BLACKOUT >> City mayor says many schools owe municipality money

UPON OUR INVESTIGATIONS, WE DISCOVERED THAT ONLY TWO SCHOOLS HAD A PROBLEM OUT OF A NUMBER OF SCHOOLS THAT HAD COMPLAINED. THERE ARE SO MANY PARAMETERS THAT CONTRIBUTE TO CORRUPTION

ITY mayor Chris Ndlela has issued a stern warning to schools with outstanding balancesonmunicipalservicestoeithermake arrangements to pay, or face the risk of having their services disconnected. These services include water, sewerage and refuse removals. Addressing teachers from Edendale circuit during World Teachers’ Day celebrations at the City Royal hotel last week, Ndlela said: “While we acknowledge the good efforts of ensuring teaching and learning despite unconducive work environments, we have a challenge of schools who are owing so much for municipal services. “Schools have budgets known as “Norms and Standards” allocated for such services, but some do not pay. Some schools complained that they were overcharged for water services meanwhile there were faulty meters. “Upon our investigations, we discovered that only two schools had a problem out of a number of schools that had complained. There are so many parameters that contribute to corruption. “Everyone must comply with the law, and if they do not pay, we will disconnect services”. A teacher by training himself, Ndlela further said

that the municipality has introduced an indigent policy for those who cannot afford paying for its services, such as pensioners and child-headed households. Ndlelasaidwhileteachersaredoingasterling job, there is still much to be done towards improving the matric pass rate. Municipal spokesperson Brian Zuma said: “The municipality has an obligation to collect revenue for the services it provides. All recipients of such services, including schools, hospitalsandgovernmentdepartmentshavetopayfor their provision. “Some institutions and departments have come forward to make arrangements to pay. Those who have not, are running a risk of having their services discontinued”. Asked about the number of schools and money owed, he just said the mayor’s comment must be seen in the broader context.

ESIDENTS of Swapo near Copesville have resorted to stealing electricity in broad daylight from electric metre boxes in the Copesville area. A Copesville resident who spoke to Echo but did not want to be identified, said that electricity thieves are now digging trenches to connect their electricity. “Previously they would steal electricity at night, but now they do it even during the day. They come with pick axes to dig their trenches so that they would illegally connect it to electricity boxes. “In the past it was better becausethereweremunicipalguardsinthearea, and now that we are guarded by a private company, it’s easier for these electricity thieves to do as they please. “This also poses danger to ourchildren, whoweoftenfindplayingaround these trenches”, she said. Areas that are mainly affected are Carnelian Drive and Amethyst Corner. The residents further said that despite reporting the matter to the ward councillor several times, nothing has been done. The is not the first time that Copesville residents have raised concerns aboutillegalelectricityconnectionsaslastyear residents were complaining about the street lamps that were not working due to electricity theft. Attempts to get comment from any of the

people accused of this practice drew a blank. Msunduzi municipality spokesperson Brian Zuma said. “Stealing of electricity is illegal and there are no circumstances that justify it. Worse still, these illegal connections pose a serious danger to the people. “Many people have died by being electrocuted by wires and cables that are illegally connected. On a monthly basis, we remove tons of wires used to steal electricity, but people continue to steal. He said municipal council has agreed on an electrification project of informal settlements, adding that in due cause, commencement of it will be announced.

AM happy that in the new South Africa all religions are respected and they are accorded the same sort of status. But unfortunately for us, that also includes Satanism. Obviously, if I was a political leader of note I would have opposed any inclination to legitimise Satanism because I think it is destructive, counter-productive and against nation-building. If rational thinking is anything to go by, I see no practical value in drinking humanbloodandthepromotionof drug addiction, alcoholism, prostitution and all the anomies that go hand in hand with Satanism. But that’s not what I am talking about right now. Today I wish to saythatIfinditunfairandinconsequential that our children do not have religious studies as an essential part of the school curriculum.

It nevertheless pleases me to note that our children still pray to God before the classes start. It would not be very surprising if that would be stopped too because in a democratic South Africa the constitution protects and promotes all religions. But I hope the fact that the majority of people in this country are Christians will continue to protect its right to be a dominant way of life or thinking. What I am trying to say is that as far as I am concerned it is not logical that a religion that was used, albeit negatively, to bring modernity to the formerly colonised people should now be treated equal to others because, (I may be wrong), my common sense observation tells me it is not! I can’t say I enjoyed the way my teachers used to drum verses from the Christian Bible and expect us to remember and recite these by heart. That was quite torturous and a reason to hate the Bible. But I respect the fact that, in the olden days, haditnotbeenforChristianity, many people would not have

had a formal education or be able to read and write. I do associate Christianity with enlightenment, and it came with a higherleveloforganisationinsociety, even though I do not consider capitalism to be in line with Christian values like sharing. It does not impress me that in a capitalist setup we throw oranges away in the sea instead of distributing them amongst the poor just so that we can keep the prices stable as they areregulatedbythelawofdemand and supply. Price regulation or no price regulation, I personally do not have respect for dumping healthy food for fish in the water as they may not even eat the oranges, when there are so many poor mouths to feed. But that’s not what I am talking about though. What drives me to write today is the sheer concern that my daughter is not getting exposed to the Word of God in class. It does not impress me that the only time she encountered the Word of God outside of the formal church building was when she attended a church chil-

dren’s camp. I am grateful to those children’s camp Christian organizers because today my daughter can say a meaningful prayer and judging from what I have heard hersayinherownwordswhenshe praysathome,Iamconvincedthat she fully understands that God is our Heavenly Father who sees all of us – children and grown up people alike – as His own children or creatures. But I would have loved her to learn these things at school like we did. As I said earlier, maybe not in the same militaristic drill that we were subjected to as children, but do it nevertheless. Maybe bringing back religious studies as a compulsory subject at school could even help reduce incidents of demonic attacks that disturb learning if we go back to the good old practice of making children learn about God and recite the name of the Lord. I think this is good for them in preparation for adult life when they will recognise the glory of God as a creator, architect and timeless interpenetrating reality that binds all.

Teachers under the Edendale circuit last Thursday celebrated World Teachers' Day at the City Royal ho tel. The day which is celebrated throughout the world on 5 October was started in 1994, in a bid to ac knowledge the vital contribution that teachers make to education and development. Education district manager Jennifer Baiju said: "We want to recognise the vital role played by teachers in this district, with some of them managing dys functional schools".

ANC optimistic about Nkonyeni’s appointment NOKULUNGA NGOBESE

W

HILEtheANCisoptimistic about the announcementofthenewKZNEducation MEC Peggy Nkonyeni by new provincial premier Senzo Mchunu, her appointment has cast doubts among opposition parties. Opposition say they believe that she has to double her efforts in order to regain their confidence. Nkonyeni’s appointment on Monday follows the movement of Senzo Mchunu into Premiership. Prior to her position as provincial legislature speaker, Nkonyeni was the MEC for Health in the province. Speaking about her appointment, DA KZN spokesperson for Education, Tom Stokes said: “The appointment of Nkonyeni as KwaZulu-Natal’s next Education MEC is one driven by political imperatives rather than education imperatives.

“They have appointed an individual who mal-administered the province’s health portfolio during her tenure as MEC. She was also linked to the multi-million rand “Amigos” fraud and racketeering scandal”. IFP’s spokesperson for Education Mntomuhle Khawula said: “Nkonyeni comes with her baggage, as MEC for Health four years ago, she presided over a department that was fraught with corruption and poor management. “We hope that when she assumesoffice, shewillclosethebad chapter of poor management and start on new slate. We cannot prejudge her, but time will tell if she was the ideal choice for this very important portfolio”. Congratulating Nkonyeni, ANC provincial secretary, Sihle Zikalala said: “We welcomeherappointmentandwe have no doubts that she will perform her tasks conscientiously. We are confident that she will be able to carry on with the good work that the department has done”.

South African Democratic Teachers’ Union KZN secretary Mbuyiseni Mathonsi has welcomed Nkonyeni, but has said she came at a time when their patience as a union was running out. National Teachers’ Union deputy president Allen Thompson also has welcomed the appointmentandsaidhedidnotthinkthat there was a better candidate. Thompson said some of the challenges that Nkonyeni would face included the closing down of schools, non-payment of a rural allowance for teachers, and corruption in the school feeding system. “We’re supporting her, but if she wants to make things worse than they are now, we’re prepared to challenge her,” he added. Education HOD Dr Nkosinathi Sishi said that with the new appointment, they are confident that they are going to continue moving up in as far as Annual NationalAssesments(ANA)National Senior Certificates examinations (NSC) and other programmes of the department are concerned.

It’s never too late to study

>> Matrics – How to still do well if you deserve an A for procrastination

M

ANY thousands of matrics are starting to wake up to the realisa tion that trouble looms large on the horizon because they have not suffi ciently prepared for their final exams. But although the temptation might be to just throw in the towel, there is still hope for achieving results you can be proud of, an educational expert says. “Not everyone will approach their exam knowingthattheyhavedonealltheycould to prepare over the past 12 years, and this gives rise to tremendous anxiety,” says Dr Felicity Coughlan, Director of the Inde pendent Institute of Education. But by changing your mindset and taking five important steps, your marks could still qualifyyouforentryintoastimulatingfield and exciting career, she says. Students who have procrastinated until the bitter end (and many highly intelligent young people fall into this category) should immediately do the following (now, not tomorrow): 1)Breathe, accept your situation, and re solve to do all you can to rectify it As with many problems, the first step re quired for change is acknowledgment of the problem. “Be honest with yourself and

face the fact that you have not yet done enough to do as well as you would have liked. Then, resolve to throw all you have into making these last few weeks count. That means being ruthless about distrac tions, and studying like you have never studied before. It is only a few weeks from your life, but they are a few weeks that could make a world of difference to your future prospects.” 2)Assess the damage Look at all your subjects and at all the ma terials you need to study. Again, be ruth less.Makesurethatyouhavenotforgotten anything. Once you know what you have to work with and what you need to catch up on, move on to step 3 (and don’t feel overwhelmed). 3)Take time to draw up a study roster Forget “rest time”, party time and staying up to date with “important” TV shows, Candy Crush or your friends and frenemies’ facebook updates. All your time should nowbefocusedonyourfinalexam, andon ly your final exam. “There will be plenty of time to play once you’re done – and then you’ll deserve it,” says Coughlan. “Allow yourself to draw up a detailed study roster which includes time

optimise your learning. >>Visualise by using colour and mind maps and other strategies rather than just words, so that you can use more of your brain, and >>Explain by answering questions or tell ing friends or relatives about your work. It is not until you have tried to explain what you know that you can assess if you know enough to answer the ques tions. “It is possible that you have neglected your work to such a

for a second round of revision, if possible. But don’t spend all your time planning ei ther! It’s time to get to work.” 4) Now stick to it Once you’ve drawn up your study roster, youmayrealisethatthingsarenotasbleak as you imagined them to be, and that you still have adequate time left to study. But don’t be drawn into procrastination again, Coughlan warns. “Your roster is your lifeline now, and you should cling to it and make it work for you.” 5)For best results, study using the PROVE method >>Practise by writing past papers or ex ample questions rather than just reading >>Refresh by making sure you are eating, sleeping and exercising enough (but be ware of using these activities to procrasti nate!) >>Organiseyourself, yourtimeandyour work. Having a neat working envi ronment and a clear plan for what you need to do and study every day, as well as having the relevant ma terials sorted and on hand, willgoalongway to reduce anxiety and

degreethatyoucouldpotentiallynolonger qualify for studying in the field that you wanted,” says Coughlan. “However, every effort you make now will ensure your chances are improved, and that you could enter another field that could prove equally if not more satisfying, or that you could work your way back into your first choice of course by, for instance, first studying for a qualification that will give you entry into your field of dreams. “Ifyouputintheworknowyoumay very well find that you still have fantastic options available to you when your results arrive, and you’ll be in a position to make decisions about your future knowing that when it counted, you put in your verybesteffortanditpaid off. And even if it is too late to make your Plan A work immediately, you still have enough time to give Plan B your best shot.”– Supplied.

PSL coaches walkout still a mystery

Clinton Larsen has resigned from Blo emfontein Celtic following a string of poor results this season. FOTO: FILE

>> The question is whether they were pushed or not

I

S it that crazy time of South African soccer again or the recent coaching victims were pushed? The usual and the familiar merry-go-round of the coaches was witnessedagain this week in the PSL. The former Mphophomeni Secondary School teacher, exMaritzburg’s Moja United coach (Safa 2nd Division) and the Lamontville Golden Arrows, Brilliant Manqoba Mngqithi left Abafana Bes’thende in a huff after his team displayed a classy performance against Bidvest Wits when they won 3-2 last Friday night. Abafana Bes’thende came from behind twice to beat the Milpark-based outfit during the Telkom Knockout Cup. Then why jump ship so early in the season after such a brilliant performance? This is the thorny question that has been asked endlessly in the local football circles. Also on Sunday morning, Bloemfontein Celtic head coach and the Wentworth-born Clinton Larsen resigned from his three year position after the 4-0 drubbing by by Mamelodi Sundowns in the same competition. Mngqithi this week was only prepared to say: “I believe it was the right time to leave”. Mngqithi also refused to shed light on the allegations cur-

rentlydoingtheroundsthathe wasaskedbyclub’sboss,Mato Madlala to leave after a string of poor results. It is also believed in some quarters that Mngqithi was advised or pressurised to resign for insisting on fielding “unknown or up and coming players” over the experienced ones. Thewayhehasbeenquickly replaced by Mark Harrison from Chippa United has also raised eyebrows. It has been said the swiftness of the move suggests the Durban club had already had contingency plans before Mngqithi’s walkout. Celtic’smanagementclaim Larsen’s exit was unexpected

and caught them off-guard. “We were not expecting it at all. We honestly thought everything was rosy and smooth,” said Celtic’s CEO Khumbulani Khonco. Larsen’s assistant Boebie Solomons already has already taken over as a caretaker coach. Khonco shot down suggestions that there was tension between the former Santos mentor and Larsen. “Larsen has been with the club for three years and Solomons came in as his assistant a while ago and they always worked as brothers and good partners.”–Jerry Barnes.

Free computer centre for MHA tenants

NOKULUNGA NGOBESE ACACIA park tenants will now have free computer services after the Msunduzi Housing Association (MHA) officially opened their computer centre on Satur day. MHA media liaison officer Khosi Xaso said that the centre with 12 computers will be used by children for their homework and school projects, as well as adults. “We heard from tenants that after school, children were getting into mischief as they had nothing to do. We developed a vision for a PC centre, with the latest computers

which have high speed internet access. Adults will no longer have to go to town for their job applications, as such services are now within their reach”. She further said that they are also hoping to offer computer training courses to those tenants who need them. The long term goal is to extend the programme to other tenantsunderMHA. Speakingattheopen ing, ward committee member Zama Ngidi said: “We are excited, we are holding our breath, and hoping that soon we will have similarservicesopentotherestofthecom munity.

Councillor Adams’ legacy lives on

E

astwood hall will now be officially known as Wally Adams community hall. This decision was taken during the late former Ward 34 councillor Wally Adams lecture at the hall on Friday. It was after former Msunduzi Municipality’s Ward 32 councillor Francis Grantham suggested that Adams should be honoured for his outstanding and sterling work when he was still councillor. He praised the late ANC-elected councillor for fighting for unity, democracy and openness. “Wally was not just a pride of this neighbourhood or a resident, but he openly struggled for everybody and united different racial groups.” Delivering a key note address, theformerdeputymayorandthecoordinator of the newly launched ICW (Indians, Coloureds and Whites election campaign) under ANC,MervinDirkssaiditwasdisappointing that most coloured people were always claiming to be overlooked and kept at a distance when elections were nearby. Dirks said the issue of feeling marginalised after 20 years of de-

mocracy was just to unbelievable to be true. He pleaded with the audience to properly look at the statistics and do the research to see that coloured people were not left out of the ANC government at all levels. He urged Eastwood residents to learn from Adams’ life and keep his legacy proud and alive. Dirks said Adams was a hardest-working councillor ever produced by the local municipality. He said the late councillor was not interested in enriching himself but fought to improve a relationship between white officials and other race groups in the municipality. “He was able to bring us together when the atmosphere was tense in the municipality between the whites and non-whites. “Wally was never interested in tenders or making himself rich, but fought for the needs of everybody in his community, irrespective of colour, race or culture. He knew and made it clear that everybody was needed on board in order to make a successful and democratic community. “Adams knew that Coloureds

and Africans relied on each other to achieve unity and better life. Coloured people must never make a grave mistake by separating themselves from the majority race group. “The fact is so-called coloureds are not left out of the government. We should never exclude ourselves because we are all South Africans,” emphasised Dirks. Mayor Chris Ndlela said Eastwood residents said Adams was not only the hardest-working but also a disciplined and compliant care of the ANC. “Corruption, losing sight of the peopleyouareserving,ill-discipline and forgetting the interest of your community is like cancer in most of public servants.” The wife of Adams whose is Ward 34 committee chairperson, Ivy Terry-Adams, said she was humbled by the speakers and the hardworkdisplayedbyherlatehusband. She urged the other ‘comrades’ to learn from his work and keep Adams’ legacy “proud and alive”. –Jerry Barnes.

LAST week the Pietermaritzburg football community buried Nhlanhla “Bridge” Ngidi, the former Carlton Athletics F.C. left winger. He joins other departed footballers like Bayede Zulu, Bafana Mkhize, Steve Maseko, Skebhe Ngcobo and many other greats of yesteryear. Football played a very important role during the most difficult period in the history of this country. It united us and created a spirit of brotherhood among many of us. Lekgwathi has not seen any action for threematches, afterclaiminginhiscolumn in the Daily Sun that “sinister forces” were behind his omission from the squad for the MTN8 Final. The club captain was then absent from Pi rates’ CAF Champions League fixture against Esperance, although Roger de Sa insisted he left Lekgwathi out purely for footballing reasons. But according to our sources at Pirates, Le

kgwathi’s comments did not go down very well with club boss Irvin Khoza, and the veteran skipper was hauled before a club disciplinary committee. ‘Phinda Mzala’ has already sent a letter to the club apologising for his outburst. “Lekgwathi has sent an official apology to the club about his statements made in one of the daily newspapers. The club is yet to respond and lay charges against the cap tain,” says KickOff.com’s source in Park town. “He is not included in the squad to play

I am happy that guys like Shebeleza Makhaye continuetoplayaroleinthisbeautifulgame. It is a pity that we now only meet when one of us has departed. What has happened to the spirit of the 70s and 80s? I just cannot understand why we find it difficult to have reunions every year. Presently, some of the guys are experiencing various difficulties in life. We all have a responsibility to ensure that we care for our sick former teammates. It cannot be right that

some of us feel deserted by former friends. We use to be big rivals during matches. I have some fond memories of matches against United Tigers, Charlton Athletics and Swift Swallows. I remember some of the tackles involving the late Schizo “Bafo” Zuma andaguycalledMlazafromUnitedTigers. These were the two strong guys. We used to hear the sound of bones makingsomenoisewhentheytackled each other. I always laugh to myself when thinking about the day Nothi NgcoboofUnitedTigerssayinghewill kick Sipho Shozi. He had already gained some considerable weight at that time.

orn in Mafakatini 24 years ago, Philani Zulu who plays central midfielder for Maritzburg United, says that local coaches should also recruit in rural areas, as there is a lot of talent there. NOKULUNGA NGOBESE interviews him. HAVING been taught how to play soccer by his brother at the age of seven years, he has never looked back. Before joining the team last year, he played for FC Sporting, Mubs FC, MDFA Pirates and Rebel Spurs. Knownas‘Philz’among his team mates, Zulu dreams of playing for overseas soccer teams one day. Describing himself, he said: “I am a typical young boy who is quiet and down to earth, but very talkative once you get to know me”. Speaking about his experience at the team, he said: “Playing for Maritzburg United is more difficult than playing for some PSL teams that I have

played for. You have to apply yourself more and adapt fast in order to be able to implement what the coach has taught you. “It is not about passion, but about how you can help elevate the team to the next level. There is a big difference, technically, physically and mentally”. His daily routine includesgoingtogym, andon hisfreetimeherests.Hisall time favourite players are the legendary Shakes Kungwane and Roger Feutumba and he also looks up to Michael Ballack. Speaking about challengesinthefootballindustry, he said: “There must be more youth structures and more opportunities for underprivileged kids. In most cases, there is a lot of talent in rural areas that remains unrecognized because there is no exposure”. To city fans Zulu said: “Supporters must support us in numbers, and be behind us even when things are not going our way”. Other than playing soccer, he loves dances which he says helps him with flexibility

Aces and will not be until he faces the club DC.” Bucs administration manager Floyd Mbele insists he is not aware of any issues with regards to Lekgwathi as he was out of the office preparing visas for the team’s up coming trip to Tunisia.– Ernest Fakude

Everyone played football in those years. I was also happy to see Mahewu Mlaba of Siyamu United Brothers. He was one of the best left footed players of his generation. It was a pity that his younger brother, Roy did not live longer. He was also a very talented footballer. It is just a pity that Black people do not record their history. I hope that one day we take responsibility of recording history of football in Pietermaritzburg. Football was not only played in the Black areas but there were clubs and personalities in Indian and White areas. Who can forget the great Rama Moodley and Bigs Chetty. Unzima lo mthwalo!

OMORROW is a big day for Bafana Bafana debutantes who have been named by coach Gordon Igesund in his 23man squad to face Morocco. The two sides will lock horns in an international friendly away at the Agadir New Stadium in Agadir City in Morocco. Igesund must be commended for his wise vision of selecting a number of young or junior and inexperience players. According to Igesund if the country wants to develop players and build a strong foundation for positive results in future, it was high time to do to blend senior and and inexperienced players. “We always speak about developing and building for the future, I believe this how it’s done and now a chance to do it. “I respect Morocco but we also need to give our youngsters a chance and everybody to see what
