Madiba was a born leader >> Surprisingly, even the oppressors would seek advice from him while he was incarcerated NOKULUNGA NGOBESE AND NOMPEN DULO NGUBANE

T

HE passing of former president Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela has not only moved SouthAfrica, butthewholeworldaswell. Echo spoke to some local residents to hear their fondest memories of this global icon. Struggle icon and Msunduzi municipality ANC chief whip, Truman Magubane, who spent four years incarcerated with Nelson Mandela on Robben Island said that his death is a loss to the nation since he played a crucial role in fighting for peace and freedom in this country. “As old as he was, we would have loved to see him living for many more years, but he was oneoftheluckyonestohaveliveduptothisage. He is at peace now. We will forever be grateful to the generation of Nelson Mandela, Oliver Tambo, Anton Lembede, Walter Sisulu and Mangosuthu Buthelezi for laying the foundation for democracy,” said Magubane. Magubane said that although they were in separate prison cells, he and Madiba would see each other when they were sent out to play in the sports ground. “Fromtheveryfirstmomentwemet,Icould see that he was a born leader. I was intrigued by his charisma and listening skills. He was a good advisor as well, and surprisingly when things went bad, even the oppressors would seek advice from him,” he said. Magubane said that Mandela was a disciplined and avid sportsman which he believes is what helped to contribute to his long life. “Now that he is gone, we need to sit down and re–evaluate if we are still living according to his values and if not, question ourselves as to where we went wrong. The struggle is not over. We have attained political freedom, now we have to fight for economic emancipation”. Well–known Pietermaritzburg poet Botsot-

so Mahlaba, who has also composed a poem about the icon, said that he first performed in his presence in 1996 when he came to Qokololo stadium. “My fondest memory of him was when he came to Imbali to plead for reconciliation between fighting IFP and ANC members. When he had to deliver his speech at the Lay Ecumenical Centre, he could not contain himself and he cried Since then, a stone of peace was erected at Imbali’s Unit 2 area. My poem titled ‘Abathandi Boxolo’ is to honour his life and pay tribute to the great man”. CityartistJeffrey‘Friji’Xulu, whomade newsin2010afterdesigningafridgeforthe former president and presenting it as his birthdaygiftatMandela’sMvezohome, said that he is currently in studio recording an album to honour his hero. The album is titled ‘Sizomphakamisa uMandela’. “We have lost a great man, but at his age to live this far is a blessing. We should celebrate this blessing. He did not use weapons to fight, but instead brought his enemies closer. This is one lesson that I have adopted from him,” he said. Samuel Dlamini, who wrote a song titled ‘Madala madala’ for the group Kamina which was first aired a day before Mandela’s birthday this year, said that he wrote the song to pay tribute to the great man who has inspired him so much. “It is painful that he has left us, but the best way to remember him is to pick up from where he left. We have freedom because of him, and we have to continue with his legacy”. The statesman will be buried at Qunu in the Eastern Cape on Sunday following a memorial service which was attended by VIPs and dignitaries from all over the world at FNB stadium on Tuesday.

Phiyega to help fight crime in KwaZulu–Natal during the festive season ECHO REPORTER

>>news@myecho.co.za

N

ATIONAL police commissioner Riah Phiyega will help KwaZulu-Natal in a fight against crime during the feastive season, and intheleaduptothe 2014generalelections. Phiyega confirmed last Wednesday that she will be working with the province and provincial police commissioner Mmamonnye Ngobeni when she addressed the provincial cabinet at the premier’s office about crime prevention plans for the festive season and the up-coming general elections. In a press release, premier Senzo Mchunu promised to allocate more resources to assist the national police commissioner to ensure that the crime fighting measures are a success. “In order to make an impact, we will align our own provincial crime strategy to the national strategy. The provincial government wants to ensure that the people of KZN live in a free and democratic state where

there is no housebreaking, drug trafficking, stock theft, hijackings and no rape of women. We want the KZN province to be at the forefront of the fight against crime,” he said. In the statement, the premier called upon civil society to participate in this fight against crime. “The government will continue to allocate resources to support community crime prevention associations, street crime committees and neighbourhood watch groups in order to make it impossible for criminals to operate. Hotspot areas have been identified and police have been deployed accordingly to deal and prevent crime,” said Mchunu. With regards to violence during general elections, the security machinery has been strengthened to ensure that peace prevails and that any unruly elements found to be violating the rights of others face the full might of the law. “In addition, to support the work of the law enforcement agencies, we will be kick–starting multi–task committee negotiations involving leaders of political parties,” said Mchunu.

REVAMPED section of Chief Albert Luthuli (Commercial) road, running in front of the city hall, will be officially opened tomorrow. At a media briefing last Friday, Msunduzi Municipality Mayor Chris Ndlela confirmed thattherenewedstretchof roadwillbeopened by Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (Cogta) MEC Nomsa Dube–Ncube. Ndlela said that Dube–Ncube had agreed to officially open the road notlater than tomorrow. Motorists and city business people have expressed their unhappiness about the delays in the opening of the road. “Initially, this project was meant to have beencompletedbytheendofSeptember2013. Regrettably, this was delayed considerably due to a number of infrastructure challenges that we discovered underground. Most of these services did not even have drawings that councilcouldrefertointryingtorelocatethem. We understand that this exercise has left a number of business people with huge financial losses, butwealsohopethatyour businesses will double their income as a result of the revampthatthisareahasenjoyed,”saidthemayor. He said that as a municipality, they would like to thank the MEC for funding this urban renewal project. “We hope that all the stakeholders will bear with us as we roll out the Pietermaritzburg UrbanRenewalprogramthroughoutthecity.Any inconvenience suffered is deeply regretted but I am certain that it was worth the wait,” said Ndlela.

Representatives from the Southern African Music Rights Organisation, KZN Music House, Uhologo Productions and Bosimo Music Productions were also invited to help groom local artists. Umgungundlovu Arts and Culture Council chairperson Botsotso Mahlaba said that there are many challenges faced by city artists. “There are events in the city, but artists from other cities are invited to perform. When there are events, even if we cannot participate, we needtobeinformedascityartistssothatwecan support those who are performing. Many aspiring artists make the mistake of undermining their audience by arriving late at events. How does one expect to be taken seriously if he or she does not keep time?” said Mahlaba. The council is still to devise a strategy to help artists on their challenges.

The contestants who are entering the KZN pageant, from left to right are Qiniso Sithole, who won the Face of KZN of the male category on 30 November 2013, RynoHenrico Byl/Francois, Zama Maseme, Sthem biso Mdluli, supported by Pierre Buckley (Mr Gay SA finalist) and Thuli Mjwara – programme manager, Gay & Lesbian network.

T

HE Gay & Lesbian Network will be hosting the Pink Mynah festival fair and Mr & Ms KZN pageant this Saturday at the Royal Showgrounds. The fair and pageant will beprecededbyastreetparade which is to start at 10am at Freedom Square, and proceed down Chief Albert LuthuliStreettowardshall7at the Royal Showgrounds. The parade will start with a minute of silence in respect of Nelson Mandela and the singing of the national anthem. At the festival fair, there will be a line–up of entertainers including winners from the PMB Got Talent competition performing poetry, and dance, there will be Zulu dancers, a football exhibition, live singing from the iThembalethu performing arts, marimba band and music from DJ Le Soul and DJ

Sparks Bantwana and crew. The festival will end off with the inaugural Mr & Ms KZN pageant, a unique event as it will be open to all, regardless of sexual orientation and who identifies as a Mr or Ms. In previous years, the Network hosted gay pageants but has decided to move away from this and now everyone may enter. The pageant starts at 6pm at hall 7 at the Royal Showgrounds and tickets cost R60 per person. Gay & Lesbian network director Anthony Waldhausen said that this year’s festival is taking place when everyone is mourning the death of Nelson Mandela. “It has being difficult to organise the festival under these circumstances and we were contemplating postponing the festival, but decided to go ahead as a way of honouring Madiba,” he said.

He added that they thought it appropriate to continue the festival which aims to create awareness of freedom, democracy and human rights, which Madiba stood for. “We are celebrating the diversity of our nation but at the same time, we are highlighting the plight of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, intersex (LGBTI) people who continue to face adversity, discrimination and hate crimes, despite our Constitution which Madiba fought for. “We are saddened that in these times, LGBTI people are still persecuted and discriminated against and even criminalised in some countries. We also take this opportunity to wish Pierre Buckley, Mr PMB, who is a finalist of Mr Gay SA. All the best and bring the crown back to PMB. The Mr Gay SA finals take place on 13 December in Cape Town” he said. – Supplied

N just four years since she started gymnastics, Smero’s own gymnast Nomfundo Thusi has made great strides as she was recently crowned the gymnast of the year. The 12–year old, who is a pupil at Piet Retief, was announced as gymnast of the year at the Pietermaritzburg Gymnast Sports Academy two weeks ago. While this is a white dominated sport, she has hopes of making it big and hopes to pursue the sport even after completing matric. At her tender age, she has more than 10 medals under her belt. In 2010 she was crowned a national champion, and has represented the province in several competitions. Speaking to Echo, her father Sfiso Thusi said that his daughter had joined the sport by chance, as he had accompanied a colleague who was going to register his child for karate, and developed an interest. “We are very happy about her achievement, especially since she has broken the mold and excelled in a sport that is known to be for white people. This shows that you can achieve anything if you put your mind to it. Success requires commitment and hard work”. Expressing her excitement, Nomfundo said: “I am happy and very grateful to my coach who taught me new things. I love the hobby as it stimulates the mind and encourages fitness. I hope to make it big, as I wish to make a career out of it one day”.

VOX POP ON THE PASSING OF MADIBA NOMPENDULO NGUBANE

>>nompendulo.ngubane@myecho.co.za

L

AST Friday, 6 December 2013, the whole world woke up to the news that the first democratically elected black president, “Tata”NelsonRolihlahlaMandela, haddeparted at the age of 95 after a long battle with a lung infection. President Jacob Zuma had announced

Vincent

Madiba’s death at the Union Buildings in Pretoria the previous night, just before midnight. He said Tata Mandela died peacefully in the companyofhisfamilyon5Decemberatexactly 8.50 pm at his home in Gauteng in Vilakazi Street. Citizens of Pietermaritzburg shared their feelings about this international icon with NOMPENDULO NGUBANE

Malwane

Nana Ndlovu

“I guess each indi vidual has his or her own reaction to Mandela’s death. The news broke my heart because we lost somebody who fought for peace and we lost some body who created unity in South Afri ca. My father is from Mozambique and Graca (Mande la’s) wife is also from Mozambique. That relationship grew the love of the old man in my heart and that’s why I felt so much pain when I heard that he was gone”. “I feel that Mande la’s death has been exaggerated. Mandela doesn’t even know us and we are mourning for him. Who are we really mourning for? It’s true that he fought for us to be free, but his death has been exaggerated”.

“I also feel that his death has been exaggerated to the extreme for no reason. Mandela was not the only struggle icon who fought for South Africa to be a democratic country. We do have other people who were exiled. He is not the only one and people must not give all the praises to him as if he was the only one who fought for freedom.”

EASONED trumpeter and composer, Brian Thusi, will perform for the Rainbow Restaurants 32nd birthday on Sunday. Doors open at 1pm and the performance starts at 2 pm. Tickets cost R60 at the door. Rainbow founder Ben Pretorius will lead the tributes to Madiba through the course of the afternoon. Along with the late Baba Archie Gumede, Pretorius was, after all, integral to the staging of a concert on Sunday 12 June 1988, where a small enclave of protest, called the Rainbow Restaurant, hosted a Free Nelson Mandela’s 70th birthday celebration the day after the globally televised Hyde Park concert. Rainbow co-owner Neil Comfort has assured plenty of music from Thusi’s nine–piece big band on the day. “Themusicianswereoriginallyguaranteed a professional fee and thanks to the support of SAB and the Castle Milk Stout brand, a good percentageofthatisalreadycovered.Asthings stand, if we get an audience of around 200, the event will bring in a profit and so, in honour of Madiba, the Rainbow will donate whatever profit is made from door takings to our chosen charity, the Open Door Crisis Centre in Pinetown,” said Comfort. The following day, guitarist Mdu Mahlobo will take to the stage and belt out songs from his new album that he will be launching.

This happens at a time when there is an emergence of divisions among almost all political parties and trade unions. We should take this period not to mourn, but to celebrate the life of an icon who guaranteed in his selfless struggle that nothing turns the ANC into a rabble of black chauvinists or a clique of leftist demagogues. As the caucus of the African National Congress in KwaZulu-Natal, we send our deepest condolences to the family, friends and comrades of Tata Mandela. It is not always easy to accept death, butTatahasfinallyreachedhis Long Walk to Freedom. He stood firm in ensuring peace and led in the struggle to attain social cohesion. His hatred for racial discrimination and violence saw him call for reconciliation. HE saintly nature of Nelson Mande la’s life, contribution and recognition cannot be disputed. It is easier to re flectonthelifeofapersonwhenheisdead. And to know that Mandela lived from 1918 to 2013 is on its own unbelievable. Looking at his life as the magnificent story that it is, of course there are many points where he could have died, that is, before he went to prison, when he was in prison, and after he was released from prison. But it did not happen. He died peacefully in the company of loved ones at his Johannesburg home on the night of 5 December 2013 and the whole world paused and talked about him and him alone. I wonder how it feels like to be a saint that refused to be recognised as such. I mean, Madiba had all the qualities of a saint. Like the Lord Jesus Christ whose ministry lasted for a short period, yet his legacy, influence, impact and leadership is forever, Madiba only worked in public office for one term, yet he personifies the achievements of the 1994 political settlement and cordial race relations all over the world. The assumption is that God does not keep His special people whom He is using for a greater purpose for too long because they might be corrupted, tainted, diminished in stature or accumulate a worldly blemish that would undermine the long–term pur pose and meaning of their lives. A worldclass thinker, and simple leader, who recognised that if his people’s stom achsremainhungry, thelongwalktopoliti cal freedom would have been meaning less,Madibadwarfsusindividuallyandcol lectively with his practical wisdom and understanding of the realities and needs ofthemajority, andwecanonlytrytoemu late him. I wish I had had a chance to interview

Thank-you Madiba - an instrument of God rests in peace

MADIBA HAD ALL THE QUALITIES OF A SAINT. LIKE THE LORD JESUS CHRIST WHOSE MINISTRY LASTED FOR A SHORT PERIOD, YET HIS LEGACY, INFLUENCE, IMPACT AND LEADERSHIP IS FOREVER.

Madiba as a journalist. I would have asked him how it felt to walk into prison and stay for so long with your fellow comrades, and know deep down in your heart that the po litical discussions that were destined to make you the very first president of a dem ocratically elected government of a rich country should have happened right around the time you were locked up in jail. TheclosestIcouldgettoMadibawaswhen he visited the University of Natal as the po litical dialogue with the then apartheid government was in progress, and he came to our campus in the company of the likes of the legendary, the late, Chris Hani. At that time, my question to the ANC lead ership was around my main grave concern

about the socalled blackonblack vio lenceandhowtheANCwasmanagingthat in the light of counterrevolutionary activi ty that Africa was witnessing in Mozam bique, Namibia and Angola. And of course, he only recited my question, and my leader’s voice called my name: “Comrade Piwe has asked…”, but then, in his typical humility, he allowed his ANC comrades to answer other questions we had posed as students. But again I got very close to him when I had a privilege of organising a group of dis abled youngsters from a KZN school to sing, dance and recite poetry for him when he was president of the country. I had the honour of penning the poems.

OSMANS

After raising funds for the team to camp and rehearse in preparation for one of the mighty Madiba’s birthdays, I had the privi lege of watching him very closely sitting comfortably with the ANC’s then KZN leader Zweli Mkhize, watching the produc tion I had put together with the help of the wellknown KZN late performing arts coach, Lucky Mavundla, of the Winston Churchill Theatre. I know that it would have been harmless at that time to walk straight to him and greet him and shake his hand, but I re frained from doing it and was satisfied with watching him enjoying our show. Andofcourse,Ihavejoinedmillionsofpeo ple all over the world in dirtying my hands

each year when we remember the day this saint was born on July 18, and of course the practice has been getting more and more spiritual every year. With verve, many South Africans stand up and do something special on this auspicious day in July. Obviouslytherewassomethingofanartist about Madiba – the dress code (i.e. the Madiba shirts), the love for the arts and artists, and sports (he was a boxer him self), and children (hence the Mandela Children’s Foundation) – it was so clear to see.Letalonehisloveforwritinganddraw ing pictures. It is not surprising that he dies at a time when a new film about his life that has been made by a fellow South Afri can, Anand Singh, is enthralling the world. We have only just started to celebrate Madiba. We will celebrate him for a very long time to come. My most favourite mo ment of him was when Cuban leader, Fidel Castro, came to visit South Africa for the first time after Mandela’s release. And there was Madiba, trying to offer him a hand to shake. I just liked the way Castro pushed away Madiba’s hand and gave him a warm embrace instead. It was an embrace that said: “My darling brother and comrade in arms, we have come a long way – here we are today lead ing our people to freedom and selfrealisa tion.” God bless you, Madiba – you are an instrumentofGodandlikeJesusChrist, you will always be in our hearts. * Simphiwe Mkhize is a local poet, creative writer and journalist.
