The tourism hub, a major development in the city that is nearing its completion.
OOD news await city residents with major developments in the pipeline. These major developments include upgrading the Liberty midlands mall Oribi airport. Speaking at a Msunduzi Municipality Exco meeting deputy municipal manager for Economic DevelopmentDrRayNgcobo,saidthatR500million has been set aside for the upgrade of the mall. “Legal challenges have been resolved and an agreement has been signed with the mall. Everything has been sorted with the investor”, he said. Meanwhile construction at the airport has already started, with office space and roofing almost complete. “An additional airlift capacity has been added with the SA Express airlink coming on board, which will allow direct flight from Pietermaritzburg to Johannesburg and also Cape Town. “However, with the growth in population, by 2025, the airport will need to be relocated”, he said. Other developments which are still under discussion include the acquisition of land from the Greater Edendale and Vulindlela Development Initiative. The municipality has identified five priority housing areas and is in the process of acquiring that land. Amendedlayoutsandplansfromthedeveloper for the construction of Edenvision Private hospitalinArchieGumederoad,arealsoexpected.About R300 million is estimated to be used for this project.

ITH the construction of the Msunduzi Tourism hub nearing its completion, an amount of R2.4 million has been approved for the rehabilitation of the publicity house. Thepublicityhousewhichnowhousesoffices of the Pietermaritzburg Tourism was established in 1884, to cater for city police and fire departments. Speaking at an Exco meeting, deputy municipalmanagerforEconomicDevelopmentDr Ray Ngcobo said they got funding from the Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs

SPEAKING to Echo, Mthembu who is popular for his poem titled ‘Kuze kube phakade’ said: “In school I was very good in writing essays, then one day there was a vision to write something down. “I recited my poem in front of my class, and everyone loved it. From there onwards, I was invited to perform in funerals, community events and family functions”. He has performed alongside the likes ofMxolisiMtshali,SbodaPoet,MasojaMsizi and Syabonga Mpungose. “My poems are about God and love. God is love and there is nothing that one can do without getting strength from him. On the other side love is such a beautiful thing, but people tend to abuse it. Through my poems, I want to encourage people to love one another, nurture it and above all love God”, he said. Mthembu said that the current problems facing young poets is exploitation. “People take us for granted, they hire us for big events and pay us peanuts because they
think they are doing us a favour by exposing us to the world,” he said. Advising other aspiring poets, Mthembu said: “Be patient and do not enter into the field because you want stardom. Believe in yourself. Find yourself a mentor but do not put your hopes on others, as you have the power to do it on your own”.

Fouche notes that women are more likely than men to develop the allergy, because they were possibly sensitised earlier in life when they had their ears pierced, which can introduce nickel into the bloodstream. “When the ear is pierced, an earring stud is left in the ear to keep the hole open until the skin around it heals. Since the piercing is an open wound, the nickel salts are able to enter the bloodstream and break down the body’s natural resistance. “The reason why so many people are susceptible to nickel allergies is

Even though there aren’t any statistics available for South Africa, experts suggest that figures are comparable with that of the UK, where 1 in 10 people suffer from a nickel allergy. Salute for a gentle giant
IT’S one of the most unfortunate things that many of us never get to returntoourschools,especiallythosein the townships, to thank those teachers who helped shape our thinking and decisions. I am reminded of this as I think of the two years (1979-1980) I spent at Qoqisizwe High School where I did Form 1V and Form V under our distinguished and dignified principal Mr. Cecil Mkhize. Mkhize recently passed away. Working under him were equally illustrious teachers such as Mr. Wela, Mrs Molefe, Mr. Sandile Ndlovu and
us in his usual calm way, occasionally looking at us but mostly looking down,explainingthatwewerewrong to skip class but that we have made the whole thing worse by lying about it. Students do have this tendency to tell lies and half truths but Mr. Mkhize had this inexplicable quality and aura about him that made you feel ashamed if you told him lies. There and then I wished the earth would open up and swallow me. After hefinishedhesaidwecouldgoandwe sheepishly shuffled to the class. Another incident that many former Qoqi guys would remember, involved a fellow student who claimed that he had been disciplined unjustly by a teacher after accusing him of not wearing a full school uniform. The said teacher said the pants the student was wearing was not grey but green, which the student furiously refuted. So, led by the likes of Bhunu Hlengwa (the late soccer player of AmaZulu FC) and others, we assembled in front of the school and de-

manded that the teacher apologise. (See what the winds of 1976 Soweto uprising did?) Mr. Mkhize did not seem ruffled when he came to address us. With everyone there at assembly, he asked the aggrieved student (let’s call him Naughty) to come forward and stand in front so everyone can see what he was wearing. He then asked a second student to stand next to Naughty, so that we can compare. Clearly, everyone could see that Naughty was wearing a pair of green trousers, something which humbled him and us. But what we appreciated is that Mr. Mkhize, after making us blushso,healsoindicatedthathewas not happy with the manner the teacher had handled this matter and said he was going to have a talk with him too in private. Indeed many of my former classmates are educators as we speak. When I think of Qoqi (short for Qoqisizwe) and the time we spent there, a few stories come to mind. One day my friend Vusi Mkhize (who, incidentally, is now a teacher at Mpande - now a high school) and I were absent at school, (we will not divulge here the reason why since his learners might get ideas and give him a tough time) the principal called us. Mr Mkhize listened to us with his headslightlyturned,ononesidewithout interruption. Even as we told our tale,itjustsoundedsolameeventous. The whole thing was so embarrassing, more so because he did not shout or cane us, whom I thought at the time, he should have. After listening to us, he talked to

DIABETES occurs when the level of glucose (sugar) in your blood is too high – either because your body doesn’t produce enoughinsulinoryourbodydoesnoteffectivelyusetheinsulin that it does produce. Your body needs insulin to carry sugar from your bloodstream into your body cells where it is used for energy. If thereistoolittleinsulin,yourbloodsugarlevelswillcontinue to rise, as glucose is not removed from your bloodstream. A screening (finger prick) blood test can be done at our hospitalstogiveyouasnapshotofhowhighyourbloodsugar level is. A normal fasting blood glucose level is between 4-6 mmol/l, while for non-fasting 4-10 mmol/l is acceptable. Levels above these limits will require additional fasting blood glucose testing at your doctor, where levels greater than 7 mmol/l would be used as a diagnosis for diabetes. There are 2 main types of diabetes – Type 1 (insulin dependent) and Type 2 (also known as maturity onset or noninsulin dependent diabetes). Type 1 usually affects younger people while Type 2 tends to develop gradually in adults and ismuchmorecommon.Youaremorelikelytodevelopdiabetes if you have one or more of the following risk factors: •being overweight or obese •physical inactivity •family history of diabetes •previous diabetes in pregnancy (gestational diabetes). It has been estimated that there are about 1.5 million SouthAfricanswithdiabetes,buttherearemanyadultswho have diabetes and don’t know it, because it has not been diagnosed! What are the symptoms and complications of diabetes? Some of the symptoms include: constant thirst, passing more urine than normal, tiredness, unexplained weight loss, blurred vision or regular episodes of thrush. These symptoms are a result of having too much glucose in the blood and not enough in the cells. In uncontrolled diabetes, high levels of glucose over many years can damage many different parts of the body: •in the heart and blood vessels it aggravates atherosclerosis (hardening and narrowing of blood vessels by fatty deposits) - causing coronary artery disease, stroke and blood
circulation problems in the eyes, causing reduced vision which may lead to blindness •kidney disease and kidney failure •ulcers, infections, gangrene, etc in the feet •in the nerves, causing loss of sensation (especially in the feet and legs), pins and needles, and impotence How does diabetes affect your heart? High glucose levels in the blood affect the walls of the arteries, making them more likely to develop atherosclerosis. Diabetes also increases the damage done by smoking, high blood pressure and high cholesterol. Type 2 diabetics often have higher triglycerides (a type of fat) and lower levels of HDL (“good”) cholesterol. People with diabetes are more likely to have high blood pressure. Diabetes can even affect the heart muscle itself, making it a less efficient pump. As diabetes can affect the nerves to the heart, symptoms of angina may not be felt in the usual way and may be passed off as indigestion or a stomach upset. This leads to delays and difficulties in diagnosing angina and heart attacks. As you can see, diabetes increases the risk of stroke and heart disease, especially if other risk factors are already present. The risks multiply! The good news is that there are things that you can do to control your diabetes, reduce your risks and stay healthy.
If you are a diabetic, what can you do to reduce your risk of heart disease or stroke •A healthy diet and medication (if necessary) is essential for control of blood sugar. •Monitor and check your blood glucose levels regularly. Blood glucose levels should be between 4-6mmol/l before meals and less than 10mmol/l two hours after meals. •Give up smoking. •Check your blood pressure regularly and keep it below 130/80mmHg. •Check and manage your cholesterol levels. Your goal should be to have: a total cholesterol under 5mmol/l, an LDL cholesterol of less than 3mmol/l, an HDL cholesterol of over 1.2mmol/l and a triglyceride level of less than 1.5 mmol/l. •Aim for a healthy weight with a BMI of less than 25, a waist measurement of less than 80cm for women and under 94cm for men. •Eat a healthy varied diet with small, regular meals including fibre-rich starches, beans, pulses and 5 portions of fruit and vegetables a day. Samas’ entries for next year officially open

NE of the biggest events on the South African calendar and certainly the premier event on the entertainment scene, the South African Music Awards (Samas) is taking entries for the milestone 20th edition in 2014. According to the organisers in a press release, the Samas will take place at the mecca of entertainment, Sun City, on 27 to 28 April 2014. The awards ceremonies celebrate excellence in the South African music industry and are the culmination of months of hard work for the artists involved. They said 2013 witnessed a new breed of musical superstars dominate the Samass; and 2014 is expected to be a watershed year for the awards as they celebrate their 20th anniversary. “Following a highly successful event this year, we have kept the format and the categories for the iconic 20th edition of the Annual Samas largely the same. “Winning a Sama is still the highest accolade a musician or producer can win in South African music. We look forward to receiving top quality entries for next year’s milestone ceremony, ” says Sama spokesperson David du Plessis. The entries close at

new community theatre groups around the province.” The agreement with the NLDTF means that Twist has been able to recruit four groups for its new programme cycle, which will span two years. The groups were selected after a month of meetings with different theatre groups around the province. Theatre actor, Bhekani Shabalala, who was on the provincial tour said: “You can see that some of these groupshavespentlittletimewithpeople who have knowledge of the theatre scene, but they are still able to present brilliant, powerful pieces. “The groups who go to the local community theatre festivals share ideas, see where other groups are at, and raise the bar for their next performances.Itissoimportantthatthey get continued exposure to others so that they can continue to grow.”
The Twist programme brings the community groups together in ten projects each year. Members are exposed to a range of community festivals, professional festivals and skillsbuilding workshops that focus on both artistic and administrative skills. “Without administrative and management skills, even the most outstanding performers and performances will struggle to survive,” says Durden. “Most of the eight groups that we have worked with in the past have grown to be able to carve a place for themselves on the local theatre landscape, and we are so pleased that we can offer this opportunity to four new groups.” The groups included in the 2013/2014 Twist programme are Afri Bulletin Arts Organisa-
tion from Hlabisa, Lashona Ilanga Youth Arts Creation from Marianhill, SiyathuthukaTheatreCompanyfrom Lindelani north of Durban, and Izwi Youth Movement based at Mpophomeni near Howick. The first part of the new Twist cycle starts at the end of October, where the groups will come together in Durban for an induction workshop, and a session on workshopping new plays, led by the award-winning theatre-maker, Neil Coppen(AbnormalLoads,TinBucket Drum, Tree Boy). The groups will then participate in a skills exchange and sharing programme with the Stut Community Theatre group from the Netherlands, who will be performing in Durban courtesy of funding from the Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands. — Arts Editor

ANK McGregor and Jasper Mocké powered to an impressive victory in South Africa’s premier one-day canoeing race, the Ozzie Gladwin, presented by Parklane Superspar, on Sunday. In the women’s race, Abby Adie and Anna Adamová dominated to finish a strong 21st overall. “We didn’t know what to expect. We’re up against pure Dusi crews here and I said to Jasper just before thestartwehavetotryandstayincontention and hopefully catch up on the water, but we seemed to dominate the portage and we got out first and put infirst,sothat’sabigconfidenceboost for the two of us so early in the season,” said McGregor after clinching victory. “It was fun. We had enough of a buffer and we didn’t leave anything to chance.” The pair’s victory comes on the heels of their win in the Vaal Canoe
Marathon last weekend, which also served as SA K2 River Marathon Championships. “We got into the boat for the first time just over a week ago, just before the Vaal, and straight away felt nice and comfortable,” said Mocké. Conditions were cool and windless and the Albert Falls Dam flat, making for a very fast start to the event over the 4km lap that led to the 1km run around the dam wall. At the takeout, McGregor and Mocke led into the portage, with Andy BirkettandSboneloZondijustbehind them in second, Cam Schoeman and Jakub Adam in third, followed by Len Jenkins and Matt Bouman in fourth, and reigning Dusi K1 champion Lance Kime and Thulani Mbanjwa in fifth. McGregor and Mocké underlined theirfineformandfitnessbyreaching the water first after the portage, with Birkett and Zondi holding onto second and Kime and Mbanjwa moving up to third. The two leading boats then managed to open a gap on the other chasers until, at The Cascades rapids, McGregor and Mocké put the hammer
down and pulled clear to win by 49 seconds over Birkett and Zondi. Cam Schoeman and Jakub Adam were in position to capture third, but they suffered a bent rudder about a kilometre-and-a-half from the finish and were passed firstly by Kime and Mbanjwa and then by Jenkins and Bouman. “The race was very tough,” Zondi said after finishing. “There were a lot of good combinations, especially on the dam where six boats jumped to the front together.” While he admitted to not being fully satisfied with their performance on the day, three-time Dusi champ Andy Birkett said he was satisfied with the rapid improvements the pair was making every time they paddle together. “It was a tough race today,” said third place finisher Michael Mbanjwa. “I think we did alright. The field was very strong and Hank and Jasper are flying! Sbonelo and Andy are also very strong and managed to keepwithupwiththem,where we couldn’t. But I think we’re getting better every day.” “We’retryingtonotread too much into results as this early stage, but we did notice that Hank and Jasper were very, very strong,” said Lance Kime. “We know their paddling will always be phenomenal and they also ran very well today. Andy and Sbonelo are also great all-rounders and they are both going to be very difficult
to beat in the Dusi.” Women’s winners Adie and Adamová bent their rudder at the Cascades Rapid, but not even the loss of one or two minutes put them under pressure. “We’ve had a good day,” said Adie. “It was quite relaxed, especially on the dam. We just hung with the other girls and then just before the portage weputinanintervalandbrokeahead. From the portage there was no looking back and we pulled away.” “It was so hard,” Adamová laughed as she described the portage. The Czech star recently finished second in the K1 division and third in the K2s at the Marathon World Championships and based upon the pair’s early season form, they are going to verytoughtobeatinthe2014DusiCanoe Marathon.

Presently, unemployment figures are too high. This has an effect on the socioeconomic status of many of South Africans. We cannot talk of junior leagues if there are no football clubs within communities. The majority of people are battling for basic things like food, medical care, accommodation etc. It is scan dalous therefore to spend fortunes on parties or events under such conditions of poverty. A lot of mon ey is spent on lunches for officials while there are no facilities and equipment for sports. It is unfortunate thatwetendtosupplythosethatarealreadyfatwhile potential stars are starving. Itisachallengetogetthebestoutofstarvingchildren. One needs energy to train and compete effectively. Football challenges therefore should be addressed
with problems of food production, skills develop ment, service delivery, and drug and alcohol abuse. Development of top footballers is not just training in the fields. It involves everyone including parents, councillors, churches and schools. We have said this before that though leadership is important, individu als cannot be expected to perform miracles. Locally, how do we ensure that young people take their places among the elite footballers in this coun try? It will involve cooperation instead of petty jeal ousies. Acquiring knowledge and its application, hard work and desire to make a difference in the lives of the young. Empowerment of the young is not just about money. Wecanalsosupportpeoplethroughusingourtalents, time and love. PietermaritzburghasgivenSouthAfricatopfootball ers in the past. The present generation of young peo ple have our genes. They will not succeed or work to their full potential unless we as leaders and adults play our role. We need to move away from the mentality that money can do everything. PMB golfer bring home the global trophy DREAMS of competing like a ‘pro’ golfer and raising the winning trophy in the 19th Amateur World Golfers Championship came true for local golfer, Ajith Ghareeb. In a press release World Golfers Championship said, Team SA2 finished in a proud 3rd place out of 26 competing countries at the world final. Ajith also finished 10th in his individual 21 to 25 flighting division. “Founded by the late sporting icon, Sven Tumba and supported by the patronage of world-class golfers, Arnold Palmer, the late Severiano Ballesteros and Annika Sorenstam, World Golfers Championship is the world’s largest amateur golf tournament that gives amateurs the unique opportunity of experiencing the thrill of competing as a professional against competitors from all over the world,” said the press release. them. Last Thursday people from various sections of Howick such as Mpophomeni, Cedara, Howick West, Hhaza, Shiyabazali and others gathered at uMngeni sports complex to attend the official opening of the unusual outdoor yet world class gym. The function attracted a lot of municipality councillors and government officials from the KwaZulu-Natal Department of Sports and Recreation, led MEC Ntombikayise SibhidlaSaphetha. Sibhida-Saphetha said the new outdoor gym was one of the governments ongoing projects to encourage people to live healthy lifesyles by training their bodies. She challenged the members of the public tomakesuretheirbodieswerelookingniceand trimmed when she comes back in a few weeks time for another project. “I am saying down with the big tummies, down! I am saying down with the shapeless bodies, down! When we come back for another project in the Shiyabazali area, I want to see good looking ladies with figured bodies. “To men, I want to see those broad straight shoulders. I wants to see six packs not big and round stomachs. The fact is if we train our bodies we will live long and stay healthy,” said SibhidlaSaphetha.
UMngeni mayor Mbali Myeni urged the community to use the facilities and look after it. “We are lucky, we won’t pay a cent to train our bodies. Let’s use these facilities wisely and make sure that we don’t vandalise them. We don’t want to see these facilities becoming white elephants,” she said. Sports and Recreation uMgungundlovu district manager Busi Nkomo says free outdoor gyms will be extended to other areas or wards around the district. “As the MEC pointed out, this is not the end of it.We are looking at other areas because the government’s aim is to build a healthy nation and force that mentality to live a heathly lifestyle within our communities,”said Nkomo.Jerry Barnes
