‘coconuts’, who either reside in urban areas or come from well–to– dofamiliessincethe2011Censusreport – cited above – debunks the myth that central to the revival of the ANCYL there must be an attempt to Americanise the ANCYL. The reality is that the ANCYL’s revivalprogrammustappealtothesignificant majority of youth under 35 years of age who live in households thatreceivelow–incomes, asalready alluded to in the preceding paragraphs. The ANCYL must continue to

push radical youth demands, which are in anyway those of the society. The Youth League must be nothing else but the parliament of the young people. We must see the society we seek to build within us. We need unity in action for a better and prospering society for all the youth of our country; Black, Indian, Coloured and White. The future of our country belongs to all the youth who live in it, irrespective of their colour. This unity will never be built throughfracturingordividingyoung people on the basis of who they are and what their colour is. Youth formations, especially within the national progressive fold, have the responsibility of championing the historical mandate of the ANC and the Alliance, thatoftransformingoursociety into a non–racial, non–sexist and democratic society. We hold, as the ANCYL, the responsibility of ensuring that the young people are liberated from economic and political bondage, especiallythosewhowerehistoricallyoppressed. Lastly, central to the restoration of the ANCYL is to give practical meaning to the Decade of the Cadre by deliberately ensuring that the ANC values of selflessness; self-respect; respect for the elders; revolutionary discipline; constructive criticism; self-criticism are popularised among the youth. These values are more important if we are to produce young people who are not suffering from the “mefirst–everyone–else–after” mentality. In other words, the revival of the ANCYL is not about being relevant to a minority of ‘coconuts’, but it is about moving beyond resuscitating Congress resolutions. The ANCYL’s revival program must also be about reminding the youth that their duty is to learn, learn

and learn as instructed by Lenin. This learning must be coupled with ideological clarity in terms of the youth’s role towards achieving theNationalDemocraticSociety through the National Democratic Revolution. The entitlement mentality must also be busted asunder and be replaced with a spirit of being a people’s servants with no interest except to recognise that the realreasonfortheexistenceoftheANCand its leagues is to serve our people *Mafika Damane Mndebele: is a member of Youth Communist League of South Africa National Committee and regional co-ordinator of the ANCYL Emalahleni region, while Thembinkosi ‘Guerrilla’Zondiis ANC branch secretary in the Moses Mabhida region and ANC KZN legislature Senior Researcher.

School’s cultural day Classy houses mushroom in rural areas PHOTO: NOMPENDULO NGUBANE

The Zimu's house in Snathing.

The days of expecting to see mansions and double storey houses only in town are over. NOMPENDULO NGUBANE finds out why.

HEN driving or walking around areas such as Snathing, Sweetwaters, Mpumuza and Elandskop, the eyes are caught by classy homes and one would swear it’s a drive or a walk around the Montrose or Hilton area. Could it be that people are finding the rural areas as places of comfort and peace, compared to the town environment and suburban areas? Dumezweni Zimu from Snathing and Patrick Mbambo from Elandskop gave some perspective on the issue. Zimu’s house is just along Snathing main road and it is a head–turner. Some of Zimu’s personal reasons for building his own castle in Snathing are investment, house value, comfort, peace and development, as he also looks at things with the eye of a businessman. “At my age, I take so many things into perspective when making a decision. Building a house is an investment and that shouldbeaccompaniedbythevalueofthat house. “I would start by saying that building a house is a better initiative than buying it. With the house you have built, you decide what to do. You decide what to add, what sort of paint or ceiling board you want. As the owner, you are the decision maker and

therefore you decide on everything,” said Zimu. He said that the value of the houses in town are completely different from the ones in the rural areas. “A R1.5millionhousebuiltinSnathing compared to the one built in town are very different. I have a huge site which could still accommodate another ten houses,” said Zimu. As a business driven person, he said, he would like to see people not being bothered by having to take a taxi to town for shopping. “Businessplansarealreadyinthepipeline and that would help to create employment opportunities. I believe that we should develop our own areas now, instead of shopping in town,” he said. For Mbambo, his roots are in Elandskopandit’swherehewouldliketobeburied. “I grew up in Elandskop and it’s where my comfort is. I am free to do my ceremonies without having anyone complaining about the slaughtering of a cow or goat,” he said. One other reason many people are flocking back to rural areas to build big houses, is that developments now abound in these areas. Before 1994, there were no tarred roads, no water and no electricity.

Thandanani Children’s Foundation coordinator, Bheki Madide, conducted a guid ed tour of child–headed families for Epworth School pupils who volunteered their services to paint a couple of classrooms, fix the play area and help with vegetable gardening at Snathing LP School recently. This is part of Thandana ni’s partnership program with business and schools to lend a hand in commu nity development, including rebuilding the homes of some of the 360 families that Thandanani is looking after, especially with regards to their welfare, health, education and developmental needs. Thandanani supports over 1 000 orphaned and vulnerable children from six different communities in the Vulindlela area.

MY ECHO SOAPIES GENERATIONS SCOTT believes the battle is far from over. Dineo turns to the elders to solve her mar riages woes. Mnqobi has a setback. The attraction between Phenyo and Noluntu is as strong as ever. Senzo gets devastat ing news from the paediatrician. Khethi we goes about her business, unaware she’s being spied on. Ruby swallows her pride and tells Patrick she needs his help. MJ is not ready to forgive and forget yet. Dineo is rattled to hear whose back in town. Choppa is chuffed when someone pays to get rid of him. The ‘stalker’ takes his plan one step further. Two illicit lovers, a betrayed wife and a gun make for a deadly mix. Noluntu wants to lay charges after her harrowing ordeal. Scott is shocked by what Khethiwe tells him. Sen zo only gets more hurt when he tries to share his pain. ISIDINGO THE modern world clashes head on with tradition in the Sibeko Towers. Caitlin sur prises Frank and commences her study of The Deep. Lerato and Sechaba get anoth er visit from the authorities. Caitlin sets the cat amongst The Deep’s pigeons. There is shock when it’s discovered who the new owner of ONTV is. Old secrets are stirring beneath the towers on Horizon Deep.LincolnSibekorisksthewrathofthe dead. Sechaba MatabaneMoloi goes vi ral. Caitlin’s investigation into the ques tion of who was responsible for the sabotage at Sibeko Gold’s mine yields a significant name. Sibe koGoldhasastrokeofgood fortune but bouts of dizziness in Lincoln suggest that not all is well with him. Lera to and Sechaba’s vi ral campaign to pro mote the shebeen’s mystery happy hours ricochets around the Deep. Caitlin walks a dangerous line as she attemptstogetthestory at all costs. The new Gold discovery unearths a lot more for Nikiwe. Lerato finds that happy hour is not entirely as happy as imagined.

Ridge and Taylor discuss the re cent events and how their chil dren’s lives have been affected by them. To add to the awk wardness of the occasion, Hope and Thomas find them selves facetoface with Liam and Steffy. While Thomas is busy helping Hope, Rick uses the opportunity to let Caroline know that he is still very much interested in her. Pam and Don na’s rivalry forges on as they bicker back and forth while sharing a desk at the Forrester reception area. The entity that administers the retirement benefits of municipal employees in KwaZulu–Natal was recently recognised for excellence. Seen with the awards (from left) are Bongi Mkhize (chief financial cfficer), Sam Camilleri (CEO/ principal officer) and Dominic Ilett (chief operating officer).

ADVERTORIAL The Checkout Supermarket Group has expanded its wings in KwaZulu-Natal’s “City of Choice” with the opening of its latest branch in the business hub of Pietermaritzburg. Nestled in the lively and bustling Pietermaritz Street, the latest Checkout outlet aims to expand its brand in the midlands driven by its motto “Quality, Service, Savings.”

MIDDLE AND LOWINCOME EARNERS TO RECEIVE THE BEST IN CHAIN STORE PRICING The Checkout brand is nationally renowned for its quality products offered at affordable pricing for all income earners. Checkout is the largest independent supermarket chain in South Africa and has been in the supermarket industry for the past 37 years. The Group has entrenched its footprint to seven of the nine provinces with more than 50 stores nationally offering superior pricing to all its customers. Its recipe for success has always been superior service levels with a customer centred ethos.

Checkout is fully conversant with the diverse PMB market as it has a proud trading history in the city centre for more than three decades. The decision to resurface in the “City of Choice” was to keep the Checkout brand available to the middle and lowincome earners to receive the best in chain store pricing at an easily accessible location. The new outlet is more spacious with a customer friendly ambiance offering a pleasant shopping experience. Together with basic food and essential grocery lines the store has a Butchery, Fruit, Veg, Bakery and a Deli Department giving our customers real all round value. “Customers can expect a bumper opening promotion with something for everyone.”

TALKING FOOTBALL

THABO DLADLA THABO DLADLA A CREATIVE footballer is the one who has a good football brain, is quick to read the game and has the ability to outfox the opposition defence with an outstanding piece of individual skill.

These are the types of players who can dribble, catch opponents off guard, sell dummies and excel in one on one situation. Modern football requires a generation of footballers with excellent technical skills, a good understanding of tactics and who are mentally well–prepared.Thisiswhatformsthe foundation of world cup success. Do youth training/coaching and competition program in South Africa prepare our children for these challenges at international level? This is a question that begs for some honest answers. The quality of a coach and the level of coaching determines the outcome. It is important that the content of coach education programs cover the requirements of modern football. It is not enough for coaches to have proper facilities, equipment and fi-

nancial support. Coaching skills and commitment to the work is even more important. I doubt if even the Safa President is aware of the number of qualified youth coaches in South Africa. The reality of the situation is that many young players are led by other children. It is common in South Africa to find an under–12 team being trained by a 14– year old boy. We are also possibly the only country where one can become a national coach at the age of 26. We are not going to achieve much with our illogical thinking. It is not correct to introduce age restriction in competitions like Castle Regional, “Vodacom” league and the National First division. These are promotional leagues, not developmentprogramsforPSLclubs.Smaller clubs also have ambitions to gain promotion to higher levels. South Africa

should do things correctly. We must stop confusing age group and amateur competitions. The individual quality of South African players needs to improve. If the level of individual flair is combined with good collective play, spectacular action results and outstanding goals are scored. This leads not only to positive results, but people are attracted to footballmatches. Individualqualityis aproductofqualitytrainingoveraperiod of time. Technical/ tactical work shouldreachmaturityaroundtheage of 16/17. Any attempts after this period will result in very small progress. All South African coaches, including junior coaches, are responsible for Bafana Bafana’s poor showing. I hear others talking nonsense saying GordonIgesundhasdonewell.Hehas also been coaching in this country for many years. Where are the players

that he has developed over the years? He is also as useless as all of us. Gordon’sfootballcoachinghistory showsthathehasalwaysreliedonthe senior citizens. South African football’s problems are structural. The solution lies in having proper football structures and getting knowledgeable and committed people. We need to move away from the politics of race. The day people start to respect knowledge and hard work over reputation and political affiliation, our country will start to prosper. KZN PSL team can avoid desperate times >> If they are willing to put in the work early on in the competition

S

OME KwaZulu-Natal teams campaigning in the elite league will need to step up their performance in order to be on the safe side at the end of the current season. Players of teams such as Maritzburg United, Lamontville Golden Arrows and AmaZulu must understand that they are the hope and pride of the province and whatever they do off and on the field, will affect the whole of KZN. The Team Of Choice started the last season like a house on fire, but the wheels came off in the final stages of their campaign. This made it clear that desperate times can be avoided early on. Unfortunately last weekend away, the Team Of Choice went down 2–0 to Kaizer Chiefs. However, it is not all lost. Iif head coach Ernst Middendorp cansortouthisballwatchingdefence, is able to keep the shape of the game in the middle of the park and use the chances created in front of the goalmouth, the local PMB outfit will easily go to the next level. Local soccer followers will also have to play their part by supporting the team during local games. It must also be remembered that Maritzburg United’s playing record is not yet badly dented and can improve. United opened their new campaign on 3 August with a 1–0 win against the rookies Polokwane City at home. Playing away to Free State Stars on 28 August, they lost 2–0. On 31 August, they played to a goaless draw against University of Pretoria at Harry Gwala Stadium.

So their record is not bad at all in front of the home crowds. Yesterday, United hosted Mpumalanga Black Aces at Harry Gwala Stadium. On Saturday the Team of Choice will be at Dobsonville Stadium to play against Moroka Swallows who recently lost to AmaZulu. Judging by the mistakes committed by the Birds’ defenders, United can come back with a win, provided that chances created are convereted. Middend orp agrees that there were some mistakes when defending and failing to score in front of the goalmouth cost them a game, adding that games are won by scoring goals and defending well. AmaZulu will be visited by SuperSportUnitedatMosesMabhidaStadium also on Saturday at 8.15pm while Golden Arrows will play the University of Pretoria at Tuks Stadium at 3pm. – Jerry Barnes.

manager Derek Blanckensee, last week. “One of the issues we deal with is neutrality, which basically rules out a home venue for both sides in the final.” The winner of the Platinum StarsBidvest Wits semifinal will be listed as the away team for the final. Pirates media manager Mickey Modisane, expressed his support for a decision taken by the league to name the venue ahead of time. “What I like about this decision is it eliminates all the bickering and unfairness,” he said Modisane adding that people used to ask why the venue was only selected at such short notice in the past. Pirates, meanwhile, faced the challenge of hosting a Soweto derby cup match against Chiefs at the 35 000capacity Orlando Stadium.
